Book Description
Andrea Fraser's work, writes Pierre Bourdieu in his foreword to Museum Highlights, is able to "trigger a social mechanism, a sort of machine infernale whose operation causes the hidden truth of social reality to reveal itself." It often does this by incorporating and inhabiting the social role it sets out to critique -- as in a performance piece in which she leads a tour as a museum docent and describes the men's room in the same elevated language that she uses to describe seventeenth-century Dutch paintings. Influenced by the interdisciplinarity of postmodernism, Fraser's interventionist art draws on four primary artistic and intellectual frameworks -- institutional critique, with its site-specific examination of cultural context; performance; feminism, with its investigation of identity formation; and Bourdieu's reflexive sociology. Fraser's writings form an integral part of her artistic practice, and this collection of texts written between 1985 and 2003 -- including the performance script for the docent's tour that gives the book its title -- both documents and represents her work.
The writings in Museum Highlights are arranged to reflect different aspects of Fraser's artistic practice. They include essays that trace the development of critical "artistic practice" as cultural resistance; performance scripts that explore art institutions and the public sphere; and texts that explore the ambivalent relationship of art to the economic and political interests of its time. The final piece, "Isn't This a Wonderful Place? (A Tour of a Tour of the Guggenheim Bilbao)," reflects on the role of museums in an era of globalization. Among the book's 30 illustrations are stills from performance pieces, some never before published.

Perfect for Animation Fanatics.......2006-09-19
This large format book gives an inside look into making storyboards, the heart of the animated "cartoon". It starts with a brief history going back to Windsor McKay and D.W. Griffith, but quickly gets down to business. Written by Hanna-Barbara artist and designer, Bob Singer, it gives valuable lessons about setting up scenes, camera moves, transitions, continuity, staging, composition, impact, emotion, vehicular motion, procedures, and "do's and don'ts". Illustrated with many examples. Plus a glossary of terms and a brief bibliography. Stop dreaming and start storyboarding today.

Book Description
This book includes many seminal articles by film scholars such as Christian Metz, Jean-Louis Baudry, Stephen Heath, Peter Wollen, Laura Mulvey, and Noel Burch. Also included are articles by the era's leading cultural thinkers: Roland Barthes, Julia Kristeva, and Jean-Francçois Lyotard, to name a few.
Philip Rosen has carefully organized these essays to open the reader to a number of central issues in film theory including the classical narrative text, oppositional and avant-garde cinema, subject positioning, the cinematic apparatus, and ideology. Rosen's introductions to each section explain the assumptions, ideas, and arguments important to the articles, and help place the essays in the context of the history of film theory, of narrative analysis, and of social and cultural theory.
Customer Reviews:
"the" film theory reader.......2005-09-24
I'm shocked to see that this excellent book has not be reviewed already! This is a collection of major contributions to the field of film theory. This may sound staid or passe, but it most certainly is not! Its merits are that it not only introduces the intellectual history of film theory (through the essays themselves, and through the editor's introductions to each major section, which lay out the intellectual terrain and major concepts dealt with in the essays), but it gathers a selection of essays, all of which are high-points in the field of "thinking about media". (The Mulvey, Baudry, Metz and Lyotard essays are some of my personal favorites.) For whatever reason, film theory from the 1960s to the 1980s was the major battleground for debates over the image - its power, technologies, spectators, ideologies. While the essays obviously focus on the cinematic image - and its attendant characteristics of sound and narrative - they offer inspiration and food-for-thought for thinking about the image technologies that are perhaps even more prevalent now than cinema: television and digital media. I guess what I'm trying to get at is that the essays here are not only interesting for understanding the way film theory developed, but also - and for me especially - for how exciting so many of these essays in this volume are on their own. They are excellent examples of how WELL (engagingly? intelligently? provocatively? politically?) a person can think about the moving image. Inspiring!
Note that while there are other collections of film theory, I would go with this one - both for the quality of the editor's introductions, and the SUPERB selection of texts.

Clear insight into different models of music therapy.......2001-05-01
This book is a treasure for people who want to know more about music therapy. It compares different models of music therapy always with the same categories, which makes it easy to find differences and similarities. It is not only refered to british music therapy but also to international music therapy (e.g. Orff-model). It actually describes different models of music therapy with the emphasize on improvisation. But don't be scared, it is quite a thick book. If you are interested in music therapy, it is worth it!

Customer Reviews:
Not too bad..........2006-09-09
Definately a different kind of D&D Avdenture.
Eberron is a breath of fresh air to the typical "Midevial Europe" D&D and give technology and such a twist.
The adventure here was really good, up until the last part, part 5 where the charecters seemed to get railroaded a bit.
But all-in-all a great adventure!
From a players point of view.......2005-12-17
If your new to Eberron as i was trust me theres no better way to meet this great new world than with this adventure!!!
Your supose to go from 1st to like 4th level but we got to 5th so the next carry on adventure might be a little bit easy for us but in saying that there was only 3-4 of us playing most of the time.
A few fights were probley a bit frigen harder than they have should have been but what do you exspect when you walk down the main road into a busted ass town thats the bad guys main base and start a fight!!!!!
3rd level and had a CR8! But over all i had a great time roleplaying in this world and am looking forward to next week when we start the next Adventure!!!!
Shadows of the last modual.......2004-11-17
While I have not yet run Shadows of the Last war with my PCs, I have looked over the adventure and found much of it to my likeing. The story line is continued relatively smoothly from the previous modual (Forgotten Forge), and a new group of foes for the adventurers are introduced, making for an exiting and well developed adventure. The adventure's primary merrit is, however, the sense of Eberon it imparts. With its technology like magics and cinamatic battle scenes, Shadows gives a DM wishing to learn a bit more about Eberon before writting his(or her) own adventures just the sort of model and set of possible adventure hooks one needs. In adition to this, I found the adventure easily modifiable, enabling me to edit out parts I did not particularly like and replace them with some of my own, with minimum difficulties. My one gripe concerning Shadows is the fact that the principle villians are not those implicated at the end of the Forgotten forge. While this is merely a matter of opinion, and I know that I said that the adition of the new enemies is an overal good touch, if I where a player, I would likely be somewhat dumfounded to discover that the oposition I faced in the last adventure is present only in the start of the modual (albeit in an exelently talored encounter). Over all, the Shadows is a great adventure for an Eberon campagn, and I recomend it to DMs in search of inspiration, bearing in mind that much of it may need to be tweeked in order to make it run best with your party.

Book Description
In the face of technological and ideological challenges European democracies have been experimenting with different regulatory regimes for audio-visual media. Rachael Craufurd Smith considers how courts of law came to be drawn into this regulatory debate and the extent to which they have employed fundamental rights to control political intervention. In the first part of her book she explores the reasons why the regulatory regime established for the printed press was initially thought inappropriate for radio and television and considers the continuing justification for state control of the audio-visual sector. She then examines the structural framework for judicial intervention in the legal systems of France, Italy and the United Kingdom, noting also the growing importance of European regulation. Finally, she charts how various constitutional and treaty provisions have been employed at the instance of commercial operators to challenge the dominance of state monopolies and asks whether judicial guarantees of freedom of speech and pluralism can continue to play a meaningful role in shaping the audio-visual world of the future.

David J. Pelzer's mother, Catherine Roerva, was, he writes in this ghastly, fascinating memoir, a devoted den mother to the Cub Scouts in her care, and somewhat nurturant to her children--but not to David, whom she referred to as "an It." This book is a brief, horrifying account of the bizarre tortures she inflicted on him, told from the point of view of the author as a young boy being starved, stabbed, smashed face-first into mirrors, forced to eat the contents of his sibling's diapers and a spoonful of ammonia, and burned over a gas stove by a maniacal, alcoholic mom. Sometimes she claimed he had violated some rule--no walking on the grass at school!--but mostly it was pure sadism. Inexplicably, his father didn't protect him; only an alert schoolteacher saved David. One wants to learn more about his ordeal and its aftermath, and now he's written a sequel, The Lost Boy, detailing his life in the foster-care system.
Though it's a grim story, A Child Called "It" is very much in the tradition of Chicken Soup for the Couple's Soul and the many books in that upbeat series, whose author Pelzer thanks for helping get his book going. It's all about weathering adversity to find love, and Pelzer is an expert witness.
Book Description
This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games--games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother's games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it." Dave's bed was an old army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and raunchy. When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat. The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare. He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive--dreams of someone taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son.
Customer Reviews:
David Peltzer a Hero.......2007-10-16
I have read this book and others by Dave Peltzer, he is one of my heroes because he came back from such incredible odds not only to survive, but to make a difference. I recommend reading this book and all the others he has written.
pap.......2007-10-15
I always assumed this title was an unremarkable addition to the intelligence-starved self-help/shock memoir genre that has plagued bookstore shelves for two decades now. When I began student teaching, though, I met one English teacher after another who used it in class. The story, they say, hooks teens and encourages them to ask questions about the society we live in. I am sorry to report that the English teachers are correct; boys in the eighth grade, at least, find the book almost irresistible.
This is most, most lamentable. Despite the recommendations of English teachers and the definitive evidence of student interest, I cannot advise anyone to read this egregious pile of tripe. Shame on Pelzer's editors, who should bury their heads deep in the sands of terminal humiliation. Shame on HCI for distributing this embarrassment to our language. Shame on English teachers for not seeking out stories that both interest young readers and support their acquisition of sophisticated writing skills.
I was wrong, though, to think that Pelzer's book is unremarkable: it is without doubt the worst piece of book-length writing I have ever read. I only finished the book out of morbid curiosity. Perhaps, I thought, the conclusion will reveal some unsought-for nugget of priceless wisdom. Or maybe a punchline? No such luck. My time has been wasted and, I fear, my cognitive faculties stunted by entering Pelzer's linguistically impoverished world.
Teachers and parents, help us work toward a better world by finding another book to put into young people's hands.
A Child Called "It" review.......2007-10-01
A Child Called "It" is an amazing book about the struggles of a young boy and his abusive mother. Though this book was disturbing and cruel, I thought it was very well written and the author had a great writting style. I thought some of the most disturbing parts were when David would be burned on the stove or locked in the bathroom for gas chamber sessions. I also hated that some of his greatest memories were at his favorite vacation spot and his mother ruined those for him. I think it is important that Dave let out his feelings and experiences in this book. I hope that he has found a way to move on with his life and not let the past ruin his present and future life.
Will make you cry, a must read.......2007-10-01
A Child Called it is and insperational true story about a young boy named David Pelzer being physically abused in his own home by his own Mother. The book shows how David made his way through life dealing with his horrific mother. He keeps his motivation through being drown, being burned, beat, forced to eat the contents out of a babies diaper, and countless other things while fighting for food in order to avoid starvation. He eats food out of trash cans, steals from students, and eats out of freezers in order to survive. This child's life was a living hell, but ahd the dedication to make his way through it with courage and bravery. This story is a must read that will bring you to tears and keep you motivated
I couldnt put the book down.......2007-09-27
I could not put this book down I read it in an hour and a half without stopping for anything. This story although so heart breaking needed to be told.. For the man who wrote this telling book 5 STARS and for the book aswell

A Child Called "It".......2007-04-23
A Child Called "It" is a true story about the horrible childhood Dave Pelzer had as a young boy. He lived in California, and he went through years of torturous games he had to play with his mentally sick and drunken mother, from the age of 4 to 12. These games sometimes almost left him dead, for example: one game was that if Dave did not finish his chores in time his mom told him that she would kill him, he did not finish in time and ended up getting stabbed in the stomach by his mother. My favorite part of the book was when Dave promises himself that he will survive, and says "In order to survive, I could never give in to her. That day I vowed to myself that I would never, ever again give that b**** the satisfaction of hearing me begging her to stop beating me". This is my favorite part because it is when Dave finally will have a goal besides getting to eat. Also, it is a huge turnaround for Dave so he is looking up. I would reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in autobiographys and the horrible act of child abuse. I do not recommend this book to anyone who has high sensitivity to this sort of stuff. I liked this book because it truly taught me how lucky I am to live in a family who has so much more love than Dave Pelzer's family.

Patrick J. Buchanan's contentious premise in The Death of the West is that the United States is no longer a healthy melting pot, but instead a confused, tottering "conglomeration of peoples with almost nothing in common." Relying on United Nations population statistics, and citing such diverse sources as Yogi Berra and Rhett Butler, Buchanan sees for America four "clear and present dangers": declining birth rates; uncontrolled immigration of peoples of "different colors, creed, and cultures"; a rise of "anti-Western" culture antithetical to established religious, cultural, and moral norms; and a "defection of ruling elites" to the idea of world government. His solutions include higher wages and tax breaks for parents than for singles, a dramatic rollback of immigration quotas, and a National History Bee. Buchanan's volatile, adamant book eschews any middle ground. Readers will either applaud his ideas or be repulsed by them. --H. O'Billovitch
Book Description
The West is dying. Collapsing birth rates in Europe and the U.S., coupled with third-world population explosions, are set to cause cataclysmic shifts in world power, as unchecked immigration swamps and polarizes every Western society and nation. The facts are clear: There are 30 million foreign-born people in the U. S. today, and there are more than nine million illegal immigrantsmore than the populations of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island combined Not a single European countrysave Moslem Albaniahas a birth rate that will enableit to survive in its present form through this century By 2050, only 10% of the worlds people will be of European descent America is losing the cultural war. Militant paganism is crowding out the old faiths. Separatism is triumphing over integration. The melting pot has become a salad bowl. And the impact upon American society, politics, and culture will be devastating.

The Death Of The West.......2007-08-24
This is an excellent, interesting, thought provoking book. I enjoyed it so much I have read it twice and have discussed the issues raised in the book with many people. I recommend it as essential reading for any westerner.
An important trend that is often ignored by the mainstream media.......2007-07-02
If birth rates are the best indication of a how much a people values itself, it's customs and it's traditions, then certainly Europeans and White Americans are in the pangs of self-loathing and self hatred. Nations and cultures usually die from internal causes and certainly the European way of life is rotten at the core. Europe and the American culture inherited from Europe is literally suicidal. Bucahanan does an outstanding job of laying out all of the grim statistics. The most important statistic is this: birth rates are exploding in the third world and developing nations while birth rates are exceedingly miniscule in the most developed nations of Europe, North america and Japan. What this means for the future no one can be certain but it is certainly an important phenomenon (maybe the most important trend in all of sociology) and one that for politically correct reasons does not receieve its due consideration in the mainstream media.
A curious read and ominous suggestion..........2007-05-17
"Death of the West" is a prophetic look at immigration and the state of our nation. One does not have to look very hard to see that this issue is of paramount importance in today's day and age. Buchannon sounds the horn, but will anyone listen to the discussion.
AWESOME read!.......2007-05-13
I never knew Patrick Buchanan was SO versed in history! A highly involved and educational read.
Didn't read it when it came out as I had the preconception that anything a staunch "conservative" would write would not be of interest. The reason? The label "conservative" has been hijacked and warped by the Neocons into a "mislabel".
Mr. Buchanan understands what a true "conservative" is and in my opinion is a true patriot.
Excellent read !!
Dear Mr Buchanan, you've missed something.......2006-11-30
Pat Buchanan's book has the following quote. It is from Katarina Runshe's book "Empty Hearts Empty Homes":
"Feminism is a Darwinian blind alley. In biological terms, there is nothing that identifies a maladaptive pattern so quickly as a below replacement level of reprocuction; an immediate consequence of feminism is what appears to be an irreversible decline in the birthrate. Nations pursue feminist policies at their peril."
Buchanan adds: "In short, the rise of feminism spells the death of the nation and the end of the West." And a little later, he says: "...the decisions women are making today will determine if Western nations will even be around in a century, and Western women are voting no."
Gloomy thoughts indeed.
But this view looks at society matrilineally: "Western Society" is being identified primarily with its women: we men are not even in the picture. Consequently, it fails to see the obvious. If feminist Western women want to "not-breed" themselves out of existence, then let them do so. We patriarchal males shall start looking for non-feminist--if necessary non-Western--women, who can be our life-companions, and the mothers of our children. There are plenty of them out there. We don't have to marry feminists.
In fact, a declining birth-rate poses a huge problem for feminism itself. If feminism is to survive for much further into the 21st century, then it needs to be passed on to the next generation, and the next generation after that. ie down the family line, from father to son, from mother to daughter to granddaughter. But is this likely to happen? According to a recent survey, 25% of young women aged 16 to 24 never want children. An italian feminist magazine found that 52% were of this opinion. Increasing numbers of women approach the end of the childbearing years, childless. Those who do have children, have them increasingly late. So the rate at which modern women reproduce themselves has slowed down considerably. One is tempted to say, that feminism cannot be passed on, because, increasingly, there is no next generation to whom to pass it.
Low birth rates do not affect all women equally. Women who identify strongly with a religious community of some sort--christian, hindu, moslem, jewish, or whatever--seem to have no trouble reproducing. The "Fatherhood and Family" ethos is still strong in those communities; hence, motherhood is valued too. And those women who are not especially religious, but who are not feminists either, also seem to do better than the national average of 1.66 children per woman. So that figure of 1.66 is only a national average. My hunch is that for feminists, the figure is lower than the national average--maybe 1.1 or 1.2 children per feminist woman. If that figure is correct, then it is pretty ominous for the future of feminism. It may be that feminism cannot be passed on to future generations, because, increasingly, there is no next generation to whom to pass it.
"Ah!" I hear you say, "What about those feminist who do have children?" Well, it is difficult to imagine feminism being passed down the male line---from father to son to grandson. Can't see it happening. So that only leaves the female line, matrilineally. Mother to daughter to granddaughter. But is even this much guaranteed? Daughters don't always follow their mothers. Imagine--just imagine--if a "Fatherhood and Family" type of culture were to become very popular in Western lands. What would happen then? My hunch is that many young women would abandon the feminism of their mothers, and embrace it. It will be observed, that in those communities where fatherhood is honored, there is no shortage of young women who hope one day to be mothers.
Unfortunately, the problem of declining birth-rates is usually approached from the point of view of women avoiding motherhood. Men are excluded from the picture; the result is a picture which is only half-complete, and so the solution is not found. Here are some examples:
Fifteen years or so ago, the declining birth-rate in Italy became too serious to ignore. Pope John Paul was moved to speak publicly about it. He urged women to "rediscover the joys of motherhood". A very noble sentim, ent. But he didn't mention fatherhood at all. Or if he did, the media failed to report it.
The birth-rate in Britain has dropped to a record low. In september 2004 government minister Patricia Hewitt spoke publicly about this problem. She urged women to halpsolve this problem by producing more babies. "It is your national duty", she aid, to embrace motherhood. And no, she didn't mention fatherhood either.
I remember listening to a BBC World Service program on this subject. A study had discovered that 25% of young women aged 16 to 24 had decided never to have children. And the young men? What was their attitude to fatherhood? We were not told. No-one thought to ask the question.
All too often, in Western countries, there is a huge blank space, where fatherhood should be honored. Or at least mentioned. Maybe that's the real underlying problem.
Pat Buchanan, unfortunately, in his otherwise excellent book, does not explore that aspect of things. Maybe in his next book?
