Now, this doll is so close to the orginal I smiled when I got her. I'm going to have to keep these put up and away from the grands, they are my paper dolls.

5 out of 5 stars Playtime with my grandaughter.......2001-05-16

I looked for Shirley Temple paperdolls in the store with no success. I was so excited to find the Boston Museum paper dolls. The paperdolls are just great. After watching Shirley Temple films with my grandaughter for years - we now can play together and act out different movies. It's so much fun to see her face light up when she plays with the paperdolls.

We love changing the dresses. This is such an inexpensive but "hours of fun" gift. I'm going to buy the other paper dolls that are for sale. Hope more will be made!!

      Book Description

Over the past two decades Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti have become one of the most recognizable and sought after names in international design. Rejecting functionalism and standardization in favor of a marriage of primitivism and elegance, their furniture, objects and interior designs are extravagant, theatrical, baroque, surreal. Their projects include the headquarters for Christian Lacroix, perfume containers for Nina Ricci, textiles for Bouchara, the famous Barbare chair, Montpelier's tramway, and Beverly Hill's La Maison du Cigar. One of their most outrageous pieces - The Extroverted Kitchen - a gigantic bean-shaped block with integrated oven and sink covered entirely in gold is part of the permanent collection of New York's Guggenheim Museum.

Produced with an extravagance worthy of its subject matter, this hardcover edition presents a breathtaking look at twenty years of groundbreaking design through dozens of full-page color illustrations.

I'm 27 years old. I can't quite remember the first time I read this book. It's a joyride from the first page to the last, as we live through Danny's adventures.

The Princess is a very spoiled brat and one night, she miss-behaves herself during a dinner party where one of the guests his the King of Cucumber Land. Her father decides to find her a tutor but he wasn't expecting Danny Doodle...

This book is a feast to the eyes. A hilarious and ageless story, well told and well drawned.
        A must.
        Five stars.

        Book Description

"This book is entirely unique, very well written, dramatic, and, at the same time, philosophical. It is likely to appeal to a very large audience, including anybody interested in the visual arts, in film, in theater, in philosophical problems of transformation, and in the unconscious generally."

—Melvin R. Lansky, M.D., UCLA Medical School and Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute

Wearing a mask—putting on another face—embodies a fundamental human fantasy of inhabiting other bodies and experiencing other lives. In this extensively illustrated book, Thomas Morawetz explores how the creation of transformational makeup for theatre, movies, and television fulfills this fantasy of self-transformation and satisfies the human desire to become "the other."

Morawetz begins by discussing the cultural role of fantasies of transformation and what these fantasies reveal about questions of personal identity. He next turns to professional makeup artists and describes their background, training, careers, and especially the techniques they use to create their art. Then, with numerous before-during-and-after photos of transformational makeups from popular and little-known shows and movies, ads, and artist's demos and portfolios, he reveals the art and imagination that go into six kinds of mask-making—representing demons, depicting aliens, inventing disguises, transforming actors into different (older, heavier, disfigured) versions of themselves, and creating historical or mythological characters.

In general, I like the more "philosophical" approach used by the author with this subject matter. However, I expected a more pragmatic "how to" kind of context to the material. I don't begrudge the aforementioned theoretical or "romantic" substance--but, I feel it's a bit erudite and a trifle cloying. Yes, those elements exist at some level for some practitioners of this craft--but, in the day-to-day context of professionals in this field, such matters are left to artistic "post-mortems" long after the project has been completed (and in the framework of an interview for an overzealous academician preparing a new source book). This is more fitting to a solely theoretical-approach college classroom teaching theatre appreciation rather than an applied, "hands-on" studio approach.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating look at appearance and identity.......2002-01-08

I'm a fan of several actors who have performed in prosthetics, and I was extremely excited to find this book. The psychology of physical transformation fascinates me.

The author intelligently explores the role of physical transformation in myths and fiction and how we as an audience and a society view transformation, willing and unwilling. He also shows the practical and psychological side of actually designing, applying, and wearing transformative makeup. He explores several different aspects of makeup artistry, and how each of these transformations affects the audience and the performer.

Some of the most interesting parts of the book for me was the exploration of willing versus unwilling transformation fantasies -- the horror of looking into the mirror one morning and seeing a giant cockroach, as opposed to the fantasy of shapeshifting at will, escaping consequences, seeing how people treat you when you're wearing another face.

He touches on this last part from the actor's perspective as well -- imagine the psychological effect of working with fellow actors and crew who never see your real face, who wouldn't recognise you if they saw you out of makeup. I've heard actors speak about this disconcerting feeling, and it's one of the most interesting aspects of prosthetic acting, in my opinion.

I was hoping for more exploration of the effect of prosthetics on the actor, and the craft of performing in prosthetics, rather than this book's true focus on the audience, and by extension, society. But the questions this book raised had me talking incessantly for a week, to anyone who would listen.

It costs more money than I'd usually feel good about spending, but in this case I think it's worth it.

          Book Description

Hector Berlioz's Les Grotesques de la musique is the only one of his books that has never been translated into English in its entirety. It is by far the funniest of all his works, and consists of a number of short anecdotes, witticisms, open letters, and comments on the absurdities of concert life. Alastair Bruce's fluid translation brings to life this important composer and bon vivant. He does a wonderful job of conveying all the puns, jokes, and invective of Berlioz's prose as well as the nuances of his stories. He even imitates a Tahitian accent in the translation, as Berlioz does in the original. The notes will give the reader insight into the innuendos and in-jokes that fill the pages. This translation will take its place among other translations of Berlioz's prose writings, bringing to the reader more lively examples of a still misunderstood composer caught up in the musical life of mid-nineteenth century Paris. With an introduction by Hugh Macdonald. Alastair Bruce is a London-based management consultant and former treasurer of the Berlioz Society. Hugh Macdonald is General Editor of New Berlioz Edition.

I have been keen on lateral puzzles for more decades than I care to admit to. This is a great sample of life situations where you need to twist your thinking a bit to arrive at the solution. It's no longer all about improbable circus acts and albatross pies!

I particularly liked The Shot That Saved. Speechless left me speechless. And I wonder how often The Plant is done??

5 out of 5 stars True to the man.......2007-09-29

Ten years ago I spent a summer volunteering for the National Park Service at Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, in Alaska. My remote rangers cabin was located at Twin Lakes. Being on the lower lake, I was about 9 miles from my nearest neighbor- Dick. We spoke daily on our walkie-talkies, checking in about the weather, any visitors, or interesting wildlife viewings. I trekked up his way several times over the summer, and enjoyed a few meals with him. I can't remember if it's in his book, but his favorite sandwich was the "Twin Lakes Special": sourdough flapjaks, raw onion, and honey; don't knock it 'til ya try it! Just like his book, he was a gracious, thoughtful man, a true naturalist. Also the most spry 82-year-old I think I'd ever seen! I was saddened to hear of his death several years ago, and was grateful the NPS kept his cabin as a historical site; it is a cozy place, dark inside, smelling faintly of woodsmoke and 1948 sourdough starter, with wonderful decorative touches throughout. Dick was truly a special person, and this book captures his voice, his no-nonsense manner of talking, as well as his appreciation of the beauty of the natural world, perfectly.

You cannot visit Alaska without reading this book FIRST! Just the photography alone will make you want to go. I dentify in many ways with Dick as I lived in a cabin in the White Mountains of NH for many years. He didn't intrude on nature...he simply lived in harmony with it. He appeals to all of your senses in his simple but beautifully written words, never mind the pictures. He is definitely portrayed as a "loner" but that is a good thing..for a loner has much higher self esteem and sense of character than those who can't survive in the world without people around them all the time. Dick is a true steward of the land because of his deep, abiding love and connection for this piece of God's Creation. His beautifully chronicled life in Alaska will remind you of Robert Frost's words.."We love the things we love for what they are." Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Just as Good the Second Time.......2007-09-12

I was telling my husband about this book as I started reading it. He said, "Don't you remember, we read that many years ago when Alaska Magazine published it"? I knew that Babe, the pilot, seemed familiar. It didn't matter. I was happy to read it a second time which is unusual for me. Oh, how I would have loved to have been able to do what Mr. Proenneke did and to live where he lived. There is nothing dull about this book and I suspect the people who find it dull haven't any interest in living in the wilderness without Blackberries, i-pods, automobiles and restaurants.

Even though most of us who enjoyed the book probably don't begin to have the skills that Richard Proenneke had which made what he did possible (and a pilot friend who delivered for free) I think we all wish we could do what he did. I know I do. I didn't realize that a sequel exists. It costs big bucks, but if it's anything close to as interesting as this book, it's worth it. Maybe I'll find out if the Mission Girls ever showed-up.

5 out of 5 stars Homesteading in Alaska.......2007-08-16

The year was 1968. The setting, the Alaskan bush. The mission, to live simply, deliberately, and self-sufficiently off the land, free of the trappings of contemporary society. The protagonist, clearly not what you might expect given the era. He was not some young, free spirited hippie, luddite, or draft dodger. Rather, he was a skilled hard working machinist/woodsman, who at age 51 decided to permanently leave the rat race behind.

Why this man, Dick Prenacke, suddenly left behind his conventional existence to live in a remote and unforgiving section of Alaska is never fully explored in the book. While snippets do reveal his distain for modernity, it never fully embellishes on what ultimately drove the author to do what few would ever conceive of doing. Perhaps Dick realized that at 51, the physical and physiological fortitude required to make such a transition would soon be out of his reach. More likely however, he foresaw the end of an era. No more than a few years after his departure into the wild, Alaska would enact laws prohibiting trappers and homesteaders from freely trudging off into the woods to live the quintessential "Alaskan experience." Soon Alaska would become like the rest of the lower 48, where people like Dick would be considered trespassers and evicted from any land that they did not rightfully own. Fortunately for the author, the laws were grand fathered in.

While the book is essentially a personal account of Alaskan homesteading, the author episodically weaves social commentary into his writings. He laments a society that is wasteful and superficial. The hunters that come into his Alaska, products of such a society, leave garbage and animal meat behind, unaware that the author cleans up after as well as makes use of their squander.

The author also reveals his anxiety for a society that is increasingly consumed by materialism. He feels that man is entrapped by things that he doesn't need and he seeks to avoid the superfluous at all costs. To the outsider, surviving in the wilds of Alaska would seem to require an extravagant amount of equipment and gear. One can only imagine the bill the average suburbanite would amass at the local REI in preparation for such an endeavor. Yet the author demonstrates just how little is required to not only to survive but also to prosper in such an inhospitable region.

The book closes with some thoughts on technology, and the rapidity of change that comes with it. The author's words are both haunting and prescient as he elaborates on his first year in Alaska and how his experience conflicts greatly with society at large.

As my summary states, this is an excellent quick reference guide to Japanese a/c of WWII. Written by one of the leading authorities on Japanese a/c, it contains all the basic information on almost all the a/c to see service with the Japanese military, and its "charm" is the information on how the allied intelligence services came up with the code words, such as "Zeke" and "Sally", for each aircraft. An indispensible companion to Francillon's "bible", with clear and interesting

For most Americans, writes veteran correspondent David Lamb, "Vietnam was a war, not a country"--even worse, it was sometimes merely "an adjective, usually with a negative connotation." The author was practically a cub reporter when he covered the war a generation ago; in Vietnam, Now, he returns to it, bringing with him a sharp analytic eye developed over the ensuing years. His key observations include the unexpected fact that "the Vietnamese liked Americans.... They had put the war behind them in a way that many Americans hadn't." This is not to say that things have gone swimmingly for the Vietnamese, especially in an economic sense: "Vietnam was like a racehorse whose jockey kept yanking on the reins rather than giving the animal its head to find full stride." And lingering still is the divide between North and South: "The officially articulated policy was always that all Vietnamese were equal; it's just that it didn't turn out that way. Ironically, the communist leadership [in Hanoi] found it easier to reach out to its former enemy in Washington than to its own brethren in the South." Vietnam, Now is an ideal book for anybody interested in Southeast Asia, perhaps especially veterans who wonder whatever happened to that place where they fought so hard for so long. --John Miller

                            Book Description

Now in paperback, the extraordinary portrait of post-war Vietnam told by a journalist who covered the war and returned thirty years later to cover the peace.

When he left war-ravaged Vietnam some thirty years ago, journalist David Lamb averred "I didn't care if I ever saw the wretched country again." But in 1997, he found himself living in Hanoi, in charge of the Los Angeles Times's first peacetime bureau and in the midst of a country on the move, as it progresses toward a free-market economy and divorces itself from the restrictive, isolationist policies established at the end of the war. This was a new country; in Vietnam, Now, David Lamb brings it--and us--forward from its dark, distant past.

From the myriad personalities entwined in the dark, distant history of the war to those focused toward the future, Lamb reveals a rich and culturally diverse people as they share their memories of the country's past, and their hopes for a peacetime future. A portrait of a beautiful country and a remarkable, determined people, Vietnam, Now is a personal journey that will change the way we think of Vietnam, and perhaps the war as well.

4 out of 5 stars An accurate portrayal of modern Vietnam........2005-03-03

I read this book as a primer before coming to Vietnam and I'm currently traveling through Vietnam in 2005 for three months. I find the book to be quite accurate. One reviewer made the following comment "If I didn't know better, I'd have thought Vietnam was heaven on earth after reading this book!" I think you'd find if you visited Vietnam as a tourist destination it is quite close to being paradise in many places. Contemporary Vietnam is a fabulous place to visit. The cities are modern and clean with beautiful old European style architecture, businesses appear to be flourishing more than neighboring Southeast Asian countries. Places like Dalat, Hoi An, Mui Ne, Hanoi rival the most beautiful tourist cities in The U.S. People are very friendly and are quite happy to have American visitors.I've personally never been treated badly for being an American while in Vietnam. I also agree with the authors statement that there appears to be few dissidents in Vietnam and most voice that they are quite proud of their country. Ho Chi Minh as well as the Vietcong are revered by most as a great Vietnamese patriots. Ask Americans if we should allow Pornography on Television or should abolish all traffic regulations and most would say no. In the same way we view these social restrictions as for the common good Vietnamese consider topics like censorship of the media as something that's done for the common good.

1 out of 5 stars Not Another pat on Hanoi's back from a guilty American!.......2004-09-08

If I am forced by my college professor to read another book by a journalist who went back and saw how great life is in Vietnam because America (and the South Vietnamese people) lost to Hanoi, I'm going to puke.

If you want read a book by a person who actually lived there for three years after the Communist took over, and doesn't replay every played out how great it was that North Vietnam was "united" with South Vietnam, then read Shadows and Wind.

If you want to get a real understanding of Vietnam and the Vietnamese people (this is a Vietnamese writing), then read The Bamboo Chest: An Adventure in Healing the Trauma of War. I think you'll find it very refreshing: unlike Mr. Graham who almost didn't survive the experience, I don't recall Mr. Lamb ever having spent eleven months in a Hanoi-run re-education camp to get the truth about Vietnam!

5 out of 5 stars A tad more "Then" than "Now".......2004-06-18

For anyone trying to ford the quagmire of myth and fact that surrounds the Vietnam conflict, this book is a necessary buoy. Mr. Lamb-whose current coverage of Vietnam for the Los Angeles Times is superb, though it is often soft-gives a voice and character to post-1975 Vietnam that has been significantly lacking in American literature. He discusses the war, Vietnam-American politics and the ruling Communist party with Vietnamese veterans and the younger generation as well. These conversations reveal a view of the war that contrasts entirely with the American view; as Mr. Lamb writes, the Vietnamese do not mourn the war as Americans do. Instead, they see it as proof of their national pride and perseverance. Nevertheless, Mr. Lamb provides disturbing detail of how the war tore apart the physical and social fabric of Vietnam, and how politics and old weapons still wreak their havoc today. Though brilliant, this book deals a lot with the war, both as a history of past days and the lingering effects. Mr. Lamb does go into detail about Vietnam's growing presence on the world market, burgening political reform and the somewhat restless and idealistic views of the country's youth. Yet, these themes, much like the whole of Mr. Lamb's book, always revert back to the war, as it was then and is today, so that nary a chapter is free from its mention. Thus, Mr. Lamb shows that even Americans who try to get over that bloody period can't.

                            5 out of 5 stars Vietnam Now - Wow!.......2004-05-17

In this book, David Lamb returns to Vietnam thirty years after covering the war as a journalist. He spent four years living in Hanoi and during this time he explores Vietnam and interviews many people including well-known figures of the war such as the Vietnamese Radio Personality Hanoi Hannah and General Vo Nguyen Gap. Lamb also interviews numerous Vietnamese citizens and also tags along with a group of former American and Viet Cong soldiers who are searching for reconciliation.

In Vietnam, Now, Mr. Lamb draws comparisons and contrasts and in doing so paints a vivid picture of what Vietnam of the 1960's versus what Vietnam now is like. As he states in the introduction to his book:

"The Vietnam I experienced was really two different countries, and neither had much to do with the other. The first was the Vietnam of the American War, as the Vietnamese call it... It was the Vietnam of body counts and illusionary lights at the end of the tunnel. It was a Vietnam that, I now realize, I understood shamefully little about, being largely ignorant of the country's history, culture, and people..."

"The other Vietnam is the one that wove the spell and teased me of the ghosts of a bygone Indochina... This is the postwar Vietnam, where for the first time in more than 100 years a generation has grown into adulthood not knowing foreign domination of the sound of battle... I stayed four years, far longer than I had intended, and during that time I found that nothing was quite as I had expected it to be."

It is the country, the people, and the history, that David Lamb discovers during his four year return to Vietnam, and it is the stories of this country, its people, and its history that Mr. Lamb weaves into all 270 pages of Vietnam, Now. Even though I hadn't been born yet, the writing and description in this book transported me back to the era of war and fighting now known as the Vietnam War Era. This book also did a magnificent job of placing me in Mr. Lamb's shoes during peacetime in Vietnam.

I recommend this book to anyone looking to gain knowledge about the country and people and history of Vietnam as a whole, not just as a war seen through American history books. Pick up a copy of Vietnam, Now. After reading this book you will be left with one adjective to describe it - "Wow."

                            4 out of 5 stars Eye-opener.......2004-05-12

Vietnam, Now, by David Lamb, is truly an eye-opener. This novels consists of David Lamb's accounts of visiting Vietnam both when he was a soldier during the Vietnam war, and later again about 30 years post- war. He compares and contrasts the two different time periods when he visited, with much detail, using unique writing techniques that transport the reader into Lamb's shoes. Vietnam, Now eliminates many misconceived notions of Vietnam held by many Americans today. Overall, this is a well written book and an excellent read for anyone.
