It’s absolutely breathtaking! The owners of the award-winning On the Edge Glass Studio have produced a wide-ranging, sumptuous collection of stained glass mosaic patterns that even beginners can enjoy crafting. Esteemed artists George W. Shannon and Pat Torlen offer a wealth of inspiration and instruction, as well as 23 projects for wall clocks, plaques, and hangings; trays and decorative plates; tabletops, nightstands, and headboards; and more—plus an additional ten garden stone ideas. A basics section covers everything a newcomer needs to get started—from copying the patterns to scoring and cutting to making tesserae—and individual sections focus on mosaic construction techniques and translucent mosaics. There are dozens of “Helpful Hints” boxes, as well as definitions of terminology.

A Mosaic Book.......2007-05-07
Judging from the title and the cover image, I bought this book expecting traditional stained glass patterns. The book turned out to be a rather nice collection of mosaic patterns using stained glass as tesserae and cut shapes. The book covers various projects for use in home decorating such as wall art, serving trays, table tops and garden stones. The cover image is actually a headboard for a bed.
NOT STAINED GLASS!!.......2007-04-02
I bought this book because I'm taking a stained glass class and wanted more ideas for how to incorporate pieces in my home. While the projects are beautiful, they are not stained glass but are all mosaic tiles. I was extremely disappointed with this book and wish the publishers had insisted on an accurately descriptive title for this book, especially since the piece on the cover could easily be a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired stained glass window.
Awesome mosaic book.......2007-01-30
I LOVED this book. I have quite a collection of mosaic books and this is one of the better ones, with some more advanced projects. Beautiful pictures of the projects.
Amazon.com
Despite its slim profile (only 96 pages), this guide packs a wallop. Each of the 25 step-by-step projects comes with a complete gridded and fully keyed template and a good photo of the finished item, plus there is good coverage of all the basics (tools, materials, the work area, pattern transfer, glass cutting) as well as the fundamentals of the two different techniques (direct method, and indirect or reverse method), making the base/support structures, and wall-mounting the heavy items. The lovely designs tend toward the colorfully abstract but also include florals, insects, and a beguiling mermaid on a sink backsplash. Many of the patterns are fairly intricate and include lots of curves, so the novice glass cutter may want to start with a simpler book, or else do a lot of practicing first--the authors have thoughtfully supplemented their thorough glass-cutting explanations with full-size practice patterns. --Amy Handy
Book Description
From bits of brightly colored glass, put together magical mosaics. All the information is here—selecting and cutting glass, copying and transferring patterns, and setting up a safe work area. Practice your technique on full-size patterns; helpful hints alert you to common errors, and photos capture every step. Then try 25 fabulous projects: planter boxes, wall hangings, a lily-pond birdbath, mosaic tabletops, and garden stones.

Excellent instruction on Stained Glass Mosaics.......1998-11-06
Shannon & Torlen have once again written an excellent book on stained glass instruction. They have produced an exceptional, easy to follow instruction manual with high quality photographs on Mosaics. Being a stained glass instructor, I recommend this book to all hobbyists and stained glass artists, as I do to my students. I look forward to the release of the authors third book on sandblasting, leaded glass and copper foil construction!!

Get the Edge on Flash ActionScript from the Designer's Perspective
As a professional web designer you want to use ActionScript to add interactivity to your Flash creations. But previous books on ActionScript have assumed you have a programming background, leaving out key details in order to cover a lot of ground. In the process many designers and other professionals new to programming have been left behind.
Flash MX ActionScript: The Designer's Edge fills these gaps, using a consistently visual approach that emphasizes conceptual illustrations and color charts. These are complemented by interactive tutorials on the book's companion website. Best-selling author J. Scott Hamlin and multimedia instructor Jennifer S. Hall make everything from fundamentals to high-end techniques accessible by truly teaching you how ActionScript works, not just presenting code.
Key topics you'll learn about include:
* The Flash MX interface to ActionScript
* Programming mouse interactivity
* Writing and reusing ActionScript
* Coding core animation techniques
* Working with text fields
* Doing the math: Creating curving paths with trig functions
* Handling object collisions and other gaming techniques
* ActionScript drawing techniques
* Encapsulating reusable code with ActionScript components
* Debugging and troubleshooting your ActionScript

Clear and easy to follow.......2005-05-15
Scott Hamlin and Jennifer Scott's book is clearly written and the worked examples are straightforward.
I really like the fact that the screen shots are in colour, it makes a real difference.
excellent!.......2005-01-29
I've been using Flash for awhile now and have purchased quite a few books on the subject. When I learned enough of the basics to move into actionscript, I was lost. Most of the books I had assume you are a programmer or else just dump code in your lap expecting you to just plug it in and not really know how it works. This is the first book I have found that gives you the code and explains HOW and WHY it works - and all in simple, easy to understand English. I am an artist, not a programmer, but with a book like this, I too can enter the realm of coding and truly unleash my creativity...and isn't that what it really all about?
My highest rating.
Creatively Learn ActionScript..........2005-01-11
I read it, is time consuming but it worth it. This book emphasizes on the gap between a designer and a programmer doing Flash projects, in fact the writers are, one designer and a programmer. So they will guide you through the concepts of ActionScripts considering the other side which is the design part. On it's own is a unique type of book, never seen such a great combination. Just bear in mind, this is an ActionScript 1 training book...although is an ActionScript 1 book, it will gonna help you learining ActionScript 2 faster. I like it at all ;-)
Very basic but in depth.......2003-09-12
I was looking for ActionScript books here in the Philippines and this book caught my attention when I held it in my hand.
I asked the National Bookstore lady to open the package and lo and behold! The pages are packed with full colored images.
I love reading books if they have a lot of images. This makes you more interested on finishing the book from start to finish.
I am planning to take up Flash courses and I will bring this book whenever I go. =)
One thing that was lacking was a large list of ActionScript tags. What the heck...the tutorial is more pleasing to read though.
A Must Have for ALL Designers who need help w/ ActionScript.......2003-01-05
This book is a must have for any designers library. I have wasted a lot of money buying books that were shere geek-speak. It is easy to understand. I am not a linier thinker and Flash tends to be a lineir program....I have stayed away from Flash because I have had a hard time grasping it. Scott Hamlin and Jennifer Hall have given me a tool, I can finally use to better understand Flash and Flash's actionscripting. Thank you both for the time and effort you put in to write this book. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good, easy to understand, user freindly Flash actionscripting book. Scott Hamlin's website is also a must join site for anyone looking for great tutorials on Flash files, Web Site layouts, and Photoshop files. ...

Book Description
This bawdy satire, which poses as a college guide to partying, weaves advice throughout the (true) exploits of so-called experts in the field. Like college life itself, College and the Art of Partying is alternately hilarious, ponderous, rebellious, angry and experimental. It steers clear of the cliched or usual, and takes a way-offbeat look at a 22-year-old student fumbling for the keys to kicks, truth and enlightenment as the dark cloud of graduation looms in the distance.
For many, the college years are considered to be the summit of existence. College and the Art of Partying pays strong tribute to this wild, flashing time. Irreverent, black humor pilots the trip, yet the characters' frenetic joyride is not without substance. The journey finds them regularly wresting the wheel from a present college culture that too-often cruises on automatic pilot. Thrust in a lifeless, complacent period, they respond by injecting routine partying with philosophic transcendence and defiance.

partying as an escape.......2004-11-28
This was not quite what I expected in a book about college partying. The book is very raw in areas, I suppose under the front of "honesty". The author also conveys a cynicism that makes you wonder if his search for mind altered fun isn't really just a shell in which he is trying to hide. On the bright side, the book has many areas that make you laugh.
A deep laugh.......2004-01-23
A philosophical treasure that humorously discusses living life to the fullest. This is a book with a gem of a sense of humor where the reader is never really sure what is tongue in cheek and what is on the level. Ballsy and unique.
tells it like it is.......2003-02-26
Well written and engaging throughout, College and the Art of Partying humorously reports on the perimeters of the college experience. While the writing is undisciplined and self-indulgent, and the book seems to follow its own literary rules, the reader regardless benefits immensely. Highly, recommended.
strange slice of life.......2001-10-02
Good news. Hunter S. Thompson has been reincarnated in this radical look at college life. He doesn't have as much talent in this life, but his wit is drier and much funnier. It is a journey to find yourself (and women and booze) in the liberating environment of university life. The book's stream of consciousness style misses here and then, but it has fine comedic timing, and is definately worth reading. Not at all for the squeamish.
Rare find.......2001-03-03
College and the Art of Partying was a rare reading experience. This book is a book a lot of people won't like for a lot of reasons; for one thing it sacreligiously puts kicks before all else, and rejects everything that gets in the way of them. So the book in turn reject a good part of what makes our culture tick. It speaks to a small college audience who is searching for something far beyond what the others on their floor are looking for, and it doesn't give a red hoot about anyone else. I would enjoy tweaking some sections of it in creation of a more accessible read, but it would probably lose it's soul in the meantime. There are times you get the feeling that the author is just trying to shock people who are easily shocked, and they probably were the worst sections of the book, because the passages could seem contrived. But for all the outsiders out there in college read this book--READ this book. It's speaking to you.

highly informative.......2007-05-09
I recently finished this higly informative book. I did not realize how deeply involved the Soviets were in the takeover and subsequent militarization of Cuba. The work is written with the passion of a man personally involved who deeply loves his country. It would be good to see a follow-up analysis in the years since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Why does the regime seem to be able to hang on? What affect did the visit of Pope John Paul II have on the island? I recommend this book to be read along with "Against All Hope" by Armando Valladares.
Non-indigenous nature of the communist takeover of Cuba.......2007-03-13
Carbonell, Nestor T. 1989 And the Russians Stayed: The Sovietization of Cuba: A Personal Portrait. William Morrow & Co; New York ISBN-10 0688072135 ISBN-13: 978-0688072131
The strength of this history is its attention to detail and its rejection of academic theories which erroneously postulate an indigenous nature of the communist takeover of Cuba. One notes that such academic theories are generally proposed by non-Cuban scholars who with some reprehensible frequency accept the official Cuban government history of this matter in exchange for edited access to archives in Cuba. The balancing and correcting factor and the strength of this work is the author's personal experience in Cuba, and his deep knowledge of the Cuban condition. For instance, this is one of the few books that document the role of Fabio Grobart, the Stalinist éminence gris, and his machinations that guided Fidel Castro in his take over of Cuba. This diminishes Castro from a genius of evil to the role of a "chosen one;" however, to do otherwise as so many other authors do is to give this now dying leader improbable superhuman qualities and uncanny prescience. One quibble is the characterization of the Güajiro, the proud independent Cuban country folk, as peasants, when in reality their willingness to do battle and their skill in war makes them far more akin to English Yeoman than to downtrodden country laborers; and thus making this culture far more important than is generally viewed in the military history of Cuba.
cm_garcia@msn.com.......2003-05-19
I enjoyed this book as much as a Tom Clancy novel or a JFK conspiracy story. I couldn't put it down. It revealed interesting details regarding Castro's regime and events surrounding the revolution, the Bay of Pigs Invasion, and the Cuban missle crisis. The author discusses facts about Cuba that you never hear about (outside of Miami's Cuban community). I think it could make a great movie.

May we only dare to dive this deep.......2007-04-04
I am journeying through this book with my mentor and up to this point I love it. I think we all need to take a moment to find our influence, what we are made of, and what we do with what we have been given.
My prayer is in the end I will have learned and put into action "more of what God has designed me to be".
Learn to leave a legacy.......2006-07-10
Women don't need to be spiritual super-stars to be used in ministry. But they do need to keep on growing so they can keep on reaching out. Pam's book helps women see the call to mentor other women as part of the spiritual maturity process. She does this by discussing how to develop ten character traits, all starting with "I": impassioned, individual, intimate, idealistic, interdependent, initiative, integrity, intense, inquiring, and infectious. Stories from great women of the past, those living today, and women whose lives have intersected with Pam's, all help readers see how God can develop those traits in their own lives. Mid-way through her book, Pam detours to describe what she calls "Project Esther." This is a challenge to women to remember the example of Queen Esther, the unlikely vessel God chose to do the impossible (to save the Jews from Persian annihilation). Pam's earlier involvement with Campus Crusade is reflected in her admonition to identify a unique skill (Esther's was a royal dinner party) as a means to share one's faith. For example, one woman turned a gingerbread house party into an evangelistic opportunity. Each chapter ends with an application section called "Living It Out." The book also has a personal devotional guide and a small-group discussion guide. Pam's conversational style makes you feel like you're being personally mentored by her. Her content is solid and will stir you to greater spiritual impact if truly studied and applied.
BUY THIS BOOK.......2000-01-29
This bok WILL help Christian women who want to be an influence in someone elses life. It will also help you in almost every arena of your walk with God. A very easy to read and understand book filled with stories. I highly reccommend this book to any woman who wants to make a difference.
Also a great book for bible studies or to read on your own!

Book Description
Why are women so dramatically underrepresented in formal leadership positions—and what can be done to improve the situation? This unique collection takes up these questions in the crucial practical concepts of law, politics, and business—the arenas in which women’s leadership has the most public influence. Bridging the worlds of theory and practice, the essays in this collection bring new insights to long-standing questions about the difference gender difference makes, both in access to leadership and in its exercise.
The contributors to this collection represent some of the nation’s most distinguished women leaders and most respected scholars on women and leadership, and reflect a distinctive array of perspectives and backgrounds. Among others, they include former Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder; former NOW president Patricia Ireland; the Right Honorable Kim Campbell, former prime minister of Canada; and Judith Resnik, the Arthur Liman Professor of Law, Yale Law School. Written in accessible, lively prose, and informed by a wealth of scholarship and personal experience, this collection should appeal to a broad audience.

A book that makes a Difference.......2004-04-04
As a female college student approaching graduation and faced with the prospect of beginning my career, this book offered insightful information and suggestions concerning women and leadership. This book includes a compilation of several essays written by successful and powerful women and men in response to discussions that took place during a Women's Leadership Summit. According to the foreword by Martha Barnett the women and men contributing to this piece are leaders "in government, law firms, bar associations, corporations, and academia." The editor, Deborah Rhode, introduces the book with an essay that explores `the difference difference makes'. She describes several of the obstacles still facing women in obtaining leadership positions today. She begins with overwhelming statistics that prove just how underrepresented women are in leadership positions. She identifies gender stereotypes, the lack of mentoring and networking available to women, and inflexible workplace structures that do not accommodate families as the major sources that contribute to the lack of women in leadership roles. She proposes solutions to the problem that include creating equal opportunities for women by developing mentoring programs and creating flexible and family friendly workplace schedules. She also adds that once one woman has obtained a leadership position there should be a sense of social responsibility to keep the doors open for those that follow. The rest of the book includes great essays written by prominent male and female leaders in the legal profession and government. The essays include historical facts concerning women's rights, offer suggestions for how to level the playing field, personal success stories, and the issue of racial discrimination in leadership positions. I found this book to be extremely helpful in offering several perspectives on the problem of gender and racial discrimination in the workplace. The essays provided excellent, practical knowledge that I can one day utilize to help advance my career. The reality of discrimination in the workplace was definitely a wake up call to what I will soon face, yet the advice and personal experiences of success offered encouragement that progress is possible.

For four years between 1998 and 2002, Birds Australia co-ordinated the largest continent-wide survey of birds in the world. Over 7 000 atlasers - equipped with binoculars, field guides, GPS units and notebooks - produced 270 000 bird lists and nearly five million bird records.
The New Atlas of Australian Birds marks the culmination of these efforts, presenting 4 000 distribution maps for over 650 bird species, including seasonal changes and breeding range. Change maps are also presented for 250 species, identifying those that are more common or less common since the first Atlas of Australian Birds was completed 20 years ago.
Whether birdwatching among the Snappy Gums of the Great Sandy Desert or the Snow Gums in Tasmania, The New Atlas of Australian Birds will tell you which birds you can expect to see there. Essential to environmental planners as well as bird enthusiasts, The New Atlas of Australian Birds includes a delightful range of drawings commissioned from leading Australian artists, and sets a new benchmark in our knowledge of bird distribution.
