Extraordinary Portraits.......2006-03-19

Don Farber is a fine photographer and has produced a profoundly moving book containing the portraits of many of the greatest contemporary Tibetan Lamas. The book itself is well and beautifully made so it will give years of use. Very simply designed, it devotes two facing pages to each master, with a brief biography and quotation on the left and a full-page portrait on the right.

Farber has captured something of each of these masters. As Sogyal Rinpoche points out in his Foreword, "In the Vajrayana tradition of Tibet there is a method called thong drol, 'liberation upon seeing'. I believe that images of masters, such as these are endowed with a real power of communication and transmission. I remember, growing up in Tibet, that whenever they sat for a photo, the great masters would always, quite naturally, already be in a state of the nature of mind, of unaltered pure awareness, which is what would be directly communicated to anyone seeing their pictures, only depending, of course, on how receptive he or she might be." Perhaps this accounts for the power of many of these portraits.

Not everyone is here - Farber, despite his best efforts, was unable to photograph some of the most revered Lamas, such as Chatral Rinpoche. But then others - Kalu Rinpoche for example - are here twice - in their previous and present incarnations. This book is a beautiful historical document, and for those connected by practice and lineage to any of these masters, it is more.

This isn't just a book, it's a party game! I thought I knew all there was to know about my favorite movie but this book showed that I still had lots to learn. I threw a GREASE party and used the book. WE HAD A BLAST!!!! It made the party! If you love the movie you have to buy this book.

Don't waste your time..........2007-05-20

This book starts off promising, covering in slim detail some of the more well-known causes of fatigue (lack of sleep, poor diet, minimal exercise) and then goes on to discuss different approaches to wellbeing, both Western and Eastern. However, the book quickly devolves into a mish-mash of anectdote's about the authors' personal life (apparently they are always energetic and as such all their "tricks" must work for most everyone.) While slowly veering off its original intention, "Stop Feeling Tired!" becomes more focused on simplifying your life as a means of improving your overall wellbeing. The idea here is that the fatigue is caused by numerous factors. However, the last half of the book seems to not hold faithful to those ideas. It seems unorganized and at times loaded with filler. Lastly, the final 1/4 of the book turns into an out-of-left field pitch for Christianity. While the authors knowingly mention other forms of "spirituality", they focus on Christianity (their admitted religion.) They even go so far as to mention the questionable study which found that hospital patients who were prayed for recovered faster than one's who weren't prayed for. Wait just a second... am I trying to improve my energy levels or be converted to Christianity? If you are a Christian and happy, good for you, this book may line up well with your ideals. If you are not, or are of another religion, I suggest you steer clear of this book. The fact that the push for Christianity was hidden at the end of the book is in poor taste and is undeserving of the money of unsuspecting non-Christians.

Simplify, simplify, simplify.......2006-10-23

A quick read and a good book to begin learning some techniques for simplifying your life, finding balance, and feeling less tired. The authors are clear that, barring a medical condition requiring treatment by a physician, fatigue can be addressed through an understanding of the mind-body connection. The authors offer some very practical ideas for stress reduction and include a discussion of nutrition and how diet affects our mood and energy-level. If you're interested in feeling better, less tired, and are ready and willing to change your life, this book is a good place to begin the journey. Many of the ideas put forth in this book are also found in Dr. Andrew Weil's 8 Weeks to Optimum Health.

Well Written, Well Documented - and Fascinating.......2006-04-24

When one thinks of the Civil War one does not immediately think of the hospitals and the myriad of problems associated with them. This extremely well researched and documented book goes into fascinating detail of the people, the problems and how they worked to overcome problems of shortages, constantly moving with the tide of battle campaigns and organization in times of limited communication. This is an extremely important look at a subject that gets far less attention than it deserves.
