Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just what we wanted.......2006-02-19

I do have a weakness for Mary Engelbreit - not really the queen for a day stuff - but I particularly like her illustrations of young girls reading etc. So we have an 8 year old daughter who loves reading but is compulsively forgetful about library day and all things school (as well as everything else!) etc. so I have put these posters around the house where they are eye catching - she will hopefully read them and they'll make her feel good and their gorgeous detail will inspire her and then she'll remember to think of her school things needed - ha!ha!ha! :) And even if this highly sophisticated plan doesn't work - I will enjoy them everytime I walk past! The cardboard is lovely quality, the colours beautifully reproduced and the selection of illlustrations timelessly appealing. Highly recommended to anyone involved in the daily lives of young learners and readers.

        Book Description

A celebration of the San Francisco films of Alfred Hitchcock, this book examines the master director's familiarity with Northern California and how it greatly influenced his decision to use the Bay Area location in several of his landmark motion pictures. More importantly, this book shows how San Francisco was often the source of inspiration for many of these same cinema classics. The masterpieces that are examined are Shadow of a Doubt, Vertigo, The Birds, Suspicion, Psycho, and Family Plot. Hitchcock fans are taken on a journey around the Bay Area, experiencing cinemagraphic intrigue and learning about Bay Area history, lore, and the timeless elegance of San Francisco and its picturesque surroundings. Hundreds of historical and contemporary photos are included, with an emphasis on those buildings and businesses that no longer exist.

3 out of 5 stars packed full of facts and photos.......2007-09-28

I always figured that Hitchcock's roots were in England or Hollywood, but after reading this book, I realized that he had many connections to the San Francisco area. Smart man.

The amount of detail in this book can be overwhelming, but if you just peruse it and enjoy the photos, it's fun. And it's especially useful if you are planning a trip to the Bay Area and enjoy seeing movie locations.

1 out of 5 stars Order not received yet.......2007-02-08

Subject of order not received yet. However, according to your confirmation, the deadline for the delivery estimate was Feb 14. So, I am still waiting. The reason for the rate "1 star" is that otherwise the review would not be submitted. I surely expect to revise the rate as soon as I get and read the book.

3 out of 5 stars Cinema history and travel guide.......2007-01-19

We used "Footsteps in the Fog" to plan part of a recent vacation to the San Francisco Bay area, including a trip down to San Juan Bautista. Not at all a conventional travel guide, but very useful for a Hitchcock fan visiting the area!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Hitchcock lovers!.......2006-09-01

I have been a fan of Hitchcock since I was little as one of my dad's favorite films is "The Birds" and he and I watched it many times while I was growing up. After I got older I discovered some of Hitch's other films and have loved his work for quite a while.

I was able to visit San Francisco and northern California in 2004 and one of the places I wanted to visit while there was Bodega Bay where they filmed The Birds. We rented a car and drove up the coast to Bodega Bay and it was in the Bodega Bay restaurant/gift shop where I bought this book and spent most of the flight back home reading it and once home I couldn't put it down. It is wonderful and the authors couldn't have done a better job with their research.

I had only seen Vertigo once before I bought the book, but have since bought it on DVD and really love it and love all the details in the book about the filming locations, etc.

A few weeks ago Encore Mystery had a marathon of Hitch movies in honor of his birthday and I got out the book and re-read parts of it while watching Vertigo. It is amazing to me how detailed the authors are with their photos of the filming locations and how they looked then and now. Lots of great little tidbits about the locations too!

        Great book and highly recommended!!!!

        5 out of 5 stars Undiscovered Country.......2006-06-19

This is undiscovered country if you have not been paying close attention to your Hitchcock films. The concept of this book is intuitive. These places were there all along in all of Hitchcock's film. But San Francisco seems to hold a special place for Hitchcock. This is a rich study into the meaning that San Francisco holds fot Hitchcock.

5 out of 5 stars Best Bridge Primer.......2007-08-04

I am a bridge player of long experience, and this is the best book for beginners I ever saw.

2 out of 5 stars A unique book; but far from the best.......2007-04-11

As one of the other reviewers noted, there is a dearth of good introductory bridge books. This book is not bad, but it is very busy and focuses on memorizing rules -- not a good thing, despite the numerous cartoons designed to help you remember. The book is a bit childish and might be good for teaching a kid, I can't see an adult using this to learn with though.

Most of the other books are at least slightly better. Root's ABC's of Bridge is more thorough and less busy, and Penick's Beginning Bridge Complete will get you playing much quicker. But even these books are heavy on memory work and light on teaching you to think. Furthermore, because all of these books are focusing on memorizing instead of thinking things through, they frequently "simply" modern bidding to make it "easier" to learn. Doing this however, destroys the logic behind the bidding, making it almost impossible for a beginner to learn.

INSTEAD OF THIS BOOK, you should get Alan Truscott's Bridge in 3 weeks, the absolute best book, and the *only* one I'd recommend. The writing is superb, which you would expect from the Bridge editor of the NY Times. The book focuses on teaching you to think at the table and will get you playing the game quickly. More over because this book focuses on logic instead of memorization, it actually teaches you to bid and play in the way that most actual players do, making it easier to advance beyond the book.

5 out of 5 stars The best bridge book for beginners.......2007-01-22

Not the ONLY book a beginner should read, but definitely one that ALL bridge players should read. Useful, handy, easy to understand, Lampert can have a complete novice "playing" in one hour.

1 out of 5 stars Same old, same old.... Useless!.......2006-04-15

I have been trying to learn bridge for quite a while now. I have gone through a lot of books at the beginner's level. This one was my first one ever I got and, NATURALLY, it was not that helpful; too dense. There were certain things that annoyed me then, but mostly the underlying lack of reasoning which was replaced by the copious use of mnemonics.

This was the way my bridge odyssey started: looking for books that showed the logic and principles of the game. Surprisingly, I could barely find any! Even the "bibles" written by the "gurus" fail to teach rational thinking when it comes to bridge. Instead, what they really present are flowcharts, decision trees, and point ranges to remember. Then, we the readers are just trying to find easy ways to memorize unconnected snippets.

It is for this reason that bridge is so diificult to learn: there are no teachers out there, just people who have been playing forever and had no chance to forget what they have memorized over the years. Unless you feel like playing a few hundred rubbers per month, most books on bridge are useless to someone who has daily obligations.

Along the way, the bridge community lost the ability to transmit the ability to play the game. Bridge has only survived because of passionate rookies like us who are willing to go through the pain of reading these "books" and then connecting the dots.

So, going back to this book, I now realise that you cannot learn from this book, and once you have learned you do not need this book.

The books that you can learn from are the books by Root and the book by Watson, both written by great teachers. However, reading them is a brutal experience in dry writting.

4 out of 5 stars Thin, but densely packed...where are the cartoons?.......2004-02-20

My impression when I picked this book up was that there would be tons of cartoons to help remember all of the "rules", e.g, my partner bids 1S, my hand has 10 points, therefore I should do this. In my view, there are not enough cartoons to really help remember the material. So, from this point of view, the book is not successful. Where the book does shine is in its highly concentrated explanation of the basics. I carry this book in my briefcase and read portions of it every day. Think of this book as a supplementary collection of notes to augment your other bridge books. This would be an good, inexpensive textbook for a 10-week class on bridge basics, for example. I think if you really learn the material in this book, you will be a very good beginner with ample room to grow.

Dr. Stuart Hoffman is a Chiropractor specializing in children's care. Together, they have created a series of books and Audio CDs. There is also a plush toy - the Lovable Me Bug.

In this cheerful and affirmative book, children learn to breathe deeply and to control their emotions through conscious breathing techniques.

"If I feel sad and lonely,
I take a deep breath in and breathe out slowly....
This helps me feel calm and at ease,
safe and sound as I please."

On the first page there is a list of reasons why it is good to breathe more deeply. Then, throughout the pages, we find the Lovable Me bug relaxing with a book, wandering in a garden, playing with friends and cleaning house.

This book may also be useful to teach children how to calm themselves when they experience tantrums or anger spells.

5 out of 5 stars A picturebook encouraging young readers to "take a DEEEP breath in" to gain strength from their own courage and inner peace.......2005-07-06

The second book in the "I Am a Lovable ME!" self-empowerment series, I Take a DEEEP Breath is a picturebook encouraging young readers to "take a DEEEP breath in" to gain strength from their own courage and inner peace, then "breathe out" fear and doubt in order to confront new challenges. Simple rhyming verse and four-color illustrations of a friendly six-legged beetle learning to grow from new challenges every day offer an inspiring example of the power of breath when used to focus on positive thoughts and emotions. Highly recommended. "If my parents get angry with me / I take a deeep breath in and breathe out slowly. / I'm not sad anymore; I know they love / me for sure!"

                          Book Description

Gasps, sighs, and yawns are recognized by even a casual observer as involuntary expressions of emotion through the "medium" of respiration. In recent years, scientific observation has focused on sensation and behavior as researchers investigate the relation of emotion and stress in disorders such as asthma, hyperventilation, and panic disorder. Until now, however, the interplay of psychological factors and physiological responses has not been approached from the interdisciplinary perspective reported in this book. Brought together here is the work of physiologists, psychologists, and researchers in behavioral medicine, together with - for the first time - specialists and practitioners of traditional Japanese arts and culture. Knowledge of the art and control of breathing, which are essential features of such disciplines as Zen and Noh, opens a new and until now unexplored path for scientists seeking to understand the relation between respiration and emotion.

                            Description:
We investigated respiratory responses during film clip viewing and their relation to the affective dimensions of valence and arousal. Seventy-six subjects participated in a study using a between groups design. To begin with, all participants viewed an emotionally neutral film clip. Then, they were presented with one out of four emotional film clips: a positive high-arousal, a positive low-arousal, a negative high-arousal and a negative low-arousal clip. Respiration, skin conductance level, heart rate, corrugator activity and affective judgments were measured. Expiratory time was shorter and inspiratory duty cycle, mean expiratory flow and minute ventilation were larger during the high-arousal clips compared to the low-arousal clips. The pleasantness of the stimuli had no influence on any respiratory measure. These findings confirm the importance of arousal in respiratory responding but also evidence differences in comparison to previous studies using visual and auditory stimuli.

                              Description:
Previous research has demonstrated covariation of physiological responding with judgments of valence and arousal. However, until now links between these affective dimensions and respiratory measures have not been extensively investigated. In this study, eight picture series of different affective valence and arousal level were shown to 30 subjects, while respiration, skin conductance level (SCL), heart rate (HR) and affective judgments were measured. With increasing pleasantness, inspiratory time lengthened, mean inspiratory flow decreased and thoracic breathing increased. With increasing arousal, inspiratory time and total breath duration shortened and mean inspiratory flow, minute ventilation, thoracic breathing and electrodermal activity increased. These findings confirm the importance of arousal in respiratory responding, but also indicate a modulatory role of affective valence. We propose that the arousal effects reflect energy mobilization in preparation to act, and that the valence effects might be a manifestation of an attention bias toward negative stimuli.

                              Book Description

The 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry suffered the second highest number of battle deaths of all the Union regiments, in every theater, throughout the course of the Civil War. They endured decimation at the battles of the Seven Days, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. However, this hardy and determined unit was able to overcome loss, defeat and heartache through their enduring defense and preservation of the Union line during the pivotal battle of Gettysburg.

This book offers the first-ever comprehensive history of the 83rd Pennsylvania. It combines official war records, personal remembrances of veterans of the regiment, information derived from opposing Confederates, and secondary sources to produce a remarkable story of leadership, endurance, hardship and triumph. Actions and events are analyzed from multiple viewpoints. Overall, a detailed and thorough picture is offered of the 83rd's contribution to the preservation of the Union and defeats.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent regimental history.......2006-01-28

The 83rd PA Volunteers was organized in October 1861 and saw a great deal of hard combat before mustering out after Appomattox. Made up of recruits mainly from the northwest part of the state, its most glorious moments probably occurred on Little Round Top at Gettysburg, where in a desperate fight (alongside the fabled Joshua Chamberlain-led 20th ME) it helped stave off a Confederate attack. Schellhammer's history of the regiment is historically detailed yet excitingly told, and is one of the best regimental histories I've seen.

Schellhammer's strength lies in the fact that he never forgets he is writing about people, about men who fought and suffered, and not just about "events" that in some hazy way involved soldiers. He quotes often (but not too often) from soldiers' diaries and letters to make his account as humanly interesting as possible. Though he traces the regiment's complete Civil War itinerary, he is especially detailed when describing its actions on the Peninsula in the spring of '62, at Gaines Mill in June (where the regiment lost its first commander, Col. John McLane), at Malvern Hill a few days later, at Fredericksburg in December, and at Gettysburg (where its second commander, Col. Strong Vincent, was killed on Little Round Top). The 83rd lost about half its men to battlefield death, wounding, disease, or capture; 282 died in battle: only one other Union regiment (5th New Hampshire Infantry) lost more men killed in battle (295). Schellhammer writes with style and verve, and this book should find a welcomed place on anyone's Civil War shelf. Highly recommended.

                              4 out of 5 stars The 83rd PA Vols........2005-09-11

I had personal reasons for reading this book. . . an ancestor served with the 83rd and I'm researching materials to authenticate copies of letters the family has in its possession. It's extremely well-written, thorough. I particularly liked the history of northwestern Pennsylvania. I've read Judson's book and approve of the quotes the author used. I was a little disappointed that the narrative stops after Gettysburg but can understand the author's choice in ending at this point. I would rate this 5 star except for the poor proofreading/editing. This is a day when a "manuscript" goes from disk to print through a computer and too many little errors were allowed to remain in the text. . . not when it concerned facts, thankfully, and therefore is the reason I can give it a high rating, but the errors broke the harmony of the written word. Any CW buff would find this an "excellent read."

5 out of 5 stars authentic, historical, and a page turner.......2003-10-03

Prior to reading this book, my idea of torture was to be locked in a room with nothing to read but military books. Lucky for me that I stumbled on this book after searching for P.J. O'Rourke's latest and saw that he wrote the foreword. I was hooked about 20 pages in when it became clear that the author's intent was entirely different than the typical dissection of military battles and tactics that so many civil war books dwell upon. Through letters and journals of the soldiers of the 83rd, we see the war entirely from their perspective. Their day-to-day activities, their views about the war, and their emotional state during horrific losses, tedious marches, and adrenaline inducing victories. It never loses its feel of authenticity because the author, through obviously mind-boggling research, never has to guess what the men were thinking. This book never veers off in the unconvincing and awkward ways that some historical fiction does when authors try to "put themselves in the shoes" of someone who lived hundreds of years ago. Those attempts often ring false in ways that this book never does. Read this book and I guarantee you will not only think about Strong Vincent, Oliver Norton, Seth Waid, Amos Judson, and the other men of the 83rd long after finishing, but your esteem for what they accomplished will grow as well.

Judson's book was one of the first regimental history books to come from the Civil War. His book is also one of the best I have read. The book starts with the regiment's formation and continues throughout the war. It is a first-hand account of the war, with the exception of the last year of the war. Capt. Judson mustered out in 1864 and used accounts from other members of the 83rd to cover the events till the end of the war. You will find the book filled with small details and stories of camp life and battle that make the book very interesting to read. This is an excellent account of one of the top Federal units of the Civil War and a "must read" for reenactors.

One in ten American children has a parent under criminal justice supervision—incarcerated, on probation, or on parole. One in thirty-three American children—and one in eight African American children—goes to sleep without access to a parent because that parent is in jail. Despite these staggering numbers, the children of prisoners remain largely invisible to society.

Following in the tradition of the bestseller Random Family, journalist Nell Bernstein shows, through the deeply moving stories of real families, how the children of the incarcerated are routinely punished for their parents' status: ignored, neglected, stigmatized, and endangered, with minimal effort made to help them cope.

Topics range from children's experiences at the time of their parent's arrest, to laws and policies that force even low-level offenders to forfeit their parental rights, to alternative sanctions that take into account prisoners' status as mothers and fathers.
All Alone in the World defines a crucial aspect of criminal justice and, in doing so, illuminates a critical new realm of human rights.

A sensitive portrait of the realities of being a child whose parents, one or both are incarcerated.
Well written and tugs at the heart strings! Makes you reflect and think soberly and seriously about this reality for many children. How are they supposed to rise above their unfair and undeserved label? They are also much a victim of their parent's crime and serve their sentences with them.

Every child welfare worker and teacher should read this for insight to the children they come in contact with.

We have failed to measure the true cost of our policy of incarcerating offenders and Nell Bernstein describes the costs that we have yet to pay. The damage done to a whole generation of young people who have grown up without their incarcerated parents are coming of age, and we need to recognize and address the problems that the punishment policy has caused.

Ms. Bernstein has introduced us to these children and the sadness that they will carry for the rest of their lives. She makes us care. She has also given us a well researched review of the system and the problems that have been created by society as well as making suggestions on how to prevent or diminish the damage that we are doing.

A must read for anyone who cares about the health of our society.

The SF Chronicle says it better than I could so I am pasting part of their review below:

"Chapter by chapter, Bernstein takes us through each lamentable phase of the incarceration cycle, from arrest to sentencing, to visitations and foster care and finally re-entry. She interviews scores of experts -- police officers, criminologists, sociologists and dedicated service providers, many of them reformed offenders who would never have been released from prison had they committed their crimes today. But Bernstein...derives her best expert testimony from the families themselves, whom she treats not as victims of an unjust system but rather as experts and resources, the best available analysts of their own experience and needs.

Bernstein ... lays out 18 policy suggestions [in her conclusion]. Most of them are pure common sense -- remove financial barriers to communication (like the hiked-up fee for collect calls from jail), keep prisoners near their families so they can receive visits, and of course revisit our failed drug policies. What her suggestions have in common, besides being relatively easy (and cheap) to implement, is that they are focused on the basic premise that crime is reduced by keeping families together, not ripping them apart.

In terms of elegance, breadth and persuasiveness, "All Alone in the World" deserves to be placed alongside other classics of the genre such as Jonathan Kozol's "Savage Inequalities," Alex Kotlowitz's "There Are No Children Here" and Adrian Nicole LeBlanc's "Random Family." But to praise the book's considerable literary or sociological merit seems beside the point. This book belongs not only on shelves but also in the hands of judges and lawmakers. "

5 out of 5 stars a great book for anyone concerned our contemporary America.......2005-11-13

Its always easy to blame individuals for society's ills, it's been the American way for at least in the second half of the 20th Century.

Maybe that is not always the case. Maybe our complex country -- especially its justice system -- is a lot more nuanced. Author Bernstein offers a glimpse into some truly horrifying machinations that go on in today's America, all in the name of protecting our communities. Some 2.4 million children nationwide have a parent behind bars. That is more the entire population of Denver, Colorado and its six-county suburbs. Offering intimate portraits of a numerous kids who are affected by the mass incarceration of non-violent felons in the 90s, she then connects the dots to show that through community neglect, governmental policy and condemnation by self-righteous citizens, we are neglecting our own.

All is not bleak in Bernstein's world though, the resilience of many of the spotlighted kids is dramatic and emotional and she showcases some efforts and individuals (including cops) that are emerging to help change this social abomination. Another way to look at the problem is to ask ourselves when a huge number of our country's youngest members - more than the population of a major metro area - are affected by a horrible problem not of their making, how can this be only their burden to bear? Now is time for us to apply the precept of reaching out to and helping "the least of these brothers of mine." And "All Alone in the World" is call to action.

1 out of 5 stars Typical blame-the-system claptrap absolving criminals of any responsibility.......2005-11-13

This book tries to tug at your heartstrings by portraying the plight of blameless kids whose parents are in prison. Everyone can agree that their situation is sad and they have tough lives to lead. But this theme is only a mask to disguise the author's true intent, which is to criticize the very concept of imprisonment and to lay the blame on the "racist," "classist" system. This is the equivalent of dropping a bowling ball on someone's foot and saying, "Hey, it's not my fault -- blame gravity!" There is almost no mention of the true villains in this situation: the parents themselves, who chose to commit criminal acts that endanger and degrade society.

As a prototypical example taken from the book: Say a young child has a father who is a drug dealer. The father is caught and sent to jail for a long time, so that the child grows up fatherless. Sure, that is a tragedy for the drug dealer's child, but is it society's fault, or the criminal's fault? The author implies that it would be better to let the drug dealer out of prison to help raise his child. But then what of the consequences? What if he goes back to being drug dealer (which is highly likely), then ALL THE OTHER CHILDREN IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD have their lives negatively impacted when this criminal turns their block into a crime zone.

It is this kind of muddled thinking typified by this book that shows the moral bankruptcy of the New PC Police. In order to potentially help one child (and even that is debatable -- criminal parents often do a bad parenting job), we are expected to endanger the lives and well-beings of hundreds of other children. Taken to its logical conclusion, the "solution" promoted by this author (who is part of the radical movement to shut down all prisons and release all prisoners) would be to create a society in which criminals run free and there are no consequences for hurtful or irresponsible acts. In other words: her true goal is to turn all of America into a seething slum, in which the seeds of a socialist revolution can more easily be sown. Her gimmick of playing on your emotions by discussing the sad children of criminals is nothing more than a mechanism to promote her ultimate agenda.

The children of prisoners do have tough lives. And the people to blame are their parents, who choose to hurt others and society at large by committing crimes. Every sane society segregates criminals from the general population for the benefit of all.

I think it is deplorable that you should be selling a 3 page document for $10! Especially disappointing is throughout the article, someone named Bernstein is mentioned as though s/he wrote the book. From the bibliographic citation, it seems the book was written by Deborah Volat, a certified professional midwife. Who is Neil Bernstein? Is this a review of a review of Volat's book?
