Addressing fundamental problems in modern Western approaches to art, this bold, brilliant and important book proposes a new and flexible conceptual frame-work for the analysis and understanding of all art by replacing the notion of the 'visual arts' with that of
the 'spatial arts', which comprise two fundamental categories: 'real space' and 'virtual space'. Real space
is the space we share with other people and things, and its fundamental arts are sculpture - the art of personal space - and architecture, the art of social space. Virtual space, representing real space in two dimensions, as in paintings, drawings and prints, always entails a format in real space, thus making real space the primary category.
Using these distinctions and adopting a wide definition of art that in principle embraces anything
that is made, the author examines some of the basic characteristics of all art in a survey that traces the development of human skill from the first hominid tools to the sophisticated universal three-dimensional grid of modern technology, which he describes as
'metaoptical' space. Successive chapters deal with facture, refinement and the discovery of abstract relations; the making of places, boundaries and alignments; the creation of centres and the relations between art, order and political power; the origins of three-dimensional, planar and virtual images; planarity and the development of measures, ratios and grids; virtual images, the development of perspective and the essentially centreless metaoptical world of Western modernism.
This new conceptual framework enables us to treat all traditions on an equal footing and to understand opposition and conflict both within and between cultures. Formalism and other Western approaches to art are not rejected, but are recognised without universal validity being claimed for them.
Throughout, the author insists that art can never be separated from the primary spatial conditions of its uses. His long-awaited study will stimulate people to think in new and fruitful ways about the human purposes of art, and also to think more deeply and critically about the relations between art, political order and technology.

Excellent Addition to DC Range.......2005-03-30
Legacy is an excellent addition to the DC Heroclix range. It adds some very powerful figures (mostly Uniques) in the form of Ares, General Zod, Mongul, Ultra-Man, and several more Kingdom Come characters. But the basic line of figures is also impressive, with Arsenal, Captain Atom, the Demon, Hourman, Jade, Major Force, Mister Freeze, Mister Terrific, Obsidian, Superboy, and Superwoman, among many others.
The sculpts on these new figures are generally quite good, although the poses for Ravager and Talia could have used a little more differentiation. My current favorites from the new set are the sculpts for the Demon, Mister Freeze, and the Kingdom Come Green Lantern.
I have an objection to the rating on Arsenal--he has a higher value than his mentor Green Arrow! Actually, Arsenal's rating is probably okay; Green Arrow was undervalued and needs to have a corrected dial (perhaps in the upcoming ICONS set?).
The new teams--Calculators, Crime Syndicate, and Outsiders--are good additions to the series, although the selection of characters for the Calculators doesn't seem to track with the group of villains most recently seen in IDENTITY CRISIS. And I like the addition of the bystanders, conditions, and feats. The DC expansions for Heroclix, in my estimation, continue to outshine their Marvel counterparts.

Shallow.......2002-03-30
Unfortunately I was mislead by the picture at the front cover. Beware this is NOT a book for filmmakers, but for first year Film School students. Most of it's contents I knew when I was 15 years old. So mainly it is a waste of time (and money). Unless you want to hear elementary "rules" about the 1/3 image composition, or finding out that the author considers you are too dumn to understand how a HMI works.
There is only one area where the author (obviously a teacher) excells, and that is in the field of lighting with the help of a Sekonic L-398. If you still have one of those respectable relics in a drawer, do not throw it away, there is a lot about it to learn in this book. But whether it is worth the hefty price, will be your own judgment.
The BEST general book on film production!.......2002-02-08
I've been fortunate to have the author, Bruce Mamer, as a teacher, and can tell you from first hand experience that his knowledge of the subject is comprehensive. Without a doubt, this is THE book to start with if you're serious about making films. Bruce covers all the bases from crew roles, pre-production, and composition to film stocks, lighting, and exposure (to name just a few of the topics covered). Any intelligent, free-thinking individual could read this one book and discover everything they need to start shooting. You can fill in the rest with a critical mind (but that's true of anything).
Everything Bruce knows is in this book, and everything he teaches in class comes directly from it as well. The only thing missing is your idea, talent, time, and equipment.
You won't regret the investment made in this HOW-TO manual for filmmaking!
So...what are you waiting for? Go make your film!!!

I can barely express how far superior this book is to the restof what's out there. I'll try, of course, but first let me tell you how I arrived at this conclusion.
I looked through all of the books on Amazon that fell under the category of Cinematography, and then chose about the top 25 rated ones. I went to Inter-Library Loans at my university and requested them all. I got about a dozen.
Of all I got, this one, while broad (which I would have thought to be a disadvantage) was by far the most engrossing and the principles were illustrated (graphically and rhetorically) with a clarity that is unusual and tough to achieve. I'm really going to go off on the lighting section of the book (4 chapters, count 'em- "Concepts and Equipment" (which is as far as most books get), "Exposure and Latitude," "Planning the Lighting" (Hallelujah!)and "Executing the Lighting."
Some great advantages: Most of the books I got read like a lighting catalog (this is a tweenie, this is a mini-mole, this is a HMI blah-blah...) As a student filmmaker, that just wastes my time. I don't have access to 10,000 watt HMIs or ultra-specialized fiber-optic lighting kits, so why should I buy a book that more or less advertises them?
One other great strength- They show a photo of a well lit scene (typical) and then pull back with a diagram illustrating the lighting that has achieved this (Unusual for most books, standard for this one). This shouldn't have to be a revelation, but it is.
My interest in this book was sparked with the great lighting section, but there are some other sections stand out: Composition, Previsualization, Basic Scene structure.
The rest of the book is thorough in examining the underlying principles at work: lens, film stocks, audio (with a great section on recording strategies- wow, not just another explanation of a cardioid mic pattern).
I plan on begging, pleading, threatening, blackmailing or whatever means prove neccessary to convince my film professors that this should be our standard text. I would have had an infinitely better time of things on past projects if I had had it.

I had Bruce, the author, as my film production teacher not too long ago. "Film Production Technique" isn't some esoteric diatribe, it is a nuts and bolts "how to" book on film production. The book is thoughtfully laid out, plain spoken, and punctuated with helpful diagrams and pictures.
Intended for the novice, Mamer's book is an indispensable reference for the seasoned film maker as well.
If you have the nerve, "Film Production Technique" will show you how to make your idea a reality.

Out of the half dozen coloring books we bought last year this one was our favorite. Every design felt well thought out and was quite fun to color. My only complaint is that there weren't more pictures to color. This is well worth buying if you're looking for a challenge to your coloring skills.

I ordered 6 coloring books on the same day, and out of all of them, this one IS my FAVORITE. The designs are more than meaningless geometric shapes. They're really pretty!! And the pages are nice and big, and you can tear them out!! So you don't have to worry about that annoying bump getting in the way when you're trying to color.
MAIN POINT the designs are pretty :) I recommend.

Borders are where wars start, as Primo Levi once wrote. But they are also bridges - that is, sites for ongoing cultural exchange. Anyone studying how nations and states maintain distinct identities while adapting to new ideas and experiences knows that borders provide particularly revealing windows for the analysis of 'self' and 'other'. In representing invisible demarcations between nations and peoples who may have much or very little in common, borders exert a powerful influence and define how people think as well as what they do. Without borders, whether physical or symbolic, nationalism could not exist, nor could borders exist without nationalism.
Surprisingly, there have been very few systematic or concerted efforts to review the experiences of nation and state at the local level of borders. Drawing on examples from the US and Mexico, Northern Ireland, Israel and Palestine, Spain and Morocco, as well as various parts of Southeast Asia and Africa, this timely book offers a comparative perspective on culture at state boundaries. The authors examine the role of the state, ethnicity, transnationalism, border symbols, rituals and identity in an effort to understand how nationalism informs attitudes and behaviour at local, national and international levels. Soldiers, customs agents, smugglers, tourists, athletes, shoppers, and prostitutes all provide telling insights into the power relations of everyday life and what these relations say about borders.
This overview of the importance of borders to the construction of identity and culture will be an essential text for students and scholars in anthropology, sociology, political science, geography, nationalism and immigration studies.

Very interesting book, great perspective from lots of different authors on diverse social issues such a racial inequality, gender, and sexual orientation. The framework essays are also particularly interesting - I highly recommend it for anyone interested in sociological issues!

This book is great for anyone who is interested in questions like why do we as Americans' see white people and black people differently. It answers questions like this for gender, race, ethnicity and disability. The first chapter is terribly dry but it sets the stage for the rest of the book which is very insightful.
(There's a bit of good history in here as well).

This book gives a very broad and encompassing look at many of the topics that contribute to and affect diversity and differences in America today.
College Textbook.......2005-03-04
While the text offers important thought provoking articles and essays on Race Gender and Social Issues, it is not Student friendly text. A text with such a wide array of information should offer a section of review at the end of each reading. By having a review "for students", it ensures an understanding of concepts and objectives. Furthermore, it offers students a place to review when studying for exams. I give the text a 5 star rating for the informative articles and essays but 1 star for none existing review material.
