Book Description
Recently Released Breaking the ceramic arts up into incisive, historic, award-winning essays, Shards is an anthology of writings by Garth Clark, one of the most noted proponents of the medium. The writings in this volume span 25 years of Clark's important career as a critic, historian, and dealer in ceramics. The compilation is divided into two parts and features over 150 duotones of seminal ceramic works. Part one deals with artists and contains catalogue and exhibition essays that focus on individual artists--contemporary and historic, domestic and foreign. Part two is dedicated to issues, including American ceramic history and general history; criticism, theory, scholarship, and semantics; function and design; and finally, the marketplace. This volume also contains, among many of Clark's seminal works, six previously unpublished articles, several on artists and others confronting some of the field's more controversial topical issues. Sure to raise hackles among ceramists, not least of all among ceramics' many teachers, is the chapter "Ceramic Education and the Culture of Amateurism." Artists and students alike will be compelled and delighted by some of Clark's best and most recent musings on maverick artists like British potter Grayson Perry, widely collected and celebrated by the likes of Charles Saatchi and Damien Hirst. Shards is the most comprehensive grouping of Clark's writings to date.

Very helpful guide.......2007-02-11
It's hard to find a decent book with patterns and meaurements for paper theatres, so it's a great thing to have this book - a great variety of models and kinds of theatres to build, advice for the beginner, and additional information about types of media. One thing that annoyed me was that some of the patterns didn't supply a few basic dimensions, and I had to guess - very risky with an art so precise. It also does a poor job of explaining what this fold or that cut is actually going to do for the theatre. Confusing stuff.
However, my first theatre was a success and looks lovely, and I'm in the process of making another one with doubled dimensions!
Great book!
Thank you Robert Burgess.......2001-09-25
Worth every dime! What an excellent book! Easy to understand and an absolute pleasure to read and read again. It's beautifully put together. I so much appreciate the generosity of artists who share their knowledge (and 'how to's) with me. I have just begun to include toy theatre workshops in my repetoire of SKY HIGH workshops and this book is an incredible resourse. I will encourage all my students (and creative friends) to purchase Robert's book.
Well done!.......2000-08-06
Robert's book is visually stimulating in colour and design and easy to understand.... This book would make any paper arts enthusiast want to start making paper theatres.. It also includes a Card Theatre that can be mailed.... Well done! The only problem I had was finding Mr. Burgess' website, the address must have changed.....
what an unusual and super book.......2000-06-15
how refreshing to find such an exquisite book on this very interesting subject. I made all the theatres and they were a joy to construct following the easy to understand directions. Robert burgess' hand drawn illustrations are beautiful. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a slight interest, young and old

Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide 2005.......2005-10-04
It gives good insight into the various movies available over many years. It helps when I decide to view a movie on my cable tv.
One of the best Movie Guides.......2005-09-13
I don't think anyone could find a more economically price guide for movies, with such good coverage of: Directors, Actors, a synopsis of the storyline, and star rating system. I don't rent a movie without first checking out what Leonard Maltin has written about it. Highly recommend.
Must have reference.......2005-09-06
I hadn't had one of these in a decade, but it is even better than I remembered. All the facts, just the facts, and I agree with him most of the time. Even found my oddball and other classics there. Thanks for a great tool to use with my kids.
not good for international movies.......2005-08-13
i used to buy this every year but i now buy the superior timeout guide.theres just too many mistakes on some of my favourite films.leonard maltin is way overated.for most hollywood films its fine but when it comes to international movies it struggles
The industry standard.......2005-08-08
I first came across the Leonard Maltin film books in the late 1970's--what a resource. Quick reviews with cast information. Other books have come and gone but Maltin remains. I purchased the oversized edition for the larger type. I find the book helpful for films that look interesting but that I have never heard of. This book avoids time wasters--or if you prefer, allows you to know that the film is a time waster. More concise and informative than Roger Ebert's book.

Of historical interest.......2007-05-21
This is the first edition and as such is probably more of interest to someone who owns and knows the later, revised, larger edition. A snapshot of a 'work-in-progress'.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting stories and anecdotes, but that's it.......2006-08-01
First off, this book is over 20 years old. This is a repackaging and as far as I can tell, there isn't any new material. In other words, there is zero mention of the poker stars of today. You'll probably only recognize one other character in his book (Amarillo Slim). If you don't mind that, then keep reading...
This book is a collection of articles that Doyle wrote about his early days playing poker in Texas. There are some funny and interesting stories about himself and some of the wacky people he met playing poker. There isn't a whole lot of poker wisdom. There are a few moral-of-the-story type lines, but not many. Also, if you're buying this book to learn about poker strategy, don't. There isn't much at all. You're much better off with Phil Gordon's Little Green Book.
So for interesting anecdotes from a poker great, this book is good. But there isn't much else to it.
Just like Doyle, one of the best.......2005-12-06
I really enjoyed this book. What makes it different from other books is that with stratrgical books, you need to have your brain on, but with this, you can just sit back, relax, and read the stories of the Godfather of Poker.
A must for any poker fanatic
Oh, of course........2005-08-22
A clear, practical guide which helps the reader with many complex issues. My initial response was, "Oh, of course." because these truths seem obvious. But discovering them the hard way could prove expensive. A valuable acquisition to any library.
Nice Read.......2005-01-13
A very interesting, quick read. Mostly a collection of articles Doyle has written over the years for various publications. The book delivers advice, but is not really a strategy guide. Some interesting stories from one of the all-time greats.
Simply the Best .......2004-11-23
I've read at least a half dozen of the top poker theory books, and I learned more from this one book than from all of the others. The wisdom Brunson espouses in this book is simple, yet it is so profound that it will change the way you view yourself and your opponents at the poker table.
The book is mainly a collection of articles Brunson has written over the years for various poker magazines. However, each one contains nuggest of poker genius (mostly related to No Limit Texas Hold 'Em)in plain simple English that authors like Sklansky and Malmuth have complicated with mathematical theories. Brunson is a simple man and he tells simple stories. The bottom line: poker is a game of people and if you understand the people you play with, then your decision making process is simplifed. The cards are secondary (although he does admit that with the influx of new players in the last few years, even he has to have good hands to make a move!). Even if you don't appreciate his wisdom, the stories he tells about the Texas roadgames of yesteryear are worth the purchase price. Somebody needs to make a movie of this guy's life!

Buy it.......2007-10-08
What an incredible book. A real page turner. An honest and personal account of the shuttle program.
Simply Outstanding - Wonderful Read!.......2007-10-06
This was an amazing book! Extremely entertaining from start to finish. An honest, in-depth account of the early space shuttle program is overdue and Mike created just that. With 3 flights under his belt, Mike is more than qualifed to tell this story. I highly recommend this book.
Riding Rockets Rocks.......2007-08-31
This not the normal book about space adventure; it tells the real story with true humor. Enjoy!
A true inside look at the STS program.......2007-08-11
WOW!!!!!!!!!! Want to know what it's really like to be inside the Shuttle astronaut program... this is your book!! Col. Mullane gives us a true inside feel for what it's like to be an STS astronaut. Hardly a page went by that I didn't laugh out loud!! Oh dear... I also found out that I too am from Plant AD!!
Riding Rockets takes you on an incredible journey!.......2007-06-29
Your blood pressure will boil as you read Mike's detailed descriptions on his three Space Shuttle assignments. There is so much more, however, and all of his stories from beginning to end are simply amazing, funny, witty, and tear-jerking. A boring page does not exist and you'll be sad when you realize you've read the last page.
Book Description
The bombardment by Confederate artillery of Fort Sumter on 12 April 1861 was the spark that finally ignited the American Civil War, quickly bringing thousands of eager volunteers for the Union cause. It proved especially easy to raise cavalry, since recruits naively believed that their military duties would be easier than in the infantry. This book investigates all aspects of the life and experiences of a Union trooper, covering enlistment, training, uniforms, weapons, cavalry tactics and the discrepancy between the recruit's view of swashbuckling charges and heroic hand-to-hand combat and the less glorious reality.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyed the book.......2005-09-16
I bought the book because my Great Grandfather was a trooper in the 2nd Iowa Cavalry (mentioned in the book) and I am doing research on him. This book gave me a good idea as to conditions, uniforms and weapons. Also provided a lot of information on camps and training you don't get in books with a strictly "history" presentation on battles, commanders, etc.
If you are interested in the (Union) Civil War Cavalry get this book.
Great Guide for Living Historians.......2002-01-20
Although not intended specifically for living history, this is an excellent work for the American Civil War Re-enactor who is getting started and wishes to strive for historical accuracy in a cavalry role. The period pictures and accounts show all types of uniforms, weapons, gear and procedures that a new cavalryman would need to know. The book also makes good contrasts between different gear at different stages in the war, so you can illustrate the difference between a volunteer in 1861 vice a regular in 1865. At first, I wasn't sure if the gear I had purchased from a sutler was correct, but after seeing this book, I now know that it was, and exactly how to wear and use it.
It is also a good read for the general history buff, with many good color paintings mixed in with period B&W photos.

From the sight-lines of the university setting, Shelby Steele gives an account of race that is nothing if not controversial. Steele's nine essays derive their messages from personal experience dosed with broader social psychology. The value of this book, which won a 1990 National Book Critics Circle Award, lies in its introspection, rather than its distant calculation. Steele weeds the individual out of the group and argues for personal responsibility. He offers a unique look at the African-American experience and points a questioning finger at the children of affirmative action. The knee-jerk identification he observes "presupposes a deep racist reflex in American life that will forever try to limit black possibility."
Book Description
In this controversial essay collection, award-winning writer Shelby Stelle illuminates the origins of the current conflict in race relations--the increase in anger, mistrust, and even violence between black and whites. With candor and persuasive argument, he shows us how both black and white Americans have become trapped into seeing color before character, and how social policies designed to lessen racial inequities have instead increased them. The Content of Our Character is neither "liberal" nor "conservative," but an honest, courageous look at America's most enduring and wrenching social dilemma.
Customer Reviews:
Emerging and intelligent race relations.......2006-06-26
Finally, we are making intelligent decisions about race relations and civil rights and moving away from the problems created by white guilt and "black power" agendas during the early civil rights movement. The author is very intelligent and makes valid observations and written commentary on where we have been and on a pathway to a society that makes more sense than ever before. Jim Moore
The Truth unmasked.......2006-02-28
In a nutshell, this is one of many books written on this subject matter. It is a very good book, Mr Steele ocaisionally glosses over a bit of the subject matter. There is a need for much more of self examination, and this will allow us to define ourselves as Americans far better than those that have decided to race bait and perform the victim routine that seems to be so popular amongst many people of color. A couple of very wealthy black men have created a growth industry from it. We need the self examination that this book touches on, not the self hatred that some vocal minority within this minority are preaching.
Great Psychological and Spiritual Insight.......2004-08-10
Shelby Steele's "The Content of Our Character" is not just a book for African-Americans. It's for anyone who wants to live a better life. When I read this book I felt like he was speaking to me, individually, as a man and not as a member of a racial category. Especially valuable are his insights on self-sabotage, and the true sources of self-esteem. All of us have our own demons to face and Steele's wise counsel is invaluable in that struggle. You should approach this book in the spirit of Epictetus, or Benjamin Franklin. It really is in that same class.
Strong Opinion.......2002-11-18
In the book, The Content of Our Character,Shelby Steele expresse very strong views about racism in the black community. He, at times, has valid responses to some of the problems that America faces with racism, but some of his opinions(keyword opinion)comes of very strong and seems unsympathetic to some of the struggles that African-Americans have faced in the past as well as the present.
While I hope he may be sensitive to the hardships hardships that have fallen upon the black race, I think his basic point of the book is that although blacks have been victims of racism for decades, there is no sense in "milking the cow" for more reasons to fall as victims to racism. There are situations that African-Americans can change in their own lives to keep from being pulled into negative stereotypes. For example,in one of his arguments he states that there are blacks who complain of living in poverty and that its the "white man's" fault. He says there are things that you can do to change that situation such as going for a higher education and actually apllying yourself to achieve that goal. As with anything in life there will be sacrifices made and that something you have to do. Meaning you can place the blame on anyone or anything why your life is the
way it is but what are you going to do to change it? No one can hold anyone back from achieving anything. He defends most of his arguements this way-- by offering "suggestions" on how not to fall to being a victim of racism, at least in your own eyes because you are doing all that you can do to try your best to improve your life(if improvement is needed). He's stating racism is not the sole problem fore African-Americans, some just use racism as a crutch to make an excuse about why their not getting ahead in life.
But at a different point of view, it seems for a second he for a second he forgot he is a black man. He stated that he felt nostalgia when in black neighborhoods( but as I stated offers suggestions on how not to fall as a victim to racism and stereotypes) and he stated that while at a party he felt ok for a moment by making whites who were at the party feel guilty about struggles(even though he stated that those African-Americans who use racism as a crutch and shouldn't) and he's married to a white woman. How did she feel knowing he at one time was ok with that? His opinions are very strong and can be taking the wrong way. I feel as if he is very opiniated and at times unsympathetic to the hardships. I would recommend this book to read, just keep your own opinions at heart and remember there just opinions.
The Road Less Travelled.......2002-11-11
This tome by Shelby Steele was written slightly over a decade ago. However, the problems of race and class that defined much of the black experience in America at the time of its writing still hold for today. And, while I agree with Steele's general assessment of the state of black America, and especially with the solutions he outlines, I do agree somewhat with his critics, black or otherwise, who believes Steele tends to underplay the current levels of racism in our society.
However, here's the rub: Racism can be an excuse to fail, or a reason to improve one's lot to the extent that blacks are empowered to make racism less relevant to their individual and collective destiny. For what Steele is proposing is a return to the proud ethic first elaborated upon by such civil rights pioneers as Booker T. Washington and Marcus Garvey.
I give this excellent book four stars instead of five for the following reasons: 1). As it was compiled mainly from magazine articles previously written by Steele, it is a bit repetetive, and; 2). Steele draws quite a bit on history of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s, but I believe that by tracing many of our societal trends to the turn-of-the-century competing visions of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois, this would have been a more well-rounded book.
