Book Description
Teenage vampire Alex Elder returns in this second Crimson collection. Alex is struggling to accept his vampiric fate, and vows never to kill a human being in his blood-thirst. He is also caught up in a battle between the forces of vampirism and the beautiful but deadly Scarlet X, member of the Red Hood, a secret organization dedicated to wiping out supernatural beings.
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Alex Elder is still a young vampire that is not too keen on being a vampire, he has enough problems with all the teenager things, hormones, etc., without having to have vampire super powers, a want to be girlfriend that is a literal killer, angels, monsters and all sorts of other problems to deal with.
You find out the backstory of the Red Hood bunch here.
This is proof its good!.......2002-06-06
I got my great grandma to read this AND Enjoy it! 80 years old and willingly reading a comic (a gory one at that)! What else to say besides that this just dives deeper into the Crimson plot and reveals secrets about Alex's "Chosen One" buisnes, and my favorite part of the book: Explanations on The Order of the Red Hood!
Pretty good, but..........2002-03-18
I've read all Crimson TPB's. Brian Augustyn's script is getting better as the story unfolds, and guys who do computer coloring are really great. As for the pencils, Humberto Ramos draws very well (his style resembles that of Greg Capullo), but I find his habit of rendering over-elongated figures with small face, big hands and enormous feet quite irritating. I respect his style, every comic artist distorts or emphasizes some features on his figures, but this is tad too much...If it wasn't for this, I would give this comic four stars.
The plot thickens.......2001-07-21
This is truly a (good) continuation of the first Crimson TPB ("Loyalty & Loss"). If you haven't read that get it first, or don't bother at all. Things won't make sense. This book (which collects #7-12 and the "Dynamic Forces Premiere" issue) starts off with sort of an interlude issue. In it Alex meets the 'Heavenly Host', also known as the group of archangels who do the Lords' bidding. They've come down to judge wether Alex should be allowed to live on (being a vampire and all) or that he has to be terminated. Help comes from a rather unexpected/surprising side. This is really the most fun issue of the trade where the cliches about angels' manners are shattered and some sick humor is going on. After that the main story goes on it's way again and I really would like to lable this book 'the clearification-TPB' because after we first met a lot of the main-players in the first TPB, here is much explanation about the legacy's, past deeds and motives of each of them (like Lisseth, Ekimus, Scarlet X, streetcop George etc.). That AND we are told the origin of the 'Clan of the Red Hood'. All this explaning luckily happens during the story (so it's not a collection of facts like in the beginning of th first issues) in which a lot of different parties of interest are after Alex for different reasons. Some good, some bad. It all leads to some pretty heavy confrontations and some beings show to have a great power potential (like Ekimus).
Like I said in the beginning, you should realize when you buy this book that it's really a must to first read the volume 1 book to make any sense of it. It's one big "going deeper into already introduced characters" and it won't make sense if you just dive in it without knowing what's gone before. To first buy the other volume won't be a waste of money though because it's at least as good as this one. For the people who HAVE already read the first volume, you should know that the story is a lot more serious and violent (as in "big-gun-violent" not so much gory) than in the first trade and now the focus is really more on the plot than on punchlines, which it has but a few. It doesn't take anything away from the fun though and if you liked the first TPB this one won't let you down.
Refreshing Reluctant Vampire Tales.......2000-09-03
Having picked this book up by sheer accident, I've become intrigued and involved in the storylines and rich background of this series. No only is the art top notch and the story compelling, Alex Elder is a lovable, friendly Vampire with some fun and sometimes scary friends, as well as diabolical enemies. I've not enjoyed a graphic novel as good as this one before. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a taste for a downtrodden hero.
Book Description
Winner of the 2005 Sundance Film Festival Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award and the 2005 Sundance Film Festival Dramatic Directing Award, a tender, funny, and ultimately moving coming-of-age story, starring Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney.
Set in Brooklyn in 1986, The Squid and the Whale captures with extraordinary immediacy the inner workings of the Berkman family. Bernard (Jeff Daniels), a once successful novelist, and his wife Joan (Laura Linney), an up-and-coming writer, have given up on their marriage. Their two sons Walt (Jesse Eisenberg), 16, and Frank (Owen Kline), 12, are left to grapple with their confusing and conflicted feelings.
The experience is a tender, funny, and ultimately moving coming-of-age for Walt and a tortuously premature one for Frank. The emotional tensions and strains that emerge during this difficult period for the Berkmans are given a remarkably subtle and nuanced portrayal. This is a film that deftly presents the realties of a family in transition learning to redefine itself.
In the acclaimed Newmarket Shooting Script format, this book includes the film's award-winning screenplay, an introduction by writer/director Noah Baumbach, Q&A, scene notes, movie stills, and complete cast and crew credits. 28 color photos.
Customer Reviews:
Simple.......2005-12-15
The simplistic sytle which Baumbach delivers the plot and dialouge is unmatched to others in many respects. It is a very quick read.

Excellent textbook..........2006-09-29
...comprehensive, detailed but nevertheless succinct and to the point...the writing is a bit dry but after all it is a textbook.
An excellent linear approach to common-practice harmony.......2005-04-02
This book is best for those who have already taken a full course in tonal harmony and understand it well from a functional perspective but want to understand it better from a linear perspective.
It is a very complete course in common practice tonal harmony. It is in many ways an updated successor to Aldwell & Schachter in that it pays attention to every minute detail of voice leading and part-writing. Varieties of V-I take over 100 pages alone. For those interesting in mastering the common practice writing style, this is much better than, for example Benward or Piston, which focus more on the functional aspects of harmony, but neglect the linear. If you have this, W. A. Mathieu's Harmonic Experience, Bert Ligon's Jazz Theory text, and Ludmila Udmela's text on contemporary harmony you have 90% of what you need to know about tonal harmony.
Who is this book not for? It is not for those interested in learning harmony in Jazz, Pop, or 20th century styles. Also, the title "Complete Musician" is a misonomer. It is only common-practice harmony.
This book requires a solid foundation of the basics of music theory to absorb--I can imagine it being very confusing if used for unprepared college freshmen, because it doesn't spend much time on fundamentals.
Book Description
Tournament poker is different from standard ring game poker. From a distance, it may look like a typical poker game, but there are many factors that can lead to proper strategy that is very different than what most players, (including good poker players), are familiar with.
Yet some people excel at tournament poker. This is not luck. These are players who have a good understanding of what the proper strategy adjustments are, and when they come into play. It is not a coincidence that the same players make it to the final table far more than their fair share.
This text is the first book ever written that explains tournament strategies which only a small number of players have mastered. It assumes you already know how to play poker well, but aren't knowledgeable of tournament concepts and when and where to use them. Some of the ideas discussed include the effect of going broke, The Gap Concept, how chips change value, adjusting strategy because the stakes rise, all-in strategy, the last table, making deals, The "System," and much more.
Customer Reviews:
average.......2007-08-05
This book is kinda average. It has 1 or 2 useful principles like 1) be more willing to bet but less willing to call later in tournaments, and 2) adjust the value of your chips based on how they'll translate into actual $$.
Other than that i thought it was a lot of fluff.
For Tournament Players Only..........2007-01-31
Extremely instructive if you plan on playing tournaments. Note that it covers all forms of poker, not just Hold'em, Omaha, or Stud.
nrm.......2007-01-19
I found myself thiking this could have been so much better.
Sklansky is no doubt the master when it comes to breaking down expert concepts into easily digestible form. His theory of poker and Holdem for Advanced players are absolute must reads. Even the great Harrington relies very heavily on Sklansky concepts in his 3 part series.
However Sklansky really hasn't taken it to the next level in this book like he has in some previous offerings. He highlights some fundamentally important concepts in tournament poker, particularly the gap concept, but then fails to take it further by showing the reader what to do with his new found knowledge.
If your serious about playing tournaments, of course you have to read any offering than Sklansky makes on the subject. But don't expect too much help in applying the concepts he descibes. You'll have to rely on Harrington for that.
No Luck.......2007-01-10
I haven't received it yet and have been trying to email Amazon with no luck, It was sent on 3rd Dec to Australia
They promised to deliver by the 22 Dec if I bought before 4th Dec so I don't think I will ever buy a book from Amazon again. No book no review
Read everything you can!.......2007-01-04
Whatever information you can get will improve your game. It's great to have this resource available when so many books are geared toward the more inexperienced players.

The Pocket Pediatrician has taken the place in our home previously held by the popular Dr. Spock. My wife and I find the presentation clear and helpful. What emerges from the pages of the Pocket Pediatrician is a warm bedside manner that is calming and reassuring.

Book Description
In World War II the Panzer crews spearheaded every major campaign or battle from the invasions of Poland and France to the last great counter-offensive in the Ardennes. Germany's Panzer crews fought on every front and along the way earned a formidable reputation for élan in attack and steadfastness in defence. This book charts the recruitment, training, service conditions and combat experience of a typical World War II German tank crewman, serving on various fronts - from the scorching heat of the Western Desert to the frozen tundra of the Eastern Front. It features many unpublished photographs from both private collectors and Panzer veterans themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Good Introductory Volume.......2004-09-04
Not a bad volume by any means, but nothing extremely new, and hints at an ongoing unhealthy trend in the Osprey line.
Sixty-four pages with colour plates. Very well written. Williamson is no stranger to German military subjects, though most of his works seem to deal in general, broad strokes - see his INFANTRY ACES OF THE THIRD REICH for example. Some good (secondary) research has been done - more on this later, however.
Colour plates - very well done. Vuksic needs to work on his human faces, but he major depictions of vehicles and equipment and uniforms are above average. Minor research error in plate G; the NCO is depicted wearing gold or yellow metal cyphers and stars on the shoulder straps; these should naturally be silver or white metal. However, compare to the excellent use of colour in, for example, the jackboot in plate A - Vuksic approaches photo-realistic quality in many of his depictions. The vignettes were effective also, especially the final one with the bailed out tank crew.
The text focusses on several major topics; again, there is little new covered here though some nuggets may be of value to panzer buffs. The geographical recruitment table was to me a nice touch, eithers may view it as a waste of space. The space devoted to "elite" panzer units seemed like a waste given that some were not mentioned at all (Panzer Lehr for example!), and other notables like 24 Panzer Division (nee 1 Kavallerie Division) are not mentioned either. Also a tendency to muddle designations and use only late war - for example the anti-tank units were known as panzerabwehr einheiten early in the war, and did not become panzerjäger until much later; this is not hinted at. So those looking for proper designations will not find this book helpful.
What the book does do is cover in broad strokes the basics of how a German panzer soldier was inducted, trained, what basic tactics and crew positions he was taught, with some brief history of units, vehicles, and campaigns. Uniforms are discussed in some detail, but not nearly enough - for example the date of discontinuation of the pink collar piping is not mentioned in the captions for plate A. A partial list of branches that wore the black uniform is provided, but this too is incomplete and covered in far more detail by Edwards in the FIELD UNIFORMS OF GERMAN ARMY PANZER FORCES IN WORLD WAR 2.
Which brings us to the disturbing trend in Osprey books. Edwards seems to have been a source for the branch information (the book is not listed in the bibliography, incidentally). Much more research than previous, speaking in general terms of Osprey books, not just this one in particular, seems to be done through secondary sources. The panzer-propaganda units are mentioned prominently in Edwards' book, for example - the first mention in print I've seen of them. Williamson has dutifully, it appears, made use of this secondary information to pass on in his own book. Note also the anecodatal story of the SS man captured by Polish troops on page 55, which is the sole basis for an entire section devoted to the No Quarter treatment of tank crews. Williamson has interviewed many veterans and so much of the "secondary" material here is no doubt confirmed by his interviews during his long career, but one wonders how much of each is present.
Fans of Barkmann and Wittmann, the panzer experts, will appreciate the extensive coverage of these two figures, with photos from Herr Barkmann's personal collection. Unfortunately, no Army figures are given similar treatment.
Williamson does cover some good ground; for an introduction to tank crews - which is all the book claims to be - it will be money well spent. Might have benefitted from a more consistent focus; more attention paid to getting the uniform information better presented (this is done much better in Osprey's own THE PANZER DIVISIONS), perhaps stayed away from quite so many Waffen SS stories and anecdotes in favour of more primary research.
Overall good, and the colour plates add tremendously to this. Williamson is a solid writer and writes in a colloquial, anecdotal style. This should not be offputting to the majority of interested parties buying this book.
Book Description
Today, some 80 nations can be described as fully democratic. Yet in numerous countries around the world, democracy has failed or is tottering, and in the United States its principles are increasingly under siege from corporate and other forces.
In What Would Jefferson Do? Thom Hartmann shows why democracy is not an aberration in human history but the oldest, most resilient, and most universal form of government, with roots in nature itself. He traces the history of democracy in the United States, identifies the most prevalent myths about it, and offers an inspiring yet realistic plan for transforming the political landscape and reviving Jefferson’s dream before it is too late.

THOM HARTMANN is the host of a nationally syndicated radio show, The Thom Hartmann Program, and the award-winning
author of fourteen books. He lives in Montpelier, Vermont, and can be found on the Internet at www.thomhartmann.com.

Customer Reviews:
A Clear point of View.......2007-09-25
It is not often that someone presents what appears to be a contrasting point of view (to what is common today) and then ACTUALLY HONESTLY, LOGICALLY, AND HISTORICALLY suports that position. This book does, it is a quick easy read and very informative. When finished, one would say, the author makes sense, and more should listen. After checking, Hartmann's data is factual and a realitively correct interpretation rather than snipits carefully chosen and not represenative of what Jefferson really intended. All citizens who are concerned with the politics of the day should read the book to get a different perspective, and understanding of what the founding fathers really said and wanted.
revere rides again.......2007-06-13
I'm a democratically elected union steward who maintains worker rights for no pay...I battle the "east india company" on a daily basis...books like yours give me hope that common sense is not dead. the tyrannical bottom line will not take our humanity nor our rights! I ask only that we forget not to be humane! The signatories of the declaration of independence were compelled by what was right and moral...and so we must be no matter how insignificant we deem ! I thank all the readers who care enough to increase their capacity to understand our founding principles! Bravo Thom !
Required Reading for New Citizens.......2007-04-07
Although I remember learning about the ideals of American's founders when I was in elementary school, it seems that children are no longer learning what Thom Hartmann so perfectly conveys in his book. This book should be required reading for every new citizen and for every new voter (as well as for a few million voters who seem to have forgotten what they learned in school).
interesting but not what i expected.......2007-01-10
expected more on jefferson but was mostly on his relationship with current mystics. still a good read.
Great easy reading lesson in democracy.......2006-11-04
We all should renew our history and realize not to take our democracy for granted. This is the book to get started!

Book Description
This is the first site-specific birding book written especially for the casual or novice birder. It is a fully illustrated look at more than 60 top birding sites on O`ahu, Kaua`i, the Big Island, Maui, Moloka`i, and Lanai. Every spot described offers something special--forest-dwelling birds unique to Hawai`i, seabirds that rarely visit the shore, or introduced birds found in city parks and gardens.
Birds of greatest interest and those most likely to be seen at each site are given particular attention, with information on seasonal occurrences to help visitors plan their birding trips. Site descriptions note activities and nearby points of interest, detailed directions to the sites, and available facilities for visitors. Helpful occurrence tables show at a glance where common and uncommon birds can be found. General information on birding in Hawai`i, a description of the processes that led to extensive speciation, and a review of the threats against Hawaiian birdlife are included.
Customer Reviews:
Not for strangers in paradise.......2003-03-10
Before our first visit to Hawaii I searched to find something that would serve as a useful guide for a trip that would permit only casual bird-watching. This book is really best for someone able to dedicate time to exploring the recommended hikes. Having said that, my main complaint about the book is that the illustrations are of little use to someone from the North American continent who is unfamiliar with Hawaii's birds, as the majority of readers probably are. After all, which would be more useful, good color photos of Northern Cardinals, or a photo of the 'Apapane? A photo of a Black-crowned Night Heron, or a photo of the 'I'iwi? The Birdwatchers Guide has very good photos of a male and a female cardinal and the heron, which are close to ubiquitous in the mainland USA, and none of the latter, which are totally unfamiliar to mainlanders. There are lots of black and white photos of things like people looking through binoculars, road signs, and trails, none of which are terribly useful to birdwatchers trying to ID unfamiliar species...
Useful and interesting.......1999-07-11
Rick Soehren knows Hawai'i and its birds, and this site guide is a great help to visitors. Soehren describes, island by island, where to find Hawai'i's birds, and in the process gives the reader some of Hawai'i's avian history. The book is illustrated with good black-and-white photographs. I have used the book on Hawai'i and Kaua'i and have found it clear, accurate, and very useful.
A must for birding in Hawaii!.......1998-07-27
This is not a field guide with pictures to help you identify the birds. It is a wonderfully insightful reference to the diversity of birds that may be found within the state of Hawaii. It is far more than just a birdwatching guide. It gives one a feel for the plight of the native Hawaiian birds and the beauty of the state and its avifauna.
