Book Description
Nowhere is the visual cornucopia of street graphics more striking than in India, where a continuous gallery of images reflects the country's rich cultural diversity. From the Arabian Sea to the Indian Ocean, from the northern Himalayas to its southernmost tip, the subcontinent's overwhelming profusion of art and design excites the eyes. Street furniture, architecture, transport, billboards, posters, packaging, animals, and people are all used as the media of calculated design and spontaneous expression. Ancient or modern, permanent or transient, India's street art has evolved in a myriad of styles reflecting regional variation and concerns. Barry Dawson's photographs are not only a colorful journey through India's cities, towns, and villages, but also a graphic celebration of its creative street culture, an inspirational sourcebook of vibrant ideas for students and practitioners of art and design, as well as a lively visual record for visitors. 154 color photographs.

Reinforces stereotypical image of India.Book not recommended.......2002-10-11
India is a colorful country. A myriad of colors can be seen in the clothes people wear, product packaging, architecture, designs on vehicles and many other places. This book purports to have captured the essence of Indian advertising but ends up shocking the reader, even those who have lived in that country all their lives. It is true that the advertising there comprises of large billboards, generous use of colors and use of every available inch of space. It is indeed more colorful than anyone in west would have ever seen or imagined. That being said, it should also be pointed out that the garish advertisements pictured in the book are seen more in the southern part of India and are not representative of the entire country. The author seems to have concentrated his picks on certain regions, selected the gaudiest images he could find and ignored the tasteful advertisements that now dot the Indian landscape. Every country has its pros and cons. Selectivity of the author tends to strengthen the stereotypical image of India as a rural third-world country. To be fair to the author, his book does highlight the individuality and skills of the artists but even that would not encourage recommendation of this book. Whether you are an Indian or someone looking to visit India, money spent on this ugly book would be well spent somewhere else. Artists and art students may want to thumb through the book. Not recommended for other folks.
Fascinating.......2001-07-30
This book is fascinating on several levels. As a photography book of the street advertising in India; great photos of the very colourful and strange ads found there. As a graphic design book; creative inspiration for advertising in ways not done here in the U.S., using materials and styles we don't see here. As an insight into Indian culutre; symbols, colours, methods that make sense to them, seem wonderful and exotic to us. Keep this handy as the kind of picture book you like to look through occasionally; it is fascinating, creative, inspriational, and a good buy for the price.
Very enjoyable trip.......2001-07-22
This book really conveys a feeling of what it is like traveling through India. For me, is really allowed me to reminisce about my trips with my parents to Madras. I can't think of a better book that gives the feel of what traveling through India is like. The colors and creativity are really special. I think this book makes a great gift and coffee table reading.
Fantastic StreetGraphics from India !!!!! (- 5x dope).......2000-09-05
This is realy the best and also the-one-and-only book that i know of this kind of ("ugly":) graphic designs. I have been in India and also in Africa and you see this beautiful -mostly by hand painted- grafic designs everywhere !!! I realy LOVE IT ! The letters and figures are mostly out of proportions, but just that makes it so beautifull ! In this book there are a lott of photo's from the very big Bollywood signboards/posters to the little packaging-designs. There are also religious motifs and and politic symbols in this book. If you also like graphic design that is not produced by the Mac, than you MUST have this one !!! If somebody know more grapicdesign-books like this (from Africa or Indonesia or South America, MAIL ME ! echt@casema.net - Thanx, Johan Manschot (Holland)

An amazing Screenwriter with gifts unimaginable........2006-12-22
If you have ever seen any Charlie Kaufman films, you have learned to either love him right away or hate him. I love him. My particular favorite is "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". Filled with a powerful meaning and incredible storylines (main and side), this is sure to have you page turning all the way to the end without stopping.
Someone who is in my opinion, a step above Hollywood, and a true pleasure for all of us to read.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but not all that insightful........2006-05-02
I found this book to be interesting, but not all that insightful. It is written for a beginner or someone who is completely new to the field of board game design. On the other hand, if that is you, you'll find this to be quite helpful.
Okay for general interest........2004-11-16
"The Game Inventor's Guidebook" is a bit of a misleading title as there's very little here to guide an aspiring inventor in getting into the industry beyond the obvious advice to get a broker if you want a shot at penetrating the big companies; and don't sink your life savings into producing a game yourself thinking you're going to strike it rich. Tinsman has put together a respectable, if somewhat lightweight, overview of the industry with brief glimpses at the backstories of some of the more successful games and their inventors that's most appropriate for the gaming aficionado.
NOTE: If you're interested in video game design, look elsewhere.
Informative Look at Toy & Game Inventing.......2004-03-12
As a professional toy inventor and manufacturer, I found this book to be right on target. It gives both current and prospective inventors critical the type of ammunition needed to succeed in this highly competitive, extremely speculative business. I wish that I'd read this book when I started out fourteen years ago. Even now I found it helpful to be reminded of some of the basic precepts and underlying structure of the biz.
This book is a must have for any aspiring game designer........2003-08-09
Anyone who is trying to design a game or get one published should buy this book.
It covers success stories of popular games such as Magic and Trivial Pursuit and gives advice on all aspects of creating and selling your game.
This includes finding a publisher or publishing a game yourself and deatils on a variety of game companies.
It is well designed and easy to read.
This book is a time-saver.......2003-07-17
For those of us who have a game idea that we'd like to have published, this book will save you months of trial-and-error learning about game publishing and the game market.
The book helped me realize that Hasbro isn't the only game publisher and Toys R Us isn't the only game retailer. I especially enjoyed the anecdotes from game designers and publishers.
In addition, the book provided me with the confidence and knowledge to approach publishers with my game design.
Book Description
Karenna Gore Schiff's nationally bestselling narrative tells the fascinating stories of nine influential women, who each in her own way, tackled inequity and advocated change throughout the turbulent twentieth century.Ida B. Wells-Barnett, who was born a slave and fought against lynching; Mother Jones, an Irish immigrant who organized coal miners and campaigned against child labor; Alice Hamilton, who pushed for regulation of industrial toxins; Frances Perkins, who developed key New Deal legislation; Virginia Durr, who fought the poll tax and segregation; Septima Clark, who helped to register black voters; Dolores Huerta, who organized farm workers; Dr. Helen Rodriguez-Trias, an activist for reproductive rights; and Gretchen Buchenholz, one of the nation's leading child advocates.Gore Schiff delivers an intimate and accessible account of the nine trail-blazing women who deserve not only to be honored but to have their example serve as beacons.

Lighting The Way: Nine Women Who Changed Modern America.......2007-08-03
This is a magnificent book, written by a brilliant and humanitarian author. It is well researched and documented, and it is very interesting and enlightening. Every person in our nation could benefit from reading this informative work. Thank you for this book!
Extraordinary women.......2006-11-10
Karenna Gore Schiff has done us a wonderful service with this book of women whose impact on American life has been profound. Her essays on the lives and contributions of these women are readable and enlightening. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them.
Excellent book.......2006-08-20
This is a beautifully written and captivating look at the lives of strong women who helped change the course of American history. I was extremely impressed by Karenna Gore Schiff's writing ability . All of the women profiled in this book are fascinating Americans and most of them are long overdue for this kind of a tribute. Schiff truly did her research and I was also interested in the information she shared about the strong women in her family--most notably her grandmothers. She dedicates the book to them.
I am disappointed!!!.......2006-04-06
Any college student can write a book as this-- I'd rather read an Encyclopedia!!!
Lighting the Way: Nine Women who Changed Modern America.......2006-03-17
I read about this book in the newspaper and bought it immediately as a birthday present for my daughter. When it came I started to read it and liked it very much. I didn't want to read the whole thing because I think it needed to be brand new for a gift.

Book Description
HOW THE LUFTWAFFE FIGHTER ACES ACHIEVED THEIR SUCCESS
The Luftwaffe's leading fighter aces outscored their Allied counterparts astonishingly during World War II--so much so that when the records of these pilots (the Jagdflieger) first became available after the war they were greeted with disbelief. A single ace with a hundred victories might have been credible, but one hundred six aces each recorded one hundred victories or more, and the top scorer claimed three hundred fifty-two. However, postwar research proved that German shoot-down confirmations were given only after rigorous checking.
To discover the secret of the Luftwaffe pilots' success, aviation historian Mike Spick examines the exploits of Nazi Germany's most famous pilots, focusing on the methods and tactics of individual aces, examining the importance of machinery, training, climate, numbers, and theater of war, and using firsthand accounts to put the reader in the pilot's seat. This book is easily the best possible guide to how the German aces achieved such amazing results in battle.
Customer Reviews:
Good book with lots of information.......2007-05-22
As a fan of war history, specially aviation, I liked the book and information presented. Would recommended it.
I hated this book........2007-01-09
I really hated this book.In two different stints as a member of the Military Book Club it is the only book I ever sent back.
Good book, but..........2007-01-05
It is a very good book. I learned some interesting things, but I guess the subject is more deep. I found the book a little incomplete.
Informative and enjoyable.......2005-02-07
Excellent and detailed account of the Jagdflieger aces and the war which they fought in the skies over Europe. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about this incredible TRUE story.
ok book on the luftwaffe.......2003-06-17
I read this book a number of years ago. It gives a very general description of the jagdflieger in world war two. I re-read this book because I recently became interested in ww2 flight simulators. I was trying to gain some tactical insight. While the book does provide some insight, it falls short in this regard. Though a well reseached work with personal interviews from the legendary german aces: Hartmann, Rall ect. It does not break any new ground.
Customer Reviews:
Seems plausible, but..........2007-08-03
I don't know. This book was written in 1970. From what I can gather, the thesis of the book is this: There are a handful of wealthy families that are controlling the world. They lend money to governments of nations, and when the governments can't pay the money back, the governments become their [...] out of fear of attack from another funded (Paying) country. Furthermore, communism is the tool that carries out the plan. Communism, allegedly an "uprising of the people", is really a carefully orchestrated scheme of the super wealthy elite meant to funnell even more wealth (And thus, power) upward (Even more so than capitalism) until the entire world is unified under one hand. Wow. That's deep. The only thing is, if that's really what was happening, how do explain the fall of communism? You know, the wall in Germany? The crumbling of the Soviet Union? Maybe the plan now is to disguise communism as capitalism so we won't notice. The scary thing is, a lot in this book is probably 100% dead on accurate. The Golden Rule: Whoever has the gold makes the rules. Hasn't it always been that way? That's not really a conspiracy, it's just human nature. People are greedy. They always want more. And yes, the federal reserve is a private institution, not a federal one. I guess my point is, you could sit back and postulate about every damn thing and to some degree make a point that it is connected with a conspiracy. That don't neccesarily make it so. Remember the Roman Empire? With all its wealth and power, it eventually crumbled. As will any that follows. Not a conspiracy. Just the way it is. My advice: Play with your dog. Watch Family Guy. Lighten up.
Interesting take on Communisim.......2007-07-08
Very interesting for it's time, a time when communism was a big threat to the western world. Gives some great reasons why things run as they do. Like why would the international bankers of europe finance its own eventual demise. Shows that communism like all other political movements are ultimately just con games for the powers that be to keep power over the vast hordes of human chattle.
None Dare Call It Conspiracy by Gary Allen.......2007-05-30
Book is very informative and if all Americans would read it, we, as a country as a whole, would have a much better understanding of what is REALLY going on in this world. This book was published in 1976 and everything in it is true today.
Food For Thought--Whether or Not One Agrees With Conspiracy Theories.......2007-02-06
I first read this book soon after it came out, when I was in high school. I recall how it made me think about many things in unconventional ways. For example, Allen moved beyond what he called the "Gus Hall level of Communism" and challenged his readers to see Communism as merely one tool of a much wider conspiracy to rule the world. And, whether or not one accepts the latter premise or not, one can still pause to wonder why the Rockefellers were giving money to the Soviet Union, whose avowed goal had been to destroy capitalism. At very least, Allen's book can create pressure on American corporations not to finance America's enemies.
Without this book, who would have heard of the Bilderberg movement? And, even if they are not a secret, one-world movement, one still wonders why such powerful people meet regularly in secrecy. If the Bilderbergers are really benign, as they claim, it is still worthwhile for the public to monitor them in order to see to it that they stay that way.
Allen has been accused of anti-Semitism. Yet those who have actually read this book realize that Allen specifically and forcefully repudiates the premise that the conspiracy was or is predominantly Jewish.
In addition, Allen has been accused of numerous inaccuracies in his book. To add another possible one: Allen claims that Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands was a member of the Nazi SS, where he "had a lot of fun". While Bernhard was indeed at least a nominal member of the SS, where is the evidence that Bernhard himself was involved in Nazi atrocities?
The lasting value of this book, in my opinion, is its focus on how the government (with or without a conspiracy) is restricting American freedoms. The ability of the US government to print worthless paper money is one thing to consider. The decades-old drive towards gun control is another obvious example. So is the relentless erosion of privacy.
Exposes the Globalist Beast!.......2007-01-30
Though somewhat dated, this book remains a classic in exposing the new world order conspiracy. This blows the lid on the international financiers schemes, plans (much of which have come to pass since this book was published) and shows how they instigated and financed communism. Allens take was that the global elites were going to mold the world into a borderless communist state with no sovereign nations or people. In retrospect they have shifted gears a little, now fusing the worst elements of capitalism with ideas of universalist/oneness of all men and social controls of communism/socialism. You could easily just insert the word "globalism" where Allen speaks of "communism" or "socialism" in this book and it doesn't seem dated at all.
You also get insight into the Federal Reserve, the CFR, the Bilderberger group and who instigated their founding and who controls them, the Rockefellers, the so called "philanthropic" foundations controlled by the global elites, the European banking syndicate, the making of puppet Presidents and other political figures, the ferminting of scam wars and lots more.
I don't agree with all of Allens conclusions or his solutions to defeating this globalist beast but None Dare Call it Conspiracy is a must read because it contains much vital information on deciphering the new world order conspiracy. I highly recomend The Rockefeller File by Allen also.
Book Description
Allen's big runaway best-seller, published in 1971. With fully documented work Allen exposes how conspiratorial forces behind the scenes actually "control" and "dictate" our government and its policies.
Customer Reviews:
Good stuff.......2007-02-13
I agree withe the above reviwer totally. I bought this to replace the one I bought in the seventies and lost.
And you just thought you were paranoid!!!!.......2006-03-22
This is one of those books that have people polarized. Anyone who attempts to balance this with three stars will get from both sides.
The first paragraph of the introduction lets you know what you are in for:
The story you are about to read is true. The names have not been changed to protect the guilty. This book may have the effect of changing your life. After reading this book you will never look at national and world events in the same way again.
I pretty much keep up with events and try to make connections. However I leave it up to the authors (Gary Allen with Larry Abraham) to make their point.
This book has eight chapters:
One...Don't Confuse me with the Facts
Two...Socialism---Royal Road to Power For The Super-Rich
Three... The Money Manipulators
Four...Bankrolling The Bolshevik Revolution
Five...Establishing The Establishment
Six...The Rockefellers And the Reds
Seven...Pressure From Above and Pressure From Below
Eight...You Are the answer.
If this book was written today I doubt if a word would be changed. But what a field day there would be with new additions.
