A "Found" Treasure.......2000-09-04
I bought this book three years ago and have probably read it 15 times. I took a 2 1/2 week course with Bobby at Penland School of Crafts right after buying the book. I had been collecting tin cans for 20 years and finally had a use for them all. I am slighltly addicted to buying craft books, but if I was stranded on an island this would be top on my list to have with me. I can't stress enough the thought and care that went into making this book. Bobby's sense of humor comes through and the photographs through out are splendid and plentiful. Buy this book and you will never look at the squashed beer or soda can on the road the same way again.

Book Description
"Contains...imaginative art objects...Hanson builds enthusiasm in his text for the craft, and he does it with wit."--Arts & Activities
In a newly revised and expanded version of his original success, celebrated folk artist Bobby Hanson takes the humble tin can and elevates it to art. On display in attention-grabbing photos are an array of quirky objects that will delight and amaze--and all it takes to make them are a few simple tools, some cans, and these simple instructions on cutting, shaping, riveting, and soldering. The charmingly fun projects include some childlike objects such as whistles, trucks, and airplanes; a "Tin Pan Alley" series of musical instruments, including a "canjo" and chimes; and even stunning jewelry and sculptures. Artists, metal crafters, and anyone seeking a new creative outlet will find inspiration aplenty in these uniquely original ideas and projects.

fine art of the tin can.......2007-01-19
has great photos, and ideas. it's a great inspirational book.
Pure pleasure and inspiration.......2006-03-04
Just received this book and only reluctantly put it down. If your creative urges lean towards the unusual you'll not be disappointed in Hansson's tin can art. He shares his techniques and his own 'personal art history' with a style that's both conversational and folksy. You won't be able to look at a tin can the same way after reading this book!
Pleasant Misunderstanding.......2005-08-22
The book was interesting. I thought it was going to be more of a how to do book.

Book Description
Tim Burton, the cinematic genius behind Batman, Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks!, and Edward Scissorhands, is a product of 1960s “monster culture,” including DC Comics’ Batman, over-the-top movie posters, and Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. Once a lonely teenager who found solace in horror flicks and cheesy Chiller Theater matinees, Burton relentlessly mines this history in his films, imbuing juvenile fantasy with emotional depth. This definitive study of Burton’s career tracks his life and work. Articles and interviews span his years as a malcontent animator at Walt Disney Studios through his creation of the pop-gothic aesthetic that marks all of his work. The book also features commentary by the editor on the origins of Burton’s ideas, a thorough analysis of each of his films, and images from the movies.
Customer Reviews:
A lot of great information about a great director!.......2003-01-20
"Tim Burton: A Child's Garden of Nightmares" is divided into chapters, each chapter being a movie that he directed or created (A Nightmare Before Christmas). For each chapter, there are articles that people wrote when the movie was being made and a review. I wish it had more interviews with Tim, but oh well. The book also has alot of pictures of him and the actors on set and there's a chapter about the short films that he made (Frankenweenie, Vincent). This book really taught me about Tim Burton and his films. Fun to read!

Invaluable Resource To Understanding The Art & Science Of Game Production.......2007-07-12
After shipping over 50 different titles in 15 years (working in various capacities), I thought I knew it all. However, after seeing Dan's common-sense approach and mastery of the production cycle beautifully laid out, I suddenly found myself an aspiring student in several areas. In the others, it was an affirmation of what I know, believe, and have personally experienced.
If you are an Assistant / Associate / Full-Fledged Producer--this book is for you. If you are someone who is striving to break into the games industry, again, this book is for you.
Dan is currently the CEO of Threewave Software in Vancouver B.C. (if anyone is keeping tabs), and his knowledge and personality resonates throughout the book.
Major kudos, a great read, and like the subject line says it's an invaluable resource for now and years to come.
Artist on the run for the big picture........2006-12-20
The book is very insightful of the anonymous role that bares the title "Producer." Producers ARE the backbone of development. They have to set the ground rules on game design and what actually gets developed for the consumer release. Without a good producer the development process will either never end or the game would fall apart to garbage, literally in one day. Producers seem to be the understated person in the development team. Many coworkers have snickered and have said things like "Of course he has a stupid big smile on his face. He's getting paid well to do nothing but order pizza." The obscure, daunting task of keeping together a big developing team, the assets, the budget, marketing, etc. all in line is an under appreciated feat. But somebody has to do it!
I recommend this book to all people working on a team, and all the hopeful talents who want to partake in the videogame industry. Videogame development is a physical and mentally tasking process. Producers do carry the burden of easing the shell-shock of how a "cool" job is actually hard work by planning and organizing the development schedule. I feel the book gives a good recap of what is expected from producers. If it feels like something is missing (was that piece copyrighted) this is a good book to check, hence the name The Game Producers Handbook. Good producers could very well become great producer after reading this book. Leadership skills are essential. The book covers quality traits of a good producer briefly, which I appreciate, very to the point. If a person needs more self-help material on leadership I recommend a purchase of a Forbes magazine. But my favorite tip from Handbook, and it just common sense: when having a meeting have a written agenda and mind the allotted time because dev-time is a lot of money. Finally it has been written, thanks Dan.
Another section of the book worth reading and following is the process of how to deliver, or pitch a game idea to get the production green light. It would have been nice to see the initial documents. I think everyone that has purchased this book was hoping to find the answer to how to get "my" game into development. For example, what exactly does the proposal document look like? Is it typed in formal-unbound report format? How much written is enough for a game proposal? What is too much and too confusing to read?
Lastly, developers who are uncertain of the role of a producer may benefit by understanding the producer is your work-friend, not the pizza boy. Or the guy that cuts out your work because he (hates) you:-P Understanding the various roles in a game team makes better teams. Your producer already knows this. This book is sure-fire recommend to all my coworkers. I believe the more your aware of the process of making a video game, makes you a more valuable employee. Many work blindly to the task at hand, and do a great job. But I like to see the big picture. But hey that me.
This one is a must-have!.......2006-12-15
This is the book that de-mystifies video game production. What a fantastic handbook!
A Must have for Game Developers.......2006-09-18
This a great resource book that gives you the insight into the game industry. The best part about this book is that its easy to pick up and hard to put down. The breath of information in this book is invalueable. It has chapter devoted to the commonly used tools and software that are used in today's game industry.
If you are looking to start your own company, this book should be next to your business plan.
Great overview on the industry.......2005-08-28
I'm not a game designer, but I'm interested in the process of how games are put together. Since this book is written from the point of view of the producer--the person charged with organizing much of the , it gives a great picture of how the different parts of the team come together. Irish talks about working with artists and programmers, designers and composers, and how the input of these different people fit into the final product. Even if you're not looking to be a producer, you might find this book interesting as a big picture of the "birth of a game."
[...]
The only overt problem with the book is that it has more than a few typos. Also it references a non-existent bibliography in one chapter.

Blood, Tears and Folly.......2003-12-09
I think this book is a excellent book because it talks more of the British than the US. I have noticed in many, many books about World War II, that they mention, in passing of the British. I don't think it's right to heap the credit on the Americans and just put a dusting of credit on the British. Therefore, that's why this book is a excellent book.
A gripping tale, though not a reference book.......2003-04-04
The subtitle of this book ("An objective view of world war 2") is perhaps a bit misleading. First of all, Len Deighton seems too close to the subject to be truly objective. Secondly, the book does not cover the whole of WW2.
Deighton's claim as regards the latter is that the war was essentially decided and the outcome inevitable at the moment the US entered into the fray. So he stops his description of the war in December 1941. Theoretically his view is (I think) correct. However, as a result we get a book that concentrates perhaps too much on the confrontation between the UK and Germany at the expense of the other nations involved.
Having said that, the book is a marvellous read. Deighton has a solid grasp on his subject, and his writing is second to none. This is not a dry reference tome; it is a page turner. Whilst I agree that Deighton at times contradicts himself and is not always accurate, I would recommend the book to anyone seeking an easy to read and well-informed (if not definitive) overview of the first two-and-a-half years of WW2 from a British perspective.
A Close Reading Reveals a Book of Unfulfilled Expectations.......2000-08-03
A Close Reading Reveals a Book of Unfulfilled Expectations, Errors, and Confusion.
I have reviewed the first edition published by Harper Collins in 1993. This edition was published in one volume.
"Blood Tears and Folly" by Len Deighton is a book, with a limited scope. This book is not a one volume history of World War II such as the one by Martin Gillbert. In fact the subtitle to "Blood, Tears, and Folly", "An Objective Look at World War II," is misleading. Many of the most important battles of the war, such as Stalingrad and Kursk are merely mentioned in passing, and others, Midway for example, as far as I can tell, are not mentioned at all. We also get critiques of men who no role whatsoever in World War II, for example on pp 126-30 Deighton dourly describes General Douglas Haig as a man not to be deterred by failure, or even to learn from it. General Haig commanded the British Expeditionary Force in World War I and died in 1928. I guess Deighton gives his take on General Haig as background to World War II. After all the British, and Churchill were against landing troops in France because of the thought of the casualties suffered in the First World War. There are differences in his treatment of personalities in this book and Deighton's previously published books. In a previous book, "Fighter" he described General Jodl as a "yes-man." In this book you read that Jodl was "intelligent and independent" and "in no way a lackey." (p. 437) but later on page 465 we read that all those present at a meeting between Hitler and General Guderian nodded in agreement at every sentence that Hitler uttered. Among those present was General Jodl. Deighton had it right the first time. There are out right errors as well. The map of "the Air Battlefield" on page 375 has "Lee Mallory" for "Leigh-Mallory." There are errors in the index, for example General Blumentritt is listed in the index as being mentioned on page 492, where in fact the passage appears one page earlier. Deighton goes into a great deal of detail in the areas of the war he does cover. Mostly he chronicles the early battles of World War II, from the early blitzkriegs in Poland and France, the battle of the Atlantic, and the Battle of Britain and Barbarosa. Sometimes he gives too much detail. I found that Deighton some times will give more than one explanation for an historical event. For example Hitler's decision to attack the Soviet Union is given two different explanations. On page 437 we read that Hitler "felt ridiculous and like most men, he found ridicule an unendurable burden. Hitler detested Marxists and he was determined that they should again be his enemy." On page 494 we read "But despite all of the Nazi talk of "Living Space" in the East, the German armies invaded the Soviet Union only because Hitler and his SS men wanted to murder the Jews and the Bolsheviks."

Depends on how you see the world.......2006-12-29
Simply put, this is a short book refuting standard liberal arguments on a range of political/cultural issues including: Abortion, welfare, Israel, illegal immigration, etc.) It's more entertaining (if you're a conservative) than it is informative. It has an liberal argument/conservative counter-argument format split into chapters based on the topic discussed so it's easier to skip around to whatever topic that interests you and whatever talking point you want to specifically read about.
If you're a conservative you'll love it, if you're a liberal you'll hate it (and I mean HATE it). If you don't fall into either of those camps, I don't see why you would want to bother with it. It does what it's meant to do; excite the conservative and unhinge the liberal (see other reviews of this book).
common sense logic.......2006-12-27
This book uses simple straight-forward logic to provide a clear response to left-wing claims. The arguments make perfect sense and definitively debunks liberal myths. This is definitely a must-have book for anyone trying to understand the issues.

Book Description
John James Audubon was a boy who loved the out-of-doors more than the in. He was a boy who believed in studying birds in nature, not just from books. And, in the fall of 1804, he was a boy determined to learn if the small birds nesting near his Pennsylvania home really would return the following spring. This book reveals how the youthful Audubon pioneered a technique essential to our understanding of birds. Capturing the early passion of America's greatest painter of birds, this story will leave young readers listening intently for the call of birds large and small near their own homes.
Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking!.......2005-03-18
My 5 children, ranging in age from 3-11 years, were absolutely captivated by this book. The author tells the story of a young John James Audubon and the illustrator brings the story alive thru rich mediums. This book is a perfect stepping stone to a variety of unit studies.
A survey of his pioneering observational techniques.......2005-01-03
John James Audubon loved nature and the outdoors as a child, and was determined to study birds in the wild rather than from books even as early as 1804. Jacqueline Davies' lively story of his youth and pioneering attitude will reach grades 3-6 with an excellent survey of his pioneering observational techniques. Drawings by Melissa Sweet provide lovely accompaniment to the story of the naturalist's early years.
Bird Lovers Take Note!.......2004-12-17
I loved reading this beautiful book with my nieces and nephew. There's so much to look at in the illustrations, and the writing flows naturally like the countryside Audubon explored. Children will be inspired to conduct their own investigations in the outside world after reading this. Each time you read this book, you find new things to look at and words to enjoy.
An Exquisite Marriage of Art and Text.......2004-12-16
Like a bird's song, the lyrical text by Jacqueline Davies is both simple and rich with undertones--the repetition of pattern, the careful selection of noun and verb, the staccato rhythm interspersed with longer musical lines. Paired with the exquisite collage art of Melissa Sweet, it is a perfect marriage. Children will love to pour over the tiny details in the illustrations. Teachers will revel in the biographical details of the text. All readers will come away with a feeling of enormous admiration for John James Audubon, whose passion gave the world so much knowledge and beauty.
Spectacular!.......2004-12-16
The Boy Who Drew Birds is one of those rare picture books that appeals to all ages. Young collectors will marvel when reading that Audubon's "Every shelf, every tabletop, every spare inch of floor, was covered with nests and eggs and tree branches and pebbles and lichen and feathers and stuffed birds . . ." Young artists may be shocked to discover that each year, on his birthday, John James removed the drawings on his wall that he had completed in the past 12 months, and burned them in the fireplace. All will be inspired by Audubon's inquisitiveness, his exploration of bird habits, and his ability to follow his passions (not to mention Melissa Sweet's amazing art). A beautifully written, gorgeous book!

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
ASIN: 0313302294 |
Book Description
Maya Angelou's autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was nominated for a National Book Award, yet in 1995 it topped the list of books most frequently challenged in schools and libraries. This interdisciplinary collection of documents and commentary explores the historical and social context, as well as the contemporary issues and controversies raised by Angelou's autobiography. A rich resource for teachers and students, it will help to enhance the reader's understanding of the historical and social forces that shaped Maya Angelou's experience--race relations in the pre-civil rights South, segregated schools, the African American church, and the African American family. It also examines the issue of childhood sexual abuse, the inclusion of which has been the basis of most of the challenges to the autobiography, and the issue of the work's censorship since its publication. This rich resource begins with a literary analysis of the structure and dramatic elements of Angelou's autobiography, as well as discussion of the genre of autobiography. Subsequent chapters include introductions and documents that provide insight into the topics of race relations, lynchings, and racial "etiquette"; the education of African Americans in the South in the 1930s (particularly county training schools like the one Angelou attended); the otherworldliness, emotion, and music of the African American church; African American women as nurturers, and the effect of frequent migration on children such as Angelou; information from the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect which puts the sexual abuse Angelou experiences in a broader context; and many news stories regarding censorship attempts on I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Documents in the work include newspaper articles, interviews and first-person narratives, government documents, excerpts from books and journals, and legal statutes. Study questions, ideas for project topics, and suggested readings conclude each chapter and further enhance the usefulness of this interdisciplinary research tool for students and teachers.
