Woronov's wild amphetamine-filled time in Warhol's Factory.......2005-08-20
Before reading this book I only knew Woronov through her delicious work as the mild-mannered murdering dominatrix in the black comedy "Eating Raoul." This book exposes her early years as an actress in Andy Warhol's Factory. It is a scary descent into a drug-filled world filled with drag queens, celebrities, hallucinations, mole people and inner demons. Woronov paints a distinctly unflattering portrait of herself as a violent would-be artist driven to the brink of insanity by amphetamines. It is frustrating because as a protagonist she is so unlikable, but at the same time the Mr. Toad's Wild Ride that she takes us on is compelling. The frustrating part of this book is that we don't really see her ultimate redemption, just her trip through hell.
living through the 60's .......2005-08-12
I'VE READ MANY BOOKS ON THE SIXTIES WARHOL FACTORY SCENE AND ITS FOLLOWERS AND THIS ONE WAS BY FAR THE FUNNIEST,MOST TRUTHFUL ACCOUNT OF THE WHOLE FACTORY SCENE THAT I HAVE READ TO DATE(I READ IT IN A DAY). I BELIEVE MARY'S ACCOUNT OF THE STORY BECAUSE SHE PUTS IT ALL OUT THERE AND PULLS NO PUNCHES.
IF YOU READ SOME OF THE OTHER ACCOUNTS OF THE FACTORY(DEPENDING ON WHO WROTE IT)THE WRITER ALWAYS TRYS TO PLAY DOWN THIER OWN PART IN THE MANIA. MARY DOES NOT DO THAT. SHE WAS A SPEED FREAK AND LETS YOU KNOW IT. I THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT.HOWEVER I THINK ANYONE WHO DOES NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THAT ERA WOULD HAVE A HARD TIME READING IT.
icily seductive.......2004-08-31
If you're expecting soup cans and canned supertars, you may be in for a shock. This is the squalid, squirming flip side of the swinging sixties, and Warhol is little more than an intermittent background hum. False advertising? not really, for Woronov-star of Chelsea Girls and other Warhol films-serves up a memoir tthat's both seedier, sleazier, and more sophisticated than the standard celebrity tell-all.
Woronov is icily seductive, coaxing the reader into a tar pit of sex and death, of drugs and drag queens, of the twilight zone between real life and hallucination. All-night speed binges, Velvet Underground gigs, the woman without a vagina-this freakshow is closer to David Lynch or Hieronymous Bosch than any of Warhol's dry-cleaned imagery. The book reads like a flashback; one moment you'll feel there's nothing going on, and the next you'll be sent spinning by a cunning metaphor or appalling image. A sleeper of a book, but full of strange and affecting dreams.
Interesting, strange.......2004-01-30
I read this because I like a lot of Mary Woronov's films and she seems pretty cool, so, what the heck. I know virtually nothing about Andy Warhol and the Factory, except for what I got in art history classes, which was pretty bland. I *think* I got a lot of this book, but who knows. It was tremendously interesting, and some parts are really, really funny. Others are really, really scary. For anyone interested in Andy Warhol and the people who made up the Factory, this book is for you. Mary Woronov was there and there is a chapter about many of the main people. It didn't mean much to me apart from entertainment because I had/have no idea who these people were/are, but for someone more serious about these people, this would be a must-read book. For the casual fan of Mary Woronov, you get a sense of her funny personality and stuff, her youth and college are covered, but there's nothing after the Factory. Whatever your interests, the book keeps your attention and is a great read.
The Hardest Girl in the world!.......2003-05-25
Mary Woronov's Years in the Warhol Scene/Factory! I loved this Book! The style, the juxtaposition of Hard edged Woman & a lost little girl. I loved that she was "unlikable" This is the type of strong heroine the Suburban punkettes should be emulating. She knows who the fakers are and where they reside. She follows her Own path on her Own terms. When she almost allowed that Stalker girl to get hit by the train I was Jarred but secretly hoping for, as Mary was for an ending worth telling the Grandkids about! Don't be afraid to Swim Underground!

Book Description
That most American of activities, the cross-country road trip, is here appropriated by two Dutch artists who set out to understand the United States in a way they never could through advertisements. From Los Angeles to New York, photographer Auke Vleer and designer Barbara Dijkuis traveled 8,000 kilometers (or 5,000 miles, depending on your point of view) over backroads and through small towns, documenting the landscapes, places and people they met along the way. A map that cleverly folds open from the cover of the book documents their journey. Through 750 images, laid out geographically from West Coast to East, the artists put the reader in the back seat, showing her America through their eyes. Tyler Whisnand's text for the book provides the soundtrack on the car's radio and the ultimate one-liner: inspired by Vleer and Dijkuis's pictures, Whisnand wrote a 3,000-word sentence that reflects his own vision of his home country.
Essay by Tyler Whisnand.

Book Description
A life in the movies has been an American dream for a century. Many people dream of becoming Hollywood professionals, but either aim too high (by trying to produce their own feature film) or too low (by hanging around restaurants frequented by movie stars) and end up frustrated. Wouldn't it be great if someone who knew what to do, someone who had achieved acclaim in the field, would walk us through the steps to success? At last, here is a book by a seasoned movie and television professional, Emmy winner Sandra Gordon, that is filled with practical, yet highly effective ways to build a career in entertainment. Gordon calls upon her own experience working on the television series PARTY OF FIVE, the movie RUDY and many more. There are many books that teach job-seekers how to write resumes or ace interviews, but not many books like ACTION! Uniquely designed for individuals who are interested in a career in the entertainment industry, whether they are recent college graduates or middle-aged career changers, ACTION! takes the formula out of the job-hunting book to the next step, telling its readers not only how to write their resumes, but where to send them, how to keep their jobs once they are hired, and how to advance in their career.
Customer Reviews:
WHERE was this book when i graduated college 4 years ago!.......2006-12-14
This book is an excellent over-view of the television & film world. If you've got your production goals set higher than local broadcast news, than I HIGHLY recommend this book. There's a great section on putting together your production resume, great real-world advice from Sandra & her production colleagues, detailed descriptions of what every position on a Film & TV set does, valuable info on how to work in various markets (Chicago, New York, LA, etc). I bought the book a few months ago and had the fortunate chance of meeting the author, and she is genuinely a wonderful woman who truly wants to help those interested in getting into & succeeding in "the business".
This book is also an easy & quick read, I read most of the book on a flight out to LA from Chicago. "Action! Establishing your Career..." is an ESSENTIAL read if you plan on moving out to LA and you don't have many production contacts there...I'm looking at you recent college grads! I've even recommended this book to friends who are actors on their way out to the coasts so they are educated about sets, crews, etiquette, etc.
"Action!" is a much easier & faster read than "The Independent Film Producer's Survival Guide" (which is itself a great book, but more of a legal resource, basically saves you from asking your entertainment lawyer dumb questions).
I'm not a newbie to production and this isn't a fake review, I'm a freelance Commercial Producer who is also very active in Chicago independent film; having served as producer on 4 features in the past two years, negotiated distribution deals for features, and I remain active in the scene via a Chicago based non-profit indie-sponsorship company. I find that I continue to pull "Action! Establishing your Career" off my bookshelf to use as a reference on projects.
A handy and practical guide.......2003-01-06
Action!: Establishing Your Career In Film & Television Production by Emmy award winning Sandra R. Gordon is a handy and practical guide specifically written for people who are interested in a career in one or more segments of the entertainment industry. From internship tips, to the ins and outs of the production department, to crafting a production resume, to the value of adopting a solid work ethic, Action! is a first-rate and highly readable resource intended and enthusiastically recommended for job seekers of all backgrounds seeking a position with film and/or television production careers.

Excellent book, highly recommended. A mix of magic history, biography and tricks. Won't be dissapointed.
Mysterious Stranger.......2006-07-13
AMAZING BOOK. If you are a David Blaine fan it is a must have. I will keep this review short. He goes into the history of magic, explaining the lifes of many famous magicians. He tells his own story from his childhood to his stunt Frozan in Time. He also explains how he first started in magic to where he is now. He explains a couple of card tricks, which is nice. He explains Buried Alive, Frozen in Time, and Vertigo. All I have to say is the book is amazing, and after I read this book the magic really got into me and I have started practicing and learning magic.
This Book Is Magic.......2006-06-06
I bought Mysterios stranger just days ago after being a David Blaine fan for several years. I have read it twice, once beginning to end. Blaine is an expert at his craft and is truly dedicated. Blaine tells the history of magic and reveals the stories of some of the great showmen of all time. The book takes a look at Blaine's bio and some of his magic and feats of endurance. The layout, art, and editing of the book are as brilliant as Blaine's magic. I would recommend this book to anyone, Blaine fan or not.
I truly respect the message that Blaine spreads and the manner in which he carries himself. He is always humble and spreads joy to people of all race, religion, and class. He believes(just as I) that mankind is capable of many things and that we always reach for our full potential. Blaine,as Houdini in his time, has set a new standard. I look forward to more from him.

Book Description
"H.L. Mencken wrote of Mark Twain, 'I believe that he was the true father of our national literature, the first genuinely American artist of the blood royal.' Father, Mark Twain is. And brother, friend, and wise old grandpa. But no offense to Mr. Mencken: Sam'l Clemens is American and there ain't no royalty around here 'ceptin maybe the Duke or some one like that. Unless it's the Prince and the Pauper or King Arthur in Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.
"Hank the Yankee asks, 'You know about transmigration of souls; do you know about transposition of epochs -- and bodies?'
"'Wit ye well, I saw it done.' Then, after a pause, added: 'I did it myself.'
"Just like Mark Twain -- Samuel Langhorne Clemens."

Facing the digital future.......2000-04-04
This is the best available overview of the issues surrounding digital broadcasting in an Australian context. Digital broadcasting is the future, for well or ill. It will greatly increase the number of available channels for broadcasting, both in television and radio. It will also allow data-casting and other functions which are probably as yet unimagined. But as with every new technology there are problems. The big one is cost. Digital broadcasting requires expensive new equipment for both transmission and reception. The broadcasters will want to force people to buy new digital TV sets as soon as possible, and the easiest way to do that is stop conventional broadcasts. But that would be unfair on the poor, and a monstrous waste besides. So who will decide when conventional broadcasting ends? And how will public and community broadcasters fare with the new technology? These are some of the questions policy makers are struggling to grapple with. Given's book provides an excellent introduction to the policy issues, and gives enough technical information to allow the reader to come to a more informed view. The writing is a little dry in places, but the information is invaluable for anyone interested in the future of broadcasting in Australia. It would also be of interest to people in other small countries keen to know how digital broadcasting issues are being handled in Australia.

A rediscovered gem...
Originally published under the title My Diary of Rambles with the 25th Mass. Volunteer Infantry, with Burnside's Coast Division; 18th Army Corps, and Army of the James by King and Billings, Printers, in 1884. This edition contains an additional editor's preface and editorial comments.
Although David L. Day was a "common" soldier he was without a doubt a highly individual member of the Union Army. His diary reflects this. He makes little mention of grand battles, great commanders, or political schemes. He wrote instead of his own experiences, observing his surroundings, his comrades and enemies, his emotions. Everything about the South fascinated him, from the way Southerners persisted in burning their own property whenever his regiment approached, to their farming practices and even their unique way of giving directions. He saw his service in the Army as not only a duty to the Union he loved but an opportunity to learn how the other half of America lived. His years in the South might as well have been an extended tour in a foreign country. And every moment of it held his interest.

Another Bitter Pill To Swallow Toward Healing Us!.......2006-12-17
Brother Akil posits what those who have some semblance of a clue in the BLAK nation know, as to who is responsible for the BLAK nation's condition. Using the theology of Master Fard Muhammad(GOD in person), and his messenger, Elijah Muhammad, Akil codifies the healing message that BLAK peole need. To those persons who attempt to discredit this work as racists, blaming white peole for the BLAK nation's condition, and or trying to belittle Akil's work, I ask you the question; Is what Akil says true or not? If it isn't true, then disprove what he says scientifically or be quiet in your rage and hypocrisy; it's gotten very old. To WE the original people of the earth, this is good medicine in helping to facilitate our healing and repairing the damage that our 6,000 year old enemy has done to us.
The truth hurts.................2006-10-18
I think every black person should read this book! Although it is geared toward the Black youth! It provides insight into our existence today as a people! Many adults still carry some of these attributes of negativity. I do not get the slightest impression of reverse racism since it still exists today. And in Black folks homes we don't teach racism to our children! Do you think for a moment the white militia is not racist? For those of you don't believe that just remember the Black Man who was dragged to his death by White men in this new millennia! His name was James Byrd Jr. in Jasper Texas. And then, to add injury to insult! Two white teenagers desecrated his grave! And if you didn't hear about it, then goggle it. Be mindful of our racism, our historical truth hurts ever so painfully. Wishing racism away won't make it so! I love the writer of this book. He hits us to the core of our very being with poignant purpose and in deity style. For those of you who disagree! You can't handle the truth! Now take off those rose colored glasses! I highly recommend "From Niggas to Gods"! I'm reading part II............The Layde
Reverse Racism is not the answer.......2006-02-23
Referring to "nice white people" as demons who are just trying to hold the "black man" down is not an answer to racism. Akil is a hypocrite because he is just as racist as the people he is accusing of being racist. Stereotyping all white people as being oppressive to other races because white people don't want to see African Americans succeed is ludicrous. Akil writes with hatred towards white people and blames white people for all of his shortcomings. His message is a horrible one to expose to young, influential adolescents because he is passing on a message of hate. He gives the impression that a black person not accomplishing his/her goals occurs only because white people will not allow black people to succeed. Maybe he should try passing along the message that people need to be responsible for their actions, and any person that genuinely strives to accomplish a goal can accomplish it.
Also, he writes on the back cover of his book that learning to read challenging material, such as work by Shakespeare, is a waste of time. This is the exact opposite of what he claims his goal is. Educating young people of all races is an equalizer. If Akil had studied more Shakespeare, then maybe his book wouldn't be riddled with grammatical errors.
okay...if you are a nigga.......2005-10-31
there are 2 destructive mentalities that are prevelant and also extremely popular amongst black men in america today. one of them is this new hip hop mentality of hustling coke, thugging out, having lots of sex and arguing that school/education/white collar jobs are for the birds. the second mentality is that hustling coke, being a thug, and having lots of sex is BAD for you, but it is also a product of years of oppression and white racism as is an education and working a white collar job (AKA being an uncle tom)...I will let your own practical reasoning complete my point for you.
I read this book when I was a teenager and very militant. I've outgrown this mentality and most of the people that will read it will too. I recommend it just to get a better understanding of the different schools of thought that exist within our community, but If you plan on being a productive citizen, have a good job, have a wife and some kids one day - or how should i put it - BE AN UNCLE TOM, then stay away from the mentality in this book.
A must read.......2005-09-02
Very well written, i love the 'In your face' teachings very well done.
