Book Description
This beautifully written study looks at the haunting, melancholy horror films Val Lewton made between 1942 and 1946 and finds them to be powerful commentaries on the American home front during World War II. Alexander Nemerov focuses on the iconic, isolated figures who appear in four of Lewton's small-budget classics--The Curse of the Cat People, The Ghost Ship, I Walked with a Zombie, and Bedlam. These ghosts, outcasts, and other apparitions of sorrow crystallize the anxiety and grief experienced by Americans during the war, emotions decidedly at odds with the official insistence on courage, patriotism, and optimism. In an evocative meditation on Lewton's use of these "icons of grief," Nemerov demonstrates the film-maker's interest in those who found themselves alienated by wartime society and illuminates the dark side of the American psyche in the 1940s.
Nemerov's rich study draws from Lewton's letters, novels, and scripts and from a wealth of historical material to shed light on both the visual and literary aspects of the filmmaker's work. Lavishly illustrated with more than fifty photographs, including many rare film stills, Icons of Grief recasts Lewton's horror films as suggestive commentaries on a troubled and hidden side of America during World War II.
Customer Reviews:
A Different Approach.......2007-03-24
This is perhaps the most original book written about Val Lewton's famous horror movies in decades. Nemerov looks at four images from Lewton's movies, images that center on little-known character actors Nemerov then shows how these tie into Lewton's Russian background, Lewton's career as a novelist, and American pop culture during World War II.
Rarely have I seen Lewton's films subjected to this kind of close analysis. While I might have wished that Nemerov focused on something from "The Seventh Victim" or "The Body Snatcher," I have to say that what he said made very good sense and placed Lewton in a broader context. (As opposed to the common idea that Lewton was such a genius that his films stand apart from everything else in the horror genre.) This is the rare book of which it can be said that I wish it were longer. Nemerov's enthusiasm for Lewton shines through, but he also has balanced judgment on Lewton's limitations as well. Strongly recommended for anyone interested in horror films or films of the Forties.
Wartime Horrors.......2005-10-27
"Icons of Grief" is a fascinating critical study of producer Val Lewton's RKO horror films within a World War II context. Historian Alexander Nemerov examines the subtle power of Lewton's low-budget chillers (notably "Cat People," "I Walked With a Zombie" and "The Ghost Ship") and the cultural reflection upon wartime America. By providing new insights on Lewton and his work, Nemerov encourages the reader to seek out these remarkable films.

Book Description
In the game of chess, the strongest piecethe Queenis often referred to as "bitch," and being female has been long considered a major disadvantage.
Chess Bitch, written by the 2004 U.S. Woman's Chess Champion, is an eye-opening account of how today's young female chess players are successfully knocking down the doors to this traditionally male game, infiltrating the male-owned sporting subculture of international chess, and giving the phrase "play like a girl" a whole new meaning.
Through interviews with and observation of the young globetrotting women chess players who challenge male domination, Chess Bitch shines a harsh light on the game's gender bias. Shahade begins by profiling the lives of great women players from history, starting with Vera Menchik, who defeated male professionals with incredible frequency and became the first woman's World Champion in 1927. She then investigates the women's chess dynasties in Georgia and China. She interviews the famous Polgar sisters, who refused to play in separate women's tournaments. She details her own chess adventurestraveling to tournaments from Reykjavik to Istanbul. And Shahade introduces us to such lesser-known chess personalities as the flamboyant Zambian player Linda Nangwale and the transgendered Texan Angela Alston and the European female chess players who hop from one country to another, playing chess by day and partying long into the night. For those who think of chess as two people sitting quietly across a table, Shahade paints a colorful world that most chess fans never knew existed.
Customer Reviews:
One-of-a-kind, behind-the-scenes tell-all .......2007-09-03
Two-time U.S. Women's Chess Champion Jennifer Shade presents Chess Bitch: Women in the Ultimate Intellectual Sport, a collection of true stories of expert globetrotting female chess players. Assembled from interviews, personal testimonies, and carefully researched profiles, Chess Bitch reveals what it was like for women to break into the male-dominated sport and subculture of chess, the adventure of traveling to matches worldwide, the quirks of talented individual female players, and much more. A handful of black-and-white photographs illustrate this one-of-a-kind, behind-the-scenes tell-all enthusiastically recommended for anyone with an interest in the competitive chess scene and the women who take part in it.
I like it.......2007-07-18
Jennifer Shahade is a fine chess player and I like her book about Women's chess.
Shahade tells us plenty about Women in chess, both in the United States and internationally. Plus, there are the obvious questions about how good women are at chess compared to men. Just what does it mean to "play chess like a girl?" Um, I always feel like asking "like which girl?" And there's the question of the relative strength of women and men in chess. That is, we can see that women are at a serious disadvantage against men in a sport such as weightlifting. But what about sports such as chess, go, or even bridge? Is chess really the sort of sport that requires enormous physical strength? Obviously not, although it does require good health, conditioning, and stamina. Chess is similar in some respects to an academic discipline, and women can excel at academic endeavors, so it is highly unlikely that women are genetically unable to excel at chess. It may be true, of course, that many women can't play chess well, just as many men can't play chess well.
Shahade does discuss the question of whether the weakness of women at chess compared to men shows that women are stupid or that chess is stupid. And it is clear not only that men vastly outnumber women at all levels of chess but that male chess players tend to spend more time on chess and play more tournament games than do women. That alone pretty much accounts for the fact that the men dominate the chess rankings. But why do women play so little chess? That's a somewhat controversial topic, although Shahade does have some things to say about it.
I recommend this book.
Audacious rightfulness!.......2007-06-22
I was a bit disappointed by the numerous grammar mistakes including various missing periods and commas here and there (no pun intended), but I do not feel it detracted enough from the book to be gruesome. It was still easily understandable what was being said, and Shahade alone certainly cannot be blamed for a book with so many obvious grammatical errors. The only fact I noticed that was too vague was that the camp she is referring to is really in NW or north central PA rather than "central PA." It would have been nice to have given this camp free advertising with the potential advertising as I think it was the first one to ever exist and deserves to continue on among the livelihood of other existing chess camps today. (It is likely that the camp would have given her permission to use its name.) Several other reviews state bad research on a 1980 Kasparov fact, but not too many other specifics are mentioned for what is "wrong" with the book. All the other "mistakes" are all based on opinion, so this is a book you will probably like a lot or not at all. For me, the book was open-minded and refreshing. It was personal enough that I felt she was with the reader at times, and her opinions were well supported based on her own experiences. I like her adult approach as this book is definitely not for children.
In a portion of the book, she mentions how a particular group of people seem racist overall based on her experience the reactions she's seen, and I've felt the same way for this particular group of people. Not everyone is like this of course, but when you learn history between the US and other countries, you can see why certain sad biases form unfortunately. Hopefully with books written like Chess B-tch, these type of barriers and well pointed out feminist barriers can be broken in this day and age.
Great book from first time author........2007-04-18
I knew absolutely nothing about the world of professional chess players before reading this book. I found this book to be well written, very easy to read, and interesting. I was certain I would be bored instantly, but as it turned out the book was quite entertaining and informative, an excellent effort from a first time author. It seems most of the bad reviews come from people who are either upset about the factual errors or are offended by the portrayals of some chess players. I think Chess Queens would have been a better title.
deserves 4.5 stars; thorough research, but all over the place sometimes.......2007-02-22
Positives:
1. Pioneer kind of a book
2. Excellent research
3. Variety of people interviewed
4. It is very evident that the author is well-read
5. Very honest about how she feels (as she changes opinins, she does
not try to hide it).
6. Reader goes through the intellectual journey that the author goes through
Negatives:
1. The book could be better organized with the same set of contents
2. More about the author herself (how she became a champ. e.g.) would
be desirable.
3. At times, author wanders off the topic making the reader wonder why she
is doing that.

Useful and fun for first-time parents.......2004-04-23
There's so much to do in NYC with your tot and the lilaguide does a good job of providing basic contact information and parent reviews of baby-related resources and activities. We had the LA guide and bought the NYC guide before we came to visit. It made figuring out where to go and what to do with our son much easier and fun.
Great idea, disappointing execution.......2004-03-30
Initially, I was very pleased to see that such a guide existed. Upon using the book for a couple months, however, I've found this Zagat-wannabe falls short in three important ways:
1) The way in which they collect their information is not reliable. The book claims it is based on 3000 surveys. But after a quick visit to its website, I found that respondents can get away with rating only one store or service. And, as long as you have a multiple email addresses, a single respondent can submit several reviews of the same place. You can also tell that not enough people rated certain categories because some sections have very few or even no ratings (e.g. doulas and lactation consultants).
2) It doesn't appear that the authors have their fact-checking. For example, I've already found that two of the fourteen places offered up in the parenting and resources and classes are no longer offering classes; of those, one hasn't been for quite some time!
3) Any New York City guide that includes the Olive Garden in its restaurant section should be ashamed of itself.

Overview of the First Campaigns of the Luftwaffe!.......2005-12-31
This volume, part of the Luftwaffe Colours series, chronicles the events in 1938 and '39 as Germany moved steadily towards war, which erupted in September 1939. This period was a time of change for the Luftwaffe as new models of the Bf 109 was introduced, old units were redesignated and relocated, new units created and so on. Following the conquest of Poland, the "Phony War" ensued. Air clashes between German and Allied units were infrequent as Germany shifted forces to the west for upcoming attacks on France and the Low Countries.
Mombeek does a good overall job of relating events during this period. Coverage of the conquest of Poland is however too brief. The book devotes only a single page to the entire campaign. While four accounts by aircrew involved in the attack help flesh out the narrative, more space should have been devoted to relating the month-long struggle.
As with other volumes in the series, the text is complemented by dozens of black and white photos and over 30 color profiles of period aircraft (Bf 109s, He 100s and Ar 68s) by Tom Tullis and others.
Overall, a good introduction to the subject.

The Hamptons, that famous string of beachside hamlets in New York State, are not just a quiet vacation spot for New England blue bloods like the duPonts and Vanderbilts. According to Steven Gaines, the author of a spate of "untold" and "true" biographies of such glitterati as Calvin Klein, they're also--surprise!--a sandbox of scandal.
And who exactly has been stirring things up? Gaines centers the book on an eccentric cast of characters in Hamptons history: semicloseted gay men of fabulous wealth and Ralph Lauren taste, half-cracked Mayflower descendants going to seed, and those "Philistines," the nouveau riche, blemishing the scenery with their terrible taste. "The establishment can hold off the newcomers for only so long," explains the author. "There are always more of Them than Us."
Heavily researched, the book is painstakingly detailed and unapologetically voyeuristic, full of "nine-ounce chilled Baccarat crystal stem glasses," "Chippendale sofas upholstered in Scalamandré silks," "Gucci loafers," and "fourteen-karat-gold wallpaper." It's a Champagne truffle: sinful, enticing, and pure froth at its center. --Maria Dolan

Dated but still fascinating.......2007-05-31
Philistines at the Hedgerow was one of those books that was the read of the summer when first released. It still an interesting read but in the nine years since it was written it has become very out of date. Maybe its time for the author to add some new chapters. If not a whole new book.
Couldn't get into it.......2007-01-25
My husband & I wanted to read this book together. We couldn't get into it. Perhaps if you are more familiar with the Hamptons, all the detail would be interesting to you, but we weren't compelled to continue... We found the writing 'thick' and the story laborious.
Where truth is stranger than fiction.......2006-06-30
An interesting and easy to read book that gives some basic early history on the area and towns known as the Hamptons, a wealthy waterfront area of Long Island in New York state, and profiles a number of notable residents and properties through the years. Initially settled because of it's natural beauty and fertile soil, the area became a haven for the wealthy who flaunt their wealth by trying not to appear that they're flaunting it. And over the years it attracted various groups such as artists, gays, Jews, and the newly-rich of the 80's stock markets, much to the chagrin of earlier residents who viewed such late-comers as outsiders lacking their good taste and refinement (Philistines). Several people are profiled such as artists Jackson Pollock and Alfonso Ossorio (and his partner Ted Dragon); successful businessmen Evan Frankel and Jerry Della Femina, and old-money Robert D. L. Gardiner. But the history is much more than just the people who lived there, it's the properties, too, and many homes and places and the changes that happened are covered.
Many reviews here mention the gossipy feel of the book, and I'll agree with that. But with the nature of the Hamptons and the people it attracts it's probably natural. Some of it becomes downright comic, especially with the legal codes that are really only used by those with a bit of authority to enhance their own social standing or pay back some perceived slight. As it says in the book, in the Hamptons everybody is somebody and each more important than the rest. To call some of the people 'eccentric' is putting it very mildly, though, when 'weird' might be more accurate. But it's all very interesting and hard to put down sometimes, and you can't help but shake your head at some of the ridiculous stories and people. There are a number of good historical photos included, although no maps, which would have been nice for those of us who aren't familiar with the area. And to echo another common sentiment in other reviews, it's a fun summer read.
"BUY EVERYTHING in sight! Hock your gold teeth!".......2006-03-15
"BUY EVERYTHING in sight! Hock your gold teeth!" says Allan Schneider the then "it" realtor of the Hamptons. "Their money is so new, the ink is wet," - speaking about the influx of: master of the universe, corporate raiders, stockbrokers, lawyers, junk bond kings and financiers that were invading the Hamptons at an increasing rate in the 1980's.
Not that the book stays in the 80's. It goes all the way back to the first few settlers and their dealings with the Indians in the mid 1600's. Especially interesting is the history of Gardiner Island and the Gardiner family, who have been the sole inhabitants for generations. Then in comes the Goelet family who came to America in 1676 and later founded Chemical Bank and manages a far reaching real estate empire from an unmarked townhouse on East 67th St. while remaining out of the business spotlight.
Also interesting is the history of The Creeks, a 57 acre estate with 2,000 feet on Georgica Pond (a 290 acre tidal pond) with 6 guest houses that is the largest privately held estate in the Hamptons. It's owned by Ron Perelman, who paid $12.5 million in 1993 from an estate who bought it for $35,000 in 1951. When it was sold in 1894 for $10,500 it was called Sheeps Point and the East Hampton Star called the price, "a large advance from the original cost".
The book gives you a good sense of how real estate in good locations can explode in value while sharing some intrigue regarding the who's who of the Northeast and how they jockey for prominence in the "social register".

Too High Strung.......2005-10-14
Philistines at the Hedgerow traces the roots of fabulosity in New York's most famous vacation spot, providing an insider's, gossip-filled look at the scandals and quirks of the area and its inhabitants. Gaines examines the relationships between property and personality that have developed over the years at the beachfront, from building castles to accumulating mass amounts of acreage where parties can be thrown and paparazzi shots can be taken. Great book albeit no color........1998-07-19
We checked out this book from a local library and were so impressed we are ordering it from Amazon. It is comprehensive on the subjects covered without getting technically boring. A must for bird lovers of the Pacific Northwest!
