Benny Goodman, the King of Swing.......2002-09-01
Well, first off I didn't order this online. I bought it at a store. And it was just what I was looking for. Any clarinet player who is interested in jazz should definitely check this out. Not only does this book include 30 solos played by Benny Goodman, it also gives tips and pointers on how to play with "swing" and other techniques.
This book will definitely help you, but it may also hurt you if you're not willing to be patient and take it slow at first. If you don't you'll never hit those really high 32nd triplets.
wonderful.......2001-04-16
this was an exellent book i would reconmend it to anyone who loves to play the clairnet

Expand Your Puzzle Horizons
100 Great New Logic Puzzles for Sudoku Lovers to Enjoy
Sudoku is now America’s most popular puzzle as millions of fans have discovered the joys of these addictive brainteasers. Now New York Times crossword editor and “America’s puzzlemaster” Will Shortz introduces five sudoku variations that will stretch your brain in new directions! From the deceptively simple-looking kakuro puzzles to the added challenge of Killer Sudoku, these five new puzzle types will challenge, amuse, and delight. What are you waiting for?
Customer Reviews:
enjoyable sudoku variations.......2007-09-23
I really enjoy sudoku, kakuro (cross sums) and will shortz, so I was looking forward to this book and was not disappointed. Here you'll find Wacky Sudoku, in which you are plying with non-3x3 subgrids; Hyper Sudoku, in which there are 4 3x3 grids embedded within the usual puzzle and these must also meet Sudoku solving criteria; ABC Sudoku, sometimes called Wordoku -- these were not terribly challenging; Killer Sudoku, a combination of Sudoku and Kakuro; and Kakuro. There are 100 puzzles altogether. Size of the book is good, 6'x9" with nice big grids.
I'd buy it again.
Exercise your brain!.......2007-07-24
If you loved sudoku puzzles but you have done so many that they are not fun anymore, then these puzzles are what you need. Each type of variation starts out simple and gets more challenging with each puzzle. The size of the puzzles on each page make them comfortable to do. As with all Will Shortz books, the puzzles are well designed to develop your logic skills as you move up in difficulty. These are fun puzzles. Do one every day and keep your brain in optimal condition.
A welcome break from the routine.......2007-06-19
I started off in Sudokus with New York Post Sudoku 1: The Official Utterly Addictive Number-Placing Puzzle (New York Post Su Doku) and its sequels. Although these were great at first, at some point it just got old: there's only so much of interest you can do with nine digits in a nine by nine grid.
Then I found this book and I was reinvigorated. It contains a number of different types of puzzles, all of which fit into the Sudoku grid style yet all of which are refreshingly different.
This book has "Wacky Sudoku" which the rest of the world seems to call Jigsaw Sudoku The "Daily Telegraph" Jigsaw Sudoku (Daily Telegraph). With these, the grids are no longer 3 x 3 but may be arbitrary shapes enclosing nine spaces. The regular rules apply in that rows, columns and the enclosed spaces all have unique 1 - 9 digits, but you need to think differently to solve them.
Hyper Sudoku has overlapping square grids which I had fun with but which seemed to make the puzzles much simpler to solve.
It also has a version of Sudoku using letters and spelling out a nine letter word or phrase. I had great fun with these and ended up getting an entire book of them Godoku: 200 Fun and Challenging Sudoku-style Puzzles with Letters!.
There were also Killer Sudoku and Kakuro puzzles, but these weren't my favorites. Unlike regular Sudokus where you're really trying to make a set of non-repeating digits (or letters), Killer Sudoku and Kakuro are more algebraic in nature. But -- I still did them all!
For anyone who is starting to get bored with regular Sudokus, or even for anyone who just wants to try some of the variations out there, I highly recommend this book. It's enjoyable, the puzzles are never so hard that they can't be solved and I simply enjoyed being able to open the book to a random page and find a new puzzle to be solved. Unlike plain old 9 x 9 Sudoku, you'll never find yourself bored with these.
Easy, Hard to Read.......2007-05-13
The puzzles are VERY easy and the print is very hard to read, especially in the killer sudokus.
Sudoku meets middle school homework.......2007-03-10
I'm a fan of variation. I like to intersperse a little Acey-Ducey into my backgammon. I like to break up the old Texas Hold-`Em with some Omaha Hi-Lo, nighttime baseball, 7/27, Screw Your Neighbor, or good old fashioned 5 card draw. So imagine my excitement to see Will Shortz' new book of Sudoku variations. Something novel, something to give me back that same rush I used to get doing regular Sudokus.
I have to report mixed results. Some of these variants have the appearance of a novel challenge but are actually easier. Or the same, as in the case of the first set, the "Wacky Sudoku." Wacky just means the boxes are irregularly shaped. So everything is the same, but you need to squint at the shapes, take a beat, and then solve it the same way you would any Sudoku. It just slows you down a step, and you might have to adjust your notation system accordingly.
It's a little bit of headache but not much of a variation. An anaology would be me inventing "Dim Sudoku" and claiming that as an a new game. It would be a version in which you do Sudoku in a room that doesn't have adequate lighting, so it's a little harder and hurts your head.
"Hyper Sodoku" falls in the same category as Samurai Sudoku, those overlapping puzzles, but in the hyper variant there are 4 extra 3X3 boxes inlaid within the puzzle, in which the same rules apply, no repeating of the digits one through 9. Sounds trickier but it is actually easier, it's additional data. Some of the little boxes are contained in a column, a row, and then two different 3X3 boxes, so there are more paths of deduction. "Wordoku" I guess is for people who really dig those jumble puzzles; it's basically a cross-contamination of the two. You have letters instead of numbers, so it slows you down for a second while you get a hang of the 9 letters. But then, one shaded column contains a 9 letter word. So when you are about two-thirds done with your Sudoku, all of a sudden you solve the jumble and get to cheat the puzzle a little.
Those first three variations didn't do a lot for me, since they just gently impede you instead of calling for a new approach to the puzzle. It's like shooting pool with a heavy winter coat on. But then, we get "Killer Sudoku," which really is different. There aren't enough numbers given to just get going on the puzzle, but smaller grids are marked off with the sums of the numbers in those squares listed in the corners. So, if Wordoku is for people intimidated by the mathematical appearance of Sudoku, then Killer Sudoku is for people who resent the actual lack of arithmetic in the classic Sudoku. You really do need to think through these differently, which I enjoyed. These lead to "Karoku," and now you're doing algebra. This is a little bit of a trend on its own, where you are given the vertical and horizontal sums and then have to fill in the numbers. Digits can't repeat within a single answer. You have to generate the sets of possible numbers and then eliminate them down to the single integers. I don't think the excitement will last long, it feels a little too homeworky.
I think the excitement of Karoku will wear off in about the same amount of time as math in base-8. But at least it is really different, forces you to flex some different muscles for the moment.

Book Description
This moving tale uses personal accounts of the veterans who achieved victory in the biggest and last great naval battle, largely fought with aging ships, untested reserve crews, and teenaged combat aircraft pilots. Often overshadowed by other Pacific War engagements such as Midway or Guadalcanal, the Battle of Leyte Gulf was characterized by some of the most gallant hours in seagoing history: the U.S. Navy's defeat of the combined Japanese fleet during the invasion of the Philippines in October 1944. Involving more ships than even the gargantuan First World War Battle of Jutland and two hundred thousand men, it was the biggest naval battle in world history. It marked the last time huge capital ships fought within sight and sound of each other. Using the personal accounts of the men who were there, Sears tells this mammoth and compelling story. The Battle of Leyte Gulf could have been the Pacific War's Battle of the Bulge. In a space of 12 hours, Japan, a beaten, cornered enemy, was able to devise and execute a strategy that very nearly pierced the heart of America's war machine. The real margin of victory would come from surprising quarters: from aging ships risen from the graveyard of the war's infamous first day; from small, hastily constructed ships with largely untested reserve crews; from fragile support ships never intended to be anywhere near battles of this scale; and from combat aircraft piloted by teenagers.
Customer Reviews:
Good but not Great.......2007-07-29
This book did an excellent job of presenting the memories of the men who fought in this battle. The generation that fought in World War II is dying off at a rapid rate; Sears has done a great service by preserving this material.
The book contains several inaccuracies that should be corrected before another edition goes to press. For example, the USS Pennsylvania is identified as having 16-inch guns (page 152). In fact, the Pennsylvania carried 12 14-inch guns. It is stated that the USS Fletcher was named for Admiral Frank Fletcher, the father of Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher (page 240). In actuality, Admiral Frank Friday Fletcher, for whom the Fletcher was named, was the uncle of the famous World War II admiral.
More importantly, the author fails to fully explain Halsey's race to the north with his carries and his failure to leave his battleships behind to guard San Bernardino Strait. Halsey's actions almost lead to catastrophe for the United States. The blood of those who died aboard the ships of Taffy 3 is on his hands.
Those who want a far better account of the battle should read "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors: The Extraordinary World War II Story of the U.S. Navy's Finest Hour" by James D. Hornfischer.
Duty first.......2006-03-21
When a World War II Sailor went to General Quarters in proximity to the suspected presence of the enemy, he wasn't aware of any "big picture" strategy for the action his ship was about to see. Mr. Sears, in this marvelous book, captures the devotion to duty regardless of the inherent danger of everyday Sailors and Navy airmen. His approach, exploring the backgrounds and action activities of his subjects as this battle unfolded, makes for most enjoyable and exciting reading. We see in vivid detail the way Sailormen of the "Greatest Generation" conquered their fears and lived with the terror of combat and survival by remembering that they had a job to do and a duty to their ship and shipmates. Exploring the battle through those eyes and memories, as opposed to the records of the Admirals and Historical Section officers, makes this one of the best books in my military history collection.
A book that everyone should read........2006-03-09
My wife purchased a copy of this book for my Christmas present. I had a chance to read it on my last business trip and I want to thank Mr. David Sear for the great job recording the history of this amazing event and action of all the hero's who were there.
I was on the USS Boyd during Vietnam and its last years in our Navy. It was very active during WWII in the Pacific and operated in the area of the Leyte battle. We have a few of the original crew from WWII, when the ship was put into commission, attending our reunions and they have related some of the stories of the battle.
It is very important that we continue to record and read the history of our brave men and women so our future generations know why we have to standup and fight for our freedom.
Mr. Sear has recorded well these events and the actions of our brave men who were willing to give up their own lives so our Nation would continue to exist.
Thanks for reminding us what the United States of America is all about.
William Daughtrey, Richmond, Virginia.......2005-10-01
The book fails to engage the reader in the events of the battle and does not provide significant insight into the strategy of the battle or the context within which it was fought. For example, where was Nimitz, why was he pulled away, what was MacAtrhur doing at this time, etc. In comparing this book to William Manchester's "Out of Darkness" it is apparent that David Sears has neither the breadth of vocublary or the command of the English language to cobble together one of those "can not put it down" books for which "Out of Darkness" qualifies.
A five star book.......2005-08-05
David Sears expertly blends personal experiences of sailors in the Battle of Leyte Gulf with historical facts to bring to the reader a clear picture of events surrounding that combat action. It's the personal accounts interwoven into the clash of forces which make this book an exciting read. The reader is made to feel the danger and excitement which provide an understanding of the sacrifices made by those young men. One example is the incident during the battle when the PT boats are deployed against Japanese warships. Two crewmen were operating a 20 mm gun near the boat's stern when a Japanese 3 inch shell passed between them. One can only imagine their feelings. I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
Do you ever wonder if there’s a connection between the corruption scandals in the news and the steady decline in the quality of life for millions of Americans?
Do you ever wonder what corporations get for the millions of dollars they pour into the American political system?
Do you ever think the government has been hijacked by forces hostile to average Americans?
Do you ever want to fight back?
Millions of Americans lack health care and millions more struggle to afford it. Politicians claim they care, then pass legislation that just sends more cash to the HMOs. Wages have been stagnant for thirty years, even as corporate profits skyrocket. Politicians say they want to fix the problem and then pass bills written by lobbyists that drive wages even lower and punish those crushed by debt. Jobs are being shipped overseas, pensions are being cut, and energy is becoming unaffordable. And our government, more concerned about maintaining its corporate sponsorship than protecting its citizens, does nothing about it.
In Hostile Takeover, David Sirota, a major new voice in American politics, seeks to open the eyes of ordinary Americans to the fact that corporate interests have undermined democracy, aided and abetted by their lackeys in our allegedly representative government. At a time when more and more of America’s major political leaders are being indicted or investigated for corruption, Sirota takes readers on a journey that shows how all of this nefarious behavior happened right under our noses—and how the high-profile scandals are merely one product of a political system and debate wholly owned by Big Money interests. Sirota considers major public issues that feel intractable—like spiraling health care costs, the outsourcing of jobs, the inequities of the tax code, and out-of-control energy prices—and shows how in each case workable solutions are buried under the lies of lobbyists, the influence of campaign cash, and the ubiquitous spin machine financed by Big Business.
With fiery passion, pinpoint wit, and lucid analysis, Hostile Takeover reveals the true enemies of reform and their increasingly sophisticated—and hostile—tactics. It’s an essential guidebook for those of us tired of the government selling us out—and determined to take our country back.

Hostile Takeover: How Big Money and Corruption Conquered Our Government --And How We Take It Back.......2007-07-31
I am not sure how I can say I love this book when what it is saying makes me so angry that I can only read it for a short period of time before I have to take a break from it. It/he speaks truth to power---a very ugly and perverted power. I fear that no politician is free from the corruption; and, I wonder how we can ever take back our government.
Good, But Biased.......2007-07-24
"Hostile Takeover" was an excellent book showcasing just how tight Corporate America and the US government are when it comes to domestic issues. It is highly recommended for everyone to read. I found a few flaws in it however. One was that it did not focus on the hostile takeover of US foreign policy for big business interests. However, this subject could be a different book entirely, which is the job of Noam Chomsky. It is good he doesnt focus on the same subject as Chomsky and many others, but I felt he could have at least mentioned some of the issues of foreign policy. Another problem for me was that the author had no problem calling out think tanks and institutes as conservative, but never labeled others that he supported as liberal, instead constantly calling them "nonpartisan". I am a libertarian, but I enjoyed this book. He is most certainly a liberal but he does have some pretty good ideas to the solve problems of the hostile takeover and I continually found myself agreeing with him. Recommended for any thoughtful person concerned with our counry's future.
Give them as Gifts.......2007-02-23
I got this book from the library and read it over a month. It took me that long because every night I read it, I was sick to my stomach. It is so chock full of facts that I want the paperback when it comes out just so I can use it as a reference tool when I argue with my conservative friends about politics. Come to think of it, I'd like to buy copies for anyone that still feels free trade is a good idea, that CEO's really deserve the pay they are getting, and it would be a good idea to privatize social security.
