Book Description
This book tackles the hard truths that other screenwriting books are afraid to confront. Film and TV writing is the most competitive literary field in the world and if an aspiring does not get the work done properly, he or she will fail.
Customer Reviews:
Like the Curates egg.......2007-07-16
I haven't read it all in sequence just the chapters that appealed and like the curate's egg it's good in parts. It's filled with insider information and I get the feeling they are only telling us the bits they want to tell us, it's all a bit partial. There is very little uesable information in it.It was a fascinating if unhelpful read. You learn what certain people think about the business and how they started but a lot of it is irrelevant as it is too personal. There is very little you can take away and apply to yourself. It's an interesting but, strangely, uninformative read.
Screenwriters-Read this NOW before you write another word.......2005-05-13
There are hundreds of books about screenwriting filled with information about how to write a good script but they are all useless unless potential screenwriters read ALONE IN A ROOM first. Don't waste your time spending long hard hours toiling over a spec script, pet project, or screen adaptation until you've read this book. As Lewinski says "I've got no reason to lie to you" - and he doesn't. This book is chocked full of facts delivered to the reader in an easy, reader-friendly manner. Its like you sat down to have coffee with a highly respected and all-knowing Hollywood insider and he's decided to tell you the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth....and if his wisdom isn't enough, he interviews some of the most talented and successful screenwriters of both feature films and television and they tell you the whole truth also. If you're thinking of writing a spec script, you're currently writing your second or third script, or you've already completed ten scripts - get this book. You need this information. Its not available anywhere else. Lewinski is an important Hollywood resource, himself a successful screenwriter and mentor. When he states at the end of this book that he wishes he would have had a book like this before he started knocking around Hollywood, he is echoing all of our thoughts exactly - those of us who had to find our own way. Now you don't have to go into the whole scene of being a Hollywood player blindly....ALONE IN A ROOM is there for you. Get it now. Utilize this great advice and become an extremely successful screenwriter so you don't have to remain "alone in your room."
Laurie Scheer, Media Consultant and Professor, Yale University.
Stranger in the strangest of lands.......2004-10-01
A play entitled City of Angels co-written by David Zippel and Larry Gelbart (whom Mr. Lewinski interviews here) details the story of a novelist who longs to see his books made into films. Said novelist sees his creations altered and the producer taking as much credit for the story as the actual writer. Welcome to Hollywood.
Mr. Lewinski paints an excellent picture of what it is like to be both a struggling and successful screenwriter in the industry by combining personal accounts as well of those interviewed. Basically, he tells it like it is whereas other authors sugarcoat the long, arduous journey from creative inspiration to final product.
What I admired about the book is that it's not a "how to"; rather it is a "how it is" insiders look at the pitfalls, successes and stagnations of various writing careers. The interviewees range from those just starting out to established vets...from those whose names you might never recognize to Oscar nominees. He adroitly interweaves the tales and tribulations of these people with advice on making it in the business.
What I admire is that Mr. Lewinski always looks at it as a business and rightly so. As an aspiring writer, I sometimes fail to remember that films are a mass market product and while you long to see your vision up on screen as that novelist in City of Angels, remember that you will have to swallow your pride, alter your vision and sometimes you will get to make your dreams come true.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone with fantastic (or realistic)illusions of writing the great american screenplay as it really puts things in perspective.
Great advice from working screenwriters.......2004-09-17
Everyone is working on a screenplay, it seems, but who is actually FINISHING them? Lewinski's book looks into the day-to-day life of actual, working and earning screenwriters and gives those of us who are still striving some sound advice on getting the job done. Recommended!
Marie Jones, BookIdeas.com and AbsoluteWrite reviewer says:.......2004-08-27
No other career draws more moths to the flame than that of screenwriting. Everyone believes they can make a "better" movie, and many do try. Many fail. Writer and journalist John Scott Lewinski serves up a hot platter of truth in "ALONE IN A ROOM: Secrets of Successful Screenwriters," and for those bold enough to read on, the secrets that are revealed will either inspire you to embrace the flame, or send you running for the safer shores of a regular job and a steady paycheck.
No stranger to the Hollywood game, the author states up front the biggest truth of all; that screenwriting is just that...a game. He then proceeds to give the reader all the necessary tools, tips, strategies, and game pieces in order to play that game, and do it with professionalism, commitment and a real love of both movies and the movie business. A telling quote from the introduction sums up the power and promise of this book. Lewinski states, "I believe the difference between those doing the work and those longing for the jobs is the ability to accept the realities of the business and be able to perform effectively within those realities."
If you are willing to accept Lewinski's beliefs about the realities of screenwriting success, then read on, for he has much wisdom to offer, as well as much wisdom from some of the most successful writers, agents, managers and movers and shakers in Hollywood, who give their own insider viewpoints throughout the book. These interviews, most notably those of the writers themselves, shed light upon the dark corners of both getting down to the creative hard work of writing as well as being able to function well as a salesperson once the writing is done. Without these inside views and perceptions, many writers would flounder. Guidance, even in a cut-throat place like Hollywood, is golden.
"ALONE IN A ROOM" is not a how-to-write-a-script book, rather it is a field guide to navigating the system of being a working writer in the business, from coming up with marketable ideas, to writing alone in a room on spec before the terrifying specter of the blank page, to accepting writing assignments and collaborating with others, to overcoming the challenges of adapting someone else's work for the screen. We also get inside glimpses into the realities of writing as part of a team or staff, the art of comedic writing, dealing with those dreaded "notes" and how to best utilize constructive criticism, dramatic writing for TV, being professional in meetings and making a good impression, getting your work out there to the people who can say yes or no, and how to deal with rejection as well as acceptance and, hopefully, success. As "they" say ("they" being those elusive experts at everything that we all quote from time to time!), sometimes success is more frightening than failure.
Reading this book, as an aspiring screenwriter myself, I felt as though the author cared not just about my fate, but about the fate of all writers, and that personal respect and shared understanding makes this book inspiring and motivating. Many screenwriting books are written by jaded writing professors or wanna-be's who couldn't quite make it big, and want to make sure you don't surpass their mediocrity, but this book gave me none of that negativity, condescension or arrogance. "ALONE IN A ROOM" is honest to be sure, but in a way that will make your path as a screenwriter all the more easy to walk, having now been awakened to many of the obstacles you may encounter.
Knowledge is power, and we all know that when it comes to the movie business, power is everything. "ALONE IN A ROOM" is like a flashlight that you, the writer, can shine on the shadowy corners of a game based upon the power of creativity to sell tickets and make a lot of people rich and famous. By learning the rules and realities of the game, you can not only partake in all the fun and excitement...but maybe even score big and win. At the very least you'll have a great time playing.

Dated But Detailed.......2007-02-20
This book is a bit dated (©1985), but the info inside is still applicable for today's songwriters. It's in large print and has a lot of great advice on how to shop and submit your songs. It's a great book to have in your songwriting arsenal. Not to mention, Mark Liggett, 1 of the authors, is a successful songwriter/producer. Well worth the price!

Arguably, the best chess tutorial ever written.......2007-09-08
A must have for anyone wishing to learn chess from scratch, and for all beginning level players. Fantastic reading which requires no chess board. Great companion for those long plane or train trips.
In a Category All its Own.......2007-07-28
For the right person at the right point in learning chess I believe that this is the best book. I am a USCF correspondence chess master and over the board expert. I credit this book to getting me a good start.
Chess is a skill. Learning a skill requires practice. This book helps develop that skill and the pattern recognition that goes along with that. It does so in a way that is not intimidating. It does not teach all chess tactics. It just gets you started on the path to tactical mastery, but it is a good start.
It has a unique programmed instruction format that does not require learning chess notation. This is significant as "learning a new language" just to learn chess is off putting and creates obstacles to learning the game. After an introduction to the rules the reader practices chess tactics in a variety of positions of increasing difficulty. This book helps to build a strong foundation of tactical skill.
If you can routinely solve simple "mate-in-two" problems quickly you probably already have the skill this book can teach. If not, I think this book will improve your game.
The Title Says, "Teaches".......2007-05-01
TEACHES! You teach beginners, whether you're Bobby FIscher (a pompous lout) or the faculty advisor of a grammar school chess club. In that respect, this is a great beginner book.
Which is why, when I was looking for a "teaches chess" book twenty-five years later, this is the book I looked for.
No, it will not make you an expert. You can't get that from a book. But for the basics, nothing beats this book.
Handy To Keep Close.......2007-04-23
A great beginner book on the essentials of chess, if your new to chess or it's been awhile since you played this is a perfect book to go through. It starts out explaining the moves of chess for the total beginner. A really nice feature of this book is a chess set is not needed, all the examples of the book you can work through right in your head. The puzzles are listed on one page and the answer is located on the back of the page. The size of the book is small enough to fit in a coat pocket for those times when you have some time to kill. Overall a great book for the beginner.
Graphic chess tutorial.......2007-03-28
This is a very good book on chess by Bobby Fisher. I purchased it initially in the 1970's when it first came out. This was a new copy I gave to my grandsons. The entire book shows you chess board layots on one page and asks a question or gives you information. The following page gives you the answer or demenstrates the point being made on another chess board. It is easy to follow, I read it all over again. My grandsons are using it and picking up some good pointers.I even set up some of the chess game layouts on my computer.

Book Description
The commissioned officer ranks in the British Army from 1740-1815 were almost entirely composed of the affluent and educated - the sons of the landed gentry, the wealthy, and other professional people. This title looks at the enlistment, training, daily life and combat experiences of the typical British officer in the crucial periods of the North American conflicts, the American Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars. It compliments the author's previous treatments in Warrior 19 British Redcoat 1740-93 and Warrior 20 British Redcoat (2) 1793-1815, which deal exclusively with the common infantryman, and balances these discussions through a look at the 'fellows in silk stockings'. Particular emphasis is placed on the experiences and activities in North America in the late 18th century.
Book Description
Who will lead America in the years to come? Letters from Young Activists introduces America's bold, exciting, new generation of activists. These diverse authors challenge the common misconception that today's young people are apathetic, shallow, and materialistic. Aged ten to thirty-one, these atheist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, pagan, transgender, heterosexual, bisexual, metrosexual Americans are from every type of background and ethnicity, but are united by their struggle toward a common goal. They are the inheritors of their parents' legacy from the sixties, but also have the imagination and courage to embark on new paths and different directions.
In letters addressed to their parents, to past generations, to each other, to the youth of tomorrow and to their future selves, each author articulates his or her vision for the world as they work towards racial, economic, gender, environmental and global justice. As the editors write in their introduction: "From globalization to the war on terrorism and beyond, our generation is compelled to action in the midst of a rapidly changing, and unique political moment Our challenge, and yours, is to live our lives in a way that does not make a mockery of our values."
Customer Reviews:
I know why Publisher's Weekly gave this book such a bad review..........2006-11-12
The book starts off by telling you how the current government administration is deluding us with one sided facts. Fair enough, maybe they'll go on an prove this... nope. And thus, a major theme of the book has been unveiled: a one sided presentation of unsubstantiated opinion. Unfortunately, the perpetrators are the authors.
I couldn't say I read one convincing argument throughout the entire book. I realize these are informal letters, but it comes across more as whining than a plan of action, unified by a sense of need for change (which the editors purport it to be).
As an example:
"I believe it is the fault of the United States educational system that my mother has been on the streets since she was thirteen years old; that my parents and many other parents divorce; that I, and many other children, have been sexually molested; that incest continues to occur; that my mother, like many others, abandoned my siblings and me; that my mother, father, other parents, and youth have been in and out of prison, that my sisters and brother word at fast food restaurants; that my sisters get pregnant at a young age; that my cousins and friends are dying because of gangs; and that the cycle of violence continues."
-Jessica Vasquez
That's some belief. A lot of the letters, this one especially, ooze a total lack of self responsibility. Not to say that this isn't a bad state of affairs, and that schools can't be improved, but try to find any proof of the correlation in this article and you'll be wasting your time.
Don't let your children read this if you're worried about exposing them to poor ideals of self-responsibility, or if you're worried that their idea of what an argument (with facts...) might be negatively affected.
A fun quick- read for kids of all ages!.......2006-03-28
I don't understand why Publishers Weekly gave this book such a poor review. I thoroughly enjoyed it, though I do have a few minor criticisms of it that deter me from giving it the 5 stars that perhaps it really deserves. While the majority of the essays are insightful and well-written, a few smack of a wishy-washy liberalism, rather than providing a more radical social analysis. For example, some argue for more government spending for public education, rather than advocating for homeschooling or freeschooling. (To learn more about the homeschooling movement, check out Grace Llewellyn's wonderful book, "The Teenage Liberation Handbook.") Likewise, while there isn't consensus among the young writers about gay marriage, some support it, rather than critiquing marriage and monogamy as oppressive, patriarchal institutions of social control. Moreover, there were not any essays written by young environmentalists, which surprised me, given the enormity of the ecological crisis we are in. Nevertheless, it's encouraging to read essays by activist youth interrogating issues of gender, race, class, disabilty and sexuality. Despite some of its flaws, I highly recommend this book for kids, parents, young adults and progressive youth allies.
Incredible book.......2006-03-16
this book is well-written, well-organized, and very inspiring! it is crucial to bring forward the voice of young people in this day and age, the people who are so often unheard, but who are actually mobilizing to create radical change. i highly recommend that every parent, organizer, teacher, youth, and anyone who interacts with youth read this book.
Young people are the solution and not the problem.......2005-11-16
Our society loves to gush about how 'pro-child' it is. Then it places youth in deplorable situations, and becomes surprised when those youth actually want a better deal out of their life. Even among some adult activists there might be a desire to 'protect' youth by doing community organizing for them as opposed to with them.
This is an anthology of writings by young activists trying to make the world a better place. I am impressed that this collection communicates with both other generations of activists and parents--letting them know that they are going to communicate their politics. Northwestern University Law Professor Bernadine Dohrn (a former member of the Weather Underground) provides an introduction giving her own experience with community organizing, but does not patronize the contributor perspectives.
It also acknowledges that inter-movement politics themselves are not as egalitarian as we sincerely want them to be. Because we have lived under the dominant society, activists also are prone to racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, and ableism despite our wanting to believe that we are automatically above it. Changing the world is impossible when the movement itself is not in order.
Reading their impassioned words took me back to my own burgeoning political consciousness and the frustration I felt at being the only one who 'saw' and cared about issues. A book like this is essential to inspiring youth and letting them know that they are not alone.
I've since found that my best activism comes from my first noticing problems in my own environment. Thus, it's not at all surprising that the youth are tackling the same issues which personally confront them. The best activism comes from something which you feel very strongly about, and it is going to differ among people.
Acknowledging young people's desire and capabilities to make the world a better place is very inspiring. This book is a great pick me up for anybody. It would be especially beneficial for a young activist to read. They are not alone.
Book Description
In this book, Robert Wald provides a coherent, pedagogical introduction to the formulation of quantum field theory in curved spacetime. He begins with a treatment of the ordinary one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator, progresses through the construction of quantum field theory in flat spacetime to possible constructions of quantum field theory in curved spacetime, and, ultimately, to an algebraic formulation of the theory. In his presentation, Wald disentangles essential features of the theory from inessential ones (such as a particle interpretation) and clarifies relationships between various approaches to the formulation of the theory. He also provides a comprehensive, up-to-date account of the Unruh effect, the Hawking effect, and some of its ramifications. In particular, the subject of black hole thermodynamics, which remains an active area of research, is treated in depth.
This book will be accessible to students and researchers who have had introductory courses in general relativity and quantum field theory, and will be of interest to scientists in general relativity and related fields.

Best Book I've Ever Read.......2001-12-04
I am a huge astronomy nerd and I must say that cannot learn well by reading. I have a hard time choosing books which explain things the way I can understand them. That doesnt mean I need things simplified for me, I can understand complicated things much better. Anyway, this book covers topics in the area of stellar birth and death, and black holes. It is an absolute MUST HAVE for a hard core astronomy person such as myself. If only it was written sooner... Im sure there have been changes since 1979... oh well. The book is packed full of knowledge and the author tells the process of starbirth not too slowly or quickly, but just right. Definately the most informative and EASY TO READ astronomy book Ive ever read, hands down.
Any astrology fan should read this........1999-08-30
This book has it all. Wanna know about supernovas, it's in there. How about the complete life cycle of stars? It's in there. And of course there is the title subject, black holes. Provides a very simple yet extremely in-depth theories about relativity and space time.
LEARN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE.......1999-06-15
Learn how the stars were formed, universes are created and the life cycle of a star until IT DIES and: becomes a BLACK HOLE and all time is consequentially WARPED because of this. Is the universe expanding or contracting???? You decide.
Product Description
What are black holes? They may be bridges into other universes or pathways into the past or future. They infinitely warp space and time, allowing nothing to escape: not matter, not even light. They are stellar corpses that have crushed themselves into oblivion, seemingly suspending the traditional laws of physics. The Big bang may have peppered the universe with primordial black holes, as small as protons but as massive as mountains. The universe itself may be disappearing into the final black hole. Black holes (BHs) and their warping effect on spacetime are described, beginning with a discussion on stellar evolution that includes white dwarfs, supernovas and neutron stars. The structure of static, rotating, and electrically charged BHs are considered, as well as the general theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, the Einstein-Rosen bridge, and wormholes in spacetime. Attention is also given to gravitational lenses, various space geometries, quasars, Seyfert galaxies, supermassive black holes, the evaporation and particle emission of BHs, and primordial BHs, including their temperature and lifetime. The author's engrossing, non-technical explanations are enhanced by numerous illustrations.

Description:
I present a viewpoint on black hole thermodynamics according to which the entropy: derives from horizon ''degrees of freedom''; is finite because the deep structure of spacetime is discrete; is ''objective'' thanks to the distinguished coarse graining provided by the horizon; and obeys the second law of thermodynamics precisely because the effective dynamics of the exterior region is not unitary.
