Customer Reviews:
THEROUX IS TOPS !.......2005-05-01
Gifted author, wordsmith, scribe, literary craftsman, all of these describe Massachusetts writer Alexander Theroux. And he proves it in The Primary Colors.
Sometimes eccentric, always entertaining, each of these essays reads like one man's imaginative, magical dialogue. To Theroux, "Blue is a mysterious color, hue of illness and nobility; the rarest color in nature."
It is, of course, also Windex, Blue Willow china, bluegrass, and even baseball player Vida Blue. And, it is the favorite color of the Amish with their blue gates. In the author's gifted hands the color does not limit his discourse, but is a springboard for a trip around the world.
Rather than suggesting age, cowardice or decay, yellow to Theroux is a positive hue - a reminder of the sun, spring, and much of autumn's beauty. This sunny shade is light, perfume and the color of the Cadillac driven by /Sammy Glick in "What Makes Sammy Run."
Calling red the boldest of colors, Theroux writes, "It stands for charity and martyrdom, hell, love, youth, fervor, boasting, sin, and atonement." From Tabasco sauce to rubies to London buses and fezzes, the author's observations regarding crimson are both witty and surprising.
He exaggerates, he's rambunctious; Theroux references everything - art, history, music, psychology, movies, gossip, sociology, and television. All of which make fascinating reading.

art to poetry.......2000-07-21
These essays are a glorious excursion into the depth of color. Each becomes an adventure story combined with poetry. The history and sociology that Mr. Theroux brings into the world of simple RED, BLUE, and YELLOW uplifts and excites. Each paragraph makes you want more and more.

Book Description
The rise of cinema as the predominant American entertainment around the turn of the last century coincided with the migration of hundreds of thousands of African Americans from the South to the urban "land of hope" in the North. This richly illustrated book, discussing many early films and illuminating black urban life in this period, is the first detailed look at the numerous early relationships between African Americans and cinema. It investigates African American migrations onto the screen, into the audience, and behind the camera, showing that African American urban populations and cinema shaped each other in powerful ways.
Focusing on Black film culture in Chicago during the silent era, Migrating to the Movies begins with the earliest cinematic representations of African Americans and concludes with the silent films of Oscar Micheaux and other early "race films" made for Black audiences, discussing some of the extraordinary ways in which African Americans staked their claim in cinema's development as an art and a cultural institution.
Customer Reviews:
For film or Chicago history buffs.......2005-11-28
This book differs from most studies of African Americans and cinema because it ends where others usually begin: with the prolific Oscar Micheaux, who made more than 40 "race" films between 1917 and 1948. Exploring cinema during the "preclassical" era (ie before it became codified and centralized in Hollywood) the author argues that the Great Migration and cinema shaped each other in powerful ways. The study focuses on Chicago's "Black Belt," the birthplace of African American cinema and at the time, a center of thriving black entrepreneurship, entertainment culture and political activism as well as home to country's most widely-regarded race newspaper, The Chicago Defender.
The first section of the book considers how the Great Migration was registered and reflected in dominant cinema, including educational films and travelogues. The second section describes African Americans as spectators and critics. The third section explores how African American filmmakers attempted to comment on cinema and to build and profit from developing black consumer cultures.
I found the first chapter of the book, which establishes the theoretical framework, rather daunting...the author herself calls it "discursive" in the first sentence of the next chapter. But after that point, academics and general readers alike will find this to be a fascinating exploration of early cinema and race relations, with implications still reverberating today. For example, while discussing images of blackness and stereotypes, she notes that when white filmgoers saw a black person carrying a chicken or a watermelon, they knew without further explanation that the item had been stolen. This instantly called to mind media coverage of Hurricane Katrina, when photo captions portrayed black people as "looting" whereas white people were "finding supplies."
The book is generously illustrated with 56 rare film images. I recommend it to anyone interested in film or ethnic studies, but also to anyone interested in Chicago's historic Black Belt.

Book Description
In the spirit of Doyle Brunson's Super System, Arnold Snyder's Blackbelt in Blackjack is an underground gambling classic written by one of the grand masters of blackjack and a legend. This newly revised and updated edition is now made available for the first time to a national audience. This is blackjack as a martial art, targeted for serious and professional players looking to win real money at the game. Snyder reveals tips and tricks used by the pros-shuffle tracking, team play, multiple deck camouflage techniques so that the casino can't detect that the player is using winning techniques, and much more. 21 powerful chapters include a complete course on beating blackjack: the devastating red 7 count, the hi-lo count, the zen count, the true count, and so much more.
Customer Reviews:
excellent book for starters.......2007-03-17
good book written by a great person who had a lifelong experience in counting.
awesome!.......2006-07-05
This book is so informative. I am learning the ins and outs of the game of blackjack. Also, the price was much less that going to the store to buy. It was shipped in a few days and I am very pleased overall.
Excellent Counting Guide.......2005-12-07
Arnold "Church of Blackjack" Snyder is one of the best blackjack writers I've seen. His book takes you from beginning counting strategies up until the advanced ones that will bring you in for the win! This book helped me big time in the casinos, even after I could already play the game.
He even gives good camoflauge advice so the casino won't be able to tell you're counting the cards. I have two editions of this book, the newest one is of course the better but the first was what helped me. I recommend this to anyone who wants to learn a more advanced counting strategy for casino play. It will definitely help you.
Last Chapter - Earning Your Blackbelt.......2005-08-22
The last chapter is worth the whole cost of the book. Read it first, then decide how you want to approach blackjack at Vegas while reading techniques here and from other books.
Best Blackjack Card Counting Guide.......2005-07-11
This is the best card counting guide I have come across! I'm a newer person in the card counting arena and own over 20 books on the subject. The book takes you from the "White Belt" to "Black Belt" level of card counting. The author, Arnold Snyder, is a member of the Blackjack Hall of Fame and his knowledge and expertise on the subject is matched by very few. I highly reccommend this book and wish it was the first book I purchased on the subject of card counting!

Book Description
They were called Easy Company-but their mission was never easy. Immortalized as the Band of Brothers, they suffered 150% casualties while liberating Europe-an unparalleled record of bravery under fire. Dick Winters was their commander-"the best combat leader in World War II" to his men. This is his story-told in his own words for the first time.
On D-Day, Dick Winters parachuted into France and assumed leadership of the Band of Brothers when their commander was killed. He led them through the Battle of the Bulge and into Germany, by which time each member had been wounded. They liberated an S.S. death camp from the horrors of the Holocaust and captured Berchtesgaden, Hitler's alpine retreat. After briefly serving during the Korean War, Winters was a highly successful businessman. Made famous by Stephen Ambrose's book Band of Brothers--and the subsequent award-winning HBO miniseries--he is the object of worldwide adulation.
Beyond Band of Brothers is Winters's memoir-based on his wartime diary-but it also includes his comrades' untold stories. Virtually all this material is being released for the first time. Only Winters was present from the activation of Easy Company until the war's end. Winner of the Distinguished Service Cross, only he could pen this moving tribute to the human spirit.

Must Read for History Buffs.......2007-10-01
Like most people I heard of Easy Company once the miniseries Band of Brothers came out. Major Winters' book is well written and is a fast read. It gives you a lot of information about things that happened in the miniseries that aren't covered in much detail. Additionally, the undertone of the book is about leadership. Who better to learn from than Dick Winters? I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it for anyone who liked the miniseries, read Band of Brothers, or in general enjoys memoirs.
A rehash of BoB book/miniseries.......2007-09-19
90% of this book is just a rehash of the book and miniseries "Band of Brothers", story for story.
The other 10% consists of a number of details from Dick Winters perspective...such as how he joined the Army and became an officer. There are a number of small additions to the stories from his perspective, mostly of "behind the scenes" type additions as to what happened and why. At the end, there is a monologue on leadership. Quite frankly, get this book from your library if you want to read it. I cannot understand why so many people give this such a high rating. If you haven't seen or read "BoB", this book may be unique. For a longtime fan, its disappointing.
A leader of the common man, in his own words.......2007-08-29
You may recall the book by Stephen Ambrose, Band of Brothers : E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, a unit history of E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment from its inception in July 1942 to occupation duty in Austria after the Nazi surrender. Much of the story focused on Richard "Dick" Winters, who rose from Easy Company's 2nd Platoon leader to 2nd Battalion commander over the course of the war. Winter's character was played by Damian Lewis in the TV miniseries Band of Brothers produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg for HBO, arguably the best small screen miniseries ever created.
BEYOND BAND OF BROTHERS (BBB) is the war memoirs of Dick Winters, written with a certain Colonel Cole Kingseed, the nature of whose contribution to the whole goes unexplained in the narrative. But, no matter, really.
BBB essentially follows, and ostensibly embellishes with insider knowledge, the history of Easy Company as outlined in the original book: training at Toccoa, GA and in southern England, the D-Day parachute drop into France, the slog through Holland, the Battle of the Bulge, the discovery of the Buchloe concentration camp, the capture of Berchtesgaden, and the post-surrender occupation duty in Kaprun, Austria.
Even with Kingseed's help, Winters is no Stephen Ambrose. His narrative, aided by a reasonably illustrative photographic section, is business-like and competent but not inspired. A glaring omission is the lack of battlefield maps, which would have been especially helpful for the D-Day, Holland, and Bastogne campaigns. And Winter's makes repeated reference to a mysterious "friend" back in the States, DeEtta Almon, with whom he carries on a sporadic and sometimes awkward correspondence. Is this the "Ethel" he married after returning home? Did I miss something?
BBB is obviously the author's farewell tribute to his comrades-in-arms. As such, he can be forgiven the last couple of chapters which drip with nostalgia. If not now, when? And Winters and his men certainly deserve the written memory.
I served in the Navy for nearly eleven years. I can recall only one superior whom I would've followed to hell and back. (Mike P. at Florida's Blood Center, are you taking note?) Such a leader is rare in military and civilian life. Dick Winters comes across as such. Because of that, I'm awarding BEYOND BAND OF BROTHERS 4 stars and a salute to its author. Honor is due.
"Beyond Band of Brothers" -AudioFile Review mistake.......2007-08-24
AudioFile got it wrong. Damian Lewis played Winters (very well I might add)in the HBO mini series and Tom Hanks co-produced it w/Spielberg. AudioFile must not have watched the HBO show or they wouldn't have got that one wrong in their review. Small potatoes, but geez, who's their fact checker and editor? Further confirms the limited use of a reviews especially by a "critic".
I highly recommend reading Ambroses book then watching the series. I am looking foreword to reading Dick Winters book as soon as I get it in the mail. Cheers. KJM
Band of Brothers Redux.......2007-08-24
An interesting war memoir, but not much new here if you've seen the Band of Brothers series and read the book of the same title.
Winters gives a by the numbers recitation of the who/what/when/where/how of his military service, but not a whole lot about the inner person. I also thought he somewhat tarnished the idea of him I had from the HBO series by making it clear that he did what he did as much out of a competitive spirit of "being the best" than any feeling of service towards his nation. He continually comes off as justifyable connected to and proud of being one of the original men serving in the unit, but also slightly cliquish and even snobbish about "Toccoa men" vs replacements and other soldiers merely doing their duty, many of whom were treated poorly by the former. The way he seemed proud that Toccoa men sat seperately at a table during unit reunions was not something that impressed me. And the replacements who died or were maimed for their country were no less heroic.
Winters was an impressive fighting machine. But a little more machine than man, which is probably what makes it possible to do such a good job of it. He seemed slightly disdainful of those who had more human failings and desires in life (such as having a good time, which he apparently had no interest in whatsoever). The miniseries and band of brothers book made him seem much more warm and human than this book.

Nothing new about Easy Company.......2006-06-28
I have read "Band of Brothers" by Ambrose, "Biggest Brother" by Alexander, and "Beyond Band of Brothers". Beyond Band of Brothers is just a repeat of the exact pages, word for word, as the other two books. The book looks as if it was mainly copy/pasted from the other two for the most part. It is a good book, but if you are looking for more answers to your questions you may have, they are not in this book. I am not trying to take anything away from Mr. Winters, but I was not that impressed with this book. If you are a history and Easy Company fan, then read the book.

Piracy alive and well.......2001-09-15
I was just returing from my second month long trip in Thailand when i picked this book up at Bankok International.
What a great read, I couldn't put it down. The historical facts souronding and leading up to all the events are unbelievable.
Maybe it's my own personal biaists that make this book so likeable, a love for the Thai culture and a historic respect for pirates throughout the ages. I haven't stop thinking about these characters and events since I read this story months ago. In fact, i'm so bummed that I hadn't read this book before I went to Thailand. I would have gone to the Island of Tarutao (now a national park) for a historical visit. I quess the best thing about this book is that it is based on real life events, so much stuff they don't teach you in American High Schools. Neat to hear the flip side of events and stories. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
(I hope this will be a great movie. (It should be if Hollyhype producers don't get a hold of it and change everything) In fact I would love to be in this movie as a extra if there is a way???
Any reason to go back to the land of Buddahs is a great reason.
Fun if you want to learn, not if you want to be entertained........2000-05-23
A lot like a textbook, but if you don't know much about Thailand, this sure would entertain you quite well. The simple language might get in the way a little bit. Then again, being written in a second language for an audience who are not familiar with Thai culture, you've got to give the man a break.
The movie is being made. And now CBS's Survivor is going to this island as their next destination. :)
KJ.......2000-04-11
While I suppose the story is good, the book is written at a seventh grade reading level. Maybe this is okay if English is not your first language (or if you happen to be 13 years old). Should make for a good movie.
Exciting all through the whole book!.......2000-02-25
The book is real intriguing and very exciting to follow till the end. It shows the author's in-depth research and knowledge about what really happened during the World War II in South East Asia, its geography and culture. It is a good mixture between a historical piece and a fiction! A Thai reader can read a Thai version too. Good translation.

Book Description
Since its debut, Policy Paradox has been widely acclaimed as the most accessible policy text available. Unlike most texts, which treat policy analysis and policy making as different enterprises, Policy Paradox demonstrates that "you can't take politics out of analysis." Through a uniquely rich and comprehensive model, this revised edition continues to show how real-world policy grows out of differing ideals, even definitions, of basic societal goals like security, equality, and liberty. The book also demonstrates how these ideals often conflict in policy implementation. In this revised edition, Stone has added a full-length case study as an appendix, taking up the issue of affirmative action. Clear, provocative, and engaging, Policy Paradox conveys the richness of public policy making and analysis.

Good Overview of Public Administration.......2007-07-24
This book gives insight into the decision making process for administrators. It is not the cut and dried process you would think.
A must for those in public service.
A provocative and rewarding examination of policy making.......2007-06-15
Deborah Stone's "Policy Paradox" is an important work in the field of policy analysis. The subtitle is illuminating: "The Art of Political Decision Making." Her takeoff point is the following statement (pages x-xi): "This new field of policy analysis supposedly devoted to improving governance, was based on a profound disgust for the ambiguities and paradoxes of politics. . . . In rational analysis, everything has one and only one meaning." In her own words, she (page xi) ". . .wrote this book to critique the field and to capture, I hope, a more inspiring and humane kind of policy analysis."
Her basic point is that the rational models drawn from economics do not explain very well how policy analysis works. Nor, in her view, should it be the actual model for decision making. She contends that economic rationality often gives way to political reality, to accommodation to conflicting interests, to compromise, to values other than economic efficiency (such as liberty, fairness, and so on).
The introduction opens the book strongly, with Stone noting policy paradoxes, where the economic rational model does not prevail and explain how things work. She argues (page 13) that "each type of policy instrument [e.g., inducements, rules, rights, for example] is a kind of sports arena, each with its peculiar ground rules, within which political conflicts are continued." The first chapter continues the theme, by speaking of the market (economics) and the polis (politics), with a nice table summarizing key points on page 33). She concludes that (page 34) "Problems in the polis are never `solved' in the way that economic needs are met in the market model." Two different realms, and what works in the market may or may not work in the polis.
The book proceeds in three major sections: Part II focuses on broad goals (e.g., equity, efficiency, security, liberty); Part III examines problems (with chapters labeled as follows: symbols, numbers, causes, interests, decisions); Part IV focuses on solutions (or tools or instruments, such as inducements, rules, facts).
In the end, the book examines nicely the tensions between economic rational analysis of policy ideas and the messier but inescapable political process as it addresses policy issues. The reader will be provoked to think about important issues upon encountering Stone's perspective. A very useful work on the bigger picture of policy analysis.
Interesting and Thought-provoking.......2005-10-03
I couldn't help thinking of my past work experience in the government when reading Stone's book. I laughed from time to time as she is so witty in depicting the reality of policy-making.
If you have worked in the policy-making sector, maybe you'll find it a summary of what you did. If you are just about to step into the government, you may put it aside and re-read it sometime later, which will bring you a new and more interesting feeling.
helpful, but unrealistic at times.......2004-11-29
First I'd like to say that Stone's book is good. It is not great though. I find her far to dismissive of many concepts that are the underpinnings of public policy. However, her insight and criticisms on those very same ideas help us think, even if I don't agree with what she is getting at. This is a very good compliment to a strong economics-based public policy book, but read as 'the' textbook for policy studies would be a big mistake.
