Book Description
Vinyl record albums--wow!--they're back. Could it be for the swinging sounds and nightlife nostalgia? Mmmmaybe...but get a load of those covers. Barroom beauties, kittens in Capri pants, seductive sirens--enchantresses everywhere! Vixens of Vinyl: The Alluring Ladies of Vintage Album Covers is a dazzling tour of over a hundred beguiling album covers, designed to appeal to the bachelor audiophiles of the hi-fi era. Such retro luminaries as Martin Denny, Esquivel, Andre Kostelanetz, Perez Prado, and many more draped their record sleeves with women whose charms transcended the strictly musical. Even the decidedly less hip entertainers like Lawrence Welk found they could reach a wolfish new consumer base with a little satin and cleavage. Vixens of Vinyl is a head-turning musical gallery of femmes from a decidedly pre-feminist era. Sure, vinyl is hot again--but the covers are hotter.
Customer Reviews:
Dedicated to the Lost Art of the Cheesecake LP Cover.......2005-04-16
As a little boy, I loved to sift through my dad's LP collection just to gaze upon those incredible album covers. The Martin Denny albums featuring cover model Sandy Warner were among my favorites.
By the way, that IS Sandy Warner on the cover of "Exotic Percussion". She is a woman of a thousand beautiful faces!
The Author Needs to Clean his Glasses..........2004-02-14
...Only a blind person could confuse the beautiful Sandy Warner with the horsey-looking dame on the cover of Martin Denny's "Exotic Percussion!" Invest some of your royalties in an economy size bottle of Windex...
A Disappointment.......2001-06-12
If you're a collector of cheesecake album cover art, I'm afraid that you will find this book disappointing. The dust jacket refers to the author as a collector on these types of covers, but I must say that if this represents his best, he's got a pitiful collection. Most of the covers featured are standard thrift store items like 101 Strings and other pedestrian 60's stuff.
There are virtually no truly collectable albums like Johnnie Mann's "Night", Herb Jeffries' "Say It Isn't So" (with a young Barbara Eden), or the incredible "Speak Low" by Hal Otis (featuring a photo of Jayne Mansfield falling out of an evening dress). Nor are ANY of the most beautiful covers of the 50's highlighted, as it seems Mr. Darling is unaware of the truly beautiful covers of that era (like Hugo Peretti's "And So To Sleep" and George Cates' "Exciting").
Additionally, the book lacks other elements that would have made up for the omission of quality covers: the text is nearly worthless, no dates are given, nor is there any mention of the photographers from the studios of Capitol, Liberty and others who made these otherwise lack-luster recordings fly off the record store shelves. Kudus for the Sandy Warner section though.
The book includes a few (I mean less than 5) truly worthwhile covers and the rest is filler. Even many of the samples used are shelf-worn or damaged. Makes me want to write a book on the subject.
cool little book.......2001-04-14
for the money, this is a cool little book. great layout and design. of course this is only the tip of the iceberg and several more volumes need to follow. better yet, a wopping huge volume with a hefty price tag should be devoted to this subject matter. 50s era george shearing lps (there are a couple in here) alone could fill a chapter. i can picture such a lavish book on my coffee table. if Mr. Darling needs more examples of beautiful, sexy lp covers, i have a bunch. until that book gets made, however, this book is a treat.

Delightful Little Book.......2000-04-12
Eye on Nature: An Elegant Little Guide to Outdoor Photography is exactly that - an elegant, beautifully designed, and compact guide that is full of thoughtful tips on outdoor shooting. Judy Holmes presents a great deal of helpful ideas in a condensed, easy to read book. She herself practices medium format photography but the principles apply as well to 35mm. This is a must for a budding, nature-loving photographer. And the price is right.

This thought-provoking examination of The Matrix explores the technological challenges, religious symbolism, and philosophical dilemmas the film presents. Essays by renowned scientists, technologists, philosophers, scholars, social commentators, and science fiction authors provide engaging and provocative perspectives. Explored in a highly accessible fashion are issues such as the future of artificial intelligence and virtual reality. The symbolism hidden throughout The Matrix and a few glitches in the film are revealed. Discussions include “Finding God in The Matrix,” “The Reality Paradox in The Matrix,” and “Was Cypher Right?: Why We Stay in Our Matrix.” The fascinating issues posed by the film are handled in an intelligent but nonacademic fashion.

Customer Reviews:
Short on Social/Political Commentary.......2006-02-25
I enjoyed this book. But honestly it could have been better. "The Matrix" is a striking film--in my opinion one of the best movies of the decade. To me, the most gripping thing about the movie is the implicit parallel between the unreality of the parasite-controlled Matrix and the commercially-shaped Matrix of our American culture. What the average joe experiences as reality is a false world. It's a created set of impressions that don't match reality very closely, but do serve the commercial interests that foster them. Like the movie Matrix, the parasitic "matrix" of our time exploits us. It extracts our money, time, and energy to its own ends. The essays in this book were good. But the editor seemed to sidestep any serious commercial or political issues. Maybe he was hesitant to take them on. Or maybe he just didn't get it.
Good and Bad.......2004-01-05
This is actually a hard book to review because of the essays beign written by many authors. Basically I give this a three because it does not go into great depth. If you have thought about the Matrix while watching you more than likely have an opinion and thoughts on the subjects they write about, for example - Was Cypher right in wanting to be plugged back in? The good part of this book though is that it is a great introduction to some philosophical concepts if one hasn't taken an intro to philosophy course. It does give the background on where the ideas for this movie came from. If you really like this one or don't like it for that matter read The Matrix and Philosophy. This is a good read that goes into a little more depth than this book seems to do. Although everything I have said is not positive I do not want to discourage you from reading this book.
An amazing look at how the Matrix could indeed be real.......2003-11-26
Every essay in this book will shed new light on the way you view this world. It is so well researched, written, and edited that I'm hard pressed to find another book that I would rate so highly. There are theories presented here that will have you talking to anyone who will listen about the almost unreal possibilities these authors present. They are the top people in their respective fields and were not chosen because they just had cool ideas. They were chosen because they know what they're talking about. I can say this with some authority as one of my good friends is basically 2nd in command at the publishing company. So, do not hesitate to pick up this book and gain unbelievable new insights.
Good read.......2003-11-07
Like another reviewer said, I thought the matrix was deep before I read this book. It really shows you just "how deep the rabbit hole goes."
Worth the read if you're a Matrix fan.......2003-11-01
I'm an admitted Matrix junkie, and having just read this book, it's gotten even worse. If you're a newbie to philosophy, yet are a Matrix fan, get this book. It's mostly in essay form, from various writers/philosphers, and relates sci-fi literature, popular culture, and human perception to the story of The Matrix. Read it, it will open your eyes.

Great Price - Great Book.......2000-08-31
I'm recently trying to improve my guitar skills and this book helps. I like Collective Soul specifically because their music features so much guitar. This book enables you to play with their CD's and sound right on (well almost, depends on skill). It shows the written music and tablature both. I would recommend this book.
Book Description
Twenty years ago, Mike Caro wrote the book on what to look for in a players movements, gestures, and facial expressionstheir tellsto determine if they were bluffing, and it remains one of the bestselling poker books of all time. But what Caro didnt do was teach players how to bluff. Enter Matt Lessinger, a professional poker player and columnist, who in THE BOOK OF BLUFFS shows players how to get their opponents to foldno matter how strong a hand theyve been dealt. Lessinger reveals how, with the correct timing and artistry, bluffing will allow a player to win while holding an inferior handthe very essence of poker.
Customer Reviews:
Very Helpful book! A+++.......2007-07-31
I enjoy reading it, and it helped me a lot. Now I can do more bluffs than ever!
Nothing Special.......2007-03-08
Just tells about a lot of bluffs using examples from actual hands. Problem is I have seen the same situations where it didnt work.
unhappy.......2007-01-07
This book still has not been shipped to me. Thanks for the opportunity to tell folks how pitiful you are. I ordered it several months ago. I think you are supposed to ship it in another month. It is available now at many other places.
GETTING THE FULL GRASP .......2006-11-13

YOU MUST READ THESE BOOKS MORE THAN 1 TIME 2 GRASP ALL OF THE CONTENTS
KINGAR1
The secret is out.......2006-10-18
Applying it is a whole different ballgame. This book just explains different situations when to bluff and how to go about doing it from the image your table sees you as. All pros bluff with timely fashion and this author is giving you a foundation as a pro himself how to do it yourself, all you need is courage. But like everything in life practice!practice!practice! If your a tight player thats sick of getting picked on by Mr bully this is the book to get. Overall I know skill will always outweigh luck in the long run, but it always helps to have every resource at your disposal in every situation and that is a good thing.

Book Description
President Lincoln is so deeply ingrained in our national consciousness that his image can be found practically everywhere (not least on those ubiquitous American pennies). He is the most frequently portrayed American historical figure in the history of the film and television arts, having been featured in well over 150 productions since the birth of the motion picture medium. He has delivered the Gettysburg Address, and on one occasion solemnly urged the title teenagers of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) to "party on, dudes." Lincoln has been portrayed by such diverse actors as Raymond Massey, Walter Huston, Gregory Peck, Jason Robards, Hal Holbrook, and Henry Fonda. The author provides a brief overview of the history of Lincoln film and television portrayals, including documentaries. Then, each Lincoln-related work has an individual entry detailing essential cast, production and release information, as well as a discussion of each work's historical accuracy and artistic merits. The book is fully illustrated with photographs of Lincoln portrayers, dating from the earliest days.

Book Description
In early May 1864 Union armies left their winter encampment near Chattanooga, Tennessee, and began a march to Atlanta. Four months lateron September 3William T. Sherman wired Abraham Lincoln, "Atlanta is ours, and fairly won!" The fall of Atlanta was not just one more Union victory. It was pivotal to the outcome of the entire Civil War and also to Lincoln's reelection. With the fall of Atlanta, Confederate morale plummeted. The South's most significant manufacturing center was destroyed, and its primary railroad connections were cut. The destruction of Atlanta was not just a Union victory over one city, but a key to the end of the war. Fields of Glory traces the story of the campaign from the Tennessee border through the heart of Georgia to Jonesboro. Included is a series of driving tours that enable readers to see firsthand the battlefields and important sites of the campaign. Also included are more than 85 illustrations, 25 original maps, a lively history of! the campaign, fascinating tours of the battlefields, articles on military strategy, biographies of generals, the chronology of key battles and important events, sources for additional travel information, a bibliography, and an index. "In General Sherman's mind," Jim Miles explains, "before the Civil War could be brought to a victorious conclusion, Atlanta had to be destroyed and the Confederacy denied its products. From that day, Atlanta was a doomed city."
Customer Reviews:
The meticulously detailed text traces the path of the war.......2002-11-14
Now in its second edition and part of the outstanding Cumberland House "Civil War Explorer" series, Fields Of Glory by American Civil War expert Jim Miles is an informed and informative study and tour guide of the American Civil War in the west, culminating with the Atlanta campaign of 1864. The meticulously detailed text traces the path of the war, chronicles its skirmishes and battles, and provides detailed directions for a self-guided driving tour that follows the path of history. Black and white photographs illustrate this superbly presented and highly recommended travel resource for an unforgettable journey that recounts the life-and-death saga of nearly a hundred and fifty years ago.
An excellent way to follow Sherman's campaign to Atlanta.......2002-10-27
Finding Civil War related sites in North Georgia is no mean feat, but Miles' book really helps. I was able to see the majority of the most important sites in the Atlanta Campaign on a two day whirlwind car tour by following the route laid out by Fields of Glory. (Although a faithful and through tour following the book would have taken several days at least.) The interpretive background provided about each stop is extremely valuable, and I'm sure many of the sites I visited are not the sort of thing the casual Civil War tourist would ever find unaided. Also, the chapters describing the campaign history are very well written and provide just the right amount of detail. I did find that the (modern) maps in the book were somewhat less than adequate and, in many cases, there are no maps provided for some hard-to-find locations. I spent several hours before my trip printing off online street maps of each of the destinations. Without this prepration I probably would have gotten lost and would have seen a lot less. But, on balance, the book was exactly what I was looking for. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to tour the sites related to the Atlanta Campaign.
Book Description
This is an advanced guide to running political campaigns. It provides invaluable, practical advice from the leading pros in the industry.
Customer Reviews:
Winning Elections.......2007-08-12
This is a great primer for getting into the political landscape as a politician or a consultant for politicians.
Long on common sense short on theory.......2006-11-02
First off, I have to say this is probably a must read for any first time candidate or anyone looking to get into the campaigning end of politics. The book offers common sense advice for almost any issue or scenario you might come up against while campaigning. It also offers sound advice about planning and strategy (mainly- plan and have a strategy!)
I used this text in an undergraduate course on elections, and while it was fun and interesting for students to read, it offer little analysis or theory. It does not spend much time asking why things work or how, just that they do. I suspected that this book would not be all that useful in the classroom and was right, but I am sure it has a place on the campaign trail.
Pretty Good.......2006-06-22
Winning Elections is a compilation of articles that have been assembled by Editor, Ronald Faucheux. As a newcomer to politics I found this book to be especially informative. It is about processes and strategies that campaigns employ. This book, however, is not a beginner's book. It is not about building a campaign, or learning the nuts and bolts of campaigns. It is much more than that. This book is meant to build upon existing skills that successful managers and consultants are doing. In reality, there are not set right or
wrong ways to do anything, but this book serves as a platform for idea sharing.
A Superb Compilation of Articles from C&E Magazine.......2006-05-21
This book is a compilation of practical political advice, originally published as articles in the excellent Campaigns and Elections Magazine, published by the author.
The chapters/articles are organized in a very sensible format, highly accessible, and well labeled for easy reference. It is a work that will be of great practical value to campaign managers and consultants of both major parties as well as third parties. It covers the basics, of course, but also discusses more sophisticated aspects of topics like fundraising, precinct targeting, media strategy, polling, and the like.
Every person serious about political work, especially professionals, should have this book for ready reference for themselves or those they work with. Even though campaign professionals know this subject matter by heart, not all they work with do, especially candidates. I would recommend having it on hand for candidate school, orientation, or simple explanation of what the consultant is trying to convey in advising a candidate or manager.
Excellent Resource for any campaign!.......2005-10-26
This book is an excellent resource for anyone involved in electoral campaigns. I will never regret my purchase. A must read for political activists!
This book is a compilation of years of columns that appear in Campaigns & Elections Magazine. Not quite your "A Guide to Campaigns", but still is full of useful information for any political campaign.

Book Description
With his first book, How to Be a Better Birder, Michael Ketover emerges as an exciting voice in travel writing. Ketover blends the power of observation with global personal experience into an entertaining and provocative mixture of powerful tales.
Ketover focuses on the birds and the joy in their songs amidst disrespect, lunacy, and violence. Maybe the extra attention to birds in his world will make you feel a bit more connected to the simple beauty of birds in your own.
Michael Ketover is married to Kelli. He lives in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, by the Coral Sea.
Customer Reviews:
You won't believe your eyes... I didn't.........2001-03-01
Whether your knowledge of birds is recognizing the vibrant reds of the male cardinal or recognizing the endangered Bali Mynah, this book is for you. It is a book for all ages - there is no age limit in learning about nature and how it should be revered. I'm always impressed when an author can make me laugh and cry when reading his words. The energy that is in these words is undeniable. I was captured, pulled into the pages, and experienced the travels right along side the author. Too often we either are oblivious or choose to ignore the indecencies from around our beautiful and sometimes not so beautiful globe. This book will not let you do that. It is in your face insight to the worlds the author has experienced. You'll be amazed at the restraint he had in certain situations. Restraint I don't think I could have displayed. No matter what level of your awareness, you will walk away after reading this book knowing you've experienced something good. I was moved, and for that I thank the author.
