The Archaelogy of American Wit.......2007-07-30
There was a Golden Era of cartooning in America and it began in the
early '70's with Kliban. Whack Your Porcupine is one of the ends of the
beginning. _Some of the gags are obvious and even a bit silly. The
Intellectual with his head connected to his butt by an electric cord is a
bit pathetic. But No Loitering is the only possible modern take on the
seven ages of man and woman.
But best of all is the title drawing. Whack your Porcupine? how preposterous,
how pefect. We're sure that no porcupines were hurt in making this
cartoon, but we suspect that many presuppositions were done to dark death.
--Lynn Hoffman, author of THE NEW SHORT COURSE IN WINE and
the novel bang BANG. ISBN 9781601640005
I opened it and laughed out loud.......2006-07-09
This collection of cartoons is hilarious. I picked this book up from the table at a garage sale and randomly turned to a page where the caption is "Intellectual." It shows a naked man on his hands and knees with a pipe running directly from his backside to a helmet on his head. He has a goatee and is smoking a pipe. There is a bookshelf containing books with titles like, "The Intellect", "Das Intellect" and "Intellect." I laughed so hard the woman running the sale asked me what I found so funny. Needless to say, I had to buy the book. While the other cartoons didn't quite generate that extreme reaction, I laughed my way through the book. If you are looking for more yuks in your life, then this book will satisfy that craving.
Lifechanging.......2006-06-01
The drawings in this book are lifechanging. I have lived my life based on the lessons I learned from the drawing "Wasted lives and Useful lives", I never have, and never will give a gun to ducks. But most memorable of all is the fact that Angels appear when no one is looking. And why did it appear to a continental car? Why not an American car? How often do angels and saints appear when humans are not around to see them?
Hmmmmmmm. Much to consider. Now, where's that porcupine?
How Can It Be Out of Print?.......2000-12-04
This book is hilarious, and I love to give it as a gift. Why is it out of print? Is the publisher crazy?
...DEADLY HUMOR..........1999-09-05
If you've ever enjoyed cartoon books, a whacked sense of humor, or have a lateral thinking skullcap, you'd better find this outrageous book, one of several I've collected over the years. Unfortunately, ol' Hap is no longer with us, but fortunately, he left a legacy of with that will not soon be seen by our generation.

Searching for the Artist Within.......2002-08-12
This colorful beautifully illustrated book is full of inspiration, not only from Karlyn Holman, but from many other well-know artists, mostly from the Midwest. Each has a story to tell about his or her own experience as an artist and the path to finding their creative center. Along the way there are many wonderful insights into the creative process as well as how-tos for using new and intersting approaches to making art. Karlyn is predominantly a representational watercolorist, but the book moves into the areas of abstract composition, collage and other media as well. I found this book a jump start toward some new approaches in my own work and a feast for the eyes in its lovely illustrations.
Great addition to her first book.......2002-08-09
Karlyn has done it again. This book has
helped me to build my artist skills in other
water media techniques. It is filled with
inspiring ideas and step by step demonstrations.
Very well written and motivating. It has detailed
instructions of other artist and captivating
paintings to veiw of their work.
Especially recommended for watercolor painters.......2002-08-06
Searching For The Artist Within: An Inspirational And Visual Guide For Your Journey Through Watercolor by artist and teacher Karlyn Holman is a beautifully presented, full-color exhibition of a wide variety of remarkable watercolor paintings and painting styles. The reader is offered a wealth of "tips, tricks, and techniques" along with many snippets of advice from the original artists. Searching For The Artist Within is an engaging, inspirational volume especially recommended for watercolor painters of all skill experience levels.
I Love This Book.......2002-07-19
I've been trying to improve my drawing for quite a while...searching for a way to best express my view of the world. In Karlyn's first book, "Watercolor Fun and Free" I was particularly attracted to the on-location drawings. And now, in the second book, there is even more inspiration.
I tried Sara Muender's (one of the artists featured in the book) approach---blind contour drawing with a little "peeking" thrown in---and I feel as if a door has been opened to me. I've done more drawings in the past few days just for the fun of it...getting free of the "shoulds" and all the other baggage I've been carrying around regarding drawing.
Karlyn Holman's books and videos (I have 2 of each) have been so inspiring. More than once they have gotten me back on track to the fun and joy of watercolor painting.
This book contains tons (a very generous number of pages) of helpful and inspirational material, and Karlyn's energy and spirit simply flow out of her books and videos.
I recommend it wholeheartedly.

The Third and most recent edition of The Vampire Film featuring a new chapter, "The Vampire at the Millennium," was released in October 1996 to coincide with the centennial of Stoker's novel Dracula. More vampire films have been produced since the First Edition of The Vampire Film appeared in 1974 than in the entire history of motion pictures prior to that year. The first completely revised and updated edition was published in 1993. The Third Edition, at over 340 pages in length and with well over 200 illustrations, insures that what began as the first book-length study of the subject in 1974 remains the most comprehensive available. The authors, Alain Silver and James Ursini, are continuing their research for future revisions and invite comments from their readers.

This is by far the best vampire film book I have ever read! Combining film analysis with Vampire lore makes for a fun read. Chapters include: "Hammer and the Victorian Pyschology," "Elisabeth Bathory: Still Thirsty After All These Years," and "I Was a Teenage Vampire." Worth Having!
A very fun book!.......1998-12-05
"The Vampire Film" is an astounding reference book for those interested in vampire films. The descriptions of the films are great, including an excellent section on the vampires of Hammer films. The filmography at the book's end is great!

Book Description
This important book investigates the role played by German musicology in buttressing Nazi institutions and ideology. Pamela Potter examines the social, economic, and intellectual factors that caused some German musical scholars to support with such fervor the ideological aims of the Nazis. She argues convincingly that many of the ideas that served the regime not only predated Hitler's rise to power but survived the Nazi period to influence the conception of music history-including that of American musical scholarship-down to the present time. Potter reveals that prominent German musicologists went beyond other scholars in serving the state by publicizing the German musical legacy as a source of national pride; exploring politically relevant research topics, including pseudo-scientific race theories; and participating in the Germanization of occupied and annexed territories during World War II. Nazi leaders recognized musicology's potential service to Nazi causes, says Potter, and musicological ventures enjoyed generous support from the government, party, and SS. Scrutinizing private papers, archives, and rare publications, Potter breaks the silence imposed by the postwar German musicological establishment and demonstrates the extent to which the entire profession was politicized during the Nazi era.

Book Description
The name Hershey evokes many things: chocolate bars, the company town in Pennsylvania, one of America's most recognizable brands. But who was the man behind the name? In this compelling biography, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michael D'Antonio gives us the real-life rags-to-riches story of Milton S. Hershey, a largely uneducated businessman whose idealistic sense of purpose created an immense financial empire, a town, and a legacy that lasts to this day.
Hershey, the son of a minister's daughter and an irresponsible father who deserted the family, began his career inauspiciously when the two candy shops he opened both went bankrupt. Undeterred, he started the Lancaster Caramel Company, which brought him success at last. Eventually he sold his caramel operation and went on to perfect the production process of chocolate to create a stable, consistent bar with a long shelf life...and an American icon was born.
Hershey was more than a successful businessman -- he was a progressive thinker who believed in capitalism as a means to higher goals. He built the world's largest chocolate factory and a utopian village for his workers on a large tract of land in rural Pennsylvania, and used his own fortune to keep his workers employed during the Great Depression. In addition, he secretly willed his fortune to a boys' school and orphanage, both of which now control a vast endowment.
Extensively researched and vividly written, Hershey is the fascinating story of this uniquely American visionary.
Download Description
"This first-ever, major biography of an American icon paints a vivid picture of what Milton S. Hershey accomplished as the ultimate progressive businessman. Hershey's life suggests a kind of capitalism that seems warmer, and more personal. He was a gambler, raconteur, despot, and servant. And he stands as a rare, and perhaps unique, example of ambition, altruism, ego, and humility.

Hershey:, the legend and the man.......2007-06-15
Michael D'Antonio has given us a serious biography of a complicated, but highly admirable, man. A "chocolate king" who founded a town and created and endowed schools and home for orphans is not a figure to be treated lightly, and D'Antonio does not fail. While there is no question that D'Antonio likes his subject, Hershey is not given a free pass. His enormous philanthropy is described right alongside irrational temper tantrums and firings. Spying on worker's drinking habits is described alongside his own gambling habits. The rise of the Hersey empire, and the town he founded, is described in great detail. The book opens with the drama of a challenge to the Trust of his school for orphans and the reality of business in this day and age. "What would Milton do?" is the question. What the book tells us is that it is by no means certain what Milton would do. He had contemplated selling his empire at more than one point, ensuring the resources for the continued care of the orphans in his charge. We see the rise and life of the Hershey empire, and Milton's relationships with others. The possibility of the true nature of his wife's illness is mentioned and described. Some have been offended by this, I'd suggest they get over it. It has no bearing on what type of person she was, or how much he loved her. We see the evolution of the business, the international interests, the town and school. It is a satisfying read. The only additional material I would have liked is some more description of Hershey's interactions with some of the other business and political leaders of the day. We are told of a feud with Wrigley, and the suspicion that Wrigley had cheated in gambling, but little else. We know of TR's trust busting, and that Hershey was considered to be quite apart from the Robber Barons of the day. Did TR and Hershey ever interact beyond the one or two mentioned invitations? If so, how? This historical information may not exist in the archives, but was the only gap I felt while reading.
As Good as Chocolate.......2007-05-25
"This book is almost as good as the chocolate bar. This biography of Milton S. Hershey and the chocolate company shows how hard work, ingenuity, and just plain luck produced the world's largest chocolate factory. The only thing that would have made this book better would have been a free sample of the product."
A truly sweet biography of the chocolate king.......2007-04-03
Michael D' Antonio has written a wonderful biography of Milton S. Hershey, the man who became a multi-millionaire by making milk chocolate a five-cent treat in the United States.
Very much to his credit, D' Antonio delivers a biography of a complex man from another era without super-imposing contemporary politically correct value judgments. D' Antonio deserves a gold star or two for that.
Milton Hershey's life is not an easy one to document; he was not an overtly public man. Rather, he led two lives. The first as reservd tycoon in his native Pennsylvania locale, the other as a a sometimes free-spending bon vivant traveling the United States, Europe and Cuba.
D' Antonio chronicles Hershey's beginnings with his stern, no-nonsense mother with her Mennonite background and Milton's dreamy, never successful father. Backed with the unwavering faith of his mother and aunt and funds from his extended family, Milton pursued a career in confectionary. One business failure followed another, but Milton's faith in himself never faltered. Then he discovered caramels - and became the caramel king. Working with clearly limited resources, D' Antonio weaves an interesting story of an interesting man that becomes still more interesting when Hershey sees that the caramel market is limited.
He sells out and could have easily retired to a life of luxurious ease.
He had surprised everyone and married Catherine Sweeney, some fifteen years younger, whose actual background remains a mystery. She may, according to some, have been a "working girl".
Though rich, Hershey pursued the dream of creating an inexpensive milk chocolate candy - and through native ingenuity and peristence succeeded. He built a multi-million dollar business that at one time controlled more than 90% of the U.S. market.
The story of Hershey is fascinating. He built a town, Hershey PA, incorporating his utopian beliefs - and it worked. He created a sugar empire in Cuba that almost bankrupted him. He set up a unique orphanage and then endowed it with all his wealth. He was a mercurial man who could fire long-time employees in a moment of pique. He overlooked the failings of favorites.
But no one (except perhaps some left-wing academics) could call Hershey a bad man. Almost alone among the mega-rich of the era, Hershey was animated by a true humanism and D' Antonio fully describes this without turning Hershey into a saint.
Hershey is an exceptional biography. It describes an American original, Milton S. Hershey, a self-made man who shared himself with his workers, his community and his nation. Quite a guy and he has found himself in the hands of a very competent biographer.
Jerry
Fair and balanced, but not particularly interesting.......2007-02-07
The book provides a good description of Milton Hershey's life - his early struggles, his later success, the Cuban sugar business, his generosity and the building of the community in Pennsylvania and his relationship with it. Unfortunately, Hershey gave few interviews and wrote little so everything is one step removed and heavily filtered by the Hershey public relations machine. The author does a good job trying to dig for details and paint a balanced picture, but in the end the picture of Milton Hersey is blurry and the story is not engaging.
Read like a good candy should.......2007-02-05
I enjoyed this book. It isn't what you'd call an intense read, or even a deep one; instead, I'd descibe it as pleasant. Milton Hershey really was a good man. He was ambitious, and used what he obtained from his hard work both for his own pleasure, and to make his community better. A great example of the virtues of capitalism.
D'Antonio does a delightful job in describing the city of Hershey, as well as the Hershey school. Both tributes to Milton Hershey, the industrial giant and philanthropoist.
Book Description
The book affords a brief discussion of the role of U.S. aerial mercenaries from the early 20th century to the Spanish Civil War. Aside from its primary purpose as a study of the motivation and commitment of the U.S. aviators in the Spanish Civil War, the work chronicles the events leading to the outbreak of hostilities in Spain and the arrival of the foreign volunteers; the combat roles of Frank Tinker and his American comrades from January to July 1937; Tinker's return to the United States in August 1937 and a concise discussion of the remainder of the conflict; Tinker's suicide in Little Rock, Arkansas in June 1939; and a final review of the post-war careers of his squadronmates.
Customer Reviews:
If you are into the SCW, then it is worth getting........1999-09-10
The first few chapters had me worried about where the book was going. These chapters contains the background to the war which is common knowledge to most SCW buffs. Chapter four gets to the stuff you would expect from the book and my opinion turned positive. The lives, missions and interactions are described very well and the story becomes more interesting as it goes on. This book gave me a better appreciation of the Republican Airwar during their hey-day and the tight relation between the Americans in the "La Patrulla Americana". It is a small book with only 150 pages and generally pulls together information into one source. I found it a very quick read and a good addition to my SCW collection. I rate it 3 stars due to the VERY high price.

Author Nailed It.......2006-06-14
I worked in Liberia for a year and could tell some of the same stories. Utter corruption at every level coupled with the average government fuctionary's well developed sense of his/her own importance makes dealing with them something that would lead Mother Teresa to drink. As the book makes clear, the state exists to serve the "elite", i.e. the gangsters. The author puts in all down in facinating detail. Haven't seen another book that captures what's wrong in Africa with such insight. Since the book was published Equatorial Guinea, the country that's the focus of the book, has come into a lot of oil wealth. The money has all disappeared into various off shore accounts owned by the gangsters in charge without benefiting the people one iota. Nothing ever changes.
excellent book.......2005-08-02
engaging and informative. a must for those interested in economic rehabilitation of west african countries.
very insightful.......2005-03-26
(Memoir) Account of author's work as leader of
a World Bank project in Equatorial Guinea in
1987. Klitgaard provides a nice mix of stories
about day-to-day life anecdotes and how the
World Bank interacts with ministers of
government. He's also a very "groovy" guy,
jamming on the guitar with local pop stars and
continually searching for good waves.
Potentially offensive material: nothing serious
The author as Foreign Aid Surfer Dude.......2005-02-25
What initially attracted me to Tropical Gangsters was surfing. As a surfer working at the time for AusAID, Australia's government foreign aid agency, I was fascinated by Robert Klitgaard as Foreign Aid Surfer Dude. He surfed and worked in Equatorial Guinea, paralleling a particular dream of mine, which I eventually played out in the Pacific. But his book goes much further than simply surfing the Third World: it gives a quirky and realistic picture of the difficulties (and joys) of working in a developing country. Unlike most books on development, it is a personal testament from someone who's been there and done that, and which makes an engaging read. Highly recommended.
A highly informative and unique book.......2003-04-18
It is not very common to find a World Bank economist who writes with a touch of humor, humility and eloquence, but that is exactly what you will discover in this unique book. The author was a World Bank advisor assigned to the tiny African nation of Equatorial Guinea in the late 1980's, a time when many African nations were beginning to flirt with market reforms and economic liberalization. This book is kind of like a personal diary of the time he spent there. It is written in an easygoing, informal style. He alternates between discussing his job- trying to develop an economic strategy that will enable E. Guinea to qualify for a World Bank loan- and discussing his recreational activities, which range from surfboarding to hanging out with African rock stars. He introduces us to many people- government officials, "experts" from the UN and other international organizations, and ordinary Equatoguineans. He seems to be particularly critical of the so-called "experts," many of whom are in this remote backwater merely because "they couldn't find jobs in their own countries." Many economists and other academics seeking a rigorous, theoretical analysis of African political economy might be frustrated by this informal style, but I think it adds an extra dimension to the story of economic reform in the third world. It helps remind us that these structural adjustment policies thought up in Washington D.C. are implement by real people facing real constraints in recipient countries. Klitgaard does an excellent job of relating the pressures faced by well-intentioned (and some not so well-intentioned) government ministers, as they must deal with corruption, apathetic bureaucrats, nasty military officers, and the poor infrastructure found in every developing country. All in all, this is a great read for anybody interested in the troubles facing third-world countries, for anyone curious about why these countries can't seem to get out of their economic malaise. Although it was written in 1991, it seems just as relevant today as it did when it was written.
