Book Description
Since prehistoric times, furs and feathers have been used not only for warmth and protection but also for display and adornment. Offering lively insights into the decorative possibilities of pelts and plumes, WILD: Fashion Untamed examines fur’s ability to announce the wealth and status of the wearer by looking at the clothing of Renaissance aristocrats as well as that of contemporary Hip-Hop performers such as P. Diddy and Missy Elliott.
WILD also examines how pelts and plumes have come to define ideals of femininity by quoting the physical and sexual characteristics of birds and beasts. Examples include an unprecedented array of designs by Azzedine Alaïa, Roberto Cavalli, Dolce and Gabbana, John Galliano for Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, Thierry Mugler, and Yohji Yamamoto. The book also features fantastical feathered costumes of Las Vegas showgirls and coquettish “birds of paradise” creations by milliners Stephen Jones and Philip Treacy.
Lavishly illustrated and entertainingly written, WILD reveals how faunal apparel, whether in the form of pelts, plumes, prints, or animal symbolism, has represented and will continue to represent one of man’s more primal instincts.

Book Description
What do words have to do with the world? Do our concepts "make" the world the way it is for us? If concepts do "make" the world what it is for us, is this "making" complete, without residue of a natural world, and how does this "making" occur? Is there a real world to which word and concepts refer that anchors their meaning? What is the role of the imagination in making words have meaning? Is understanding embodied, conceptual, or both? "A Modest Realism" explores these questions through its examination of the foundations of articulatable experience. It joins language and experience in a non-essentialist realism, while avoiding the non sequiturs and practical impossibilities of most twentieth century postmodern philosophers.

If yr a huge fan . . ........2004-02-10
than you would be kicking yrself 4 not buying it. Granted it's small but if you are a diehard fan, than it is totally worth it. You won't regret it. It has different artwork, not seen in Hell Babies. Sure it's not the same, or as proflic, but worth its cost.
Kinda skimpy.......2003-08-09
Ok, if you're going to shell out the money for this book (it is REALLY small - check out the dimensions! It's smaller than a CD!), you'd be better off investing in Hell Babies. Granted, some of the artwork in this book is not in HB, but the miniscule size hardly makes it worth purchasing. HB, on the other hand, has a great pink rubber cover and good-sized artwork. With the CF, you definitely miss out on the wicked-weird tiny details that make her art pop.
Book Description
Explains the processes of developing, pitching, and submitting stories. Helpful for screenwriters at the start of their career.......2007-05-19
An industry veteran of 25 years, Kathie Fong Yoneda is both a story analyst at Paramount and a script consultant. Her background as a development executive gives her an excellent perspective for helping screenwriters can break down the gates to Hollywood. And this book aims to do just that.
The book is divided into four major parts: working on the script, meetings and pitches, submissions and relationships. It is a very clearly structured guide to the do's and don'ts for writers looking for their breakthrough (hint: the first step is to WRITE A GREAT SCRIPT!).
Yonada includes advice on how to behave towards executives, how to find an agent, the special vocabulary used in Hollywood, how to start a writers group, even how to prepare for a conference. All of this is written in a clear manner, making the book a very useful reference.
The downside to this is that most of this information is out there already. If you read screenwriting magazines and keep up with recent books on the business side of screenwriting, there will be very little here you don't know already. Moreover, the book is very "pro-system" -- there is no criticism of the way things are done, and the advice is very much "mainstream" common knowledge.
I don't think this book has very much to offer veteran writers who are already well acquainted with the vagaries of getting their scripts through the Hollywood maze. For writers who are starting out, however, the book will serve very well to inform them about the basics of getting your script sold to Hollywood.
The Best Book You will Ever Read About selling your sscreenplay.......2006-09-13
After writing my first screenplay, I was stuck on how to sell it. I have ran my own business for over tens years and have a natural flare for marketing - thinking that selling a script would be commonsense WRONG! After reading The Script Selling Game I was blown away by the fantastic real life tips and jargon given. It's motivated me more than ever to see my projects on the silver screen. IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT breaking into Hollywood - You MUST BUY THIS BOOK! It's easy-to-read and only an insider would know how to write it's contents.
Something For Everyone!.......2006-09-05
I loved this little book! Not only was it a quick read, but it was also filled with a variety of solidly helpful information for new and experienced screenwriters. I found the "10 Point Checklist for Completed Scripts", the "Big Eight" and the section on pitching particularly useful and now put the information to use on every project. The book is certainly worth more than you pay for it!!
Duane Kulikowsky.......2005-10-10
The book never forgot who was reading it. If you are at a point in your career where you need guidance in what to do and what's important, this book offers you that. Kathie Yoneda, I feel, just got the balance right between fact, figures and emotion. Kathie actually cares.
If it's Tuesday, it must be Warner Brothers...........2005-08-13
The Script-Selling Game is your "Biedecker's", your "Fodor's", or your "Lonely Planet" guide to the exotic, exciting, sometimes confusing, sometimes dangerous yet ultimately rewarding territory of Hollywood Script Sales.
Kathie Fong Yoneda has not only explored this territory, she has actually carved out, tamed, and settled a lot of it in her years as a studio executive. Her expertise in the special jargon, the specific tools, and the appropriate approaches will help you craft an effective presentation of your unique creative project, be it a feature film, a TV series, or any other media production.
Read Kathie's book. Smile, frown, gasp.... Yes, Hollywood can be just as she says. It's a closed world unless you have an interpreter and a guidebook. Thank goodness hers is accessible, informative, specific, and comforting. Well then, follow her guidelines, learn to speak the language, do the currency exchange from creativity-to-commerciality, and watch the barriers go down and the doors open up for you.

Great Book.......2006-11-08
I used this book when homeschooling my son many years ago. I just bought it for my sister who will be homeschooling her daughter this coming year. It is a great way to "make your own" curriculum and very inexpensive too! Great ideas using simple material that help kids learn; in 10 minutes and fun for them. I highly recommend this book as well as all of Peggy Kaye's Learning books.
Education Yourself while You Educate Your Kids.......2006-07-14
This book is a real find. It is full of inventive and fun little games that teach skills needed for reading and math in such a way that children have so much fun they don't even realize they are learning. Kaye introduces each game with a description of the student and the learning problem she designed it for, and there is a key next to each game with suggested grade levels, both of which help the reader to pick out the best games for their kids or students. She aslo explains what each game teaches.
I bought the book because my daughter was having some trouble with reading and math in Kindergarten. I've tried out a few games and she enjoyes them while it provides us with quality time together. I've also learned from the directions some key tools for how to approach children and learning tasks so that they feel like fun, not a task, for example, Kaye recommends that we play the games with the child, taking turns and participating equally. The book has also helped me to understand where my daughter is coming from at the age of five, what kinds of developmental issues are common, and how to recognize where learning is occurring. Though I'm a college professor, I didn't have a clue how to teach a child or what was age-appropriate. So, the book not only helps me educate my daughter, but it is educating me about teaching and learning, and the games are easy to fit into a busy schedule.
Best book of its kind........2001-09-01
The parenting section of my local bookstore contains several shelves of workbooks designed for parents who want to help their kids with schoolwork. The books are nothing more than page after depressing page of the same dull exercises most kids get plenty of already in school. I assume they must be selling well, or the store would not order so many of them. But looking at those workbooks makes me want to cry. I think it is wonderful that parents want to help their children do well in school, but the parents who buy those books are getting cheated (and so are their children). The last thing kids who are struggling need is more worksheets. And they are even less useful for kids who are ahead of the curriculum and need more challenges.
The games in this book provide an antidote to the worksheet pushers. I am a huge fan of Peggy Kaye's books (She has three more in this series: Games for Reading, Games for Writing, and Games for Math, and all of them are excellent). Whether you are trying to find a way to help a child who is behind in a certain subject or skill, or looking for challenges for a kid who is ahead, this book has some fun ways to help. The best thing is that she has several games for every skill, because she recognizes that children like different things and learn in different ways. So if a game for a skill you are working on falls flat with your child, there are plenty more to try. A few of the games require a little investment of your time, like making playing cards or game boards, but a lot you can do without any advance preparation, and several are so no-fuss they are perfect for car trips, or time spent in a waiting room.
This is a first rate book, the best of its kind by far.
Helpful, FUN book!.......2001-07-28
Whether you are tutoring, a classroom teacher, homeschooling, or a parent you will find this, and Kaye's other books, chock-full of great ideas to enhance learning. The best part is how FUN these activities are and how easy she has made it for you to implement them with any child.
Best book of this type I've read in 16 years of parenting!.......1999-01-27
I'm a very busy mom of four kids. I've read lots of this type of books and ususally came away feeling like a failure for not doing all of those complicated or time consuming activities to help my children. This book is GREAT! The activities are quick and easy and require few materials. (usually pencil and paper, cards, dice etc.) This are also quick distractors for in the car, at church or while stuck in a waiting room. If you only buy one book, buy this one!

The formula sounds immediately intriguing: a 65-year-old, hard-charging executive with old-fashioned values conducts a dialogue with his 35-year-old, Zen-influenced son about what qualities define great leadership. One's a Republican, the other independent. One drives an Audi, the other a Subaru. One likes his vacations best when they involve golf in Scottsdale, while the other prefers backcountry roams in Yellowstone. Yet together, they aim to develop a common picture of the essence of leadership--agreement on what characterizes those special people that others follow--and in this engagingly written, disarmingly personal book, they do.
Co-authors Sander Flaum and his son, Jonathon Flaum, are products of different eras, and the inter-generational tension that runs through their book gives it its unique flavor. Father and son's voices alternate in The 100-Mile Walk, with the elder, Sander, typically writing first, and Jonathon presenting his own opinions next. Each shows the different influences of his generation in their exchanges about various aspects of leadership.
Sander grew up in Brooklyn, heavily influenced by the surrounding Jewish community. Inspired by a demanding, determined mother, he worked his way up a conventional career ladder, beginning at a large pharmaceutical company and then moving onto an ad agency. He displays and extols traditional virtues like hard work, determination, ambition, and the like. His son Jonathon, meanwhile, has a markedly more new-fashioned orientation, having gotten an MFA degree rather than an MBA, and referring repeatedly in the book to teachings of Zen masters. After a brief career in the arts, primarily as a playwright, Jonathon has become an executive coach with surprisingly starchy, button-downed clients.
As their backgrounds suggest, where father and son come together makes for interesting reading. The "walk" to which the book's title refers is actually a series of strolls, adding up to 100 miles, that father and son take together. In their jaunts through Manhattan; Asheville, North Carolina; New Orleans; and Columbus, Ohio, Sander and Jonathon discuss what eventually become 9 key qualities that they believe most good leaders exhibit. The 9 P's, as they refer to them, are: people, purpose, passion, performance, persistence, perspective, paranoia, principles, and practice.
The book's structure revolves around these 9 qualities, as Sander and Jonathon discuss each in turn, weave in anecdotal examples from real-life organizational leaders. The chapters then close with checklist summaries of key things for readers to remember. The lessons themselves aren't revolutionary; what's different is the thoughtful, at times intimate dialogue between a father and son, and what others might draw from it. Former astronaut and Senator John Glenn, lauds the Flaums' open, questioning tone, and their lack of dogmatism, in his Foreword: "this book does not presume answers; it asks probing questions." Those questions are indeed provocative ones, and readers ready to take an unusual walk with the Flaums will be well rewarded. --Peter Han
Book Description
Each generation leads in its own way. But to progress together, they must find ways to bridge the divide between their perspectives. Recognizing that truth, a 65-year-old traditional CEO and his 35-year-old Zen entrepreneur son embark on a six-month-long, 100-mile walk.
As they stroll the streets of New York and New Orleans, trek through the Blue Ridge Mountains, and hike along the Long Island coast, they talk about their experiences, their outlook on life and work, the achievements of leaders they have known, and how each views the nature and purpose of leadership.
Ultimately, the two men agree on nine key traits and practices essential to all leaders -- from principles and passion to performance and even paranoia -- and on how leaders and aspiring leaders can follow them consistently. Father and son also discover a lot about each other, their relationship, and the way two generations set apart by so many differences can respect and learn from each other.
Customer Reviews:
The 100-mile Walk: A Father And Son on a Quest to Find the Essence of Leadership.......2007-07-16
The 100-Mile Walk contains a rather unique look at successful business. The authors are father and son with some very different views on these aspects. Sander, the father, thinks of business in a traditional Baby Boomer way. He has become an extremely successful business person by gradually climbing the cooperate ladder, making career his number one priority, and long hours of sacrifice. His son, Jonathan, is also a highly successful business person. However, this generation X-er's views on business on quite different from his father's. Jonathan believes that a healthy balance between a career he loves and a life outside of work allows him full use of his creative abilities that will ultimately lead to his success.
This book illustrates that the definitions of leadership and business success are changing. Once men spend much of their lives isolated from their families so that they could provide a financially comfortable living. Today, many individuals sacrifice that security to spend time with their family and friends. The 100-Mile Walk shows that there is value in both career paths and that individuals following either path can learn from the other.
Unusual approach to leadership books.......2007-01-21
I was pleasantly surprised at the different approachs to leadership shown by this father and son. This book reinforces the fact that things are changing in every aspect of our society. The older way of looking at the busines world suddenly seems lifeless and harsh even though the younger approach seems a bit naive. Perhaps, as usual, a blend of the two opposing ideas would be best.
Plenty of ideas to chew on.......2006-03-10
Even though, as the authors state at the beginning, there are 250 books on leadership published every year, there don't seem to be many books on follower-ship, even though followers far outnumber leaders in this world. For followers, this book is quite effective as a wish list of ideal personality traits and management techniques by which they can gauge the effectiveness of their own leaders. Jonathon Flaum's sections are also useful for older employees who need to understand the values and perspectives of their younger supervisors.
The 100 Mile Walk.......2006-03-09
A very good book on leadership. I liked the comparison of the two ages of the authors. They broke down leadership in a way that could be understood. I will probably re-read the book again.
Top Shelf Business Book.......2006-02-10
Among the 25-30 business books that I read each year, only one or two stand out with unique insights that warrant "top shelf" billing. The 100-Mile Walk is one of those projects that rises above typical business publications by embedding both intelligent point/counter-point discussions and practical leadership stories from both traditional and new-style leader perspectives. Several of the authors' suggestions have proven useful in my own leadership practice as well as my work in guiding and developing Gen-X leaders. I recommended it highly to anyone seeking to understand the common DNA of leadership that transcends age, culture or personal style. This walk of self-discovery with Sander and Jonathan Flaum is a journey worth taking and sharing with others.

Wanda, a married mother of an 18 month old.......2006-01-12
After reading the different stories in "Where are our Fathers?"; I now have a clearer understanding of the different obstacles that single moms have to overcome. This book gives a sense of hope; a light at the end of the tunnel. I know that women tend to get very weary but don't give up the fight continue through all of your struggles because JOY comes in the morning.
Single Mothers Tribute - NYC.......2005-05-19
Quite refreshing. This book expresses the struggles of the single mom from a realistic view. It also sends a respectful cry
out to fathers who do not participate in the lives of their children.
A Very Nice Read..

From the supplier: The interview reiterates the idea of black spirituality as based on strife and struggle and is expressed through black music. The black spiritual music has expressed the need of oppressed people the world over for freedom and salvation. Thus, its universality makes it the deepest liberation theology.

"Jeffrey St. Clair is the Seymour Hersh of environmental journalism."-Josh Frank
From the F-22 fighter jet and B-2 bomber to the Stryker tank and Star Wars, Grand Theft Pentagon chronicles how the Pentagon shells out billions to politically wired arms contractors for weapons that don't work for use against an enemy that no longer exists. St. Clair shows how many of the biggest arms contracts were literally inside jobs, negotiated by Pentagon generals who later went to work for the very same corporations that were awarded the contracts.
The co-founder of Counterpunch and author of Been Brown So Long It Looked Like Green to Me: The Politics of Nature,
Jeffrey St. Clair lives in Portland, Oregon.

Grand Theft Pentagon .......2007-10-17
This is a book all Americans should read but will not. America has stopped reading and all they do is watch managed television and get lies every day that deludes them into zombies. This book for me was another revelation that our government has seduced us again by squandering billions apon billions of dollars they do not have to wage wars worldwide. These facts will never be presented on televison so it will reach few readers and America will continue to plunder the world to feed the fat cats that rule us!
Every American Should Read This Book!.......2007-09-13
If it bothers you that half of every discretionary tax dollar goes to the military in some form or another (DOE, NSA, off-budget "black programs", etc. etc.) or that we spend more on defense and security than the rest of the world combined, then read this book! It's a phrase that is often overused, but this is definitely "a book every American should read." As a southerner originally from a very hawkish, pro-military state who thought that high military spending was necessary for jobs and community growth as well as security, this made my blood boil. We are essentially accomplishing none of those things--as evidenced by the fact that the world's most expensive military can't defeat small third-world countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan devastated by 20+ years of war and/or sanctions. Ever wonder why? The authors make clear that the level of the combined pentagon/congressional/corporate corruption not only puts the mafia to shame, but is threatening our democracy and our national security in very profound and frightening ways. Read this and prepare to be outraged. Perhaps this will spur action ensuring that enlisted servicemen and women will no longer need welfare to make ends meet while billions are funneled to defense contractors? My only complaint is the horrendous job of proofreading and copy-editing this book received (none?). Otherwise, this deserves to be on the bestseller list.
Grand Theft Pentagon.......2007-03-10
Full to the brim with tasty tidbits of pentagon waste and corruption. A great read.
It must have gone to press in a hurry as it has many typo's.
Each chapter appears to be simply a transposed magazine article.
delightful.......2007-03-09
snappy prose, compelling evidence, one of the great muckrakers.
the people who imply that the book is written by a knee jerk pacifist have not been paying attention. The article on the Warthog, and others demonstrated not only the man's opposition to waste and corruption, but the fact that the man genuinely cares about having a functioning military for DEFENSE purposes.
The points he raise cannot be simply dismissed out of hand, why keep spending so much money on cold war era weapons when our old enemy no longer exists/
How helpful - Socialist advice on Defense Contracting.......2006-04-11
It is interesting to note that the most ardent support of this book is by people who:
A. Don't really want the US to have any defenses, or,
B. Support a political system that has been proven useless in creating a defense infrastructure, or,
C. Both
The two best examples of the socialist system's results are the UK and France. Things were bad in the UK before Thatcher sold off nationally owned defense firms (now the UK competes in the US market very well, before their systems were mostly junk). Some French firms can't sell their systems to anyone unless they ignore international arms laws, provide financing, and/or twist arms (pun intended). The point is that our system produces, on average better products, at less cost to the taxpayer. For example, MRE's are purchased all over the world as a consumer product and by NGO's - proof that our system generates products that can compete for customers.
The fact is that the defense market is huge, and there are a few bad people in who try to take criminal advantage of it. As a result, we prosecute and convict people from time to time, and in the past few years, that has included people who were senior folks in the Clinton administration, and more recently a Republican congressman. The FBI and others have standing task forces to ferret out the felons.
Go back and read real muckraker works like Upton Sinclair's The Jungle (1906). Don't settle for a cheap imitation like this one.
