Book Description

Believing that strong feelings make for strong art, this insightful book shows painters how to scratch the surface of their unconscious to generate powerful emotions that unleash more meaningful work.

The author encourages readers to tap into childhood memories and other aspects of the inner self as revealed in animals, self-portraiture, and real or imagined landscapes. Using this approach, plus the fluid properties of the watercolor medium as it drips, forms puddles, and responds to every stroke of the brush, the reader develops paintings from the inside, with inner life as the model, and from the outside, with nature as the model.

2 out of 5 stars A guide on what to paint.......2005-05-20

"A Passion for Watercolor: Painting the Inner Experience" is written by a psychologist who is a watercolor artist. The focus of this book is to encourage the reader to broaden their horizons on the topic of what to paint. Guidance on technique is very thin -- almost nonexistent -- and this is fine, as there are many other books out there on this topic. Rather, the author focuses on the process of creative interpretation: discover what you like to paint, what that means to you, how to express your feelings visually, and so forth. There is a lot in this book on using introspection to develop topics for art. Each chapter begins (about 1/2 content) with the author's thoughts on the topic -- say, what fruit means to her, and how she brings that out in art -- and then suggests approaches & loosely worded projects you might use.

If you enjoy self examination, you will probably adore this watercolor book's fresh aproach. For myself, I just didn't get it.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential to vision and creativity.......2004-09-24

This is an unusual watercolor book in that there are no daisies or nice little postcards, how "this is how you hold your brush" or other practical instruction. This is all about capturing the inner vision and feeling and translating it into paint on paper. After I read this book, I thought about, well, nothing in particular, but I went and did a picture inspired by a market I visited in Bombay. I didn't use pencil to sketch, just put brush to paper and got several paintings that were the best I ever did. Something in this book made a secret part of my brush and paint handling "click" and even though I didn't like the author's painting style (!) I gained some kind of new ability from his text and examples of his sketches. If nothing else, this book will teach you to doodle profitably to advance your technique and artistic sense. Highly recommended.

we thought we were buying this book for our baby so she can experience some yiddish while we read her a 'classic'...but we found ourselves laughing out loud as we began to read.
our 90 year old mother kept reading the book out loud and commenting on the text.
we had so much fun with it we ended up buying another for a gift for our friend.
it's not alot of substance, but it certainly is a fun read.
probably best if not read to the little ones though as it has some pretty tough topics such as grandma falling down and ending up in hospital etc.

        5 out of 5 stars a must read.......2006-10-15

I must say, we had a real laugh over this hilarious book. Davilman and Weiner have a wry wit, and it was not wasted on our household. We are still laughing about this book, and its funny sequel Yiddish with George and Laura.

            Book Description

The Lure of the Vampire: Gender, Fiction and Fandom from Bram Stoker to Buffy the Vampire Slayer explores the curiosity and fascination surrounding the enduring myth of Dracula and vampires. Over one hundred years after Bram Stoker's influential novel was published, an interest in vampires is still prevalent in popular culture. This is suggested by the recent popularity of such television shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and it's spin-off, Angel. Milly Williamson examines this phenomena and looks at the issues of gender pertaining to both vampires and their followers, the modern portrayal of vampires, the nature of identity and identification, and the fans themselves.

4 out of 5 stars A great analysis of vampire fandom (as long as you're a scholar).......2006-02-08

The Lure of the Vampire is, as the title suggests, a book about vampires. However, it's not about vampires per se, but rather an analysis of people who admire vampires and everything they stand for, people who have meticulously read every single book by Anne Rice about Louis and Lestat and her other characters, and who live their daily lives closely identifying and relating to the vampire worldview. In other words; hard-core vampire fans. True, some of them have more of a casual interest, while others more or less base their entire worldview, existence, and philosophy on the mythology about those pale, immortal beings who only live at night and drink blood whenever the thirst becomes too strong. But all fans - whether they are completely satisfied with watching the latest vampire-flick or if they choose to spend all their free time online with other devotees - have one thing in common: They're all suckers for vampires.

And this is what Milly Williamson devotes most of the pages in her book to explore and analyze. When she doesn't discuss fans and fandom she explores the origin and evolution of the vampire novel along with extremely popular vampire shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. However, as I said before, most pages are devoted to fans, not vampires.

(Or at least not "real" ones; quite a few of the fans wouldn't mind turn immortal if Louis or Lestat showed up on their doorstep and offered a quick bite and instant immortality).

Williamson is especially interested in female fans, and argues that the ones more or less devoting their lives to the vampire has done so because they "found in the vampire a figure that expresses painful outsiderdom and love in a way that echoes their own experiences in the world" (pg. 189).

Countless of people all over the world are interested in, and fascinated by, vampires, but The Lure of the Vampire is still not a book for everyone. It's a book written by a scholar, and it soon becomes apparent that its intended audience is other scholars or university students, not the everyday reader. Which obviously doesn't mean it's a bad book in any sense. Quite the opposite actually; as long as you have the necessary patience and training required to deal with it you'll find that Williamson has written a book that's both very informative and interesting, but if you don't and just want a book about vampires in general, then you're probably better off buying a different book.

In the section preceding chapter five, "Vampire Fandom: Rebels Without a Cause? Theorising Fandom in the Field of Cultural Production", Williamson informs the reader that she's about to offer a model to "understanding fandom in contemporary culture" (pg. 96), but in fact the entire book, not just chapter five, is an attempt to do just that.

Now, a thorough analysis is never a bad thing, but why does Williamson - along with many other scholars of contemporary culture - have such a hard time simply admitting that some people appreciates vampires and vampire movies without really considering why? Is it really necessary to analyse every single aspect in meticulous detail? I mean, I'm a vampire fan too, but I'm not sure I could tell you exactly why. I just like them.

Another strange thing, perhaps less important though, is the absence of discussions about films like Underworld, Van Helsing, and the Blade trilogy. On the back of the book these movies are mentioned, giving the impression that they will be discussed in the book, but as it turns out, only Blade is mentioned, and only in a sentence or two. Not that this feels like false marketing, well, in a sense I guess it does but it doesn't really matter that much, but it's still weird.

So now, then, is The Lure of the Vampire a good buy? Yes, as long as you belong to the right group of people who are able to fully appreciate her analysis. But no, not if your interest in vampires is more emotional than it's scholarly. Make sure to figure out what group you belong to before you buy it.

If you think that making a guitar is impossible, then this book is for you. The only one of its' kind, this book will teach you how to make a laminated archtop guitar. It can be done in a relatively small space and does not require many tools or expensive machinery, just a desire to do it. The book came about as the result of a suggestion and urging of my friend, Bob Benedetto. Because no other book is available for this type on construction, it is written in an easy to understand format and is priced so that almost anyone can afford it. It contains drawings and pictures with step by step easy to follow instructions so as to eliminate any guesswork. This book took four years to complete and is designed to help someone who wants to make this kind of guitar. It should serve as an excellent guide.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing - Much too difficult for children........2006-05-04

I bought this book based on the other reviews below, but wish I had not. The riddles in this book are much, much too difficult for children under the age of 13 or 14. My grandkids found them so difficult, they soon lost all interest. Fortunately, I had brought some other games along in the car for our long trip. I feel mislead; who wrote those reviews anyway? No child of "5 years old", as one reviewer said, could possibly do any of these riddles. Maybe a good gift for a high school or college student, but elementary kids definitely are not ready for this. Wish I could get my money back.

5 out of 5 stars What a great riddle book.......2005-08-18

I purchased this book because I saw it online while researching riddles. I use this book in my classroom as a transition tool. When moving from one activity to another, I will write a riddle on the board or read one out loud. This allows the students to stop focusing on their previous activity and focus on solving the riddle. After we solve the riddle, we can move on to our next activity.

This book also proves to be a lot of fun just to have around the house. Many of my friends have picked it up and tried to solve some of the riddles.

I suggest this riddle book for anyone who wants to start a collection or add to their current collection.

5 out of 5 stars the perfect riddle book.......2004-07-23

i bought this for my riddle-crazy 11-year-old, and it has drawn in her 14- and 18-year-old sisters and me as well. the level of the riddles is not too hard for an 11-year-old, but not too easy for an adult. the layout of the book is engaging, and the way the answers are arranged at the end means that when looking up one answer it is hard to accidentally read the answer to the next one. absolutely perfect.

              5 out of 5 stars Fun-Riddlistic!.......2002-02-21

This book is the pinacle of riddle fun! I popped like a spring chicken when I bought this book because it's so small, but HUGE with entertainment and mind-titilating fun. Most riddle books are really joke books, but this one is the REAL THING! There are hours of enjoyment and tons of mind-stumping exercises- Great for the whole family!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for all kinds of people.......2000-12-28

I bought this book because I'm a riddle fanatic. I was really pleasantly surprised by the sheer number of riddles. This book kept me busy for hours! The illustrations and the design are great too. This book makes a great gift for people of any age and is great at parties! It would be great if the authors did a follow-up book.

              5 out of 5 stars Complete Compilation.......2000-08-25

It is difficult to find a perfect compendium for your favourite TV series. Often the fault lies in the text which spends far too much time devoted to the actors and less on the actual episodes. Often these books are awash with glamorous pictures of the actors. Often the book describes too much of an episode and ends up like War and Peace or sometimes it describes too little and it looks like a flyer that was passed out to you on the street. Goodnight Seattle hits the right note in every aspect; it is the perfect compendium.

David Bailey has gone to great lengths to research the episodes of Frasier and he reviews them efficiently with a lot of wit. He disects the episodes into comfortable headings and then he breaks down the episode. We learn of guest stars; the celebrity callers and regular characters who don't even deserve a credit like the overworked waitresses. My favourite part of the compendium is the way the author continues minute sub-plots which an average viewer will forget after a viewing. He focuses on Granny Moon's antics, Maris' inappearances and the blossoming romance between Niles and Daphne.

The inspiring conclusion to A Child Called "It" and The Lost Boy

"All those years you tried your best to break me, and I'm still here. One day you'll see, I'm going to make something of myself."--Dave Pelzer, from A Man Named Dave

These words were Dave Pelzer's declaration of independence to his mother, and they represented the ultimate act of self-reliance. Dave's father never intervened as his mother abused him with shocking brutality, denying him food and clothing, torturing him in any way she could imagine. This was the woman who told her son she could kill him any time she wanted to-and nearly did. The more than two million readers of Pelzer's previous international bestsellers, A Child Called "It" and The Lost Boy, know that he lived to tell his courageous story. A Man Named Dave is the gripping conclusion to his inspirational trilogy. With stunning generosity of spirit, Dave Pelzer invites readers on his journey to discover how he turned shame into pride and rejection into acceptance.

              5 out of 5 stars moving.......2007-09-16

I only began reading this book as an assignment for a policy course. I am so glad now that I read it. It is moving and thought provoking and throughout the book I wanted to just reach out and help him. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. I couldn't put it down. I will now be reading the others in the series by the same author.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Read!.......2007-05-07

Imagine being abused by your drunk mother and being beaten for not doing the littlest things. Would you like it? Would you runaway and escape your crazy mother? Well, if you would like to know the story of this abused child then you must read A Child Called "It", The Lost Boy, and A Man Named Dave. A Man Named Dave was about Dave and his life as he got older. He is introduced to a woman and get married and have a child. This really surprised me because I wasn't expecting it.I could not put the books down until I knew Dave (the main character) is safe from his crazy mother. Well, is he? You must read the three books and find out for yourself. I am not going to ruin the surprises that come along the way.
I would definitely rate all of Dave Pelzer's books five stars. I would rate them five stars because Dave does a great job of putting you in his position. I have read all three of his books. I am not sure if he has written any more books but if he has I would definitely read them. Dave Pelzer just does a good job describing his sad and happy childhood as well as adulthood experiences. I have never read books as sad as these but they keep me hooked from early on. I just never want to put them down.
I would definitely not recommend this book to elementary students. These books are not appropriate for them because there is inappropriate use of language as well as unthinkable situations which Dave is put through by his mother. I would recommend this book to students that are in the eighth grade and above. They should be able to handle this in an appropriate way. This would be a great book for both boys and girls because it is an autobiography not on a particular subject that only boys or girls would enjoy it. All of Dave Pelzer's books are in the medium range of difficulty. They are rated medium difficulty because some parts may be hard to understand for some people. I admit I had to reread some parts to understand everything that was going on. I sure wish I helped to convince you to read A Child Called "It", The Lost Boy, and A Man Named Dave. These are the three best books I have ever read in my whole entire life. And I hope you enjoy them just as much as I did!

4 out of 5 stars Trying to find peace.......2007-04-14

What I found heartbreaking about this book is the impact that Dave's childhood continues to play in his adulthood.
His confrontation with his mother is heart wrenching. Dave's relationship with his child, and the constant striving to ensure that the cycle of abuse is broken, and that he himself does not become an abuser.
Another powerful book, and an amazing life achievement.

4 out of 5 stars Behind Closed Doors .......2007-03-28

I recommend this book because it tells the story of what really happened in the Pelzer household. It made me laugh, cry, and even worried about what will happen to David. The scary thing about life is that you never know who is being abused or being an abuser until you know them personally. Also, you should report child abuse right when you witness/ hear about it because if you wait then it might be too late. Dave Pelzer kept me reading until the end. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Both volumes are wonderful photo references (and updated from the original Kookabura issues) and contain the bulk of the existing photos of the aircraft of the Luftwaffe Aces. There's not a lot of text. If memory serves correctly, Vol 1 covers JG1-JG51 and Vol 2 covers JG52-JG300. Both are a must for the Jagdwaffe historian. Excellent reference for the aircraft model builder

5 out of 5 stars How not to conduct Joint Warfare.......2006-09-06

Trainor and Gordon do a commendable job explaining the operational level planning and execution of the first Gulf War. I unreservedly recommend this book as the best description of the events comprising Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm that I have read. "The Generals' War" explains the challenges of joint integration and deconfliction, the intricacies of fighting with allies, and the blend of political and military concerns faced by a regional combatant commander.

Desert Storm is often described in service schools as a shining example of joint warfare, however the authors expose this statement as overblown and explain the shortfalls in interservice cooperation that plagued Schwarzkopf's CENTCOM, and demonstrate how each service ultimately did its own thing. "The Generals' War" demonstrates that Desert Storm was not so much a campaign that combined joint effects to achieve a goal, as it was a campaign that piled each service's effects onto the enemy forces until they collapsed.

The books does not pull punches and examines how problems with phasing and operational tempo allowed many enemy formations to escape capture or destruction.

"The Generals' War" will appeal to the military professional and the average reader alike. Well done.

4 out of 5 stars An insiders look at the Gulf War.......2006-05-27

The General's War is a well written insider's look at the operational planning and execution of Operation Desert Storm. The detailed discussion of the operational planning teams that designed campaign plan was the highlight. It provided a rare glimpse into the extremely important, but often overlooked subject of campaign planning. While the high-tech smart bombs are what most people remember about the war, it was these small teams of mid-level officers that came up with the plan the liberated Kuwait in 100 hours that deserve much of the credit. The early stumbles at "jointness" are evident throughout the book, as old service rivalries dominated many issues. I can see why this book is the standard at the Marine Corps Command and Staff College for the study of the Gulf War.

5 out of 5 stars A detailed and hard-hitting account of the Gulf War.......2005-12-29

In "The Generals' War: The Inside Story of the Conflict in the Gulf," Michael R. Gordon and Bernard E. Trainor have crafted a fascinating work of military history. As the title indicates, the book places a heavy emphasis on the actions of the senior military officers involved in the planning and execution of the U.S.-led coalition's 1991 war against Iraq. In the preface, the authors note that this conflict "is without precedent in the annals of warfare. It was the dawn of a new era" (page x).

In their acknowledgements section, the authors discuss in detail the research that went into the writing of this book. They note that they interviewed administration officials, diplomats, allied military officers, and intelligence experts; they observe further that some "talked on the record; others on a not-for-attribution basis." They also drew on written responses that former president George Bush provided to their questions. Their research is meticulously documented in a lengthy set of endnotes (pages 479-520), thus enhancing the book's credibility. The text is further enhanced by thirteen detailed and clearly drawn maps that illuminate many aspects of the war: the Iraqi air defense system, coalition force deployment and movement, locations of oil fields, and more. Also included are photographs of many of the senior leaders involved in the war.

The book is full of fascinating details about many aspects of the war. The authors discuss the participation of various coalition forces in the campaign, as well as the diplomatic activities involving the USSR, Egypt, and other nations. Also discussed are friendly fire incidents and Iraqi POWs. I was particularly interested in the many details about the military hardware used by both coalition and Iraqi forces; the authors cover aircraft, naval vessels, sea and land mines, mine-clearing gear, tanks, and more. There are some really noteworthy battle scenes; particularly vivid is a description of a tank battle between U.S. and Iraqi forces--"an impressive tableau of destruction."

Gordon and Trainor are pointedly critical of many aspects of the conduct of the war. They discuss examples of rivalry and poor coordination between the different branches of the U.S. military, and also criticize the French and the Saudis. But the strongest and most sustained criticism is directed at General Norman Schwarzkopf. The authors assess both his command style and planning of the war and ultimately fault him for failing to achieve true joint warfare. The book places a heavy emphasis on the battle of Khafji; the authors discuss this engagement in detail and criticize both Schwarzkopf and General Colin Powell for failing to grasp its lessons.

Gordon and Trainor note that the Persian Gulf War was "a laboratory for the American military's new weapons and fighting doctrines." This well-written book vividly shows how hardware, tactics, diplomatic concerns, and personalities came together in the fighting of this war. This is a valuable addition to the military history of the late 20th century.

5 out of 5 stars Not the same Gen Franks.......2003-12-07

To those reviewers who have pointed out that the Gen Franks who comes off as incompetent in "The Generals' War" is ironically the same Gen Franks who led the recent war against Iraq, please read the book again. The Gen Franks in "The Generals' War" is Gen Frederick Franks, while the CENTCOM Commander who led the military forces in the most recent war with Iraq is Gen Tommy Franks. They are NOT the same person.

                4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2003-10-15

This book provides an excellent view into much of the political and military decision-making that occurred during the first Gulf War. Gordon and Trainor's prose flows smoothly in this historical account of the war and this, along with many interesting vignettes mixed in, make the book easy to read. I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning not only more about the first conflict in the Gulf, but also those wanting insight into how the planning and execution of such an operation is complex and riddled with political battles.

Beginning their narrative shortly before Iraq invades Kuwait, the authors show that while some within the CIA were concerned with Iraqi troop developments near the Kuwaiti border, most in the Bush Administration were unconcerned about the possibility that Hussein would challenge the U.S. in the region. The ambiguous communiqués exchanged between Iraq and the U.S. are briefly mentioned, including the infamous Glaspie memo. What the Bush administration failed to realize, was how desperate Iraq's situation would become due to their failing economy and continued large military expenditures. This combination created "an explosive relationship" according to Gordon and Trainor.

After the Iraqis seize Kuwait, the book turns to its most interesting section-the decisions of where and how many forces to deploy and what to do with the forces once in place. After scrambling to receive approval from the Saudis to station troops in their territory, debate began to center around whether U.S. forces should protect Saudi Arabia or attempt to expel Iraqi forces from Kuwait. Powell favored only protecting the Saudis, while Eagleburger believed the U.S. should seek to remove the Iraqis. This first quibble over the role of the U.S. forces was only one of many to occur throughout the conflict between decision-makers at all levels.

Once it was decided Kuwait was to be liberated, the next hot topic was how to use the forces in the Gulf most effectively. In the U.S. command debate swirled over how to use the air and ground forces. Unsurprisingly, the Air Force asserted the war could be won solely through the use of air power while the Army and Marines thought a ground offensive would be necessary. Pentagon official, John Warden, pitched his revolutionary war plan to CINC commander Norman Schwartzkopf. Warden's plan involved striking at the heart of Iraq's command and control center-Baghdad. Rather than bombard Iraqi ground troops with an endless stream of firepower, Warden proposed going straight to what he called the "inner ring" of Iraq's military power and targeting electrical, radar, communication, and other installations critical to Saddam's ability to disseminate orders to subordinates. Unlike Vietnam where air power provided support for ground forces, Warden's plan involved knocking out key pillars of the Iraqi military machine with the hope that it would collapse on itself. Warden's plan was tweaked several times over to accommodate other branches and military officials but the basic framework stayed in place-Iraq would be weakened through a systematic air campaign aimed at Baghdad before a ground war would begin.

With the air strategy firmly in place, work began on identifying potential targets. As the U.S. gathered intelligence on exactly what types of equipment the Iraqis possessed, they began to realize two things: 1) they were unsure about the quality of the hardware the Iraqis had and 2) the massive military buildup undertaken during the Reagan administration had neglected a few areas that might become crucial during the Gulf War. Hussein had managed to cobble together a formidable regional force through arms sales mainly from the Soviets, French, and Chinese. The U.S. was uncertain how good the Iraqi air defenses were, how effectively the Iraqis could use it, and how U.S. stealth technology and radar jamming techniques would perform against it.

The U.S. was not only uneasy because the stealth technology was untested but because other areas of the military had been neglected during the Reagan era build-up. Obsessed with technology, the Reagan buildup did an excellent job of developing high-tech weapons (stealth, Tomahawk cruise missles, etc.) but passed over smaller, more minor upgrades but upgrades that were still important. Two cases illustrate this point. First, only Air Force planes had two systems of independently identifying aircraft as friend-from-foe. Since it was a rule of engagement that U.S. planes had to have two independent identifications, the Navy could not engage what it believed (rightly) were two Iraqi war jets trailing U.S. planes returning from bombing raids. Another example involves the radio technology possessed by the Army. Instead of modern radios, the Army pilots had antiquated radios that had been held over from the Vietnam era. The radios were still operable but also gave away the position of the user. When two Army pilots were forced to eject over Iraq, the Iraqis eventually captured them in part because their radio transmissions were traceable.

With the air phase humming along, planning for a ground invasion continued. Again, there were battles over which ground forces would carry out which missions. The Army had planned to enter the western part of Iraq, storm toward Baghdad, and cut off the supply lines of the Iraqi forces in Kuwait. The Marines' role would be to push the Iraqi army out of Kuwait and into the Army, which would have gathered a full head of steam and deliver the knock-out punch. The Marines became upset because they felt undermanned to charge into Kuwait only to have the Army swoop in and steal the glory by finishing off the Iraqis. Why do they have to do the dirty work and get none of the credit? Partners within the coalition also had to be accommodated. The Saudis insisted on helping push back Iraqi forces that had crossed the Saudi border as a matter of pride. Britain wanted a prominent role in the ground war and France also wanted to conduct a significant number of sorties. All were woven into the battle plan, even if the plan had to be altered in ways that were thought detrimental to success.

With the concerns of the services and allies adequately assuaged, the ground war was finally set to begin. The Marines moved into Kuwait and after some intense initial resistance, had the Iraqis on the run. The only problem was the Marines' effort had been too successful. They Iraqis retreated quickly enough that the Army did not reach a position to deliver its "left hook" to the fleeting Iraqi forces. Since the U.S. had been so effective in the ground phase, Powell and Schwartzkopf began to lobby the president with the idea that the fighting should end soon and the U.S. should scale back in the region to prevent anti-American sentiment. Both Powell and Schwartzkopf believed that plowing through Baghdad and deposing Saddam Hussein would be costly in terms of casualties. They argued the mission had been accomplished-Kuwait had been liberated.
