"Art grows organically out of its society at its best... And if your connections happen to be family ones... then that's your world." So speaks Ursula K. LeGuin, on the myth of the isolated artist, in just one of the remarkable interviews in Judith Pierce Rosenberg's "A Question of Balance," where working artist/author moms, ranging from Dorothy Allison to Rita Dove, and many more, wax eloquently, movingly -- and practically -- on how one embraces the gifts of family and children, yet stays true to one's muse. An indispensable book for art-producing moms -- and dads -- everywhere.

Book Description
What Is Goth? is a humorous, self-deprecating look at Goth culture from the inside out. Imagine The Preppy Handbook colliding with Charles Addams. Then add a lot more melancholy and a lot more spooky.
What Is Goth? dispels the false stereotypes and reinforces the true ones surrounding Goths and Goth culture. "To the mundane," Voltaire writes, "Goths are weird, black-clad freaks who are obsessed with death; they are sad all of the time. Take a closer look at the Goth scene, however, and you will find a rich tapestry of ideas and practices and a menagerie of colorful characters. Oh, dear. I said `colorful.'"
This illustrated answer to What Is Goth? shows readers how to:
Identify the anatomies of different kinds of Goths: CyberGoths, Rivet-Heads, Romantigoths, Goth-a-billies, and more
Write a poem (Mad Libs style) with the Gothic Poem Generator
Properly dance the dances of darkness: "Cobwebs in the Attic," "The Gothic Tai Chi Dance," "Pulling the Evil Taffy"
Yes, Goths are pale, wear black clothing, love black makeup (on men and women), mope, listen to real downer music, and perfect the art of living in a perpetual state of ennui and melancholy. But there's so much more to being Goth. Goths come from all walks of life. Many are teenagers who live with their parents; others are doctors, lawyers, musicians, and so on. Most Goths are highly literate and creative, but all real Goths have to dress the part. In other words, "Abandon all hope ye who enter a Goth club in khakis!"
Eerily illustrated, What Is Goth?is the perfect book for any Goth, Goth wannabe, or "mundane" who is hopelessly confused by all the gloom.
Customer Reviews:
Was very entertaining........2007-07-12
As a Goth, This book did not tell me anything I did not already know. But if you're new to the "Scene" then I recommend picking it up. It gave me quite a few laughs (yes Goth's have a sence of humor) and was well worth the $5 I paid for it. The book was very small though, Not the size of a regular book. The book also had some very amusing pictures in it as well, It's only 94 pages of actual reading and only took me 20 mins. to read all the way through, But it was worth it. If you're a Goth just starting out, Or a person wanting to know more about the "Scene" than I would get this book, It's cheap, It has nice pictures, And Voltaire describes his life in it as well. Get it. Got it. Good.
I agree, no good!.......2007-06-17
I mean..people that belong the scene can understand this book and find it funny..but this can reforce labels that most people have, goths are just teenagers playing dressing trying to get attention..com'on, you guys!!I know is nice to say to an all-black-dressed-depressed-face-poser "smile, goth!=D", but goth it's not just this remember???I think Goth Chic is still the best book
A big label that this one brings..since when being goth is just make fun of yourself and the scene, hun???
This way the serious side of the scene will die, really..nowadays in the scene, when you try to talk to someone something serious, the only thing they can do is laugh..THE ONLY..
ps:sorry any language mistakes, my first language is portuguese
How sad that you enjoy being identified as "Silly".......2007-06-01
...and someone to be laughed at.
Yes, there are silly, silly moonbats out there who think that they are vampires (so *not* goth, ok?) as they retire to the "crypt" of mom's basement, where they will awake the next morning and eat Frosted Flakes before raking the leaves (Undead, indeed!).
But is Voltaire laughing at them? With them? At himself? Or at you?
He looks the part, he has infiltrated your world, only to mock you and profit from you.
For a true Goth who is not delusional or playing dress-up once a week at a club or school, this is offensive.
Voltaire is the ultimate poseur, and look at all of the cash that you throw at him. I salute him for turning Goth into the money making venture that the rest of us could never achieve.
Voltaire my old friend, SALUTE!
What is goth?.......2007-04-11
Very funny first book by Voltaire. If you are a Voltaire fan, this is the book for you. Or if you want to read about the gothic scene from a fun perspective, I highly reccommend this book.
Voltaire has the answer.......2007-02-23
Out of the numerous times I have heard the same question asked as it appears in this book's title, Voltaire is one of the few writers who has managed to give the right answer.
A witty and intelligent read, with great illustrations.

Book Description
"This book fills a void in bringing together Hollywood stereotyping and Latino self-representation in one study. With clarity and insight, Berg demonstrates why it is so important to take such an approach."
Chon Noriega, author of
Shot in America: Television, the State, and the Rise of Chicano Cinema
The bandido, the harlot, the male buffoon, the female clown, the Latin lover, and the dark ladythese have been the defining, and demeaning, images of Latinos in U.S. cinema for more than a century. In this book, Charles Ramírez Berg develops an innovative theory of stereotyping that accounts for the persistence of such images in U.S. popular culture. He also explores how Latino actors and filmmakers have actively subverted and resisted such stereotyping.
In the first part of the book, Berg sets forth his theory of stereotyping, defines the classic stereotypes, and investigates how actors such as Raúl Julia, Rosie Pérez, José Ferrer, Lupe Vélez, and Gilbert Roland have subverted stereotypical roles. In the second part, he analyzes Hollywood's portrayal of Latinos in three genres: social problem films, John Ford westerns, and science fiction films. In the concluding section, Berg looks at Latino self-representation and anti-stereotyping in Mexican American border documentaries and in the feature films of Robert Rodríguez. He also presents an exclusive interview in which Rodríguez talks about his entire career, from
Bedhead to
Spy Kids, and comments on the role of a Latino filmmaker in Hollywood and how he tries to subvert the system.

Book Description
Arnold Snyder shows how to play and win money online against the internet casinos. People love to gamble, and now that they can do so from their own homes, Snyder shows them how to choose safe sites to play. He goes over every step of the process, from choosing sites, opening an account, and how to take your winnings! There are major chapters covering the differences between "brick and mortar" and internet gaming rooms and how to handle common situations and predicaments. A major chapter covers internet poker and basic strategies to beat hold'em and other games online.
Customer Reviews:
Please read the first review and listen to it!.......2006-06-26
Please do not buy or read this book! I don't want competition. Arnold Snyder is a genious and in my opinion is the foremost gambling expert in the world, and no, I'm not one of "The Entity Known As Avery Cardoza's" shills either. This book is kind of like a sharpa who leads you to a mysterious temple and says "here it is". It doesn't really tell you what "it" is other than to say it could be worth a couple large. It's worth a lot more, and if you don't know why that's certainly not my problem, nor is it Mr. Snyder's for that matter.
Previous review is flawed.......2006-03-17
In reading the first review posted here, most is misguided, misleading, or just wrong.
However, this statement is completely false:
"The trouble is that online gambling is illegal in most of the United States. "
Online gambling is illegal in the few specific states that have prohibited it (Nevada, New Jersey, and a few others). This definitely does not make up the majority of the US.
I would think that Amazon would have a policy against posting false statements in a review.
A bit disappointing .......2006-03-17
Arnold Snyder has some interesting ideas as a gambling writer, but this new offering is a little disappointing.
The author explains how to make money from casino and poker bonuses. Basically, his method involves signing up with an internet casino, taking any bonus they have, then cashing out.
The trouble is that online gambling is illegal in most of the United States. If you could make hundreds of thousands of dollars doing this then it might be worthwhile, but as Snyder seems to admit, getting the money is really hard. Getting money out of an e-casino, judging by the problems Snyder's mentions, is not easy, they are very reluctant to pay up, many simply will take your money knowing you can't take them to court. Some will cheat: it is very easy to write a computer program which fixes the odds against you.
Even with honest e-casinos, you often have to wager eighty times the bonus or more before they will let you keep it!! You would end up losing your money most of the time!! Imagine trying to get a $100 bonus, having to wager $8000, and losing $600 or $700. It does happen!
If you check out the author's website, you see why he is promoting e-casinos-his site gets lots of money from links to internet casinos and he gets a percentage of the losses of people who go through those links. I think that is why he is recommending this type of "advantage play" rather than something respectable like card-counting.
Nevertheless, he does cover some of the common problems you face online in some detail. And, the section on poker is a good basic primer, if you like playing poker.

Book Description
Here's Johnny is like sitting with Ed and Johnny over lunch:
The last time I saw Johnny, about a year before he died, we had chicken, a couple of glasses of red wine, and then we just sat there and reminisced, going back and forth the way we did on the show. We talked about our kids, and our careers and the state of America, just two lucky guys who loved each other and the good luck of our careers.
Ed McMahon is the only person who was with Johnny Carson, even before The Tonight Show, when they both first appeared on Who Do You Trust. Now, with Johnny's blessing before he died, McMahon can finally share all the stories that only he knows. From the sofa at Johnny's right, to backstage, to their personal relationship - McMahon will provide a real view of the man who was so careful to only show one side of himself to the public. Brilliant in front of the camera, but shy in person, Carson seldom gave interviews. Only McMahon can tell the stories and provide the insights into the personality that made Johnny Carson more of a friend we invited into our home than a television star.
This entertaining tribute will feature over 200 pictures, many never before published, from both McMahon's and Carson's private archives.
Customer Reviews:
Not up to standard.......2007-08-04
Ed McMahon needs to remain from behind a keyboard. He worked with a true comedy genius for years and years and wrote about none of this stuff. His book was boring and lacked insight into the man; Johnny Carson. Badly written, poorly organized and thoroughly boring. It was like watching dry paint dry again.
Here's Johnny!: My Memories of Johnny Carson, The Tonight Show, and 46 Years of Friendship.......2007-04-11
Great book, wished I hadn't lent it out to someone because I don't think I am going to see it again. It is great having Ed write this book, good background info on both of them.
An Okay Read, But Could Have Contained A Whole Lot More.......2007-03-05
Ed McMahon's title recalls some of the details of his 46-year friendship with Johnny Carson by sharing several anecdotes of their relationship over the years.
While the book was an easy read with several doses of humor that made me laugh, I still felt the book missed much of what Johnny Carson was really like. Sure, there were some insights, but not enough to give the reader a whole picture of Johnny Carson. While I understand that Mr. Carson was a very private personality (because he was shy and not because he detested people), there could have been more details about his life, particularly since Mr. McMahon shared a close 46-year friendship with Mr. Carson.
One thing I did enjoy about the book was some the comedy highlights of some of their shows, particularly: Floyd Turbo, Carnac, the man from South Carolina who made jewelry from bird droppings, the lady with the exquisite potato chip collection, the boy who admitted to throwing up when watching the Tonight Show, Ed Ames' tomahawk-throwing stunt, and other funny episodes.
As I read about the comedy highlights, I recalled seeing these episodes on the Best of Carson video series from the 1960s to the 1990s. I highly recommend the series for anyone who would like to get a bellyful of laughs from some of the many Tonight Show episodes.
Back to the book. The read was okay but again, there could have been more. I give it 3 stars mainly because I am such a Carson fan and do miss him.
Johnny Carson was one of a kind..............2006-12-17
I did not enjoy reading this book because Ed McMahon is no writer! He is probably a very nice guy but the book was boring. It was an homage to Johnny, as well it should be, but the stories were ones I've heard repeated on television or in interviews. No unusual insight or stories I thought I was going to hear upon buying the book.
Little more to add.......2006-08-20
I have little more to add to the reviewers below. Unfortunately, Mr. McMahon (whom I loved along with Johnny and Doc and Skitch before him) has little more to say than even casual fans of the Carson annniversary shows would already know, but stretched that little out into a book. It is a fast and empty read. I know there are people in the world who think Johnny Carson was not human and did not have a persona except what we saw on the tube or on stage, but surely McMahon doesn't think there were more than two or three. Anyone who saw the last week of Carson's shows must know that this was a complicated man McMahon was dealing with as his subject, but outside of telling us Carson was a complicated man, McMahon never helps us to understand him. Instead, from McMahon's anecdotes, they just sound like frat brothers who have never matured past the age of 21. I was shocked to find out that McMahon admits he had not seen Carson for over a year before he died. These hardly sound like bosom buddies, and the lack of depth of understanding of Carson outside the show (there are a few asides in which Carson admits to anxiety but not much more) is a gaping hole in the narrative. Aside from the photos, one other positive. For those who, like me, were particular fans of Carnac, there are two pages of the best jokes from that series of sketches. I was pleased to read that Ed's favorite Carnac joke was mine too. Regrettably, I can 't recommend doing anything more with this book than looking those two pages up in your local public library in a corner where you can have a good laugh without disturbing other readers while imagining Ed and Johnny delivering those jokes as only they could.

Skip this one........2006-01-31
I would not recommend this book to anyone who does not already have a strong catechetical background. There are a lot of basic facts in the book that are in error. I think the material is above what the author can grasp. I would put this on your do not read list until you have a sounder understanding of Vatican II and Lumen Gentuim. I would not recomend this book
Student Friendly.......2004-05-01
Students are challenged by Catholic doctrine presented in very everyday situations. Conservative students are pushed to consider the value of feminist theology and social justice, while liberal students encounter the necessity of authority and revelation. Doyle's even-handed treatment of the theological spectrum makes Church Emerging more than an history book, or dry list of doctrines. Instead the book functions as a bridge between left and right by illustrating that the concerns of both stem from the gospel message. The dusty events and documents of the Second Vatican Council are presented within the context of contemporary issues so the Church Emerging both informs students of past occurences, as it jars them into considering how Catholic teaching might (gasp) apply to their own lives today.
Other features which make this book an excellent choice for the classroom or personal study are the discussion questions and bibliography found at the end of each chapter. I have found students eager to engage in conversation after reflecting upon Doyle's questions. Throughout the fact-packed text main points are highlighted and summarized in tables, lists and charts, making it easier for students to identify the important concepts of each chapter. Furthermore, Doyle begins each chapter by sharing a personal experience or story. This functions not merely as a catchy intro, but students have commented that they feel close to the author and more comfortable with negotiating through the material. In writing Church Emerging from Vatican II, Dr. Doyle has provided a great service for the students, the teachers and the Church.
Church Emerging..........2004-03-02
A lucid and engaging exposition of some of the more salient issues facing the contemporary Roman Catholic Church. An excellent introductory resource for students.
An ideal introduction to the theology of the Church.......2004-02-21
I am astonished at how much basic and important information can be found in this book; and yet it is consistently presented in a very personal, engaging way. Doyle presents sophisticated theological reflection in a form that accurately guages the needs and abilities of undergraduates in the United Staes. The author's personal/confessional commentary makes the vital connection between experience and theology while clearly setting forth the official teachings of the Church. I have used this book for several semesters with great success. My students love it.
Living Vatican II in the Day to Day.......2004-02-21
The author of this book has created a collection of short personal stories that introduce and brilliantly exemplify explanations of the main focal points of two of the key Vatican II documents. In the best Catholic "both-and" tradition Doyle manages to thoroughly present most aspects of the issues associated with the documents, offering his skillful synthesis to the reader to then consider and digest. The book is a wonderful read, ideal for both everday "Catholics in the pews" and undergraduate students who wish to learn more about their great Vatican II heritage. Overall, a masterful work.
