Roger Fry: A Biography
ASIN: 0226266427 |
Book Description
In the first decades of the twentieth century, the art critic Roger Fry introduced English-speaking audiences to modern French art and formalist aesthetic theory. A Roger Fry Reader, edited by Christopher Reed, brings together for the first time a comprehensive selection of Fry's essays. Most appear here for the first time since their original publication in scholarly journals and art magazines, while some have never been published before. Representing 40 years of engagement with the arts, the essays cover a broad spectrum of topics, from Fry's influential promotion of Post-Impressionism to art education, museums, architecture, decorative art, and the implications of literature and dance for the visual arts. Reed also provides valuable historical background and considers Fry's legacy for the present. A Roger Fry Reader affords an opportunity to examine both the foundations of modern art criticism from the point of view of one of its foremost practitioners and current debates about the nature ofart and aesthetic experience.

Book Description
Paul Graham's photographs touch upon the social fracture of America--the great divide between the included and excluded, blacks and whites, haves and have-nots. Taking on a simple topic, of late dealt with only through clich photojournalism, American Night embraces neglected territory in a series of shocking images that sit on the fence between art and document. Graham's images blind and overwhelm the viewer with a feeling akin to stepping out of a sheltered place and into the sunlight. Drained of color, shadow and form, they resonate with the lives of those they portray...and then the sequence snaps, either to a vibrant full-color image of a freshly minted dream house, complete with a blue sky and green grass of unattainable perfection, or to an intensely dark street portrait...before returning to the endless blinding whiteness of everyday life. Beyond their paucity or wealth of color these images contrast one another in their content: These perfect homes are unobtainable to those walking in the burnt landscape; they are a mirage, a dream or promise that can almost never be reached. Here is the chasm between promise and actuality, hope and reality, dream and truth. Shot between 1998 and 2002 in locations across America, including Los Angeles, Memphis, Detroit, New York City and Atlanta.
Customer Reviews:
Not Grahams best.......2006-01-09
Graham has a great idea behind how the photographs are presented but in the end the statement comes out a little flat and simplistic...and this is if you have the stamina to wade through what seems like a bloated edit. The middle photographs are beautiful however and really quite nice on their own as weird street photographs.
RE: Paul Graham - American Night.......2004-08-23
Sophisticated and challenging work; exquisitely put together, and very well worth the effort.

Funny book!.......2000-09-24
For the ultimate Barney Fife fan, this is written in Barney's point of view, with his views on all subjects. The two guys who wrote this obviously know the character very well. Very funny! If you're a big Barney fan, you'll enjoy this book!

This unique book utilizes programmed instruction to help students gain mastery of some concepts and techniques related to late nineteenth and early twentieth century harmony. Programmed instruction provides immediate feedback which speeds the learning process and prevents missed points and wrong ideas from causing serious trouble. Readers receive continual feedback and reinforcement as they work at their own pace. A Discography in an Appendix provides musical examples of issues in the book.
This book is divided into three sections: Part 1 is Melodic Tonality; Part 2 is Harmonic Tonality; and Part 3 is The Evolution of Harmonic Tonality.
For anyone interested in Music Theory and History.

Wong on Dice.......2007-02-19
Read this book BEFORE you try to develop dice setting skill. It will save you alot of time. It is one of two books that should be in the library of any crap shooter. The other book is The Mad Professor's Crapshooter Bible.
The Wong Book for information.......2006-08-13
This book is great if you want to learn the statistical probabilities of throwing a 3 on your 40th throw of the dice but not very informative if you're trying to learn how to win at craps.
Not the Top Book on Craps.......2005-07-04
I have enjoyed reading all of Frank Scoblete's craps books, "Forever Craps," "Beat the Craps Out of the Casinos," and "The Craps Underground," and I respect his judgment as a gambling authority. But I have to disagree with his five-star review of this particular book.
The book is written by someone who has just learned to practice a controlled throw having taken a class from golden touch and the book is therefore the early judgments of someone who really doesn't have a full grasp of the technique of dice control as would someone who has been involved with the skill as would Sharpshooter and Scoblete. These are the thoughts of a novice and as such you have to take them with a big grain of salt. In another year his thoughts might be different.
Maybe writers stick together and that's why Scoblete gave the book such a good rating. There is a tremendous amount of fluff in the book about dice challenges between Wong and unbelievers that are truly boring and comments throughout by people who are not themselves controlled shooters. Who cares what these people think? They don't know anything! Their ideas and opinions are worthless but they do take up space in an otherwise somewhat skimpy book.
If you want to read a book on precision dice shooting, then get Sharpshooter's book before you get this one.
Here are my ratings of the dice books available for sale on Amazon. I've read them all.
1. Forever Craps (five stars)
2. The Craps Underground (five stars)
3. Beat the Craps Out of the Casinos (Expanded Version - Five Stars)
4. Get the Edge at Craps (three stars)
5. Beat the Craps Out of the Casinos - original version (three stars)
6. Wong on Dice (two stars)
7. Dice Control for Casino Craps (one star)
8. John Patrick's Advanced Craps (one star)
9. Tina Trapp's Guide to Craps (one star)
10. Gamble to Win: Advanced Craps (one star)
Wong on Dice is Worth the Price!.......2005-06-28
Stanford Wong has been one of the great gambling minds of the past quarter century with expertise in blackjack, sports betting, and tournament strategies. In 2004, he decided to see if there was anything to dice control, the advantage-play method at craps, first formulated by the Captain of Craps in the late 1970s for the modern casino environment.
Stanford signed up to take the two-day Golden Touch Craps dice control seminar that was offered in Las Vegas in 2004. I was one of the instructors at that seminar and I was able to watch an astute mind come to the realization that indeed dice control was the real thing and with hard work and many weeks, if not many months of practice, a good dice controller could get an edge over the casinos.
Getting such an edge required three things:
1. A controlled throw that offset the normal probabilities of two dice
2. A betting system that could be overcome by such a throw
3. How to handle other players at the tables, players who shot the dice in a random way
As with many a skeptic who has seen the light, Wong has become a strong advocate of dice control as the way to beat the game of casino craps. He has indeed gained an edge with his shooting and has been frequenting the casinos putting into practice in the casinos what he practiced at home.
He has now written a book about dice control and his experiences since he took the Golden Touch Craps dice control two-day seminar and a follow-up lesson two months later with Beau Parker. Wong on Dice is an excellent book that shows novice players how to approach dice control at the game of craps. He opens the book with a discussion of how craps is played and then moves on to the more salient material. Wong covers many of the common elements that must be mastered in order to turn the game of craps in your favor, including: the grip, the alignment, and the delivery. He discusses several good dice sets as well as the need for backspin and softness in the landing.
One of his especially good sections has to do with practice techniques and how to judge whether your dice are behaving as they should. His betting advice is intelligent and quite conservative, an important ingredient because even some of the best dice controllers can't overcome the high house edges on some of the bets at craps. Chapter 11 goes into how to find your seven-to-rolls ratio using various dice sets.
Wong on Dice is definitely a book that serious craps players should consider buying. Stanford Wong was a good student and he has written a good book.

Loaded with discussion/conversation material.......2002-12-04
"Watching What We Watch" is very readable, thought-provoking, and topical. The authors have put together a model for how to watch television, offering an insights that are sure to prompt discussion. From "The Simpsons" to "ER", from "Moesha" to "Will and Grace," the book gave me pause, asking questions about where God fit into my viewing habits. I passed this book along to our Discussion Group at church, with the strong recommendation that we use a chapter (or two) as a springboard for talking about spirituality and the media.
From the Back Cover.......2001-12-08
"Watching What We Watch deconstructs the magic of television and shows us how the creators of programming do their tricks and why they do them. With this knowledge we can apply of own 'lens of faith' to the magic lantern of television."
--Michael Rhodes, television and film producer
"A useful guide from a principled point of view for coming to grips with the TV ritual."
--George Gerbner, Dean Emeritus, The Annenberg School of
Communications, University of Pennsylvania
"Television is a sizeable part of everyday life in America. This book shows provocatively, why and how television might be an important part of our everyday faith."
--Tom Beaudoin, author of "Virtual Faith: Irreverant Spiritual Quest of Generation X
"This is an engaging and throughly researched volume which brings together scholars in the fields of theological study, communication, and visual literacy in a compelling and easy-to- read volume."
--Jeffrey H. Mahan, Professor of Ministry, Media and Culture, Iliff School of Theology
"The value of 'Watching What We Watch' is that it makes us sit up and take notice of the cognitive and spiritual impact of even the most apparently trivial program. It has been estimated that the average viewer devotes eight years over a lifetime to gazing at the small screen, this book will help ensure that these are not wasted years."
--Chris Arthur, Senior Lecturer in Religious Studies, University of Wales
A Must for Media Educators in Faith Communities.......2001-12-08
In the maelstrom following the release of the Harry Potter film, it is refreshing to read such thoughtful analysis of our television culture. Harry not on the small screen yet? Oh yes, he is. Advertisments (Coke, literacy and HP), TV specials (Katie Couric looking for Platform 9 3/4 for an hour) and commercials galore, HP is everywhere.
It's exactly this kind of awareness that can help parents, religious educators and pastoral ministers learn about media literacy themselves and then profit from a book like WATCHING WHAT WE WATCH.
Take the chapter on ER for example. Mark Scalese disucusses how power relations function in television as a dominant culture and in how the program is crafted.
More than anything, and to link this back to the Harry Potter phenomenon, is the commercialization: the commerce of television, and by extension, all information and entertainment media. It's useless to drone on about the "effects" or influence of television without considering the money... an issue this book deals with well.
Most helpful are the appendices with guidelines on how to "read" television, worksheets for analyzing television (criteria) shows and various lesson plans. Any thoughtful parent or teacher can make this book work for them.
And more than anything, for the media academic, it has an INDEX!
I am glad I bought this book!

Okay.......2007-06-15
I knew everything on the quiz in the back of the book, and there were some things that I thought he would know that were left out. It was an okay book, I read it in one day. It's not my favorite book about Presidents, but it was alright.
Facts and Fun!.......2007-04-30
An excellently written resource about our nation's presidents. Tons of educational facts, along with entertaining trivia tidbits. This is a great book for children and adults. My children's school PTA bought a copy for every teacher.
Book with RESPECT.......2007-02-02
It seems as if the previous reviewer has not read this book! It seems writer Ross is critiquing an interview he saw on TV and not the book. I thought this was for a book critiques. Possibly Writer Ross can critique the interview on the CSPAN Site. This book is a fair portrayal of all the presidents written with extreme admiration and respect for the office of president. We all need to read this and be more patriotic and thankful rather than willing to pick a part a child who has obviously been taught or has learned to respect the office of the presidency. THIS BOOK IS BIPARTISAN...the reviewer mentioning CSPAN interview is not.
This book seems to be for all ages who want to know really interesting things about Presidents, their families, the office, secret service, the white house...you name it! FABULOUS!!!!!! When is the First Lady Book coming out?
Background Check.......2006-12-25
Just saw the child-author, Mccullough, a Texan, discuss his book on CSPAN2 (BOOK TV).He unsold this book to me the moment he revealed his admiration for George W. Bush and Tom Delay. This potential purchaser is curious to discover what true facts were used in the George W. section.
I suspect the 9/11 Commission and the Iraq Study Group would be a helpful resource for Mccullough, but citing his affection for Bush is evidence those two primary resources were more than likely not on his reading list.
Wonderful Book.......2006-03-24
I am a teacher and I purchased this book for my classroom. I felt it was a wonderful book for children, not only for its educational value, but because it was written by a child.

Excellent study of military technology.......1999-03-27
Although the story of the role of technology in the defeat of german U-boats in the Battle of the Atalantic has often been told, the role of HF-DF (huff-duff) has usually been slighted. This book corrects that situation. Secret Weapon is an important new contribution in out understanding of the battle of the Atlantic, and an archetype of contemporary history of military technology. (From a longer review that appeared in the New York Military Affairs Symposium Newsletter).
Interesting review of the fielding of ship mounted HFDF........1999-01-08
Reviews the source of technology and fielding of marine mobile HFDF used in ASW during WWII, parimarly in the Atlantic. Does not cover land based systems in the same depth which was dissappointing to this reader. Hints at the technology but does not specify the actual techniques employed. Does, however does provide an analysis of the impact of ship born HFDF towards countering German U Boat activity. Overall interesting reading ! Book Description
The idea of universal rights is often understood as the product of Europe, but as Laurent Dubois demonstrates, it was profoundly shaped by the struggle over slavery and citizenship in the French Caribbean. Dubois examines this Caribbean revolution by focusing on Guadeloupe, where, in the early 1790s, insurgents on the island fought for equality and freedom and formed alliances with besieged Republicans. In 1794, slavery was abolished throughout the French Empire, ushering in a new colonial order in which all people, regardless of race, were entitled to the same rights.
But French administrators on the island combined emancipation with new forms of coercion and racial exclusion, even as newly freed slaves struggled for a fuller freedom. In 1802, the experiment in emancipation was reversed and slavery was brutally reestablished, though rebels in Saint-Domingue avoided the same fate by defeating the French and creating an independent Haiti.
The political culture of republicanism, Dubois argues, was transformed through this transcultural and transatlantic struggle for liberty and citizenship. The slaves-turned-citizens of the French Caribbean expanded the political possibilities of the Enlightenment by giving new and radical content to the idea of universal rights.
Customer Reviews:
A must read to understanding how the Caribbean was shaped.......2006-12-29
The end of slavery in the French Caribbean is a story that has many facets. This book looks at one of the smaller islands (Guadalupe) and tracks its progress as it tries to free itself from the grips of slavery. Dubios tells a very good story and it is well written. The book focuses on Guadalupe but also gives a sense of what is happening in the entire British and French Caribbean. Dubios in her other books really provides a complete picture of what is occurring in the Caribbean and they are all recommended.
