    Book Description

Renowned as the final refuge of Paul Gauguin, the Marquesas Islands northeast of Tahiti are home to the Enata, a Polynesian people who developed one of the most extraordinary traditions of sculpture and decorative art in the Pacific. This book features works, including many previously unpublished, from the Metropolitan and other museums and private collections, and it explores the fascinating ways in which Marquesan art embodied and enhanced secular and religious life.
Created to honor the archipelago’s diverse gods and ancestors, adorn the bodies of its people, and decorate everyday objects, art in the Marquesas encompassed virtually every aspect of sacred and secular life. Marquesan art is celebrated for its elegant stylization of the human image and intricately decorated surfaces, while also displaying an astonishing diversity of forms that range from robust figural sculpture in wood and stone to the most elaborate tattooing in the Pacific.

                5 out of 5 stars Apocalypse Chow.......2007-09-07

This is a great book for areas that are subject to natural disasters or electrical blackouts where you might have to rely on one-burner cooking. If you like cooking and eating good food, this is a great book even if the lights do stay on. I gave my sister this book along with the Storm Gourmet and she liked Apocalypse Chow the best.

                1 out of 5 stars HUH?.......2007-07-07

This book is for the new age, chi-chi. I am a fairly literate man, many of the items mentioned in the book are foreign to me. What is a mandoline?
A mezzaluna? A sudare? Does one need a zester in a calamity? What are basmati pilafs, panchrattan, guanabana and giardiniera? Why would I need to stock several versions of artichoke parts? And of course being closer to a carnivore than anything else, where's the beef? Vegetarian cooking is not something I'd ordinarily do while my faculties are intact. I should have been given that option.
This book was represented to be a help for the average person to smooth over the trauma of adverse conditions through cooking. My take on it is that the this book will be fuel. One of the few good tips gleaned from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Disaster prep can be fun.......2007-06-14

I admit, I bought this book because of the funny title! I haven't tried any recipes yet. The recipes, though vegetarian, look delicious and simple; and I admire the author's approach--why spend 2 weeks living on Spam and cold baked beans, when, with a little forethought, you can be the envy of your block (though I don't think I'd let 'em know we were chowing down in this fashion! Could get ugly!)? You could add canne dmeats to many of the recipes, as well. I particulary enjoyed the author's sense of humor--I've read many disaster prep books, and never encountered humor in any of them. Fave quotes: (regarding "astronaut"/freeze-dried meals)"If your kids are very young, or simply just not too bright, you could tell them you're ordering take-out from Mars" and, "...spending all day slaving over a hot butane stove." Also, the entries on dealing with insurance companies, and the waiting game they play are fun, as well. Most books don't touch upon this, and the crushing boredom and friction that occur when the power has been off for a week.

4 out of 5 stars Witty resource on how to eat well when the lights go out.......2006-12-15

This witty book, co-authored by spouses Jon and Robin Robertson, provides a sense of how one might eat well "when the power goes out." "Apocalypse Chow" provides much useful information, in the event that natural disasters like hurricanes or pandemic flu knock out power, water supplies, and so on.

Concrete suggestions abound, such as the need to acquire some sort of cooking system (camping stove, gas grills, and so on), the need to stow away adequate water, check lists of kitchen tools needed in case the power goes off, what to buy for one's pantry. Neat side items: a five-day menu (pages 61-64), as a part of what they call the "five day wine box" (the authors argue that you can put a set of five days worth of meals for 4 people in a wine box).

For whom they refer to as "the truly lazy" (page 68), they note the availability of MREs (Meals Ready to Eat), and provide places where one can purchase these (akin to the military's chow for combat conditions), freeze dried meals (and, again, places where one can order these), "Supermarket Ready to Eats" (food in cardboard boxes, like macaroni and cheese, that store well and are easy to make). In addition, they encourage canned foods that last a long time.

This brief, easy to read, and witty volume is a useful resource for those concerned about disasters (whether natural or manmade) that might disrupt normal access to food and water, power, and so on.

                2 out of 5 stars Highbrow.......2006-08-26

                Book Description

The classic television series Space Patrol was a stellar success for ABC from 1950 to 1955. As a pioneer in the hair-raising world of live television, the show had a huge fan base of both children and adults. The magic hinged on the cast: Commander Buzz Corry, Cadet Happy, Carol, Major Robertson and Tonga—five 30th-century personalities whose lives entwined with soap opera strength as they undertook "missions of daring in the name of interplanetary justice." A personal appearance by the cast at a Los Angeles department store drew 30,000 fans. But TV viewers had no idea that the actors and crew faced dramatic as well as galactic peril. In the course of producing an action-packed show live before the nation, with special effects in their infancy, what could go wrong usually did. Ed Kemmer, a real-life World War II fighter pilot shot down and captured by Nazis, who later starred as Commander Corry, learned to improvise for nervous, tongue-tied guest actors and to lean casually against scenery about to fall.

This book recounts stories of early television and the risk-taking ABC crew who invented equipment and ingenious special effects that laid the groundwork for TV today. It tells of the personal heroics of Kemmer and other cast members, both on- and off-screen. Included are interviews with Kemmer, as well as TV writer Norman Jolley (who penned many classic series, including Wagon Train); director Dick Darley; radio writer Lou Huston; and veteran announcers Jack Narz and Dick Tufeld. (Tufeld once announced the Grammy Awards from a men's restroom—the tile walls and floor provided a great reverberating acoustic venue). The book also profiles William "Mike" Moser, the show's creator, and provides details about how the early shows came together and the events in the first year that took Space Patrol from a local station to the network. Many details are given about the adventure that was putting on a live television show along with live commercials. Stories from fans demonstrate how Space Patrol gave them ideals and values they still hold today. The book explores changes in television that led to the demise of action-adventure shows that featured strong role models and tells how Kemmer, who portrayed the heroic Buzz Corry, came to terms with his impact on countless young lives. (Fifty years later, he was still receiving letters from grateful fans.) Included are episode guides covering the 210 half-hour network TV shows, as well as the radio shows, and memorabilia collectors can feast on the galaxy's most complete guide to Space Patrol premiums.

5 out of 5 stars "Blast from the Past".......2007-08-27

This is a very nice book for those of us who grew up watching Space Patrol. Well written - information on the show, its production, the cast as well as the products that you could get by sending in 'box tops', etc.

Wonderful photos of the cast, as well as models of the sets/rockets and props. A chronological listing of the TV shows as well as the Radio ones. Very nice addition to a collection of information on Science Fiction on the airwaves.

5 out of 5 stars Long Time Space Patrol Fan.......2007-03-12

At first I thought that the price of the book was excessive, however, upon deciding to spend the money I feel it was well spent. If you, like me, grew up with early television this book will take you back to a time when the world was simplier and TV was a miracle.

The author of "Space Patrol: Missions of Daring in the Name of Early Television" has taken a long and loving look at one of the best Sci Fi programs of the 1950's. The information gathered is informative, refresing, and above all (to my knowledge) never before put in print. The interviews with former cast members is a delight, and the behind the scenes look gives you and idea of how the then infact television industry operated.

I recommend spending the $49.00 and take a trip back in time and re-live your youth with Buzz Corey, Cadet Happy, Carol Carlyle, Major Robinson, and Tonga... its worth it.

                5 out of 5 stars What a Fantastic Book!.......2006-03-08

Some might think it's a waste of time to read a book about a television show that one never saw. But, although I never saw an episode of "Space Patrol" (it had gone off the air before I was five years old), this is one of the best books I've read in years. A 20-year labor-of-love, it clearly reflects the author's interest and dedication to the subject. She managed to interview virtually all of the surviving cast and production crew members, and their anecdotes bring the story of this live-action television series from the early 1950s to life. It's packed with details about the characters, the performers, the production challenges, the sets, the special effects and the marketing of spin-off toys. Even better, it examines the positive effects that "Space Patrol" had on children of the time, some of whom, inspired by the show, grew up to be NASA engineers, "rocket scientists" and astronauts. Back in the days of clear-cut moral values and before political correctness reared its ugly head, the "Space Patrol" crew served as excellent role models for the first of the baby-boomers. Reading this book will transport anyone who grew up in that era back to a simpler time when the world was a more pleasant place to live and when there were well-defined good guys and bad guys. It's a great read about a fascinating subject--highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Pop Culture As History.......2005-05-26

Bassior's book is an intimate slice of history. On the surface, it may seem trivial to examine the story of a hit TV show from half a century ago, but in her two decades of unrelenting research, the result of Jean-Noel Bassior's dilligence (while maintaining her career as a top-level journalist) is a book that set out to document an ephemeral pop culture phenomenon, and became a supremely positive inspiration to a generation who went on to live lives by a sincere code of ethics, and some of whom made Neil Armstrong's "small step" possible. Inside the story, the star of the show, Commander Corry turns out to be actor Ed Kemmer, a bona fide World War Two hero.

In short, this book is a unique, intimate look at a pop culture phenomenon, and the remarkable people who made it happen.

5 out of 5 stars An involving in-depth coverage .......2005-04-09

Before Star Trek popularized TV, there was Space Patrol, a science fiction television show which ran from 1950-1955 when space travel was even more of a dream. In Space Patrol: Missions Of Daring In The Name Of Early Television, Jean-Noel Bassior provides interviews with the Space Patrol cast and background workers, including episode logs for TV and radio shows, and even provides a guide to surviving memorabilia from the show. Recollections from actors, vintage black and white photos from the show, and accounts of early television programming challenges and follies makes for an involving in-depth coverage - even for those who have long missed the series.

5 out of 5 stars Snyder in Perfect Form.......2007-09-27

I was given this book as a gift and had very little interest in Blackjack, but by the time I finished reading it, I was hooked. This book gives an amazingly interesting and complete history of the game, from its very beginnings. So many things were in this book that I have since not been able to find as complete anywhere. Arnold Snyder seems like the authority on the subject and must have done a good amount of research and/or collecting to compile all this information.

Along with the history, it also shows how to play, different variations, and tons of things I didn't expect at all. I learned to play blackjack from this book and it was a great teacher, though I recommend it more for the history aspects. This book is absolutely invaluable and should be on any blackjack player, fan, or fanatic's bookshelf.

Arnold Snyder can help you achieve just that in his Big Book of Blackjack.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book for players of all levels.......2006-03-09

Ok, so you think you have read all the books on BJ and now you are all that.

Well, think again. If you have not at least peeped out the first six chapters of the Big Book of BlackJack you are not all that. As a fool who has read more than his fair share of blackjack books I figured that this book would be more of the same. Blackjack starting at Thorp and ending in some half assed explanations of advanced techniques. Well, I was way wrong. In the Big Book of Blackjack Thorp doesn't even appear until chapter three. Have you ever wondered where our beloved games origins are really from? I have for one have often wondered about this very question and to my surprise Arnold has done some great research for us and given us many facts and clues to the origins of the game we all love. I am not going to spill the beans so to speak but I feel very educated as to the who and where in days of past our game stems from due to reading the history section of the book.

You learn about vingt-un and also some of the early players of the game from Napoleon to Madame Mustache. Ok, knowing the history of the origins of the game isn't going to make you a master advantage player but it is very interesting to say the least. Like they say you don't know who you are until you look into your past and if you are or hope to be an advantage player this is your past.

Of course none of the modern history of Thorp is discounted or dismissed. The book just shows us that there is more to the story than just Thorp. A lot of positive things were taking place pre-Thorp. The way the book gives this history is awesome for the fact that it sheds great light on the reasons as to why many of the modern greats are greats. It's all tied together in the end on the chapter on the blackjack hall of famers. For example, the modern history lesson of hall of famers shows how Ken Uston may have been a great hype man but that Al Francesco is really the man. Anyone who could be stabbed in the back like that and not be a drama queen is very commendable.

The Big Book goes on to explain the basics, card counting, how to beat side bets, and other advanced techniques. I also enjoyed the chapter on the hall of famers. (too bad James Grosjean didn't make it in the book). What ever your level of play or knowledge this book should be a definite addition to your library.

There are so many books out on BJ that it is mind boggling. I'm not trying to be a shill or anything but I truly recommend this book to players of all levels because it truly has info that you can't find in any other BJ books.

                  Book Description

In his award-winning novels and stories, John McGahern (one of “the greatest Irish writers”—The New York Times Book Review) explores the ordinary lives of men and women to reveal the intricate workings of the human heart and mind. Now, in All Will Be Well, he turns to his own life, telling the story of his childhood in the Irish countryside and the beginnings of his life as a writer.

McGahern grew up the eldest of seven children in County Leitrim, where North and South meet under the Iron Mountains. His early years were marked by his father’s violent nature, the selflessness of his mother—a teacher of uncommon independence—and the tragedy of her death when McGahern was only nine. With extraordinary poignancy, he describes her and how her love remained a source of strength for him and his siblings, helping them to survive their father’s tyrannical rule and, ultimately, enabling them to break free into their own lives.

McGahern traces his career as a writer as it takes him increasingly far from home—to Dublin, London, Paris, Helsinki, Spain, the United States—before it brings him back to the almost unchanged landscape in which he had grown up and which had indelibly shaped his life and work. His lyrical descriptions of the fields and quiet roads of his home catch the subtle beauty of one of Ireland’s least known counties, while his portraits of its inhabitants are drawn with great insight and tenderness. “The people and the language and landscape…were like my breathing.”

All Will Be Well is a haunting, illuminating memoir.

5 out of 5 stars An exemplary life led..........2007-07-12

John McGahern's memoir summarises the leitmotifs of his fictional works, where recurring themes of abused children, put-upon wives, and dominating, "old-school" husbands are echoed here. Indeed, one can trace the genesis of the themes of his novels from the people, places, and circumstances that provide the unity of his prose in "All Will Be Well".
And the kind of man and writer into which McGahern matured is elegantly presented in this quote (p. 87):
"I am sure it is from those days that I take the belief that the best of life is life lived quietly, where nothing happens but our calm journey through the day, where change is imperceptible and the precious life is everything".

4 out of 5 stars Silence, exile, cunning return, along with endurance.......2006-07-11

I have read all of McGahern's work, and sadly this is the last such exactingly prepared book that I presume will appear under his name. Any reader of The Dark, The Leavetaking, or By the Lake (aka That They May Face the Rising Sun) will find much here to document how McG hacked out from his own servitude much of the raw material for his justly praised prose constructions. Most deeply rooted in the straitened years of the 40s and 50s excavated here are seeds of what blossomed into his first novel The Barracks and his later success Amongst Women. The tone, shared with his fiction, often is shadowed more than sunny. This does make for a challenging read in parts, notably as the book goes on and McG battles with his father after the death (halfway through the book, when the author was nine) of his beloved mother.

The grimness of great stretches of this memoir makes it sobering for any naive reader expecting a rural idyll romanticized. I would have edited more of the micro-detail that McG presents, as not all of it is germane to his larger arc, although he labors long in providing the meticulous array of details and spare dialogue to pace his vignettes. McG is known for his concerted rewritings and revisions of his work before publication. Perhaps his early death, soon after this memoir appeared, may account for the hastier (only by comparison with his other works, spaced out often over decades rather than years) appearance of "All Will be Well." Intriguing to find that the British version that appeared first is titled only "Memoir;" terse contrast with the more poetic and much more fitting "That They May Face the Rising Sun" title abroad of his final novel that for Americans was redubbed the less evocative if also enigmatic "By the Lake."

The lack of breaks in the autobiography deepens the feeling of unrelenting struggle engaged in by the narrator. You feel more trapped in the telling of his difficult coming of age. Beauty and sorrow tumble one after the other. You never know which will appear next as you read--he recreates the surprises and terrors of anyone's life, no matter, as he says, how softly led. "I am sure it is from these days that I take the belief that the best of life is lived quietly, where nothing happens but our calm journey through the day, where change is imperceptible and the precious life is everything." (87)

But the book is lopsided. Presumably intentionally, for perhaps McGahern anticipated a sequel? However, as half the book takes place only up to his ninth year, the remaining couple of decades rush by with alarming brevity. The author does not have intimations of being such until he's late in his teens, and this occurs first on p. 217 of a 290 pp. account.

Necessarily and deliberately, McG's young adulthood and the start of his career is compressed into much less space. I would have preferred much more attention to his maturation as a writer than the extreme emphasis paid his early formation. I understand the polarity of his parental positions and how they marked irreperably McG's own soul, but if more follow-through had been given to how he wrested himself free of the restraints of his family and his nation would have made for a more memorable, and also less suddenly fast-forwarded, depiction of himself. (This portrait of the artist as a young man conveys shades of Stephen Dedalus at the end of Portrait; like Stephen, McG too returns, however, to Ireland after overseas self-exile has not fully freed the artistic imagination from its first inspiration.) Yet, McGahern knows that he cannot stand apart smugly from his inherited legacy, in its joys and its sorrows, and he comes to accept this if not find comfort in it later in his telling.

Despite its uneven pace, this story will endure as an self-penned and as always in such books, a prematurely engraved epitaph. McGahern's courage in standing up for himself against the powers of Church, School, and State makes for engrossing if often reticently told autobiography. Refusing the comforts of faith as he grows, he nonetheless is fair-minded and balanced in crediting the good that the Church instilled in him during very dark years. Never concealing the sins, but noticing too the comforts, he looks at himself with as much detachment as he does others, no easy feat, considering what we now know would have been his last couple of years (dying at seventy of cancer)as he wrote this memoir.

He hides as much as he exposes, the privilege of any teller of one's own tale. This is recommended for those already familiar with his fiction, as his early publications find only bare mention here, but a grounding in his harsh and bracing, and later more nuanced and forgiving, tales is necessary if you wish to savor all the textures here evident, poignantly, in the last two pages. He spent a decade on By the Lake, and his craft is never hurried or unmeditated. As with his last novel, the conclusion to "All Will Be Well" ends this intense narrative elegantly and powerfully.

                  5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-05-17

This story, so beautifully told, of McGahern's family is like a microcosm of Ireland in the 1940s and 50s: the rough indifference of his callous father alongside the selfless warmth of his mother. So it was in Ireland during that time: an era marked on the one hand by the cruel exclusion of those who did not buckle to the rigid demands of society, in contrast to much altruism and a shared sense of decency.
How McGahern didn't emerge a bitter man from his childhood (the latter part of which was dominated by his father) is beyond me. But it seems that he chose to build on the strengths inherited from his mother and to disregard the rest.
He writes beautifully. His descriptions of the rituals of country life, the ordinary events and day-to-day struggles, are conveyed in a way that manages to be both simple and sublime. About his mother he writes with honesty and heartbreaking grace. It is a book to keep and reread.

                  5 out of 5 stars Seamless Crossover.......2006-04-19

McGahern's memoir is a lovely block of tender writing. It's the kind of writing you can smell. He talks of lanes and fields and the way he describes them make you nostrils flutter. It's strong stuff at times and you can see where some of his fictional characters (especially Moran) had their birth. It's a intricate look into this man's life. It's real and there's no egos here just stark realism.

4 out of 5 stars Death of an Irish giant........2006-03-31

Though McGahern is not well known in the United States, his books were very influential in Irish literature. His early work, "The Dark", a family saga including an abusive father and a seductive priest, was banned in Ireland in the 1950's. He was forced to find work in London and the United States before returning to Ireland.

This memoir, particularly focusing on his childhood years is strangely flat in places, but where it illuminates is in his relationship to his mother, and, in the true Irish fashion; his relationship to her MEMORY. She takes on a quietly iconic status, so that, even though she died when he was 8 years old, her influence is all over his writing.

He reminds one of another great Irish writer of an earlier era, Patrick Kavanaugh. Both deal with rural Ireland of bygone times. Both are past-haunted. There is none of the squalid, almost humourous tone of Frank McCourt. McGahern has more dignity. The manipulative nature of his relationship with his father is also a dominant theme. His father was an "old" Irish male, a rigid police sergeant who lived in the Gardai barracks most of his married life. The clash of wills and ideals is palpable between the two men. McGahern was transformed by his writing into something which transcended his tortured youth.

I heard of his death today. Perhaps he will receive his worldwide recognition postumously. He certainly deserves it.

In this detailed and fascinating study of Napoleon's ten-week incursion into Palestine and Syria, Schur (historian and author) brings to life the key events between February and May 1799. Using numerous eyewitness accounts he outlines the impact of the invading French armies on the region.

                        5 out of 5 stars Fascinating stuff........2003-04-11

Anyone interested in the Napoleonic period would know for starters that this book covers a campaign given scant attention elsewhere. What came as a pleasant surprise to me was that this is also one of the most enjoyable of books written on any of Napoleon's campaigns. Its a very fast read, has good maps, and gets right to the action. Clear, concise, and impartial is Schur's style. The book has a useful appendix of eyewitness reports, and the bibliography includes many works unavailable in English. I am no student of the Middle East, but I would think this book would be of value to anyone interested in the history of Palestine, or the Ottoman Empire. From the Napoleonic angle the only thing I bring into this is the experience of reading several dozen books on the man's campaigns, and frankly most of them are just not fun to read. This one is.

4 out of 5 stars By the steps into the Holy Land.......2000-01-14

The book is very interesting and contains a lot of material from the Israeli historian point of wiev. N. Schur argues that the French historians are disregarding the eyewitness' material and accounts of the events. However, the author disregarded the military structure and organization of the French Army of the Orient - there were no brigades or regiments back then, but always demi-brigades by regalement of 1794; the rank colonel been restored by Napoleon only in 1803, and so on. When citing the magnificent work of la Jonquere, it is always good to check additional references, and specifically the articles published by the French military historian Rigo ( in various issues of Tradition or Uniformes magazines).
