Book Description
This book focuses on the work of African American artists during the Depression and the war years (1929-1945), when government-sponsored programs such as the WPA led to a general resurgence in artistic production throughout the United States.
The catalogue features the work of Robert Blackburn, Raymond Steth, Horace Woodroff, and Dox Trash, among others, with a smaller selection of paintings and watercolors by such notable artists as Horace Pippin, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, and Bill Traylor. Included are essays on the work in its cultural context and on printmaking techniques. Most of the works in this volume are recent acquisitions of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and have not been previously published.

A hilarious collection of lists, statistics, news items, quotations, and facts detailing stupid acts of Americans from all walks of life—by the authors of the bestselling The 776 Stupidest Things Ever Said
Everyone knows that America is “the land of the free and the home of the brave,” but sometimes that means we’re free to be as bravely stupid as we want! In Unusually Stupid Americans, Kathryn Petras and Ross Petras assemble choice bits of stupidity, U.S.A.-style, including
•the top seriously flawed American advertising moments, including Pacific Airlines’ brilliant “You’re scared of flying? So’s our pilot!” ad campaign, which led the airline to bankruptcy within two months of the campaign’s inception
•the Martin Luther King, Jr., celebration in Florida, where a plaque was un-veiled that was intended to honor the actor James Earl Jones but instead read, “Thank you James Earl Ray for keeping the dream alive” (an unfortunate slip-up, as James Earl Ray was King’s assassin)
•and much more!

Well, call it 3.5 stars.......2007-08-20
Lots of little vignettes about various stupid, inefficient, or outright criminal things going on in American life. No one is spared, like the Simpsons or South Park they are equal opportunity offenders. Big government, big business, and mom and pop alike all have their foibles pointed out and their less brilliant decisions skewered. Lots of stats, lots of examples, breezy writing style- it's a great afternoon read or, more likely, a book to be picked up here and there and read randomly. It won't change your life, but it actually has quite a few important points to make in the midst of all the overall silliness. Most of all it is what you want in a humor book; it's actually funny.
I have more fund at 'news of the weird'.......2007-04-03
Very typical trash written only to make money. I didn't buy it, I read some of it at my daughter's house.
Biting criticism.......2007-01-10
The book is initially funny but after a few pages becomes boringI .
Funny collection of acts made by stupid Americans!.......2004-11-23
There's a statistic that says that one out of every three people out there in the nation is stupid. Consequently, if you look to the left and then look to the right . . . and if either person isn't stupid . . . then you must be the one who is.
I thought of this when I read UNUSUALLY STUPID AMERICANS by Kathryn Petras and Ross Petras . . . this is a funny collection of lists, statistics, news items, quotations, and facts detailing stupid acts of Americans from all walks of life.
I laughed out loud at many of these . . . furthermore, they got me thinking about what if the authors included examples from around the world . . . methinks that they'd have enough material
for at least several books that I know that I'd certainly want to get.
What amazed me most was the fact that some of the "contributions" were from folks who otherwise were pretty bright . . . for example, award-winning adman Stan Freberg wrote the following-a full-page newspaper ad for a small Pacific Airline. Two months after the campaign
started, the airline went bankrupt. Perhaps the ad was involved.
Hey there! You with the sweat in your palms. It's about time an airline faced up to something. Most people are scared witless of flying. Deep down inside, every time that big plane lifts off that runway, you wonder if this is it, right? You want to know something, fella? So does the pilot, deep down
inside.
There were several other amusing tidbits; among them:
Three New Jersey townships--Upper Pittsgrove, Alloway and Quinton--in 1993 contracted for elevator inspectors, as per the orders of the state Department of Community Affairs (DCA). One problem: There are no elevators in any of the three towns. That's no excuse, according to a DCA
spokesman. The towns have to get and pay for inspectors, "otherwise, the Uniform Construction Code would no longer be uniform."
Lauderhill, Florida, held a ceremony in tribute to Martin Luther King's life at which a plaque honoring actor and activist James Earl Jones was unveiled. It read: Thank you James Earl Ray for keeping the dream alive. Unfortunately, James Earl Ray was Martin Luther King's
assassin.
There have been a number of complaints and lawsuits concerning secondhand smoke but perhaps none as mind-boggling as this one:
A Floridian filed a complaint with the state Division of Consumer Services, upset that he had been exposed to secondhand smoke.
He had attended a live theater performance of Noel Cowards' PRIVATE LIVES--and the actors on stage had, as the script dictated, been smoking.
American Outrageousness.......2004-05-10
Brother and sister act Kathryn and Ross Petras have made a name for themselves in the publishing business by writing books about the silly, the outrageous, and the incredibly stupid members of society. This book follows that trend with chapters on stupidity as it relates to government, law, business, education, entertainment, taxes, and other subjects.
Some of the quotes and acts of silliness presented here were committed by well- known entertainers, politicians, sports personalities, and other famous people and they make for some of the book's most memorable and funniest moments. Al Gore, Bill Gates, Justine Bateman, Bob Ney (Ohio Republican representative), and other members of the fraternal order of the rich and famous are quoted in the book at length, showing how they either made a silly- sounding comment or twisted the truth to get themselves out of trouble.
Not all of the comments and acts of zaniness involved in this book center around the well-to-do. There are plenty of quotes and acts of stupidity committed by ordinary people too. And some of them will have you rolling on the floor with laughter while others will have you a little bit concerned about the condition of Americans and politics in general. Most of the stuff included in this book is flat out funny with nothing further to contemplate. But other things make you wonder if certain laws and/or conventional wisdom have gone too far. Like the case of some kids in a school getting arrested for allegedly possessing and distributed an illegal substance that turned out to be a package of grape kool- aid. Or a woman who stole a firecracker from someone's home, mistook it for a candle, was injured when it blew up, and then sued the homeowners for not labeling the stolen good as a firecracker.
Each chapter of this book is laid out in a reference- style format, with highlighted and bulleted text. In addition to the stupid sayings and actions, there are also lists that are unusual and often very funny. Like the "most unusual items ever auctioned at Ebay" or the "worst vehicles ever manufactured".
Overall, this is a fun and entertaining book that makes a great way to pass the time and a nice idea for a gift. It presents some of the unusual, wacky, and silly antics that famous people and ordinary Americans partake in each and every day.

Bollywood is the national cinema of India. This invaluable introduction to the best of the genre discusses the work of key directors, major stars, music directors, and screenplay writers. Historically important films have been included along with certain cult movies and top box office successes, including Mother India, the national epic of a peasant woman's struggle against nature and society; Sholay, a "curry western" where the all-star cast sing and dance; Dilwale Dulhaniya le jayenge, the greatest of the diaspora films in which two British Asians fall in love while vacationing in Europe before going to India, where they show their elders how to incorporate love into family traditions; Junglee, in which love transforms a savage who yells "Yahoo!" before singing and dancing like Elvis and creating a new youth culture; and Pyaasa, dramatically shot in black and white and portraying a romantic poet who suffers for his art in the material world.
Book Description
In this user-friendly book, Grandmaster Neil McDonald goes back to basics, studying the fundamental principles of the Dutch Defence and its many variations. Throughout the book there are an abundance of notes, tips, warnings, and exercises to help improving players, while key strategies, ideas, and tactics for both sides are clearly illustrated.
Customer Reviews:
It's OK to begin with the Dutch defence.......2007-01-20
In a very few pages the book teach the most general ideas of the Stonewall, Classical and Leningrad Dutch defence.
Of course the people who are an advanced player of the Dutch will found the book a little poor. But the beginners who want to learn the general ideas of this active defence will found it interesting.
Not bad, though lacking.......2007-01-04
This is a good book for starting on the Dutch. One thing, though, it does not provide enough games and options for the variants discussed, so once one choose to play something from the book, say the Leningrad variation, a lot of home-work is left for the student, or a complementary book is required.
The style, however, is flowing and entertaining, and there are some good tips in the book.
somewhat eccentric but fun!.......2006-01-30
I've been curious about this opening for some time and knew that anything from the Starting Out series would be a comfortable place to start.
The three sections are very well explained as the author knows his stuff. I found I had a lot of the book's games that had been annotated by the ChessPub site and it was interesting comparing the comments.
It was fun trying the easier Classical Dutch in some club level games against a Reti and an English but the Leningrad will have to wait.
Worth a look!
Exemplatory work on dutch.......2005-10-22
I have a few books from Neil McDonald, and they are nice works, especially the book Starting Out:The English. But i was really plesently surprised with this title. Chapters are written in best possible order for new dutch fan to follow, starting with nice introduction, then some offbeat chapters, which are nevertheless funny to follow, especially for the new student to incorporate them for future use, and following are three main parts of the book. In every game of every chapter there is a lot of explanations of plans and warning of possibility of cheap tactics. Book is written out of love for the opening from the author, and that is immidiately felt. Unlike many of todays opening books unfortunately. My recommendation.
McDonald's Dutch Treat!.......2005-03-04
This is a superb introductory book about the Dutch Defence. It is appropriate for chess players of a wide variety of strengths: the Dutch is a good defence for a beginner to learn. I started out with it, having read Botvinnik's book (One Hundred Selected Games). And I still play it sometimes as Black, after 1 Nf3 f5 (what I play if White continues with 2 e4 I'll leave to your imagination). Occasionally, I also get into the Dutch after inviting a Meran Defence with 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e6 3 Nc3 c6. If White now plays 4 e3, I may well reply 4...f5. Others get into the Dutch the way Botvinnik did, by inviting a French Defence with 1 d4 e6 and then (when White plays 2 c4) replying 2...f5. Those who want to get into a "Leningrad Dutch" (makes me wonder when the Dutch will finally invade Russia and capture Leningrad) sometimes start with 1 d4 d6. Of course, they play a Pirc or a Modern Defence if White plays 2 e4.
Reading this book, I got the idea that playing the Dutch means never having to say "I resign!" You simply play on until mate. It isn't tough, generally only one or two more moves.
McDonald is a great chess teacher. He begins by warning us about gambit attacks on the Dutch. Here, he cites an Awful Example: 1 d4 f5 2 h3 Nf6 3 g4 fxg4 4 hxg4 Nxg4 5 Qd3 Nf6? 6 Rxh7 Rxh7 7 Qg6 mate. That was quick! He tells us to play 3...d5 here and avoid this mess.
He gives more examples of gambit lines, such as the hilarious game 1 d4 f5 2 e4 fxe4 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 Bg5 e6? 5 Nxe4 Be7 6 Bxf6! Bxf6 7 Nf3 0-0 8 Bd3 b6 9 Ne5 Bb7 10 Qh5 Qe7 11 Qxh7+! Kh7 12 Nxf6+ Kh6 13 Neg4+ Kg5 14 h4+ Kf4 15 g3+ Kf3 16 Be2+ Kg2 17 Rh2+ Kg1 (do I get a new King for reaching the 8th rank?) 18 Kd2 mate. We also see some games with 2 Bg5. One of the few lines McDonald omits is 2 Qd3, but 2...d5 is a solid reply here of course.
The author spends some useful time on the Stonewall variation. All Dutch players need to be familiar with its ideas, because it may be best to transpose into them. One terrific example is, of course, with Botvinnik playing Black. 1 d4 e6 2 c4 f5 3 g3 Nf6 4 Bg2 Bb4+ 5 Bd2 Be7 6 Nc3 0-0 7 Qc2 d5! 8 Nf3 c6 9 0-0 Qe8 10 Bf4 Qh5 11 Rae1 Nbd7 12 Nd2 g5! By now, White was ripped. Black simply built up an attack and then ... built up a bigger attack and then ... built up an even bigger attack and finally checkmated White. This is a very instructive game. We also see another example, with Torre as Black: 1 d4 e6 2 Nf3 f5 3 g3 Nf6 4 Bg2 d5 5 0-0 Bd6 6 c4 c6 7 Qc2 0-0 8 b3 Ne4 9 Bb2 Nd7 10 Ne5 Qf6 11 f3 Nxe5 12 dxe5? Bc5+ 13 Kh1 Ng3+ 14 hxg3 Qh6+ 15 Bh3 Qxh3 mate.
We are taught about Knight outposts for both sides, and shown Awful examples of what can happen to Black, such as Black being dead lost in an endgame with a Bishop on e8 and eight blockaded pawns against White's Knight on e5 and seven pawns.
We see examples of how to play the Classical Variation, such as 1 d4 f5 2 g3 Nf6 3 Bg2 e6 4 Nf3 d6 5 0-0 Be7 6 c4 0-0 7 Nc3 Qe8 8 Re1 Qg6 9 Qc2 Ne4 10 Nxe4 fxe4 11 Nd2 e3 12 White resigns.
And we see examples of how to play the Leningrad. This includes the amusing line 1 d4 f5 2 c4 Nf6 3 Nc3 g6 4 h4 d6 5 h5 Nxh5 6 Rxh5 gxh5 7 e4 Qd7 8 Qxh5+ Kd8 9 Nf3 Qe8 (who set up this chessboard?).
My favorite of McDonald's Leningrad examples is 1 d4 d6 2 Nf3 g6 3 c4 Bg7 4 Nc3 f5 5 g3 Nf6 6 Bg2 0-0 7 0-0 Nc6 8 d5 Ne5 9 Nxe5 dxe5 10 e4 Nd7 11 exf5 gxf5 12 f4 e4 13 Be3? Nf6 14 Qd2 Bd7 15 Rfd1 Qe8 16 Bd4 Qg6 17 Bf1 h5 18 Qg2 Ng4 19 Bxg7 Kxg7 20 Rd2 c5 21 Nd1 Rh8 22 h4 Kh6 23 Rc1 Rhg8 24 Rc3 Qd6 25 Be2 e5 26 Bxg4 exf4 (oh my!) 27 Bh3 f3 28 Qh2 f4 29 Kh1 fxg3 30 Qg1 Qf4 31 Bxd7 Qxh4+ 32 Rh2 g2+ 33 Qxg2 fxg2+ 34 Kg1 Qe1 mate.
This entire book is illuminating and easy to read. I recommend it to all of you who believe, as I do, that the Dutch has a right to exist.
Book Description
John Hope Franklin lived through America's most defining twentieth-century transformation, the dismantling of legally-protected racial segregation. A renowned scholar, he has explored that transformation in its myriad aspects, notably in his 3.5 million-copy bestseller, From Slavery to Freedom. And he was, and remains, an active participant. Born in 1915, he, like every other African American, could not but participate: he was evicted from whites-only train cars, confined to segregated schools, threatened-once with lynching-and consistently met with racism's denigration of his humanity. And yet he managed to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard, become the first black historian to assume a full-professorship at a white institution, Brooklyn College, be appointed chair of the University of Chicago's history department and, later, John B. Duke Professor at Duke University. He has reshaped the way African American history is understood and taught and become one of the world's most celebrated historians, garnering over 130 honorary degrees. But Franklin's participation was much more fundamental than that.
From his effort in 1934 to hand President Franklin Roosevelt a petition calling for action in response to the Cordie Cheek lynching, to his 1997 appointment by President Clinton to head the President's Initiative on Race, and continuing to the present, Franklin has influenced with determination and dignity the nation's racial conscience. Whether aiding Thurgood Marshall's preparation for arguing Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, marching to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965, or testifying against Robert Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court in 1987, Franklin has pushed the national conversation on race towards humanity and equality, a life-long effort that earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, in 1995. Intimate, at times revelatory, Mirror to America chronicles Franklin's life and this nation's racial transformation in the 20th century, and is a powerful reminder of the extent to which the problem of America remains the problem of color.

A Wonderful Walk Back in Time.......2007-08-26
Dr. Franklin is an excellent story teller as he describe the very minute details of his life. As one reads, you feel as if you are actually there as hen describes his life experiences. This is an important read because it teaches that although society has come so far in many ways, we still have a long way to go in the way of civility and kindness to others.
A good read on the African American struggle.......2007-05-26
This is a very good read if you are interested in racism and related struggles and accomplishments. Additionally, it provides a wonderful story of one man's life and his journey through white and black America.
It makes it all make sense.......2007-05-13
I couldn't put it down! I was very impressed with the thought-provoking, scholarly work of John Hope Franklin. His story is one that should be read by every American child. I am touched by his humility, intelligence, compassion and willingness to risk for the good of our people.
A master of history and anecdotes.......2007-03-01
Dr. John Hope Franklin is not only the Dean of African-American history studies, anyone who has ever had the honor of meeting him (as I did on three occasions) and hearing him speak (as I also did on three occasions), knows that he is also the King of Anecdotes. He knows how to tell 'em all right, and thankfully, some of the best ones from his repetoire are preserved in this book. His stories going back to the Tulsa Massacre of 1921 (where his father represented some of the vicitms in court), being a student at Fisk and Harvard in the 30s, serving on the research team of the historic Brown vs. Board case to end segregation, witnessing (and sometimes participating in) the Civil Rights movement, etc. etc. For an academian, he recounts all of this in a folksy manner that is fine for reading on the front porch or in a rocking chair b y the fireplace. A history lesson that goes down well.
A great American.......2007-01-27
This book provides an inspiring reminder that the struggle for equality forms the backbone of the American democratic ideal. Supremacy must be conquered in all its forms so that we can truly "Let America be America again, the land that has never yet been." (Langston Hughes) Franklin's odyssey provides the opportunity for white Americans like myself to understand the depth and gravity of our national dilemma and face up to the reality of our history, realizing how far we have come yet acknowledging how far we have still to go.

A fantastic book for anyone interested in Spetsnaz........2004-10-16
Though this book contains no pictures, it is an excellent account of Spetsnaz weapons, training, organization and tactics. It is split up into 15 chapters.
1. Spades and Men.
2. Spetsnaz and the GRU.
3. A history of Spetsnaz.
4. The Fighting Units of Spetsnaz.
5. The "Other People"
6. Athletes.
7. Selection and Training.
8. The Agent Network.
9. Weapons and Equipment.
10. Battle Training.
11. Behind Enemy Lines: Spetsnaz Tactics
12. Control and Combined Operations.
13. Spetsnaz and Deception.
14. Future prospects.
15. Spetsnaz's First World War.
Highly recommended for anyone wanting to learn about Spetsnaz.
NOTE! This book, and Survorov's other book, Spetsnaz: The Story of the Soviet SAS are one in the same. So only purchase one.
Good, by the author has done better.......2001-07-13
This is often too technical and not as captivating as his other books. Suvorov knows the devilish business of Soviet special agencies inside out, but really you only need to read The Aquarium to know all you need to know.
Not a waste of money, though, and could be a valuable aquisition for anyone seriously interested in Cold War history and Soviet special services.

Book Description
The first incendiary collection of stencils and graffiti from Banksy, presented and bound in a handy pocket sized high quality format. Rarely have art and politics been put to such fine, and overtly public, use. Mix the irony and juxtaposition of John Yates with the beauty of the finest aerosol art, and you'll have some idea of how good this really is. The reproductions are interspersed with an excellent array of quotes, statements, letters and a beginners guide to painting with stencils. Very, very good.

OOP Banksy .......2007-07-07
This little book is fantastic. It's pretty short but packed. Definitely pick it up if you find it for a decent price and are interested in street art/Banksy. I bought mine here about 2 years ago for maybe $20 and now I see it's selling for $200 here and going for $100 on eBay at the moment. Madness! Guess I should have picked up more..
Great little review of Banksy's work.......2007-01-05
This book is a wonderful and witty review of Bansky's work written by the artist himself. I also highly recommend "Cut It Out." Both books are somewhat hard to find, but can be purchased here on Amazon or for reasonable prices at another great design book website, You Work for Them. Bansky's hardcover book, "Wall and Piece" is another must have. Cheers!

I dont want to say too much because the art speaks for itself. Forcing the viewer to quit looking at their feet and observe the world around them. Don't accept what you see. BUY IT NOW AND CHANGE YOUR MIND!!

Book Description
By far the most authoritative and comprehensive work ever published on the birds of Africa. The Editors and artists have worked closely with the 16 authors of this volume--all internationally acknowledged experts on their bird families--to produce encyclopaedic accounts of each species.
This volume completes the non-passerines, dealing with all species occurring on the continent--residents and visitors alike--in the following families: parrots, turacos, cuckoos, owls, nightjars, swifts, colies, kingfishers and their allies, and woodpeckers and their allies. All are illustrated, and all known biological information is included. The passerines (songbirds) will be covered in four forthcoming volumes, already in preparation.
