Book Description

Now available in an attractively priced, beautifully produced flexi edition, this important examination of Modigliani's art focuses on the enigmatic genius of the avant-garde.

One of the most recognizable artists of his era, Amedeo Modigliani is also perhaps one of the least understood. In this thorough , yet refreshingly concise volume, Werner Schmalenbach examines Modigliani's oeuvre, offering a chronological tour of every aspect of Modigliani's career. The informative commentary is complemented by hundreds of splendid reproductions, many of them full-page color plates. The result is an intimate portrait of a life devoted to art, and an essential reference for any art lover.

3 out of 5 stars Do not read for true Modigliani facts, only opinion........1998-04-27

It is unfair of me to give a headline as above, and then write a paragraph of my opinion, but this is the necessary confines of our situation.

Modigliani's art is quite unique from all other art in Paris between 1900-1920. He was barely influenced by the other artists at the time. This is his strength. What the author of this book seems to want to prove is that Modigliani's work is somehow lessenned by its lack of innovativeness. Many of us disagree.

The author is also attempting to challenge well known truths of Modigliani's work. The author challenges Modigliani's worth as a sculptor and dedication to it. It is fairly widely known that Modigliani gave up sculpture because of health reasons, not dedication reasons.

The author also attempts to take Modigliani's art without taking in the effects of his life, so he has misunderstood Modigliani's nudes and sculpture as a whole.

I do not mean to say that the author is a poor writer, or even a poor art critic. He is a very poor judge of Modigliani, that is a fact. That is not just my opinion.

            Book Description

Any parent who's been through the rigors of an infant invasion knows that the real poop, er, scoop, rarely gets recorded in those precious little keepsake books. After all, those books don't cover all the really gross and fascinating stuff that makes parents laugh, scream, and scratch their heads. The Inappropriate Baby Book, however, has the good stuff covered. A real baby book for real parents, The Inappropriate Baby Book offers a unique and hysterical way to commemorate those decidedly non-Kodak moments that compose the better part of the newborn experience. Herein, you'll find room to record such facts as:You were introduced to a rectal thermometer on this day: _______.The first person you peed on was _______.Your mom was embarrassed by breast leakage in the following places: _________.Your first poop happened on this day: _______, and was this color: _________.Now, that's the kind of information that should not be lost to posterity!Sure, babies are cute, but they are also stinky, sticky, soggy, and otherwise inappropriate. So don't sugarcoat the story-let The Inappropriate Baby Book help you tell it like it really is.The book includes an envelope affixed to the last page so that an inappropriate memento can be saved forever. (Or at least until the little angel's prom night!)

Not much to the book and it's not as exciting as I thought it would be. But cute.

5 out of 5 stars Good Laughs and possible Bribery??.......2007-08-10

I am a first time grandmother (at 40) and bought this book for my daughter who is due soon. When my kids were teenagers I told them all the funny and somewhat embarrassing things that they had done as babies. We are a fun loving family that likes to tease and be playful so I wish I had this book for my babies to log all of the gross and embarrassing moments to share with them later.

Although it's hard to forget taking my daughter shopping when she was 5 months old. I was carrying her and began to smell something awful!! I held her out a little to get a good look at her. Not only had she vomited down my back but she had a slight case of diarrhea that ended with throwing her clothes away in the garbage can of the department store bathroom and a crude bath in the sink. Thank goodness I had an extra little tshirt for her in the diaper bag. After placing her into the stroller I quickly purchased a tshirt and went back to the bathroom and changed into my new shirt and threw mine in the garbage!

I recommend this book to remember the less gross and embarrassing moments too. They are always good for a laugh later and possibly when your sweet baby turns into a teen ager you can use it for "bribery" or "black mail".

Just going through the book has triggered memories that I had forgotten until now. It's been lots of fun!

4 out of 5 stars Cute for those who can handle it.......2007-06-16

I wouldn't give this book to any of my humorless-uppity friends. But definitely for anyone with a sense of humor (with a little twist) would enjoy this book. Nice graphics. Nice size. Not too long and not too short. Juuuuusssst right.

4 out of 5 stars Funny and different way to record what you really remember.......2007-06-05

This book is great and lets you share the experiences you really remember as a new parent that don't always end up in the official baby book. There is plenty of room to really get down the details of who changed the first diaper, when he peed on you, who she firt spit up on, and stuff about mom and dad too.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2007-03-08

After reading several of the reviews, I purchased this book thinking it would provide laugh out loud hilarity. However, I was disappointed and the only reason I didn't send it back is because the total shipping would be more than I originally paid for the book. If you want to document obscure and funny events in baby's life, just jot it down at the back of the regular baby book or keep it in a journal. This way you won't be held down to what this author finds amusing, which is sometimes relevant, sometimes not even close. This is the aggravating part because the book is so short it can't afford to miss the mark nearly as often as it does. I am no prude; I was looking for some high brow crazy stuff, but this book totally fizzles in the gross-out, shock-value department.

3 out of 5 stars Scholarly, Well Researched, Dense with Theory.......2002-10-30

Susan Hayward has done a good job putting together a compendium of cinema concepts. Her work is very scholarly and well researched with a good deal of additional references (for further reading.)

Professor Hayward's bio says she is a Professor of French Studies. It shows in her book. If you feel like you haven't had your fill of post modernism, semiotics and structuralist/post structuralist theory, this book will get your diet straight.

This isn't the kind of book you'd just sit down and read from cover to cover. It's more of a reference. My complaint is that the book is a little dry and dense.

However, if you need a reference book on cinema concepts, this is a good choice.

            .
This Catholic hymnal comes from GIA Publishers of Bedford Park, Illinois, a modest light-industrial suburb bordering the far south side of Chicago.

G I A Publishers the company is a most amazing venture, as it has more or less redefined the Roman Catholic hymnary/hymnal genre to fit the post-Vatican II liturgical climate. (They also stock Taize CD's by the boatload.) Previously, most publishers (with a number of exceptions) would put their sung congregational hymns in the context of hymnarys or missals (or even small paperback, staple-bound throwaway mini-missals that were destined to be tossed after a particular liturgical season was over). In other words, the congregation pew racks contained--if they contained anything at all--service music that happened to have some hymns.

G I A came along during the 1980s with its seminal WORSHIP series (now in its third edition, with another coming soon), and its hymnal--while still liturgically useful as to antiphons and service music--is pretty much the ultimate in pew-friendliness for the congregation. WORSHIP has hymns, and those tending toward a "high church" tradition, which are compatible with a large, organ-and-choir type of worship music.

Some contexting is in order for my fellow non-R.C.'s: singing of hymn "tunes" by the congregation pre Vatican II in the 1960s was more the exception than the rule. But in the post-Vatican II climate, following the exemplary success of WORSHIP, the smaller, folksier and/or more liturgically modern congregations demanded a similar book of liturgy, worship and praise. A pew book that would suit, say, worship with a small or no choir: perhaps just a piano or guitar or mixed strings, with perhaps a cantor to lead congregational singing.

The result is 1996's RITUAL SONG, and it's a beauty. It is modern (Marty Haugen has over 100 entries in the book) but it also represents the full panoply of Western Christian music, both R.C. and non. In this book you'll find the 18th Century Methodist tune DUKE STREET ("I Know that My Redeemer Lives"), Taize chants ("Jesus, Remember Me, When You Come Into Your Kingdom"), holiday standards like "The First Nowell" and "Come, You Thankful People Come," the Psalms set to music; yet tradition is not ignored (see "Regina Coeli" for example.)

This is a wonderful hymnal and deserves its ongoing success. In fact, even Protestants would find it quite useful, about its only drawback for the more tuneful denominations being that it is scored for unison, not four-part S-A-T-B as are most Protestant hymnals.

Upon the success of the WORSHIP series, and this RITUAL SONG, the cry went out for a synthesis of both. That was GATHER COMPREHENSIVE, but that's a different review . . . ;)

...this is your book! Or at least maybe the one to start learning this 'art'. Lots of examples of simple and not so simple checkmates in one or two movements that will make it possible for you to find the best way to finish the game in a favorable way for you. If you feel you don't know how to checkmate your opponent, this is your book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Beginner's Book to Practice Checkmates.......2006-07-20

This is like a workbook of checkmates. It is a perfect book for a beginner and has hundreds of simple (very basic) checkmate positions to find the checkmate in. I like this a lot better than "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" because it has a lot more problems. There are not a lot of books that teach basic checkmates in a workbook form so get this book if you are a real beginner before going to the next step where I recommend "1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate" and "Winning Chess Traps for Juniors".
My teacher in school uses this book to set up problems for us to solve!

4 out of 5 stars Improve your chess.......2005-11-04

Yes, it's simple and basic. But for a weak or new player, the drills are invaluable. I've seen mates that I never would have noticed except for what I learned in this book.
It will also help you see how the pieces work together. If you're rated under 1200 this book can help you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the beginner.......2004-05-10

I bought this book a long time ago and kept it around because I felt it would be useful later. It has proven to be. My son is just starting to learn chess and for his individual study I have him working through the book. The progressively harder problems have proven a challenge for him exactly as I intended. Many of the other books out there on checkmating are above his level and he would quickly get discouraged. This one is just right: challenging enough where he doesn't get bored but not so hard he just gives up.

If you're new to chess, a casual player, or just one who likes running through chess problems quickly, this is a good book. The answers are at the bottom of the pages, so there's no flipping between two different sections of the book. A slip of paper or a bookmark and you can keep the answer hidden until you've made your guess. I would prefer all puzzle books to be written this way.

5 out of 5 stars A core skill-builder for our school chess club.......2004-03-12

Our small year-round school (3rd-12th grade) has used this book regularly since the chess club was founded. New club members join every quarter but are generally not strong players, so they seldom reach checkmate opportunities in club play.

We give each student a double-page spread (4 problems) to solve without marking up the book: we cover the answers, then students must point out the checkmate to an adult or a stronger player. This way the book can be used again and again. Solving 4 puzzles or 8 in the course of a club meeting is a nice short exercise for even the most hyper students.

Students start out with the 1-move puzzles and move on to 2-moves as they get stronger. This practical, repeated exposure to basic mates starts showing up in their own games.

I've seen a 10th grader improve his skills by regular practice with the book, but have also used it successfully with my 6-year-old daughter (who plays USCF tournaments). I definitely see a correlation in beginners who use these puzzles often and their growing skill in tournament chess. Of course, as the other reviewers have pointed out, this is only one element of chess training.

It's a good book. It takes the reader systematically through the various classes of checkmate, working from simple (one move) to more complex (two move and beyond). Training yourself to see checkmate opportunities is a great way to develop attacking skills and to focus on strategy.

            3 out of 5 stars response.......2005-06-07

As the author of this book, I'd just like to say that it was never meant to be a comprehensive guide to chess. First and foremost, it is a math guide about problem-solving strategies. (Notice the series name?) While I certainly would have liked to have included "en passant," it simply did not fit the scope of the book. And game notation would have required an entire book of its own. I had 32 pages to work with, and math needed to take center stage. If you are a math teacher, I believe that you would appreciate the book much more than the previous reviewer does.

On a personal note, being a chess player myself, I think the book is a decent starter's guide for young chess players. All the basic men/moves are covered. And readers even get to follow several in-game scenarios to their logical ends. But hey, that's just my opinion.

ps, I had to give the book a rating to leave these comments. So i chose middle of the road.

1 out of 5 stars This Book Gives Little--Not Even the Complete Laws of Play.......2004-08-03

This book is priced higher (I paid $22.50) than many other books aimed at chess beginners, but it contains far less than most. I collect chess books, and have seen a wide range of quality, and nonetheless was surprised that this book does not even contain a full set of the rules of play. ("En passant" pawn captures are not covered, and while castling is mentioned, some of the requirements for castling are left out.) There is nothing on chess notation in this book; nor is there even a single chess game. Some books priced as low as $2 give the reader far, far more. NOT RECOMMENDED.

              Book Description

What Remains is a vivid and haunting memoir about a girl from a working-class town who becomes an award-winning television producer and marries a prince, Anthony Radziwill, one of a long line of Polish royals and nephew of President John F. Kennedy. Carole Radziwill's story is part fairy tale, part tragedy. She tells both with great candor and wit.

Carole grew up in a small suburb with a large, eccentric cast of characters. She spent her childhood summers with her grandparents and an odd assortment of aunts and uncles in their poorly plumbed A-frame on the banks of a muddy creek in upstate New York.

At the age of nineteen, Carole struck out for New York City to find a different life. Her career at ABC News led her to the refugee camps of Cambodia, to a bunker in Tel Aviv, to the scene of the Menendez murders. Her marriage led her into the old world of European nobility and the newer world of American aristocracy.

What Remains begins with loss and returns to loss. A small plane plunges into the ocean, carrying John Kennedy, Anthony's cousin, and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Carole's closest friend. Three weeks later Anthony dies of cancer. The summer of the plane crash, the four friends were meant to be cherishing Anthony's last days. Instead, Carole and Anthony mourned John and Carolyn, even as Carole planned her husband's memorial.

Carole Radziwill has an anthropologist's sensibility and a journalist's eye. She writes about families--their customs, their secrets, and their tangled intimacies-- with remarkable acuity and humanity. She explores the complexities of marriage, the importance of friendship, and the challenges of self-invention with unflinching honesty. This is a compelling story of love, loss, and, ultimately, resilience.

4 out of 5 stars How did she survive all this sadness?.......2007-09-12

This is one of the saddest books I have ever read. I am amazed that she was able to write about this -- the losses she suffered were just staggering.

I would have appreciated a bit more information about who all these people were that they were staying with, or that visited, or that were otherwise involved in their lives. There must have been some of that information at some point in the book, but I apparently was in a hurry to get to the heart of the story and skimmed over it a bit too fast. Reminders every once in a while of who these people were would have been helpful, since the reader is not intimately related with them.

But overall this is really an incredible book on many levels. I know sometimes she took exception to being called brave, but she showed a tremendous amount of courage by even tackling this project (writing this memoir), let alone seeing it through. I don't know if I could have done it. I will be thinking about her for a long time.

              5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!.......2007-09-02

Carole Radziwell's story of her life with her new husband, Anthony, and John and Carolyn is articulate and heartwarming. Loved the back story of her childhood, just a plain old childhood, where small-town girl travels to the big city and lives life! But oh, what a life! Her comparisons to her upbringing, and that of Anthony and John's were described with the accuracy of one who 'sees' the chasm, and appreciates it, on both sides of the aisle. She and Carolyn were 'Caldor' girls...they both worked in Caldor's while Anthony and John were 'where'? Yet, they all came together through the luck of the draw. And come together they did. While it lasted, it was serendipity. Not without it's problems, and in the scale of life, a short time, but serendipity nonetheless.

I, for one, am amazed with this snapshot of her life. AND IT IS HER SNAPSHOT TO SHARE! She lived it, loved it, learned it and buried it.

We are 'very' past the awestruck 'Kennedy halycon days' and well into history, and I am happy to have seen a small part of it. People won't care anymore, soon, if not already. Her story is a beautiful story, funny, smart, and heartfelt. And, of yes, they are famous. Thanks to the author, those who do care can put this chapter to rest.

5 out of 5 stars This book allowed me to feel the writers emotions........2007-08-28

Wow, What a book. I could not put it down. Very well written. I have read several books with John F. Kennedy in them. I was looking for a new book, a new edge, I recognized Carole Radziwll's name with all the reading I have done on the family. What ever novel she is working on I will be watching for, I completely enjoyed the close connection you get from her writtings. Thanks for the interesting, sad but true story of love, loss, friendship and the inner power one must dig for to go on as Michael, John and Carolyn would have wanted her to.

              5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING MEMOIR.......2007-08-28

EXCELLENT. MOVING. EXACTLY HOW A MEMOIR SHOULD BE. AND FINALLY, A TRUE, KINDLY PORTRAIT OF CAROLYN, JOHN'S WIFE. I COULDN'T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN AND ALL I READ ARE TRUE STORIES. THE BEST.

              5 out of 5 stars Unexpected.......2007-08-23

When I bought this book, I didn't realize who had written it and once I got started, I wasn't quite sure I would like it, since I generally don't like this sort of celebrity tell all. However, it didn't take long to realize that wasn't what it was about at all. It doesn't matter that Carole is writing about several very famous people, her story is tremendously sad and she is incredibly brave to write about it. On top of it, she is a very good writer. It is a wonderful tribute to those that she loves and I recommend it highly.

                    Book Description

In Public Enemies, bestselling author Bryan Burrough strips away the thick layer of myths put out by J. Edgar HooverÂ's FBI to tell the full story—for the first time—of the most spectacular crime wave in American history, the two-year battle between the young Hoover and the assortment of criminals who became national icons: John Dillinger, Machine Gun Kelly, Bonnie and Clyde, Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, and the Barkers. In an epic feat of storytelling and drawing on a remarkable amount of newly available material on all the major figures involved, Burrough reveals a web of interconnections within the vast American underworld and demonstrates how HooverÂ's G-men overcame their early fumbles to secure the FBIÂ's rise to power.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with fascinating information.......2007-07-29

Burrough takes you beyond the comic book version of gangsters and G-men in this detailed look at a unique period of American history. All sorts of interesting tidbits flow out of the pages, all of it based upon solid research. Burrough has said he wanted to avoid any 'speculative' history where the author attempts to interpret events or else posit some theory based upon flimsy evidence. I appreciate that as I've had too many experiences of authors interjecting their theories into history books and rendering the book somewhat ludicrous.

That said, in some places the book does get weighted down under an avalanche of information. In those places I had to slow down in order to follow the story line. However, I didn't find that too big of an issue....not even enough to deduct a star off my rating.

Overall, an excellent read which will give you a comprehensive understanding of the gangster era.

                    4 out of 5 stars Public Enemies.......2007-07-15

How anyone can find fault with this book is beyond me. Mr. Burroughs is to be commended for a job well done. As a crime aficionado myself who is, unfortunately, usually disappointed in the vast majority of so-called "true crime" stories on the market today, I found "Public Enemies" to be a breath of fresh air in that it was fast-paced, meticulously researched, and exciting. Definitely a keeper in my library!

3 out of 5 stars Audio Abridgement Is a Tough Sell.......2007-03-27

Whenever you produce an abridged version of any book, there is a risk that you'll edit out things which end up being not just relevant, but even critical to full enjoyment of the work.

That's pretty much the case here.

There is so much encyclopedic material in the full book that the abridgement loses way too many references. The result is, unfortunately, that the devoted reader misses pieces which are really crucial to understanding the huge picture of crime and criminals being painted here.

"Pentimento." I'd recommend skipping the abridged audio version and reading the whole book instead.

                    1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2007-03-20

I'm never turned off by large, well researched non-fiction books (and rarely write Amazon reviews), but Public Enemies, like the author's other work, Barbarians at the Gate, is unreadable to those without a very special interest in the subject matter primarily due to the overwhelming number of "characters." Mr. Burroughs thoughtfully includes a "cast of characters" in both books, but the books contain so many people that it's impossible to read the texts straight through without constantly doubling back to the cast, taking notes or re-reading sections...reminding me of my college textbook days. What is strange is that although I am a big fan of non-fiction true crime/law enforcement AND business/finance books, I could not get past the 150 page point on either book because the tomes contain so many people/places/events and each person/place/event is given so little time...it felt like reading an encyclopedia and not a book. Mr. Burroughs admits that the bulk of Public Enemies is taken straight from the FBI's own case files...six file cabinets worth. However, the book reads as if Mr. Burroughs went through each file and extracted all the interesting tidbits, then arranged them chronologically with a law enforcement timeline software package like Case Map and BAM...there's the book...a chronological summary of FBI case files with a *wink wink* "look how so-and-so was connected to so-and-so and how so-and-so knew the same people as so-and-so" thrown in. I really wanted to like this book and Barbarians at the Gate, but I plan on giving both books away and never reading another Bryan Burrough book. For a fantastic book on bank robberies, check out Ballad of the Whisky Robber. And The Informant is a great example of how an author can make dry FBI case facts jump of the page...another 5 star read.

a fascinating book about a fascinating time in america. dillinger, baby face nelson, pretty boy floyd, the barker family, machine gun kelly, bonnie and clyde, j edgar hooever, and melvin purvis; all are brought vividly to life on the pages of this terrific book. it's long, but sustained my interest every page of the way. i know of no better book that covers the history of crime in america in the early 1930's than this one. go ahead and read it. you have my approval.
