Fun Fun Fun.......2007-05-01
Out of the 13 short stories, I enjoyed 10 thoroughly. A great way to discover some authors I was unfamiliar with. A great investment.
Funny and Tender.......2007-04-05
I bought this book because I'm an avid fan of Jennifer Weiner. As a result I have been introduced to the fun and whimsical writing of the other authors who contributed their short stories.
Each short story is engaging and very entertaining.
Fun to read!!.......2006-11-10
The book was great- I dont usually like short stories but it was perfect for when I was working out or just needed a quick break from reality!
Fun read most of the time.......2006-11-06
Most of the short stories were quite good and left me wanting to delve into the characters more; others not so much. Overall a good, light read.
Women Authors.......2006-08-20
This was a great way to "sample" lots of new authors. The stories were well written, and I intend to read books by several of the authors, I enjoyed them so much.

Heaven Lies About is a remarkable collection, beautifully wirtten, powerfully imagined. Maclin Bocock's haunting, intelligent stories about growing up in the South amid compassion, anger, and loss are simply unforgettable.
Book Description
A eunuch archpriest and an unscrupulous senator smuggle two products from China to Italy that will change the course of western history.
Surgeon Getorius Asterius, his wife Arcadia, a eunuch archpriest of a pagan fertility cult, the female head of an heretical church, and an ambitious senator in league with a Chinese merchant: these are the prime movers in this mystery set at Ravenna, Italy, in A.D. 440. When Getorius is summoned to examine the castrated body of a youth found by Thecla in her Arian church, who is the sobbing "Vestal Virgin" nearby? Why is the senator smuggling counterfeit Western coins to the Eastern Empire, and unknown Chinese products back to Ravenna? The murdured Thecla's coded message leads to a secret tunnel and the sinister temple of Cybele, whose devotees are self-mutilated eunuchs. In a stunning climax, the conspirators try to escape Ravenna, planning to sell one product in Egypt, but failing to recognize the far more deadly nature of the other.

Great read.......2006-06-22
This is a well written book which holds the reader's interest. Mr. Noyer develops two interesting characters, the physician Getorius and his wife, Arcadia. In addition, he captures the turbulence of this period of Western history.
Mediocre at best........2006-03-03
I felt like I was reading a mediocre television script. Five stars are the best books ever. This is barely a two. I think books like this are written by writers who are urged to produce another novel for publishers. And it shows. People spend hard earned money on these books. Go to the library and check it out.
Engrossing and superbly written fiction.......2005-08-09
The writer knows how to capture the readers attention. This suspense-driven, historical novel revolves around a 5th Century surgeon and his wife who are living in Ravenna, Italy, shortly before the demise of the Roman Empire. The emperor's mother, a greedy Roman senator, an Arian woman priestess, a Vestal Virgin, and an Asian merchant are some of the vivid characters, who scheme and plot their way to a stunning and suprising climax.
Most interesting was the way the writer took me on an incredible journey back in time. I learned about the food and drink people consumed, the culture and customs, and how physicians treated and cured their patients ailments. Christianity in its early stages and the various religious cults of people trying to hang on to their own beliefs makes it interesting.
Throughout the novel, the tightly woven plots of murder and intrigue make this a spellbinding tale and an enjoyable read.

* * * * * Exceptional Cannabis: No Kidding! * * * * *.......2004-07-23
This book will lead you to the bushel of buds at the end of the rainbow! It takes you through all of the necessary (and not always obvious) measures you need to take to grow some utterly mind blowing pot. DJ Short takes you on a magical cloud walk through the realms of safety and sprouting. From there you fly through the land of the dirt covered hands where you learn about all the aspects of raising a pot baby of your very own. Then, as you stroll across that wonderful rainbow, DJ discusses the many aspects of curing, and enjoying the bushel of pot that you are about to harvest. If you so desire you can stay and soak up DJ?s knowledge about breeding or cloning your little ladies, and even learn something about choosing the color of your flowers.
I Give this book five stars from my cannabis sky because I?m on my way to the bushel at the end of the rainbow! Thank you DJ, I'll see you there!
Check out DJ Short.......2004-02-14
First off, DJ Short is an unbelievable breeder. This guy is an artist, really, and I've been reading his stuff for years. So I guess you could complain that a lot of what's in here has been published elsewhere but even as a fan of the guy, I'm not going to spend all my time flipping through hundreds of magazines trying to find all his articles. So if you want to hear what Short has to say about anything and everything- and believe me, you should- this book is where to find it. Also, the pictures are phenomenal and only DJ Short would have a flavor and olfaction chart centerfold. You've got to love this guy.
Great book about breeding.......2004-02-14
This book has good information from a solid breeder and it looks good too. A crazy purple budding plant wraps around the entire cover and it looks tasty. Inside there's useful charts and illustrations. PLUS, the color photo section has some nice photos.
Sure, this information has been in Cannabis Culture Magazine, but I don't have time to read through back issues and find all the articles (if I even saved them all). I like having all this information in one place.
I like this book. If you want to know how to go about breeding and stabilizing marijuana, you will like this book. DJ Short knows what he's talking about. His writing style is casual and straight forward. The book answered all of my questions about breeding and had some interesting asides and thoughts from DJ Short. Good stuff.
Rip-off.......2004-02-14
Before you condsider wasting your money on Dj Short's book consider this: This book has nothing new it is just a compilation of Dj's articles that he wrote for cannabis culture, thrown together in an effort to make money. All of these articles can be found online at CC. The book looks as if it were thrown together in an hour, there are pages with only a sentence or two. There a few pictures that were also already in CC. Dj Short is respected in his trade as one of the best but he is not an author. If you want detailed information, this book is not the right one. I suggest reading one of Mel Frank's or one Ed Rosenthal's books.

The Cupcake Café Cookbook is a gem for everyone who loves doughnuts, originally decorated cakes, or off-beat New York City eateries. The actual café is a funky daytime oasis in the still-iffy neighborhood once known as Hell's Kitchen. Ann Warren and her husband, Michael, started the café as a bakery in 1988. They now serve food, too, but their fame comes from the breakfast baked goods and Warren's strikingly creative butter cream-frosted cakes and cupcakes.
You have to smile at Warren suggesting her doughnuts are health food because they're made from scratch with natural ingredients and eaten without butter or cream cheese. You will certainly enjoy every recipe for them and all of the muffins, scones and sticky buns, too. Warren's use of butter cream for decorating cakes with cascades of colorful flowers and other original designs is so magical that even Madonna and Mick Jagger have ordered from her. If you have an ounce of manual dexterity, Warren's detailed guidance on cake decorating will send you into orbit. Photos showing how to make the flower-encrusted cakes for which Cupcake Café is famous also a help. --Dana Jacobi
Book Description
A uniquely idiosyncratic New York establishment, The Cupcake Café is a cozy mecca for lovers of all kinds of delicious homemade baked goods, including muffins, scones, coffee cakes, waffles, pies, sticky buns, and doughnuts. But it is best known for its fanciful cakes and cupcakes, elaborately decorated with homemade butter cream frosting. From many-tiered wedding cakes to tiny cupcakes covered in fresh fields of flowers, to sheet cakes embellished in vivid colors with virtually any scene you can describe or imagine, The Cupcake Café's baked goods are renowned for tasting even better than they look.
In The Cupcake Café Cookbook, Ann Warren shares all her secrets, teaching the home cook not only how to bake all of the Café's ambrosial products, but also how to decorate with butter cream in her own wildly fanciful style. Photographs in color and black-and-white, as well as detailed instructions for mixing colors, shaping flowers, and creating balance, bring even the most elaborate decorating techniques well within the ability of any home baker.
Writing not only with incomparable expertise, but also with the irreverence and wit that characterize everything she does, Ann Warren has re-created the entire unique Cupcake Café experience in book form.

Big Disappointment...........2006-06-07
If you had seen the author back on the old Martha Stewart Living show, you were no doubt impressed by how she easily and quickly decorated her cakes with all sorts of different flowers.
This book disappoints, especially when you consider that almost 2/3 of the book is about baked goods other than the flower cakes she's known for. There are a few color pictures of the beautifully flower-decorated cakes (some out of focus), and a few of some non-flower decorated cakes that look awful compared to the flower cakes (looks like someone who didn't know what they were doing did them).
She has her recipe for buttercream using whole eggs in here, and tips for handling it/fixing it, along with several color formulas for flowers, and some descriptions for making the flowers. But, NO step-by-step instructional pictures, which renders the descriptions just about useless, unless you had seen her on Martha. You'd do better to go to your local craft store and pick up some Wilton books, or take some of their classes.
Borrow this book from the library if you are only interested in the cake decorating portion, or, if you just need the recipe, it was halved in the Feb '96 issue of Martha Stewart Living Magazine (I already had this, I was hoping for much better from the book).
Another reviewer mentioned a cake decorating video from Martha that featured the author, and that would be the best way to learn the technique--I wish Amazon would sell it, as I can't find it on the Martha site. If it were sold together with a rewritten version of this book, it would be a winner.
I love this book!.......2006-06-06
I found the information on color combinations and flower techniques very informative. I immediately tried them out on a cake I made and I was totally impressed with the results. I made wisteria flowers following the directions in the book and they were beautiful. My cake looked like a work of art!
Borrow this book from the library first, before buying!.......2006-03-18
As a bakery owner, and someone who goes to NYC just to go hop from bakery to bakery, I was thrilled to find this book. My enthusiasm dwindled upon reading, though, I would borrow it from the library before buying because the recipes are not worth the cash! The buttercream is good, but not great, and the cakes are just simple 1-2-3-4 Southern Style cake recipes, overall, I think it is a bit outdated.
Tastless!.......2006-03-13
Cupcake Cafe's cakes are beautiful, whimsical, fun or elegant. True artistry. Unfortunately, they all taste like cardboard. Don't bother with their shop in New York City and don't bother with this book with few photos and few ideas. A waste.
Extremely disappointing.......2005-07-28
Luckily I checked this out at the library instead of buying it. After doing much research on the internet, I found Ann Warren's cakes to be the most beautiful by far. I was happy to find she had a book out and checked it out yesterday. Today I attempted to make the butter cream recipe and was really quite shocked at the results. I am positive something is wrong with the recipe: perhaps a typo? She calls for 2 1/2 pounds of butter. That cannot be right. I read it about five times before making it. Sure enough, after hours of preparation (by the book, no shortcuts or improvising), I ended up with a HUGE amount of sweetened butter. It was absolutely disgusting. And yellow. I cannot imagine this is what she is serving to her customers. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! I am only giving it two stars because it does have some guidance as far as color mixing and flower techniques, but even that could have been better. You get better photographs for free by going on their website. Save your money!

Flea Market Trader (12th Edition).......2001-07-30
I found the information in this flea market guide to be very helpful in calculating the value of many every day items that you find at flea markets and garage sales. The broad content covering many items made it easy to look up items that I couldn't find in other similar price guide books.
I was very satisfied with the book and prefer it over some other well known antique and flea market price guide books that I have purchased before. It makes an excellent source to refer to when attempting to figure out the worth of an item that can't be found in some of the other guides.
The guide offer a variety of catagories and is certainly a book I would recommend for anyone researching flea market and related items. There is a wealth of good information in the book.

this is a great book. The author goes into great detail about making dozens of paper and fabric beads. I would recommend this book to any crafter who enjoys jewelry, beads, paper crafts, recycling, and new and unusual crafts. Good instructions are easy enough for a pre teen or teen to follow-good party, scout craft idea. Buy it!
This is a great book!.......2004-07-13
Paper beads are like potato chips, you can't stop at just one! They are easy to make, even the fancier ones are easy after just a little practice. This is such a great, inexpensive, and very creative craft. I even sold some of my creations on eBay!
I love it!.......2000-08-08
The book is a very amazing craft idea. I could start making beads almost immediatly w/ great sucess. Almost everyone in my family has requested a necklace since i began making them, and i plan to continue. I hope more people catch on to this idea!
Fun and easy hobby!.......2000-01-23
I loved this book because of the detailed instructions and beautiful color photos. I made one bead following the instructions and I haven't been able to stop since! The projects are perfect for kids because of the simplicity, and a great rainy-day craft because you already have the materials at hand. I've made some really cool jewelry that I can guarantee no one else has.

History of Residential Architecture in New York City.......2005-01-19
This book relates the history of residential architecture in New York City from 1869-1930, the period covering the transition from single family houses to apartment dwellings. The book is into four sections organized by era: Old New York (1869-1879), the Gilded Age (1880-1899), the New Metropolis (1900-1919), and the Manhattan Skyline (1920-1930). According to Hawes, an architect named Richard Morris Hunt was the leader in bringing apartment buildings to New York. Hunt had been educated in Paris, where apartment buildings were the norm. Indeed, when he began designing apartment buildings for New York, they were first called "French flats." Hawes takes us on a tour through neighborhoods where the new apartment buildings were being constructed, and she also describes how the millionaires living on Fifth Avenue were determined to keep apartments out of their neighborhood. She introduces the architects of the time, and provides detailed descriptions of both buildings and the interior layouts of the new luxury apartments. This book is very much about New York City--there is little, if any, discussion of architectural changes in other American cites. The book is amply illustrated with high-quality black-and-white period photographs. End material includes an appendix of extant buildings of the style described in the text, endnotes, selected references, and an index.
Throughout the book, the focus is on housing for the rich and the upper-middle class, those who kept a social distance between themselves and the lower classes who lived in tenements. The book chronicles not only the architects of the time and the buildings they designed, but also how high society gradually accepted and even warmed up to the idea of living in multiple-family dwellings. In order to make the new apartment buildings attractive to upper-class tenants, architects included every luxury they could think of, from ample servants' quarters, to independent electrical power stations and cold storage rooms.
Though the book is well-researched, I'm still not entirely convinced by several of Hawes; claims, however. The book is sub-titled "How the apartment house transformed the life of the city." While the apartment house was certainly a new way of living for the rich, I suspect that the majority of the population did not belong to the upper classes, and did not have access to these buildings. What's more, the shift in architectural style that Hawes describes doesn't seem to be of the type that would filter down to the masses, so it's hard to see how these new luxury apartment houses transformed the life of the city beyond the rich. If the life of the city actually was transformed, it's hard to discover the details in this book, since the book focuses more on the architects and their buildings than on cultural change. Hawes also seems to be at least implicitly claiming that it was the new architecture style that convinced people to live in multiple-family dwellings. She notes that the population of New York exploded during this time period. If so, then land values must have been increasing as well, and there must have been quite a bit of pressure to use the land more efficiently. Hawes notes that as land values went up, some of the very rich finally sold their land, and had the exact layout of their houses duplicated on the uppermost floor of the new buildings that went onto the plots. This suggests that perhaps the shift from single family houses to apartment dwellings may have been inevitable rather than simply following fashion, especially given the limited amount of land that was available in the island setting of the city.
Architectural history of the New York apartment house.......2001-11-01
Elizabeth Hawes traces the development of the New York apartment house, beginning with the Stuyvesant (1869), and then discussing the earliest middle-class and upper-class buildings of the 1870s. As Hawes explains how design evolved through the decades, she examines such classic buildings as the Villard Houses (1885), the Dakota (1884), and the Osborne (1885), as well as others of lesser fame. My favorite chapter is the 13th (of 14 chapters), in which Hawes compares three famous architects of the 1920s: Roth, Carpenter, and Candella. As the title indicates, the book's coverage ends at 1930. The author has done more than merely catalogue buildings; instead, she shows how changes in design reflect changes in society and an effort to learn from past design errors. There are 5 floor plans and approximately 50 photographs. As much as I enjoyed this book, I prefer Cromley's 'Alone Together,' which struck me as a slightly better treatment of the same material, with more illustrations. However, Hawes' 'New York, New York' covers the 1920s, a pivotal decade in New York apartment architecture, which was not covered in Cromley's book.

Book Description
The works of Edgard Varèse (1883-1965) represent the most radical expression of 20th-century modernism in music. A friend of Debussy, Strauss, and Busoni, he lived to become the conscience of modern American music and a colleague of Cage, Boulez, and Xenakis. This intensive study of Varèse's music comprises a series of descriptive analyses of all Varèse's available works, addressing the ideas, both aesthetic and scientific, which underlie the composer's boldly original view of sound and musical structure. Also discussed is Varèse's conception of music as influenced by both 20th-century humanities' expanding consciousness of its place in the universe and the esoteric philosophies of late 19th-century Paris. As much of Varèse's oeuvre has been tragically destroyed, MacDonald demonstrates the possibility of inferring much of his lost early works, such as the unachieved choral symphony Espace, designed to be performed simultaneously in various capitals around the world, enlarging listeners' appreciation of his works that survive. Also explored for the first time in print are the previously unpublished scores Tuning Up and Dance for Burgess and the reinstated original version of Amériques, released for performance in 1998 by Varèse's executor Chou Wen Chung.
