The design of everyday goods, images and environments often goes unnoticed by the consumer, yet the impact of new materials and production processes, together with the changing nature of society and the consumption choices we make, presents designers with considerable challenges. Now in a completely new and updated edition, this book provides a history of the development of modern (and postmodern) design within its international cultural, social and economic context.

Divided into four parts, the book begins with the formative years 1900-1914. Two sections on design and modernity explore the periods 1915-1939 and 1939-1969, and a completely new section, design and postmodernity covers 1970 to the present. New themes explored include postmodernism and design, the alliance between technology and design, and the relationship between identity and design. A key theme is the development of a discourse of design that can be traced through different social periods, movements and cycles.

The author draws on a wealth of mass-produced artifacts, images and environments to illustrate the discussion including sewing machines, cars, chairs, televisions, fashion items, interiors, graphic communications, electronic and branded goods and exhibitions. She includes a full guide to further reading which will be of particular value to students.

Most of the information is half assed, and its dripping with sarcasm on most of the important aspects of the book. however, its an enlightening read and the "government high" and "fashion do's and dont's" are perhaps the reason this book is always open near my toilet

Now, don't get me wrong, I love all of the clever wit and aggressive writing styles. Who cares if VICE doesn't bother editing for even near-proper grammar?

What bothers me are the essays from the supposed "drug experts." Sure, some nuggets of truth worm their way into the write ups, but most of the drug information provided is pure urban legend trash. Strychnine has no part in the synthesis of lysergic acid (LSD). Random testing has shown that only about .05% of acid tablets contain any strychnine, almost none of which contained enough to actually cause a physical response. Those jaw aches are a natural reaction the body has to certain drugs like amphetamines, tranquilizers, mescaline and acid. And LSD was not invented during the Vietnam War!

Alcohol should NEVER be combined with sedatives (or really any other drug for that matter). Also, condoning the use of anti-depressants in high quantity for recreational effect has got to be the most reckless drug advice I've ever read. For the sake of scientific truth and personal safety, DO NOT TAKE VICE'S DRUG ARTICLES SERIOUSLY!

This is easily one of the best toilet books ever. A perfect tome to have near the throne, this book has random article after random article about the title topics.

Vice is a vicious, free magazine that discourages subscriptions. The articles here vary from drug write-ups to profiles on black metal ghouls.

Vice is smart and sickly cynical. This is not Maxim or FHM.

Highly recommended. You can impress guests with this next to the Charmin.

An excellent resource and a joy to read, this is the place to start your exploration of some of the most amazing Japanese films you're likely to see in this lifetime. A Genius book which they should make another..........2007-03-17

Tokyoscope:The Japanese Cult film Companion is a great book if you want to know about the 5 [now 4] banned films and disaster films. I was shocked about the Pink and Violent section [Recommned for 18 and up]. I just wish they include the Toho disaster flick Conflagration which was an inspiration to a story I wrote at school. In Conclusion this book was great.

educational even for a Japanese cinemaphile.......2003-08-21

I wouldn't call myself an expert on Japanese movies, but I do get to every movie festival I can that has Asian features (a great one--the Philapdelphia film festival and their Action Asia selections). I regularly scan the gray market and grab at whatever tickles my fancy even remotely. But this book still provided me with an education. I quibble sometimes with the author's taste, but his breadth of knowledge is undebatable. I now keep this book on my computer desk as I scan for more titles to fuel my little obsession.

Feeling like a collection of incredible Japan-centered zines, TokyoScope hosts reviews, interviews, and assorted oddities together for one whiz-bang collection of Japanese film. Omitting overexposed works of anime and chambara, Macias instead focuses on under-appreciated genres like yakuza-eiga and roman porno and stars such as Sonny Chiba and Bunta Sugawara. Additionally, TokyoScope contains interviews with directors Kinji Fukasaku and Takashi Miike.

Boasting scads of reviews for dozens of films I've never had the pleasure of seeing, TokyoScope is a terrific step in the right direction for folks who want to associate themselves with the multifaceted cinema from the Land of the Rising Sun. (ISBN: 1569316813)

This is a very pretty looking book that introduces young readers to the world of Ludwig Van Beethoven. The idea of this series is to look at the influences and historical events that shaped the lives of great composers. Roland Vernon describes how Beethoven was born into a changing world of revolutions that transformed America and France, and shows how Beethoven's music mirrored those turbulent times. But Vernon also explores how Beethoven's music reflected a deeply personal exploration of human nature and emphasizes how the composer profoundly changed every form of music in which he work. The book has sidebars devoted to Beethoven's musical contemporaries like Mozart, revolutionary thinkers like Thomas Paine, instruments like the harpsichord, and events like the fall of Napoleon. As I said above, the book is illustrated quite impressively, with historic paintings and artifacts. Vernon focuses most on the details of Beethoven's life and the history of the time, somewhat at the expense of his music, which matters here because the thesis is that Beethoven is a musical revolutionary. That is difficult to do in a book, granted, but if that is the contract with the reader then it needs to be followed up on more explicitly. Other titles in the series introduce young readers to Bach, Chopin, Gershwin, Mozart, Starvinsky, Verdi, and Vivaldi.

My husband has been in the carpentry trade for over forty-five years and spiral stairs has been one of his specialities. He reviewed the book and has found several items of real interest after all these years to assist him in the building of stairs.

Not an "eleventh hour" how-to.......2006-06-26

honestly, if you are halfway through a curved handrail at sort of a sticky point and think "I'll order this book, it looks like it might help", well, you are probably wrong.

Lots of info, like a lot of the other stair books, but not put together in a way that will be useful in the short term. I'd say it's more like a text book. Also the term "Simplified" in the title...I guess if you are Stephen Hawking, then perhaps. But why would Stephen Hawkings want a book about building stairs?

A lot to get your head around, not going to help you out of a bind, unless your bind is something like "how do I find the vertex locations of a rake-to-level section"

I bought this book looking for something to help me design a simple staircase. After browsing this archaic reference text for about 5 minutes I determined it would of no practical value to 99.99% of anyone not already an expert. I threw it in the trash.

The really useful book out there.......2003-09-13

This is the only book available that one can actually use to learn tangent handrailing, and classical stair design. This is an advanced text for the architectural woodworker with some grounding in stairbuilding. If this describes your situation, buy the book, glue up some practice blanks out of construction lumber, and begin your exploration of a fascinating craft. Mowatt is a great conversation piece on the bookshelf, but the only reason I know what he's talking about is owed to the time I spent with DiChristina's book. My copy is somewhat beaten-up due to the time it has spent on the workbench. I am grateful to the author for the clearest and best organized book on this subject.

A Little Misleading.......2002-11-21

The title and even the example pages that are viewable are very misleading to the actual content of the book. I did not pay close enough attention to the chaper/page breakdown. Only a third of the book has anything to do with the construction of the stairs, and the rest is covering handrail design construction. The information in the first two sections did not provide me with any usable info on how to build a staircase. If you are building a very complex railing system, this may be a good purchase, otherwise, save your money.

Purchased book not expecting it to be as honest, forthright, insightful and educational. Mr. Lawford's honesty is refreshing. He writes of his personal journey through his addiction to alcohol and drugs. He portrays it realistically and does not 'whitewash' the facts about his own struggle and those of his notorious family.

Anyone that has a loved one struggling with addiction should read this book to get into the mind of an addict. It may assist in understanding the pull that the addict feels in choosing drugs or alcohol over all else in their lives.

Bravo Mr. Lawford, bless you and may you live the rest of your days clean, sober and full of happiness in still being alive. Your honesty is refreshing, especially considering who your family is.

A Fast Read.......2007-07-09

I always wondered what the country would have been like if RFK had not been killed and he had become president. After reading this book, I wonder what the Kennedy clan would have looked like if he had lived. Would these cousins have sunk to the depths as they did? It seems the boys were so much more impacted than the girls.

Christopher Lawson does a great job in this book helping you to see how the national events were personal ones for himself and his family. It is a fast read with lots of tales from behind the Kennedy compound. But I really wanted to like the guy in the end and I can't say that I do. His spiritual growth has not come full circle to encompass his own family. The only reason I can see for his divorce is so he can continue his hunt for the most beautiful girl in the world. Maybe there are other reasons, but he does not provide them in the book.

Oh well, it was good summer reading.

A Tale of Camelost.......2007-07-02

Lawford, a Kennedy who never got much notice outside the family, wrote a brutally honest memoir here of his drug and booze addictions. The writing is absolutely first rate, and a rarity in its candor about the Kennedys from the insider view. The style is funny, and you'll be chuckling as well as sympathizing, even though Lawford managed to blow more chances that most of us will ever get. He's still narcissistic 20 years into his recovery, and that's unsurprising since, as he notes more than once, sober addicts are still the same people, just sober. The memoir is best on the early years growing up as the son of JFK's sister, Pat, and the actor Peter Lawford. One wonders how this all went over with the Kennedys when published? Though it's gentle, they can't have been too pleased. And that means good reading.

A Different Opinion.......2007-05-13

"Symptoms of Withdrawal" by Christopher Kennedy Lawford" reveals a different look at the 3rd generation of the Kennedy Clan.The frankness and openness with which Christopher wrote his biography impressed me a good deal.Unlike some other reviewers,I found it hard to put down this
saga.Growing up in a world of both priviledge and "pain",feeling second best(because he did not bear Kennedy as his last name)there was a good
deal he had to learn in life.Turning to alcohol and drugs in his teen years was not unusual for an insecure young man,with an absent Father
and a well-meaning but grief stricken Mother.Being raised in boarding
schools and by paid servants,although he had a family,there was a great
deal of loneliness and lack of direction,especially after the cruel
assination of RFK.
Throughout the book, he eventually came upon amazing insights into
his character.When his Aunt Joan takes him to a meeting to learn the
12 steps,he begins to realize others have their tragedies.When he over
came his alcohol and drug addiction,I felt he really had something to offer.
However,the last chapter revealed how truly immature he remains.
I do think he mis-interpreted his therapist.When his Dr. talked about
choices,he was remarking how we choose ways of life.Christopher realizes
he "chose" to get off drugs.He then chooses not to stay married after
17 years and 3 children. He feels he cannot live with absolutes.Well,
we all live with absolutes every day.We pay taxes and we die.These
are absolutes.Up until then,Christopher did not make excuses for his
behavior.So I was taken aback at his peculiar justifications.Despite
the last pages... I did feel this was a worthwhile book and
enjoyed most of it very much,I found the end a little baffling.

Wonderfully Honest.......2007-04-15

Anyone who has experienced addiction in their family will be enthralled by the honesty in this memoir. It takes real courage to own up to all the harm one does to others when addicted, and also, to accept blame for your own condition. I found this book sad, funny, depressing, uplifting, all at once. I recommend it highly.

Professor Weinberg's books are generally held in the highest regard among academic historians, and his history of German diplomacy from 1933 through 1939 remains unsurpassed in scope and scholarship. It's full of crap and is not historical research as we mere mortals understand it. It's packed full of lies, distortions, falsifications and worse.

Just to quote an example, Weinberg claims that the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Serbian terrorist in 1914 was stage managed by the Germans! That all plebiscites held in Germany and Austra since Hitler came to power were rigged! Now that are only some of the most outrageous and ridiculos claims by this German hating moron.

This book presents a wide range of information, both historical and current. It's an excellent reference book for those looking to understand the recent history of the country and how the country got to where it is today. It is essentially a collection of articles form a good range of authors, most of whom present information from a detached viewpoint with adequate information to back up any opinions presented.

A judiscious look at an increasingly important country.......2004-01-02

The pact of Punto Fijo after the overthrow of dictator General Marcos Perez Jimenez in 1958 effectively placed power of state institutions in the hands of the social democratic AD and the Christian Democratic COPEI. Kenneth Roberts notes in chapter three that the supposedly radical policies of the AD government between 1945-48 had played a role in the seizure of power in 1948 of General Jiminez supported by the Venezuelan elite. The AD at Punto Fijo promised to engage in no serious egalitarian policies. An oil boom in the 1970's raised the standard of living of the country a great deal though serious poverty still remained. Declining oil prices and increasing debt in the country compelled the government to engage in a series of austerity measures at the beginning of the eighties beginning with the devaluation of its currency.

But trouble really began with the 1988 election of Carlos Andres Perez of the AD who had been president previously from 1974 to 1979 at the height of the country's oil boom. He explicitly promised not to enact massive cuts in social spending and privatization in government owned industries. Shortly after assuming power in February 1989, he announced that he had reached an agreement with international lending institutions to do exactly that. The ensuing weeklong protests, riots and clashes with police may have killed thousands. Daniel Hellinger in Chapter three quotes a statistic that the percentage of the population living below the poverty line went from 36 percent in 1984 to 66 percent in 1995. In 1981, the bottom forty percent of the population had 19.1 percent of the wealth where as in 1997 it had only 14.7 percent of the wealth. The top ten percent of the country saw its wealth increase from 1981-97 from 21.8 to 32.8 percent. Tariffs were eliminated that protected key domestic industries from foreign competition. Presumably this played a role in the ruining of the agriculture sector. 600,000 people left the countryside for the cities between 1989 and 1992. The percentage of the workforce employed in the precarious informal sector of the economy jumped from 34.5 percent in 1980 to 53 percent in 1999. Rafael Caldera won the 1994 elections after Perez was impeached, running on an anti-neoliberal platform but he decided to continue Perez's privatization policies in 1996.

Chavez set out to democratize the country's main trade federation the CTV, long controlled by the AD. Direct elections were ordered for its leadership, which had previously been handpicked. However, writes Steve Ellner in chapter nine, these elections in late 2001 were marked by disruption and accusations of fraud. Carlos Ortega, the AD's candidate, was declared to be elected as CTV leader in spite of only four of the members of the new electoral commission for union elections certifying his victory.

Chavez's health, education and credit programs for the general population seemed to improve their plight by 2000, much of it carried out by the military. This was particularly the case in the region of Vargas, wracked by severe floods and mudslides in late 1999, The army was accused of engaging in extra-judicial executions in attempts to restore order there. These accusations were repeated in early 2000, notes Deborah Norden in Chapter 5, by the foreign minister and the interior minister (both civilians), which resulted in a split in much of the military officers in Chavez's movement as Chavez refused to condemn the accusations.

Chavez's key principle of "participatory democracy" has been given small attention in practice. Chavez's congress has avoided handing over to committees of citizens to choose candidates for the supreme court, the attorney general and other positions. Maria Pilar Garcia Guadilla in chapter ten notes that Chavez denounced opponents in the Grand Sabana region who objected to a plan he had to deliver energy across their region to Brazil. They objected on ground of its violation of indigenous people's rights and environmental principles and their feelings should have led to the calling of public assemblies on the issue but Chavez condemned them as "traitors, spies and foreigners."

Julia Buxton describes Chavez's land reform law which limited the amount of hectares in land one could hold (ranging from 100 to 5000 hectares) and set a tax on landowners who let more than 20 percent of their land sit idle. Presumably land exceeding the former provision would be redistributed (under government trusteeship) to the landless. This really made the elite crazy and dire predicitons of impending communist dictatorship intensified. All Chavez was actually doing was taking mild steps towards rectifying the severely unequal distribution of land in Venezuela (3 percent of the people own 70 percent of the land).

The writers note that it has been pre-dominantly the upper and middle class minority of the country which has engaged in the protests against Chavez. As Steve Ellner notes in Chapter nine it was difficult to tell exactly what the workers thought of engaging in strikes to protest Chavez since companies in FEDECAMERAS, the country's main business federation, all induced work stoppages by giving their workers days off with pay. Nonetheless, the CTV, notes Ellner, had great trouble bring out workers in the streets to support the U.S. backed coup attempt of April 2002. Many unions condemned the CTV for seeking an alliance with the country's main business federation FEDECAMARAS. The U.S. backed coup placed FEDECAMARAS head Pedro Carmona in power for two days but he was removed by a mass uprising of Caracas's poor. The coup leaders, Buxton notes in chapter six, were "overwhelmingly white, elite...[they] represented a return to the exclusion and inequality of the fourth republic."

Patricia Marquez in Chapter 11 discusses Chavez's persona of being a dashing caudillo devoting his life to the poor. Chavez receives thousands of requests every day from ordinary people. Marques gives the example of Chavez paying for the repairs of the motorcycle of a slum-dweller who called up his radio show.

Chavez will no doubt become an official U.S. bugaboo if covert action dosen't work against him and the Venezuelan elite is not able to overthrow him.
