Book Description
INCLUDES NEW MATERIAL FOR PAPERBACK EDITION
With all her notorious, righteous comic rage, Margaret Cho lays out in no uncertain terms what's wrong, what's right, and what's definitely worth fighting for.
That includes: freedom of expression, gay rights, racial equality, the right to choose, and the right to life-a real life, on your own freethinking, liberty-loving all-American terms.
Cho's is a vehement, principled, and resoundingly funny political agenda, and with this manifesto she encourages us all to go through our warrior rituals now-it's time to get visible, get loud, and "get your war on."
Customer Reviews:
Not funny, not intelligent, not good.......2007-05-21
Margaret Cho is a great comedian. I love comedy. Marguerite Cho is a liberal activist. I am a liberal. But in this book, Margaret Cho is not funny, and her political views are not insightful, interesting, or anything other than elementary and sad. It boggles the mind to think that someone could be so intelligent a comic and yet so dense when it comes to politics, economics, the law, and philosophy. And again, I am a liberal. I empathize with Cho's point of view on most issues. It's just that she doesn't back up her perspectives with anything approaching intelligent thought, and her observations are delivered in a crass, negative, and most importantly, unfunny manner. I have no problem with comedians who want to speak out on important issues, nor do I have a problem with politically inspired comedy, but this is not Ms. Cho's bag. She should stick to what she does best, and if she writes another smarmy, fifth-grade-level political book, her fans would be best advised to avoid it.
I pity 'da fool.......2007-04-05
I got this audio book at the library without really knowing who Margaret Cho was. Imagine my surprise when, after listening to the book, I found out she considers herself a comedian.
She's wrong about many of her viewpoints and her reverse racism and prejudice make her look more hypocritical than anyone she attempts to lampoon, but above all that, her writing just isn't funny. I thought comedians were funny. Sorry. My mistake. Maybe someone should tell her that repeatedly using the F-word doesn't guarantee laughs. It just makes the user look ignorant.
If she wants to waste her time complaining about how white men rule the world, then that's fine, let her vent that rage. I'd be angry too if I was a fat little Asian woman with a limited insight into the world. It's people like Cho who keep the perpetual cycle of racism going. They insist on making things racial. White people would rather just forget about it and move on.
A few words of advice, Margaret. First, stop acting like a gangsta'. You're Asian, not black. Second, get a little education. You denigrate Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly, but I'm sure in a public debate, Coulter's law degree and Ivy League education would make you look even dumber than your writing does. Keep writing this stuff. It makes your race, your gender, and your leftist agenga look even more laughable than it already is.
My first encounter with Cho leaves me wanting more.......2007-02-13
I chose this audio book because I am studying activism and activists (along with being an activist/ally myself). I disagree with the reader-reviewer who said that this work would leave new Cho listeners feeling unwelcome: I was delighted and can't wait for more Margaret Cho. I think the "official" reviews confirm what Cho is "ranting" about -- the mainstream is afraid of the anger of those who are marginalized. Cho offers moving insights such as, "The terrible thing about invisibility is the lengths we will go to to be seen." I am grateful she chooses to be in the public eye.
A revolutionary message.......2006-11-12
This is an easy read, it's nothing like her standup, so don't purchase this with the hopes of getting her notorious and exceptional funny standup performances. Instead it's another side of Cho, one that anyone who has seen enough of her work will not be surprised. What she has to say is interesting, insightful and full of truth and confusion into why things are the way they are, why can't people change for the better. The only people who would probably truly get this book are those that have been victim to the issues she talks about. The others simply won't get it, but those are generally the ones that are causing the demise she points out.
Join Margaret's Fight Club!.......2006-08-22
Sometimes, even if you are a comedienne, you have to get angry, get it all out of your system and say exactly what is on your mind...even if its not the usual comedy in your stand up act. Margaret Cho has done that---something we all need to do considering the political climate we have lived under since the hijacking of the White House by Dubya and his cronies. Once Bush # 2 leaves office, this country will be in a horrible state (actually its already in a horrible state!) and all Margaret is doing is reacting to the devastation created not only by Bush but by the conservative religious right that he so vigorously caters to.
The topics Margaret rants about (and rightly so) ranges from racism, which she has experienced, to the venomous hatred that people have toward gay people and any rights they are asking for. I've always found it so strange that so many Christians have an overpowering hatred of homosexuals when Christ, himself, is a symbol of compassion and love for others. The one group who should be showing more love than anyone else devotes a great deal of hatred to a group of people who only want the same rights in a country that was founded to give its citizens the liberty to choose and live life as an individual without the government forcing unwelcome regulations on his/her personal life.
To my delight she rails on the ridiculous and overbearing Bill O'Reilly and the slender blonde, well dressed daughter of the devil better known as Ann Coulter. While people like O'Reilly and Coulter spew their hatred for anyone but those who appeal to the right wing, Margaret is standing up for those who are being victimized, for people who are looked down upon, for misfits who don't meet the outdated standards of the moral majority or the Republican party. She is standing up for the rights of you and me, for anyone who isn't a cardboard cut out of what conservatives think the typical man or woman should be. She is fighting for you and me to be who we are WITHOUT APOLOGY!
If you are a Margaret Cho fan, you should support her in this endeavor. We should not only support her but also let our voices be heard with her so that the corrupt men who run this great country will see that this country belongs to US and not them. Until Americans realize that politicians and big business have stolen our government and how little our opinions matter, until we make them KNOWN, they will continue on this path and the quality of all of our lives will continue to deteriorate.
This may not be the funniest material Margaret has written but it is certainly necessary. I hope that she will continue to be bold and speak her mind, eventually awakening the sleeping masses to the danger of our disappearing personal freedoms. We need a thousand Chos screaming out to this nation about the injustices that are occuring daily!! Buy this book and share it with a friend!
Book Description
Once world famous as one of Hollywoods most important romantic leading men, today Ramon Novarro is mainly remembered for the manner of his death, a murderthat has become one of the most infamous in Hollywood history.Born in Mexico, Ramon Novarro was at the pinnacle of his career and was Rudolph Valentinos main rival in the Latin Lover category. He starred in a number of blockbusters, including Mata Hari with Greta Garbo, The Prisoner of Zenda, and the original Ben-Hur But behind Novarros carefully cultivated and maintained image of a deeply religious man devoted to his family was a closeted gay man who frequented male hustlers.9ompellingly told and impressively researched to include original interviews with Novarros surviving family, coworkers, former lovers, and the two men convicted of murdering him in 1968, Beyond Paradise provides a unique insight into the life, career, and the truth behind the murder of a seminal Hollywood figure.

Beyond History and Geography.......2007-04-30
Re: Krebsman comment:
In "Beyond Paradise," it is stated that Franklin was located just north of El Paso del Norte, not El Paso. (We're talking 19th century here.)
It says in the book that El Paso del Norte would be renamed "Ciudad Juarez" or "Juarez." Needless to say, Franklin would turn into (or become a part of) what is today known as "El Paso."
The sad life of the screen's first Ben-Hur.......2007-03-04
If silent movie star Ramon Novarro is remembered at all today, it is for two things: his starring role in the original film version of BEN-HUR and his brutal murder in 1968 by two alleged male hustlers. Andre Soares' biography of Novarro, BEYOND PARADISE, is intelligently written and sympathetic towards its subject. Novarro seems to have been a nice Mexican boy who was devoted to his family and his religion. He was also homosexual, which caused him a great deal of spiritual torment in a time when such things were not even mentioned among nice people. He had a rapid rise to stardom in the embryonic motion picture industry and was one of the few silent screen stars to survive the transition to talking pictures (despite his Spanish accent), when he played opposite Greta Garbo in the sound feature MATA HARI. But miscasting combined with a conflicting desire to become an opera singer brought about a slow decline and ultimate obscurity. He also became an alcoholic and, perhaps because of his homosexuality, a virtual recluse. This is a sad story.
There are some factual errors early in the book that made me doubt the accuracy of the other points in the book. For example, he says that Franklin, Texas is slightly north of El Paso when it is actually 300 miles to the East. However, he does set the record straight about the means of Novarro's death. In the 1975 book HOLLYWOOD BABYLON, Kenneth Anger states that Novarro choked to death when his art deco styled artificial phallus was stuffed into his mouth by his assailants. Soares gives the lie to this myth when he quotes official evidence that Novarro not only died from being bludgeoned to death, but that no such object was found among Novarro's possessions, nor did it ever exist.
The trouble I had with the book is that actor biographies are all fairly similar. After reading dozens of them over the years, I don't find most of them very interesting. The best parts of the book for me were the final chapters dealing with the murder and its aftermath. But for those who already have a keen interest in the silent movie era of Hollywood and are already familiar with the actors and directors of the period, BEYOND PARADISE could be compelling reading.
Incredible biography.......2005-09-15
This is an incredibly riveting compelling read, and beyond being entertaining and informative, it's also a balanced thoughtful sensitive portrait of a fascinating human being and actor. Some celebrity biographies seem to have been written by people who can't stand their subject and some are written by people who are too in love with the subject to think clearly, but this one gives a nicely balanced account. We see here a man who was a very fine gifted talented actor, but who eventually became a has-been, for various reasons, who didn't always give his all to selecting the best projects because of his conflicting desire to have a career as an opera singer, and who was deeply torn over his genuine deep committment to his family, his Mexican roots, and his Catholic faith, and how he was also a gay man in a time and a society where that subject was strictly taboo. Even at the time of his murder by two young hustlers, gayness was still considered a psychiatric disorder. Because Ramon kept so much of his life private, this biography can't tell us everything about his personal life, but it is made clear he was:
A very talented actor (he was allowed more range and depth of roles than some of his other romantic leading man counterparts), a man who played to perfection a number of dream roles, most notably that of Judah Ben-Hur in the 1925 version of the screen adaptation of the General Lew Wallace novel, as well as starring with a number of great leading ladies;
A talented singer (even though his acting and singing careers conflicted multiple times and mutually hindered one another);
A devoted family man, deeply religious (he seriously wanted to enter a religious order at several points in his life), becoming the head of the household after his family immigrated to America, as the oldest surviving son in a family of originally twelve children, stepping into the shoes of his father, who had once been a successful dentist but became too ill to support his family during much of his life;
A good human being in spite of natural human flaws (such as his problems with drinking in his later years and several car accidents caused by his heavy drinking);
Someone who sometimes wasn't always the most agreeable person, as evidenced by when he was touring a play in England in the Thirties and getting catcalled by the audience who couldn't hear him, since Ramon had never learnt how to project his voice, being a screen and not stage actor, and actually stepped out of the play to catcall back, "Now, *I* can't hear *you*!"
Even though he is most remembered today for playing the title role in 'Ben-Hur' and for being murdered in his home on Halloween Eve 1968 by two young hustlers, which finally exposed to the public that which he had worked so hard to keep hidden and private (i.e., the fact that he was gay), he was so much more than either of those things, a deeply talented and flawed man. This biography truly does his life and character justice.
Excellent.......2005-09-07
I bought this book at the behest of a friend and have since reread it twice. I am a severe critic of biographies, having read more than I can number. Happliy, Andre Soares' book is a well-written, intelligent and well-balanced account of the life of a man who was both complex and not always very smart in his choices. The book does what all good biographies SHOULD do: make you want to go out and find out more about the subject.
Among the many positive attributes to BEYOND PARADISE are:
* A balanced appraisal of Novarro's personal and professional strengths and weaknesses (this is a hopeless, gushing tome by a misguided fan)
* A willingness to analyze the facts without sensational exploitation of them
* Detailed research and substantive factual foundations
* A sincere (thought not always likeable) portrayal of Mr. Novarro
* A well researched documentation of the studio system that made and ultimately destroyed one of it's brightest stars who is, today, largely forgotten
I cannot recommend this book highly enough - it is one of the best biographies I have read in some years.
The golden age of hollywood.......2005-08-30
this book was very inciteful into the life of one of hollywoods greatest early actors. Although many people are not familiar with him or his work I hope they will take the opportunity to learn more about this wonderful actor and not remember him only due to his tragic death.

Book Description
Knowledge of the endgame is a vital area in chess, and many points are lost through an insufficient understanding of its basic principles. Here, for the aspiring player, a concentration on typical endings likely to occur in practice; rook endings which appear regularly in tournaments; even the often neglected and comparatively simple king and pawn endings.

I owe this book a lot.......2006-05-23
This book discusses the basics (and not so basics) of pawn endings, rook endings (two chapters), minor piece endings, queen endings and finally pawnless endings. It is written in a clear expository style with helpful examples and exercises. I bought it because I decided my endgame play needed remedial work, which I regarded as a necessary evil. Through reading it my attitude was completely turned around and I have become an avid student of endings. I personally found the last chapter, on pawnless endgames, a particular eye-opener.
Four stars does not seem generous to such a book, but I had to admit that after reading the chapter on minor pieces I was not much the wiser about how to use knights in the endgame. In contrast to the policy in other chapters, even the basics of knight blockades were not explained, and I found myself having to supplement the material (as opposed to further study). While omissions in general can be overlooked in a work of limited size, I feel that this one is a distinct flaw in what is generally a fine book.
This is the first enjoyable endgame book I have read! MANDATORY READING........2006-03-08
Some background: I have read HOW TO PLAY THE CHESS ENDINGS by Znosko-Borovsky (a wonderful text for beginners; don't worry about "Related Squares"), A GUIDE TO CHESS ENDINGS by Euwe and Hooper (boring but excellent), WINNING ENDGAME TECHNIQUE by Beliavsky and Mikhalchishin (very underrated!), FROM THE MIDDLEGAME TO THE ENDGAME by Mednis (the best "transition phase" book I have ever read, and I believe an essential work), along with FUNDAMENTAL CHESS ENDINGS by Muller and Lamprecht (of course I did not read all of it, but it is excellent). I have also read other works, and I have DVORETSKY'S ENDGAME MANUAL, but never really took to it.
ESSENTIAL CHESS ENDINGS: THE TOURNAMENT PLAYER'S GUIDE is the first (the only?) enjoyable endgame book I have ever read (I'm not done with it quite yet). GM Howell is an author who, for once, does not feel the need to write for the theoreticians! I am fascinated by the theoretical stuff, but found that I am not nearly as good an endgame player as I assumed I was (because of all the books I read).
I say that this book is mandatory reading because you can actually stay with it and learn the "why's" of the endgame. From the standpoint of helping the competitive player, I may come to regard it as the best endgame text I have yet read, which includes all those other works mentioned. Howell clearly explains play in the most important types of endgames (pawns, rooks, minor pieces, queens). He also has a sense of humor, a rare species indeed in endgame works.
My advice (I'll say that I am an 1800 player so that you know my point of view) is to look at Znosko-Borovsky's endgame book first. If this seems too daunting at first, begin with a Pandolfini book (I usually don't recommend his books, but some are good), then move on to Znosko-Borovsky. After that, Howell's book. Also, please get the Mednis book I mentioned above--I think it is his best work (nearly all of his works were high-quality, and I have read most of them), and fills a void in chess literature. Later on, try the Beliavsky/Mikhalchishin work.
Having read a lot of the theoretical endgame books above, my advice (further) is to skip them! I can impress my friends by giving checkmate with 2 knights vs. pawn (we practiced this one Friday night!?!), but you know what? I recently realized that I shortchanged myself in learning REAL endgames. Don't let this happen to you as well. And if it has, remedy this as quickly as possible!
I also have gotten Chernev's CAPABLANCA'S BEST CHESS ENDINGS, and while I havent't really studied it yet, it looks FANTASTIC in terms of showing winning technique-in-action.
Your next secret weapon.......2005-07-26
By this point in chess history, legions of chess amateurs have awakened to the importance of studying tactics, tactics, tactics.... Perhaps the next big thing to consume the consciousness of the chess public will endgames. After all, when we are all tactical geniuses, many more games will have to be decided in the endgame. As we approach our sudden-death time controls, we will need to be able to bang out the winning book endings without hesitation. A good book for learning endgames will be our next secret weapon.
Well established warhorses such as Dvoretsky's "Endgame Manual", Muller and Lamprecht's "Fundamental Chess Endings," and Reuben Fine's newly revised "Basic Chess Endings" can serve as reference works on the subject. But what about learning the material for the first time? Very few players can (or should) contemplate working these books from beginning to end. However, Howell's marvelous book is just the ticket.
Howell selects just several dozen of the sorts of endings a tournament player is likely to face in practice. Then he carefully illustrates the winning plan (usually an example from an actual top-level game), giving general guidelines for the right strategy, and illustrating typical tricks, maneuvers and techniques. He also furnishes practical advice for the weaker side, which is just as important. Chapters are arranged by material (i.e., the pieces and pawns left). There are a few exercises (and their solutions) at the end of each chapter to reinforce and extend the treatment.
Howell is an accomplished English Grandmaster and a gifted writer. The explanations have just the right amount of detail to accompany the technical analysis; he anticipates and answers a lot of reasonable questions; his selection of material is really spot on. He also writes with an understated humor that makes the work even more enjoyable. His experience as a coach and competitor are obvious, as is his affection for the game.
The physical and editorial qualities of the book are top notch.
If you are an advanced beginner in chess, then "Pandolfini's Endgame Course" might be the place to start (be sure to download the many corrections!). Or better yet, work through Pandolfini as a series of exercises. Howell would then be a great next step. After that, you might be ready to tackle Dvoretsky.
Ian Snape has also written a fine endgame book of a similar level.
Brilliant Intermediate Level End Game Book.......2004-12-10
Background: Currently, my ELO fluctuates between 1950 to about 2000, and I've made steady progress from about 1500 3 years ago. My initial upward surge could be attributed to a lot of tactical practice, and applying good middle game principles, and avoiding rapid chess. Most importantly, I kind of over-analyzed my losses, which really helped.
Just to give you a reference point, I'd give the Amateur's Mind 4 stars, although of course, it's a different subject (the Middle Game). Quite simply, James Howell has written a very high quality and more importantly, a very verbose end game (EG) book that I think is the ideal 2nd stage book on the EG. I also happen to have Dvoetsky's EG manual CD, and I realized that I was much better served by following Dvoertsky's own advice - learn a few concrete positions on the EG, but learn them thoroughly. If you've completed a basic chess ending's book such as those by Seirawan, Pandolphini, etc., then this book is a highly recommended next step.
I throughly enjoy Howell's didactic writing style - he takes the time to give you guidelines (often 4 or 5 steps) for both the superior side and the inferior side. I've learned not only the correct plan or technique to execute a winning position, but also, the correct plan to make life a lot harder for my opponent when my position is inferior. This is a critical piece of advice, given that (your opponent's) time pressure often allows you to save a lost ending. Another important thing about his heavy use of text and guidelines is that it is important for an intermediate level player (roughly 1600 - 1900 ELO) to have the ideas explained in detail. This is a little different from tactics books/CDs where the emphasis is on practice, practice, and more practice along multiple themes/motifs.
I'm quite surprised that this book hasn't gotten much press (although Silman's comments that this is a quality book is spot on).
My suggestion: After going through a basic endings book/CD/pgn file, this is a GREAT next step. I've finished 75% of this book over a 3 month period (remember, study these positions thoroughly), and I'm pretty sure that Dvoretsky's will be a very good next step.
Finally, as I look back at all the various books and phases I've picked up, I can firmly conclude that the thing that has helped me most is lots of tactical practice (starting with Winning chess Tactics, and then the George Renko CD), along with a basic understanding of the MG (Amateur's Mind), and then James Howell's book. This is a short & sweet, but very good quality book.
AbsolutelyEssential! Beginners, Intermediates, WeakAdvanced.......2000-03-25
Jeremy Silman in "Inside Chess" writes that Essential Chess Endings, along with Soltis' Grandmaster Secrets: Endings and Shereshevsky's Endgame Stratey, are three books that together provide 2400 level knowledge of the endgame. Howell explains clearly and thoughtfully king & pawn endgames, rook & pawn endgames, minor piece endings, queen endings, pawnless endings, etc. He insists you think for yourself but he does provide general principles to guide one's calculations. I read the book as 1800 USCF player and found it to be both useful and interesting. Yes, interesting! If you're bored or afraid of endgames, but know you must study them anyway, try Howell.

Even to those without Marxist sympathies, Che Guevara (1928-67) was a dashing, charismatic figure: the asthmatic son of an aristocratic Argentine family whose sympathy for the world's oppressed turned him into a socialist revolutionary, the valued comrade-in-arms of Cuba's Fidel Castro and a leader of guerilla warfare in Latin America and Africa. Journalist Jon Lee Anderson's lengthy and absorbing portrait captures the complexities of international politics (revolutionary and counter); his painstaking research has unearthed a remarkable amount of new material, including information about Guevara's death at the hands of the Bolivian military.
Book Description
This New York Times “Notable Book of the Year” is the definitive biography on Che Guevara, whose epic dream was to end poverty and injustice in Latin America through armed revolution. Anderson’s biography traces Che’s extraordinary life, from his comfortable Argentine upbringing to the Cuban revolution, from the halls of power in Castro’s government to his failed campaign in the Congo and assassination in the Bolivian jungle.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the Best.......2007-08-28
This is an excellent biography. It shows Guevara from all perspectives; personal, political, and as a historical figure. I can't recommend this book highly enough. As for Anderson, he needs to include better documentation for his sources. This is supposed to be history not a movie script.
Great for a classroom study but not for...........2007-06-03
This book is so full of information it begins to sound more like a step by step account of Che's life. I was sincerely looking forward to reading interesting and historical facts but there are more long winded historical segues and side stories narrated in the third person than one would expect from a biographical book. One example relates to an account of Che's purchase of a gift for a friend which spans 2 pages--was this a major event by normal standards: probably not. At times I felt as if I was reading the report of someone who had too much information but did not want to truncate it under the belief that it would seem dishonest.
However, if you dont mind reading minute details about someone as interesting as Che, then you should buy this book. If you are more interested in getting to the heart of his ideology and political inclinations, look elsewhere.
The Ultimate Book about Che!.......2007-04-30
This book is extremely detailed about Che's life. The author has researched his life so thoroughly. It is also very unbiased, explaining flaws of his character.
A capitalist at heart, this book made me understand the anti-imperialist sentiment in the world, as Che visits Mayan ruins and an American copper mine in Chile. The book also explains the United Fruit Company's presence in Latin America and the politics behind it.
This book also details the Cuban revolution. What an interesting story!! I didn't realize how smart Castro is or that he came from a rich family.
By the time you finish this book, you may not LOVE Che, but you will understand why he fought.
the best book on che.......2007-02-20
This is a balanced, well researched, and easy to read treatise on Che. A good portion of the book details the revolution and you also get to know Fidel well.
thorough.......2007-01-03
Excellent and objective book on Che Guevara. A long read (750 pages) but written in a very readable and chronological fashion. This book is also very insightful regarding the events leading up to and after the Cuban Revolution and provides a lot of insight on Fidel Castro as well. Highly recommended.

Che Guevara (1928-1967) embodied the utopian dreams of a whole generation of left-wing theorists and activists. His burning and relentless ambitions combined with his fearlessness have all contributed to his status as a modern day political idol. This monograph describes the myth and the reality of an extraordinary and eventful life, which excites and fascinates even today.

Portrait of a charismatic and courageous (if at times ruthless) man .......2007-08-05
Historian Frank Niess presents Che Guevara, an in-depth biography of social revolutionary Che Guevara (1928-1967) that separates myth from reality. Expertly translated from the original German by Nathaniel McBride, Che Guevara covers Guevara's upbringing, his involvement in the Cuban Revolution, his desire to spread his ideology to other nations of South America and Africa, and much more, illustrated with vintage black-and-white photographs. "Che Guevara might not have become the revered revolutionary idol he did had he been satisfied with his part in just one, namely the Cuban, revolution... He had hopes of bringing about radical political change in his own country of Argentina, and, as one would expect of a dedicated internationalist and pan-American, he dreamed of a revolution across the entire continent. Following his years of political apprenticeship in Guatemala, he had become convinced that this region would one day become one of the most important arenas of revolutionary struggle." Notes, a chronology and an index round out this in-depth portrait of a charismatic and courageous (if at times ruthless) man who dedicated his life to his beliefs.

Book Description
This book on Che Guevara was the first book to be published on the guerrilla hero in the revolutionary year of 1968, when all change seemed possible.
Book Description
In the 300 years between the conquest of Alexander the Great and the battle at Actium, continual warfare had a dramatic effect on Hellenistic society and culture. Exploiting the abundant primary sources available, this book examines the many different ways in which war shaped the Hellenistic world. The volume shows how war was intimately connected with economic, social and political life, looking at the connections between war and religion, the ideology of Hellenistic monarchy, the rule of elites, and technological change. At the same time, the book continually draws attention to the experience of war, both from the battlefield perspective of professional soldiers, and from that of its victims - non-combatants, women and children.

A Book For Experts.......2005-10-04
I have very mixed feelings about this book; let's start with the positive. The book is a superb piece of scholarship and is in most respects very well written. A reader who wishes to follow this book will have plethora of well-referenced latest scholarly sources. The book gives a clear indication of the political chaos in which the Greek city-states lived in the Hellenistic era. It was business as usual as they participated in the ancient petty bickerings that had already lasted seven hundred years. They existed in an almost constant state of internecine warfare as they continued their traditional struggles for land, rights, prestige and control of religious sanctuaries.
There are however serious negatives. More attention is given to the small city-states than to the large Hellenistic kingdoms. In fact, Mr. Chaniotis, an expert on the history of Crete spends far more time on conditions in Crete than in ANY of the Hellenistic successor kingdoms. While his knowledge of epigraphical information is amazing (at least for sites on Crete) he gives short shrift to the traditional historians, and mentions coins hardly at all. The author also seems to hold American sources in low esteem, ignoring most works within the last decade. This book presupposes an enormous knowledge of the history of the period (i.e. Third Macedonian War, campaigns of Antiochus III, the Sixth Syrian War and so forth). Now this, most students of the period can understand as a background; but what about the constant wars of the tiny Cretan city-states??? Have many experts in the period have ever heard of the War of Lyttos in Crete??? The author also quotes at length a propagandistic inscription of Ptolemy II about the Third Syrian War that is so historically inaccurate that it is dangerously misleading to the casual reader. The author has also made numerous references to contemporary political events; he supports the Palestinians against Israel; and spends four pages on trying to explain why women didn't take their place in the line of battle! Finally, many chapters are repetitive in content and show poor editing; a good editor would have noted subsequent refences to information and not have treated them as new references. What we have here are trees, but no paths through the forests, and a guide who would much rather take you to his favorite olive grove than the deep woods.
Book Description
Have the poor fared best by participating in conventional electoral politics or by engaging in mass defiance and disruption? The authors of the classic Regulating The Poor assess the successes and failures of these two strategies as they examine, in this provocative study, four protest movements of lower-class groups in 20th century America:
-- The mobilization of the unemployed during the Great Depression that gave rise to the Workers' Alliance of America
-- The industrial strikes that resulted in the formation of the CIO
-- The Southern Civil Rights Movement
-- The movement of welfare recipients led by the National Welfare Rights Organization.

Relevant and instructive.......2006-06-04
As both a heady intellectual and a pragmatic field organizer, I have throughly enjoyed this book. Don't be thrown off by the dry (yet incisive) introduction on the cycles of social movements. The chapters that follow provide journalistic historical narrative on the civil rights, labor, welfare rights movements and illustrate their theory. I would highly recommend it.
A timeless classic that all activists should buy.......2000-03-30
Piven and Cloward's work will always be useful in the study of social movements. I enjoyed this book and think others will as well. I don't believe this book should ONLY be read by students and academics but ALSO anyone that is trying to organize and motivate individuals to take political action. The authors explain why some movements fail and how movements change over time which is interesting for both activists and academics. Although, a great deal of the theoretical discussion has been advanced since this book was written, the book still offers relevant agruements and incites. A similar book would include Tarrow's - Power in Movement. Yet, Piven and Cloward offer more historical background that would compliment Tarrow's newer theoretical work. Last, the topics in this book vary from chapters on social unrest during the Depression to the Civil Rights Movement. The book can be read by anyone because the authors give historical background on all topics.

Book Description
For four years between 1998 and 2002, Birds Australia co-ordinated the largest continent-wide survey of birds in the world. Over 7 000 atlasers - equipped with binoculars, field guides, GPS units and notebooks - produced 270 000 bird lists and nearly five million bird records.
The New Atlas of Australian Birds marks the culmination of these efforts, presenting 4 000 distribution maps for over 650 bird species, including seasonal changes and breeding range. Change maps are also presented for 250 species, identifying those that are more common or less common since the first Atlas of Australian Birds was completed 20 years ago.
Whether birdwatching among the Snappy Gums of the Great Sandy Desert or the Snow Gums in Tasmania, The New Atlas of Australian Birds will tell you which birds you can expect to see there. Essential to environmental planners as well as bird enthusiasts, The New Atlas of Australian Birds includes a delightful range of drawings commissioned from leading Australian artists, and sets a new benchmark in our knowledge of bird distribution.
