5 out of 5 stars Goofy Things Said in Court.......2006-12-05

The book is a collection of things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down by court reporters. It must be tough to record some of these exchanges without laughing out loud. Fun reading for anyone, but if you have a friend who's a lawyer or a judge, it might be the perfect gift for them.

                Book Description

The unlikely and very funny tale of a world-famous Shakespearean actor making an action movie in today's go-go capitalist Russia

He was the raging, youthful Tybalt in Franco Zeffirelli's classic film Romeo and Juliet. He was a divinely decadent foil to Liza Minnelli's divinely decadent Sally Bowles in Bob Fosse's Oscar-winning Cabaret. And he won over an entirely new generation in the Austin Powers movies. Now Michael York is off to make the biggest independent film in Russian history-in the capitalist Wild Wild West that is today's Russia. York is co-starring alongside the 300-pound, 6-foot-6-inch Russian bodybuilder Alexander Nevsky (think Arnold Schwarzenegger) in an action film called Moscow Heat.

With a self-deprecating wit reminiscent of Charles Grodin in It Would Be So Nice If You Weren't Here, an eye trained on the imponderables of day-to-day life (especially in faraway places-what on earth did the hotel's laundry list mean by the mysterious men's garment it called "blinkers"?), and with an increasingly alarmed sense of how the new Russia, for all its capitalist trappings, is becoming ever more like the old Russia under an ever more autocratic government, Michael York has crafted a deliciously readable insider's account that transcends genre. There's much here to be found about the actor's craft, much to be found about Russia then and now-but most of all there is the singular pleasure of being in the company of a witty and delightfully articulate observer of people, places, and the remarkable adventure called moviemaking.

                    Book Description

Musicians frequently incorporated portions of works by other musicians into their own compositions and performances throughout the twentieth century. This book examines how this practice of "quotation" affected cultural dialogues regarding race, childhood, madness and the mass media. When a musician borrows from a piece, he or she draws upon not only a melody but also the cultural associations of the original piece. By working with and altering a melody, a musician also transforms those associations.

5 out of 5 stars The Straight Dope.......2005-09-23

I think the book will be extremely usefull to all pool players that are use to moving the cue ball all over the table with little regard for absolute position and control.
It's a no nonsense approach to the game of Straight Pool and Billiards in general. It a good resource that can be usefull in all cue games.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on straight pool ever written.......2005-08-19

To my great pleasure, I've noticed a number of posts recently from players taking up the game of straight pool for the first time. I've been playing 14.1 (straight pool) for almost 40 years, and I consider it the most challenging and fascinating of all the pool games.

Oddly, though, in all my years of playing, I've seldom seen a decent book on straight pool. Only George Fels' (all his books are excellent) nearly 15 year old book is worthwhile for the aspiring straight pool player. But now there is a terrific new addition.

One of the greatest straight pool players of all time, Babe Cranfield, has produced a really useful book on straight pool called "The Straight Pool Bible". I highly recommend this book to anyone--newcomer to veteran. It is concise, accurate, filled with wonderful insights and advice, and provides clear and useful illustrations. I particularly enjoyed that he emphasizes there is seldom only one correct way to run a rack. He acknowledges there can be many effective routes to the break ball. His advice, then, is not dogmatic, rather, it is dynamic, suggesting concepts over rigid patterns. (He does, however, offer some common "by the numbers" patterns to illustrate points.) His sections on pattern play and position will help players of any game, from straight to 9-ball. This is one great book.

                    2 out of 5 stars A very mixed bag.......2003-08-02

Covers some aspects of Straight Pool...but never in enough depth or clarity. More worth your money are Capelle's "Play your Best Straight Pool" (everything you can imagine about the game) and Fels' classic "Advanced Pool" (not quite as in depth as Capelle, but with good sections on the mental aspect of pool, plus several racks analyzed shot by shot). To be perfectly honest, I junked Babe's book a month after buying it; I simply had no use for it alongside better books like the above-mentioned.

4 out of 5 stars A book from one of the best........2002-12-03

I've had the pleasure of watching Babe Cranfield play on numerous occasions. In my opinion, he ranks as one of the the top straight pool players of all time. The beauty of his game was an aggressive style coupled with brilliant pattern play. Few could run a rack in the simple uncomplicated manner of the Babe. This book conveys the importance of pocketing balls in the correct sequence to ensure run-outs without moving the cueball all over the table - a lost art to the modern nine ball player. While there are no new fundamentals or deep secrets revealed, the reader does gain insight from one of the finest gentlemen to ever play the game.

                    2 out of 5 stars If there's one thing this is, it's a book.......2001-01-30

Cranfield and Moy do manage to get across a few useful facts and strategies for straight pool, but there's really nothing new here. Not only is the content of the book fairly weak, it's also full of technical inaccuracies. Considering the level of play that Cranfield was at, it's interesting to note that he apparently has no grasp whatsoever of the actual effects of english and throw. While a good player of any of the other cuesports might find this a useful introduction to the strategy of straight pool, I think a beginner may find this book does irreparable harm to his understanding of basic fundamentals.

                                Book Description

This memoir offers an American woman's uniquely privileged view into the pastoral Scotland of today. By turns funny, heartwarming, and occasionally sad, it is the author's account of her marriage to a Scottish landowner and of the years they spent together at "The Guynd," his large ancestral estate. We follow her steep learning curve in dealing with a grand and crumbling mansion still recovering from the effects of two World Wars, as well as an overgrown landscape, a derelict garden, troublesome tenants, local aristocracy, Scottish rituals, and a husband for whom change is anathema.

A son and heir draws the author into an intimate relationship with every tier of the local society, while a visiting American friend heightens the strain of the ever-present culture gap. Alternating between enchantment and despair, Rathbone digs into family and local history in an effort to understand her surroundings and free her husband from the grip of the past.

Like a letter home from a strange land, this book offers a view of Scotland not found in the guide books. The tale of the journey through the wrought iron gates and up the long tree-lined drive into the living past is both wry and poignant, both oddball and deeply reflective of the ties that bind us.

5 out of 5 stars An engaging memoir about a Scottish mansion and a marriage.......2007-02-16

I wanted to read this witty memoir because of my romantic childhood fantasy of living in a mansion or castle in Europe. Oh how lucky the American author was to have fallen in love with Scottish man with an ancestral home and property. I was rather envious of their son, Elliot, who was able to spend his childhood exploring and playing in the gardens, on the lake, and in the house.

But life isn't a fairytale. This is a story about a deteriorated, cluttered mansion, its 400 acres and a marriage that started as a whirlwind romance and came to mirror the mansion itself.

There's a lot of humor in the writing. How could you not laugh at the author's stories about how hard it was to heat the house, find proper tenants, clear out a garden untouched for decades and to try to throw junk out when married to someone who can find a use for everything.

If you don't know what an Aga stove is, you soon will. I highly recommend this book, but suggest curling up in a warm house with a hot cup of tea and a blanket. You'll need it.

4 out of 5 stars My heart's in the Highlands -- or is it?.......2006-01-31

I couldn't put this charming book down. Having a near life-long desire to live in Scotland or Ireland (I know -- they're not the same!), I couldn't resist ordering this book. Ms. Rathbone is a fine writer and evokes her Scottish home in both its glory and its -- well, not tatters, but let's say less happy aspects. I still want to go to Scotland -- but she made me see things a little more realistically than I had before.

The book ends too abruptly -- tho' I respect the author's reasons for doing so. But it's still a "grrrand" book and I look forward to reading more by Belinda Rathbone.

5 out of 5 stars the after of jane austen's before.......2005-12-11

What a suprising treat this book is! Darcy and Elizabeth meet some two centuries later (sure enough, at a wedding), their courtship is literally a picnic, and they proceed to spend the next ten years trying to bring his four-hundred-year-old estate back to its former glory, absent one essential ingredient: money. While Rathbone clearly has other mentors besides Austen -- Henry James, Evelyn Waugh and John McPhee come to mind -- her voice is distinctly her own, often funny, always precise. The perfect book to give to friends who are sick and tired (much as they were 200 years ago) of reading about war.

4 out of 5 stars Not just another foreign fixer-upper .......2005-10-31

I purchased this book after skimming the editorial reviews, thinking this would be something like Frances Mayes books on Tuscany, or Carol Drinkwater's series on Provence (both of which I recommend.)

This book is also about a couple confronted with a dilapidated treasure of a house in an interesting setting. However, it is also the story of two ultimately incompatible people, and is, in fact, a sort of generously and often humorously presented autopsy on a marriage.

For some reason, it is enormously enjoyable to sit back in your comfortable chair and read all the frustrating, back-breaking details (and triumphs) of restoring a very old house and its grounds. This book provides a full measure of this delight, both indoors and out. In fact, some of the landscaping challenges are staggering!

The book ends rather abruptly, with the author's realization of the degree to which she and her husband are disconnected.

The reader is left with the rather wistful hope that despite the fact that the author and her son now live in Massachusetts, not Scotland, their tie to Guynd is not entirely broken.

                                Book Description

In April 2003, after a month of heavy bombardment, Baghdad fell under coalition forces' control. The forces established the Coalition Provisional Authority and in the heart of the city, an 8km square mile "Green Zone" was formed to maintain order until the new Iraqi government became a reality.

This title focuses on the lives of those soldiers whose task it was to bring stability to the area, primarily recounting the experiences of Task Force 1st Armored Division (TF 1AD) ("Old Ironsides"). The division's first operation, dubbed Iron Dig, was intended to verify the death of Saddam Hussein by finding his remains in a bombed restaurant in Baghdad. This was the first of many operations that combined combat and intelligence skills in attempts to capture or kill significant numbers of former regime leaders that were thought to be responsible for the remainder of attacks on coalition forces.

This unique theater of operations severely tested the troops on many levels, both personally and professionally, as not only did they have to deal with living and fighting in extremely high temperatures, poor standards of living, and little respite, but also their operations became the center stage of a controversial debate surrounding the occupation.

Discussed are the soldiers' personal experiences from recruitment, specialist training, and weaponry; to the aftermath and effects that the conflict had on them. The author, Ken Estes, uses interviews and recently declassified material to offer a full and accurate insight into this controversial theater of war.

The US First Army was the overall command for American troops in France from D-Day until the breakout from Normandy when Patton's Third Army was added to the mix. Patton's Third Army gets more press, but the First Army was the senior partner and was right beside the Third all the way into Germany. This French-produced publication looks at the US First Army in Normandy. Overall the traslation from the original French is quite good. The book is organized by location and follows the efforts of the Americans to drive the Germans back to create a secure lodgement in Europe and then to liberate France. The content is heavily pictorial and includes over 200 newly pubished photos as well as some old favorites. Some photos offer comparisons between an area during combat and current pictures of the rebuilt buildings. There are better books describing the course of the battle and the strategic implications, but this volume will be welcomed by many historians due to its excellent graphics. It really compliments a WW2 historical collection.

                                  Book Description

Those who imagined that the arrival of a major American force in North Africa would immediately tip the balance against Rommel's Afrika Korps were to be proved badly wrong.

Just how ill-prepared the GI Army and its generals were became horrifically apparent at the Kasserine Pass. In his typically thorough and fast-moving style, Charles Whiting examines these events and the reasons for the debacle, which shook America deeply.

                                            Book Description

Why did early medieval kings declare certain properties to be immune from the judicial and fiscal encroachments of their own agents? Did weakness compel them to prohibit their agents from entering these properties, as historians have traditionally believed? In a richly detailed book that will be greeted as a landmark addition to the literature on the Middle Ages, Barbara H. Rosenwein argues that immunities were markers of power. By placing restraints on themselves and their agents, kings demonstrated their authority, affirmed their status, and manipulated the boundaries of sacred space.

Rosenwein transforms our understanding of an institution central to the political and social dynamics of medieval Europe. She reveals how immunities were used by kings and other leaders to forge alliances with the noble families and monastic centers that were central to their power. Generally viewed as unchanging juridical instruments, immunities as they appear here are as fluid and diverse as the disparate social and political conflicts that they at once embody and seek to defuse. Their legacy reverberates in the modern world, where liberal institutions, with their emphasis on state restraint, clash with others that encourage governmental intrusion. The protections against unreasonable searches and seizures provided by English common law and the U.S. Constitution developed in part out of the medieval experience of immunities and the institutions that were elaborated to breach them.
