Sometimes it seems like every standup comedian worth his or her salt just has to do the book thing, and you might feel that yet another warmed-over stage routine is the last thing you need taking up valuable bookshelf space. Jon Stewart's book will come as an extremely pleasant surprise. He eschews the standard standup patter and instead gives us 18 short comic essays in a variety of styles that recall the prose work of Woody Allen, only with a few more references to genitals. Stewart proves himself a remarkably nimble humorist with a sharp eye for parody, whether he's writing "A Very Hanson Christmas" or "Adolf Hitler: The Larry King Interview."

HITLER: ...Larry, look, I was a bad guy. No question. I hate that Hitler. The yelling, the finger pointing, I don't know ... I was a very angry guy.

KING: And this ... new Hitler?

HITLER: I get up at seven, have half a melon, do the jumble in the morning paper and then let the day take me where it will.... Me!! The inventor of the Blitzkrieg... When you stop having to control everything it's very freeing.

Stewart is not afraid to flirt with bad taste, in fact, some of the pieces in this collection do for "flirting with bad taste" what Bill Clinton did for "not having sexual relations." But it's wonderful to see an edgy comedian taking on the traditionally cozy genre of the humorous essay, creating work that combines the wit of Robert Benchley with the energy and attitude of the best modern standup. Naked Pictures of Famous People proves that Jon Stewart is as comfortable, and accomplished, in front of a word processor as he is in front of an audience. --Simon Leake

5 out of 5 stars If you have a sense of humour, he brings the reason for having one!.......2007-09-26

Yes, i am an enthusiastic fan of Mr. Stewart - i call him "The Mark Twain of Our Time" - for good reason. I'll get killed for that, but trust me - Twain was as controversial in his time, and about the same amount smart.

This book pulls no punches. That is exactly the way punches are meant to be. Some of these punches even knock me back. No "Sacred Cow" remained un-slaughtered in the creation of this book.

        You have been warned.

If you can take it - then get this book, and GET IT. This isn't as politically-focused as America - the Book, and so it might appeal to open-humoured persons less into that arena. I'm a fan of all of it - but this is refreshing and just as crammed full to bursting of actual unadulterated (adult) wit. Remember wit?

        Jon does.

        5 out of 5 stars It's Time for Prayer: Where's Cap'n Crunch?.......2007-09-03

I'm a 17 year old girl and this is one of THE best books I've ever read! I am a HUGE fan of The Daily Show and Jon Stewart, so I was pretty sure I'd like this book, and I was SO freakin right. It's hilarious! And so accurate! Jon Stewart is brilliant with these essays. It normally takes me a while to read a book, but I finished this book really fast. I couldn't stop reading it! I actually got yelled at a couple of times in class for reading it while the teachers were talking, but it was so funny! I highly recommend this book to ANYONE that doesn't mind a little offensive humor. I dunno why people think it's mean. It's not like Jon Stewart is saying offensive things about them. He's talking about well known celebrities, and is OBVIOUSLY kidding. I am so glad I bought this book.

4 out of 5 stars Don't read if you are famous.......2007-08-23

I really enjoy the humor in this book, though I can see why some might not. It is the kind of thing that you read and think, "Is it okay to laugh at that?" The answer, of course, is yes. I am sure that JFK is up in Kennedy Heaven (like normal Heaven, but bigger) laughing about the jokes in this book.

        2 out of 5 stars had a moment.......2007-08-21

Just as the title of this review states, that's all it had, just A moment. I really only laughed once throughout the whole thing. As I was reading it I could feel the disgusted look on my face, as if I was watching a car accident. I wanted it to be funny, but it just wasn't. I read the excerpt that Amazon gave on it, and that one bit was funny, just that ONE bit. Not even the rest of the Hitler interview was that funny. I tried to finish it but I simply couldn't. I tried to give it two stars, to be nice, but I just couldn't, so, for it making me laugh but only once, I give it one star.

5 out of 5 stars Jon Stewart is the best.......2007-07-29

Jon Stewart should be teaching journalism classes; his program, his sense of humor, his irreverence is priceless!

5 out of 5 stars Very Important for Beginners.......2004-04-21

I agree with the others reviewers that most of the information is is a checklist of don't forgets and filled with information that is "common: sense, but I still think that it is a very valuable book.

I am a film student and I have worked on an indy feature film and a commercial and I believe that both of those projects could have gone much better had the producers/directors had this information.

This book is perfect for the person who has no knowledge of film, but needs an overview of the process in order to get teir feet wet. The book also contains all the necessary forms for each phase of making a film.

              5 out of 5 stars A Great, Comprehensive Book.......2002-05-29

This is a sorely underappreciated book. I've owned a copy for years, and it's provided wonderful ideas and sound advice for beginning movie-makers. It even goes into detail on such subjects as casting, choosing 16mm or 35mm film, finding props, and location shooting.

              I highly recommend this one.

3 out of 5 stars Another book whose gold nuggets are buried deeply in bs.......2000-06-09

This book is not what I thought it would be. As I read, I came to the conclusion that most of what I was reading was common sense (which is never common) and anecdotal stories. Not what I was looking for....

5 out of 5 stars I have owned a copy of this book since 1985, one of the best.......1999-02-17

Dan Bessie came to an SFSU Film Student Union, meeting in 1985, with his then fist ed. of this book. I still have my copy. I have been teaching production for the last 10 years (in LA) where everyone wants to direct. I tell them to read this book first. If you do your homework as outlined in this book (on your low or high budget film) you will be able to focus on getting the image on film. Production of a film or video project requiers skills that many people need to work on. This book helps to outline the steps that must first be taken. There is no better outline I have found.

2 out of 5 stars Not so great........1998-07-07

I bought this expecting it to be full of simple, how-to information, but unfortunately such is not the case. Basically the book is a big, long list of "don't forget to..."s. She explains everything you will need to do to make a movie, but doesn't explain how to do any of it.

She explains what the duties of the producer are, what they need to keep in mind, what they need to make sure to do, what they need to be prepared for, but that's it. There really isn't any information on how-to *make* a movie (the actual process), but instead information on what needs to be arranged in the making of a movie. Mostly she says "you're going to have to do this.... to find out how to do that ask around or hire someone". I bought the book because I don't want to (and can't afford to) hire someone and there's really not that many people I can ask for help.

However, I'm not saying the book is worthless, it's just not a book for someone who wants to make their own movie. This is a book for prospective *producers*. A producer that arranges more than creates. If your interest is in writing, directing, or shooting your own film, then look somewhere else. This book is better for someone who isn't creating a movie at all but instead arranging for the creation of a movie (in other words, a producer).

                              Book Description

If the Marines are "the few, the proud," Recon Marines are the fewest and the proudest. Nathaniel Fick's career begins with a hellish summer at Quantico, after his junior year at Dartmouth. He leads a platoon in Afghanistan just after 9/11 and advances to the pinnacle—Recon—two years later, on the eve of war with Iraq. His vast skill set puts him in front of the front lines, leading twenty-two Marines into the deadliest conflict since Vietnam. He vows to bring all his men home safely, and to do so he'll need more than his top-flight education. Fick unveils the process that makes Marine officers such legendary leaders and shares his hard-won insights into the differences between military ideals and military practice, which can mock those ideals. In this deeply thoughtful account of what it's like to fight on today's front lines, Fick reveals the crushing pressure on young leaders in combat. Split-second decisions might have national consequences or horrible immediate repercussions, but hesitation isn't an option. One Bullet Away never shrinks from blunt truths, but ultimately it is an inspiring account of mastering the art of war.

Want to know the what it's like to be an junior Officer? The loneliness, the NCO's you rely on, the men, the idiots above you? Read this. A simultaneous must read is Evan Wright's Generation Kill. Identical time amd place seen from two very different perspectives.

In addition to excellent content, this is a very readable book and Nate Fick compactly explains things about military life and the warrior ethos that aren't well understood outside the military. A couple page glossary of military abbreviations would be a welcome addition though.

Most of my Amazon reviews deal with grilling, but I felt compelled to give my opinion. Nathaniel Fick is welcome to dine on steak or some pulled pork at my home any time he visits Bloomington, Indiana. The book is wonderfully written. He skillfully balanced descriptions of the people, events and emotions he encountered during his tour with the USMC. He did not rely on the tool of describing the technology of modern warfare to impress his reader. He is no Tom Clancy and I found this to be refreshing.

I went to his website and read an number of articles and reviews he has published since completing this book. He makes a number of astute observations on politics, the war, and the state of our nation. I hope to see more from him soon.

Enough praise has already been heaped and another 5-star review won't change a 5-star average. A few hopefully new comments:

                              - Frick allows critical details of his personal life to trickle out in undeclared intimations; e.g., he's probably Catholic and probably had a girlfriend. The story would have meant more to me if I'd known exactly who was speaking. The narrative does a decently indirect job of this, but I wonder how many scenes were left out that could have showed us more of who he is?

                              - Why does that matter? Well, not to be a jaded 40-something who grew up in a very political environment, but I cannot imagine a clearer statement of intent to run for office. Let's see... Military hero? Check. Exposure of sensitive side? Check. Willingness to put in the hours? Check. Ability to lead others? Check. Ability to turn a phrase? Check. Empathy with the common man? Check.

I have nothing against the idea and I'd probably even vote for him. I'm just surprised nobody else has noticed this... And perhaps the explanation to my first comment is cleared up by the observation of the second.

5 out of 5 stars A rare view of the USMC.......2007-08-11

Nathaniel Fick tells an interesting story from an unusual perspective. How many books can you find written about the experiences of a Marine Corps officer in war? A fair handful. How many such books can you find written by an articulate liberal arts major? Maybe just this one.

The author's educated perspective on the Marine Corps perfectly underlines the amazing strengths and the maddening weakness of the Marine Corps, depicting that certain je ne sais quois those in or around the Marines understand and critics never see.
He manages to illustrate his respect for the Marines and his mission while still exposing the stupidity of military bureaucracy, showing clearly that the good or evil possible with our military forces can really boil down to a good person or a fundamentally bad person in charge of a lowly combat platoon.
If you want a thoughtful perspective on the USMC or the opening days of the war in Iraq, this book is up your alley.

                                      Book Description

The only comprehensive account of the Battle of Fort Fisher and the basis for the television documentary Confederate Goliath, Rod Gragg's award-winning book chronicles in detail one of the most dramatic events of the American Civil War. Known as "the Gibraltar of the South," Fort Fisher was the largest, most formidable coastal fortification in the Confederacy, by late 1864 protecting its lone remaining seaport—Wilmington, North Carolina. Gragg's powerful, fast-paced narrative recounts the military actions, political maneuvering, and personality clashes involved in this unprecedented land and sea battle. It vividly describes the greatest naval bombardment of the war and shows how the fort's capture in January 1865 hastened the South's surrender three months later. In his foreword, Civil War historian Edward G. Longacre surveys Gragg's work in the context of Civil War history and literature, citing Confederate Goliath as "the finest book-length account of a significant but largely forgotten episode in our nation's most critical conflict."

AUTHOR BIO: Rod Gragg is the author or editor of fourteen books on American history, including The Declaration of Independence: Forging of a Nation; Lewis and Clark: On the Trail of Discovery; From Fields of Fire and Glory: Letters Home from the Civil War; Covered with Glory: The 26th North Carolina Infantry at Gettysburg, winner of the James I. Robertson Jr. Award; and The Illustrated Confederate Reader, winner of the Douglas Southall Freeman Award for History. A former journalist, he is an adjunct professor of history at Coastal Carolina University and lives with his family in Conway, South Carolina.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've seen on the two battles of Fort Fisher........2005-09-15

Gragg's book is very easy to read and is filled with great descriptions of the many participants. He describes why Wilmington was so vital to the survival of the Confederacy and why its capture was so important to the Union for a quicker end to the War.

Some of the most interesting characters of the Civil War participated in at least one of the battles. William lamb was 29 years old when he finished building the fort. Young Lamb had a keen interest in military history. As a young boy of twenty in the mid-1850s, Lamb became captivated by a farawy war that was then being waged between Russia, Great Britain, and France. Fisher's design and physical features drew praise from her Federal captors-and more than a few references were made to the Russian fortress of Malakoff (a defensive bastion at Sebastopol that had greatly influenced Lamb's efforts to strengthen Fort Fisher)that was built during that war.

The First Battle effectively ended the military career of Union General Bejamin Butler, a "Political General" who was a constant headache for both the Lincoln Administration and any Commander to whom he was a subordinate. The Failure to capture the Fort after a sucessful amphiboious landing was the final nail in his coffin and he did not receive another command during the war.

Is there a Confederate defeat outside of Gettysburg and Petersburg that does not have the hand of General Braxton Bragg somewhere behind it? Bragg was in command in Wilmington instead of being cashiered after Missionary Ridge mainly because he was friends with Jeff Davis. Bragg did not send reinforcements to the fort that would have cut off Banks' invaders.

Alfred Terry was in command of the second attempt to storm the fort in January 1865. One of the lesser known of Grant's favorite lieutenants, he is better known as the scapegoat of Custer's Last Stand.

Lt. William B. Cushing USN was a precursor of the Navy SEALS. He had many special forces operations during the war including the sinking of the CSS Albemarle with a mine and doing soundings in a rowboat off Fort Fisher while under fire.

Gragg's book was a page turner for me even though I knew the outcome beforehand and I would reccomend it to Civil War enthusiasts everywhere.

UPDATE: 02/14/2006. NC Educational Television ran a television adaptation of the Book last week featuring a recreation of the two invasions of Ft. Fisher. It really helped bring the book to life.

5 out of 5 stars "Such fighting was never seen before, I believe.".......2005-05-12

Fort Fisher, guardian of Wilington, North Carolina, was easily the strongest fort in the entire Confederacy, thanks to the engineering genius Col. William Lamb, who at age 26 was given command of the fort. He quickly determined to make it "a work of such magnitude that it could withstand the heaviest fire of any guns in the American navy." He came very close to succeeding, arming the fort with some of the heaviest cannon in existence, including a powerful 150-pounder Armstrong cannon. However, Col. Lamb was plagued by a serious lack of troops, and his superiour, Gen. Braxton Bragg, was an unreliable moron who refused to believe that Fort Fisher could be taken by any assault.

Of course, there were also infamous morons on the Union side, like Gen. Benjamin Butler, known as "Beast Butler" for his notorious policies during the Union occupation of New Orleans. It was Butler's fault that the first assault of Fort Fisher in late 1864 ended in a near disaster for the Union army, after which he was finally relieved of command. The second Union attack which would take place in Jan. 1865 was to be better planned and had far better officers in command (this time Gen. Terry was to be in overall command). Still, even after days of bombardment from the Union navy, the fort proved to be a tough obstacle for the 10,000+ attacking force, which included over 2,000 sailors and marines.

The sailors and marines attacked one side of Fort Fisher while the thousands of well-armed infantry attacked the other side of the fort. The sailors and marines were bloodily repulsed (one in every five was a casualty) while the infantry slowly fought their way into the fort. Col. Lamb had fewer than 2,000 men but he made the enemy pay dearly for every foot of ground they gained. Finally, six hours after the assault began, the fort finally fell. The Union dead were actually in piles (some estimate as many as 1,710 were killed or wounded in both battles at Fort Fisher) around the fort, and the Confederates also suffered heavy losses, with aprox. 600 killed or wounded during both battles.

Rod Gragg told the story of Fort Fisher in a gripping and entertaining way and he's one of my favorite authors. In fact, his book _The Illustrated Confederate Reader_ was one of my very first Civil War books, bought when I was 8 years old! This book has several great maps and two sections of photos, showing both the main Union and Confederate officers involved in the battle as well as photos of the fort itself. Captain Towle, one of (Union) General Terry's staff officers, perhaps summed up the battle best. "The fort never surrendered to anybody. It was taken by Gen. Terry by force of arms after a long and desperate resistance which did honor to both sides." This book is an absolute must for any Civil War buff!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Narrative About an Overlooked Battle!.......2003-01-26

As an avid Civil War reader, I have sometimes comes across titles that bore the reader and become unnecessarily bogged down in detail. Thankfully, Rod Gragg's gem is not one of them!

The author packs the title with descriptive actions of the 1st and 2nd Battles of Fort Fisher and interesting anecdotes of several of the major participants. Particularly interesting were the descriptions of William Lamb, William Whiting, Braxton Bragg, Admiral Porter, Alfred Terry, Benjamin Butler, and several colonels and other officers. Gragg is also careful to point out the heroic sacrifices of several noncommissioned officers, privates, and black troops who served in the battle.

Gragg's book is well-balanced: an interesting read without being simplistic. The only complaint I have are the few maps in the book - a few more would have made Gragg's book even more enjoyable.

All in all, an excellent read! As a North Carolinian, I'm glad to see excellent books on Civil War battles in our great state. Oftentimes when North Carolina is mentioned in Civil War history, the emphasis is on the large number of troops who sacrificed their lives and physical well-being during the conflict.

                                      Read it!

Civil War bufs rejoice! Rod Gragg is by far one of the greatest writers of Civil War history today. This book won the "Fletcher Pratt" Prize for Civil War history and is indeed very worthy. Gragg kept me glued with his marvelous account of the events surrounding the battle of Fort Fischer which took place near the end of the war. For me, Gragg does several things right: He writes in an easy to read elegant style and makes the history come alive with vivid descriptions. Best of all, Gragg reveals the stories behind the story. He deals with the motivations of all the participants, men from Admirals and Generals all the way down to the seamen and soldiers. The action flows and the suspense builds with every page as the battle takes form. Theres enough rich detail to please the most hardcore Civil War buf. This is a story of a almost now forgotten, but important battle, and Gragg has a done a great job in re-telling it.

                                            Book Description

On February 1, 2003, the unthinkable happened. The space shuttle Columbia disintegrated 37 miles above Texas, seven brave astronauts were killed and America's space program, always an eyeblink from disaster, suffered its second catastrophic in-flight failure. Unlike the Challenger disaster 17 years earlier, Columbia's destruction left the nation one failure away from the potential abandonment of human space exploration. Media coverage in the immediate aftermath focused on the possible cause of the disaster, and on the nation's grief. But the full human story, and the shocking details of NASA's crucial mistakes, have never been told -- until now.

Based on dozens of exclusive interviews, never-before-published documents and recordings of key meetings obtained by the authors, Comm Check takes the reader inside the conference rooms and offices where NASA's best and brightest managed the nation's multi-billion-dollar shuttle program -- and where they failed to recognize the signs of an impending disaster. It is the story of a space program pushed to the brink of failure by relentless political pressure, shrinking budgets and flawed decision making. The independent investigation into the disaster uncovered why Columbia broke apart in the sky above Texas. Comm Check brings that story to life with the human drama behind the tragedy.

Michael Cabbage and William Harwood, two of America's most respected space journalists, are veterans of all but a handful of NASA's 113 shuttle missions. Tapping a network of sources and bringing a combined three decades of experience to bear, the authors provide a rare glimpse into NASA's inner circles, chronicling the agency's most devastating failure and the challenges that face NASA as it struggles to return America to space.

A good, thorough analysis. It's unfortunate that the author(s) felt it unavoidable that they should fill the book with Christian propaganda. It really took away from the objectivity.

"Comm Check..." tells the story of the loss of the space shuttle Columbia. If you are expecting a top-level, academic analysis, like the one found in Diane Vaughan's "The Challenger Launch Decision", then this book is not for you. It is a well written book with lots of human interest anecdotes about the people and the organizations involved in the tragedy. It is factual and reasonably well organized but is written with a sense of drama that I found both distracting and unnecessary. At times, the continual stream of mini-biographies made it hard to follow the book's main theme. While interesting, I gained little from the litany of who went to which school and who had flown so-many thousands of hours in jet fighters. Even the the climactic chapter "Re-Entry Revisited" was light duty in terms of the technical information and overly dramatized events from the astronauts perspective.

If you are just starting to research events surrounding Columbia's loss or are simply interested in learning the whole story, this book is a good starting place. It provides the "big picture" in an easily understood fashion. However, it lacks the depth and comprehensive coverage that one would expect from a well done historical summary. Also, there is minimal analysis, of the events leading up to and following the loss of Columbia, beyond a superficial compilation of basic facts and the conclusions of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board. The few conclusions expressed by the authors are neither insightful nor motivating.

                                            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2005-04-11

Being a space nut, and being very impacted by the Columbia disaster, this book was exactly what I was looking for.

The writing style is smooth and segues between topics and people almost seamlessly. It covers the human side and also the technical nature of the issues that came together to create the accident that caused the loss of the shuttle and her crew.

By far the most emotional item for me was reading the detailed breakdown of what happened in the last 15 minutes of the mission. Hearing how the shuttle struggled as hard as it could to bring its crew home, and was just simply overcome by the stresses caused by the weakened left wing. I have read the entire CAIB report before and this book breaks down the final minutes of Columbia in a much more clear and to the point kind of way.

The book doesn't point blame but often infers blame on a few key managers in Nasa's space program and rightly so.

The shuttle program and history is very interesting to read about and this is a perfect addition to anyone's collection.

This book presents a thorough first analysis of the Columbia accident - Not nearly as thorough as Diane Vaughan's telling of the Challenger accident, but similar in scope and tone. Although these are journalists reporting on the accident, the book contains a good analysis and enough technical details to keep the engineer as well as the layperson interested. The book is insightful regarding risk management cultures at large organizations and is a worthwhile read for anyone managing risk in any industry.

5 out of 5 stars This book exceeded my expectations.......2004-07-26

I followed the Columbia accident very closely so I wasn't sure this book would have anything new for me, but I was surprised by its depth. The authors are veteran space journalists and were able to get interviews that no one else did. The retelling of how the critical information about the foam strike never got anywhere past a few bobbled opportunities to discuss how dangerous these foam strikes could be is fascinating. Many, many wrong turns were taken by people who thought the worst wouldn't happen, at least not during their hectic workday. A great book and the only book about the Columbia accident worth reading.
