Book Description

Bogue provides a systematic overview and introduction to Deleuze's writings on music and painting, and an assessment of their position within his aesthetics as a whole. Deleuze on Music, Painting and the Arts breaks new ground in the scholarship on Deleuze's aesthetics, while providing a clear and accessible guide to his often overlooked writings in the fields of music and painting.

5 out of 5 stars Sexy Intelligentsia.......2003-11-20

Deleuze's work is complex and often difficult, especially for the reader who comes with an interest in art, music, and literature but little familiarity with (or perhaps tolerance for) late-twentieth century philosophy.

In this study of Deleuze's writing on music and painting, Ronald Bogue distills the essence of the philosopher's decades-long interest in these disciplines. This is no "Deleuze for Dummies"--some familiarity with Deleuzian concepts is assumed and expected. As with similar texts (Harari's _How James Joyce Made His Name: A Reading of the Final Lacan_, for example, or Rochlitz's _The Disenchantment of Art: The Philosophy of Walter Benjamin_), _Deleuze on Music, Painting, and the Arts_ tells us probably as much about Bogue as it does about Deleuze.

This is useful, however, because Bogue has read widely and with comprehension not only in Deleuze but in the whole network of related subject matter touching on his concerns--Jacob von Uexkull, Susan Oyama, Paul Griffiths and Alois Riegl among others. Additionally, Bogue's consideration of Modern music is exemplary for its clear-sighted and vivid engagement with difficult (what Adorno might even call radical) music. Take as an example this brief segment from the discussion of Messiaen's spectacular _Catalogue d'oiseaux_: "...Messiaen never approaches an individual bird's song in isolation, but instead juxtaposes it with the songs of other species and situates it within an evocative sonic landscape....Such pictorialism might suggest that Messiaen's aesthetic is purely mimetic, but the actual results of his practice belie this suspicion." He goes on to discuss the piece's motivic development and the composer's modal style.

Deleuze is at his most brilliant in the writings on Messiaen and Francis Bacon, and Bogue's book allows easier access for readers without the necessary time or desire to wade through thousands of pages to find what they're looking for. Of course, the ideas about music and painting are inextricable from the other ideas in those pages (there are, after all, 'a thousand plateaus', and it is not impossible that the reader may feel the need to explore further to obtain a more complete understanding--which is, after all, not such a bad thing....)

At the beginning of the twenty-first century we could do worse than immerse ourselves in a study of Deleuze. For the student of music and art, as well as for those interested in expanding their knowledge of one of the great thinkers of that long, dark, and now late century, this is a valuable book.

George Carlin's been working the crowd since "the counterculture" became "the over-the-counter culture" around 1967 or so; his new book, Brain Droppings, surfs on three decades of touring-in-support. It's the purest version of book-as-candy that one could imagine, serving up humor in convenient, bite-sized packages. Snack on chewy one-liners like "A meltdown sounds like fun. Like some kind of cheese sandwich." Or: "If you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten." Brain Droppings also contains highlights from Carlin's concert repertoire, and that more than makes up for the occasional spray of pointless nihilism. Tell us, George, what exactly were you going for with "Kill your pet" and "Satan is cool"? Quick--hide the paper before Daddy sees it! Still, if you're a fan of this sarcastic semanticist who's given Bad Attitude not necessarily a good name, but at least a comfy bank account, by all means rush out and snag Brain Droppings. Carlin's book melts in your mind, not in your hand.

          Book Description

With nearly 20 albums, two Grammys, two Cable ACE awards, and more HBO specials sunder his belt than anyone else, George Carlin is more popular than ever. Now, for the first time, Carlin has prduced a book of original humor pieces, Brain Droppings. Filled with thoughts, musings, questions, lists, beliefs, curiousities, monologues, assertions, assumptions, and other verbal ordeals, Brian Droppings is infectiously funny. Also included are two timeless bonus items from the past, "A Place for Your Stuff" and "Baseball-Football."

Readers will get an inside look into Carlin's mind, and they won't be disappointed by what they find:

          * I buy stamps by mail. It works OK until I run out of stamps.
          * What year did Jesus Christ think it was?
          * A tree: first you chop it down, then you chop it up.
          * Have you ever noticed the lawyer is always smiling more than the client?
          * I put a dollar in one of those change machines. Nothing changed.
          * If you ever have chicken at lunch and chicken at dinner, do you ever wonder if the two chickens knew each other?

5 out of 5 stars Droppings from an Old F#%!.......2007-03-28

"Brain Droppings" is just that - a varied collection of jokes, opinions, observations, questions, etc... George Carlin, who seems much less controversial in this day and age, is not only funny, but highly intellectual. His tirades about the misuse of language and the trends in our society are hilarious and spot-on accurate.

This is a book best enjoyed a piece at a time in order to appreciate all that Carlin has to say. Nothing and no one is spared by Carlin's acid tongue as he bashes such idiotic movements as political correctness and lambasts the obsessions that imprison us. George Carlin is a breath of fresh air and it is refreshing to know that there still exist comics who can make people laugh through their wit and not through dropping their drawers.

i recommend this book, it is entertaining and easy to read (and of course, very funny). but i think Napalm & Silly Putty was probably funnier. it's only one cent (used), so you might as well buy it.

Very funny book at times a little crass, but if you know George you'd understand. Still great as far as I'm concerned.

A mighty fine read. The first Carlin book I've read, having been introduced to him via the joys of VHS video. He's not well-known in Australia, but he should be. I am now hanging out to complete the Carlin Collection...

I have been a Carlin fan since the hippy dippy weatherman days. The fact that he tells you up front that "I will read to you but you'll have to get someone else to understand it for you" is just the best. If you can't laugh at yourself don't listen to this CD. His wit and perspectives are not for the faint of heart or the tight of ass. I met Mr. Carlin several years ago going into a Ruby Tuesday resturant on the beach in Biloxi. He graciously gave me fifteen minutes of his time and was tremendously kind to listen to me rant about how much his humor has meant to me over the years. I love his body of work and I loved these three books on CD. A big thumbs up or at least one those fingers way up!

4 out of 5 stars AS PROFOUND AND PROFANE AS EVER.......2004-12-18

Stand-up comedian George Carlin (he of the oblique life commentary and not-for-tender-ears vocabulary) has penned three books ("Brain Droppings", "Napalm & Silly Putty", and "More Napalm & Silly Putty".) Each is rife with his wry, absurdist comments and musings about the world around him. Now, bits and bitters from this trio of laughs is gathered into 7.5 hours of hilarity read, of course, by the man himself.

Although Carlin has been doing his schtick for almost fifty years there's no evidence of age about him. His delivery is as on target as ever and, truly, it's in the delivery that Carlin excels, whether he's observing the popularity of names, noting that nursing homes will one day be populated by Debbies and Tiffanys or doing his vaunted riff on oxymorons - death benefits, close proximity, etc. One cannot fathom how his brain operates as apparently unrelated thoughts come rolling forth leaving listeners guffawing and nodding their heads.

His voice may be a bit raspier but his timing is to the nano second. Listen and laugh.

In the Newmarket Shooting Script® format, the new movie directed by Ron Howard (Ransom, Apollo 13) starring Russell Crowe about the life of Nobel Prize winner John Forbes Nash Jr., a mathematical genius diagnosed with paranoid-schizophrenia—a Universal and DreamWorks co-production, coming in December 2001. From the heights of notoriety to the depths of depravity, John Forbes Nash, Jr. (Russell Crowe) experienced it all. A mathematical genius, he made an astonishing discovery early in his career and stood on the brink of international acclaim. But the handsome and arrogant Nash soon found himself on a painful and harrowing journey of self-discovery. After many years of struggle, he eventually triumphed over this tragedy, and late in life received the Nobel Prize for his work in game theory. The film is based in part on the biography by Sylvia Nasar. The Newmarket book includes the complete shooting script, an introduction by Ron Howard especially for this edition, 10 b/w stills, production notes, and the complete credits.

5 out of 5 stars My Heart is Still Bleeding.......2004-06-01

It was very painful for me too keep reading this document until the very end. Someone who I love with all my soul apprised the moral value of the end movie and I had to see it for myself. The fact of the matter is this is a true story. Here we have a man who has a dream and who is so persistent to see it realized that he fails to see the many great blessings God has brought to him. You see, God is more persistent. Whether Nash realizes it or not no one is excluded from imperfection and it still doesn't matter because God loves us all the same and he gave us that capability as well. The great lesson I see is love yourself and those around you and you'll want to see tomorrow. Oh, and, don't forget to count your blessings.

                      5 out of 5 stars Goldsman's Work.......2002-05-05

I tend to admire the work that goes into forging a screen adaptation from a book. In this case Goldsman has created a truly compelling script which, as we all know, won the academy award. Worth reading? (in addition to seeing the movie?) Yes. Because you will see so much more. The movie is the product; this is the raw material that gets worked. You'll gather what was specified and what was originated by the actors, how much the scenes were designed and envisioned beyond just the words. In a way it is thrilling to read a screenplay, enabling you to go behind the polished fantasy of film, back to ideas and possibilities.Another discovery is the screenplay's direct or economical way of conveying such complex emotions as those of Nash and Alicia in very few words, and with these words the actors generate their own filmic magic. It is a treat to have the script in hand like this.

I attended Juilliard for one year and all I can say about this book is that every word is true. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it as a primer for any young person contemplating auditioning for Juilliard. It is not a place for the faint hearted.

This is the only (good) book that I know of on casino (i.e. non-poker) tournament strategy. If you thoroughly study and apply the knowledge in this book to Craps, Blackjack, and Baccarat tournaments, you will do well. If you are the only tournament player who has read this book, you will have a hugh advantage over the rest of the field! Anything that Wong writes is worth reading, and this book is no exception. Not only is this the best book in the category, it is the only one!

4 out of 5 stars Good Tournament Times.......2000-07-17

This book is crucial for any who want to participate in casino tournaments. Generally, in these tournaments you are not playing against the casino, but against other players. Since this is very different than normal play, it is very different. This book gives you a much greater advantage than the other players with whom you are competing. With thousands and thousands of dollars available in prize money, the cost of this book is insignificant in comparison to the gains it can potentially earn you.

Veteran newsman and Meet the Press moderator Tim Russert is known for his direct and unpretentious style and in this charming memoir he explains why. Russert's father is profiled as a plainspoken World War II veteran who worked two blue-collar jobs while raising four kids in South Buffalo but the elder Russert's lessons on how to live an honest, disciplined, and ethical life are shown to be universal. Big Russ and Me, a sort of Greatest Generation meets Tuesdays with Morrie, could easily have become a sentimental pile of mush with a son wistfully recalling the wisdom of his beloved dad. But both Russerts are far too down-to-earth to let that happen and the emotional content of the book is made more direct, accessible, and palatable because of it. The relationship between father and son, contrary to what one would think of as essential to a riveting memoir, seems completely healthy and positive as Tim, the academically gifted kid and later the esteemed TV star and political operative relies on his old man, a career sanitation worker and newspaper truck driver, for advice. Big Russ and Me also traces Russert's life from working-class kid to one of broadcast journalism's top interviewers by introducing various influential figures who guided him along the way, including Jesuit teachers, nuns, his dad's drinking buddies, and, most notably, the late New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, whom Russert helped get elected in 1976. Plenty of entertaining anecdotes are served up along the way from schoolyard pranks to an attempt to book Pope John Paul II on the Today Show. Though not likely to revolutionize modern thought, Big Russ and Me will provide fathers and sons a chance to reflect on lessons learned between generations. --Charlie Williams

3 out of 5 stars The Father with the One-Liners .......2007-06-29

Imagine going through your life and professional career leaning on your father's one-liners. Tim Russert describes his life and around every corner he calls his father. His father undoubtedly picks up the phone and throws out one of his famous one-liners. Russert uses that one-liner on TV the next day to boost his career. There are good thoughts in this book about teachings that every child should learn. I liked Russert's thoughts on teachers and how children have lost respect for them. Yet, I am sure that is what every generation has thought about their children compared to their own childhood. I wouldn't expect anything deep and provide from this book, unless you are looking for a couple of good one-liners.

Mr. Don Imus helped you promote this book and was a great friend of yours. Where were you in Imus' hour of need? I am extremely disappointed.

As a result of the way you handled that situation, I will no longer be buying any of your books nor will I watch you on television, and that includes your show.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Great Father & Son Story.......2007-05-04

I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down. I loved how Russert interwove the antecdotes his father taught him throughout his life and made them relevant to the decisions and actions he has displayed through his youth and into adulthood. Russert understood growing up in Buffalo that his father was a hard-working man who might not have been able to spend a lot of time with him, but made the time they did spend together valuable. It was so typical of the times and Russert understood that and took that work ehtic with him into as a grown man.

They have a very special relationship and it shows now in the relationship Russert has with his own son. I love the stories about Tim working for the Buffalo Sanitation department all the way up to his meetings with the Pope. I was sad when this book ended because I wanted to hear more of his wonderful stories between him and his father and some of his NBC stories.

Russian Tanks 1900-1970 is not just another book listing tanks and armoured vehicles. The first chapter of the book starts with concepts that Russia was trying to develop before Revolution. The next six chapters deal with the formation of the tank industry, how real warfare forced the tanks to evolve to meet realistic needs, and tanks of the Nuclear Age.
The second part of the book is made up of five chapters that DO list and give details about Light Tanks, Heavy Tanks, Self-Propelled Weapons and so on.
The first part of the book is the best part. Watching how tanks, based totally on theory and simple ideas, were replaced by new and more effective tanks as the conflicts with Finland and Germany forced the Russians to rethink their designs is pure delight.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but dated.......2003-04-10

Comprehensive coverage of Russian AFV's from 1917 to 1970, including armoured cars, apcs, spgs, half-tracks, rocket launchers, etc. based on information available in 1970 - more recent publications have been able to access additional ex-soviet resources.
Part I covers the mechanization of the Russian Army, with chapters on pre-revolutionary concepts, foundation of the soviet tank industry, the first and second five year plans, armoured warfare in practice (Manchuria, Finland and the purges), the great patriotic war, and armour in the nuclear age. Part II covers the vehicles themselves, with chapters on light tanks, medium tanks, heavy tanks, self-propelled weapons, and wheeled (armoured) and tracked supporting vehicles. There are supporting data tables, maps, notes, references and a bibliography.
Most vehicles are illustrated, all b&w, some heavily retouched and poorer quality. There are some errors, eg late-war and post-war T34-85's seem to be mixed up, some T34 models seem to be mislabelled, and the KV2 experimental 85mm picture is of an experimental KV2 with 107mm F39 gun per Zaloga.
Overall still a great single volume reference - updated with more recently available information and pictures it would be worth 5 stars.

                                          Product Description

Over the past four decades, the share of income devoted to health care in the United States has nearly tripled. If current policy remains unchanged, this worrisome trend is likely to continue. Should Americans decide to rein in the growth of health care spending, on the other hand, they will be forced to consider whether to ration care for the well insured--a prospect that is odious and unthinkable to many. In Can We Say No?, Henry Aaron and William B. Schwartz argue that sensible health care rationing not only can save money, but that it can improve general welfare and public health, as well. The book reviews Great Britain’s experience with health care rationing. The choices the British have made point up the nature of the options Americans will face if they wish to prevent public health care budgets from driving taxes even higher and private health care spending from crowding out increases in other forms of worker compensation and consumption. Aaron and Schwartz, along with Melissa Cox, explain why serious consideration of health care rationing is advisable, even inescapable. Can We Say No? provides the information policymakers and concerned citizens need to think clearly about these difficult issues, engage in an informed debate, and formulate responsible, sustainable health care policies.

5 out of 5 stars Health care rationing........2006-03-12

Excellent analysis of the health care mess. However, like almost all other such books, it stops short of a solution. For a thought provoking formulation of a solution that provides better health care at lower cost by clearly defining what the health care system is supposed to be accompishing, and squeezing the fat out of the system, see "You Bet Your Life: The Zero Sum Health Care Game", available at hesresearch@yahoo.com.

4 out of 5 stars Flawed in the longer run.......2006-01-24

I just heard one of the authors interviewed on NPR. Henry Aaron states in the opening that if health care costs continue to rise, they will move from 16% of the GDP in 2005 to over 33% by around 2030. He includes the caveat "that is a big if" yet the entire discussion assumes this is really inevitable.

Yet when one consider that technology is accelerating as pointed out by engineers Bill Joy, Ray Kurzweil, and others, medical technology will significantly transform health care over the next 25 years. Rather than costs increasing as a percentage of GDP, it is perfectly realistic to assume costs will instead decrease over the longer run.

We saw this trend with computers where Americans spent more and more per GDP on computers as computers and more software became available to more people. Yet at some point this trend began to reverse as computers became much cheaper even as they became far more powerful.

We will see health care costs *decrease* over time and the driving force - accelerating technology - should not be dismissed. The book makes sense over the shorter run and should be read with that timeframe in mind.

This is a topic that should get more attention than it does. Increased rationing of health care is coming, no matter how much we want to wish it away. Aaron and Schwartz deserve credit adding to the, so far limited, discussion on the topic.

The book is largely a comparison of the provision of certain services in the United States and Britain. The British National Health Service was established after World War II and it generally holds down costs by establishing global budgets and requiring providers to operate within them. This method is likened to managed care by some. The British system has much lower use of services such as dialysis and fewer intensive care beds, even after adjusting for population differences. Given lower capacity in some areas, the British have to been much choosier about who receives care in these areas.

The British system of rationing was largely unregulated, in the sense there was not often a uniform criteria for choosing one patient over another. Rather providers were obliged to simply make do within their budgets and this helped create a "culture" of care provision that differs from the culture in the United States. Beginning in the 1980s, technological advancements and increased expenditures in some of the most heavily rationed areas, such as dialysis, greatly increased the capacity to provide care although rates of treatment are still far lower than in the U.S.

The authors suggest it might be wise for the U.S. to copy some aspects of the British system to help hold down costs. However, they acknowledge there are some significant differences, such as an American legal system that gives deference to demands for care.
