The whole point of a monastic existence is to put aside worldly things. More than a parody.......2007-02-06

Anyone who's read Christopher Buckley's collection of essays, Wry Martinis, might expect his novels to exhibit a similar degree of hilarity. Buckley's essays often take the form of parodic fictionalizations such as memos, journals, and letters, and occasionally fictional personal anecdotes that serve to prove his larger points (Art Buchwald often employed the same technique). God Is My Broker meets, and exceeds, this expectation, being a book-length expansion of the concept that also gains something in the expansion.

This is, in part, a parody of the crop of self-help books that has sprung up over the last few decades, as typified by the works of Deepak Chopra (whom the authors confront directly in the novel, including excerpts of Chopra's work, complete with page numbers for reference). But it's important to emphasize that God Is My Broker is a great deal more than that; anybody could mimic the format and style of Chopra's (or some other guru's) works, and produce something that's funny...for a while. But who would want to read a book-length Chopra parody? All the laughs would be wrung out of it in the first few pages (and frankly, most of the joke could probably be gleaned from the table of contents). The "7 1/2 Laws of Spiritual and Financial Growth" of the book's title are interspersed throughout a legitimate story of a New York monastery and the monks who make its ill-tasting and unprofitable wine. Brother Ty, the ostensible "author" of this Buckley-and-Tierney-"edited" book, is a quite likeable, fully-realized character whom we follow through his skewering of Chopra's platitudes (which have become a new fad at the financially-struggling monastery) and his exploration of the Bible as a dispensary of financial advice.

I imagine this was probably shelved in the humor section of bookstores, and though it is a parody, it's labeled, quite justly, as fiction, and hilarious fiction it is. Store placement doesn't matter now, of course, since it's out of print as of this writing. Rumor has it that this has been shopped around as a potential film. I can't imagine it translating to the screen as well as Buckley's Thank You For Smoking did, but such a venture would at least get the book back in stores. In the meantime, if you see a copy, grab it. Come for the parody, stay for the plot.

A Classic From America's Foremost Satirist.......2004-11-10

Christopher Buckley's brilliant satire of get rich quick books and self help muck that might strike a bit too close to home, mocking catholicisms wanning prevelance in society and its eagerness to catch up with modern culture as well as the books themselves. Some might think it as obvious, and thus chastise it for being superficial. I like to think that it's blunt, and a little more truthfull to a somewhat touchy public making it less popular, as is common for true satires to be. Critics sometimes want satires to be subtle and vague, but Buckley once again presents his readers with the obvious hilarity rather than the mundane and snobbish.

If you're at this site, then chances are you're sort of sick of business books. Probably, that's a kind way of saying it. Seeing another book by Stephen Covey or some other idiot spouting out laws, truths, and platitudes in big print, wide-margined, brightly colored business books inscribed with fulsome praise from every other author of big print, wide-margined, brightly colored business books probably makes you ill like you just ate something slimy that fell out of the nostril of a leprous hippopotamus.

Or else it makes you so angry that the rest of the business world (that is to say, all those bleating sheep that come up with words like "consens" and "mute points") expects you to converse in this stuff that you have to read it and be able to remember authors when you could be using your time more wisely like beating your head over and over and over again with bowling pin.

If that's the case, this is the book for you.

Buckley and Tierney have written the book that everyone who ever wanted to scream in despair and fury at The Oz Principle can worship. It is an excoriation of all the senseless business books that infect our lives.

It is the story of a group of monks who begin to become wealthy by pure happenstance (or perhaps through miracles) and find themselves suddenly regarded as business men. So, to run their business they hire marketing people, public relations people, and all begin to read books by Deepak Chopra and the like.

The result, as you might imagine, is not a very sound fiscal enterprise.

The wit is sharp and biting. It is required reading for anyone who ever read one of the 7 habits and thought that their life was changed.

It's an amazingly fresh example of why acumen, expertise, and intelligence can never be truly replaced.

It teaches the businessman to ignore the bleating of sheep.

Help yourself.......2004-04-28

I guess I'm firmly in the growing Christopher Buckley fan base, and so I'm not sure how objective I am when I write a review of one of his books. Suffice it to say that this one -- written with collaborator John Tierney-- has the same crisp writing, the same kinds of unusual story lines and plot twists, the same kinds of colorful characters that made Mr. Buckley's other novels wonderful examples of worthwhile light reading.

In this story, a failed investment banker becomes a monk and in the incarnation of Brother Ty, he somehow becomes a catalyst in the ethically flawed rebirth of the monastery's wine. The story is a satire that takes aim at self-help books, but as someone raised Catholic (and practically living in the shadow of the Vatican), a former financial journalist, and a wine lover ... well, a story line that among other things takes aim at the Holy See, Wall Street, and Napa Valley hit close to home in too many ways for me not to love it.

I have been enjoying NY Times Sunday Crosswords for years edited by others. But these, edited by Will Shortz, I find loaded with rarely if never used words. I have had two years of college, one at U of C at Berkeley, majoring in English and Literature. I love the English language as well as other languages and how they relate to each other.

These puzzles are not fun because the words are not fair.

But the puzzles remain nonpareil.......2003-08-07

Noting the other review, I do agree somewhat with the "materials and construction" complaint, but these delightful Sunday treats remain wonderfully literate, urbane, witty challenges. Now that the AMA has noted the therapeutic value of crosswords at warding off various age-related cognitive difficulties, I say bring on more and better puzzle anthologies for the masses!

This version and all NY times Crossword Books published by
ST MARTIN'S GRIFFIN are poorly done copies of books earlier done by RANDOM HOUSE. These books are cheaper but the quality is much poorer. The Type face is not as bold and paper quality is poor (pages tear easily with erasures). Also the title of each puzzle is lacking making solving extremely difficult where duoble letter squares are used or the spelling of answers is related to the title clue.

Babylonians invented it, Indians worshipped it, Greeks abhorred it. Zero has been a problematic number for a long time. European mathematicians followed Greek footsteps, until they finally realized how important thing zero was for advanced mathematics.

Seife presents us the history of zero and its sister concept infinity, not only in mathematics, but also in physics and quantum mechanics. Zero is an entertaining book, if a bit light. For quick popular science entertainment purposes it's a good choice. (Review based on the Finnish translation.)

A facinating read.......2007-06-05

The first part of this book walks through all the history and philosophy of the concept of zero (and infinity) of the past few thousand years, explaining who did what, when, where, and most importantly, why. The later chapters are devoted to delving in to the more technical aspects of zero (and infinity).

The history is simple, not dry, and a suitable read for anyone. The later chapters require some math background. Although the author explains a lot of the math, you appreciate it better if you have a higher than normal math education.

"Zero" falls into a very narrow category of books that can be considered a work of art. From the cover, to the interesting last name of the author (near to that of Cypher), to the chapter titles to the way that each consecutive chapter integrates with their predecessors. Do not be fooled by the deceptive size of this book, as the thoughts it inspires may fill the notebooks and empty the ink from pens you keep nearby.

The book centers on the twins--Zero and Infinity. These two heretics are abhorred by nature, yet have been sirens to many of the greatest minds this world has ever known. Our story begins with the chapter "Null and Void," when the implosive power of Zero disables the USS Yorktown. Once the book has opened with such a display of power, it immediately travels backwards in time to when mortals first discovered these two forces, then follows a trail of those lunatics and bodies that dared seek the twins.

Even the non-numerically oriented should find inspiration and insight buried between the lines and diagrams of this book. The admixture of mathematics, physics and philosophy--even alchemy--leaves open this book's audience to varied membership.

Very enlightening, I couldn't put it down. People who love numbers will enjoy the numerical calculations. The ones who don't will easily understand. And when you finish reading it you will feel like you actually have learned something from it. Zero is not just another book!
It should be required reading in schools.

"The Wisdom of Eleanor Roosevelt" by Donald Wigal, PhD was my book club's selection for this past month. I was excited to learn more about Eleanor Roosevelt's life. I had no background info on her before I bought the book. Once I received this "biography", I found that nearly half of the book contains nothing but QUOTES from her. Another large portion of the book are her "My Day" syndicated columns. At the end of the book is her obituary.

Being someone who did not have any background knowledge of Mrs. Roosevelt, I was SORELY disappointed with this book. Others in my book club felt the same way as well.

In my opinion, the only way this book offers any value is as a SUPPLEMENT to a Real biography of Eleanor Roosevelt.

A First Ladies' Pearls.......2003-09-10

The wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the mother of six children, Eleanor Roosevelt traveled widely, wrote a daily newspaper coloumn, had her own radio show and was an indefatigable worker for a wide range of social causes. It hardly seems credible that it took more than half a century for a book of this type to be written and published. The Wisdom of Eleanor Roosevelt is filled with the First Ladies' pithy comments and
and useful advice. From start to finish, it's a rewarding read.

Her insights in a chronological order. Sounds boring, right? Not the case at all. The editor, Don Wigal, has done a masterful job of bringing this woman to life once more (are you listening, Hilary?) in a wonderful and flowing way.

For those who might not remember the era, Don paints a large backdrop for you so that everyone can appreciate the timely, and in many instances timeless, insights and the very, very forward thinking of this woman.

There are any number of books 'out there' that quote others. This one is different because it touches in such a special way. I cannot, for the life of me, imagine anyone who would close this book and not be touched and changed.

How much do I appreciate this work? I have moved from my first copy to nine additional ones to share with others. And now my wife is composing a list of others with whom this needs to be shared.

GREAT GIFT, GREAT PRICE! None of us will live to fully realize all 30 Articles in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but hopefully the next generation will. The books are beautifully bound, and are printed in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian and Arabic, so they are great gifts for travel abroad. I met Mrs. Roosevelt as a child, and was very struck by her profound humanity and compassion. This Declaration is her greatest legacy to the future of mankind. Highly recommend.

A Must for Any Middle or High School Classroom.......2005-08-06

This book provides a great DBQ for social studies. It is also a moving and important document that has relevance today. Our greatest First Lady wrote this document and was instrumental in developing the United Nations. I was glad that I picked it up at the FDR Presidential Library and will use it in my teaching.
