This book contains a treasure of very atmospheric and detailed scenes. Doré's masterly use of superwide pespectives is an open invitation to explore his detailed and scetched people, landscapes, castles, heroes, battlefields and romantic situations. The illustration settings cover an area as huge as old europe with an ocassional touch of Asia. A particular delight are the morphed human-animal creatures. This book is great for just diving in and imagining yourself in these bizarre environments. enjoy !

This very small sized book (smaller than I had thought), was a funny read once but that's about it. Maybe I'll pick it up again in 2 years and find it amusing again. Great tiny coffee-table-type book to amuse guests that come by, but I wish I hadn't spent the money on it.

Way too funny........2007-09-11

It's hard to describe, because it's just so funny, and explaining it would ruin the joke. Basically, this book has the funniest, cutest, and most bizarre examples of poorly chosen or poorly translated English phrases that work their way onto shirts, bags, hats and jackets in eastern Asia (particularly Japan). Imagine someone randomly opening any old encyclopedia, or watching some random documentary, choosing a phrase of the correct length, and putting it on a shirt, and you will probably see what The Joys Of Engrish really are.

If you've been to Japan and are missing it, this is the book for you!

A fun read!.......2007-08-23

This will keep you entertained for an hour or two. I laughed out loud at several of these and even enjoyed sharing this book with friends. Well worth the time!

Good Intro to The Genre of Misinterpretation of Translations.......2007-06-15

Steven Caires Creator of website Enrish dot com, has put together a collection of photographs of Japanese signage with either deliberate or mistaken Japanese into English translations. Whilst not the best collection of funny translations out there The Joys of Engrish especially for those who have never travelled (or have not got hundreds of these sort of things from their friends as e-mail attachments) will be a good introduction and probably motivate to find the better stuff out there.
Many international business or international marketing books out there are full of chapters of these funny advertising campaigns, as well as stories (no stories in this book) of hilarious moments through misinterpretation. The Joys of Engrish is a good introduction to this genre but nothing special.

Lost in Translation.......2007-05-23

"Joys of Engrish" features a lot of mispellings and mistranslations of things into English from China and Japan, on packets, on street signs and on t-shirts, which are rather funny. Some of them are quite bizarre, and I did laugh out loud more than once while reading it. It's all photographs, and is a fairly quick read. Worth a look for fans of languages.

Excellent for fans of the movie.......2005-05-12

I have been playing for three or four years and found most of the music, with the exception of the "Chamber of Secrets" theme, which has many accidentals, very easy to sight-read. The music is easily recognized as that from the movie in most cases - I'm not so sure how many could recognize "Moaning Myrtle" - and makes an excellent accompaniement for the soundtrack of the second Harry Potter movie. Not recommended for those who can play by ear well.

Wow!!! Not for beginners!!.......2004-01-03

I have been playing violin for quite a while and just bought this book. There is a version that comes with a cd which is very helpful. Their are note in 3rd, 4th and 5th position but they are transposed down for those who can't play them. The most recognizable themes are there (harry's wonderful world and hedwig's theme) and a few that are hard to recongnize, such as dobby's theme (this is why the cd is so good). Since their are not that many copies on amazon.com, be sure to check out your local music store. Mine had a book for every instrament and also came with paino accompaniment!!

Some Great Ideas!.......2006-11-11

This is a wonderful book! It is very Bible-book based, which is great, but it also has some other games based on other Biblical and Christian topics. I wish there were a few other options, as we are currently studying things about Jesus and who He was... but for a Sunday School class, this would be a wonderful help! It's also a nice basis to go from to create your own ideas!

Through the largely untold history of US-based direct broadcast satellite (DBS) developments, this book assesses contemporary transformations in the international political economy. As the country whose hegemonic fortunes are most dependable in the full application of transnational communication technologies, the United States is shown to have acted as a complex mediator of significant contemporary international reforms including recently signed free trade agreements on services and intellectual property rights. Among his conclusions, the author shows the United States and other nation-states to be the ultimate arbiters of their ongoing histories. This book should be a part of every Christian's library. I had heard Elizabeth Elliot talk on the radio and had known the story of "the five missionaries" but reading the book gave me great insight to the lives of these families- devoted to ministering to the unsaved. They gave definition to 'the purpose driven life!'

Very Inspirational and Encouraging.......2006-12-08

This book really makes one question: How much do I truly trust the Lord? What would I be willing to give up should I be called to it? Would I be willing to sacrifice the basic comforts I know and depend on? Would I be willing to sacrifice my life with forethought decision? Even harder for me to think of than the sacrifice of my own life, would I be willing to sacrifice that of my husband, packing him up for a trip not knowing if I would ever see him again on this side of heaven?

Elisabeth Elliot does a fantastic job of giving an account of the families' journeys to and in the mission field by using the journals and letters of some of the men and women. The men's and women's excitement at God's faithful attentiveness to their prayers is stirring, and their spiritual struggles are also encouraging. I give a lot of credit to Elisabeth Elliot for that. She doesn't fluff up the missionaries as uber-Christians. She shows through their struggles and lives that they have the same power as you and I, and that power is the blood of Jesus Christ.

Even if you are not a Christian, this book may shed some light on both tribal culture and missionary culture. Whatever you believe, this is still a powerful tale of sacrifice, struggle, hope, and forgiveness. It is also still well written and well organized with multiple story lines forging into one giant one. Elliot knows how to pull you into the story. If for no other reason, this book is an interesting read because it shows the developing stages that led to the historical event that captured the compassion of the world - Christian and non-Christian alike.

This particular version has updates to the story as well, which is a definite plus. I hope you are blessed by this book.

A Must Read for the Missions Minded.......2006-09-15

Through Gates of Splendor is a gripping account of the true story of 5 missionaries martyred in the jungles of Ecuador. Sound familiar? That's because it's the same (basically) story recently popularized by the film End of the Spear.

If you watched the movie and the story moved you, you'll love this book. It gives the backdrop of the story; what brought these 5 men to that beach to give their lives for the cause of Christ.

The author was wife to Jim Elliot, one of the 5 men who lost his life. She quotes often from Jim's writings and diaries. Man, that guy could write!

My favorite of Jim Elliot's quotes comes from his diary, reflecting upon trying to serve God in the U.S.:

"The problem of meeting a culture with truth from God is the most difficult kind of thing. Once comes as a renovator, a conditioner of society, and society is in no mood to be conditioned. The fixedness of the human mind is the 'wall of Jericho' to Gospel preaching. God must shake, or there will be no shaking." (p. 20)

It's high time God shook things up...and it's high time we stop getting in the way.

The book is an inspiring source of faith, hope, and sacrifice. God's glory has certainly shone through the tragedy. The blood shed that day has certainly been a seed planted, watered, and cared for to a miraculous fruition of God's love and peace among indigenous tribes.

Read it! You'll be better for it. . .

While Howard Hughes's huge and unwieldy Spruce Goose never made it into World War II, the Radio Department he started grew to become the electronics giant Hughes Aircraft Company. By the 1950s, Hughes Aircraft built airborne radar and missiles for all of the Air Force interceptors stationed on the East and West Coasts and along the border with Canada to defend the United States from Soviet bombers. In the years that followed, the company built airborne radar for the Navy F-14A Tomcat, the Air Force F-15A Eagle, the Navy F-18A Hornet and the B-2 stealth bomber. They also built the Navy air-to-air AIM-54 Phenix and the Air Force air-to-ground AGM-65 Maverick missiles. These advanced electronic weapons were developed and fielded during President Reagan's massive buildup of military might. Even though Hughes himself did not live to see the Berlin Wall fall in 1989, the company he built made an essential contribution to the collapse of communism.

Fun Reading About A Dangerous Business.......2006-11-03

A great story about the testing of missles and the intergration of these missiles with the fighter aircraft of the era. George Marrett's style of writing makes for easy reading. He takes a highly technical subject and puts it into interesting narration for the layman to understand and enjoy.

A true masterpiece for anyone who wants to be a subject matter expert in the area of understanding the new trends as to how al-qaeda has established it's foot in europe. This book also illustrates how al-qaeda will go to great lengths to further its reign of so call crusade against not only America but also Europe. I found it an essential document toward the understanding of the dangers that we in the US face because of the denial rampant in Western European leaders and their disgust with Western culture and civilization. If I were to present an underlying theme of my own about Western Europe, it would be: Western European leaders are trying not to offend the people who have come to kill them. Liberals are Liberals wherever they live and lead. Our Liberals here will have the same reaction to al-Qaeda here--if they changed their name and called themselves something else, like "The Religion of Peace."

from the very start. Vidino gives an overview of who's who behind the
terrorist networks--great for the layman!--then addresses the specifics of
how each group finds recruits, finds financing and finds havens. I find
him masterful at weaving everything together, including how political,
social and legal issues in Europe bear upon the existence of radical groups
there. A fascinating analysis...but disturbing."

A Must Read.......2005-11-21

Amazingly well written. I bought it Friday morning and spent the weekend home reading and re-reading it, could not put it down. Rich with facts and information, yet it flows marvellously. I was fascinated by the transcripts of conversations among European al Qaeda operatives as intercepted by intelligence agencies. They give a unique insight into the minds of terrorists, something I have rarely seen elsewhere. A must-read for anybody interested in terrorism and current affairs!

Everything except the Falconry itself........2004-09-16

I wanted this book because I had learned so much (though not all I needed to know) from this same author's book "Understanding Owls." Whilst taking on board the author's preference for Birds of Prey other than owls, I have, nevertheless, proceeded to the stage where my own European Eagle Owl is flying free and ready for the next stage where he would (hopefully) be taught to take a rabbit.

It was, therefore, with great excitement that this book - which is, after all, entitled "Falconry," arrived through my letterbox. In no time at all I had read the book and was immediately frustrated because there is neither any detailed description of a lure nor mention of how to get any bird to take one - except that the author professes to make the best rabbit lures after having enjoyed three G&Ts. Well, I have the gin, I have the tonic and plenty of wild rabbits - but still no decent lure or even an inkling of how to introduce the subject to my bird.

All that said, this is an otherwise excellent book for the beginner. It covers most types of bird used in Falconry, the building of aviaries, breeding, medicine, injured wild birds, incubation, brooding, and conservation. Under the general heading "Making a Start," we also have such subjects as; The pen/weathering ground (and how to build them), paths, security, hygiene, the shed, equipment (including a chapter on lures - but, as I said, no description of one!), bags, gloves, blocks, perches, baths food, vets, imprinting and transportation.

If, therefore, you are seriously thinking about taking up Falconry, I would seriously recommend you read this book before purchasing a bird. There is much for the potential Falconer to consider and this book covers those topics is reasonable detail.

Having done that, and you still want to train a bird to fly first to your hand in captive conditions, then to fly free (a most exciting and rewarding experience) and then to hunt, you will need to purchase another book. When I find that book I will undoubtedly put it to the test.
