Book Description
Allan Kaprow's "happenings" and "environments" were the precursors to contemporary performance art, and his essays are some of the most thoughtful, provocative, and influential of his generation. His sustained inquiry into the paradoxical relationship of art to life and into the nature of meaning itself is brought into focus in this newly expanded collection of his most significant writings. A new preface and two new additional essays published in the 1990s bring this valuable collection up to date.

introduction to the mind of Kaprow and his view of art.......1998-05-18
It took me 30 years to come back to this subject, which was the logical conclusion to where art was and still is heading. His reactions are still fresh and current. He will always amaze me.

Book Description
In this work, Eve Borsook--best known for her extensive work on fresco and mural painting--examines in detail the three great cycles of mosaic, focusing particularly on their arrangement and liturgical, even political significance. Produced within a sixty year span, the Norman royal mosaics
form an unusually unanimous statement of the monarchy's view of itself, demonstrating the powerful way art, politics, theology, and ceremony merge.
Book Description
Sweet ass! A 200ish-page book about pot and pot-related stuff. Can you believe somebody paid these guys to publish a whole book about The Chronic? Man, that is so sick! The Marijuana-Logues started as an Off-Broadway show, consisting of these three guys, Arj Barker, Doug Benson, and Tony Camin sitting on stools and elucidating and illustrating the wisdom of weed. Since you probably never got motivated enough to actually go see the show, now is your chance to enjoy such gems as, “Some people say marijuana is a crutch—yeah, crutches help people walk. We think that’s a good thing.” In this sturdy volume (not made from hemp paper, so don’t try to smoke it), you’ll find many highly creative essays on the virtues of that fine fine plant, as well as some herben poetry, “high-ku,” marijuana fun facts, marijuana fun snacks, and other up-here stuff [point to your head].
Some choice buds from The Marijuana-Logues:
ARJ BARKER’S FIRST TIME
The first time I smoked pot, I was in the back seat of my older brother’s car. It must have been some pretty good weed, too, because I’m an only child.
THINGS YOU WILL NEVER HEAR DOUG BENSON SAY WHEN HE IS OFFERED SOME MARIJUANA
No.
FEMALE COMPOTABILITY by Tony Camin
My girlfriend thinks that I smoke too much pot. I, on the other hand, don’t think I smoke enough pot, because if I did, I’d be finished. And I’m not. Look, we all have our vices: I like to smoke a little weed; she likes to feed the baby. Different strokes for different folks.

Inside joke book.......2006-12-30
Please don't purchase this book unless you are well acquainted with cannabis and the "stoner culture." This is a book of inside jokes intended only for our community.
don't believe that guy's review...this book rules.......2006-06-27
okay, obviously the guy who wrote the other review HAS NEVER SMOKED WEED. this book is a great read for those who still partake, used to but don't (or most likely, can't), or have friends who do (and have seen them do some of this stuff described in the book). i HIGH-ly recommend it.
crappy book.......2006-03-10
i appreciate the nature of the subjest matter but, the book was short and pretty lame. Many hackneyed anecdotes. Im not sure why this book was even written. Nothing funny or relevant is expressed in the book
Book Description
Trash proudly assembles more than 150 masterpieces of twisted brilliance: lowbrow graphic poster art from the sickest, sleaziest, sexiest, and weirdest films from the 1950s through the 1980s. A feast for the eyes and other visceral zones, Trash rolls in the mud with graphic art of such questionable aesthetic quality and social worth that it practically redefines the poster as advertising medium. Chapters each define a key Trash topic (Sex Trash, Action Trash, Sick Trash, Race Trash, Groovy Trash, Docu Trash), collecting the most zombified, oversexed, lethal pest-infested, and tasteless posters from each genre. With plagues of frogs, meteors headed straight for earth, sex-starved zombies, and explosion after glorious explosion, Trash gleefully crawls across the underbelly of both the cinematic and poster arts.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but not great........2005-04-02
All fans of exploitation cinema will find this a mandatory purchase, but with only 150 images I was a little disappointed. Another drawback is the absence of such exploitation classics as MARK OF THE DEVIL, PINK FLAMINGOS, FREAKS, REEFER MADNESS, MOM AND DAD, MOONSHINE MOUNTAIN, MS. 45, EVEN HITLER HAD A GIRLFRIEND, MANIAC, STREET TRASH and any and all nunsploitation and nazi films, but yet the inclusion of mainstream movies like MAD MAX, THE HOWLING and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK.
Still despite all my complaints it's worth buying. Here are some of my favorites: KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS, SIX PACK ANNE, TRIP WITH THE TEACHER, SCUM OF THE EARTH, DEATH IN SMALL DOSES and THE PUSHER.
A good poster book.......2004-09-18
A good poster book for those who like exploitation cinema. The posters (and some lobby cards) are presented as they have them, flaws and all. (I have met the authors--Besides being collectors, they run a screening room in San Francisco where they show exploitation films off of prints, some quite battered, but that adds to the pleasure.)And fortunately, since this book was published, some of these films have surfaced on DVD as well(although I would love to see Skidoo appear on DVD).
Not 'Trash'.......2002-12-23
I've thumbed through many a poster book at my local bookstores but this one I just had to own! Probably because 'exploitation' movies are my favorite guilty pleasure cinema. Assembled here is some great art, when movie posters actually leapt off of the paper they were drawn on--to get in your face. New movie poster artists should get this book as a reference for their ad campaigns (and you can tell some are starting to...) In an age of such: passiveness in film, where everything is rated PG-13, it's nice to reflect on this golden age of poster art for films, that mostly, delivered what they advertised. A worthy purchase for the film fan.
It is TRASH!.......2002-11-08
part of the appeal of trashy exploitation films are their "smear" campaigns, one-sheets full of bosomy women, firing guns, cars in collision and whatnot. On this level the book is very enjoyable -- HOWEVER, I find the grouping of the posters haphazard (what is CREATION OF THE HUMANOIDS doing in "Groovy Trash?"), many of the posters are in poor condition and the brief introductions to each chapter are highly irritating. The author trips all over himself trying to sound clever and fails dismally. Still ... where else are you going to see a four-color poster for SIX-PACK ANNIE?
Trash- Pick it Up.......2002-09-10
For those of us who have wished for a book that featured nothing but beautiful color reproductions or horror, sci fi and exploitation art this is our answer.
While I love books such as "Immoral Tales" and such, sometimes I just want to look at the art of these one sheets for refrence -design ideas, painting styles, etc... and many books will have only a dozen or so nice color plates while the rest of the book is filled with the authors interpretations of the films.
Trash's focus is on the art and aside from an introduction, (where the author does explain why they chose not to airbrush out the flaws and creases of the posters in the book) there is nothing but photos.
For those who want in depth movie reviews and director profiles, there are several books and web pages out there, but for those of us who also admire the long lost poster ART, this book has fabulous images.
My one complaint is that instead of changing genres each chapter (horror, exploitation, sci fi, etc..) this book should have been a series of books, each catagory being a seperate volume! I hope they print a volume 2.
If you liked this book, check out "Blood and Black Lace" (might be out of print) which has is the definitive book on Italian Giallos, and has many color reproductions of the rare onesheets.

Should be 6 stars........2007-09-22
As this title says, after reading ( for those exercises if you cannot solve, as suggested by the authors, just memorize them !!! )this book, definitely your tactics would be much, much sharpened !!! Anyone should buy this book. Especially concerning the low price rate.
This book will help you win more games!.......2007-01-23
Unless you are a tactics guru, this book is pretty much a gaurentee to help out with your game. My rating plateaued around 1650 for a while and I Eventually took a week and went through the first 500 puzzles in this book (This may sound like a lot, but depending on your strength of play, the first couple hundred puzzles can be very quick to go through). I did this the week before a tournament I was playing in and I found myself almost searching exclusively for tactics in the games, and not paying as much attention to position. It payed off nicely! Within less than a year my rating jumped from 1650 to 1850+. Also I found that my wins became a lot more exciting instead of the "grind it out" and outplay them in the endgame method.
As far as negatives about this book, I can't say that there are any. Remember, this is a puzzle book, puzzle after puzzle after puzzle, with the solutions in the back.
If there is any doubt in your mind that you may need to work on your tactics, I highly recommend this book.
My favorite collection of tactical problems.......2006-10-28
I've had this book a little over a month now and am about 20% of the way through. The book is nothing but problems, 1125 in all, with clear diagrams and highly accurate solutions in algebraic notation.
The goal of the book is to build up your recognition of tactical patterns. To achieve this, the problems are annotated not by motif, but by difficulty. The goal is to work through all the problems relatively quickly. If you get stuck, look up the answer and move on. In general the problems progress in difficulty, but the patterns built up working on the earlier problems help solve the harder ones later. Marking by difficulty allows one to decide when to "give up" and look at the solution, unlike the Reinfeld book for example, where you never know if you are simply being blind, or you've hit one of the really hard problems.
This book has no hints...no "spot the Pin", no "White has just opened the position, why was this a mistake?". So for general practice it is a little more realistic. This book does NOT explain the motifs. If you want that, try Nunn's "Learn Chess Tactics" or one of the similar books by Polgar, Littlewood etc. These books are also better if you find you have a weakness in a particular motif and want to practice just that one (my favorite here, is Muller's "ChessCafe Puzzle Book").
The key is, though they are not labelled as such, the problems are organized by motif and pattern. As you move through the problems you will come across a series of closely related positions. For example, you might get 10 back rank mates in a row, then 10 knight forks. I often find I will hit the first of these, struggle a bit (though usually the first in a series is one of the easier ones), then the second one is quicker because the pattern is starting to establish itself, and so on. So the book really does contain "hints", but my experience is that discovering the pattern yourself cements it more than having it explained and then exercising a series of examples.
For me at least, this approach seems to work better than that in the classic Reinfeld books, and "Sharpen Your Tactics" has replaced them at my bedside.
Simply amazing...very fast way to raise your rating!.......2006-09-13
All I have to say is that I was a 1300 ICC rated player for a long time, and recently started reading this book. I'm barely a quarter of the way through it and have already broke 1520!
Gradual gradation builds the chess nation.......2006-04-09
This is one important book that all aspiring chess players should master. It begins from humble beginnings and goes to higher levels. The star system while subjective is very good. The method of study should be different for most of the four star problems should be different than the 1-3 in that they are mostly processes rather than operations. (Like the Botvinik Gruenfeld game). I recommend doing all of the 1-3 stars, commiting them to memory and only then going back over the 4 star problems. All in all this is an excellant book and the authors should be commended for a first class tactics work. A must buy for everyone under 2300 and a good deal for some that are over it. Beginners will flourish from this book.

Voice-Overs also features a comprehensive list of on-line resources and contact addresses, an extensive glossary of voice-over terms, and free CD with backing tracks that can be used with the scripts in the book to make your own demo tape.
Customer Reviews:
Voice-Overs is EXCELLENT!.......2002-10-26
I found this book and the accompanying CD extremely helpful in timing, do's and dont's and how to slow down or speed up to fit in a spot. The accompanying jingles and examples are fantastic!
So You 've Got A Nice Voice.......2001-11-24
This book makes it clear that having a 'nice voice' is as much a guarantee of geting voice-over work as 'having two hands' is a guarantee of being a famous concert pianist.
The book is very detailed and thorough with many examples of scripts for the reader to try out. There is also a free CD with the book which has examples of good and bad voice-overs together with many backing tracks and jingles to accompany the scripts in the book.
An excellent book which is rapidly becoming the definitive text on this exciting career.

Product Description
THE BOOK THAT HAD TO WAIT FOR BRANDO TO DIE The mysteries that enveloped the late superstar MARLON BRANDO (1924-2004) are unwrapped and exposed in a richly anecdotal warts-and-all biography, BRANDO UNZIPPED! by bestselling biographer, Darwin Porter. The greatest film actor of the 20th century lives again in these pages, each meticulously researched over a period of more than 40 years. Each of the people Porter interviewed, including many of Brandos loversboth male and female--had a different story to tell. Many of them contradicted heretofore published accounts of how those encounters evolved. Hostile witness or loving friend, each subject added a piece to the mosaic. The result is a fully rounded view of a revolutionary actor who, like lightning on legs, electrified the world in Streetcar Named Desire, where he played Stanley Kowalski in the Broadway version of 1947, and the film version in 1951. The book also describes his Oscar-winning turn as Terry Malloy, the boxer who could have been a contender in On the Waterfront in 1954, and his electrifying comeback as Vito Corleone in The Godfather in 1972. The combative, moody, iconoclastic, polarizing, and enigmatic figure appears as a flesh-and-blood creation in this revelation-studded bio. Its all here: The Rebel Without a Cause who made rebellion hip. The suicide attempts of former girlfriends, Startling stories about Sleeping with the Enemy (bedding a stalker who turned out to be a cannibal in disguise). His involvement with the Black Panthers. The ill-fated marriages, bitter divorces, and child-custody battles. A son with a murder rap. Jealous actors who wanted to seduce Brando and then become Brando on screen. With candor, the author unveils the details of that ongoing disaster that Brando called my life. The charismatic personality of The Wild One is recaptured in all its brooding power that seemed forever ready to explode at any moment. The same animalistic intensity that Brando brought to the role of Stanley Kowalski lives again within the pages of this bio. From sex symbol of the 1950s to a swollen, overweight slob who became a tabloid scandal in the 90s, Brando was one of filmdoms true originals. Women wanted him, and certain men wanted him, and Brando was willing to share his charms with a string of lovers whose hangouts ranged from the A-list boudoirs of New York and Hollywood to the back alleys of a string of cities from New York to the slums of the South Pacific. Throughout this biography, Brandos quirky and sometimes bizarre humor often bubbles to the top. As an example, once, when he was asked for a summation of his life, Brando said: Ive never been circumcised, and my noble tool has performed its duties through thick and thin without fail! More than the story of Brando himself, the biography chronicles the loves of his life, most of which were of short duration but played out with the same kind of intensity he brought to the screen. Regardless of their origins, his affairs invariably crossed the American plains to land on the opposite coast. His lovers were as mercurial as his own personality. They included Doris Duke, the richest woman in the world, and Burt Lancaster, the actor originally targeted for the role of Stanley in Streetcar. The true story of his explosive relationships with Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra is printed for the first time, as is an array of friendships and/or feuds with such unlikely figures as Richard Burton, Charlie Chaplin, and (believe it or not), Michael Jackson. The roles Brando lived off-screen were even more provocative and intriguing than those he created on screen. He paraded through the bedrooms of such luminaries as an aging Marlene Dietrich, and enjoyed one-night stands with both Grace Kelly and Jacqueline Kennedy. His tortured relationships and love affairs with James Dean and Montgomery Clift are explored in depth, as is the pass
Customer Reviews:
"Brando Unzipped..." - Mostly A Work Of Fiction???.......2007-08-15
I am not sure what to think regarding this book, "Brando Unzipped: A Revisionist and Very Private Look at America's Greatest Actor." I believe some of the contents of the book to be accurate based on my reading on Brando and interviews he has done, but I felt in reading the book that there was a large amount of content that seemed to be mere conjecture and gossip on the parts of "sources" - "sources" I am not sure were real, legitimate, or entirely truthful. In addition, in some cases, sources were not cited at all and statements were made that sounded to me as if the author "thought" certain things "may" have occurred and included those as well. If this is true, then I am concerned about a possible lack of journalistic integrity.
I am highly doubtful that all of the sexual liaisons author, Darwin Porter, describes in this book are accurate or balanced. I doubt that Porter was present during Marlon Brando's sexual encounters and I do not think the scant few "sources" cited in the book were present either. Some of this author's inclusions do not ring true to me. I wonder if the author's own feelings, desires, and personal obsessions got in the way of telling a completely truthful and balanced story.
With regard to the writing, I think this was a tedious read in some respects - the pace was too slow, the book was too lengthy, and there were too many unnecessary details that led to boredom for me as the reader. It could have been better edited. Having said that, it is not the worst I have read, but it is not one I would have purchased for the price I did ($30 including S&H) had I known it was not the great book I thought it would be. To me, it is just an average book, at best, and I am left with doubt as to its integrity.
The Tale of the Noble Tool.......2007-07-21
Well this book certainly destroyed the myth of many of Hollywood's most famous stars. It was a fasinating read full of gossip, some known and some not previously revealed. However, I had problems with verbatim conversations that were not properly footnoted. Was there a fly on the wall? Brando was not someone I would want to know!
Pure rubbish through and through...??? (revised).......2007-07-09
While reading this book, it made me want to shower after each chapter read. Salacious, depraved detail after detail with dubious posthumous dialogue between Brando, his conquests/"f**k buddies", and friends. I don't know what to believe after reading this mess. This book will definitely have you not like Marlon Brando, even to the point of disgustful hatred. With all the screwing around he did, it's a wonder his genitals didn't rot off. If he lived today he would surely be HIV positive. Having been sexually molested/abused by a nanny, and purportedly his own mother, I could think of no other reason for him to have lived so pathologically promiscuous. Brando was definitely a very "unwell", psychically damaged man; this was well-proven up into his last days. I can't really say if this book was exaggerated to say the least, but it sure left me feeling like I discovered something I wish I hadn't. I will never see or look at another Marlon Brando film or photo the same way again. If you want to know more about Marlon Brando, I suggest you read elsewhere, as I will. I gave it a chance, but came to the conclusion of it being cheap, exploitative tabloid [...] instead.
This book just had me shaking my head in disbelief exclaiming "NOT MY MAN!", rendering me mortified...and saying a prayer for his immortal soul.
The infamous "picture" half-way through had me petrified. Just proves the author was banking on sleazy shock value to generate interest and sales. Mr. Porter obviously got my attention, but I'm glad I kept the receipt.
Brando: The Man or the Myth?.......2007-06-22
It's hard to know what to make of this book. Over 600 pages of bedroom revelation covering a mere 15 year period, and make no mistake, each page contains multiple couplings with the famous and not-so-famous. If only a fraction are true, Brando qualifies as a world-class sexual athlete. And that's the trouble. The reader can't know how much to believe since the vignettes pass by rapidly and without attribution. There're some named sources cited at volume's end, but these remain vague and without specifics. Given Brando's proven allure and prodigious talent (at least, during the early years), it's a good bet many are true. But which ones and to what extent, we can only imagine. Author Darwin Porter's narrative resembles a scorecard more than a biography, zipped, unzipped or flagging in the wind. In fact, the narrative leaves much to be desired. The thread, such as it is, follows a rough time-line from about 1943 to 1960, though dates are rarely cited. Instead, the episodes unfold fluidly without framing, merging ultimately into a kind of orgiastic reverie. I hate to say so, but the piling-on becomes repetitive and eventually rather monotonous. Anyone looking to better understand Brando, the man or the artist, better look elsewhere. And in what may be the unkindest reaction of all-- the author manages to turn this legend's rich private life into what is finally a rather tiresome read.
Salacious, gossipy unorthodox bio........2007-01-19
Has such a salacious biography ever been written on a major Hollywood star before?.
Forget the Brando that most of my generation became acqainted with in movies like The Godfather. In the late 40's; 50's and possibly into the 60's before the huge weight gain...he was quite the sex god. According to Darwin Potters book he must have slept with half of Hollywood, male and female and unapologetic or ashamed about his bisexuality.
Its juicy, gossipy and I couldnt put it down, whilst Potter acknowledges his sources pretty close to the revelation. The only problem I had was when he recounts private conversations between Brando and his paramours verbatim...
Another side to a true legend and individual, a good buy.
Oh yes the infamous photograph is included as well.

Book Description
On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. stood in front of the Lincoln Memorial looking out over thousands of troubled Americans who had gathered in the name of civil rights and uttered his now famous words, "I have a dream . . ." It was a speech that changed the course of history.
This anniversary edition honors Martin Luther King Jr.'s courageous dream and his immeasurable contribution by presenting his most memorable words in a concise and convenient edition. As Coretta Scott King says in her foreword, "This collection includes many of what I consider to be my husband's most important writings and orations." In addition to the famed keynote address of the 1963 march on Washington, the renowned civil rights leader's most influential words included here are the "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," the essay "Pilgrimage to Nonviolence," and his last sermon, "I See the Promised Land," preached the day before he was assassinated.
Editor James M. Washington arranged the selections chronologically, providing headnotes for each selection that give a running history of the civil rights movement and related events. In his introduction, Washington assesses King's times and significance.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Collection of Speeches.......2007-01-15
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of America's greatest heroes and this is a collection of his wonderful writings and speeches. Often people stop at "I Have a Dream" but this shows the complete evolution of Dr. King. A wonderful read that has been part of my library for the past 10 years -- and I've read it three times and often use it for reference and store it next to the Bible.
AMERICANS SHOULD REALIZE THIS 'DREAM' TO THE FULLEST!.......2002-11-28
Dr. Martin Luther King's collection of writings and speeches, "I Have A Dream", brings aspiration to light. The events that surrounded the life and death of this true hero reveals the shameful fact that no matter how great the United States of America is today, it is one country that was nurtured with inhumane machinery: slavery, racism, injustice, Mickey-Mouse freedom, and Mickey-Mouse democracy. I hate to think about it, but it is an honest fact, which we should all come to terms with. Nobody can rewrite history.
The 256 pages that is "I Have A Dream" was enough to highlight the wickedness and the violence that were deliberately sustained in America, for a full century, after a bloody Civil War ended her tenacity on slavery.
One question that will always beg for answer is: How on earth did U.S. Presidents who presided over the ruthless color-bar era qualified for those Nobel Peace Prizes that they received? Knowing what life was like in the U.S.A. just a couple of decades ago melts my heart. "I Have A Dream" is a big eye-opener!
The essential King.......2001-10-26
"I Have a Dream: Writings and Speeches That Changed the World," by Martin Luther King, Jr., is a fine collection of texts by this important figure. The book has been edited by James M. Washington. Coming in at less than 300 pages, this is a concise but meaty book.
Washington includes King's most important texts: the "Letter from Birmingham Jail"; the "I Have a Dream" speech; his Nobel Prize acceptance speech; "My Trip to the Land of Gandhi"; "A Time to Break Silence," his 1967 speech criticizing the United States war in Vietnam, and more. These writings and speeches cover King's great themes: nonviolent resistance, the African-American civil rights movement, etc.
Those seeking a more comprehensive collection of Kings' work should seek out "A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr." also edited by James M. Washington. At more than 700 pages, this is a truly monumental collection, and includes much material not found in "I Have a Dream": the 1965 "Playboy" interview, transcripts of television interviews, and more. But for those who want a shorter text that cuts to the heart of King's life and work, "I Have a Dream" is perfect.
"I Have a Dream" reveals King to be a true Christian prophet, and a man with a global vision. As literature, these texts also show King to be the heir of such American thinkers as Henry David Thoreau and W.E.B. DuBois. Highly recommended.
Excellent introduction to Dr. King's works.......2000-10-21
This collection of Dr. King's writings includes all the major speeches -- such as I Have A Dream and I See the Promised Land, as well as important writings such as Letter from A Birmingham Jail. It also has great essays on the lessons Dr. King learned from Ghandi and a wonderful introduction from Mrs. King. This is a great collection to get started learning about Dr. King -- from his own pen. I highly reccomend it.
Inspirational.......2000-06-21
Reading the speeches of Dr. King are inspiring. You get a glimpse into his mind and to genuinely understand the struggle he was up against. I'm not just refering to the Civil Rights movement. you also get insights into the responsibilities and pressure he felt as the leader of this movement. He was a man who changed history. This book offers glimpses into his humanity as well as his motivational and inspirational speeches. A must for anyone interested in American history, the Civil Rights movement or in biographys. It will continue to effect you long after you have put the book down.
