Book Description
"An Extraordinary Gathering of Angels is an exquisite visual and thoughtful study of the complex and fascinating world of angels in the Judaic-Christian tradition. Using more than 250 artworks, leading Biblical scholar and practicing theologian, Margaret Barker takes the reader on an extraordinary journey among the realm of angels. Barker makes this wonderful world accessible to all readers--mini essays make sense of the complex angel cosmology and detailed picture captions explain the meaning and significance of each angel type. Margaret also has included interviews she has taken with key theologians, artists and writers who have particular and sometimes differing viewpoints on the significance of angels.

Gifts for the Eye and Spirit.......2005-03-06
Slightly wider than a standard paperback, this hardback book is like a mini-coffee table art book. It contains over 170 color illustrations, including a wide range of "paintings, frescoes, stained glass windows, icons, and sculpture." The book is structured into 13 chapters, each with an introductory essay by Margaret Barker, notes and comments on the paintings, quotes from significant thinkers and scriptures on topic, and interviews with theologians writers from various religious traditions (including Jewish, Muslim, Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and LDS). Those familiar with Barker's other works will recognize her distinctive approach emerging in her introductory essays and selection of quotations. Barker has authored 10 significant books of Biblical scholarship, and served a term as the president elect of the Society for Old Testament Study. She is also a Methodist preacher, and writes from a perspective of one involved and committed. Her writing is always vivid, insightful, and relevant. Those interested in angels for themselves, or as a gift book, will find here a delightful treasure of art and insight. Those interested in to Barker's approaches at an introductory level for general readers, either for themselves, or for others, should be well served here. Those familiar with her scholarship will be pleased that one of the art works depicted is the orthodox icon of Wisdom, which she discusses in several essays in The Great High Priest. Highly recommended, as are all her books.

Chinkok Tan has painted and taught for more than 40 years. In Watercolor Basics: Shape and Light Value, he shows the art student how to see and simplify one's subjects. Tan suggests that every subject "reveals itself in light values and shapes. When you finish this book, you should be able to paint anything without sketching." An introduction to supplies provides the tools needed to get started for under 80 dollars, and a primer on techniques describes painting sources and how to lay a flat wash. Tan begins his lessons by explaining light values (color) and how to mix them. He teaches the painter to abandon outlining one's subjects and to instead focus on painting correct shapes and silhouettes. He then presents a three-step process of painting shape, shade, and detail; how to use higher or lower values for varying effects; and how to build harmonious compositions. The book closes with complete step-by-step painting demonstrations. Tan's method is simple, straightforward, and easy to grasp, yet he achieves surprisingly sophisticated and refreshing painted effects, as in the waxy sheen of green and red apples poised in a luminous glass bowl. Tan asserts, "I can say with absolute certainty that painting is a skill anybody with interest can learn. It has nothing to do with talent or gift." This book of basic techniques is ideal for the beginning painter, but will also prove of benefit to more experienced artists who wish to revisit fundamental lessons of perception and "trusting the eye." --Mary Ribesky
Book Description
"Light values and shapes are the two essential elements of painting. These two values enable us to see and feel the space, form, structure, perspective and texture around us." Author and artist Chinkok Tan has developed an easy-to-teach and easy-to-learn method for painting watercolor that will allow anyone to achieve good results with a minimum of study time.
Tan combines his clear teaching on seeing color values in light with an equally clear and simple teaching on seeing shapes properly. His three-step painting process develops the form of an object by adding shade and detail, while still keeping the process simple for the beginner. This method eliminates the need for complicated courses in drawing, anatomy, perspective and color theory.
* Helps simplify the process of watercolor painting without simplifying the results
* Teaches how to paint directly and immediately using shapes and light values

Straightforward and clearly stated..........2001-12-22
Love the simplicity of its approach to delineating shape and light. A plus addition to my how to library.

The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw is a delightful treasury of McManus's favorite (mostly outdoor) adventures with friends. His stories explore the human capacity to laugh in the face of misfortune, such as "The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw" (Goombaw is Eddie Muldoon's grandmother) and "The Fried Flies, Please, and Easy on the Garlic," a story of dinner-party adversity:
[CODE] "Martha starts. 'I do hope you won't take offense, Mr. McGinnis, but I view hunters as the lowest form of life, not excluding bacteria and algae.' 'No offense taken,' I reply, glad for an excuse to ignore my vichyssoise, which I view as the lowest form of food, not excluding lichens and boiled beets." [CODE] American humorist Patrick McManus could make being snagged by a fishhook funny, and in fact, he does. In his story "Getting It in the Ear," he writes, "One of the more interesting things that can happen to an angler is to get a barbed hook sunk into his hide. Such is the horror and fascination of the experience that many an angler has contemplated giving up his regular work and hitting the lecture circuit to entertain audiences around the nation with a dramatic rendering of his ordeal." After all, he argues, it's the misery endured that defines the sportsman, not the fish caught or the game shot. McManus's understated, matter-of-fact vignettes--infused with amusing glimpses of life's lesser-known eternal truths-- will make you laugh.

One of the VERY BEST.......2007-07-28
First let me say I found the Patrick McManus stories funny each month as I got that magazine. Maybe it was Outdoor Life,,,,,
Then I read there that I could get books full of his stories.
WOW, I bought all of them.
I must say though that I like this one best.
BTW, If you ever read a story by Pat about being lost in the woods by all means believe him. I am way up here in NW lower Michigan.
A man I know who is a regular fisherman was fishing a local river. He was away from any road when he happened to find a man that had been fishing, but was asking how to get out of there back to a road. After he had told the guy to just follow the river that way for about two more miles the guy introduced himself,,, Guess who? Patrick McManus of course. 8>))

I can't rate this. It was purchased as a gift, so I did not read it.
Here you go Mrs. Galloway!!!!!.......2005-05-04
Now, I'm actually from Idaho where this book is actually based off of. Despite all of the Sarcasm, you got Idaho. HAHA LOL. I know this is bad but I hate to read. I had to read this book for an english assignment. But I really like this book. It is non-stop laughter. I think I am going to read all of his books now. I hope that is enough for you to be convinced that this book really is good and should be read by anyone who loves humorous books. HAPPY READING! :)
The Night The Bear Ate Goombaw.......2005-03-22
This book is hilarious. We like to read it to the middle and high school kids. You can hear them laughing about the fur coat, etc. outside the building. It has sparked many a boy into getting Partick's other books and reading for themselves. As a library director I know how hard it is to get middle and high school kids to read for pleasure. Patrick McManus is sure a pleasure. When I read the Goombaw story, and I have numerous times I still can not get through it without tears running down my face.
'Pass out laughing' funny.......2005-01-09
I have always thought that Patrick McManus is the funniest writer on the planet. I read his stories when I need to laugh or relax. Sometimes I irritate my wife by reading it in bed. I try not to laugh out loud, but I only succeed in sounding like I am trying to muffle continuous sneezes.
However, not everyone gets it. I have been shocked by watching people read McManus without so much as a smile (though most start snorting like wild pigs on acid) . My only guess is that getting McManus requires a couple things. First, it requires some understanding of his experiences. He absolutely nails all of the stupid things 'outdoors men (outdoors people)' do and think, but don't want anybody to know about. Second, you have to see the self-deprecating aspect of his humor. Third, you can't look for great literature in integrated books. Patrick McManus is an excellent writer, if you see these as independent stories simply collected in a volume. They are meant for adults who want to laugh at themselves. So, If you are willing to or already meet the above three criteria, you will love this book.
By the way, I am a professor of clinical psychology and (other than worrying a little about McManus) I sometimes recommend this and other McManus books. I do this with people who have racing thoughts and anxiety at bedtime, and when I believe they have the necessary experiences to find it funny. It often works quite well. I think of his stories as little pieces of happiness. (Oh, that even makes me sick to hear. Sorry)

Though wildly popular, daytime soaps are arguably the most denigrated and parodied of any contemporary entertainment form. For this reason, even the most devoted soap opera fans are often reticent or even secretive about the shows they love. Watching Daytime Soap Operas is a meditation on the pleasures--and displeasures--of watching and talking about daytime soap operas. In this multidisciplinary study, Louise Spence talks to 25 women about their mostly solitary viewing practices and observes many Internet chat rooms. Over 20 years in the making, the book explores the varied critical and creative ways in which the women use soap operas in their lives. Spence draws on work in reception studies, and pays particular attention to the question of what it means to be a fan. She ultimately challenges the accepted belief that soap opera viewers are passive consumers of escapist fantasy. Her study expands the current literature of this largely misunderstood television genre while making an important contribution to the field of film-TV studies.

Book Description
The battle for the World Chess Championship has witnessed numerous titanic struggles that have engaged the interest not only of chess enthusiasts but of the public at large. The chessboard is the ultimate mental battleground and the world champions themselves are supreme intellectual gladiators.
This magnificent compilation of chess from the mid-20th century forms the basis of the second part of Garry Kasparov's long-awaited definitive history of the World Chess Championship. Garry Kasparov, who is universally acclaimed as the greatest chess player ever, subjects the play of his early predecessors to a rigorous analysis. This volume features the play of champions Max Euwe (1935-1937) Mikhail Botvinnik (1946-1957, 1958-1961 and 1961-1963), Vassily Smyslov (1957-1958) and Mikhail Tal (1960-1961).
However, this book is more than just a compilation of the games of these champions. Kasparov's biographies place them in a fascinating historical, political and cultural context. Kasparov explains how each champion brought his own distinctive style to the chessboard and enriched the theory of the game with new ideas.
Customer Reviews:
very good book by a chess immortal.......2007-03-09
This is a very good book in an excellent series. Kasparov not only provides a thorough analysis of each player's style but also provides insight into the often neglected human aspects of chess. Not a book for beginners but for anyone seriously interested in chess a must read. I have only two adverse comments - Kasparov's sociopolitical comments add nothing to the book and will annoy some readers and he repeatedly uses the word tabiya without explaining it - even Russians of my acquaintance could not explain it to me - from context I think it is a term for a place where chess theory ends. My rating of 4 stars is not from any failing in the book but from a feeling one needs to be more seriously into chess than I am to really get full value from it.
good book, good short bios, but analysis over my head.......2006-05-26
good book, good short bios, but analysis over my head
Fantastic.......2005-11-21
I can't imagine how anyone could give anything less than 5 stars for these books, when you compare them to the rest of the chess market. This entire series is probably one of the greatest literary works in the history of chess.
Not only are there fantastic games to play through, and an easy way for learning players to grasp the progression of chess from centuries ago to today, but these books also make fantastic reads even if you simply skip over all the annotated games.
People like to criticize things because it makes them feel smart. These books are absolute gold and are so far above any similar work.
Not really a work of genius........2005-07-15
I obtained a copy of this book mainly because i was interested on the section about Botvinnik. Kasparov or Plisetsky gives a reasonable account of Botvinniks chess career and this is easily the best section.
After the section on Botvinnik the book isnt really that good, the sections on Euwe and Smyslov being average and the section on Tal is very dissapointing.
Infact the section on Tal gets me abit mad as Kasparov wastes lots of space with pointless analysis that nobody is ever going to follow. Kasparov never really comments about Tals openings repertoire at all, i can find no mention or discussion about Tal playing the modern benoni or what he played against kings pawn openings.
Surely if Kasparov wants to write a book about his great predecessors he should mention a little bit more in depth the way the players played or the systems that they used.
The book is reasonably good dont get me wrong, but its not a work of genius like ive heard it described.
An important book about the post Alekhine era.......2005-02-01
In 1988 I had the opportunity to meet Tal and Smyslov, and to make short interviews with the two.
I asked Smyslov for his opinion about chess of the 70's and the 80's, and especially about the young champions (then) Fischer, Karpov and Kasparov. Smyslov answered, that niether of them brought something new to chess.
In fact, he included all the champions of his days in the list, including himself. "I don't see a progress since the days of Capablanca and Alekhine, and I still recommend to learn first of all from the two", he said.
"What about Fischer or Kasparov?", I asked.
"They had'nt brought some thing new to chess", he answered.
I find it interesting, because Kasprov himself tells in the book, that Botvinik demanded from him to play "like Capablanca". Both sayings can tell us something about the Soviet School spirit, that put Capablanca as the ideal chess player.
But isn't there any progressat all, since the 30's? Kasparov himself, claims, naturally, for a major progress since then. I wonder.
I asked Tal, about computers, that won't be fooled by his unique style and sacs. Tal, that looked very bad (I didn't recognise him by the old pictures I had), smiled and said: "Let me play against a computer. It will blow up within a minute, BOOM!".
Unfortunately I don't share this thought of the late champion, but Kasparov surprised me, by telling in the book, that even today with computers, the majority of Tal famous combinations are not totally proved to be wrong.
Reading this book gave me a very good idea about history of the game from the mid 30's to the early 60's. Euwe, for example, was allways seemed to get the crown by an accident that happened to the drunk Alekhine. Kasparov shows that Alekhine played bad even before the 1935 match and Euwe deserved to be a champion.
Also it's interesting to read about Botvinik and the Soviet party, and about the poor Astonian Paul Keres, that did'nt have a chance in the USSR. Witnesses of talks, memories and stories from these days are brought, including the personal "black list" of Botvinik. All the years I thought of the Soviet school as a united devision, but now I read that Botvinik hated all the challengers of his time, and the champions to come.
So the book is read also as a "regular" book with a plot, not only as a chess book. The games are illustrated by many diagrams, and this is not a technical comment. You can "read" the games also without the need of a board. The collection of games is very good and represents the players.
I don't care if Kasparov actually wrote the book alone or just gave it his name. It's clear that he would'nt put his signature of a bad product or something that he does'nt agree with. Maybe there are mistakes in the book, but read all the classics of chess, including Fischer's "My 60 memorable games" and Botvinik's book about USSR championship of 1941. Read all of them, and find errors...Still, they remain classic, and the 2 first parts of "My great predecessors" will join them very soon.

Book Description
MAUS was the first half of the tale of survival of the author's parents, charting their desperate progress from prewar Poland Auschwitz. Here is the continuation, in which the father survives the camp and is at last reunited with his wife.
Customer Reviews:
Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
Spiegelman continues the story of his father's life, through Auschwitz and afterwards, and his feelings about what has happened to him.
The story is told using animal forms for the people within, different classes of people are represented as different animals. Mice, obviously are used to represent the prisoners.
A hauntingly good work........2007-01-11
Haunting, you'll find certain parts that keep coming back to you. Don't let the artwork fool you, this is no children's book. This work is honest, and perhaps because of it, is very emotionally affecting. I've had to read it more than once to really appreciate it.
Astonishing -- a must read.......2006-10-23
I was compelled to read this after finishing Art Spiegelman's astonishingly brilliant "Maus," a graphic novel retelling his father, Vladek's, experiences as a Jew in Poland during WWII. This sequel picks up right where the first left off, with Vladek's separation from wife, Anja, after arriving at Auschwitz. There Vladek must struggle to survive starvation and disease as well as the guards and the ovens, all while trying to get news of his wife from over in Auschwitz's second camp, Birkenau. His horrific time there is expertly rendered as Spiegelman manages to get across a complex range of emotions through his illustrations and words. Even after Auschwitz is abandoned and the Nazi soldiers go on the run, Vladek must still struggle to survive and make his way to safety. His journey home to his wife (from Auschwitz to an abandoned German landscape, through ruined cities and, finally, back to the now unrecognizable city he once called home) is utterly compelling, unforgettable stuff.
Equally compelling is the story of Vladek in later years that is mixed in with his history in both volumes of "Maus", after he has come to America with Anja, had another son (the first, Richieu, did not survive the war), lost Anja to suicide in 1968, remarried, developed a heart condition and a strained relationship with his surviving son, and begins telling his story to 'Artie', who is interested in adapting his father's tale into a comic book). In the WWII segments Spiegelman captures the horrors that took place during that tragic time, and in these father-son moments he explores how surviving an event like that leaves a mark on you forever, and can even pass on the burden of survivor's guilt to a new generation that wasn't even alive when the atrocities took place. Surprisingly, it is during these deeply personal moments that the "Maus" books really hit home the hardest. Spiegelman does a masterful job getting across the complex personalities of his characters and how the past has left a wide, seemingly impassable gulf between him and his father. Really, it is just a beautiful portrait of their relationship and I cannot recommend it enough. Spiegelman's delicate, earnest elegy to his father -- and to all survivors and victims of the Holocaust alike -- is a true triumph of literature and a heartbreaking look at one of history's greatest tragedies.
An Incredible Historical Perspective (Part 2).......2006-10-11
This conclusion of Maus 1 is the conclusion of Holocaust survivor Vladek Spiegelman's story and of the father-son relationship explored throughout the work.
This book tells the story of Vladek's time in Aushwitz, the liberation of the camps and the rebuilding of a new life. There is a lot more in Maus 2 about the relationships and mental trauma of a Holocaust survivor. It's really very moving.
Maus 2 is the second testament to Speigelman's brilliance as a story-teller and artist, Maus 1 being the first. His understanding of the depth of history and how it effects our lives is impressive.
Spectacular account of the Holocaust.......2005-07-09
I first read Maus II when I was in fourth or fifth grade, but, of course, I didn't really grasp the true horror of it all at the time. I decided to buy a copy a couple of months ago and see if it lived up to my memory, and I was not disappointed. Now that I'm nine or ten years older and more attuned to the world and its history, it's that much more poignant. The insanity of the time period is hard to comprehend, but even in a cartoon, Spiegelman is able to give us some small idea of the reality.
I definitely recommend this book to everyone. Even if (like me) you're not a fan of graphic novels, this is still worth the read.

Religio-fascism rears its pitiful head.......2006-08-11
This book was recommended to me by Amazon.com based on my ownership of a cookbook by Nigella Lawson "How to be a Domestic Goddess." A very interesting software program?
As a journalist who specializes in terrorism and Woman of Free-Irish, Free Scot and Free American Indian bloodlines, as well as a member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) and a descendant of Highland Scots and Irish transported to America by the British, my interest was piqued!
While a book of certain historical interest whether green or pink, real or fake, it is just one more encouragement to religio-fascist fanatics. (Those fools really don't need much to get hysterical.)
Grass-roots organization manuals can be very useful in organizing one's chosen community and this one could be a help. There is good advice, but at what cost?
I read the other reviews as well as reviewing the book. I noticed that the only reviewer to give this book 5 stars has the last name "Ali", a shiite sword-carrying son-in-law of "prophet" mohammad a la ramzi yousef and khalid sheikh mohammad. (Lower case letters are not a typo.)
Yesterday, shiite al queda had it's fantasy of eclipsing 9/11 with blowing up about 6,000 people on twenty airplanes thwarted.
Maybe Amazon should reconsider recommending this book.
Great Read.......2006-03-24
Although this book does not offer any form of training really, it was still a good way to get into the mindset of a guerilla fighter. It's interesting to see the correlation between the way the Taliban use some of these tactics in the war in Iraq and throughout the Middle East.
An historical document of its time.......2003-01-03
Discussion on the merits or otherwise of this pamphlet seems to have generated more heat than light amongst its Amazon reviewers to date. It is what it is - an historical document from the 1950s - not a contemporary training manual or a justification for the recent conflict in Ireland and other areas which were also affected by that conflict. Readers anticipating modern guerrilla warfare theories or an insight into contemporary Irish Republican analysis and strategies will, therefore, find nothing of value in this work. Similarly, those who rail against its authenticity on the grounds that its contents bear no resemblance to materials which a number of recent works have reproduced from 'The Green Book' (and such accusations are clear evidence that the reviewers' knowledge of same is not gleaned from first hand acquaintance with that particular book), are being ahistorical - 'The Green Book' is of comparatively recent vintage, was not in print at the time of the pamphlet under review and belongs to another time and another form of conflict. Technological and military advances since the publication of the pamphlet render most of its content redundant. It should be appraised merely as a product of its time, providing an insight into the type of conflict its authors believed it necessary to prepare for and conduct. The handbook's utility should be judged historically not for its military acumen or lack of it but for its actual relevance to the real political and military circumstances pertaining at the time of its publication. It is the product of a particular militarist/political mindset at a specific period of Irish history, and that is all it is. As an aid to understanding how a section of Irish Republicans once viewed its options it is of interest, as an aid to understanding the ideology that section promoted amongst some of its followers it is of interest, but the pamphlet holds nothing of real value for those interested in either military strategy or contemporary Irish Republicanism. It is an interesting reprint of an obsolete document and as such is of limited value to a readership seeking up to date information on Irish affairs. As an aid to research for those studying militant Irish Republicanism it is, of course, a primary source for the period in which it was produced and distributed and it is strictly as an historical document that the pamphlet is best understood.
FAKE!.......2001-11-20
Serious doubt must be cast on the authenticity of this book. Other descriptions of the IRA 'Green Book' for initiates are inconsistant with this publication--the history of its publisher ('How to be a Hitman,' among other works) must also cast severe doubt on its credibility. Not for scholarly research.
