A treasure for consideration.......2007-08-07
Loved this book! Lengthy but never a not-return-to book! Michael O'Brien gracefully integrated a deep sensitivity to the culture of monasticism, the sacredness of the Judaic tradition, a personal anguish over the holocaust, and a looking-ahead into what might be if humankind continues to abrogate responsibility for seeking out and living the truth. It was like being invited into a conjecture... what might happen if we don't pay attention to one another, the Word of God, and history... Thought-provoking and haunting.
Great book.......2007-07-30
I sometimes have trouble reading books that examine theological or religious issues. Placing them in a novel format is something I greatly appreciate.
I had read some years ago that Mr. O'Brien had come under spiritual attack while writing this book. I can see why. I could feel myself being drawn toward a certain holiness as I read "Father Elijah". I think I have added this author to my short lis of favorite writers.
Reads like a fast paced mystery novel.......2007-03-29
If you're looking for a well-written fast-paced Catholic fictional novel within the genre of "mystery" that will strengthen your own faith, this is a great buy and a great read. At points, I could not put the book down - I would say up for hours at night in the same position on the couch reading voraciously. Yes, it's 596 pages, but that's illusional; it reads as if it is much shorter. At the time of writing this review, Amazon is selling it for $10.85, which is a steal - so what are you waiting for?
One of my favourite books!.......2007-02-15
I have read this 600 pages in 9 days. That is a signal of what a turn-page the book is. I think of this book as a highly recomdable one. I think it is a real thriller, but with a very deep sense inside. It gets you inside the argument, and it can make you nervous sometimes, at taking into account how close it is to the real situation in north America and Western Europe.
Great Writing.......2007-01-22
Michael D. O'Brien is a spectacular writer, and so is the story he tells. Once I began reading this book I simply could not put it down. The copy I was reading belonged to someone else, so I'm am buying my own and intend to read it again as soon as it arrives, as well as every one of Mr. O'Brien's other books. Read it, you won't be disappointed!

There are few crime story recipes more overdone than that involving a suspect who, for some reason, can't recall whether he or she committed murder. Yet Brazilian author Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza brings considerable spice to this device in December Heat, his second novel featuring the bookish and independent Inspector Espinosa.
Leaving a Rio de Janeiro restaurant one evening, retired cop Vieira Crisóstomo, too drunk to stay on his feet, is helped into his car by his prostitute girlfriend, Magali. In the process, he drops his wallet, which is promptly snatched up by a homeless boy. The next morning, Magali is found dead in her Copacabana apartment, naked, with a plastic bag over her head, and lashed to her bed by Vieira's belt. With liquor obscuring Vieira's memory of the previous night, yet every clue suggesting that he asphyxiated his lover, Espinosa tells the ex-officer, "the only reason I'm not arresting you is because I don't think you're stupid enough to accumulate so much evidence against yourself." But who else might have murdered Magali? And is there a link between that crime and subsequent homicides related to Vieira's missing wallet? Answering those questions will send Espinosa after drug traffickers and corrupt cops, lead to assaults on both him and Vieira, and leave the inspector vulnerable to seduction by Vieira's new mistress, Flor--a woman who boasts as many secrets as she does curves.
The leisurely pace of Garcia-Roza's tale reflects that of its sultry coastal setting. His characters vary between the hedonistic and the indigent, but are drawn with unfailing sympathy. Particularly captivating are this novelist's portrayals of women; in one instance, Espinosa tells a young painter here that "you have a navel that proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that God exists and that he's a sculptor." Like The Silence of the Rain, Garcia-Roza's first installment of his Espinosa trilogy, December Heat is a coolly delivered blend of the ominous and the sensual, hinting at what Oscar Hijuelos or Gabriel García Márquez might accomplish, were they ever to try penning detective fiction. --J. Kingston Pierce
Book Description
retired policeman spends a typically alcohol-filled evening with his girlfriend, a prostitute. When he wakes up the next morning, his wallet and car key are missing, his girlfriend has been murdered, and he can remember none of the events of the previous night. Called in to investigate is Inspector Espinosa, veteran detective and friend of the ex-cop. It's a seemingly open-and-shut case, but Espinosa is convinced there's more here than meets the eye, and when other bodies begin turning up, he finds himself not only racing after a killer but falling in love. The first Espinosa mystery, The Silence of the Rain, won over American audiences with its steamy evocation of exotic Rio de Janeiro, its singular narrative approach, and, above all, its highly appealing protagonist. In December Heat, the second in this atmospheric, erotic series, Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza once again delivers a story as unusual as it is complex, with a resolution sure to elude-and ultimately delight-even the most discerning crime readers.
Customer Reviews:
Intriguing and worth a second read!.......2007-01-17
The prose is delightful, sensuous, and enticing. The attention to detail and nuance is captivating and yet never bogs you down. The author's intimate knowledge of his homeland allows non-Brazilian readers a glimpse into a complicated and unique world. Characters are often ambiguous -- you don't really know for sure if you should love or hate them. Garcia-Roza does not give the reader any more information than his characters are privy to. The reader is not privileged at all and can thus just go along for the ride. There are twists and turns and even experienced sleuths will be kept guessing about many things until the very end. I am glad I found Inspector Espinosa and look forward to investigating his other adventures.
Brilliant.......2004-11-24
Garcia-Roza has established himself as one of the most exciting authors of mystery novels in contemporary Brazilian literature. This book, originally entitled "Achados e Perdidos", is a testament to his good reputation. From the first page, the reader is drawn into to an all-too-real universe set in the city of Rio de Janeiro without any hope of exit before the final sentence in the book. The story starts with an intoxicated, retired policeman losing his wallet during an outing with his girlfriend, who happens to be a prostitute. The wallet is immediately picked up by a street boy, who from that point on is catapulted into a sequence of events that spirals out of control. The next morning, the girlfriend is found dead, tied to her own bed, and in the scene of the crime the ex-policeman's belt is found. Progressively, more and more unlikely participants slowly get pulled into a tight web where timelines, opportunities, and motives converge and diverge, at the same time. The prose is stylish and deep, and the story never stops surprising. All in all, an excellent book. (These comments apply to the original in the Portuguese language.)
A Trip to Rio.......2004-10-14
Although I probably will never travel to Rio de Janero, Garcia-Roza makes me feel as if I have been there. His sensual descriptions of the city and its people bring the city to life. The plight of the inner life of a street boy is poignantly realized, recalling the tragedy that unfolded in this year's fine documentary, Bus 174, which was more about the desperation of what it means to be a product of the streets, a sadly common phenomenon of Rio. Espinosa, Garcia-Roza's protagonist, is reminiscent of Inspector Montalbano in Andrea Camilleri's Sicillian series. Both have the same time worn quality, both love their food -- there are very sensuous descriptions of their meals, sometimes hilarious (as in Espinosa's consumption of a Big Mac on the Copacabana), but they both end up with answers to their puzzles and will hopefully expand on their experiences to us, their USA-bound fans.
Customer Reviews:
A great book despite shortcomings.......2003-07-04
The Wraeththu are the new supreme race. Makind's time is over and what takes there place is an improved version of humanity. Set in a fictional world that resonates with a warning of what may happen to mankind if we continue along our path; this book serves as entertainment as well as a warning.
Let's start with the weaknesses of this book because there are plenty of them. The first is the aimless narrative of the story. Much of the book follows two characters that wonder from place to place in an obtuse search for knowledge and the Wraeththu version of Zion. As a corollary to this problem there are whole pages that are dedicated to the philosophical ramblings of the narrator that do nothing to further the plot. But with all these shortcomings the author succeeds in creating a very good book.
What makes this book great is the characters. This new race that the author has defined is all we want to be. They are strong, smart, sensual, and near immortal. With an exacting elegance the author portrays this new race as the epitome of humanity, what mankind could have achieved but failed to do.
I feel that this book is a success despite some strange choices the author made. The choice I question most is the fact that this new race is populated solely by mankind's gay males. I feel this stretches the boundary of credibility and dilutes the ideal of the Wraththu, that of a pure sexuality that is not blinded by gender or orientation. Perhaps the author was trying for a political statement, but I feel it is unnecessary.

A great addition to a Diabetic Mommy's library.......2004-07-25
I am the editor and forum host of Diabetic Mommy Online Magazine - http://www.diabeticmommy.com
I just read this book. Those of you that know me from my site, know that I like straight forward and easy to understand books. I don't have a whole lot of time on my hands, and I love to have the answers served up to me that are direct, to the point, thoroughly explained - AND delivered in an entertaining tone.
This little book hit all those marks. I learned some new things too!
The format is totally question and answer. When I first heard that, I thought, Oh no, it's just going to be one question after another, totally unrelated, and I'm going to end up feeling like I'm having a bunch of facts thrown in my face!
It was far from that. It was an interesting read. The book is organized into categories that flow in a logical progression - for instance going from planning to after birth. The tone of the book is friendly and positive.
I found a lot of the same questions in the book that I find in my forum. So, it does a pretty good job predicting what issues a Diabetic Mommy might need more info on.
There are also plenty of charts and small lists for easy reference.
This system doesn't allow you to give 1/2 stars, and in the review on my site, I gave it 4-1/2 stars. I didn't feel marking 4 stars here would do the book justice so I marked 5.
The reason why I didn't give it all 5 stars is because I did not feel the glossary was complete. In a format like this, it's hard to go back and find information you want to re-read. It's hard to remember where it was when many of the questions deal with the same basic subjects. It's a small enough book and it's easy enough to find what you are looking for, but it would be a whole lot easier if there were more in the glossary.
I was debating on throwing this in, but decided to go ahead. This is a perfect "bathroom" book. You can reread it or flip through it to refresh your memory often. It's also light enough and entertaining enough for other members of the family to flip through when they encounter it. I would recommend this one being in a Diabetic Mommy's collection.

My Favorite Book for Pregnant Women.......2004-07-05
I keep this book on my desk and show it to every pregnant woman that I counsel. It is full of practical information that is clear and easy to understand. My patients tell me that this book answers most of their questions. I highly recommend it.
Skip it-better books out there.......2004-04-05
I was very disappointed in this book. I bought 3 books when I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes & this one cost the most & it was the least helpful. I didn't like the questions & answer format of this book. I wanted facts & advice, not corny questions & answers. Alot of fluff. I recomend Managing your Gestational Diabetes by Lois Jovanovic-Peterson MD instead.
101 Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy with Diabetes.......2003-10-28
Recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes, this book was extremely helpful and informative. It answered all of the questions I had about the condition and how it was affecting my pregnancy in an easy to understand format.
I showed this book to my dietician - she was so impressed, she is ordering several for her office.

Customer Reviews:
Completely unique, information not readily found elsewhere!.......1999-02-03
The Dracula Cookbook of Blood is the most deliciously unusual book ever published. It is a cookbook for Vampires! Apparently there were two other Vampire cookbooks on the market. One of regular recipes that use stuff such as ³brontosaurus lard² that is butter, and so forth. This may be cute for the white light and pink cotton candy chef. The other is The Dark Shadows Cookbook, favorite recipes of the cast -- fine for film collectors. THIS book, however, is unique. All the recipes contain BLOOD! I agree with the authors a real Vampire would want a real blood cookbook. The recipes are from around the world and from all of our ancestors. They are all authentic recipes. It would seem all indigenous peoples used blood in cooking at one time or another. This book relates the history of blood cooking, along with nutritional and safe cooking procedures, as well as where you can always count on buying blood. It even tells how to take out bloodstains. The book is divided into breakfast, lunch, between meal snacks, main dishes and desserts. Some of the recipes include blood pancakes from Finland, meat stew from Ghana and turtle from the Ozarks. The authors even included three real bat recipes in an appendix just because they could not resist. A bundle of very obscure Vampire lore is interspersed with the recipes. One example is a Hungarian Farkaskoldus. This is a Vampire who when dying takes on the aspect of a werewolf. Another is a Rocky Mountain Vampire with a long flexible snout similar to an anteater and it uses this to suck out the brain through the ear of a sleeping victim. The book is set up so you the reader actually arrive at the castle where the master finds you and introduces you to Rodika, the head of kitchens. She then takes you on a tour the kitchens and that is where you find all the odd and fascinating bits of blood lore. Did you know when the Mongols went on long journeys they would drink the blood from their horses as nourishment? Each individual had a string of eighteen horses and would take a little over half a pint from the vein of a horse daily. This little bit compared to the horse's body weight did not affect the horse and sustained the journeyer. This book is thoroughly enjoyable from the very beginning to the blood-thirsty end.

Very Good.......2007-08-15
I found the book to be beautiful. Many photos, items with valuations. Many Little Red Riding Hood items
The Collector's Ultimate Encyclopedia of Hull Pottery.......2007-02-25
I've just begun collecting pottery and basically didn't have a clue to what I was doing. I've purchased three different kind of encyclopedia books for pottery and the Hull Pottery I would have to pick as the best for details, pictures and prices.
Must have!.......2006-03-12
This is the best most comprehensive book I have seen. I love it!
Book Description
Hundreds of pieces of Hull pottery in full color, complete descriptions of 116 lines with dates of manufacture, and an in-depth history of the pottery make this the most essential book for Hull collectors. 2003 values. REVIEW: A detailed history of Addis Emmet Hull, founder of the Hull Pottery company, is provided in this book, along with a chronological development of the company, including its contract with Shulton, the plant's flood and fire, and the resulting new plant, leadership, and lines. This book has been a standard among collectors since 1980.

great book .......2007-03-06
this book tells you all you need to know about hull pottery
The Collector's Encyclopedia of Hull Pottery(B Roberts).......2004-01-10
Though a fairly thorough bibliography of the Hull Pottery organization, this book is way too old(circa 1980!) to accurately depict today's collector market. Perhaps a collector's item now in itself, this book is in dire need of updating and revision. Referring to this edition as an "Encyclopedia" is an insult to readers and collector's alike. It also makes no mention of the extremely popular Marcrest "Daisy and Dot" line, for which I had hoped to find
a complete product listing. I believe Jeff Snyder's "Decades of Design" publication will provide me with this important information.
Good book!.......2002-11-07
I am a dealer so I use this book for pricing, but whether a dealer or collector this is a good book. Plenty of photos, price guide is right on the mark. I am satisfied with it.
VERY POOR PHOTOGRAPHY ON THE PASTEL ITEMS..........2002-03-10
I BOUGHT THE BOOK TO IDENTIFY THE HULL VASES WHICH I'VE COLLECTED OVER THE YEARS, BUT I WAS REALLY DISAPPOINTED WHEN I OPENED THIS BOOK. MANY OF THE ITEMS WERE ALMOST UNIDENTIFIABLE, DUE TO WASHED OUT PHOTOS OF THE PASTEL ITEMS - AND THE PASTELS ARE THE ONLY HULL ITEMS WHICH I OWN. I WAS HARD-PRESSED TO BE ABLE TO TELL WHAT I WAS LOOKING AT. THE YELLOWS, PINKS, GREENS AND LIGHT BLUES ARE SO PALE, AS TO NOT BE ABLE TO TELL WHERE ONE COLOR ENDS AND THE OTHER BEGINS. IN MANY PHOTOS, THERE IS ALMOST AN ABSENCE OF COLOR - EVERYTHING IS JUST A BLUR. IF IT HADN'T BEEN FOR THE NUMBERS ON THE BOTTOMS OF THE VASES I OWN, I'D NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIND THEM - CERTAINLY NOT BY THE PICTURES. REALLY POOR EDITING. THOSE PHOTOS SHOULD HAVE BEEN REJECTED AND RE-DONE.
Book helpful, but hardly definitive.......2001-05-09
If I could purchase only one Hull reference it would be Jeffrey Snyder's Hull Pottery: Decades of Design. The Roberts book uses color photos that look they were taken in the 1950's and in at least one case I was unable to ID a piece because of the graniness of the photo. She does include some pieces Synder's book does not and vice versa. I have found using one book to supplement the other the best bet.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Presentation, User-Friendly Pattermaking!.......2006-08-10
I have been drafting patterns for years and have read many patternmaking books, from the usual books found at public libraries to the expensive, comprehensive pattern-drafting textbooks. Many books offer the instruction needed to draft an effective, well-fitting pattern. However, many are very costly, dry, technically focused with little to offer for readability, photos, and enjoyablity. Make Your Own Patterns: An Easy Step-by-Step Guide to Making Over 60 Patterns, is a wonderful blend of affordability, how-to drafting skill, clear, easy instruction, and a pleasing format and layout that makes for optimum user-friendly use, particularly for someone new to making their own patterns.
Rene Bergh takes you through understanding and taking your measurements, then step-by-step through how these measurements create a two-dimensional pattern to fit a three-dimensional form. Hands-on patternmaking occurs as you create your own "sloper" or pattern shell custom fit to you! You then use these basic pattern pieces to create almost limitless designs and styles all to your own preference and liking. Bergh presents dozens of examples with clear step-by-step instructions on how to duplicate the design technique with your own basic pattern sloper you made. She includes full-color drawings or photos that illustrate the finished design, as well as the technical diagrams to accompany the step-by-step instruction, when needed. It all combines for a readable book with concepts that are clear and easy to duplicate.
Sewing experience would be recommended for this book, as well as familiarity and comfort with various types of clothing patterns. You do not need to be an expert in the least, however, and even if you have only sewn with commercial patterns and never made a pattern or adjustment of your own, you could be well on your way to creating your own special style with this book. I am not plus-sized and fit a standard pattern size, however, I have used this book's techniques to create dozens of patterns for plus size friends and relatives of all types and curves. They have all turned out beautifully with an excellent fit. Infact, when drafting specifically for a plus size friend, this is my preferred book to reference, or when drafting for myself. This is also a fun reference book to flip through when you're looking for a new idea or inspiration to add a special touch to your sewing.
Even if you have no interest in making a custom fit and drafted pattern, this book could be invaluable for how to make basic and varied design changes to a regular commercial pattern you found at a fabric store. You could browse the fabric store pattern catalogs knowing that you can pick and choose patterns that fit your basic liking and change the details for your own style and taste! Or you could say, "I'll just make my own!" Enjoy!
Fantastic addition!.......2006-07-13
I just got this book and read through it, and I have to say I am very pleased! I haven't made anything from it yet, but the instructions are very clear. The only things I disliked were the clothes they made for the model in the pictures are hideous, also I didn't see any drawings or instructions for working on the BACK of a bodice. The drawings are very good. I love that it comes with quarter-sized pattern peices in the back which you can size up and adjust to fit you if you decide not to make your own from the step by step guide to a basic bodice she gives you.
not written for the people who need it most.......2001-12-29
Patterns are so easy to find nowadays for $1.99 (or at the very least, at half price), that only those with fitting difficulties would want to draft from scratch, and this book assumes that the user has the perfect, very young figure. I am quite experienced at both alterations and drafting from body measurements, and I can tell you that the thing which is most overlooked is that the greatest variation in the body is from the side view, while her waist and hip values assumes half of each measurement falls in the front and half falls in the back of the body, which is true for almost no one who is not on the cast of "Friends." If you have fitting problems sufficient to drive you to want to make your own patterns, this book will do nothing for you, whether you have a large or drooping bust, large derriere, low abdomen, flabby upper arms, etc. I personally prefer "Boddymapping" by Kathy Illian, "Fantastic Fit for Every Body" by Gale Grigg Hazen, or even "Every Sewer's Guide to the Perfect Fit" by Mary Morris & Sally McCann. A to-die-for pattern-making book (although it does not cover fitting) is "Make Your Own Patterns" by Adele Margolis. It is not flashy, but the wealth of information is breathtaking and inspiring. If you want to be avant-garde, then "Make Your Own Japanese Clothes" by John Marshall is a super little book.
A real help is an actual mold of your body (neither difficult nor expensive to do, and a hysterically funny weekend project for two sewing friends), as described in "My Twin Dress Form" by Carol Stith. I don't know if it is still in print, but it is the absolute best way to produce a proper sewing mannequin. No matter what your figure characteristics, you can produce pretty good results if you have an accurate model to drape on.
I have a number of books intended for the professional that are too expensive to recommend, but if you want to be *really* chic, the absolute best of the best is "Modern Pattern Design" by Harriet Pepin. This gem is a Funk & Wagnalls Company publication from 1942, and it is utterly delightful. Many of the techniques are within the range of anyone even slightly willing to try something new, and they are so old that they are new again. You don't even have to draft a pattern from scratch (although detailed directions are given if you wish to do so) to apply some of the details. If you love the clothes in old movies, this book has more than pictures; it has details on how to produce them.
I would recommend any of the above books over this one.
Easy to understand, accurate, and illustrative.......2001-11-19
This book is great for those who would rather prefer to make their own patterns and design their own outfits. The photos make following the directions easy and the explanations are perfectly understandable. What a great book!
Excellent for modifying basic patterns.......2000-07-17
This book starts out immediately with drafting a fitted bodice, which is remarkably easy and accurate. It goes on to illustrate how to draft basic bodices, skirts and pants, and how to modify them with design features. It is not in anyway a textbook on pattern drafting and does not go into any detail regarding pivoting darts, determining ease or fitting specific figures. It is more a starting point for designing independantly and could well be used in conjuction with an existing sloper or basic commercial pattern.

Inspiring:.......2004-12-31
As an Architect always in search of refreshing ideas I was truly pleased when I first reviewed this book. All architects should be familiar with Voysey's career and work. Next to my monograph of Mellor Meigs and Howe I can think of no more favorite book that I have purchased this past year. Voysey was a forerunner of the modern movement, a true innovator and artist.

Book Description
For Georgian Britain, caricatures and cartoons occupied the place of today¹s popular press and television, recording the flow of events, moods, and fashions. In Scenes from Georgian Life, the author focuses on 25 of these images, tracing the stories behind them—the activities of the rich and famous, the perils of the latest fashions, traffic jams, scientific fads—does it all sound familiar?

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful memories from a genuine Elvis girl.......2006-03-31
Wow, this book actually blows away most other tell alls by former Elvis lovers.
June Juanico retells her precious memories of time spent with The King in utter beauty & vidid detail.
You can tell these two had a very special relationship.
Great read & highly recommended.
A most beautiful book.......2006-02-11
The title says it all. The time captures Elvis before and while he was capturing more and more fame. As with the DVD, it has humor and sadness. Beautifully written. I love the book and the DVD.
Takes you back in time.......2005-06-20
I could not put this book down, I was just taken back in time to those carefree days of being a teenager. You get to know about Elvis' mother and what kind of normal life they tried to lead. I feel that Elvis would have been more stable if June married him. She seemed to stand up to him. But it takes a lot to share a man with so many other women. She made a choice, and stuck with it.
Excellant.......2005-05-17
This book is a fabulous book to read, it lets us see Elvis in his prime before his career really took over his life. I definitely think that if they carried on dating it could have led to June been Mrs Presley. However i understand completely why she did it. She was in love and so by the way she's written about it and so was he. It's a shame this romance didnt last but obviously she had to move on because the man she loved was becoming basically public property.
