The fierce invalid in Tom Robbins's seventh novel is a philosophical, hedonistic U.S. operative very loosely inspired by a friend of the author. "Sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll are enormously popular in the CIA," claims Switters. "Not with all the agents in the field, but with the good ones, the brightest and the best." Switters isn't really an invalid, but during his first mission (to set free his ornery grandma's parrot, Sailor, in the Amazon jungle), he gets zapped by a spell cast by a "misshapen shaman" of the Kandakandero tribe named End of Time. The shaman is reminiscent of Carlos Castaneda's giggly guru, but his head is pyramid-shaped. In return for a mind-bending trip into cosmic truth--"the Hallways of Always"--Switters must not let his foot touch the earth, or he'll die.

Not that a little death threat can slow him down. Switters simply hops into a wheelchair and rolls off to further footloose adventures, occasionally switching to stilts. For a Robbins hero, to be just a bit high, not earthbound, facilitates enlightenment. He bops from Peru to Seattle, where he's beguiled by the Art Girls of the Pike Place Market and his 16-year-old stepsister, and then off to Syria, where he falls in with a pack of renegade nuns bearing names like Mustang Sally and Domino Thirry. Will Switters see Domino tumble and solve the mystery of the Virgin Mary? Can the nuns convince the Pope to favor birth control--to "zonk the zygotic zillions and mitigate the multitudinous milt" and "wrest free from a woman's shoulders the boa of spermatozoa?" Can the author ever resist a shameless pun or a mutant metaphor?

The tangly plot is almost beside the point. Switters is a colorful undercover agent, and a Robbins novel is really a colorful undercover essay celebrating sex and innocence, drugs and a firm wariness of anything that tries to rewire the mind, and Broadway tunes, especially "Send in the Clowns." Some readers will be intensely offended by Switters's yen for youth and idiosyncratic views on vice. But fans will feel that extremism in the pursuit of serious fun is virtue incarnate. Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates is classic Tom Robbins: all smiles, similes, and subversion. --Tim Appelo

Book Description

Switters is a contradiction for all seasons: an anarchist who works for the government; a pacifist who carries a gun; a vegetarian who sops up ham gravy; a cyberwhiz who hates computers; a man who, though obsessed with the preservation of innocence, is aching to deflower his high-school-age stepsister (only to become equally enamored of a nun ten years his senior).

Yet there is nothing remotely wishy-washy about Switters. He doesn't merely pack a pistol. He is a pistol. And as we dog Switters's strangely elevated heels across four continents, in and out of love and danger, discovering in the process the "true" Third Secret of Fatima, we experience Tom Robbins -- that fearless storyteller, spiritual renegade, and verbal break dancer -- at the top of his game.

On one level this is a fast-paced CIA adventure story with comic overtones; on another it's a serious novel of ideas that brings the Big Picture into unexpected focus; but perhaps more than anything else, Fierce Invalids is a sexy celebration of language and life.

5 out of 5 stars I am switters........2007-10-02

I love Tom Robbins and this is my favorite of all his books. In past, many of his protagonists, while all excellent, seem to be more aligned with their feminine sides... Switters is unabashedly male, and I love it. I am Switters and this book is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars mind expanding fiction.......2007-09-21

robbins is a rorscharch test [spelling?]. what you see says a lot about who you are. many people will read 5 pages of this robbins book -- or any -- and throw it to the ground saying "just plain wierd!"

for the rest of us -- admittedly we are an odd bunch -- we can bathe in every dang word, every page, every metaphor that is like rubbing ben gay on your brain. we can laugh out loud at robbin's endless humor, and ponder the many mystical-philosophical curve balls he throws throughout.

who cares if all the loose ends tie together, it doesn't matter. few can entertain, dazzle and make you think with the same abandon as robbins.

5 out of 5 stars great book!!.......2007-08-03

this is honestley one of or the best tom robbins books i have ever read. Robbins is an amazing writer and there are parts in fierce invalids that just make you want to laugh out load. The book is poetry and genious. Robbins has creates this corrupt cia agent that only goes by his last name and somehow you manage to love him and all the crazy things he does and goes through.

THIS IS MY FAVORITE TOM ROBBINS BOOK!

4 out of 5 stars The Tao of Tom Robbins.......2007-05-12

A poet, a philosopher, a polygon, there are many sides to author Tom Robbins. We see this in his earlier novels: In Another Roadside Attraction, he replaces paranoia and cynicism of Catholism, secret societies and conspiracy theories with humor and fun; in Skinny Legs and All, he spins a prosaic punchline around politics, religion, art and sex; in Jitterbug Perfume, we get a colorful allegory that travels over a period of a thousand years and traces the life of Pan, the god of nature, and a bottle of perfume that's the essence of the universe.

In Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates, Robbins again does a remarkable job of pulling in the secrets of history, religion, and anthropology, adding myth, magic and metaphor to present-day events, without being a heavy-handed preacher. The characters aren't as colorfully absurd and outrageously zany as they were in his previous works, but you won't forget them nevertheless. And his zest for language and life is sure poetry; his message is as sinuous and sly as the line in the yin-yang symbol.

Fierce Invalids lays it out for you clearly, faithfully.

        3 out of 5 stars Okay Afternoon.......2006-03-11

I was somewhat disappointed in this book. It really wasn't that exciting and the "sleuth" really doesn't do that much. The character that Augusta is assigned to does most of the work. This character - Mary George - is actually pretty whiny as well. It wasn't a bad read, I just wouldn't read another by the same author based on this book.

4 out of 5 stars Similar to Nick Charles Mysteries.......2004-10-07

This is a refreshing read - similar to the 1940 Nick Charles mystery series - full of real mystery, some murder, plots evolving around family and community characters - and fun --- lots of fun reading due to the appearance of a guardian angel by the name of Augusta Goodnight. You finish reading by wishing Augusta would pay a visit to your life. Augusta makes the story - and leaves the strawberry smell of happiness for days. I am only sorry there are just 4 books so far. Please read - these stories will give you days of pleasure.

        4 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2002-07-23

Mary George Murphy is heartbroken when her last remaining relative dies in mysterious circumstances. When she joins forces with her unusual partner, substitute guardian angel Augusta Goodnight, she is reunited with her childhood friend Sam and solves the murder of her beloved aunt. The strength of this book is the cast of charming characters and cozy setting.

        5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Reading.......2002-05-04

This is an enjoyable story about a woman whose life is upside down. Her fiance has left her, her aunt has died, and her substitute gaurdian angel pops in and out at will. BUT- her aunt's death is suspicious and with the help of her gaurdian angel Mary George Murphy manages to find an old friend, make new friends, and solve the murder of her aunt. Very interesting.

This is a nice little book to cozy up to and enjoy when you need a little chuckle. I enjoyed it.

        4 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable cozy.......2001-10-18

Mary George Murphy's life is a mess. She's lost her job, her fiance', and now her adopted mother Aunt Caroline. Aunt Caroline fell down the attic stairs. Only, she never went up there if she didn't have to. Mary George is in dispair and decides to end it all. She is stopped by her substitute guardian angel, Augusta Goodnight. What an angel, the last time she was on earth it was the forties and she is having a hard time dealing with everything 50 years later, not that she doesn't try. She is usually in charge of the strawberries in heaven. With Augusta's help, she gets her life back on track, reconnects with an old friend, and solves the mystery of her Aunt Caroline's death, as well as a few others.

This was a very sweet cozy, Aunt Dimity's fans should I really like it. I know I did.

Sam and Jacob have been best friends for over forty years. In high school they shared a dream of success in the arts--Sam as a dancer and Jacob as an actor. Sam had to give up his dream; Jacob found some success in theater. His muse led him to California, while Sam remained in New York. Despite the distance, they have only grown closer. They figure they'll be best friends in old age.

But Sam dies unexpectedly. His devastated friend travels back east for the funeral and meets Emilia, Sam's last and greatest love, who inherited Sam's Abyssinian cat, Millamant. United in grief, Jacob and Emilia begin exchanging mail, exchanging memories of Sam. The power of their grief draws Sam back to them--into Millamant's body.

It's a delicate subject. Fantasy, like SF, traditionally deals with subjects by literalizing metaphors; but if you believe this approach is inappropriate for loss, then A Dance for Emilia is probably not the book for you. However, Peter S. Beagle handles the subject as sensitively and skillfully as possible, writing with intelligence, compassion, and fine prose about grief, obsession, and the importance of letting go. --Cynthia Ward

        Book Description

Even lifelong friendships can't outlast death...or can they?

Award-winning author Peter S. Beagle presents a deeply personal story of dreams abandoned and recovered, friends loved and lost, and the strength it takes to let go....

Praise for Peter S. Beagle's novels:

"Peter S. Beagle has both opulence of imagination and mastery of style."-New York Times

"Stunning...Fantasy rarely dances through the imagination in more radiant garb than this." -Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Peter S. Beagle illuminates with his own particular magic."-Ursula K. LeGuin

"Beagle is the class act of fantasy writing."-Booklist

5 out of 5 stars Beagle at his best.......2005-12-31

A splendid mix of reality, fantasy, and hope. This is a very quick read but is still a great story. This is not "another soppy book about a cat" rather, a study of friendship, love and death. This is not your typical fantasy, so those looking for a fanastical adventure may be disappointed with this book as it is not much like The Last Unicorn or Tamsin.

2 out of 5 stars Don't be looking for the magic..........2002-02-28

I disliked this book even more than I disliked Tamsin, which was,
er, a lot. Beagle is a terrific writer insofar as imagination and verve, but this is his second soppy book about cats. Save your money.

        pat chapin

4 out of 5 stars Sorry, it's not THAT good..........2001-03-14

This is a cute, simple little book about two lifelong friends. One of them is an actor, the other is a dancer. The dancer dies and leaves behind his beloved cat and also a girlfriend, Emilia. Emilia comes to visit the actor and the cat. They come to believe the dancer's spirit is in the cat, which speaks to them. And dances, hence the "Dance for Emilia". It's a cute story, but it lacks drama, or the real magic which Peter S. Beagle is known for. Perhaps I'm missing something, but I thought it was just OK. And I'm sorry, I know I'm buying into stereotypes, but the two friends, the actor and dancer, struck me as being gay. The girlfriend didn't ring true. Mr. Beagle should have gone ahead and portrayed the friends in their true light, but perhaps if they were gay the book wouldn't sell as well. And of course it would have been a whole different book! (No cute little "adventures" between the dancer and Emilia. In fact, no Emilia. Emil, maybe?) The cover is beautiful, and it looks like a nice gift book to give someone who is grieving.

5 out of 5 stars A simple, warm story of grief and recovery.......2001-01-10

The loss of a mutual friend enables two very different individuals to join in shared grief - a process which brings the friend's spirit back to life in the form of his beloved cat. They discover they are holding his spirit captive on Earth - but how can they let it go? A simple, warm story of grief and recovery.

        5 out of 5 stars A Rare Gem From A Rare Author.......2001-01-02

In the few pages of this slim volume, Peter Beagle says more about life, death and afterlife than many entire religious cannons. What's more, it is done with such style and grace, you may not realize the message until you begin telling someone else about the book. Even athiests will find a message here.

While the book lacks the substance of some earlier works, like "A Fine and Private Place" or "The Last Unicorn", it carries itslef like a Zen brush painting: a few brush strokes reveal an entire landscape. What's more, the strokes lead us into interpreting what we see. Peter Beagle's dialog between the characters are the brushstokes we will be lead to interpret into the scenes he verbally paints. We are shown just enough of the characters to identify each one, yet each reader will form a slightly different overall picture of the characters and events.

Even without looking deeply into the lines, the book is well developed and complete. The story of a shared friendship is well told and exemplary in it's own right. Many loquacious writers could take a lesson from the author in how to convey an idea without overwhelming the reader with words.

If you have ever lost someone close, there is a message here for you.

A wonderful book to read if you want to gain a deeper understanding to the work and place of Casa de Dom Inacio.

          5 out of 5 stars A must read book!.......2005-11-21

I absolutely loved this book. Emma Bragdon is a gifted writer. In her book, "Spiritual Alliances", she takes one on a journey to a world far removed from that which most of us westerners have been taught.

Emma shows us in very understandable language both who John of God is and what and how he does what he does. She explains the basic principles of Spiritism, the history, how the mediums work. She includes personal stories of people who have received the miracle of healing and also of physicians who have changed the way they practice because of what they witnessed.

This is a book for anyone who wants to go to Abadiania. Or, for anyone interested in what its all about. It teaches us to be receptive to the exploration of nontraditional methods of treatment, particularly in situations in which our present science has little to offer.

Oh, and for those interested in learning more about Spiritism, I heartily recommend her second book, "Kardec's Spiritism: A Home for Healing and Spiritual Evolution".

Thank you, Emma, for your meticulous research and for presenting it in a way which was fascinating and easy to understand. You helped prepare me for the miracle I found on my visit to Brazil and John of God.

          5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Alliances.......2004-04-28

This is such an important book for those of us who are not doctors or healers but are people who are seekers of health and happiness. Ms. Bragdon has done a masterful job of explaining the unexplainable and making available to us, mystical explanations that are grounded in language that we can understand. The format is helpful to step right into issues that would bring a reader to the book in the first place and the descriptions of the life at the Casa are wonderful. It is a book that brings hope and caring into a world that is begging for real healing.

5 out of 5 stars A Clear Eyed Report of Extraordinary Events.......2004-02-01

As someone with a longtime interest in alternative medicine and healing practices, I loved this book. Spiritual Alliances offers a clear-eyed report of extraordinary events at the Casa de Dom Inacio in Brazil, where dramatic healings are taking place, apparently through the intervention of spiritual entities who are either channeled by a man called Joao de Deus, or presencing directly in special group healing rooms.

Bearing witness to the events taking place at "The Casa", Spiritual Alliances powerfully suggests that there is profound healing support available from the spiritual dimension, and that this phenomenon may not be limited to special places like The Casa.

I appreciate author Emma Bragdon's impactful, yet non-polarizing look at the shortcomings of Western Medicine. I loved the interviews with Western medical types who came to observe, learn and be transformed by what they witnessed and experienced for themselves at The Casa. I was moved and inspired by the stories of people who came to the Casa and were healed, not only physically, but in their hearts, minds and spirits.

This book offers an inspiring gateway to the possibility that neither illness nor the process of healing are what we have been programmed to believe they are. Inherent in the book is Emma's deeply felt vision for how this gateway could potentially transform Western medicine and its practitioners, to the benefit of both patients and doctors.

I so appreciate Emma's evenhanded work in writing this book. She is clearly awed and inspired by what she has witnessed and experienced at the Casa, yet never ventures into "true believer" territory. Spiritual Alliances richly blends Emma's mastery as witness and reporter with her deeply human response to an extraordinary place in our world.

5 out of 5 stars Testimonies of those touched by spiritual healing.......2004-01-13

Spiritual Alliances: Discovering The Roots Of Health At The Casa De Dom Inacio by psychologist and alternative medicine expert Emma Bragdon looks at the spiritual healing work of Joao de Deus (John of God), who has applied his talent to people with AIDS, cancer, and physical and emotional problems of all kinds. His healing center, the Casa de Dom Inacio de Loyola, welcomes people of all faiths and expects no payment for Joao's aid. Highly recommended to students of metaphysics, spirituality, and alternative medicine, Spiritual Alliances explores the daily happenings at the Casa de Dom Inacio, and presents stirring testimonies of those who have been touched by spiritual healing.

          5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!.......2006-04-06

This book is not only beautiful to look at but has exceptional recipies that are absolutely delicious! The illustrations by David McCall Johnston are truly an appreciation of art in the modern kitchen!

The Buffalo Cookbook was written "ahead of it's time" as food choices that were filled with high fat content seemed acceptable in the past. The low fat solution to eating red meat is a delightful change that teaches us how to maintain great taste while making wise choices.

This book is a very valuable resource! I would like to see it used as a reference in every medical office where maintaining good health is an issue. I treasure my copy!

Very outstanding work Ruth Mossok Johnston!

          5 out of 5 stars Heart-healthy Red Meat Cooking.......2005-11-16

The Buffalo Cookbook is an amazing collection of recipes that pays tribute to a healthy alternative to red meat.Written ten years ago, ahead of its time, the recipes offer dozens of easily prepared dishes, many of which use the readily available ground buffalo meat. In addition to enjoying delicious food, the cook has an oppportunity to try new ingredients. Happily, a caloric chart is also included. Add to all that the gorgeously illustrated cover and tantalizing photographs and you have a cookbook for the ages.

5 out of 5 stars Gourmet recipes for very healthy meat.......2005-09-21

I cannot disagree more with the previous reviewer. I've found this book to be a wonderful addition to my collection. I have made many of the recipes in the book and can attest to their excellent results. While some of the ingredients might be difficult to find in rural areas, any decent sized city with a well-stocked grocery store should have most everything listed in the book. We've especially enjoyed the Ziti tapenade-chevre, Pesto Pasta with grilled buffalo sausage and the Four roasted pepper, bean and shredded bison burrito grande (the only way I make burritos now).

1 out of 5 stars Very exotic ingredients, hard to find and no subs listed.......1999-02-12

The recipes require exotic and hard to locate ingredients. There is an ingredient list in the back of the book to order items but they are costly, no substitutes are listed. We have a half of Buffalo in our freezer and having had this book for over 12 months have yet to use a recipe from it. It is not a very useful cookbook.

          5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guide.......2005-02-24

This wonderful guide to vintage textiles was obviously written by someone with a vast knowledge of the subject. The numerous photos depict the textiles up close and personal with the majority being black and white. Overall, this guide is more suitable for general reference than pleasure, though without a doubt it is a joy to read. This is the perfect companion for flea market vendors or anyone buying or selling vintage textiles. Though I have many books on the subject, this is one book that I reach for time and again.

          4 out of 5 stars Good information.......2004-06-30

I liked this book a lot - good information and reasonable guidelines. If you are looking mostly for quilting pricing though I personally think that Stella Rubin's book is a better general guide.

5 out of 5 stars Complete Guide to Vintage Textiles.......2000-10-26

How can one 250 page book be so packed with information? Part I of the book is a concise guide to natural fibers, fabric construction, and fabric embellishments. Most of the topics in this section are 1-3 pages in length and are divided into "how to recognize", "features to note", and "where it is used". Part II is devoted to "Things" as in Vintage Fashion, Home Furnishings, and Fabrics of Society. There are 28 chapters on individual items such as aprons, bridal veils, paisley shawls, handkerchiefs, quilts, etc. Most are several pages in length and divided in "checklist" and "pieces and prices". While pricing information is accurate and detailed, information on identification and evaluation is extensive. I would give this book high ratings.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference book for the novice collector/seller.......2000-04-29

This book was obviously written by an expert. Everypage contains close up photos of fabrics so you can really see the texture. Includes Terms, conditions, identification, some values, etc. of lace, quilts, clothes, flags, linens, hats, etc... Very extensive. This is great for ebay sellers who need help identifying and describing vintage textile stock. However, most of the photos are black and white so it is more educational than entertainment. All-in-all, a great book.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference for wood types.......2006-04-04

This book is one of the few on the market that gives a comprehensive breakdown of the different qualities of wood and plywood available.

The clear figures and inventory of techniques that included definitions of highly specialized terms enabled me, a novice, to communicate with experienced woodworkers. Now I'm confident arriving at the lumber yard, because I have already considered exactly the right product I need for the project at hand.

4 out of 5 stars Good design and project book for experienced craftsman.......2006-01-24

This is not a book for novices, and that is the appeal here. No slap-dash weekend projects, this book is slim and does give all of the instructions needed. There's enough information to guide the motivated handy-person through built-in furniture making or room reconstruction. The book is not for the meek, but those equipped with decent tools and patience.

2 out of 5 stars No Use for carpentry.......2000-03-30

The book is just a bunch of pretty photographs. No how-to or what materials/how much to buy. Mainly for interior decorators.

                Product Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for wood household den, family room, library, and living room cabinets, desks, bookcases, bookshelves, credenzas, and wall units excluding custom units sold at retail directly to the customer across the states, union territories and cities of India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 5,000 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for wood household den, family room, library, and living room cabinets, desks, bookcases, bookshelves, credenzas, and wall units excluding custom units sold at retail directly to the customer. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                    Product Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for wood household den, family room, library, and living room cabinets, desks, bookcases, bookshelves, credenzas, and wall units excluding custom units sold at retail directly to the customer across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for wood household den, family room, library, and living room cabinets, desks, bookcases, bookshelves, credenzas, and wall units excluding custom units sold at retail directly to the customer. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. Book Description

John Lahr--New Yorker critic, novelist, and biographer of his father Bert Lahr (Notes on a Cowardly Lion)--reconstructs both the life and death of Joe Orton in another extraordinary biography that was chosen Book of the Year by Truman Capote and Nobel Prize-winning novelist Patrick White when it first appeared in 1978.
"I have high hopes of dying in my prime," Joe Orton confided to his diary in July, 1967. Less than one month later, Britain's most promising comic playwright was murdered by his lover in the London flat they had shared for fifteen years. Lahr chronicles Orton's working-class childhood and stagestruck adolescence, the scandals and disasters of his early professional years, and the brief, glittering success of his blistering comedies, Entertaining Mr. Sloane, Loot, and What the Butler Saw.
Prick Up Your Ears is a watershed biography; it paved the way for Orton's revival and ensured his rightful place in the English repertoire.

                                  1 out of 5 stars Extreme Boredom!.......2004-06-07

This is the worst "biography" I've ever read. So much that it took me more than a year to complete.

It's just a succession of VERY long-winded, very boring critiques of each of the writer's plays. Biographical facts are only half-heartedly tacked on at the start, and reading them I came to find out that I didn't even like Orton and his "friend" and felt they got the exact fates they deserved.

This book was so stagnant and such a frustrating read that I actually began to hate the author! I wish I had NEVER ordered it.

4 out of 5 stars Lahr captures a true original........2004-04-20

Joe Orton was an original, no getting around it. His plays, especially "Entertaining Mr. Sloan," "Loot" and "What the Butler Saw" are considered classics of the blackest form of comedy. He enjoyed shocking people, while always maintaining that his characters and the situations he places them in were grounded in reality.

This is a theatrical bio as bold and brash as its subject. Lahr has done a thorough job of exposing this most controversial of playwrights. Joe was a sexual compulsive, an in-your-face homosexual who enjoyed sex with strangers in public places. He also loved to brag about his exploits, never skimping on a detail.

Just when "things" were finally coming together for Orton professionally, things were beginning to unravel for his companion Kenneth Halliwell, who brutally murdered Orton in August 1967. Some would say his rude death befit how he lived the rest of his life. I think that would be judging Joe too harshly. Perhaps he would have been a flash-in-the-pan or as lasting and popular as Stoppard. We'll never know. That's the tragedy. Good job Lahr.

I love a good biography, and this one is GREAT! John Lahr writes brisk, delighfully breezy, and information-saturated biographies. He has another great one of his Father - Bert Lahr - the cowardly lion in Wizard of Oz. "Prick up your Ears"...is a page turner that kept me riveted as I came to an appreciation of the latter 60's London gay scene, and the Svengali/Frankenstein-like relationship between Orton and his 16-year lover, Ken Halliwell. Halliwell brutally murdered Orton in a frenzy of jealously and sheer madness in 1967, at Orton's peak of fame. I knew nothing of Joe Orton or his plays until I caught the last hour of the movie by the same title on BBC America last month, which starred Gary Oldman. The book is much better than the movie, in that it gives you all the "behind-the-scenes" information the movie does not have time to elaborate upon. Lahr treats Orton's horrible sex-addiction sensitively, and illustrates the magnitude of his genius and vision in a very articulate manner. Though Halliwell's murder/suicide was tragic for both men, Lahr helps the reader understand the reasons which lead to his fatal mistake, without excusing it by tapping the support of many of their old friends, living family, and aquaintences. Who knows, if only Orton had acknowledged Halliwell's contributions to his work, perhaps they'd both be with us today...

3 out of 5 stars Strong Start... fizzles out.......2003-01-30

This biography indeed has a powerful, engaging start as it first presents the murder of Joe Orton and the causes that lead to it, then goes back to explore his bleak upbringing and the fascinating pre-published period he spent with his companion (they were trying to avoid work at all costs while writing much-rejected fiction and mutilating library books). However, once Lahr begins covering Joe The Playwright, the book frankly gets slow, boring, and exhaustive. The biography turns into a literary criticism, as Lahr spends many a page giving his own interpretation and biased opinions on Orton's works. He does this with each and every play. This has no place in the story of his life and should've been put in The Complete Plays where it would've been appropriate.

Lahr also feels the need to cover the drudgery of his subject's professional dealings at a snail's pace. All of this is somewhat understandable, since Lahr admitted in the foreword that informaiton on Orton was downright scarce during certain periods, but IMO, he should've just shortened the book as a result because we all know good things come in small packages, less is sometimes more... it's quality not quantity... you get my point.

I recommend this book if only for the first half. Though the movie isn't as rich (as it's pressed for time) it moves along in a satisfying pace and covers all the major events in an OBJECTIVE way. I advise curious people to see the movie, hardcore fans may want to invest in the book.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting biography of a minor playwright........2001-10-24

Prick Up Your Ears is a biography of Joe Orton, who achieved a measure of fame in Britain and the US for his plays such as "What the Butler Saw." Orton, who was gay, got much of his literary education from his lover. The lover, who went from being the dominant person in the relationship to the lesser when Orton became famous, eventually developed such a rage against Orton that he murdered him and then killed himself.

Orton's plays are often funny, but not deep. They depend on the breaking of social and sexual conventions. Now that those conventions have largely been broken anyhow, Orton's plays seem less shocking than they were at the time. Orton liked to be thought of as another Harold Pinter, but somewhat to his horror he found that his admirers included conventional middlebrow playwrights of the day. In fact, Orton's plays do have more in common with the works of these more conventional writer than with Pinter. Perhaps Orton's greatest comic invention were his letters to the editor of various British publications, always written under a false name and always espousing an absurdely conservative point of view. Orton, whether he admitted it or not, needed these conservatives for his plays to work.

Lahr's biography is well researched, and is likely to remain the definitive biography of Orton. Lahr himself has a fluid writing style, and the intelligence to know what to put in and what to leave out. Thus, he avoids swamping the reader with meaningless details as do many American biographers.
