Book Description

From the hearty meals being devoured by peasants on a Bruegel canvas to the lush and lifelike fruits of a trompe l'oeil, food has enjoyed a central place in painting for centuries. These two great sensory pleasures come together in the sumptuously illustrated Food in Painting. Here Kenneth Bendiner journeys from the Renaissance to the present day—through the works of artists from Rembrandt to Manet to Warhol—to make the case that, though understudied, paintings of food are so important that they should be considered a separate classification of art, a genre unto themselves.

Bendiner outlines the history of these paintings, charting changes in both meaning and presentation since the early Renaissance. The sixteenth century saw great innovations in food subjects, but, as Bendiner reveals, it was Dutch food painting of the seventeenth century that created the visual vocabulary still operative today. Alongside paintings that feature food as the central subject, he also considers topics ranging from Renaissance menus to aphrodisiacs to bottled water to the portrayal of dogs at the table—always with an eye towards how the meaning of food imagery is determined by such factors as myth, religion, and social privilege. Bendiner also treats purely symbolic portrayals of food, both as marginal elements in allegorical paintings and as multi-layered sexual references in Surrealist works.

Packed full of images of markets, kitchens, pantries, picnics, and tables groaning under the weight of glorious feasts, Food in Painting serves up a delicious helping of luxuriously painted meals certain to win a spot on the shelves of art lovers and gastronomes alike.

"While in essence it remains a history book of art, Food in Painting never loses sight of the food, the dishes, and the meals. It is a wonderful investigation of how we see food in relation to ourselves: the book celebrates what chefs celebrate in their everyday work..."

Would you rather give blood or read Hamlet? Fight Mike Tyson or talk like him? For fans of juvenile humor, Would You Rather...? is the ne plus ultra of ridiculous dilemmas. Created by toy developer David Gomberg and "functional performance artist" Justin Heimberg, this collection of more than 200 preposterous predicaments covers everything from sex and supernatural powers to utopian worlds and nasty curses. Whether read alone or with a group of friends, Would You Rather...? will have you laughing out loud as you debate the eternal questions of life, like: "Would you rather live in a world where Afros were mandatory for members of Congress or where it was legal, in fact encouraged, to crucify mimes?" --Rebekah Warren

1 out of 5 stars I bought a book like this a few years ago with a pink cover.......2007-05-04

and lost it so I got this one in it's place. The questions are really stupid and you don't care to even answer them. The one I had with the pink covers questions were very thought provoking and morally charged, and you did learn a lot about people by going through the book. This is just random dumbness. I threw away money on this.

1 out of 5 stars Excellent example of the words "salacious" and "vulgar".......2007-03-27

If you happen across a copy of this book, don't let your child look at it. It is entertaining only if you are pleased with language of the "gutter".

1 out of 5 stars You'd rather not buy this.......2006-03-07

This really is not funny or thought-provoking. Dumb examples from pop culture -- way too many. People didn't like it when used recently at a birthday party, and we abandoned it all together in favor of a much funnier, crowd-engaging version of this game: the Zobmondo Book of Outrageous Choices.

5 out of 5 stars When the point isn't to be deep........2005-09-19

I truly enjoyed this book because it allowed me to lighten up about "choices" or "dilemmas" or whatever you want to call them. I understand and appreciate the need for self-evaluation, analysis, curiousity, sharing, and developing. I do, however, sometimes need to not go there.

Many people complain this book didn't have the depth they would have liked. There is no depth, but the point isn't to be deep. I feel like the word "absurd" (used in the description on the COVER) points that out pretty clearly. For what it aims to do, the book does well. This book is a great reminder that *sometimes* all that evaluation/analysis stuff just is too much -- missing the point and ruining the fun of life.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time and Money.......2005-06-09

Not at all funny. I was kind of expecting moral dilemma type questions with a humorous twist, but got Fear Factor type gross-out phrases instead, or just plain absurd phrases with no thought behind them.

I will quote examples from another review, because they sum up the absurdity of 100% of the questions:

"Would you rather eat a pound of raw bacon or take a bath in bile? Would you rather be hole-punched to death or eaten alive? Would you rather have porkchops for earlobes or Magic 8-balls for elbows?"

Let's get real, how long can you "laugh out loud" (as some reviews claim) at any one of these examples? How thought-provoking are they, really?

I chose not to pick up the Doug Fields book "Would You Rather...?" because it's reviews claim it is great for church youth groups, and I am not a religious person. But I think it may be more my style, as I'd prefer to read moral dilemmas than stupid gross-out garbage.

I have come to the conclusion that many of these "Reviewers" must actually be the authors themselves, friends and/or co-workers of the authors, or bookstores trying to get rid of crap no one would actually buy by misleading people with false rave reviews.

A great book for intermediate level players or determined beginners. Won't make you a Master, but you'll still be better than everyone you know.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with Information.......2002-05-25

Reinfeld has truly excelled in this book about checkers. This is the most complete book on checkers you will ever find, in or out of print.

The book covers tactics such as traps and shots and then goes on to cover just about every important opening to at least some degree, often with main-lines and numerous variations. Finally, the section on endings is quite complete; nowhere else can I find the four kings vs. three situation covered.

Whenever I have a question I turn first to this book and almost always find an answer.

Be aware that information is packed tightly into every page and you will need to study each situation carefully, playing through the variations on a second board. For instance, opening variations are often contained in a few lines of commentary; you will lose out if you don't pay attention to these variations. It is clearly not a book for dabblers, but one which requires substantial effort, which will be well rewarded.

This book does not get a lot of attention from the experts, perhaps because Reinfeld's is known primarily as a chess writer. In fact this book is a must-have for serious beginners and intermediates. If you combine this with The Little Giant Encyclopedia of Checker Puzzles you have enough study material for months, and your game will improve rapidly.

(Don't be put off by the cover photo, which is full of errors and serves to trivialize and stereotype the game of checkers. The contents are what matters.)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of topics, let down by typesetting.......2000-04-17

I found this book to be a very good introduction to checkers. It covers, in depth, sacrifices (pitches) to set up two-for-one exchanges, and the "five positions" that most commonly occur in the endgame. The analysis of openings is thorough, and a major plus for me was the section on forcing draws from "losing" positions. Only two things stopped me from ranking this book at 5 stars - the pictures of the boards are just too big, and are sometimes two pages back from where the written analysis takes place. Also some sample historic games would have been nice. The author has used an appendix to describe different versions of checkers around the world and this is, frankly, useless. That space could have been better used by a couple of analysed historic games. Other than these minor peeves, it is an excellent book. I would not hesitate to recommend it to a checkers enthusiast from beginner to intermediate level.

Reinfield's book is a must for the serious checker player. He covers various situations, openings and endgames, and provides the reader situation problems to solve on his/her own. My game was improved by reading this book.

Othello, devised by Hasegawa-san in the 1970s, is an improved version of the century-old English game, Reversi. [What is called Reversi on-line is almost always Othello rather than Reversi].

This book was written soon after Othello was devised, before anyone understood much about the game. Unfortunately it shows, and beginners would do well to avoid it - at least as a source of ideas on strategy and tactics - because it will lead them down a deceptively appealing blind alley.

Because of its many diagrams, however, it is may be of use to those who know enough to recognise where it goes wrong but otherwise I recommend it for historical interest only.

Better resources can be found free on the Web, in the form of strategy guides, illustrative applets and programs that can beat even the best humans. A printed alternative is Othello: Brief & Basic by Ted Landau, which is old but still excellent (as far as it goes).

2 out of 5 stars Goro Hasegawa was the Japanese re-discoverer of Othello.......1999-01-15

Goro Hasegawa was the Japanese rediscoverer of Othello. Originally, the game was known as Reversi. Two rival Englishmen each claimed to have invented the game late 19th century. Hasegawa modified the rules slightly and his father, a Shakespearean scholar game it the name Othello, because the reversals in the game reminded him of the plot of the play. This book is the only widely distributed manual of Othello strategy. Although it may have some value for the collector, unfortunately most Othello players regard the strategies discussed in the book as being obsolete and even misleading. Readers who are interested in the game should look for resources on the Internet.

If author Mary Roach was a college professor, she'd have a zero drop-out rate. That's because when Roach tackles a subject--like the posthumous human body in her previous bestseller, Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, or the soul in the winning Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife--she charges forth with such zeal, humor, and ingenuity that her students (er, readers) feel like they're witnessing the most interesting thing on Earth. Who the heck would skip that? As Roach informs us in her introduction, "This is a book for people who would like very much to believe in a soul and in an afterlife for it to hang around in, but who have trouble accepting these things on faith. It's a giggly, random, utterly earthbound assault on our most ponderous unanswered question." Talk about truth in advertising. With that, Roach grabs us by the wrist and hauls butt to India, England, and various points in between in search of human spiritual ephemera, consulting an earnest bunch of scientists, mystics, psychics, and kooks along the way. It's a heck of a journey and Roach, with one eyebrow mischievously cocked, is a fantastically entertaining tour guide, at once respectful and hilarious, dubious yet probing. And brother, does she bring the facts. Indeed, Spook's myriad footnotes are nearly as riveting as the principal text. To wit: "In reality, an X-ray of the head could not show the brain, because the skull blocks the rays. What appeared to be an X-ray of the folds and convolutions of a human brain inside a skull--an image circulated widely in 1896--was in fact an X-ray of artfully arranged cat intestines." Or this: "Medical treatises were eminently more readable in Sanctorius's day. Medicina statica delved fearlessly into subjects of unprecedented medical eccentricity: 'Cucumbers, how prejudicial,' and the tantalizing 'Leaping, its consequences.' There's even a full-page, near-infomercial-quality plug for something called the Flesh-Brush." While rigid students of theology might take exception to Roach's conclusions (namely, we're just a bag of bones killing time before donning a soil blanket) it's hard to imagine anyone not enjoying this impressively researched and immensely readable book. And since, as Roach suggests, each of us has only one go-round, we might as well waste downtime with something thoroughly fun. --Kim Hughes

                                          Book Description

"Equal parts Groucho Marx and Stephen Jay Gould, both enlightening and entertaining."—Sunday Denver Post & Rocky Mountain News

The best-selling author of Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers now trains her considerable wit and curiosity on the human soul. What happens when we die? Does the light just go out and that's that—the million-year nap? Or will some part of my personality, my me-ness persist? What will that feel like? What will I do all day? Is there a place to plug in my lap-top?" In an attempt to find out, Mary Roach brings her tireless curiosity to bear on an array of contemporary and historical soul-searchers: scientists, schemers, engineers, mediums, all trying to prove (or disprove) that life goes on after we die. She begins the journey in rural India with a reincarnation researcher and ends up in a University of Virginia operating room where cardiologists have installed equipment near the ceiling to study out-of-body near-death experiences. Along the way, she enrolls in an English medium school, gets electromagnetically haunted at a university in Ontario, and visits a Duke University professor with a plan to weigh the consciousness of a leech. Her historical wanderings unearth soul-seeking philosophers who rummaged through cadavers and calves' heads, a North Carolina lawsuit that established legal precedence for ghosts, and the last surviving sample of "ectoplasm" in a Cambridge University archive. 10 illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars "We're ready to believe you".......2007-09-17

I think it was Bill Murray in Ghostbusters who, during one of their commercials, stared into the camera and said, "We're ready to believe you." In Spook, Mary Roach, having already examined dead bodies here on earth in Stiff, turns her attention to one of the oldest of all questions: Is there life after death? The book's subtitle, "Science Tackles the Afterlife," is wide of the mark. The characters between the pages of Spook, with the exception of Thomas Edison, who may have entertained some ideas about connecting to the ancestors via new found electrical capabilities, would not by and large not be recognizeable as scientists today. What you do encounter are two groups of people. One group willing to disbelieve but "prepared to believe" and anxious to demonstrate a life in the hereafter. Another group, represented largely by Mary Roach, who are willing to believe, but reasonably sceptical at the outset. What I was clearly unaware of, until reading Spook, were the sheer variety of mechanisms deployed to ascertain a life in some next phase. Reincarnation, of course, which opens the book, is well-reported, and actually contains some interesting cases, but other areas were new to me. Readers who are unfamiliar with ectoplasmic parties -- I thought Ghostbusters invented it -- and the careful efforts of technicians to determine whether the dead lose weight and to explain that loss by the departure of the soul from the departed will find in Spook an entire underworld of quirky machinations. Actually, one of my favorite passages finds Ms. Roach trying to explain why a particular "researcher" found that the dead actually gain weight immediately upon extinction. That weight gain prompts Roach to speculate that perhaps the portal to the next life is a Dairy Queen drive-through window. In a nutshell, according to Ms. Roach, this is a book for people who want desperately to believe in a life after death, but who have a difficult time accepting that possibility. By the book's conclusion you are not quite sure where Ms. Roach stands and, fortunately, she provides curious readers with a short summary chapter in which she states that, "yes," she would rather believe that not believe, "What the hell, I believe in ghosts." I don't know where Ms. Roach's gifts will next take her, She has written about the "dead," and now also about the attempt to connect with the spirits of the deceased. I'll likely follow. She brings a genuine personal touch to her work and her humor has an infectious quality about it. These are not typically waters into which I'd venture. It is to Mary Roach's credit that I can wade through them and enjoy the experience.

4 out of 5 stars a good overview that doesn't seem to want much depth.......2007-07-23

In her acknowledgements at the end of the book, Mary Roach identifies the mindset that I think makes her books (this and Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers) successful despite the seemingly superficial investigation (accompanied by self-admitted Google searches) of her subject matters: she approaches the use of bodies by science and the attempts to scientifically prove life after death from the perspective of the novice, out to learn a thing or two.

Does this make either of her two books in-depth studies? Of course not, and though her hasty conclusions at the end do her disservice, this book comes across as a pleasant read into some of the oddities involved in the world of paranormal investigation, from tests of random images that would be visible only to out-of-body spirits above the ceiling to mediums who might have second stomachs to let them cough up ectoplasm on command. For this book especially, the subject of psychics and mediums and those who are aching to prove that they are anything more than yahoos is prime material to spotlight some fools and con artists.

Of course, there are some somewhat serious endeavors to try to prove the reality of spiritual visitations, from the possibilities of electromagentism or subaural frequencies on the brain, as well as an interesting look into a legal case that seemed to confirm the possibility that a ghost could have some say over the state of his estate. While the cases in this book were not as in-depth as in Stiff, the previous book was almost scary at times for its depth. Roach seems to be treading an area that doesn't let her win very easily--if she gets into too much depth, her interest may seem a little too morbid (like listening to the head of The Darwin Awards, who seems a little too amused by these particular deaths), but if she moves quickly through some other subjects, she comes across as being a little too glib and quick to move on. As I mentioned before, the regular Google references almost sounds like product placement as well as making her research sound superficial (though it could be worse with regular Wikipedia citations), but Roach's wit and curiosity are what carry this book. She takes a rather natural skepticism, wanting some answers but willing to let people take their best shots, and more often than not they show their bias and need to excuse rather than scientific curiosity. And along the way, Roach gets to amuse with tidbits about people's conception of science and fact and the way they will bend it into something alien when trying to apply it to paranormal activity. While the side of science does not score highly either, mainly because it has been put in the position of trying to prove a negative (that there AREN'T connections being made with the other world), Roach gives some intetresting cases for both sides, and while she works with the idea that certainty is tough to have in this subject matter, she does show that some well deserved cheap shots can be taken at those who take this area a little too seriously.

I was bored with the majority of this book. Every twenty pages or so Mary Roach explores interesting themes but completely exhausts them. Toward the middle of the book (which I felt like I needed to finish) I found myself skimming through and skipping several pages at a time.

Her jokes weren't funny. Her writing was condescending. Her sidenotes gradually became more and more annoying.

The research presented in the book is fun and intriguing. Whether or not you agree with the author's conclusions, you have to love her flippant writing style. I purchased this book because I love her column in Reader's Digest. I certainly was not disappointed. I can't wait to read her first book.

Delivered on all I expected it to be. I learned a little, I groaned a little. A great subway/ airplane read - not for a research paper but will give you something to talk about at your next party. I mean really - Watson thought he had a HALO???

                                                    Book Description

War is a dynamic, evolving, complex phenomenon. This collection of essays by prominent scholars addresses the question of why the results of past studies of militarized interstate conflict have not been more coherent. Based upon a special issue of the journal International Interactions, The Process of War responds to this lack of cumulative knowledge by proposing a process framework. Authoritative essays by leading scholars flesh out this framework by summarizing what we think we know about the process of war. Commentaries by renowned researchers discuss its usefulness as a guide to ordering present knowledge and direct future research. With an extensive bibliography of studies that deal with interstate conflict in a scientific manner, this volume is essential reading for those involved or interested in the study of war.

                                                    Book Description

A time of tumult, your children's transition from high school to college can also be a time of growth. This book shows you how. Almost Grown is a guide for parents to the final years of high school and first years of college, offering intelligent counsel not only in practical issues such as developing a college search plan or handling questions of money, sex, and substance abuse, but also in the psychological issues that arise during this family transition. Writing as both psychologist and parent, Patricia Pasick tackles the key question of how mothers and fathers can foster adolescents' growth and autonomy while maintaining family connections and stability. She also explores the unexpected: the impact of the changing family on younger siblings, the benefits and frustrations of college students' returning home, the challenges and opportunities that nontraditional families face, and more. Pasick delves into another critical yet underplayed aspect of the college transition: how parents' lives change. Almost Grown guides readers through this major step in adult development and new start to adult partnerships. Almost Grown contains advice from high school and college admissions counselors across the country and, at the heart of the book, stories of personal experience from parents and adolescents who are making, or have made, the transition.

5 out of 5 stars How To Restore Sanity to the College Admission Process.......2000-11-04

The college admission process in the US today is THE rite of passage for young people from the comfort and nurture of family, school and friends into the world beyond. Unfortunately, it has all too often become a cruel one, not one that is helpful to the child's growth. All too often parents, grasping for the "brass ring" of a designer label college become overzealous and overly ambitious, beginning the college process way too early and pushing their children so hard that it harms their child and their relationship with their child. As someone who has spent 20 years in college admission and now 4 in college counseling in a highly compeitive school, this book has become the most powerful tool I've found in prodding parents of the need to stay sane and use a more balanced approach in working with their children. I hope to do a reading group with parents in my school using it as the text next year.

                                                    5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......1999-10-13

A heart felt book for anyone whose child is going off to college. I teach at a University and would suggest this book along with "Major in Success", by Patrick Combs. It offers insight to what college students go through as they identify and persue their dream job.

This book describes the stages that a stable loving middle class family goes through in letting go of their college-bound children. Compared to poor or disadvantaged families, focussing on the emotional transitions necessary to let go of a child heading for college is a privileged position, but if you are a middle-class boomer...

I experienced this book as if I were the mother (therapist) who wrote it. I happen to be a therapist and I have three kids 7, 15 and 17. I am devastated, thrilled, overjoyed, proud and overwhelmed by this transition with my firstborn. We are in the thick of it, and I'll be reading and rereading these chapters for the next year, using it for a lifeline when I can't control my emotions. I want to scream for joy that I successfully raised a wonderful person and I want to sob at the cruel pace of time. I am very grateful for the preparation this book is giving me. Lots of practical tips too for the work load around the planning, decision-making, moving, ongoing contact, etc. I highly, highly recommend it.

But what of the xiphias, hackee, zebu, and urubu? In Milder's new volume, you'll encounter these animals and more, presented in the form of a poetic palindrome, with names ranging from A to Z and back, and learn about the habits and idiosyncrasies of these exotic creatures.
