Five Stars For Rob, Bucky, And Satchel.......2006-04-17
"Get Fuzzy" is the current reigning champion of comic strips. Anyone with pets (or who loves animals) can appreciate the inter-species conflicts and hilarity in this comic strip (I particularly enjoy Bucky's attempts at world domination and related ventures.) Here, as in years past, some of the best strips have been put together in calendar form to ensure that everyone can have a bit of humor in their daily lives.
I can't imagine not having this calendar in my house; it's always a great way to start the day. Many of these strips are so good that I have cut them out and saved them or sent them to other animal lovers in my life, while the remaining pages become great for scratch paper.
This is a great calendar and I highly recommend it to anyone.
A great way to start the day.......2006-03-22
This is the second year I have used this as my desk calendar at work. I love it. It makes me laugh all the time and it has just enough room to keep track of dinner dates or appointments.
get Fuzzy.......2006-03-20
Good desk calendar; it's fun to relive some of the classic Get Fuzzy strips.

One of the original best-selling collection of 20 Lake Wobegon monologues. Includes: "Guys on Ice," "The Christmas Story Re-told," and "Storm Home."
Customer Reviews:
CD sent - I wanted a book.......2007-09-20
After seeking out a book by Garrison Keillor a CD was sent out. All of this comes down to confusion on your Keillor page - is it a book or a CD?
Wide Appeal.......2004-07-25
Garrison Keillor writes poignant and often funny stories about small-town, Midwestern life. His works have often been compared to those of Mark Twain, and I can give no greater praise than that, except to say that you need not be a Christian to enjoy his stories about Christmas (I'm not), you need not be a Minnesotan to enjoy his revelations about life in Minnesota (I've never even been there), and you need not be from a small town to relate to the eccentric characters of Lake Wobegone (I'm as urban as they come). So come and visit Lake Wobegon, it's an enchanting, old-fashioned, liberal-making, and distinctly American faeryland where the women are strong, the men are good looking, and the children are always above average.
Classic Keillor.......2002-04-27
I have the cassette collection of all four seasons of News from Lake Wobegon, and have worn them out. Time to buy the CDs! Winter is my favorite. It warms your heart and makes you laugh.
Keillor captures winter as no one else can.......2001-01-27
The five stories in this CD set are all majestic, and they include every aspect of winter one can think of. "Guys on ice" is a rather self-explanatory title, chronicling the thoughts of guys on ice; always interesting. "James Lundeen's Christmas" is the story of a boy who finds Christmas as it is truly meant to be. "Christmas story re-told isn't as magical as it is in the Bible, but Keillor comes as close as one can in his re-telling. "New Year's from New York" details Keillor's appreciation for the event from a child's perspective. "Storm Home" brings to life the things that can make school and home life tolerable. This is a terrific compilation of Keillor's winter work.

A beginners book.......2005-09-23
Very very basic introduction to FCP. Do not be fooled by the word "professional" in the title. It is aimed for complete new comers. As a professional editor I found that the book answered very little to any questions I may had. It is a good beginners book.
good small book.......2005-01-25
Small, concise. Binding and small size doesn't allow you to open it up flat without damaging binding.

Customer Reviews:
A decent book.......2007-03-08
It was inspiring to read and gave me a better view of the Ordo Dracul. It had just enough history and enough about the current workings of the covernant. It really made me want to tell a story with the Ordo Dracul as a main covernant.
An wonderful exploration of an extremely interesting Covenant........2006-09-14
Ordo Dracul provides a detailed presentation of the Covenant of the same name. The Ordo Dracul is similar to a cross between hermetic mages, philosophers, researchers, and Masons all rolled together into one large organization focused on understanding and mastering the vampiric condition. An overview of the history of the Covenant, its beliefs, traditions, factions, government, and other similar information is provided. New Bloodlines, Disciplines, Devotions, and Coils are logically connected to new and existing groups within the Covenant.
The best thing this product has going for it is that the Ordo is interesting. The internal government is unique and fun, the actual ways Covenant members go about studying vampirism are clever (and at times unusual, embracing weird and ancient science), and the factions lurking on the periphery are such that many players will find something of interest. On the downside, the focus on the extremely inhuman deeds that Dragons regularly perform may turn some players off to the product and otherwise shift a campaign's focus away from Humanity and on to vampiric society and science. This isn't a bad thing necessarily, but the Covenant does tend towards murder (in order to engage in social science) and extreme self mutilation (in order to create a new mental state).
Awesome.......2006-04-26
I just recieved this book in the mail today and it is everything the other reviews have said. Just excellenct. The history, the bloodlines, the new coils, all of it.
Great book for the Scientists of the Group.......2006-03-18
The Ordo Dracul book was a great read all around. Gave you a look into those that search for the "Great Works" and life beyond vampirism.
With the new Coils and secretive subsect "Sworns" and new bloodlines, it is a great book. Definately a good read for those just interested in the covenent or wanting to play a Dragon character.
One of the best Covenant books so far.......2006-02-24
The Ordo Dracul, I have to be honest, is my least favorite covenant. Its position as a hermetically sealed organization causes me to cringe, and the thought of spending centuries in Slave status, serving undead monsters who look down on you, is terrifying.
However, that's also some of the appeal of this book. It deliniates the structure of the Ordo Dracul, its purposes, some bloodlines and factions within the covenant, and shows just what makes the Dragons tick.
The terror that a reader of this book SHOULD feel is ever-present as you search through the pages, touching on the various practices of the Dragons, and looking into the eerie bloodlines that the Order has created over the centuries.
This is a great book, well-planned and thorough. I highly recommend it, especially for those who have an interest in the Order itself.

Book Description
The bestselling author of Truman and John Adams, David McCullough has written profiles of exceptional men and women past and present who have not only shaped the course of history or changed how we see the world but whose stories express much that is timeless about the human condition.
Here are Alexander von Humboldt, whose epic explorations of South America surpassed the Lewis and Clark expedition; Harriet Beecher Stowe, "the little woman who made the big war"; Frederic Remington; the extraordinary Louis Agassiz of Harvard; Charles and Anne Lindbergh, and their fellow long-distance pilots Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Beryl Markham; Harry Caudill, the Kentucky lawyer who awakened the nation to the tragedy of Appalachia; and David Plowden, a present-day photographer of vanishing America.
Different as they are from each other, McCullough's subjects have in common a rare vitality and sense of purpose. These are brave companions: to each other, to David McCullough, and to the reader, for with rare storytelling ability McCullough brings us into the times they knew and their very uncommon lives.
Customer Reviews:
Short Pieces by McCullough.......2007-09-02
With this collection of essays, most written in the 1970s and `80s (but one reaching back into the 1950s), David McCullough exhibits both his strengths and (comparative) weaknesses as a writer. Biography is his forte, and his portraits of Humboldt, Agassiz, Remington, and Harriet Beecher Stowe are first-rate, the sort of pieces that should be analogized in high school literature texts as examples of limpid prose in the hand of a master. Likewise, McCullough's condensation of his Great Bridge is a masterpiece of synthesis; and "Glory Days in Medora" is a classic of a fine and fair portrayal of a character (the Marquis de Morès) whom McCullough rightly finds distasteful.
Nevertheless, McCullough drops to the level of good journalism when he interviews living people, sometimes in "National Geographic style" ("A bell at the railroad crossing starts clanging, and Plowden, obviously delighted, tells me, `We're going to have a dividend.'" [177]) I admire McCullough as both a great writer and as a historian whom no jealous academic has yet been able to bring down. But frankly, jeremiads about strip mining and fawning depictions of profane photographers are not his strong suite. I bet he knows that now.
Grand. Heroic. Inspiring. Endearing........2007-08-21
BRAVE COMPANIONS is a leisurely stroll through the life and times of America. Put on your jacket, turn up the collar, grab your favorite walking-stick and set out for a fascinating walk with America's storyteller, David McCullough.
Washington, Agassiz, Remington, Harriet Beecher Stowe. Some larger-than-life, others obscured through time's dim glass. The Panama Canal, South Dakota Badlands, the rural mid-west. West Virginian coal mines. Places famous and forgotten.
McCullough has an eye for the dramatic and grand. Remington and Roosevelt, thundering across the range, trying to explore the western frontier before it becomes civilized and tame. The building of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, the engineering marvel of its day, contrasted with another engineering marvel, the Panama canal which cost of hundreds of lives in the muck and mire of jungles and mud.
He also has an eye for wonder in the small, tiny details of creation; the delicate, exacting drawings of Audubon and Agassiz, the flea collections of Ms. Rothschild, the painfully detailed drawings of a long-forgotten architect or the private musings and ruminations of a Commander-in-Chief who longed for heart and home.
"We live in the present, it's all we have." And no one captures other peoples' present, quite like David McCullough.
Interesting, Informative, Superb...as usual.......2007-07-09
I found this little gem in the wrong section of the library and upon seeing the author, knew it was going to be good. I was right - it's quintessential McCullough. He, like Paul Johnson and Daniel Boorstin, see history in terms of people great and small. In fact, in the preface he admits his preference for people over politics, of the individual over the group.
The work is actually a compendium of various essays written for various reasons and in various journals. The "biographical/great deed" aspect is the common bond among them. One characteristic of ideologues is their disinterest in individuals and their lives. Their only concern in the movement, the creed, the ideology for which they live and die. But real history is actually the story of people (not movements) and it is here that the past comes alive. McCullough chose a seemingly random group of individuals. They range from the naturalist Humholdt, his successor Louis Agassiz, intrepid novelist Harriet Beecher Stowe to a man who fought strip mining in Kentucky just to give you a flavor of the variety offered. McCullough delights in describing not just their ideas and deeds but their looks, their likes, dislikes, manner of speaking - in other words, they become real once more.
We follow McCullough from the Brooklyn Bridge to France to Brazil and are dazzled by him as much as he is dazzled by the personalities he has chosen to describe. The final chapter is a deeply felt reflection on history, a summation that is not a review but still offers a fresh voice. My Grade - A
McCullough's Brave Companions.......2007-05-17
A small book that delivers more than promised by the reviewers. Even the introduction is enjoyable. Each chapter introduces a person that deserves to be remembered; most of whom, would indeed, be a wonderful companion. Good history, good read-aloud book for families.
Enjoyable collection of biographies and history.......2007-05-07
David McCullough has an amazing gift that makes me enjoy reading about people I really don't have any interest in.

The Sisyphean task known as "the Middle East peace process" having broken again in the mid-1990s, Washington Post reporter Glenn Frankel's account of a "new Israel" painfully emerging acquires a renewed and enhanced significance. Frankel, the Post's Jerusalem bureau chief from 1986 to 1989, is himself an American Jew, a background that makes him both uniquely equipped and inevitably embroiled in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Interviews with key players such as Natan Sharansky, Yitzhak Samir, and Israeli general Amram Mitzna enliven this important work.
Book Description
Glenn Frankel, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his work as The Washington Post's Jerusalem bureau chief, pulls no punches in this thorough exploration of the birth of a new Israel. His remarkable access -- to figures ranging from the most senior officials to the young Palestinian street fighters -- informs his sweeping account of years of civil unrest, political upheaval and diplomatic crisis. The result is an unprecedented look at the people caught up in the dance between Israel and the Palestinians.
Customer Reviews:
Beyond the Promised Land.......2001-07-25
At first glance, it appears Frankel has written yet another in the sequence of prominent American journalists’ books about Israel and the Arabs. But his book differs from those by David Shipler and Thomas Friedman in two respects: his topic is not the Arab-Israeli conflict but Israel; and he has a specific thesis that pervades the volume. The title makes that thesis clear: by “beyond the promised land,” the author means that Israel is, chrysalis-like, emerging from its Zionist stage (“a small, collectivist, mobilized garrison-state under siege”) and entering something very different (“a more open, pluralistic, bourgeois and democratic country”). The author welcomes this “new Israel,” as he calls it, arguing that it is “much closer to the benign fate that Herzl and others originally predicted” for the Jewish state. He draws on his three-year residency in Israel during 1986-89 and subsequent trips to the country to produce a lively, chronologically-oriented argument to back up this thesis, one inspired by an affection for and a familiarity with his subject matter.
So far, so good. But Frankel’s account suffers a fault that suffuses the book and much reduces its value: he has an acutely partisan view of Israeli politics, admiring Labor and nearly despising Likud. In a typical passage, he terms the change of government in 1992 the ending of “right-wing Likud domination” and “a return to the more pragmatic, less ideological rule of the left-of-center Labor Party.” "Beyond the Promised Land" would have been a much better book had the author reigned in his prejudices.
Book Description
The teachings of political theorist Leo Strauss (1899–1973) have recently received new attention, as political observers have become aware of the influence Strauss’s students have had in shaping conservative agendas of the Bush administration—including the war on Iraq. This provocative book examines Strauss’s ideas and the ways in which they have been appropriated, or misappropriated, by senior policymakers.
Anne Norton, a political theorist trained by some of Strauss’s most famous students, is well equipped to write on Strauss and Straussians. She tells three interwoven narratives: the story of Leo Strauss, a Jewish German-born émigré, who carried European philosophy into a new world; the story of the philosophic lineage that came from Leo Strauss; and the story of how America has been made a moral battleground by the likes of Paul Wolfowitz, Leon Kass, Carnes Lord, and Irving Kristol—Straussian conservatives committed to an American imperialism they believe will usher in a new world order.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful and thrilling book, not for everyone.......2006-09-17
For me this book is wonderful and thriling, without question. I only wish it could educate the mass public.
Although very well written, the material will appeal mostly to a well educated reader and/or an intelligent person willing to grapple with a bit of political philosophy.
So the book is intelligent; anything else? It is a lot of fun, at least for someone like myself - long-ago a political science professor, who took one course (Cornell) with a Straussian disciple. Ms. Norton was a grad student at the Univ. of Chicago and had numerous encounters with many of the main figures in the Struassian camp (grad school was as close to boot camp as most of them ever came). She knew them without their rhetorical clothes, so to speak, and where they did not have the protection of high office and public relations staff.
What's a major "take home message" in this book? The so-called neo-conservatives are not conservative in any historically meaningful sense of the term. Also, they are dangerous ideologues (my opinion as well as the author's).
Outing the neocons.......2006-08-25
Anne Norton's quirky, edgy account of the followers of Leo Strauss who became today's influential neoconservatives is both comprehensive and disturbing. Not only are they inclined to war and antagonistic towards women and other minorities (not to mention racist) they have also demeaned and bebased the classical conservative legacy of Burke. Be very afraid!
A Classic.......2006-03-27
This is a wonderful book, written with eloquence and honesty. Although the book says more about Straussians than it does about Strauss, it does make clear how much the current breed of neoconservatives have grossly distorted his philosophy. I was particularly pleased by the discussion of Allan Bloom. So many of my progressive friends found his book "The Closing of the American Mind" praiseworthy that I wondered if I had missed something of value in his book.
Professor Norton is to be praised for this classic work.
Tracing Strauss's influence.......2005-10-11
Norton's book is a an attempt to trace the influence of Strauss and Straussianism in the U.S. Academy and in the imperialist politics that govern the new U.S. interventionism abroad. It is a refreshing, immensely readable account of the legacy that Leo Strauss's thought and work has had over the course of the past 40-50 years. Unlike other commentators, Norton does not diabolicize Strauss, yet nonetheless points to the aspects of his thought that opened it up to the conservative and neo-conservative embrace. She demonstrates how Strauss's thought (and other conservative thinkers) have been instrumentalized and transformed by the neoconservative revolution and its hegemonic project.
Is book about Strauss or attacking Bush's War on Terror?.......2005-07-25
Perhaps Anne Norton really is an expert on Leo Strauss. She writes well and throws out a lot of names. But half way through the book, the reader realizes that her interest in Strauss is secondary to her interest in, and dislike of, the Bush War on Terror. By the end, it is apparent that Ms. Norton feels that the War on Terror is being fought by the United States on behalf of Israel.
If you share her conviction that the Neo-conservatives, descended from Strauss, have hijacked U.S. foreign policy on behalf of Israel, read the book. It is well written and makes the conspiracy case about as well as possible. If you just want to learn more about Strauss, try a different book.

Book Description
Dust and molecules are found in a large variety of astrophysical environments, in particular in the circumstellar material ejected by evolved stars. This book brings together the leading astronomers and astrophysicists in the field of molecular astrophysics and stellar physics to discuss the important issues of dust and molecular formation, the role of solids in circumstellar environments, molecules as probes of circumstellar parameters, the stellar contribution to the enrichment of the Galaxy, and the latest observational data in various wavelength domains, in partiular in the infrared with results from the Infrared Space Observatory. The astrophysical senarios include late-type stars, novae, Wolf-Rayet stars, Luminous Blue Variables and supernovae.
Audience: Researchers and graduate students in the fields of stellar physics, stellar evolution and astrochemistry.
