This is without a doubt one of the funniest books I've ever read. You have to go into reading something like this expecting laughs, not advice. The authors tell stories in a smart and satirical way that many people can relate to. If you are looking for a lighthearted, fun read this is the book for you. If you are looking for some hardcore relationship advice you should work on getting a life.

This has to be the worst book I've ever attempted to read. I wasted $15 for nothing. This is not a "guide" to anything but a bunch of nonsense strategically arranged into silly little subtitled chapters with a sad attempt at using catchy humor! I made it to page 40, flipped through the rest, and then threw it right in the trash feeling like I wish I could somehow get my money back.

The Shallow Road to Shallow Living. .......2007-04-23
The first thing I'll say about his book is that I had to give it two stars instead of one due to the authors' apparent lack of hostility towards men. In an age of misandry, guys like me have to be pleased with whatever alms we are given. At any rate, certainly this is one of the shallower books a girl can buy because the lifestyle it describes is every bit as pathetic as it is directionless. The fact is that there is little advice proffered so it isn't a handbook at all. Mostly, it would have to described as a rattle bag of little jokes, quizzes, references, silly antics and who knows what else. It certainly is hard to qualify, but the one thing for certain is that the viewpoint it espouses is completely devoid of intellectual and emotional depth. It's main purpose seems to be an attempt to sooth vain, materialistic, and impulsive women due to the problems which arise from their poor decision making. The biggest problem with their presentation is the authors' attempts to be cute. All the humor is cutesy and obvious. Yawn, oh well, at least I bought the book for the sake of research. I hope you guard your money better than I do.

Extremely popular and prolific in the 1930s and 1940s, Cornell Woolrich still has diehard fans who thrive on his densely packed descriptions and his spellbinding premises. A contemporary of Hammett and Chandler, he competed with them for notoriety in the pulps and became the single most adapted writer for films of the noir period. Perhaps the most famous film adaptation of a Woolrich story is Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window (1954). Even today, his work is still onscreen; Michael Cristofer's Original Sin (2001) is based on one of his tales.
This book offers a detailed analysis of many of Woolrich's novels and short stories; examines films adapted from these works; and shows how Woolrich's techniques and themes influenced the noir genre. Twenty-two stories and 30 films compose the bulk of the study, though many other additions of films noirs are also considered because of their relevance to Woolrich's plots, themes, and characters. The introduction includes a biographical sketch of Woolrich and his relationship to the noir era, and the book is illustrated with stills from Woolrich's noir classics.

The books is mainly about counting your tricks and planning ahead and avoiding finesses. It doesn't cover anything like end plays, trump coups, squeezes, etc. Just the basics.

A rare opportunity.......2007-04-10
This is the catalogue for a 2005 exhibit at the Met. A valuable addition to the literature on Van Gogh, it encompasses his whole career as a draughtsman, and a brilliant one of course. The images are perfect (you sometimes get the impression that you are holding the actual drawing) and the text very helpful, giving sizes, provenances and many excerpts of Van Gogh's own letters.I remember visiting the exhibition in crammed rooms on a saturday afternoon, therefore I was glad to be able to savour it once again in a quieter atmosphere, thanks to the book.
Drawing at the highest level.......2007-01-28
Lord Kenneth Clark, at the end of his book and television series, Civilization, said he had come to believe that there was such a thing as "genius". After looking through this book, so will you.
With over 350 drawings, mostly reproduced in color, and dozens more color reproductions of paintings, this will no doubt be the definitive work of the artist's drawings. We see many of his early drawings, including those enhanced with chalk, watercolor, etc. We see the drawings and watercolors done in preparation for his paintings and then we see the paintings themselves.
But the high points of the book are the three drawings in pen and ink done after each of the paintings and intended as reproductions of those works. He wanted a means to share these paintings with three different correspondents: John Russell, Emile Bernard and his brother Theo. He obviously couldn't afford the oil and canvas to reproduce each painting three more times. These laborious drawings were executed and mailed to individuals with whom Van Gogh wanted to share his work (and perhaps impress), or, in the case of his brother, to also show his love and appreciation. Slight variations among the three drawings after the same painting show further, "post-oil" development of each subject and give us additional insight into his style and his thinking. The color reproductions of his drawings allow us to see how the ink on each has faded over time and a 100-year old reproduction of a drawing shows us how the original has faded over time. Because virtually all of the drawings done as a mature artist were on 9-1/2 by 11-1/2 sheets, the reproductions in the book are almost actual size.
Fortunately, both Bernard and Theo's widow and heirs believed very strongly in his work, including his drawings, and ignored the advice of critics to throw it all away. They continued to promote the artist's work after his death, eventually leading to his broader recognition over the following decades. If you appreciate great drawing, this is a "must have" book.

The book is much more technical than the "Letter" book I recently read. I enjoy that because I have always wanted to know how he painted or drew his pictures as well as how is life and painting developed.

Anyone interested in True Beauty as exemplified by Art would be most satisfied with this magnificent work. Not only are the illustrations first class, the breadth and depth is astonishing. This tomb has virtually ALL Van Gogh's works, etchings and all. It also tells the physical location of his work (as of 1970), and is considered the basis for all Van Gogh study. Many of his best works are color illustrated. My personal favorite being a portrait of an elderly seems to be sailor, sitting before a montage of Japanese pictures. The dust cover is an absolutely beautiful rendition of "Starry Night". A must for any serious student or lover of great Art.

A real loser of a book, TIRED, not even close to being progressive.......2006-03-16
This book was a huge disappointment. A real loser of a book, very TIRED. I doubt that Howard Dean even read this loose collection of short articles by different people, before he agreed to lend his name to it.
There is no real discussion of any issue in this loosely edited work, most of the focus is on sub-elements of the democratic constituency and abouit "the message."
Even worse, for anyone actually familiar with progressives and the new progressives, it is infuriating to not see any mention of Paul Ray and the Cultural Creatives, and the New Political Compass (Google it to get a grip). These people don't even mention the New America Foundation and that brilliant book on "The Radical Center."
LOSERS! This is why the Democratic Party is not a credible alternative to liars with money to burn.

Sorry about using all caps in the title but I want to scream! This book has all the information you need to get started. The only way to succeed in the next election is with a solid grass roots organization in place. This book does not have everything you need ... but everything you need to get started. Great book, right on target.......2006-01-26
This is a great book that is right on target. Here are 3 Ideas I would add:
( 1 ) - When you find people who say "There's too much money in politics. Politicians will never reform it." Encourage them to always vote against the candidate that buys the most TV air time. If enough of us do that, it eliminates the benefit of big money and reforms government without any help from Washington.
( 2 ) - An honest, progressive candidate should be able to offer voters access that their opponents can not. Offering to hold regular open town halls, provide Internet and mail survey tools to gather input from average people and hold themselves accountable with a report card that is guided by the first 2 tools should appeal to swing voters and jaded non-voters alike.
( 3 ) - Tax cuts for teachers. Yes, Tax cuts for teachers and a U.S. Dept. of Education that truly identifies and develops "Best Practices" and helps struggling schools implement best practices that fit their situation.

How to improve on the authors methods........2006-01-20
The author mentions the standard methods of grass roots organizing and petitioning but I suggest an improvement.
If progressives form one large ad hoc union and boycott some of the major companies that give money to the Republican Party and lobby Republican representatives and senators we can make progressive legislative demands of the company CEOs or they lose our business and our money.
I suggest people write congress and demand a progressive agenda and tell your representatives that unless they increase the minimum wage, pass universal health care, pass vote by mail with paper ballots counted by civil servants throughout the US and other progressive legislation, you will boycott companies like Wendy's restaurants, Outback Steakhouse and other hard core Republican contributors.
I would also suggest people look at websites like buyblue.org and boycott-republicans.com which advocate boycotting companies that give money to the Republican Party and then demanding that these CEOs go to the Republican Party and get the legislation that we progressives want.
