SKETCH BOOKS.......2007-01-09
MY SON IS IN HIS SECOND YEAR OF ART CLASS. HIS TEACHER HAD SOME OF THESE BOOKS IN HER CLASS. I FOUND HIM ONE AT AN ARTS AND CRAFTS STORE, BUT IT WAS EXPENSIVE. THE PRICE ON AMAZON WAS INCREDIBLE!!! HE LOVES HIS BOOKS AND YOU CANNOT BEAT THEH PRICE. WE ARE VERY PLEASED!!!
Pick this up.......2003-04-02
Great book! I'm a fan of the author Christopher Hart and this is one of his best. I'd recommend it for any fan of comics and illustrators who want to enhance their craft. Lots of great tips and chuckles.
Excellent!.......2003-04-02
This book was filled with great drawings, great tips, and lots of humor. I've learned alot and at the same time was entertained. How can you beat that? My only disappointment was that it wasn't twice as many pages.
Excellent From Start To Finish.......2003-03-21
This book was very helpful to me. I enjoy drawing mysterious creatures and by reading this book and studying the pictures I can learn how to draw them with more detail. I found that after a while of studying the pictures and drawing each figure step by step my drawing improved a lot. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys drawing and doodling. If you haven't started drawing yet, this is your chance.
O.K. but not great.......2001-06-17
There are several different drawings of different creatures but they all seem generic. Lately there isn't a lot of use for drawing creatures for any industry jobs. If you have to draw creatures pick it up, but if your short on cash it's passable.

Book Description
Juvenile, profane, and timeless, Fuck This Book collects images of real public signs that have been mischieveously altered by stickers bearing the most expressive of all four-letter words. Addictively hilarious, the results show a world persuasively transformed. Please Don't Fuck the Pigeons, indeed. What happens if one triggers the Automatic Sprinkler Fuck Off Valve? And is it any wonder The Fuck Depot is so popular? All photographs are unretouchedthe result of countless hours on the hunt for the almost perfect sign, in need of just the slightest improvement. This is not social commentary. There is no message. It's not meant to offend, exploit, or embarrass anyone. All real stickers. All real signs. All in fun.

Not worth the money.......2007-05-18
This book is a lot shorter than it appears. It has very little re-readability because of this. I would save my money and just browse the selected pages online.
do not attempt.......2007-04-20
i do not recommend actually trying to make-love (i don't like the "F"-word, it sounds so nasty and animalish) to this book---trust me, you will get paper cuts. if you want to make-love to a book, i suggestGod Loves Baby: Soft Playtime Book (Baby Blessings). it is nice and soft and can be used in the bathtub!
Yes, this IS the best book ever written!.......2007-02-15
When reading the first few pages of this book, I thought to myself "ok...". As I progressed, I thought this was kind of humorous. Page by page became increasingly hilarious until so much laughter was induced that my sides hurt. The idea that someone would have the much motivation to invest that much time and energy on such a task is so ridiculously funny that it makes me start laughing even without opening the book. It has been stated that this is the best book ever written. It is.
FUN but not EXCELLENT.......2007-01-30
fun enough concept and book, but not that overly creative in the end. good enough coffee table lay-around.
funny the first time...then not so much afterwards.......2007-01-14
I thought this book would make a great gag gift for a friend, but when it arrived, and I started flipping through the pages, I thought better of presenting it as a gift. True enough, some of the images are hilarious, but some are really rather crude and more mean than funny. It's the kind of book that one wants to see, but not really own. Honestly, what are you going to do with it once you've gone through it?
Book Description
Written by a true fan, this reflection on one of the most loved Irish films of all time collects mementos from John Ford's Oscar winning The Quiet Man. Although made more than 50 years ago, this romance, starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, continues to fire the imaginations of Ireland's visitors, would-be visitors, and lovers of cinema. This collection serves as a photo album, with candid shots from behind the scenes and stills from the film itself, a miscellany of little-known facts about the locations, bit parts, costumes, and directorial commentary, and never-before-published material that will charm film buffs and engage film historians.

Very pretty arrangements.......2005-09-22
I've been using this book at weddings, where my friend and I get hired to play violin duets, and we use most of the songs in this book at some point in the ceremony. Pretty much any song that someone will ask for-- whether for processional, recessional, bride's song, pre-wedding mood music-- is in this book. The arrangements mazimize the sound and harmony despite the presence of only two instrumentalists, and the parts are not too difficult (but they sound great anyway). Highly recommended!

A very reliable author.......2006-02-17
By positional chess the author means those aspects of the game that cannot be determined by pure calculation alone. Other factors based on our experiences and acquired knowledge come into play, and it is these factors combined that make up the concept of positional judgement.
The book falls into four parts. In Part One the author sets out to define three important terms - imbalance, initiative and weakness. Several examples are given to illustrate the importance of each concept. Then in Part Two, titled Relative Value of Pieces, it is the turn of the pieces to come under scrutiny. There is a chapter each on Bishops and Knights, Rooks, the Exchange and Queens. In Part Three he turns his attention to the Pawns, with two chapters, one on structural weaknesses and another on Pawn sacrifices. Finally, Part Four, Big Decisions, shows how to take advantage of all those weaknesses that have been identified in previous chapters in a chapter entitled Where to Attack and How. Finally there is a chapter of exercises and a chapter of solutions. Apart from this chapter of exercises there are test positions appended to each of the chapters in the book, so the reader has ample opportunity to test his newly acquired knowledge.
Carsten Hansen is developing into a very reliable author, and this book only serves to enhance his growing reputation. Compared with twenty or thirty years ago, the chess player of today has an enviable choice of books to study on different aspects of the game, and this one is well worth adding to your list.

Review of Improve Your Positional Chess.......2005-12-05
Usually, books on positional chess strategy book feature games from the Stone Ages where X, who was either way ahead of his time or perhaps a kid from our age with a time machine and a sadistic streak not satisfied by the Internet Chess Club, demolishes a set of Neanderthals who have so little concept of positional ideas that our hero's plan is crystal clear. Hero has just to cause a doubled pawn and the whole game is determined from there on. Sadly this does not work for us, as every kid you play, including your sister's pre-school darlings, is well up on the latest computer-tested theory. This is the book to solve your problems! Hansen gives clear examples, not from dinosaurs but from the very best players in the world now. If even they can make positional errors then our chances of beating the neighbour's teenage tournament winner are pretty good. Hansen insists that "chess is at least 90% based on positional factors" so if you master them, you're well on your way. And as well as dozens of inspiring examples, he gives you carefully chosen exercises with instructions like "identify the most important weaknesses in Black's position, and put a plan together for White to exploit them." That's just what you'd have to do in a game, and he really helps you work out how to do it! Not only that, but if things have gone horribly wrong and your position looks like Katrina passed through, he gives you ideas on how to derail your opponent and get back on level terms. What about tactics, I hear you say? Well, it's amazing how many more tactical tricks you can play if you have the better position to start with!
Well thought out book on positional chess.......2005-07-14
I've had this book sitting on my shelf for a little while and finally got around to working through it. I sure am glad I did. If you are like me, you start studying a chess book and after a while you discover that you are not studying the right book, so you start a new book only to repeat the process. Well I can now say that I have settled my study pattern. I have some openings that I work on, some tactical excersises, I study Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual (excellent book) and this one.
One reason I like 'Improve Your Positional Chess' is that it helps me tie all the other stuff together. The book has sections on imbalances, initiative, weaknesses, bishop v. knight, open files, etc. All the stuff a book on positional chess should cover. The examples used by Hansen are taken from recent Grandmaster play and are well anotated. The key ideas and critical moments in the examples are explained in clear language with important variations noted.
Each section of the book includes excersises for the reader. Here I have my only beef with the book. I do believe that the excersises should be presented in order of difficulty or at least the author should give the reader some idea of the difficulty of each exercise. I don't mind working out the solutions, but if Anand screwed up a position, I am unlikely to do better. This is a relatively minor beef, don't let it persuade you not to buy the book.
This book probably must useful for players rated over 1600 USCF. Below that, your time is most likely better spent on tactics.
Book Description
Take the Cannoli is a moving and wickedly funny collection of personal stories stretching across the immense landscape of the American scene. Vowell tackles subjects such as identity, politics, religion, art, and history with a biting humor. She searches the streets of Hoboken for traces of the town's favorite son, Frank Sinatra. She goes under cover of heavy makeup in an investigation of goth culture, blasts cannonballs into a hillside on a father-daughter outing, and maps her family's haunted history on a road trip down the Trail of Tears. Vowell has an irresistible voice -- caustic and sympathetic, insightful and double-edged -- that has attracted a loyal following for her magazine writing and radio monologues on This American Life.

Funny, well-written, but a bit short..........2007-08-24
I became a fan of Sarah Vowell after reading Assassination Vacation, and decided to go back and read her early works. Take the Cannoli: Stories from the New World is very good although a bit short. It's also a bit dated, although that's entirely my fault for taking so long to discover Vowell.
Take the Cannoli is a compilation of short stories that mostly deal with the author's life. She writes of being born in Oklahoma and raised in Montana, her twin sister and her parents, her education and her background (she's part Cherokee), her political beliefs and her interest in history, and especially her travels. Many of them are downright funny, and Vowell has a wicked, self-deprecating wit. The chapter on her trying to alter her appearance to become a "Goth" was a scream! I also enjoyed her escapes as a band geek. In high school, Vowell wasn't exactly your average high school student. "I have intimate knowledge of what it was like to be young and uneasy and outraged under Reagan. My high school was 1980s in miniature--you either belonged or you didn't. And if you didn't, you learned to seek relief where you could find it--and for me, that relief was with other black-clad malcontents who could quote defense-spending statistics even though we were barely passing algebra."
Vowell is at her best when she chronicles her travels and two that I enjoyed were her trip to Disney World and her tracing the Cherokee Trail of Tears. While her reflections on her Disney trip were funny, her take on The Trail of Tears poignant, sad and reflective. But even The Trail of Tears is good for a few chuckles, at Vowell's expense. When traveling on a road near her hometown, she relates that "only I know its topography with the intimacy that comes from leaning over every inch of it, carsick. I can't help but wonder if the grass grows so close to the shoulder because of my personal fertilizer crusade: I was a little Lady Bird Johnson of puke."
I wish that Vowell wrote books a little quicker, but in the meantime, I'll have to content myself with reading her earlier works.
Decent collection of author's early work.......2007-07-24
Writer Sarah Vowell established a following on NPR's "This American Life" in explorations of the byroads of American culture as well as her own life. Many of those pieces appear in TAKE THE CANNOLI in essay form alongside articles that originally appeared in print and online. The collection reveals the growth of the writer, from insightful young talent to a person shedding the edges of youth for a mature perspective on herself and, especially, her relationship as an American with this world. While her most recent work, ASSASSINATION VACATION, has her at the top of her powers, this collection, interesting in itself, shows her getting there.
Vowell begins by peeling back her youth as the liberal daughter of a Second Amendment gunsmith in Oklahoma and Montana; her life in high school band; and finally, growing up under the threat of doom held over her head by her family's Pentacostal religion and the Reagan administration's imagery of the evil empire and nuclear war. She moves onto tours of Frank Sinatra's hometown, Hoboken, New Jersey; Disney World and Celebration, Florida; New York's infamous Chelsea Hotel; Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp; and Goth culture. There a hilarious episode in which the creator of "This American Life," Ira Glass, tries to teach Vowell to drive. The second strongest piece in the collection is the essay from which she takes her title, an account of watching "The Godfather" religiously in college, hanging onto its simple imperatives in defense against the uncertain waves of diverse philosophy that swirl in academe. The strongest piece is the trip she takes with her twin sister Amy tracing the Trail of Tears their Cherokee ancestors were forced to march when President Andrew Jackson banished them from their own property. In that, you see Vowell learning to wrangle the kind of ambiguities that usually stop others in their tracks. I love how she loves America, clear-eyed but without apology.
This collection of essays is often topical and thus some of them are a little dated, or at least ironic given more recent events. I'd really like to sit down with Vowell, to see what she thinks now.
Read it, just not first........2006-11-17
Having read The Partly Cloudy Patriot first, I loved this book because it invited me to learn more about the author and her life. And in that respect, the book is very good--well-written and full of Vowell's characteristic wit. I would not, however, recommend it as a first taste of Sarah Vowell; I think it's funnier and more interesting once you're familiar with her style.
Take the Cannoli.......2006-08-27
She's a staple of This American Life on Public Radio International, and she's also appeared in GQ, Salon and Request. Her humor and wit are sharp and perceptive. But, let me work from the back cover blurbs.
Essays on American history, pop culture and her own family. Yep. But it's not easy to get me interested in American history or pop culture. A madonna of Americana. Yep, but I'm bored again.
Her writing about her family, early on, was great. Then we got some history that bored me, but I kept going because she is talented. Surface, but talented. Then an essay about the Trail of Tears that really hit home for me, then some amusing stuff. It's not bad, but I don't see myself going back for seconds. I'll keep an eye on whatever else she does.
More Sarah Vowell, Please.......2006-06-03
Take the Cannoli was a wonderful mixture of essays that was throughly enjoyable. As I have become used to with Sarah Vowell, her family, her relationship with her twin sister, her friends, her thoughts on the world in which she lives, her love for history, and the challenges of her everyday life flow through many of these essays, interconnecting them in ways that you do not expect. The essays in Take the Cannoli are consistently good, often made me laugh out loud, and in some cases changed my perspective on a particular subject. Although I didn't always agree with her, I certainly appreciated her passion.

Book Description
It would be a perfect world if everyone could quit their jobs and devote themselves fully to the causes they believed in. Instead, The Better World Handbook shows caring, but busy people how to live out their progressive values and have a life! The principle behind this engaging guide is to incorporate everyday activism into even the most mundane areas of our lives - like grocery shopping, banking, eating, reading the newspaper, and working.
The book begins with a concise summary of our society's most pressing problems that lead directly to seven foundations necessary for building a better world: economic fairness, comprehensive peace, ecological sustainability, deep democracy, social justice, a culture of simplicity, and revitalized community. Subsequent chapters are organized around intuitive topics such as Food, Money, Transportation, Work, and Media, focusing on activities that support the seven foundations for a better world. A purchase can allow a locally owned business to thrive; money invested in the right bank can create opportunities for poor communities; a vacation can contribute to preserving wilderness areas; tuning-in to public and alternative media can put readers back in control of their thoughts, feelings and values that mainstream media marginalize.
Practical and extremely well researched by four university instructors who have synthesized knowledge from a wide variety of sources, The Better World Handbook provides readers with the essential information they need to take effective actions that will make a difference across the entire spectrum of the world's problems.

Great Resource for the Environmentally Conscious.......2007-01-05
I am a sponsor for an environmental club at my school and we use this book as our basic resource for information, for ideas to promote environmental awareness within the school, and as an easy buying guide for environmenally friendly products. It is an easy tool to use and I like all the useful information in one readable location.
Change your world with just 300 pages.......2006-05-07
This book has been such a great tool in getting college students motivated. I took Sociology from Ross Haenfler this semester and it was AMAZING. We used this book as one of our textbooks and this past week everyone in the class agreed that THIS is the one book that won't be returning to the book mart. It has such valuable advice to get out in the community, city, world and make a difference. If you want to make a major change or even just learn how to recycle properly .. this is the book you need to read. BUY THIS BOOK!
Practice What You Preach.......2005-02-03
I LOVED this book. It gives all kinds of good practical advice on how every day actions really CAN make a difference. It cites a lot of other great books too that you can read in further detail about the things that are mentioned in the book which i really appreciate.
When I first read this book I was a student activist who thought that i always needed to do BIG things to change the world. Some of the little things that i would do made me feel different from the rest of my friends and make me feel like i was not doing enough. This book affirmed some of my decisions and made me feel serious about doing more.
This book is a good guide to actually living to make the world a better place! There are a lot of issues in the book that can and MUST be further researched but I think that the authors do a wonderful job at encouraging you to actually do so by suggesting books and websites to get you started. Its good for what it is: a guide to how to live. And it can point you in great directions for further more academic exploration of the issues that are presented.
I will say that I have used this book as MY BIBLE to living. I would suggest this in addition to Sojourners magazine to those who want to look at these same issues from a Christian perspective
An invaluable resource.......2004-11-19
Want to make a difference but don't know where to begin? Try reading "The Better World Handbook" by Ellis Jones, Ross Haenfler, Brett Johnson, and Brian Klocke. They offer a variety of actions on issues like poverty, environmental damage, and free trade that you can incorporate into your life. What's great about this book is that you can pick and choose what works for you at the moment - there are suggested actions that may not seem doable now but you can probably do later. You don't have agree with each issue the authors describe and suggest actions for, and the authors make a good attempt at avoiding a self-righteous tone. I have notes and have highlighted what actions I can manage, and will keep referring to this list (probably on the new year's eves to come).
The authors first explain our culture of cynicism and define the 7 most common traps that prevent people from taking action on issues they care about. I found this especially revealing as I have often caught myself in one or more of those traps. They then describe the seven foundations of a better world (economic fairness, comprehensive peace, ecological sustainability, deep democracy, social justice, culture of simplicity, and revitalized community) and have a list of references on each foundation. What follows are numerous actions regarding money (e.g. banking), shopping, food, personal living and relationships, community, home, work, media, politics, transportation, and travel. Some of the website links they include are not up-to-date, so I strongly recommend doing a search on the organizations mentioned and trying to find similar links and organizations.
This book is a starting point and can inspire other actions that are not included in the book. Reading "The Better World Handbook" is an invaluable first step to realizing that one person can really make a difference.
Tedious Secular Liberal Drivel.......2004-07-24
Want to Change the World (tm)? Then stick with your old Utne Readers. There's nothing in this book you won't find there, and dozens of other places. Do you really need another book to tell you to recycle and watch less TV?
The authors, although they decry the holier-than-thou attitude of some of their activist peers, fall prey to the same illness. In the first few pages, they dismiss the majority of Americans - that is, Christians - by announcing that if you believe that human nature is the cause of our troubles, you're part of the problem. (Ever hear of original sin?) They assume that their readers have unlimited money to drop on organic bok choi and shoes with hemp content, but they miss obvious healthy and frugal options like breastfeeding. They'll tell you how to be an activist in the public schools, but not about homeschooling. The shopping guide - which is available on their Web site for free, by the way - ranks corporations so that you can make the most politically correct choices. Of course, there's little to tell you what criteria were used for these judgment calls, you don't really need to think for yourself, do you? Just march in lock-step with your progressive peers and the world will be a better place.
If you really want to change the world without changing the root of our problems - the human heart - save your money and donate it to a reputable charity instead. But if you want to score a date with that vegan, World Bank-protesting hottie, this book will teach you the right noises to make.
