3 out of 5 stars Internet 101 for artists.......2005-07-09

Was o.k., but lacked "how to" info that I was expecting. It deals with general information, which is good for beginners, but does not have any "meat". The only exception was the "Selling on E-Bay" section, which is very helpful. If only the rest of the book were written by this person!

Culture Shock in Texas can be intense and is exacerbate by local rules of propriety that tell us to keep out mouths shut. But here in this book we are going to talk all about it with good old Yankee outspokenness. We'll clear the air, share experiences, orient newcomers, and have some good laughs.

5 out of 5 stars Right on target!.......2007-08-23

Since moving to Texas, I've been puzzled by some 'odd' behavior by friends. Now I GET IT. This book is hilarious, well-written, and absolutely on target.

          5 out of 5 stars A New Transplant.......2004-03-09

As a new Texan, and yes a Yankee Chick, I found this book extremely helpful. I understand my new adopted state a little better, but I understand how different I may appear to my new found friends due solely to this book. Thanks to my best friend up North for buying this book for me as a going away present. I read it on the way here on the plane, I could not put the book down. It is time again for me to read it... it's that good.

          5 out of 5 stars What a GREAT read!!!.......2003-10-24

This should be required reading for any Yankee Chick moving to Texas as well as any one who embraces the many cultural differences that make this country great. Ms. Dembling's insight and sharp wit had me laughing out loud many times and I don't even live in Texas or the South; I'm just a Yankee Chick living up North in Yankee land. Before reading this delightful book (which I read on a lark during a biz trip to Dallas) I had no interest in Texas, but now - hell, I think I'd like to plan a vacation there, perhaps find my self some good old boys to hang out with! Her pride in being a Yankee Chick and her love of Texas is evident throughout and it translates into a sincerity that makes this book so special. Hurry, buy this book!!!!

          5 out of 5 stars Useful ... and funny.......2003-08-05

I'm contemplating a move to Texas, and this book is just what I needed. It's funny, the author is charming and the info is perfect. As a native Californian, I really had no idea what to expect from Texas, but after reading this, I think I do. It seems like everything is different in Texas, from customs to state pride to guns to food, and it would be easy to be confused. It would be great if someone could write this book about every state in the nation. I think we'd all understand each other better.
I also think this would be a great gift to give someone who has moved to Texas in the past five years or so. It's really funny.

5 out of 5 stars Waiting for the sequel.......2002-11-22

The book was well-thought out and researched. It explained parts of Texas and attributes of Texans never explained publicly so well before. I recognized myself in it, I must confess.

She needs to write "The Texan Guide to Yankeeland". Now that would be very useful to us 5 remaining Native Texans in the whole state.

There's not as much difference between the two Addams Chronicles editions as there is with the two Munsters books. But the added info and color photos make this Addams Chronicles the definate one to own. I ordered it from a seller through Amazon and got it in 6 days. Regular shipping. That's really good. I ordered the other version; Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About The Addams Family from a different seller. It took 3 weeks and it wasn't even the right one. But this one is as right as rain. Order with confidence. I hope someday Stephen Cox will put together a a complete book the covers both the Addams and Munsters with a combined episode guide for both shows in broadcast order, a detailed description of their houses, a profile of guest stars that have appeared on both shows, lots of photos both color and black & white, and anything else that would be of interest.

          5 out of 5 stars a really fun book.......2007-06-14

I really loved the Addams family and this book brought it all back. Great info on what happened to each member after the family ended. If you're a fan it's a must read.

          4 out of 5 stars Pennyhead's Three Sentences Or Less No-Nonsense Review.......2005-09-30

"The Addams Chronicles" is a wonderful book that delves into the nooks and crannies of one of the best, most thought out and well crafted TV shows ever produced. The cast histories, behind-the-scenes stories and color photos are exhilarating. The chapter on the ravishingly beautiful Carolyn Jones who played Morticia is way way too short.

          5 out of 5 stars They're creepy and they're kooky, Part 2.......2005-07-20

I loved the first edition of this book so much that I HAD to buy the revised edition! This is a must-have for all Addams Family fans! Stephen Cox makes you feel like you're part of the family!

4 out of 5 stars Ooky Is Right.......2004-06-30

Will we ever again see a TV show as full of nonconformity, deep dark humor, and head-scratching eccentricity as the Addams Family? I doubt it. This book is a treasure trove of trivia and collector's info for Addams geeks worldwide. Stephen Cox is as knowledgeable an enthusiast as you could hope for, though his writing could use some work. That's usually not a problem in a fun trivia book like this, though when it comes to cultural analysis he does get in over his head sometimes. Examples are his weak attempts to compare the show to the French playwright Moliere, or to explain the deep cultural significance of Gomez's love for cigars. But otherwise, you'll learn some great Addams TV tidbits here, like who played Thing (Ted Cassidy, better known for playing Lurch), and who did Cousin Itt's voice (soundman Tony Magro). You also may not have known that the pig who played Pugsley's frighteningly alive piggy bank also played Arnold on Green Acres. The only real problem with this book is the very quick and rather uninformative biographies of the stars. With the exception of Jackie Coogan (Uncle Fester), most of the actors get bios that are only two or three pages long. But in the end, I'm especially happy to learn that I'm not the only one who thinks that Carolyn Jones as Morticia was quite sexy, rather than creepy. [~doomsdayer520~]

5 out of 5 stars Juicing for Health.......2005-08-16

I really enjoyed this book a lot. It has a lot of very helpful information regarding the benefits of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. I keep it in my kitchen cabinet as a quick reminder of what each fruit or veggie is doing for my body as I juice it. I also use it when talking to others about the benefits of juicing.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Buy this Book for the Number of Recipies.......2003-01-11

Frankly, this book was kind of a disappointment. I bought it thinking it would have a lot of interesting recipes in it. "Over 200 recipes" is claimed in the cover. But many of these combinations I could have thought up myself and they are very simple. The soups, smothies, and sorbet sections are very short with few recipes. Also, the English terminology/spellings can be annoying. Nutritional breakdown of every recipe would be helpful, but it is just given for the fruits and vegetables. I am sure the nutrition changes somewhat when you juice something. The color pictures are also not even in the same section as the recipe, which is also annoying. However, the quantities given for the amount of fruits/veggies you need to make the juices will be helpful. It also gives some basic information on each fruit/vegetable and what they are touted for. This is not a terrible book, but just not what I expected. If you want simple recipes and have no creativity, this may be the book for you. If you are looking for in-depth information and better recipes, this is not what you are looking for.

4 out of 5 stars good basic juicing book.......1999-05-03

Some basic juicing information is given along with lots of recipes. But some of the information on juicing is taken straight from Jay Juiceman's book, right down to a few unsited direct quotes. The part that bothers me is that she fails to give him any credit anywhere in the book, not even a recommended reading list. So if it's more juice recipes you're after, get this book, if it's more detailed information on juicing, get the book she quietly used as a source _The Juiceman's Power of Juicing_ by Jay Kordich.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent nutritional information and tasty recipes........1998-12-06

I found this book an excellent information source for nutritional information on fruit and vegetable juices. It is well organized and indexed by primary fruit and vegetable and contains a section on spicy elements such as ginger root and garlic which can be used to add zest to the juice. Rather than a purely medicinal type book, it has recipes and illustrations for some really tasty treats. My favorite is a carrot parsnip combination with a little parsley ad lib. I use this book every day and recommend it to anyone who wants good health with good taste.

Ram Charan learned about business from his family's shoe shop in India before attending Harvard Business School and going on to advise senior executives in companies large and small. His experiences taught him that universal laws apply "whether you sell fruit from a stand or are running a Fortune 500 company," and that the business acumen that comes from understanding these basics can be applied throughout any operation. What the CEO Wants You to Know is Charan's primer on this point, which he illustrates with explanations filtered through the eyes of street venders and other small shopkeepers. One, for example, involves a woman in Managua, Nicaragua, who sells clothing from a small cart and beats the oppressive interest rates on her loans and the puny profit margins on her goods with a skillfully selected inventory that is quickly and repeatedly turned over. Whether it's a corner merchant or a giant manufacturing concern, Charan notes, "the faster the velocity, the higher the return." Relating such thinking to cash generation, customer satisfaction, and other essentials, he describes the universal principles that help all companies make money. "What your CEO wants you to know is how these fundamentals of business work in your company," he writes before embarking on a very lucid explanation that can be quickly absorbed and put into practice. --Howard Rothman

            Book Description

The universal laws of business success . . . no matter whether you are selling fruit from a stand or running a Fortune 500 company.

Have you ever noticed that the business savvy of the world's best CEOs seems like a kind of street smarts? They sense where the opportunities are and how to take advantage of them. And their companies make money consistently, year after year.

How different is it to run a big company than to sell fruit from a cart or run a small shop in a village? In essence, not very, according to Ram Charan. From his childhood in India, where he worked in his family's shoe shop, to his education at Harvard Business School and his daily work advising many of the world's best CEOs, Ram understands business as few can.

The best CEOs have a knack for bringing the most complex business down to the fundamentals -- the same fundamentals of the family shoe shop. They have business acumen -- the ability to focus on the basics and make money for the company.

What the CEO Wants You to Know captures these insights and explains in clear, simple language how to do what great CEOs do instinctively and persistently:

            * Understand the basic building blocks of a business and use them to figure out how your company makes money and operates as a total business.

            * Decide what to do, despite the clutter of day-to-day business and the complexity of the real world.

Many people spend more than a hundred thousand dollars on an MBA without learning to pull these pieces of the puzzle together. Many others lack a formal business education and feel shut out from the executive suite. What the CEO Wants You to Know takes the mystery out of business and shows the secrets of success used by business legends like Jack Welch of GE.

Charan explains the keys to making money and increasing wealth: 1) Business Acumen (the main components being cash generation, margin, velocity, return on assets, growth, and focus on the customer) and 2) Getting things done (which includes selecting the right people, increasing their capacity, and linking their efforts to a core set of business goals - developed using business acumen). Sounds simple, right? Frankly, it is. It's a no-nonsense explanation of what all managers, and all employees ought to know about business to enable them to gauge the performance of their company/organization/group, and put practical achievable plans in place to improve it.

Nick McCormick - Author, Lead Well and Prosper

4 out of 5 stars simple, straightforward, short, repetitive.......2006-07-04

This book can be read in several hours and is definitely worth of the invested time. I am a total beginner in business, In fact, I study informatics. After reading this book I have a clear view of basic aspects of business. Also, it gave me a more clear understanging of what is a CEO's role.
            let's summarize my thoughts:
            +simple
+short (less then 130 little pages)
+gives a great overview of core business aspects
+good for beginners (contains even links to popular business web sites)

-focused on employees in a leader position
-focused on international (stock) companies. (I work at software companies, can't see, how could I apply the velocity principle here. We have no shareholders, no transparent assests, nor stock, nor transparent margins)
-quite repetitive. The word 'business acumen' is listed at least one hundred times. Some may find the repetition usefull...especially me not

p.s.: I've found this book on the recommended list of PersonalMBA (personalmba.com)

3 out of 5 stars Ok book but a little too wordy.......2006-02-09

Yes, it's a small book already but I thought the author could have got to the points sooner with a little less prose and more advise. I can see that he did a lot of work and is obviously an intelligent person it just as another reviewer put it "the book does not deliver on what the title suggests".
It's worth a read on a long airplane ride but not worth setting your career by.

1 out of 5 stars Dangerously Oversimplified and Misleading.......2005-10-11

This is the first book I've picked from the ChangeThis "Personal MBA" list (http://www.changethis.com/17.PersonalMBA) and boy am I disappointed.

I thought this primer-level introduction to business would give me the tools I needed to understand the nuts & bolts of Collins and Lazier's *Running the Small to Mid-Sized Business* but no such luck.

He gives us a taste of the math that is required to understand business, but I guess he's afraid of scaring people off with too much math, because it's glossed over in such a way as to be unusable. It's like sex without penetration.

And right now I'm reading a section where he says, "Obviously, the higher the P-E multiple, the more wealth is created."

By that logic, all those overvalued internet stocks during the dot com bubble created a lot of wealth. And so did Enron.

I hope the other books on the "Personal MBA" list are better than this.

            Book Description

iCon takes a look at the most astounding figure in a business era noted for its mavericks, oddballs, and iconoclasts. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Jeffrey Young and William Simon provide new perspectives on the legendary creation of Apple, detail Jobs’s meteoric rise, and the devastating plunge that left him not only out of Apple, but out of the computer-making business entirely. This unflinching and completely unauthorized portrait reveals both sides of Jobs’s role in the remarkable rise of the Pixar animation studio, also re-creates the acrimony between Jobs and Disney’s Michael Eisner, and examines Jobs’s dramatic his rise from the ashes with his recapture of Apple. The authors examine the takeover and Jobs’s reinvention of the company with the popular iMac and his transformation of the industry with the revolutionary iPod. iCon is must reading for anyone who wants to understand how the modern digital age has been formed, shaped, and refined by the most influential figure of the age–a master of three industries: movies, music, and computers.

            5 out of 5 stars Oooh The Things I Didn't Know!.......2007-10-17

I've owned two ipods, my dad was the first person on our street with a Mac in the 80's and my best friend is pressuring me to buy a new Apple computer... oh yeah and I knew the names of the two Steve's of Apple... that was about the extent of my Apple knowledge prior to reading this book. However, I didn't need to know any more to be unable to put this book down until finished. The more I read about Steve Jobs, the more I wanted to know about him. My only distraction from being utterly entranced by this book was the same as with Disney War, so many names to keep track of! Nerd or not, if you want insight into one of the most influential leaders of our time - grab a copy.

            3 out of 5 stars Review: iCon.......2007-07-25

iCon Steve Jobs: The Greatest Second Act in the History of Business, retraces the dizzying path of successes and failures of entrepreneur and life long ambassador of technology Steve Jobs. Authors Jeffrey S. Young and William L. Simon produce an impressing and detailed account of Jobs' life and work which begins with Jobs' adoption and early childhood and ends with his (and Apple's) success with the iPod and iTunes. What lies in between describes Jobs' successes and his failures, his recklessness and his genius. The likeness Young and Simon paint of Steve Jobs is close to that of a hero; and like any great hero Jobs shows the ability to evolve with the use of his great strengths, despite his many flaws. iCon will be of special interest to Apple faithful as well as anyone interested in the history of personal computing or design.

I've just read this book in Russian (here in Russia we had no original book). I really love my Macbook, I love to watch Jobs' keynotes, but I never thought that he is such a strange, strong and discrepant person. Some times while reading I even couldn't believe, that all the story is about the same Steve Jobs I knew before!..
This book is must-read not only for Apple fans, but for everyone, who is fond of computer's history.

                Book Description

During the 1980s, widespread dissatisfaction with America's schools gave rise to a powerful movement for educational change, and the nation's political institutions responded with aggressive reforms. Chubb and Moe argue that these reforms are destined to fail because they do not get to the root of the problem. The fundamental causes of poor academic performance, they claim, are not to be found in the schools, but rather in the institutions of direct democratic control by which the schools have traditionally been governed. Reformers fail to solve the problem-when the institutions ARE the problem.

The authors recommend a new system of public education, built around parent-student choice and school competition, that would promote school autonomy-thus providing a firm foundation for genuine school improvement and superior student achievement.

4 out of 5 stars An Almost as Good Follow Up to the Best Bird Audio Ever!.......2002-01-26

This 2nd volume to Lang Elliott's excellent series follows the same format as the 1st. 35 common birds from Killdeer to Canadian Geese to various Owls and Woodpeckers are included. They are grouped into 5 categores: Open Country & Brushy Areas; Marsh, Lake, Stream & Swapm; Forest & Pinewoods; Northwoods & High Mountains and Saltmarsh & Seashore(though fortunately this does not change the track listing and seems to serve more as a thematic than a practical difference from the first volume).

The selection is not as inspired as the 1st and the series has been usurped by the easier to find (still in print as of this review) "Common Birds and their Songs" book and audio and the "Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs". Still, if you come across Vol. 2, I would recommend it.

This 2 volume set is great. It gives lots of bird sounds, including different kinds of calls for each bird. It seems accurate and is helpful for the serious or amateur bird watcher. Not that it matters a whole lot, but it comes in a nice looking, sturdy case too.
