Book Description
This companion volume to the author's Learning to Look at Paintings addresses some of the questions most commonly asked about modern art: why does it appear so different from the art of the past? Why is it so difficult to understand? How should we approach it?
Mary Acton suggests that the best way to understand modern art is to look closely at it, and to consider the different elements that make up each art work - composition, space and form, light and color and subject matter. Her engaging and beautifully-written guide to art of the modern and postmodern period covers key art movements including Expressionism, Constructivism, the Bauhaus, Surrealism, Pop Art, Conceptual Art and Young British Art, and artistic forms such as architecture and design, sculpture and installation as well as works on canvas. The book is richly illustrated with color and black and white images by the artists, designers and architects discussed, ranging from Picasso and Matisse to Le Corbusier, Andy Warhol and Rachel Whiteread.

Book Description
Written in side-splitting and often cringe-inducing detail, Paul Feig takes you in a time machine to a world of bombardment by dodge balls, ill-fated prom dates, hellish school bus rides, and other aspects of public school life that will keep you laughing in recognition and occasionally sighing in relief that you aren’t him.
Kick Me is a nostalgic trip for the inner geek in all of us.
Customer Reviews:
Takes us back to the not so good old days.......2007-09-15
Reading this book was like deja vu. I recognized a lot of moments from my own life being described by Feig. He has written a book about adolescence that is both funny and brutally truthful. If you grew up in the US and were a nerd, at least a handful of the situations Feig described has happened to you.
Feig's descriptions and turns of phrase are what make this book such a riot. He always seems to have the exact expression to describe the awkward feelings and sensations one experiences as a pre-teen. Feig's description of his discovery of the "rope feeling" was one of the funniest things I have read. The humor is often of the slapstick variety, but the fact that these are true tales makes them all the funnier. Feig doesn't pull his punches to make himself look good. In fact, he often seems to be going to lengths to make himself look ridiculous. He is unafraid to expose his own follies and foibles, and that is what makes the book so powerful.
Feig's ability to evoke a sense of childlike wonder at the discoveries of his youth also make this a powerful book. Feig is able to perfectly capture that mixture of wonder and fear that accompanies each discovery and small loss of innocence. I have never read another author who is so completely able to transport the reader back to his own childhood and adolescence. That is a tough trick to pull off and Feig does it with aplomb.
A masterwork about growing up in America. It will make you laugh and cringe at the same time.
These are the things that could break a mere boy.......2007-06-20
but Paul Feig was no mere boy. He was (is?) the ubergeek -- able to withstand the torments of dodgeball and other rites of passage and emerge a reasonably well-adjusted 24 year old virgin (see the sequel).
I'm amazed at the level of detail Paul is able to recall, but yet I learned in the sequel that he didn't keep a journal until college. The love and support of his parents is also remarkable.
My favorite story was about the bus drivers.
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-11
This is the companion book to "Superstud". I thoroughly identified with the growing pains of the author. I highly recommend this book!
We love you, Fig Newton!.......2006-12-31
I'm a HUGE fan of the cancelled (Why?!WHY!) series Freaks and Geeks, so of course when I learned the creator had written a series of stories about his own tortured adolescence, I had to have it. So many things that I loved about the tv series were present in Feig's memoirs. The gym class archipegalo rings particularly true for me. How well I remember the endless games of "Killer" (or "Battleball", as it was known in my school), the way even the most innocuous names could be twisted into something humiliating, the frightening "freak girls" who were worse than any male bully ever thought about being. From a former geek: It's obvious that he knows of which he speaks. And, as promised, he's gone on to do great things (please, please bring back Freaks and Geeks, please!), while his former tormentors probably lead dull and unimaginative lives.
For anybody who's survived middle school and looked back to see the humor~
Big Loser.......2006-11-08
I picked this book up because Amazon recommended it based on other books I liked. I was hoping for another Augusten Burroughs or David Sedaris. Instead, I found nothing interesting, unique, or even very funny about this book. The chapter on vomit did me in.

A GREAT book!.......1999-05-30
This book was a real treat going through. Loaded with photographs, it tells the story as a script, shows the design of the characters, and then shows the special effects, sets, and other cool stuff. It's a great soveneir of the musical, and if you haven't it's a great book to read to experience the musical if you can't experience it on Broadway
This book is wondefully elaborate and ornate........1998-09-05
This book is excellent. It is filled with gorgeous pictures from the Broadway musical. It also contains the complete lyrics and a story line of how the actual musical was produced. This is a definite for any musical theatre fan!

Book Description
A Cycle of Love Songs Translated by the Nobel Laureate
"Dappled woodland light,
Spring well chill and bright,
Eyes like stars at night,
Open knees so white.
Four things death itself won't cover,
Unforgettable forever."
In 1917, while reading his local newspaper, Leos Janacek discovered the poems that he was to set to music in his song cycle Diary of One Who Vanished. Written by Ozef Kalda and published anonymously, they tell the story of a farmer's boy who abandons his home because he has fallen in love with a Gypsy. These new English versions by Seamus Heaney were commissioned by the English National Opera for a series of international performances, which opened in Dublin in October 1999.

Actor and comedian Billy Crystal has forged a highly successful career by portraying other people in movies like When Harry Met Sally
and City Slickers. But in 700 Sundays, a memoir based on his one-man Broadway play of the same name, Crystal tells his own story, dissecting an often complex relationship with his father and how that relationship resonated in other aspects of his life. His father, Jack Crystal was an influential jazz concert promoter and operated an influential jazz record label, affording his son an opportunity to tell stories of being taken to his first movie by Billie Holliday and seeing his grandmother suggest that Louis Armstrong simply "try coughing it up." But Jack died when his son was fifteen years old, soon after a forever-unresolved argument between the two, leaving Billy to cope with crushing grief while simultaneously and perhaps ironically trying to launch a career in comedy. This lends 700 Sundays much needed gravity in a volume that is packed with zingy one-liners and whimsical observations that serve to illustrate the comedy career Crystal forged, while also providing some decent laughs. Interestingly, there is very little reference to the better known accomplishments of Crystal's Hollywood career as the author chooses to focus instead on the seemingly mundane but highly entertaining aspects of his Long Island roots. Though 700 Sundays (the name comes from Crystal's estimation of how many Sundays he got to spend with his father) is packaged here in book form, it reads like a piece of theater and, more specifically, like a selection of memories about a father, lovingly and touchingly re-told by his loving son. --John Moe

Customer Reviews:
As good as it gets.......2007-08-29
Imagine sitting down with the exceptional Billy Crystal for an evening and listening to him talk about his growing-up years in Long Beach, Long Island. This book sparkles with the man's gift for transforming the mundane and the seemingly normal into fodder for wonderfully engaging anecdotes. I loved it, all the more so given that I am of the same generation as Mr. Crystal and spent time in Long Beach myself (my grandparents lived in Long Beach and my mother and uncles were born there). A funnier and more touching memoire would be hard to come by. Highly recommended.
Very Enjoyable.......2007-07-24
This book brought me to the depth of emotions. I laughed (a lot) and cried a bit. Excellent and quick read for baby boomers.
You float with Crystal.......2007-05-18
I often find Crystal's live show much funnier 'cos it is more of his real personality/charisma, so, when I read his book, I felt that I was watching his live show in my own room. Just like I was in a boat with Crystal along his life river. Not only it was funny, but also I felt that I knew much more the way Billy grew up and the reasons why he looked at his life.
I Get It, He's A Jew!!!.......2007-05-01
That's not supposed to be anti-Semitic by the way.... I absolutely hated this book. I bought it thinking it would make me laugh, unfortunately only one part made me laugh (punching a guy in the balls during a basketball game - good stuff) other then that it was a pretty boring book in my opinion. While some of the stories were neat, a lot of it just got plain annoying. There seemed to be too many parts where Crystal tried to throw in some random stand-up material that had nothing to do with anything.
As far as the "I get it, he's a Jew" statement I had above... I've got no problem with Billy Crystal, and I've got no problem that he's Jewish but dear God does he need to mention it on every page!? That was almost as annoying as the random tangents!
Touching, Funny, True.......2007-03-16
The tough thing about reading books by comedians is that they seem to be missing something - the words need to be read aloud, not read silently in one's head. There is an element of that flatness in 700 Sundays, a memoir of Crystal's early years, but there's more than just a transcript of his monologues. Read between the jokes and you'll see the story of a family, from the great Uncle Berns to the sassy Aunt Sylvia, but most of all Crystal's nuclear family - his mom, dad, and the three sons.
From Yankee Stadium to Long Beach, New York, Crystal tells the tales that shaped him as a child and young adult. Early comedy performances for the extended families, hanging out with jazz greats like Billie Holliday, and plenty of brisket and noodle kugel.
Throughout it all is the poignancy of the early death of Crystal's father, and the hole he left behind.
Part Patricia Volk, part Neil Simon, 100 percent Crystal.

Not to worry---it's fine.......2007-04-26
Apparently, the Fox Noise machine has cranked out a lot of negative reviews on Burns here. But ignore all that. The book is fine and well-balanced. Burns has long been a first-rate historian and political scientist and there's no reason to doubt that now. The negative reviews are from the Karl Rove crowd.
Governmet? HA!.......2006-01-26
I absolutely hated this book, it gave little factual information on the srtucture and founding of our government. The book also had an enormous left wing bias which is definately inappropriate for a college class. Instructors please find another textbook that is more interesting and deals with function and structure of government {if you want your students to read it ;) }
HORRIBLE BOOK!
gooses review.......2005-07-12
The best features of this book include the charts which appear to have been all polled in new york state or california due to the leftist bias which makes me question the accuracy of any of the statistics. The thing that I liked least was the books negative attitude toward third parties which it attempted to emphasize as spoilers in political races. Besides that the side stories were interesting but of completely no use in showing how government works. The chapters were long and very repetative stating information several times as if it was new even though it had been explained several times before. The same examples were also used in many cases to explain different things. If you have a class with this book there is no point in reading the whole book. If you know nothing about political science you should read up to the last 4 chapters which are on rights and civil liberties this part is just common sense and can be largely opinionated.
I noticed a definite left tilt as well........2004-12-17
After having spent a semester taking a class requiring this book, I definitely noticed a rather liberal-leaning bias throughout most of the text. One of the obligations of national government, as stated by the text, is its "matter of fact" attitude that more wealthy individuals owe it to "impoverised" people through literally "taking money from more wealthy states" and giving it to poor states. Give me a break, there is so much socialism and liberal drivel in this book it made reading it a headache.
Profs and teachers, PLEASE find something a little more objective than this textbook. Sheesh!!!
Leftist propaganda not science.......2003-10-28
This book presents the issues in a twisted manner, and never teaches fundamental values. It does not discuss at all the Declaration of Independence, does not give nearly enough historical background and generally mystifies the foundations of American politics. The meaning and value of the Electoral College is not explained nor compared to the structure of the Senate and House. Well if that was mentioned it would tell too much. Instead you get the usual leftist posturing, "uh - it's so complicated - let us fix it for you". The misery of this book is most evident in the discussion of the First Amendment - it is declared contradictory. Of course their interpretation is contradictory but this is what they like, so this is what you get. Once a conflict is introduced, the familiar soap opera style takes over. If you are not into MTV this book is not for you. BTW, editions galore and the price is definitely not "for the poor".

Good condition and communication.......2005-09-26
The sender of this book did a great job of making sure that I knew what I had bought and also how it would be sent. This user is a very good source and I would buy from him again.
THe book itself is in good condition. It is similar to new, but not exactly. I have no complaints. There is not lots of scribling in the book or excessive highlighting. This is one book that exceeded my expectations in condition.
