Book Description
arsenalpulp.com :
On the heels of his bestselling and award-winning book Out/Lines: Underground Gay Graphics From Before Stonewall, Thomas Waugh offers more historical and erotically charged drawings, depicting aspects of gay male sexuality that were once hidden from public view.
The over 200, never-before-published images in Lust Unearthed nare from the private collection of Ambrose DuBek, a Hollywood costume and set designer (his work included George Cukor's 1939 film The Women) who died in 2002 at the age of 87, and whose estate included a wealth of erotic materials, including books, periodicals, prints, and films. DuBek was a passionate advocate and patron of the arts who felt that life and the body were to be celebrated; he had no patience for other people's attempts to make him feel guilty for his attractions and desires, nor any qualms about the different worlds in which he operated. The images from DuBek's collection published here are remarkably frank, explicit, and sometimes outrageous depictions of gay men "in action" created by numerous artists both famous and unknown, and produced during a time when even nude images of men were illegal, and thus rare. Lust Unearthed brings these images out of the boxes in which they are carefully kept and into a new queer world, where expressions of gay male sexuality can be validated and indeed, celebrated.
Waugh's text is a remarkable history lesson that illuminates a once-furtive underground culture. Gay porn for the thinking man, Lust Unearthed will beguile and arouse.
Features an introduction by Willie Walker, the founding archivist at the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender History Society in San Francisco, where DuBek's erotic materials were donated.
Finialist, Lambda Literary Award, Best Visual Arts Book

Amos Lassen and Literary Pride
Thomas Waugh seems to know where to find and then collect early gay erotic drawings. He has two volumes of them out. "Lust Unearthed" is a collection of drawings from the DuBek Collection which was housed in almost fifty large document boxes and is very, very erotic. DuBek had collected magazines and pen and inks between 1927 and the 1990's but the majority of the collection come form the 60's and 70's at which time gay male erotic culture came above ground. DuBek had catalogued them before his death and it is absolutely amazing. It did not become public until after his death but we have much of it now in this extensive book. Waugh went through the collection and chose certain selections for us. What we have is one of a kind--a representation of homoerotic doodles salvaged from before Stonewall. Waugh gathered it together obviously with love and the drawings are funny, sexy and very erotic. It is a fantastic historical document.
Waugh gives us the political and social climate for the drawings. The drawings themselves depict all aspects of male homosexual behavior There are more than 200 drawings contained in "Lust Unearthed" all from the apartment of Ambrose DuBek who was a film and television designer from the 40's to the 60's. He as a passionate advocate and patron of the arts who felt that not just life was to be celebrated but the body as well. What he had were frank, explicit, sometimes funny, sometimes outrageous depictions of men. They were created by both famous and unknown artists and were produced at a time when nude male drawings were illegal thereby making them rare.
Waugh has written a remarkable narrative that is an interesting history lesson which sheds light on a culture once clothed in darkness. Here is gay porn for the man who thinks. The book not only sensually arouses but beguiles.
A Pleasure of a Book.......2007-01-12
I am so glad that I bought this book. I had read Thomas Waugh's other title "Hard to Imagine" and I found this book to be just as well written. The images in this book are amazing.

Best of Eastern Europe.......2007-09-03
A must for all who have experienced in Eastern Europe in the nineties. A sort of mix of experiences from CZ, Poland and the likes. You wonder wether the authors were not sitting at the next door table at Radost.
Fake Travel Guides for Laughs.......2007-05-06
A friend showed me one of the books in this series (Phaic-Tan) and it was such a riot that I ordered it as well as others in the series the same day. This is a strange planet, where some countries can send people to the moon and back, and other peoples are still living in the Stone Age, with a whole lot of humanity somewhere in between. That makes for a lot of potential sarcastic humor, which is what we see in these guidebooks to countries that do not actually exist. Humanity, laugh at yourself! If you have ever travelled in the Second or Third World much, a lot of these creative sketches will make it possible to grin over what may have been a painful or frustrating experience at the time. The books are fun... although I sometimes wondered if they were not perhaps made up by escaped creative writers from Monty Python's Flying Circus.
Mixture of funny, mediocre and inappropriate jokes.......2007-05-05
Molvania is a mock travel guide for a fictitious Eastern European country. The book is ripe with stereotypes about Eastern Europe. I am an Eastern European and this book made me laugh at first. The jokes about the "brusqueness" of the Eastern European waiters, the propensity to overcharge Western European tourists and the abrupt phone manners of the local population are quite good.
The authors, of course, don't stop at that. On page 24, they make fun of the Eastern Orthodox religion. Conveniently called "Baltic Orthodox", the Eastern Orthodoxy is described as "a local form of worship very similar to Catholicism, except that Catholics long ago dismissed the concept of the world being flat"?! I find this offensive. Then, on page 26, they go on to say that the language contains several phonetic sounds which could "represent either a rare dialect or merely peasants clearing their throats"?! Again, that's just inappropriate regardless which language the authors have in mind.
I am giving Molvania two stars to acknowledge that some of my Eastern European friends love this book. I, on the other hand, will return it to NYPL and will be quite contented if I never see it again.
Parody of Fodor's Travel Guides.......2006-11-16
"Molvania" is reported by some to be the inspiration for the movie "Borat" - plausible, because there are similarities. Nonetheless, it is clear that "Molvania" itself was inspired as a parody of Fodor's Travel Guides. Included are the usual sections on History, Geography, Religion, How to Get Around, Where to Stay, etc. Every section is replete with jokes, and overall almost makes one want to go to Movania. Unfortunately, Molvania doesn't exist, at least according to my globe and the Internet. (On the other hand, where is the Internet?)
Almost Complete, a Slight Oversight However.......2006-08-31
As a Molvanian native, I thought at first that this is yet another one of those soulless Western monographs, good only to patronize and condescend to the locals.
Imagine my surprise then when, on close scrutiny, I found how the team at JETLAG has managed to compile an accurate and actually useful guide, an opus that will serve well all travelers, past and future, to Molvania and beyond. I find that the maps especially are a treat in their accuracy and detail, especially considering that you cannot buy maps in Molvania proper. Details of cuisine and local customs are also accurately captured, and their flavor stays with you even longer than the hangover.
There is one omission in this travel guide, however, one that I hope will be addressed in future editions: a section addressing the needs of business travelers is sorely lacking, and visiting business persons will find that they need all the help they can get while transacting their affairs with Molvanian tycoons.
Otherwise, a well deserved five stars.
PS - To all Molvanians and neighboring natives who have spoken negatively on this one: please lighten up, this is a fine read (two minutes at a time), one of the best jokes related to that part of the world, enjoy it!

Customer Reviews:
This is fun!.......2005-06-12
What's a chick flick? If I have to explain, this book is NOT for you. Most women know intuitively what they think makes a "chick flick," but after reading this Guide, they will understand what elements make up the best chick flicks; the ones we gush to girlfriends, "You have just got to see!"
American's movie sweetheart (someone women will love as much as men do) today is Julia Roberts, with Meg Ryan and Sandra Bullock close behind. Can we think of Meg Ryan without remembering the scene in "When Sally Met Harry." We ALL wanted what she was having.
Did you join millions of women who bought a polka-dot dress after seeing a bad girl become a fashion plate in "Pretty Woman"? You get the idea. We buy into these heroines, what they wear and how they treat men (and are treated by men).
I loved these subtitles under How to Create the Perfects Romance.
1. Create a sympathetic heroine.
2. Offer up a love-worthy hero (we know, the Tom Hanks type).
3. Don't forget the best friend.
4. Something is wrong with the heroine type.
5. They meet.
6. Toss in impediment to the romance.
7. They dance.
8. Memorable moment (like Angela Bassett torching her wandering husband's car in "Waiting to Exhale." You go girl!).
9. The hero employs the three magic words.
10. Achieve the ultimate happy (or unhappy ending).
I highly recommend this book as fodder for girlfriend conversation over a fudge brownie sundae. It made me check out my video (yes, video) supply. There I found almost every one of the often-watched movies mentioned in the book. Am I into chick flicks, or what?
Love Chick Flicks!!.......2005-03-15
I thought this book was so much fun and quite handy!
I especially thought the pop quiz section was a lot of fun. I've already played with my girlfriends. And I love the "chick flick" recommendations...I would have thought I had seen all "chick flick" films, but boy was I wrong! I better get my butt to Blockbuster....Happy renting Gals!
This Book Is Sweet.......2005-03-09
i think the best part about this book is that it has movies for everyone cuz usually it's just like for people who are older and stuff. why don't more books have stuff for people who aren't like a million years old and things that's why this book is cool because it has movies for people who like weren't born in the 70's. what's up? this book rocks.
Kim Adelman Does It Again.......2005-03-09
Word on the street is that "The Ultimate Guide to Chick Flicks" is a worthy companion to Ms. Adelman's other critically acclaimed books. I was very pleased to have this exhaustively rearched book handy when looking for movies to add to Netflix. I will not have to suffer through another bad Ashley Judd film...thank you Kim!
The Quintessential Guide to Chick Flicks!.......2005-03-08
What is not to LOVE about this book? It's fun, totally handy, and it makes the perfect gift! I already bought a copy for my little sister. All of my favorite movies (and tons I never knew about) are listed, deconstructed, and discussed in this super-fun book. The calendar section which lists a chick flick-a-day is my favorite bit! I'm totally taking this book with me to Blockbuster.

Book Description
Alan Lomax is a legendary figure in American folk music circles. Although he published many books, hundreds of recordings and dozens of films, his contributions to popular and academic journals have never been collected. This collection reintroduces these essential writings. Drawing on the Lomax Archives in New York, this book brings together articles from the '30s onwards. It is divided into four sections, each capturing a distinct period in the development of Lomax's life and career: the original years as a collector and promoter; the period from 1950-58 when Lomax was recording thorughout Europe; the folk music revival years; and finally his work in academia.

An inexpensive way to get an AT-ST and FOUR great new maps.......2007-06-01
The Attack on Endor Scenario Pack includes one huge and three regular size figures with stats cards: 1 AT-ST, 1 Scout Trooper, 1 Stormtrooper, and 1 Stormtrooper Officer. On the plus side, this set comes with two great new double-sided maps (FOUR MAPS TOTAL! - Endor's Moon, Rancor Pit, Yavin 4, and Jedi Temple). It also includes a short scenario booklet (similar to those presented in the Ultimate Missions books, but these new scenarios that have not been published before). On the minus side, though this AT-ST is sculpted a bit differently than the one from the Universe minis set, it is basically the same figure (i.e., it looks different, but the stats are all the same). Further, the three other figures are reissues of figures from the Rebel Storm set. But, the AT-ST from the universe set is a rare figure, and therefore fairly difficult to get. When you buy this set, you are guaranteed to get one.
In sum, this is a fairly inexpensive way to get an AT-ST for your Star Wars minis collection. But perhaps the best part of this scenario pack is the new maps; they look great and will surely add a number of great new possibilities to your Star Wars minis games.

Book Description
This work features interviews with 51 leading ladies who starred in B-westerns, A-westerns, and television westerns. Some were well-known and others were not, but they all have fascinating stories to tell and they talk candidly about their careers and the many difficulties that went along with their jobs. Back then, conditions were often severe, locations were often harsh, and pay was often minimal. The actresses were sometimes the only females on location and they had to provide their own wardrobe and do their own make-up, as well as discourage the advances of over-affectionate co-stars. Despite these difficulties, most of the women interviewed for this agree that they had fun. Claudia Barrett, Virginia Carroll, Francis Dee, Lisa Gaye, Marie Harmon, Kathleen Hughes, Linda Johnson, Ruta Lee, Colleen Miller, Gigi Perreau, Ann Rutherford, Ruth Terry, and June Vincent are among the 51 actresses interviewed.

Book Description
This is the mass market edition of the popular book by Dr. Ben Carson whose inspiring story tells of a frustrated inner-city kid whose faith in God helped him become director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital.
Customer Reviews:
Biographies .......2007-10-16
Inspirational book regarding an afro-americana male that overcame terrific odds and became a world famous neurosurgeon and who gives credit to God for his abilities and mother's upbringing for him and his brother in becoming an engineer.
It would be great it his book could be translate to Spanish an other languages which would reach other children an adults.
This is an amazing book........2007-08-25
I was assigned this book for my high school reading list and i thought it would be incredibly boring.I was really surprised by the mix of medical terms and personal circumstances. This is probably the best book I have ever read.
Inspiration.......2007-07-24
I enjoyed this book very much. I am a pre-med student, and I think all pre-med student get discouraged at one point because of all the hard work. Before I read this book, I was nervous about my upcoming semester with the work load. Reading about Dr. Carson's story gave me the extra push I needed to take on the next semester with a little more needed ambition.
The Stuff Heroes Are Made Of........2007-07-13
When you think of a hero, what comes to mind? Bruce Willis in a Die Hard movie? Rocky, perhaps? After reading Gifted Hands, there was no doubt in my mind that Ben Carson is a hero.
The most amazing thing is, that upon reading this book, you will realize that he does not regard himself as such. He humbly acknowledges that he is a child of God and that he is out to put out his best efforts in this world. Ben is a gentle giant - he is a highly capable individual with the ability to save lives - and although he is a person that merits much respect, he acknowledges the value of every human as just that: a human. In other words, he considers himself an equal with someone who, for example, sells cotton candy on the beach for a living.
I rated the books five stars because it is so inspirational. Through his well told story- that of a economically handicapped youth in a segregated society who becomes one of the world's best neurosurgeons - he shows us that there are no excuses in life. We all have obstacles - some small, some mammoth - but we can all pull strength from ourselves and God to make something great of ourselves. His faith and virtues have taken quite far in his life - and it has been accomplished by giving his best efforts each day.
Highly recommended reading for everyone - especially anyone facing hard times that make them feel like they cannot be their best - the book engagingly gives us very practical advice.
Inspirational Pioneer.......2007-07-03
If you're looking for an inspirational, I-can-do-it-too book for high school students, this is the one. Having gone from ghetto child to pediatric neurologist, Carson not only recounts his own journey but offers advice to young people as well as their parents. The life and death stories are page turners.

The B-17 Flying Fortress - the most successful US bomber of the Second World War Full design, production and modification record Extensively illustrated Operational history of every individual aircraft
Customer Reviews:
Book title misleading.......2001-06-01
When I first saw this book in hardcover, I jumped on it. After seeing the hardcover price, however, and what was "inside" I found I could leave it on the shelf.
This book is basically the aircraft history of every single B-17 ever built. Now, if that's what you're looking for - then this book is for you. If, however, you're looking for the comprehensive narrative history of the B-17 Flying Fortress that you "thought" this book was going to give you -- keep looking. That's not what this is.
Now that it's in paperback, I MIGHT consider purchasing it. As someone has said, this is like the "B-17 telephone book". It's an awesome reference work on each individual aircraft just like they maintain at the USAF Historical Research Agency in Montgomery, Alabama. For many, this book is ideal. For most of us, that's probably way too much detailed airframe information than we care for.
The B-17 Flying Fortress Story.......2000-11-23
I was rather disappointed with the content of the book. Over 70% of it has little to do with "story" as the title promises. The majority of the book is more like a telephone book, with a 250-page (out of the total 319 pages) listing of 12,731 B-17s. Each of the entries starts with a US Army serial number assinged to the aircraft, followed by a series of dates and proper names (i.e., the aircraft's base assignments while in the U.S.). The length of the entries can be anywhere between 2 to 10 lines. The book is a valuable companion for B-17 experts or for people who has a passion for certain recorded facts about those 12,731 B-17s listed. And the 250-page listing is obviously an admirable outcome of strenuous work. But I would not recommend this book to people who want to read touching and exciting stories of or about the Flying Fortress. I have a feeling that I was misled by the book's title.
The B-17 telephone book.......2000-11-04
This books announces itself on its back cover as the "ultimate illustrated history of the B-17." But it certainly doesn't qualify as that, and even the title is rather deceptive. The book really is devoted to giving a very short, condensed history (about four lines, in three columns) of every single B-17 ever built. It is a work of reference, and an impressive one, rather than a story. This compilation fills 249 of the 319 pages of the book, leaving just 60 pages devoted to telling the story of the B-17. And that is too short, of course, to contain a complete, thorough treatment of the B-17's service life: Better accounts of that have been published elsewhere. This part still contains contain some quite interesting information, nevertheless. To conclude, this is a very valuable book to have if you are deeply interested in the story of the B-17, but it isn't what it pretends to be. Therefore, it rather disappointed me; but for some readers this will be exactly what they want.
This book is an excellent reference source on the B-17........1998-11-12
Anyone familiar with the history of the B-17 and, in particular, the Eighth Air Force, knows the name of Roger Freeman. Author of the reknowned series beginning with "The Mighty Eighth", Freeman and co-author David Osborne assembled a new volume entitled "The B-17 Flying Fortress Story." This new book fills a gap in the literature about the Flying Fortress. The first quarter of the book covers the type in general, from initial design through production and modifications. Included here are excerpts from technical orders and operating manuals. Also included are a selection of somewhat rare photos and a special section on the Wright R-1820 engine. Of greater significance to the student of the B-17, however, are the last three quarters of the book. This section provides individual aircraft histories for each of the 12,700-odd B-17s produced by the consortium of Boeing, Douglas, and Lockheed between 1935 and 1945. This massive undertaking was apparently performed by Osborne reviewing each of the individual military record cards available and tying that information to other available sources. Thus, having the military serial of a particular B-17 (say, for example, from a photograph) enables a reader to see where that aircraft came from and its eventual disposition. The information is, by necessity, brief but usually contains specifics on an aircraft if it was lost in action. There are a few noted errors, surpisingly, for those B-17s which survived to enjoy civil service as that information is available elswhere in detailed form. Other editing errors (i.e. the book refers to the `Reclamation Finance Centre' (RFC) vs. the actual `Reconstruction Finance Corporation') may appear but such minor things can be overlooked in such a gigantic effort.

Book Description
Young, Gifted, and Black is a unique joint effort by three leading African-American scholars to radically reframe the debates swirling around the achievement of African-American students in school. In three separate but allied essays, Theresa Perry, Claude Steele, and Asa Hilliard place students' social identity as African-Americans at the very center of the discussion. They all argue that the unique social and cultural position Black students occupy, in a society which often devalues and stereotypes African American identity, fundamentally shapes students' experience of school and sets up unique obstacles. And they all argue that a proper understanding of the forces at work can lead to practical, powerful methods for promoting high achievement at all levels. Theresa Perry argues that African-American students face dilemmas, founded in the experience of race and ethnicity in America, that make the task of achievement distinctive and difficult. (For instance: "How do I commit myself to achieve, to work hard over time in school, if I cannot predict when or under what circumstances this hard work will be acknowledged and recognized?") She uncovers a rich and powerful African- American philosophy of education, historically forged against such obstacles and capable of addressing them, by reading African-American narratives from Frederick Douglass to Maya Angelou. She carefully critiques the most popular theoretical explanations for group differences in achievement. And she lays out how educators today-in a postcivil rights era-can draw on theory and on the historical power of the African-American philosophy and tradition of education to reorganize the school experience of African-American students.

Helpful, though stronger on philosophies than strategies.......2006-07-25
I'm currently researching strategies for successful SAT work with low scoring students. Having read the academically oriented "Black White Test Score Gap", I decided to pick this up to find some additional strategies for working with low scoring students.
This book is divided into three essays and they have three distinct focuses. Theresa Perry's essay is very philosophical. She argues that there is a literacy tradition in black America that is often overlooked as we seek solutions to educational problems. "Freedom for literacy and literacy for freedom" is a tradition that shows how in slavery times and the segregated 20th century we have seen literacy as a key for full citizenship. Perry looks at narratives to find common themes in stories that argue for literacy as a black value.
I found this essay helpful because I can recall my own awakenings reading "Roots" and "Autobiography of Malcolm X" where I felt more empowered and assertive as I realized that my struggles and frustrations were common to the black experience. I felt that the theory and philosophy of this essay was stronger than the solutions, however. I would also like to have seen how mathematical and technological literacy could have been incorporated into this theory.
Claude Steele's "Stereotype Threat" essay is an update on some things he's written in magazines and is a more accessible version of an essay that he authored in "Black-White Test Score Gap". I found this essay to be far more helpful than the more technical description of his work in "Black White Test Score Gap". Here he argues that we have to address self-imposed pressures of high scoring students to help them succeed in testing environments and help them work more efficiently. This articulation of his theory seemed to be aimed more for the educators applying his ideas than the psychologists assessing them. As a teacher, I felt included in the discussion.
Asa Hilliard's presence in this volume was peculiar for me. He's an Afrocentrist and uses the term "Africans" to describe black Americans. Personally, I don't like that term because I value the unique jazz and cultural contributions of black Americans over an afrocentric past. He details success stories at the elementary level and is highly critical of the educational literature. This essay bothered me because it did not offer much that I could use as a high school teacher. Also, this seemed to argue for "superteachers" without speaking to the supply and demand of the highly qualified and highly trained labor he seeks. Yes, it's good to detail how wonderful a school is that you consulted for and how these successes should be researched. This essay basically said "we need better teachers", but did not do enough to show me how we would get them or how he has unique training and empowerment models. I felt this was the weakest of the three essays although I'll probably look up some of the model schools and teachers he mentions at some point.
All in all, this is a good book for educators to read. I'd focus on Steele's essay and the first half of Perry's essay first and skim the second half of Perry and all of Hilliard second. Those who are more Afrocentrist and elementary educators will find Hilliard's essay more helpful than I did.
Decent book, I recommend it with qualifications.
3.5 stars.
