Book Description

1 out of 5 stars Penosa edición, mal libro.......2007-06-07

3 out of 5 stars OTRO PUNTO DE VISTA.......2007-04-08

Malinalli.

1 out of 5 stars Decepcionante.......2006-11-26

4 out of 5 stars Un nuevo perfil.......2006-07-31

1 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2007-02-21

I wanted to like this book because I'm always looking for a good historical mystery series. The setting seemed promising--an English manor house during WWII. Unfortunately, that's as good as it gets. The heroine is completely unlikeable, and she is surrounded by characters who are flat, annoying, or downright unbelievable (particularly the butler, who is portrayed about as realistically as the "Uncle Teddy" character in Arsenic and Old Lace). The mystery itself held no interest for me, and the resolution was deeply unsatisfying. Overall, the book seemed amateurish and hastily thrown together. I don't usually write reviews, but in this case, I felt like I should warn potential readers not to expect much.

3 out of 5 stars A bland beginning.......2003-12-29

The Manor House mysteries are a relatively new series by author Doreen Roberts writing under the pen name of Kate Kingsbury. In this, the first title in the series, we are introduced to Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton, lady of the Manor and, of course, amateur sleuth. She is the perfect, old-fashioned English lady who always wears a hat and skirts - never trousers - drinks tea as often as it is offered to her; and "...often thought how wonderful it must have been to live in an age when women were cherished and pampered." (page 13) Although her thoughts are clearly Victorian, Lady Elizabeth knows how to take the bull by the horns when the occasion calls for it; after all "...the ability to command attention (...) was the only way to get things done." (page 3)

It's WWII, and the idyllic village of Sitting Marsh is experiencing all the backlash: food rationing, constant worry, and the added stress for the locals to have to deal with Americans, whom are considered "barbarians" (page 8). Problems arise simultaneously for Elizabeth: on the one hand, she is told about the disappearance (and subsequent murder) of a local girl; on the other, she is approached by the American Major of the Regiment assigned to the village, with an order coming directly from the War Office, clearly stating that she is to surrender her house to be quarters for the American soldiers. Elizabeth is tangled in a web of murder and rivalries in the role of keeper of the peace between the locals - with her own housekeeper and senile butler in tow - when the murdered girl's mother approaches her with a special request: to find her daughter's killer. Elizabeth, as lady of the Manor, cannot say no. The reader will accompany Elizabeth in her errands to find information, savoring all the typical English camaraderie, which consists mainly, of lots of tea and "proper" gossip. I did enjoy the idea of the Manor House as center for a typical British cozy; however, the whole idea of the war distracted me in my search for it. Experiencing some of the frustration Elizabeth feels when trying to interpret the clues she finds, I just couldn't find myself in the story. I was looking for a cozy mystery, but seemed to be reading a war story all the time (something I find personally boring). I also found out whodunit right before the end of the book; however, unless the reader is familiar with this type of story, he or she won't. I can only hope the next books in the series do not throw WWII into the story as much; but rather present it as a background.

It is rather appropriate as well, that Kingsbury chose Norfolk as the geographical place for Sitting Marsh. The county of Norfolk has for a long time been one that Royalty has made their favorite for their private residences: Sandringham House, the Queen's winter retreat; and Park House, the place where Princess Diana grew up, are located in this part of the country.

The dedication at the beginning of the book is probably one of the best ones I have come across: "This book is dedicated to the men, women, and children of Great Britain who kept the home fires burning during the Second World War with unswerving humor, unwavering courage, and the indispensable cup of tea." Just by that, one can guess what's going to be on the plate right away.

3 out of 5 stars Good enough way to spend a couple of hours.......2002-04-21

Adequate start to a new series. However, the characters are a bit stereotypical and Lady Elizabeth is not particularly likeable. Easy Read.

2 out of 5 stars Kingsbury needs to do her research.......2002-03-27

The mystery in this book was OK, but there are so many errors and anachronisms that I was put off. The one that bothered me most - and it would have been so easy for an alert editor to catch - was that apparently the heroine's father has a living brother. Anyone familiar with the British peerage would have known that this brother would definitely have the title and probably the ancestral manor as well. Lady Elizabeth would be entitled only to what was not entailed. What's so annoying is the reference to this uncle was totally gratuitous. It could easily have been her mother's brother, or her father's sister's husband, or the paragraph could have been omitted entirely.

This is not an auspicious beginning to a series. I hope Kingsbury spends a little time getting to know her subject better.

4 out of 5 stars A new series now that the Pennyfoot has closed.......2002-01-13

Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton has returned to her ancestral home after the death of her parents and the break up of her marriage. Thanks to her ex, there is little money left. She is trying to pick up the pieces of her life during the stressful time of World War II. She lives in her childhood home with the housekeeper Violet and the senile butler Martin. The lack of money has not diminished her status of lady of the manor however, so when a local girl disappears, her mother asks Lady Elizabeth rather than the police to find her. When Beryl is later found dead, Lizzie has a far more serious job, to find the murderer. The village is sure that it is one of the American soldiers stationed nearby, but Lizzie isn't so sure, especially since some of their officers have requisitioned her home as their new quarters.

While I will miss the Pennyfoot Hotel series, this is a very good replacement. The characters are a little strange, but very realistic, and the mystery was very good. I look forward to reading the next one.

5 out of 5 stars This was the book I was looking for..........2001-11-29

...when I lost my wife. I looked for two hours in the bookstore before I found this, and I found a lot of books that sandwiched children's grief reactions to death with grief reactions to divorce, moving, etc. I was looking for something specific, not being sure how to help my daughter when I felt I was being crushed under my own grief. I read the first few pages, where Jim Emswiler describes the death of his first wife, and I knew I had found what I was looking for. This book never did disappoint.

If you need it, this is, in my opinion, THE book for families with grieving children.

I just finished this book and I am reading it again - a thoughtful, well written book that would be helpful to any family member, friend, or future family member of a grieving child. A wonderful book for a difficult time.

5 out of 5 stars Compassionate and practical help for grieving families.......2001-07-16

This is an excellent book for parents of children dealing with all phases of loss. They explain how children of different ages perceive death in different ways.

The authors go beyond the basics. They give specific advice on how to talk to children about different types of death including cancer, suicide and murder. They discuss different ways to rebuild after the loss. I particularly liked the section on stepparenting the grieving child.

The Emswilers balance illuminating vignettes with theory and advice. The chapters are organized so that one can pick and choose, based on one's particular needs.

this book is terrific,I bought it so that i could help my 4 children deal with the death of my husband and their grandmother within 3 months of each other plus 2 young friends at the same time .Not only has it helped me help them ,but it has helped me the mother even more. I thought I was losing my mine for a while,4 special needs children who we had adopted already had great grief.I had ordered many books looking for help but this one is so great I can't put it down and now I am going to order it for some other people who share the same difficult days.I highly recommened this book to any one who has lost a love one, child or adult, you will not be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars A holistic approach to childhood grief!.......2000-08-23

The much anticipated book about child/adolescent grief by the Emswilers deserves a place in the library of anyone who works with young children and teens. Experiencing the deep loss of a loved one is a frightening, confusing experience for children and parents. Sharing their years of personal insights and anecdotes in dealing with grieving youth, this book proceeds beyond the basics of childhood grief and explains how grief affects the family, how to communicate with grieving children, creating and using "holding communities", and rituals that might help. They take us through the minefield of adolescent grief and provide critical information that will help you help your teens deal with grief. They reassure us to "be patient and don't worry, they do come back." This easy-to-read, down-to-earth, sometimes humorous book also delves into dealing with issues that are oftentimes not addressed, such as complicated mourning, caring for care givers, step parenting a grieving child, and tips for teachers and health professionals. There is also a questions and answer section and an excellent bibliography for further readings. This is an important reference I'm sure care givers will access for help throughout the childhood years.

I disagree with the other review. I think the book has some interesting ideas about collecting and/or displaying your collection. In particular, I was delighted by the "color collections". If you like collecting lots of different little things, the color idea in the book is a good one. The pictures are great, and it is a wonderful coffee table book.

The version of Collections that I read had a diferent cover so maybe the one on Amazon(.com) is a newer/better edition, but I doubt its better. I've read a few books on collections and have yet to be satisfied by any of them. I think that collections are a difficult topic to cover because no one book can cover every collection out there, and the choice of which collections to present must be diffiult one. That said, these books should at least have collections displayed in such a way that the ideas can be applied to a wide variety of collections. However, these book seem to either present the collections in an ideosyncratic manner or in so basic a manner you could figure it out for yourself.

                      Recommendation:
I think the people that will enjoy this book will be the ones that happen to find their particular collection within its pages. Otherwise, every other decorating book can give you some ideas.

                        Book Description

The villas of Andrea Palladio have been among the most influential buildings in history. Drawing on the architect's original published legacy of forty-odd designs, George Hersey and Richard Freedman reveal the rigorous geometric rules by which Palladio conceived these structures. Where most earlier attempts to analyze the villas are mere lists of numbers and ratios that ignore space distribution, the present rules produce actual designs. Using a computer, the authors test each rule in every possible application, establishing a degree of validity not possible in ad hoc analyses. Progressing from the architect's most obvious to his subtlest ideas, the computer ultimately creates villa plans and facades that are stylistically indistinguishable from those of Palladio himself.

Possible Palladian Villas opens the way to similar analyses of other such "paradigmatic" designs, whether Chinese screens, Greek temples, baroque churches, or Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie Houses. In fact a new approach to architectural history emerges: we can study designs that a given master might have produced but did not. Palladio's actual buildings, along with those of his generations of imitators, are set into the context not only of a new theory but of a new type of theory.

Along with the Macintosh disk that runs the program, Possible Palladian Villas will fascinate the design community and students of architectural style, symmetry, and geometry. It will fill architectural historians with bracing dismay.

George Hersey is Professor of the History of Art at Yale University. Richard Freedman, who designed the computer program, is a product marketer working on MS-DOS at the Microsoft Corporation.

5 out of 5 stars A very intriguing and enjoyable study........2003-07-12

An initial enthusiastic interest in classicism in architecture led to my attending architecture school. This is a book I read during my first term, and I really enjoyed it tremendously. Very instructive as an introduction to the ideas of classical/renaissance architectural theory, as well as fun and "hands-on" with the included software. A previous reviewer seems to feel that the writing unfortunately pretentious. For better or for worse, however, almost all serious art and architectural writing has this kind of quality--or at least appears this way to those who aren't used to seriously thinking about ideas of aesthetics. It shouldn't put one off. The book is substantial, and fun at the same time. I enthusiastically recommend it.

An attempt to divine the mathematical rules governing room dimensions of Palladio's Renaissance buildings using computer software. One must give the author credit for the large amount of research involved, all documented in its extensive bibliography.

5 out of 5 stars Very neat little app for students of Palladio.......2000-04-18

This Macintosh program is the same software used by the authorsof Possible Palladian Villas. After reading the book and learning anumber of interesting aspects to Palladio's work that no other author has ever discussed so clearly I became very curious about this software program and how it generated Palladian villas.

The software -- which is quite dated now and only runs on System 7.x -- is a simple little application that generates Palladian plans using an algorithm created by the authors. This algorithm is based on the principles of planning as determined by an exhaustive investigation of Palladio's villas (44 villas to be exact were used). It can generate an infinate number of permutations based on the metrics of subdivision and proportion used by Palladio. You give the program the total outside dimensions in Vincentine feet and it does the rest.

Facademaker is the part that allows you to choose an appropriate facade type - based on Palladio's range of facade types (approximately three with various derivations). From there exterior and interior openings in the walls are generated.

A very useful tool for an indepth scholarly study of Palladio's architecture. Highly recommended (the book too!)

Ring Lardner, Jr.’s memoir is a pilgrimage through the American century. The son of an immensely popular and influential writer, Lardner grew up swaddled in material and cultural privilege. After a memorable visit to Moscow in 1934, he worked as a reporter in New York before leaving for Hollywood where he served a bizarre apprenticeship with David O. Selznick, and won, at the age of 28, an Academy Award for Woman of the Year, the first on-screen pairing of Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. In “irresistibly readable” pages (New Yorker), peopled by a cast including Carole Lombard, Louis B. Mayer, Dalton Trumbo, Marlene Dietrich, Otto Preminger, Darryl F. Zanuck, Bertolt Brecht, Bert Lahr, Robert Altman, and Muhammad Ali, Lardner recalls the strange existence of a contract screenwriter in the vanished age of the studio system—an existence made stranger by membership in the Hollywood branch of the American Communist Party. Lardner retraces the path that led him to a memorable confrontation with the House Un-American Activities Committee and thence to Federal prison and life on the Hollywood blacklist. One of the lucky few who were able to resume their careers, Lardner won his second Oscar for the screenplay to M.A.S.H. in 1970.

1 out of 5 stars Alice in Wonderland is a better FICTIONAL book !!!.......2004-03-07

I can not believe this. I am glad I found this book at a cheap second-hand book store ... I would have had to heave if I had paid full price.

This would be funny if it were not for the horrid nightmarish communist atrocities that these writers' supported. Communists (people ... listen) are worse than the nazis!!! The commies butchered 10 million innocent people (on record ... and that's only the former USSR alone!). These "blacklisted" people are #1 traitors to the USA (The Am. Comm. Party promotes VIOLENT OVERTHROW OF THE EXISTING GOVERNMENT) AND #2 Real Communists - heck, read the transcripts yourself !!!!!!!!!! People, you can not be that naive! Someone told me once, if the nazis won the war and the USSR communists lost (you know, role reversal), that these same "blacklisted" people would be nazis and McCarthy would have been found out to be Jewish and probably hung. And, reviewers would be hailing the courageous "BLACKLISTED" American nazi party members. Because at this point, like it is now, TRUTH IS RELATIVE!

What can I say???? This is a blatant slap in the face at the truth. Look at his sources ... I mean ...come on!!! The authors are dedicated and determined to stick the knife in the gut of the truth (and they do not mind all the blood ... because he is sticking it in deep).

Heck, there are so many documents and books that prove this book is, at most, only be used as a stabilizer for an uneven table. But I just used the pages for the bottom of my bird cage .... heck, no one will notice the crap on crap ... will they???

People Listen!!! These same people blacklisted just changed their names and went on. The real backlist contained those people who testified AGAINST THEM. They were out of their jobs (ain't hollywood great). One more interesting deal to look into. These poor American Commies that were supposedly blacklisted? Look where they are now (there is this book, written by a liberal, about 8 on the blacklist - I can not recall the name), they are behind the most perverse and commie-leaning movies and tv shows ever made in the USA!!!

Now it has always been my opinion that the Hollywood communists were more Lenin leaning than, say, the American political communists. AND, one main point of the Leninists is to tear-down the morals of the society . De-root them at all costs AND HE STRESSED FAMILY AND RELIGION to be the main focus. This makes the people easy prey and a DEPENDANT, SHEEPISH group of slaves but willing people ready for indoctrination by a strong centralized government. The evil Lenin was actually pretty smart ... for a communist. Most of the others are highly over-rated. Like Marx, he stole almost everything he wrote (mostly from philosophers - ancient and modern); he was really ignorant and Engels was just a rich spoiled brat supporting him (the bum-hero Marx). It's a joke that it lasted as long as it did. Well ... not a joke because millions of innocent people died. They are as bad as the nazis ... but you will never hear it from these blacklisted people contained in this book ... their blinded by their loyalty to "the cause".

Actually, this book makes me mad. They were communists and they did harm patriots who turned them in.

5 out of 5 stars Spoken Softly, Hard Hitting.......2002-04-13

Less an autobiography and more a series of reflections, philosophies, and anecdotes, I'd Hate Myself In The Morning is a slender but superb work by one of the most underrated writers America has ever produced. I say underrated because he was not only competing with the legacy of his famous father, but also because of his experiences with the blacklist and his subsequent emergence from that period, all of which Lardner discusses with a candor that is very engaging, honest, and thought-provoking. In noting that he passed away shortly after the book was published, it casts a very eerie, but not creepy, shadow over the last chapter in which he discusses his views on mortality and death. A very quick read and well worth it.

                              5 out of 5 stars Lardner's Farewell.......2000-12-20

Ring Lardner, Jr. died shortly after the publication of _I'd Hate Myself in the Morning_ (Thunder's Mouth Press), at the age of eighty-five. He was the last of the famous Hollywood Ten, those who were jailed by the House Un-American Activities Committee for being Communists. He also landed on the blacklist, unable to get the studio work he had previously and lucratively enjoyed with Twentieth Century Fox. He was a hero to many, but his humorous, delightfully self-effacing memoir shows he didn't think he fit that role. He writes, "I try to suggest that we weren't as heroic as people make us out to be. It would be more analytically precise, it seems to me, to say that we did the only thing we could do under the circumstances."

Lardner's time in our nation's history, his membership in the Communist Party, and his work in the movies make this a unique memoir. Those who read his touching recollections will learn about screenwriting in a type of studio system that no longer exists, and about a type of Americanism (and American Communism) that also no longer exists. He writes with grace and amusement about his own mistakes and those of others. The wit that won him Oscars for _Woman of the Year_ in 1942 and _M*A*S*H_ in 1970 is clearly on display, as is a lack of rancor for how his nation and his fellow movie makers treated him. This book is a warm farewell.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Quiet Hero.......2000-12-05

Ring Lardner, Jr. wrote as naturally as others breathe. He was serious about serious issues but uncomplaining, even when he was jailed by American thought police. He is humorous on matters worthy of humor and profound, without being heavy, as he considers age, infirmity and the shortcomings of conventional religion. Like the man himself, this book is nothing short of a gem.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive book on the Hollywood 10.......2000-11-29

This is a very, very good book. Yes, it starts a little slow as he sets the stage from his young life. And the chapters on his involvement with communism do not fully explain what his attraction to communism was. But I think after much research and book reading, this book allowed me to get as close as I could to the answer. And the answer is, in the current political environment of my life, you can never fully understand the travesty of the depression and the Spanish issues in the 30s and therefore, we can never totally feel why free Americans would feel so strongly about communism. So, I've finally closed my research on this subject thanks to Ring Lardner, Jr.

This book has some great highlights which should be cherished by the readers. Dalton Trumbo may be the most celebrated of the Hollywood 10 and his humorous attempts to write and get credit for writing are quite interesting during the Blacklist period. The book correctly conveys the lives which were altered or damaged by this horrible period in America freedom.

Another interesting subject is the few movies that are mentioned showing how the screenwriting process changed the movie completely from the original story. For example, I had read the great sports novel, "Semi-tough", by Dan Jenkins. Lardner wrote a screenplay and a new director had it completely rewrote focusing not on football but on mystical self-improvement gurus. I had always wondered how a movie could so butcher a very funny book so it was nice to get closure on a 30 year old question.

Lardner wrote and won an Academy Award for "Mash". This provides more interesting reading on a movie which is still significant in the landscape of American cinema.

The next to last chapter provides a look not at history but directly into the soul of this interesting man. What starts out as a description of growing old turns into an exceptional essay on his beliefs or nonbeliefs in religeon. Regardless of your feelings, this is fascinating chapter that may challenge your own beliefs.

In closing, I believe you will enjoy this read of a man who led a full life suffering through the Hollywood 10 tragedy and early deaths of brothers in Spain and WWII. I recommend this book specifically to readers interested in Hollywood, American history in the 20th century, or biographies of famous writers.
