Book Description
From the era of Pan Am clippers, bias cut gowns, and free Cuba comes the nightclubswank, sophisticated, and, sadly, no more. In their heyday, few destinations were as alluring as the Stork Club, El Morocco, the French Casino, Cotton Club, Latin Quarter, Cocoanut Grove and other clubs that lit up the velvety evening hours. Where else could one dine while Frank Sinatra sang, or sip a martini while Jimmy Durante and a troupe of Carmen Miranda-clad chorus girls danced across the stage?
For the first time ever, Nightclub Nights opens the door to that glamorous, colorful, and vanished world. Using gorgeous, riotously colored authentic programs, menus, and period photography, author Susan Waggoner brings the nightclub back to sizzling lifefrom celebrity sanctuaries like Sherman Billingsley's Stork Club, where the rope line was invented, to the Latin beat of the Tropicana and the Chinese flair of Khubla Khan's. Impeccably designed and printed on heavy stock that replicates the original quality of the authentic artwork, this volume is filled with period history and anecdotes about the clubs as well as the stars and other noteworthies who frequented and performed at them. Today, with the resurgence of the cocktail hour, ballroom dancing, and supper clubs, Nightclub Nights is sure to appeal to audiences young and old as well as to those interested in popular culture and graphic design.
Rich with color, style, and atmosphere, Nightclub Nights is the next best thing to a table for two at the Copa.

Handsome Book, Good Source For Appreciators Of Cocktail..........2003-04-11
A handsomely bound book with lots of colour and a real feeling of nostalgia throughout. I thought the book was well set up for easy reading and the enclosed anecdotes were usually charming and interesting. Some very sharp looking sepia-toned photos throughout the book along with colorful graphics and photos. Nice reproduced images of the various clubs' promotional material as well. I would have myself liked to see more photos of the people who worked in these establishments in "action" so to speak. Meaning, photos of flashy bartenders mixing up a martini, or beautiful cigarette girls, or a waiter with a tray full of fancy drinks, etc. I would have also liked to know what ever happened to the clubs themselves after they closed. Were they bulldozed? Do some still exist albeit in another form? However, the book is one of the few tributes in printed form to the period of the luxurious dinner clubs and night clubs of the first half of the 20th century. That alone makes it a must have for enthusiasts of the long gone cocktail "set". I was in the club industry for most of my working years, so I do know a little of the lifestlye! Wish I could have been around the "French Casino" or the "Cocoanut Grove" back in the heyday. It looked like a marvelous time to be alive in America and enjoy the true meaning of "a night on the town".

Book Description
Prepare to be shocked.
From the man The Wall Street Journal hailed as a "Swiftean satirist" comes the most shocking book ever written!
The Borowitz Report: The Big Book of Shockers, by award-winning fake journalist Andy Borowitz, contains page after page of "news stories" too hot, too controversial, too -- yes, shocking -- for the mainstream press to handle. Sample the groundbreaking reporting from the news organization whose motto is "Give us thirty minutes -- we'll waste it."
Customer Reviews:
Bipartisan humor.......2007-01-09
Great book. Andy is really good making you laugh insteead of cry with his take on politics. Mostly for Democrats, but Republicans (like me) can get a kick out of it too
Hilariously Funny.......2007-01-05
Great reading for fans of the Borowitz Report. I read in the doctors office - by the time they got to me, I had been laughing so hard my blood pressure was down to 99 over 61 - proving laughter is good medicine!
LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!!! The BEST at this art!!.......2004-12-02
One of my favorite kinds of satire is the fake newspaper story -- one that uses the structure of REAL stories as a device to spark real roars of laughter due to the often brutal jokes that take on a special meaning in a once-serious context. I've actually dabbled in these myself, in my early years as a journalist, on my website's previous (now defunct) satire section and now on my existing wenblog.
NO ONE does this form of satire better than Andy Borowitz. PERIOD. I never met him. I never exchanged an email with him. But I'm going to buy all of his books (used if I can, to save a bit of $). Before I had my blog I'd email his stuff with a link; now I occasionally link them.
The Big Book of Shockers is Borowitz at his best (with perhaps one overdone device; see below). You wreck the book if you go into detail, but I can share you a few of my favorite pieces: Ann Coulter's spontaneous combustion; Bill Bennett losing his wife in a poker game...and so many more. Best headline (with a great accompanying satire): CHENEY'S BRIEF APPEARANCE, RETURN TO SECURE LOCATION MAY MEAN SIX MORE WEEKS OF WINTER and BUSH REBUFFED BY MODEL UN.
This book is a GREAT Christmas gift. Why? Borowitz, like the super topical satire group The Capital Steps, isn't doing one-sided partisan satire. He lampoons EVERYONE. And his professional comedy writing experience shines through in each gem of a satire because he's the very best of his genre: each satire has a beginning, middle and an end, and there are no wasted words. Just laughs. You can gift this book to anyone who follows the news or politics -- it doesn't matter if its a Bush supporter or a Kerry supporter (or a Nader supporter).
The only device that doesn't quite work is a running gag -- a perhaps due to the fact that I have a blog and read so many outrageous blogs that it didn't seem all that outrageous to me. You may react differently. This "blog" is also the only one that breaks the format of this book's pieces -- satires of news stories.
Prediction: if you read this, you'll order more of his books. And that's no joke.
Hilarious!.......2004-10-19
I laughed at every page of Andy Borowitz's book. He is truly a comic genius! It's a refreshing light-hearted look at the sad state of politics in the world today. After reading the funny satirical articles, I could go to sleep with a smile on my face instead of a furrow in my brow. The articles in the book read like newspaper articles with hysterical twists and turns - you'll laugh out loud and want to share the book with friends and family.
If you loved Team America..........2004-10-17
If you have seen Team America and loved it (I did) but wondered, where can I get more of evil Korean dictator Kim Jong Il, look no further: this is the book for you. Kim's evil face is smiling right there on the cover, and for a good reason: he "wrote" the introduction and an "exclusive" blog for this extremely funny book. The South Park guys have nothing on Andy Borowitz, who turns out to be an evil genius in his own right. I have never laughed so hard as I did at Kim's list of favorite records he would bring with him to as desert island if the world is destroyed (by him).
Above and beyond the Kim stuff, which is worth the price of this book alone are truly hilarious news stories about everything from Bush, Kerry, Saddam and David Blaine... this is a really highly recommended purchase.
Book Description
A British prime minister in Queen Victoria's England once dismissed Kilimanjaro as that mountain behind Zanzibar with the unrememberable name. Today, there can be few who don't recognize its most beautiful and evocative name. From the literature of Ernest Hemingway, from movies, and from a multitude of images, the world is familiar with the Elysian view of elephants and giraffes grazing against the shimmering backdrop of Kilimanjaro. Floating over the plains of East Africa, more mirage than mountain, Kilimanjaro exudes mystery and romance. At the same time, it is an accessible mountain, drawing more than 20,000 visitors each year to its slopes and snowy dome. The climb up Kilimanjaro has been likened to a journey from the equator to the poles, passing as it does through zone after zone of climatic change, from tropical forest to frozen desert. And Kilimanjaro's human history is no less rich than its natural history. Close to the cradle of mankind, the mountain has watched history unfold at its foot, from the earliest hunter-gatherers and the scramble of colonization to World War I battles and the wave of independence that swept Africa in the mid-20th century.
In Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa, accomplished mountaineer and writer Audrey Salkeld presents a comprehensive and awe-inspiring portrait of this noble mountain and its myriad facets. To be published in conjunction with the release of David Breashears's stunning new IMAX® film about Kilimanjaro, this book is an extraordinary journey to the roof of Africa.
Customer Reviews:
This book has something for everyone.......2007-07-07
Entertaining and informative book. The authors command over the language is impressive. I am visiting Kilimanjaro soon and I found the book gives a good insight into what the trip will be like. The book is full of historic information, both natural and human. Vivid photos, as expected of a National Geographic book, though I would prefer less glossy and minute details - if too much of a natural attraction is revealed in advance, the real experience is usually a let-down. I am itching to see the corresponding I-Max movie now, though after my trip.
Kilimanjaro - Mountain at the Crossroads.......2005-08-23
Absolutely beautiful book. Gave as a gift to a niece who had just returned from climbing Kilimanjaro; she rated it excellent.
Great Memory Book!.......2005-02-09
I just returned from "climbing" Mt Kilimajaro. I use quotes because one reviewer seems to think it's not. This was one of the hardest things I've done. I saw this book on my guide's desk and began reading it. I was totally empressed by the history and photos. The memories of what I had just done came flooding back. There was an aerial photo of the crater that took my breath away. I have the movie and now I have the book. The book is kept right next to my certificate from the park and the picture album of my climb. I recommend this wonderful book (and the IMAX movie) to anyone who had climbed the mountain, plans on climbing, or just enjoys the beauty that is Mt Kilimanjaro.
Nice Photos (Some Stolen!) And Lousy Writing.......2003-07-30
The Mountain Club of Kenya recently (and regrettably) acquired a copy of this book. Using the Club library, I read it and was shocked to see that some of the Club's photographs had been used to illustrate it (e.g. picture of Arthur Firmin); apparently without the Club's permission. National Geographic and Audrey Salkeld should be sued for copyright infringement.
Kilimanjaro is a much over-rated mountain. Serious mountaineers don't go anywhere near it unless they are herding the countless tourists up and down. It is filthy pig-sty and clients are forced to pay ridiculously high charges for the privilege of "climbing" (actually walking up) it.
Salkeld completely ignores this fact, as she ignores the fact that all the local guides on the mountain know absolutely nothing about mountaineering and what they do know is downright dangerous! She ignores the fact that 20-odd people a year die on the mountain; completely needlessly as they rush up too fast, trying to save some money on the outrageously high park fees charged daily by the authorities. She ignores the fact that on average, for every tourist (please don't call them "climbers", Salkeld), there are at least two "guides" or porters, collectively three times more people on the mountain than is necessary: rubbishing the environment, chopping down trees for fuel, eroding away at the trails, defecating in the water sources.
In short, Salkeld wrote a typically boring tome that poses as a coffee-table book. And National Geographic, supposedly a serious scientific and geographic society, published something akin to the worst papparazi tabloids.
I won't be buying this book.
Glimpse of the mountain.......2003-02-13
I saw this book right after returning from a trip to Mt Kilimanjaro, and was amazed by the high fidelity of the images in the book. I believe it truly captures the essence of the moutain. The main risk related with this book is that, after reading it, you may find yourself dreaming with this moutain. It also contains an interesting introduction to the mountain's and the surrounding area's history.

Best of Incubus Transcribed Scores.......2003-05-22
Incubus is a refreshing innovator of today's music, and this book is an essential to any guitarist, bassist, or drummer who loves the band. It features full transcriptions with tablature to the following tunes: Drive, 11am, Nice to Know You, Pardon Me, Privilege, Stellar, Warning, and Wish You Were Here. The songs are printed in "score" form, which lays out the different instrument parts nicely but uses many pages to print the entire song.

A great game.......2007-06-17
Royalty is essentially a form of Scrabble but played with cards. I like it because it can be played more casually than Scrabble, but it can also be played in a very competetive manner.
My wife and I play it regularly, for fun, without keeping score.
I am ordering a new deck because my wife gave her's to her sister.
The quality of the cards is good and the package includes a plastic case and instructions.
This game is suitable for ages ten and up. I am 51 and enjoy the game.
Play it for fun, as I do, or for keeps. It is easy enough for fun and complex enough for real competetion. A first rate card game.
Royalty fanatic.......2007-03-05
My wife and I played Royalty for many years. We have tried many other word games especially an all time favorite Scrabble. Royalty provides a very good alternative to Scrabble. Game play Royalty presents complexities and therefore challenges that Scrabble does not have.
In Royalty a player can either play a word from his hand, capture an opponents word by adding cards to form a completely different word, or do both on any one turn. Like Scrabble a player can choose to return cards to the remaining deck. However in Royalty a player must return his entire hand and receive 7 new cards.
Royalty is a an excellent test of vocabulary and mental agility. You will thoroughly enjoy this game.
Exhort word fans to partake!.......2006-02-18
I played this with friends over New Year's, and we nearly missed the fireworks at midnight because we were so engrossed in this game. It's a little slower paced than Scrabble in terms of turn length, but the anagram fun is doubled because you can use not only the cards in your hand on your turn, but rearrange any word on the board as well. One of the more strategic of the word games I've played, Royalty challenged the word-lover in me and introduced a level of competition to create the most elegant word beyond that in most other word games. Very satisfying.

In between these feature comics stories are funny, frightful bits like fake ads featuring the aliens Kang and Kodos, "A Kid's Guide to Monster-Proofing Your Room," "Captain McCallister's Ghost Stories of the Briny Deep," and four Mad Libs-inspired variations of "The Curse of the Thing." Comics fans take note: contributing writers to this collection include stars Mike Allred, Peter Bagge, Paul Dini, Evan Dorkin, Bill Morrison, James Robinson, and Jeff Smith. --Jim Pascoe

Customer Reviews:
A must have for any Simpsons fan.......2003-01-15
For those of you who are fans of the hit television show "The Simpsons", you are probably well acquainted with the legendary "Treehouse of Horror" episodes that have become a Halloween tradition. These episodes have proven to be such a seasonal favorite that Groening and the gang have decided to dish out even more tales of terror in "Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror: Heebie-Jeebie Hullabaloo".
Hullabaloo is a collection of comics and sketches that cleverly capture the humor and style of the Simpsons Halloween specials. Much like the television version, the main stories in Hullabaloo are parodies of famous horror films. The first story in the book is a parody of the classic horror film "The Blob". In the sketch, Simpsons character Sideshow Bob takes an experimental treatment that transforms him into "Sideshow Blob". Seizing the opportunity to take revenge on his nemesis Bart, Sideshow Blob squeezes out of prison and wreaks havoc on Springfield.
After Springfield is saved from "Sideshow Blob", they barely have time to recover before Lisa becomes possessed by the evil spirit of Madonna in "The Exorsister", a combo-parody of the infamous "Exorcist" and the even more infamous Madonna. The book continues with additional parodies of films such as "Little Shop of Horrors", "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers", and "Cat People".
In between the main features of the book are a plethora of comics, guides, and stories hosted by and featuring an assortment of Springfield characters. One of these guides features everyone's favorite slack-jawed yokel, Cletus Del Roy. Cletus presents to us "A Yokels Guide to Halloween" which teaches us how to celebrate Halloween like "Edgar Allan" Poe white trash. Another extra features Bart's "Guide to Low-Budget Costumes" which shows you how to cheaply transform yourself into horrid monsters such as "Vaselino, The Thing That Wouldn't Dry". You'll also find the story of "Elijah Dunn and the One-Armed Nun", Evil Dr. Burn's "Goodtime Servant Factory", "Springfield in Hell", and much, much more.
Hullabaloo is colorful, fun, entertaining, and just in time for Halloween. The comical cast breathes sarcasm and humor into favorite horror classics. If you are a fan of the Simpsons and Halloween, then this book will not disappoint you.
Funny!.......2002-11-02
HEEBIE-JEEBIE HULLABALOO is top-of-the-line Simpsons! The presentation is high-quality with an embossed cover and bright, clear graphics inside. You won't be disappointed!
Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror : Heebie-Jeebie Hullabloo.......2002-03-20
This book was as told it would come and was brand new. There was not one little mark on it. I would order from this user again.
Simpson's Comic Book.......2002-01-06
This comic book was pretty good with another humerous approach to to the Simpsons comic saga. Stories include
1. Sideshow Blob-Sideshow Bob is turned into a giant phlem.
2. The Exorsister-Lisa possessed by the spirit of Madonna.
3. The Immigration of the Body Snatchers-Pod people take over and Homer tries to convince them they are here and not crazy.
4. Call me Homer-Famly history of Homer eating blubber in the tale of Ishmael.
5. Bart People-Bart turns into a cat.
6. Little Shop of Homers-Killer Homer plant.
Pretty good book overall.
Mmmm... Donuts.......2001-10-28
I think this book was really funny. I really liked Homer Simpson's Halloween Carols. He is my favorite cartoon character. I guess the funniest part is, when the Simpsons were watching Kent Brockman talking about a plant that eats donuts, and Homer said "Mmmm... Donuts." That was pretty funny. Another funny scene was when everyone in Springfield found out this was just a comic book, and they didn't really exist. Homer said "If I don't exist, can I still eat donuts?" That one cracked me up. I guess, now, you can see why I like Homer Simpson so much.
Customer Reviews:
It takes guts to write a book like this..........2007-05-31
Can't imagine what the negative reviewers are talking about. This is a brilliant book - as brilliant as all of Dave's. The writing is vivid, fascinating, excrutiating. Bravo to Richard for having the guts to be completely honest about his feelings for Dave at the beginning of the book, and his total honesty about what happened to him when David left. There has to be a special place in Hell for all the "do-gooders" who returned him to the monster called "Mother." Although I hated her, I felt more revulsion for the system (or lack of one) for failing all of the Pelzer children, again and again. And I don't have any sympathy for their father. He was an utter failure - despite Dave's nearly-miraculous ability to love and forgive him, I don't have to. I loathe his total, weak, cowardly abandonment of the boys who needed him. Frankly, I picture him as a kind of worm. Sorry, Dave and Richard, but I think he's the worst one of all - how could he?
great.......2007-05-07
Its a very interesting book.MOst of the students iI work with have read it.
A Brother's Journey: Surviving a Childhood of Abuse.......2007-05-06
I enjoyed this book very much.. Iy makes me sad to think that a mother or father or anyone for that matter could abuse a child in the way that this one did. I am impresed that he got help and was able to go forward with his life.. I would recomend this book to everyone.
Horrible!.......2007-03-06
To think that someone could do these things to a child is horrible. This book made me want to cry. Another book that will grab your heart is This Can't Be Love! by Patricia Goins. You won't be able to put this book down.
Another viewpoint.......2006-10-29
After having read the 3 books by his brother David, it was very interesting to read the story from another child's viewpoint. And a reminder to we adults that events affect many others, whether intended or not. And how much influence we have on a a child's actions when they look upon an authority figure, parent or otherwise, as being an example to follow.
Product Description
Library Books on Tape: 5 Audio Cassettes in a large clamshell case. Dave Pelzer's bestselling memoir, A CHILD CALLED IT, introduced the world to the Pelzer family and the shocking abuse that took place in their home. Dave was fortunately rescued from the Pelzer household by the time he was twelve, but at this point, his brother Richard became the target of their mother's alcohol-fueled rage. Subject to nocturnal beatings, denied clean clothes, and forced to swallow Tabasco sauce, Richard Pelzer suffered daily abuses throughout the remainder of his childhood. Now, for the first time, he shares his story. At once disturbing and uplifting, it is the story of a boy who found the courage to survive years of physical abuse - and how the human spirit can triumph even through the most sever and horrific circumstances.

The Best Hitorical record of the F-111 yet!.......1999-01-21
I have been associated with the F-111 since Jan 1970 both as a crew member and a civilian instructor. I am Also the high time USAF F-111 instructor weapons systems oficer, with 2500 hours. This book covers the aircraft in more detail than any I have yet seen and my collection of F-111 books is extensive. I have books that have been sent to me from people in Japan, United Kingdom, Australia and all over Europe and this exceeds them all. Out of 129 F-111A's I have flown 95 of them and out of 94 F-111E's I have flown 76 of them, so I feel sure of myself when I rate this book 5 plus stars and tell you it brings back many memories. Major Wm H. Hamilton, USAF, Ret.
a well-written and informative book.........1999-01-16
this a great book about the vark..unfortunately like his previous book, Republic's A-10 Thunderbolt II : A Pictorial History, Don Logan included too many picture of F-111 on the ground.Almost 90% pictures depicted F-111 on the ground with a side view. This make the picture looks like a repetiton. It make the vark looks like a statue rather than a predator in the sky. Nevertheless this book is a good reference for the F-111 enthuasist and fan.
Detailed history.......1998-12-21
The bulk of the book consists of photographs and short career histories of practically every example built (90% have a photo). The technical description and operational history section are adequate, but I would have wished for more detail in these areas and less endless repetition of basically the same photograph. The production is excellent.
An excellent reference book for ' vark or pig ' enthusiasts........1998-12-17
Excellent!! - a "Must Have" book. Don Logan, an ex-F-111A WSO and author of six previous military aviation books has released a superb 320 page pictorial history of the F-111 Aardvark containing more than 740 colour photos. An extraordinary amount of research went into the book. From his own vast collection of photos, as well as assistance from LMTAS, the F-111 Historian Steven Hyre, and from many other contributors around the world during the past few years, Don has been able to present short histories and colour photographs of all but a handful of the 562 F-111 aircraft of all models constructed. All USAF, RAAF, USN, NASA and RAF aircraft are detailed, as well as the oddities such as the FB-111B/C, FB-111H.
This book is well worth the retail asking price of $59.95 USD (and is a steal at Amazons' price).

A Good "Vark" Reference for the scale modeler.......2006-03-23
This is a 36 page book in the already established Lock On format. It is divided into several main parts: Airframe, Maintenance, Landing Gear, Cockpit (with instrument panel descriptions for F-111E, F-111F) and Kit Reviews. The book has 95 close-up color photos of excellent quality. It is a good reference for the "Vark" scale modeler. Being one of the few still in print, I recommend it.
Book Description
In this controversial critique of American political culture and its historical roots, Anatol Lieven contends that U.S. foreign policy since 9/11 has been shaped by the special character of our nationalism. Within that nationalism, Lieven analyses two very different traditions. One is the "American thesis," a civic nationalism based on the democratic values of what has been called the "American Creed." These values are held to be universal, and anyone can become an American by adopting them. The other tradition, the "American antithesis" is a populist and often chauvinist nationalism, which tends to see America as a closed national culture and civilization threatened by a hostile and barbarous outside world. With America Right or Wrong, Lieven examines how these two antithetical impulses have played out in U.S. responses to the terrorist attacks of 9/11, and in the nature of U.S. support for Israel. This hard-hitting critique directs a spotlight on the American political soul and on the curious mixture of chauvinism and idealism that has driven the Bush administration.

with the author on National Public Raido in 2004. His topics
were quite informative. The book was wanted to keep this information
close at hand. Very Pleased to have it. Many Thanks, Dana James Young
a book that serves absolutely America's and the world's interests.......2006-03-22
Once every five or ten years a brilliant synthesis of the published literature comes along and mixes it with profound analyses and insights to describe courageously diplomatic and political realities in such manner that its truth becomes a work of aesthetics and self-sustaining persuasion. Lieven's book bids for this accolade.
Starting with an excellent summary of America's nationalistic mood resulting from 9/11, Lieven summarizes the nature and types of nationalisms and then rapidly connects many of the negative aspects of America's nationalism to the ones pulsating through Europe before World War I. While doing so, he never loses balance and does not neglect the commendable civilizing aspects of America's Creed. Balance and proportion are quite well sustained throughout the book. Weaving smoothly back and forth between current events and the positions of pundits and politicians and historical ones, even beyond Europe, he brilliantly connects disparate events into a meaningful whole and then extracts meaning. As only one of many examples, Jacksonian nationalism and its brutal manifestations of the ethnic cleansing of the Creeks, etc. is presumably derived from the religio-ethnically inspired Scot-Irish "extermination" of the Gaelic-Irish. While there are incontestable civilizing elements to America's nationalism, there are also dangerous and destructive ingredients, a sort of Hegelian thesis and antithesis theme which places a strong question mark in America's historical theme of exceptionalism.
Unlike in other post-World War II nations, America's nationalism is permeated by values and religious elements derived mostly from the South and the Southern Baptists, though the fears and panics of the embittered heartland provide additional fuel.
While discussing "Jacobin Internationalism", "Wolfy Wilsonians", Nativism, racism in the South, Irish Catholics, the Christian Right, Fundamentalists, Millenarians, etc. Lieven expertly brings historical facts and figures into contact with current ones to illuminate and paint the grand tapestry of America's contemporary nationalism.
Lieven's book, among other elements, is also a summation of lots of minor observations--even personal ones he made as a student in the small town of Troy, Alabama--and historical details which reflect the grand evolution of America's nationalism. When he says that "an unwillingness or inability among Americans to question the country's sinlessness feeds a culture of public conformism," then he has the support of Mark Twain who said something to the effect that we are blessed with three things in this country, freedom of speech, freedom of conscience and, thirdly, the common sense to practice neither one! Ditto when he daringly points out America's "hypocrisy," which also is corroborated by other scholars, among them James Hillman in his recent book "A Terrible Love of War" in which he characterizes hypocrisy as quintessentially American.
Lieven continues with the impact of the Cold War on America's nationalism and then, having always expanded the theme of Bush's foreign policy and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, examines with commendable perspective the complex and very much unadmitted current aspects of the U.S.'s relationships with the Moslems, the Iraq War and the impact of the pro-Israeli lobby. It is the sort of assessment one rarely finds in the U.S. media. He exposes the alienation the U.S. caused among allies and, in particular, the Arabs and the EU.
Lieven wrote this book with passion and commendable sincerity. Though it comes from a foreigner, its advice would without question serve not only America's interest but also provide a substantial basis for a detached and objective approach to solving the intractable Israeli-Palestinian conflict to the satisfaction of all involved before worse deeds and more burdens materialize.
Excellent short survey of America today.......2006-02-28
This is an excellent short survey of America and it's problems with the world. Author notes a more then passing resemblance between us and Germany prior to WWI (powerful nation looking for an excuse to shoot someone, absence of dialogue about national aims and purpose). This isn't the first time America has gone nutty, and in the past it's corrected itself. Author's fear is what happens if it doesn't, particularly given the likelyhood of another 9/11. History suggests a poor fate for countries unwilling to live with everyone else.
Euro-Projection.......2005-11-30
Without playing too much to the author's obvious biases, I can only say he has wrought a finely detailed purse from a sow's ear. But it still remains a sow's ear.
Lieven is anti-American. But, for what good reason? Really none. He has a cultural/historical grudge and axe to grind as he projects much of his own country's history on its long departed sibling, America. This grudge has, of course, been held because America has done so very well without the English. If anyone has an imperialist attitude, it is Lieven and his countrymen. The English have characterized Americans as rude, coarse savages, as were the Australians -- the latter perhaps the preeminent example of land clearing for the imperial cause, if there ever were one. One need only speak to the English about President George W. Bush, and it becomes clear they believe him to be a stupid cowboy in the most stereotypical way.
While Lievan poses Americans as Jacksonian oppressors clearing the land of savages, it has historically been the British who have colonized and exploited so-called savage lands they could rape for England's gain. This cannot be entirely said for America, except with respect for the American Indian and African slave.
Clearly, the English colonists were in America to exploit the lands and peoples. But for many other settlers the former problem was, arguably, not so much the conquering of distant lands for personal gain as it was one of ineptitude. Many American settlers did not foresee the hostility of indigenous peoples. Faced with the proposition of life and death, settlers felt compelled to defend their property -- even more, to defend the land that stood breach between sustenance and starvation. Slavery cannot be so explained.
Contrary to Lieven's oversimplified thesis, America has been host to the many masses of people's from distant lands. Rather than clear its land of savages, some observors would surely say America has filled its land with such so-called savages. Indeed, the melting pot never was and never will be. In that respect America is more like France in that through its benificence the door has been opened to a host of problems.
The question now is how America will deal with rapidly encroaching Islamists and Islam itself, the breeding ground from which such extremists spring. The same cannot be said for Christianity. While Islam promotes offensive warfare and the capturing of slaves, Christianity promotes peace and the sane acceptance of one's plight, should it be as slave.
France dealt with the Muslims with a light hand and is now a nation filled with fuming Islamic discontents rioting in the streets and burning thousands upon thousands of vehicles, damaging private property and otherwise undermining the rule of law. One might ask, "Are they savages?" Well, not neccessarilly so. But many hold values that are destructive to the very fabric of a nation. We can trace such failures back to, at least, Algeria. Should America allow itself to become another France? We have opened the floodgates. How should we close them?
Nazi apologist.......2005-11-29
While not specifically apologizing for the nazis, what this author is essentially doing, is making the incredible argument that it is somehow wrong to make war on, or even interfere with rogue governments engaged in crimes against humanity or serious overt aggression toward your own country. And the people he is doing this at the behest of are the inheritors and old allies of the nazis (communists/socialists, anarchists and islamofascists). These people worked together with the nazis and engage in the same behavior as the nazis. More importantly, part of their techniques involve a propaganda war that attempts to get people behind these sick behaviors and oppose anyone who, in any way, attempts to prevent such evil as genocide. The terms that come to mind that describe this author include apologist, collaborator....traitor. No matter how you slice it, people like this are on the side of EVIL. It is EVIL to try to manipulate people into opposing the US and the rest of the civilized world when it tries to stop countries like Iraq, Iran, Syria, North Korea. Bad people do things like that BECAUSE THEY WANT THESE COUNTRIES TO BE ALLOWED TO DO BAD THINGS. Bad things like blowing up YOUR cities with nukes. Bad things like overthrowing YOUR governments (like is damn close to happening in France, as I write this). Bad things like starting another world war.
This sort of thing is not new. It happened just before world war I and later, just before world war II. And it is happening now. Both times, the major powers in the world had the opportunity to nip things in the bud. Both times, they were tricked into not doing so. The people in those democracies were tricked into worrying their governments had sinister ulterior motives for doing anything. Tricked into doing nothing, while the world burned. The result of that was millions of people dead and many millions more murdered by the fascist governments that rose to power.
It's happening again. Same pattern of behavior. Ironically, many of the same players (communists/socialists, anarchists and islamofascists). There is a difference, however, the major power in the world today is the US. And we are a hell of alot tougher to fool than our european friends. We simply will not allow this new form of nazism to rise to power...NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SAYS. As anyone who has bothered to become educated on what actually happened in Iraq (as opposed to listening to communist propaganda), OUR behavior is one of extreme restraint, but overwhelming might when it is needed. Far from being "jingoistic " or "militaristic", the US focuses on the MINIMAL amount of force to get the job done, followed by extreme efforts to replace the twisted and evil regime of someone like Hussein with an enlightened democracy that serves its people....that gives THEM the ability to choose their own destiny. In short, we freed them, with minimal causalties and DAMN few civilian deaths. Our intervention in Iraq wiped out the funding for terrorist organizations (and Hussein WAS the PRIMARY funder of Al-Queda and very much behind the attacks on our country) and wiped a great many of these scum off the face the earth before they could harm any more people. More importantly, it freed millions of people from the yoke of tyranny and has given hope to millions more in the rest of the middle east. That is the truth of Iraq and the truth of the US. We are good people who do good things in the world. And we will NOT stand idle in the face of evil....especially if you are stupid enough to bring it to our shores.
People like Lieven are something....else. Something sinister. Think twice before getting behind his lies. Because the person he wants to hurt....is you.

Book Description
This conference is dedicated to supernova remnants in their earliest phase of evolution. Its main goals are to provide an observational overview, particularly in light of recent advances, and then to set the observations in context by highlighting a number of physical processes that are important in young supernova remnants and also by examining a few specific remnant details.
