These Stickers are fantastic. They show shells that are gorgeous, some I'm not even sure are still available. I know all the kids on my list will love them.

Such a joy to listen to this man tell his stories. No matter who you are or where you grew up and now live, his tales are sure to remind you of someone whom youknow.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best of Garrison Keillor.......1999-05-25

"Fall" contains the single funniest Lake Wobegon monolgue yet written: "Bruno the Fishing Dog." It also contains a typically Minnesotan Thanksgiving recap ("Hors duerves at the Tollefson's, can you believe it?"), and a devastating 24-minute epic, "The Royal Family," that has nothing to do with the Windsors.

Owning this collection (and "Gospel Birds") is a must for fans, and a great starting place for newbies.

            Book Description

Distinguished by a simplicity and lucidity that has made it one of Sibelius’ most popular works, the Fifth Symphony, according to Grove's, "is simply in its most characteristic manifestations, unlike any other music." Popular with concert audiences for its rich, deeply stirring score, the work is reprinted here unabridged from the original 1921 full-score edition.

5 out of 5 stars Dover Score of Sibelius 5th Symphony.......2006-12-12

Nice score from Dover. There are some minor corrections made in latest Hansen scores (this is a reprint from first Hansen print), so it is recommended to check them out. More of that I wait for new complete edition, the blue one to come out after copyright issues are over in Europe. The new edition of Sibelius 2nd and Kullervo-Symphony already exists and is highly recommended, although very expensive in big format (the study score of 2nd has just come out as well).

            Book Description

Sibelius's Fifth is one of the great late-Romantic symphonies. In this searching account, based on a wealth of new information, James Hepokoski takes a fresh look at the work and its composer. His findings have implications beyond Sibelius himself into the entire repertory of post-Wagnerian symphonic composition. In addition to providing a descriptive analytical overview, the book also chronicles the work's initial composition and subsequent revisions. It concludes with a discussion of the composer's own prescribed tempos, along with a comparison of several different recordings.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good insight and information.......2002-01-09

This book is very informative. It gives a good insight on Sibelius' attitude to composing, his fears and his view of his standing to his pears. It also gives a good overview on the Symphony and an interesting approach to Sibelius' form. Those interested in Sibelius' metronome markings on the Symphony from 1947 find a good comparison to the most recordings, which is very revealing.
A very helpful book for me to get close to the piece for study and hopefully for a good performance of it next week.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars olol Phil Helmuth = fish.......2007-07-16

Phil's not an elite cash game player -- most people know that. That doesn't mean he's in any way a bad poker player, and he's inarguably one of the best tournament players to play the game. You don't draw a line between the two when judging a player's ability -- cash games and tournaments don't play the same way.

This was an entertaining book because of the ego and the self-aggrandizement. That's what makes Phil so entertaining. I've heard this book described quite aptly as "Phil's gift to himself." And that's not an entirely bad thing.

                2 out of 5 stars utterly forgettable.......2007-04-25

this is strictly a "read-it-at-Borders" book. i give it two because
Phil is halfway amusing with his own curiously appealing egomania and it's sometimes an ok read: like reading USA Today--you read a few interesting things but nothing really sticks once you put the paper down. fast food for the mind.

5 out of 5 stars The braclets .......2006-10-19

There are only three people in this era that have ten wsop braclets and only one with the most cashes and thats phill hellmuth jr. So come corrected and buy every book and buy every dvd the living legand has to offer. This book is good literature and is the only good book by a pro who is sharing actual stories of the highs and lows on the pro circuit.

5 out of 5 stars Quite a fun read, not intended to be a strategy book.......2006-09-06

I bought this book, read it, and enjoyed it very much. I'm not really getting all the negative commentary directed at this book. It's not all about the bad beats Phil has taken: he does mention some circumstances where he got lucky.
I realize Phil acts terrible at the table sometimes, but I find it hard to hold it against him when you consider the good things he does. I have it on good authority that he's one of the few generous tippers at high limit poker (I know dealers who dealt to him when they worked in Vegas). In fact he gives money to almost everyone he comes in contact with, like homeless people and retail clerks. So he wants to act up at the table? So what?
Another important consideration is that his antics make good TV.
If you're a serious poker player, bear with me and try to look at this from the standpoint of a casual player. If you're watching a poker match, would you rather watch Mike Matusow and Phil Hellmuth play, or Harrington and Ferguson? Those last two are my favorite players, but you have to admit it would be boring to watch them sit there and stare at each other for a couple of hours. With Matusow and Hellmuth you get lots of bleeped dialogue and laughter from the audience. This 'bad attitude' that Phil's got has been worth millions to him in endorsements. Maybe I should try it!

4 out of 5 stars Fan of Phill.......2006-07-17

It is very fun to read this book when you are a fan of Phil's. I believe in what he says and I take him for real. The book has many short stories of hands that Phil has witnessed in the past. I recommend this book to those who really apreciate Phil as a player and as a person.

No one person can tell you all the tricks of getting into the Radio and Television business, but advise is necessary. As a college student, I found the book helpful and it led me to do my own in-depth research. This book really got the ball rolling for me. It should not be your career bible, but it is a helpful resource.

                Book Description

Stuey Ungar, the son of a Lower East Side bookie, grew up in a New York of the 1950s and '60s that was straight out of Damon Runyon. By his early teens, he had dropped out of high school and was spending most of his time in the city's under- ground card rooms. So prodigious was his talent for playing gin rummy that he soon found himself bankrolled by members of the Genovese crime family. After thrashing every top gin player on the East Coast, he was forced to broaden his horizons--traveling around the country to find opponents and also learning other card games, including poker.

At twenty-one, he moved to Las Vegas for good and quickly found mentors in poker legends such as Jack "Treetop" Straus, "Amarillo Slim" Preston, Doyle Brunson, and Chip Reese, who embraced the skinny five-foot-five kid with the Rimbaud aura. Soon enough, Ungar was playing in the biggest games at the famous Dunes poker room, learning the finer points of the game at incredible speed.

In 1980, competing in his second tournament ever and playing a game--no-limit Texas Hold'em--he'd just learned, he shocked the poker universe by winning the World Series of Poker. He would go on to win the event a record three times. In One of a Kind, authors Nolan Dalla and Peter Alson tell the startling tale of a man who managed to win millions of dollars and live the highest of high-roller lives without ever quite understanding or respecting the value of money. Whether tossing away his winnings at the racetrack or on a single roll of the dice, Ungar was notorious for gambling every single dollar in his pocket on a daily basis. The risk that he embodied in his gambling carried over to his personal life. He had no concept of night or day. He didn't own a wristwatch, didn't have a bank account, and for years had no home address or personal possessions. For all his gambling successes, at the end of his life he bounced between hotel rooms, casinos, and crack houses, dependent upon the kindness of friends and strangers.

This intimate, authorized biography illuminates the dark genius of poker's most charismatic and mysterious star, who could ruthlessly peer into and read other men's souls but seemed baffled and powerless when confronted with his own.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just A Poker Book: Its For Everyone.......2007-09-30

This cautionary tale would make an excellent gift for your younger relatives. It is an entertaining, mesmerizing read but it also has a clear anti-drug message. The book is definately not just for poker players. It tells how one of the most talented card players of all time yielded to his self-destructive demons. This biography gives an accurate depiction of the poker tournament world and Las Vegas. In the poker forums, like TwoPlusTwo, it is the most popular book in years.

I have met and played poker with the two authors. Both are good poker players as well as excellent writers. Nolan Dalla is the Media Director of the World Series of Poker,a prolific poker writer for many publications, and known for his wit and integrity. His co-author, Peter Alson, has impressive writing credentials in both books and magazines.

This book and Jim McManus' book inspired me to become a full-time poker writer. I'll take a Gambler's Oath that you will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars The title says it all..........2007-09-16

A fascinating look into the life of a character unlike anything else the world had (nor is likely to again) ever seen.

Stu Ungar managed to live a life of extremes. A prodigy when it cames to his profession, but equally self-destructive. If he had only the first element, he may well still be around, winning tournaments. If he only had the second, he would never have made his mark on history and would have been doomed to simply vanish, like so many others.

The fact that he could combine pure genius at the table with a lack of understanding of how the rest of us see the real world is scintillating in itself.

A great read which doesn't require one to be a card lover to enjoy it.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-09-11

This is a great book on maybe the best poker player ever. It takls about his mastery of poker and other games and his addictions in life.

5 out of 5 stars poker and book lover!.......2007-05-12

This book about Stu Ungar is very entertaining and informative. I loved it. The only bad thing about the book is that it had to end. I talked so much about the book a co-worker read it and now he's a big fan of Stu Ungar. He said it was the best book he had every read other than the Bible! To me it's better than the Bible! If you like gambling, poker, gin rummy, or interesting people get this book! I only wish Stu Ungar had written a book on gin rummy before his death. Buy and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A tragic story of epic proportions.......2007-04-19

Real people rarely match the stature of characters from tragic fiction. Their virtues are smaller, and their faults less fatal. Not so Stu Ungar. He was gifted with the greatest ability of any card player of the modern era. He was indisputably the best player of high stakes gin and tournament poker for the later half of his life, and won millions putting those skills to use. At the same time, he was completely incapable of setting limits for himself, and as a result eventually died broke in a cheap hotel, his health destroyed by years of drug use.

Stu's story, told from the outside, would have all the components of a great tragedy. However, One of A Kind goes further, using material from Dalla's incredibly revealing interviews with Ungar (the book was originally going to be an authorized biography, but Dalla's subject died on him) to answer ever-important questions of motivation and to fill in details that would otherwise be lost to history. This level of detail, combined with Alson's very capable writing, makes the book an effortless joy to read.

The only flaw I see in the work is a fundamentally flattering portrayal of a man with a severely skewed moral compass. Stu's criminal involvement with the NY mob, and his neglect of his family, stand out as his most serious shortcomings. Yet the book does not deal with them all that effectively because they are contrary to the positive image that Dalla wants to portray of his subject (and I believe friend?). The glasses may not be rose colored, but they have a slight red tint.

That said, One of a Kind is utterly fascinating and I read it in a single sitting. Anyone interested in poker, gin, gambling, or simply the extremes of the human condition will likely find it well worth their time.

This book is a specific case study. Its dense. Not a fun read. Not particularly interesting. Written in typical college dense format. Nothing really redeeming about the book that a reader can take away with as a general understanding of "everyday forms of peasant resistance" because again, its a case study.

5 out of 5 stars Good work .......2006-07-28

Through an observation of a peasant community in Malaysia, Scott maintains that traditional and classic theories on forms of resistance and protest are actually wrong. In proving this, he also proves that class-consciousness and labor relations are not universal and are not similar to one another. Scott believes however that these forms of resistance are common in all peasant societies and take the same shaping. Scott supports his main argument by stating that although is widely believed that peasants cannot struggle or resist oppression because of their "false conciseness" the peasants do indeed resist but not through what we have learned to accept and know what traditionally has been defined as resistance.

Peasants, Scott argues, have their own forms of resistance which have not until now been looked into. The resistance or protest of peasants in the Malaysian village of Sedaka may not be collective and organized but they certainly exist. Simply because the Sedaka villagers do not protest in what we have come to know as "protest" that does not prove that there is no resistance or opposition to authority, change in labor relations, or social changes. Instead of revolution, the peasants choose what the author calls "the weapons of the poor:" silent non-compliance, gossip, character murder, petty sabotage, small theft and pilferage. The common characteristics in these acts of resistance are almost invisible and non-coordinated. The reasons behind these acts are not straightforward: do the poor steal in order to feed their families or do they do so in order to hurt the rich in the village?

Scott goes further into predicting that the weapons of the poor may not directly create a new order, they are effective in mitigating the process of marginalisation and therefore have made impact overtime in social changes and history.

5 out of 5 stars Useful Whever You Go..........2003-12-03

I read this book in college and loved it because it was informative and readable, a rare combination. I didn't appreciate the value of its insights until many years later, though, when I became a corporate consultant tasked with driving organizational change. When people talk about getting buy-in, empowerment, and other workplace democracy concepts, they are all about avoiding the negative dynamics that top-down command-and-control micro-management so often elicits. Those dynamics are the same ones documented in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible to anyone interested in social change.......2003-10-10

I picked this book up in order to write my Master's thesis on dissidence and collective action in rural China. The last thing I expected to be was entertained, but most of this book is actually very good and fun reading. True, the other part is highly academic, but still accessible and absolutely essential to understanding the dynamics of change in authoritarian societies.

Before Scott published his book, the dominant model for understanding participation in authoritarian societies did not extend far beyond institutional and client-patron models. Scott breaks away from this mode and demonstrates how ordinary, powerless people in repressive societies can still manage to influence policies, through such actions as sabotage, foot-dragging, and gossip. This model makes it much easier to understand, for example, how China reformed its agricultural system (although this book is about a Malaysian village, it is easily applied to most any country one wishes to study).

Essential reading for political scientists and sociologists alike. After reading this book, you will have a whole different view of how change is affected, and a more sophisticated frame of analysis.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Work for Understanding Real Rebellion.......2000-08-12

In understanding Chinese political violence in my Master's thesis I tried to show political power as it actually exists and functions in real life. To do this I used Scott's work, whose focus on orthopraxy over orthodoxy, miniture rebellion and slander began in this work and was continued in "Domination and the Arts of Resistance". Scott is insightful, clear and important: he shows how the elite try to raise the stakes of rebellion past what is acceptable to the subordinate and how the subordinate use the lowest risk, yet highly effective, tools of rebellion at their disposal. Required reading for those trying to understand politics without becoming mired in gross oversimplification.
