Book Description
This magnificent book is the first survey of the figural arts of the Iranian world from prehistoric times to the early twentieth century ever to consider themes, rather than styles. Analyzing primarily painting -- in manuscripts and albums, on walls and on lacquered, painted pen boxes and caskets -- but also the related arts of sculpture, ceramics, and metalwork, the author finds that the underlying themes depicted on them through the ages are remarkably consistent.
Eleanor Sims demonstrates that all these arts display similar concerns: kingship and legitimacy; the righteous exercise of princely power and the defense of national territory; and the performance of rituals and the religious duties called for by the paramount cult of the day. She describes a variety of superb works of art inside and outside these categories, noting not only how they illustrate archetypal themes but also what it is about them that is unique. She also discusses the ways that Iranian art both influenced and was influenced by invaders and neighboring lands.
Boris I. Marshak discusses pre-Islamic and also Central Asian art, in particular the earliest Iranian wall paintings and their pictorial parallels in rock carvings and metalwork, and the richly painted temples and houses of Panjikent. Ernst J. Grube considers religious imagery, and provides an informative bibliography.

wonder.......2007-07-18
this is the most wonderful story of the Persian painting, including references, both pictorial and textual, to pre-Islamic greater Persia.
The images are of great quality, listed in contextual order, from everyday life to mythology and literature.
Printing quality is great and colors are nicely reproduced.
In sum a must for anyone seeking a concise yet scholarly account of the history of Persian miniature. Chapeau bas to Mr Marshak, the author, and company.

Our popular Pretty Good Joke Tape features all of the jokes from A Prairie Home Companion's first four Joke Shows. But that's not enough for fans. Hence, A Few More Pretty Good Jokes, with all the jokes from the April 1, 2000 and April 6, 2002 Joke Shows. A treasury of hilarity, it's full of knee-slapping one-liners ("When it comes right down to it, dyslexics have more nuf"), laugh-out-loud lightbulb jokes ("How many University of Iowa freshman does it take to screw in a light bulb?" "None. That's a sophomore course"), silly third-grade jokes ("Where do otters come from?" "Otter space"), classic chicken-crossing-the-road jokes ("Hemingway said, 'He crossed the road. To die. In the rain'") and outrageous Yo'Mama insults ("Yo' Mama's so fat, she was in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade... wearing ropes"). Plus the usual puns, howlers, relationship jokes, man-walks-into-a-bar jokes, religious jokes, ethnic jokes, political jokes, sports jokes, musician jokes, lawyer jokes ("What is the difference between a woodtick and a lawyer?" "A woodtick falls off you when you die") and more. This live recording features Calvin Trillin, comedian Monteria Ivey, fiddler Phil Cunningham and Prairie Home regulars Sue Scott, Tim Russell and Tom Keith. Garrison Keillor hosts. Like the original, it's audience-tested and certified Pretty Good. Over 1 hour on 1 audiocassette or 1 CD

Ever popular for travel.......2007-05-26
We purchased this set of Kieller's Joke programs because we like jokes and they help while away the time while traveling. No matter how many times we listen to one of these CDs -- just about every trip -- they still keep us in stitches, making the most boring trip a pleasure. While other CDs are cycled in and out of the car, this set remains.
Great Quips.......2003-03-03
Using the style of old-time one liners that just keep you laughing and the interaction of musical introductions, this CD keeps you laughing.
Keillor draws on his usual subjects, Norwegians, "Olly and Lena", jokes that could apply to any ethnic group for some of the time, but the 3rd grader jokes are especially funny and useful for a family "uplifter". Some are groaners, some slapstick style, but all are funny, even if you heard them before.
A good buy!

good company during a road trip.......2002-11-25
This is a compilation of two of Prairie Home Companion's famous joke shows. The single cassette is filled with about an hour of rapid-fire, mostly short jokes. Content varies from fun but silly knock knock jokes and puns, to more adult topics such as doctor, lawyer, light bulb, and relationship jokes. Nothing too bold or dirty, just some old fashioned fun with at least a few memorable one-liners for everyone. A nice mix of rolling eye groans and belly laughs. I often had to rewind to catch the joke that was proceeding during my laughter at the previous one.
Book Description
A career spanning more than sixty years. A life spanning almost a century. Katharine Hepburn reached the height of success as an actress and also suffered through periods that would have ended other actresses' careers. But she persevered with a mix of humor and sarcasm, tenderness and brutal honesty. The world has not been the same since. Collected here are the words that made Katharine Hepburn "Kate" to millions of fans. It does not matter whether the words were originally hers or if they were written for her. Every word spoken in that all-too-familiar staunch New England accent instantly became Kate's.
Her early years of ambition, her later years of reflection have all been captured in this collection. Her views on marriage, career, and life often came across as shocking. But the shock was not in the words she said, but when she said them. Decades ahead of her time, Kate paved the way for the independent woman free to live as she wishes. Above all else, Kate was and always will be the unwavering voice of reason.
Katharine Hepburn once said that there is a difference between being an actor and being a star; she wanted to be a star. The words collected here, said both onstage and offstage, are proof that there is also a difference between being a star and being a legend. Katharine Hepburn is a legend.
Customer Reviews:
Good, Interesting Quotes, A Few Pics--But That's It!.......2003-11-11
This book of Katharine Hepburn quotes, both from her movies and her own sharp wit, is lovingly done and beautifully presented with several black-and-white photographs of the actress, most of which are publicity stills. The main problem with the book: there are no attributions to the quotes, and no info on Hepburn herself. There is a bibiliography, so if you're really meticulous (or a little odd), you can research everything and get the dates of the quotes; otherwise, you're left high and dry as to information about the material.
There is also very little info on the actress herself, just a very short (2-3 pages in an undersized hardcover) snippet of a biography. There is also no speculation on the quotes themselves. While that gives the readers free range for interpretation, again, knowing the dates would have been nice.
The reason I gave it four stars instead of three: one of the pictures in the beginning of the book. It may appear elsewhere, but I don't know. It has Hepburn sitting in a plane with a flight helmet on. If you don't have this picture, buy the book just for it alone--talk about those cheek bones!!! Hepubrn looks even more sculpted than usual!
Bottom Line: Worth the "Used and New" discounted price for the novelty of it, and that one picture. Otherwise, it's a complete coffee table book.

Book Description
In this companion book to "Autumn: An Alphabet Acrostic," the pleasures of spring, from April to Zenith, are captured in twenty-six short poems. New grass and daffodils, hopscotch and kite flying, kittens under the porch and baby birds under the eaves are the subjects of Steven Schnur's evocative verses and Leslie Evans's luminous linoleum-cut illustrations. When read vertically, each poem reveals a playful acrostic, making every handsomely designed page a double treat for the eye as well as a joyous tribute to the season.
Customer Reviews:
book evokes spirit of spring.......2006-03-25
The concept of this book--the acrostic--is clever. But it's the beautiful illustrations and the effortless, hiaku-like writing that make this book so appealing. It's a wonderful picture book that truly evokes the spirit of spring.
Smart acrostic books that introduce topics to little ones.......2005-04-04
These books are entertaining for both adults and kids. We are both wondering what spring item will be represented in the next letter of the alphabet, and how the author will describe that word with the limited parameters. For example, A is:
After days of
Pouring
Rain, the last
Ice and snow finally
Leave the earth.
(See the word April reading down the first lines of the description?)
The illustrations are also very colorful and add a lot to the text.
A must for Spring.......2005-02-26
The ideal book for Spring ! the illustrations make springtime pop out. the color is perfect! every page is a delight.

Extensive coverage is given to the NBC anthologies Kraft Television Theatre and Philco Television Playhouse, and the CBS anthologies Ford Theater and Studio One, as well as to "he competitors"-the 28 new anthologies that appeared in the prime time schedule during 1950 and 1951. Appendices comprehensively list the day-by-day program logs for BBC, CBS and NBC dramas from 1946 through 1951.
Book Description
A Stranger to Myself: The Inhumanity of War, Russia 1941-44 is the haunting memoir of a young German soldier on the Russian front during World War II. Willy Peter Reese was only twenty years old when he found himself marching through Russia with orders to take no prisoners. Three years later he was dead. Bearing witness to--and participating in--the atrocities of war, Reese recorded his reflections in his diary, leaving behind an intelligent, touching, and illuminating perspective on life on the eastern front. He documented the carnage perpetrated by both sides, the destruction which was exacerbated by the young soldiers' hunger, frostbite, exhaustion, and their daily struggle to survive. And he wrestled with his own sins, with the realization that what he and his fellow soldiers had done to civilians and enemies alike was unforgivable, with his growing awareness of the Nazi policies toward Jews, and with his deep disillusionment with himself and his fellow men.
An international sensation, A Stranger to Myself is an unforgettable account of men at war.

To much detail for a simple person........2007-10-11
I really had high hopes for this book because of what a rare find it was and how lucky for everyone it even got published but after just one page of it I was wanting to put it down. It has plenty of good parts with great detail but to much detail, detail that only a poet could understand. The writer was a dreamer and I found it so hard in between his details about the trees and flowers to even keep track with what was going on. If you are looking for a book about the sufferings of the Russian people then this is the book for you to many times his unit fell back on the help of locals and to many times they took advantage of it, many times I felt like I was reading a book about escaped prisoners running through the country side and not a book about the proud German Army that I have gained so much respect from reading other books. The lack of characters in the book will also bother you, you have no other soilders to read about or follow during his hard times, nor is their much listed about his unit and their exploits and any unit pride. This book is a true product of drafted men fighting in a war they never should have.
Fine...If You Like Poetry.......2007-09-20
I was excited to read what sounded like a fascinating memoir from a relatively rare point of view: a German solidier on the Eastern front. What I ended up with was a rambling, at times barely coherent attempt at writing memorable quotes. By the time I was 2/3 of the way through the book, I found myself pleading, "Just tell me what happened! Quit trying to sound so poetic!"
Toward the end of the book, Reese finally starts describing what he was going through in a less-flowery manner. Then it became pretty interesting. It just took a LONG time to get there.
Reese's story is a tragic one, but there are more informative war memoirs out there if you want actual information.
This book proves war is hell........2007-06-06
Willy Peter Reese. I had never heard of him before the first part of June 2007. I met Reese, in his memoirs. He bared his soul for me. I sat next to him as he endured the frigid cold of a Russian winter. He told me of his pain when wounded. I watched as he and his fellow soldiers wore lice infested uniforms, suffered from pyoderma and lymph inflammations.
I watched a young man, quiet and reserved, go to war. In degrees I witnessed this young man give up on life and accept the horrors of war.
Reese, through his writing style, has left behind a compelling piece of literature; painting the war on the eastern front in such vivid colors so as to burn a hole to the readers soul.
Please read, A Stranger To Myself. For those who glorify war this may give you a realistic perspective of what can, and usually does, happen when soldiers face each other. As an Army veteran I am not so naive as to think war can be avoided every time, but when one reads what war is really all about then it is worth the time to try diplomacy first.
Read this book. It will take your breath away.
Richard Neal Huffman
The Bear And IDreams in Blue: "The Real Police"
Tragic but Fascinating.......2007-04-08
This book, which is basically the memoirs of a young German soldier fighting in Russia during WWII, was tragic but fascinating. The language that young Willy Reese is beautiful and gripping. The young man who wrote this, in other words, was a prolific writer. He used captivating language and an unbridled vocabulary. His metaphors and allusions where breath taking and you never got bored from the raw detail that he used to describe the horrors of war. And with this book you also gain an unparalleled account of the horror and wickedness of fighting in the Eastern Front. I would recommend this book if you like WWII history or if you like to read a pseudo-prose poem and memoir with outstanding and fantastic language.
Terror, boredom, revulsion, obedience...life as cannon fodder........2007-02-14
A remarkable book which left a deep impression on me. At once literary in style and harrowing in its descriptions of life as cannon fodder, albeit thinking, passionate, feeling cannon fodder.
Willy Peter Reese was no hero. I am not even sure he was brave. However, as a good German boy he did his duty to the fatherland. First he trained to put on the "mask" of the soldier. Then he went of to war in Russia, mask in place.
He passed through a land where atrocities were the reality. He pillaged food from the starving. During the German Army's massive, fighting retreat Reese's unit was always among the last to get the order to fall back. His young eyes took in the full terror of the Nazi's scorched earth terror tactics. And he was part of it.
Along with his comrades, he routinely drank himself into some other world. When there was no other way to move it, he and his fellow soldiers relentlessly dragged the unit's artillery piece. Day after day. Month after month. Year after year.
All the while, his young mind processed what he witnessed. Temperatures so cold he could only cry. A body infested with parasites. Legs and feet with open oozing wounds. Taking shelter in hand dug hovels. Corpses hanging from trees, lying in ditches, everywhere. In between the bouts of horror and killing, however, were sights of beauty and moments of mental and spiritual clarity. His writing only stopped when his life ended.
Yes, Reese was trying to write like a writer. His loves were Rilke and others of that ilk. His book though, must be taken as a whole. To dissect it, to say this part is too wordy or that part is too introspective, is to miss the point. No, Willy Peter Reese was not a hero. He did his duty as he saw it. He tried to stay alive. He was not brave. Surely, then, he was the typical German male of the day who was thrust into a situation over which he had no control. He did not rage against his lot nor did he relish it. He simply existed through it as best he could.

50 Mission Crush.......2005-09-18
As an avid seeker of WWII info, especially regarding the USAAF heavy bomber air bases in southern Italy, this book puts you there. Written by a B-24 crewmember who lived to tell about the experience of surviving in a time when 70 percent did not, it is an excellent account of the day to day life in one of America's most trying times.
Insight into my fathers service in wwII.......2001-04-07
My father was a top terret gunner in the B-24 in the 15th airforce 449 bomber group stationed in Grottalie, Italy. He spoke very little about the war. This book gave an insight into what my father life was like durning his 55 missions. It was a great book for my family.
Excellent tale of of one man's experience in WW II........1999-08-01
I found the book to be very clear from start to finish. The description from his very first days of training to his last day of battle was very descriptive and could fullfill the reader to a true sence of what the author experienced. Although not shockingly descriptive to the true sence of what men in his position experienced, the book still makes good reading for those who wish to know of life as a member of a bomber crew.

If the Kennedys are America's royal family, then John F. Kennedy was the nation's crown prince. Magnetic, handsome, and charismatic, his perfectly coifed image overshadowed the successes and failures of his presidency, and his assassination cemented his near-mythological status in American culture and politics. Struck down in his prime, he represented the best and the brightest of America's future, and when he died, part of the nation's promise and innocence went with him. That, at least, is the public version of the story.
The private version, according to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour M. Hersh, is quite different. His meticulous investigation of Kennedy has revealed a wealth of indiscretions and malfeasance, ranging from frequent liaisons with prostitutes and mistresses to the attempted assassination of Fidel Castro to involvement in organized crime. Though scandals in the White House are nothing new, Hersh maintains that Kennedy's activities went beyond minor abuses of power and personal indulgences: they threatened the security of the nation--particularly in the realm of foreign policy--and the integrity of the office. Hersh believes it was only a matter of time before Kennedy's dealings were exposed, and only his popularity and charm, compounded by his premature death, spared such an investigation for so long. Exposure was further stalled by Bobby Kennedy's involvement in nefarious dealings, enabling him to bury any investigation of his brother and--by extension--himself.
Based on interviews with former Kennedy administration officials, former Secret Service agents, and hundreds of Kennedy's personal friends and associates, The Dark Side of Camelot rewrites the history of John F. Kennedy and his presidency.

JFK: Real Person. .......2007-09-11
Legend and hero are the words most of us learn in school to apply to John F. Kennedy. We usually tend to see him only in his media and photographic image, but Seymour Hersh portrays him here as being a man with an abundant set of flaws and characteristics. Most likely, although I grant that not everything the author says can be definitively proven, Hersh's depiction of JFK is far closer to that of the real person than the one we see gazing down upon us in posters. Of course, The Dark Side of Camelot is about a whole lot more than the 35th President. We find out all manner of fact and rumor concerning his grandfather, Honey Fitz, his father, and the rest of his family; not to mention Richard Nixon and an array of women who are too numerous to name here. Kennedy was the quintessential high status male, and, intrinsic to his status, were a great many politically incorrect features that are fun to read about (while still being informative in regards to the leader and his times).
BOUGHT AND PAYED.......2007-08-05
If there is one election that was bougth,it was this one.
Nixon would have won in a ,,regular,, election!!
Clinton wasn't so bad after all...........2007-07-21
This is an important book because once and for all, it shows that JFK was a lousy human being and a lousy president. The ONLY reason he's so well regarded today is because he was charming, handsome, charismatic and had great press- in other words, he would have made a perfect Hollywood celebrity...
It's time for the myth to die- as far as I'm concerned, the JFK eternal flame in DC (and other useless memorial nonsense) should be put out- a waste of tax payer money...
Historical Journalism at its Best.......2007-05-06
Kennedy fans, beware. All of the trite, happy fictions and mythologies about your beloved President are forever popped by Seymour's tome. He has done extensive homework in defeating the Kennedy propanganda machine's skilled agenda of disinformation and lies. (Just for the record, I am a leftist with no sympathy for anything Republican or conservative. That does not, however, allow me to ignore the unpleasant facts about Democrats.) JFK's immoral, illegal and reckless behavior is that of a spoiled, indulgent child with an inferiority and manhood complex and a domineering father. That aspect of his presidency is clear. Less obvious is how he got away with it for so long. That bespeaks of an as-yet-undescribed conspiracy of silence, dissembling and coverup that is as troubling as the mysteries of the assassination. Curiously, Hersch tersely states at the end of his book that he found no compelling evidence of any conspiracy in the 11-22-63 murder. However, his book is intended to dismiss myths about JFK's life, rather than death, and in this he admirably succeeds. Hersch's masterpiece does a wonderful job describing how the sex-obsessed Kennedy was constantly being threatened to have his numerous liaisons exposed, some, like that of Marilyn Monroe, that may or may not have ended in suicides. Even his alleged triumphs, such as the Missile Crisis, are shown to have been public relation manipulations as much as any competent Cold War victory. Sadly, the unbiaised reader must conclude that JFK was as immoral, venal and corrupt a President as we have ever had in the White House, and that probably includes the present idiot who has been bought and sold by every special interest in the world.
Read about Kennedy's accepting bribes from defense contractors, how he was married before he met Jaqueline but never got a divorce, how he plotted to get rid of South Vietnam's Diem because Diem wanted to make peace with the North, how his operatives were planning Castro's death the very day he himself was murdered, how he slept with an East German whore and hundreds more less-suspect women, how he sought Mafia help in winning the crooked 1960 election, how he looked the other way at corruption within his own group of cronies, how he planned to bomb the Chinese nuke facilities, and how all the evidence points to a more massive US involvement in Vietnam had he prevailed in '64. In short, just about everything you know in the public forum about JFK is a lie.
Good and informative book with one weakness .......2007-02-23
A very good read , very honest and compelling . I can only recommend the book to all the people who wants to know the whole story . I'm fascinated by the Kennedy family , and I was glad to got the book .
However , I have to subtract one star , because the author perpetrated the myth and the fairy tale of the lonegunman .
With all what we know today , this is an offense for the intelligent mind . Otherwise the book is absolutely great .
Product Description
From the Publisher Investigative journalist Seymour M. Hersh shows us a John F. Kennedy we have never seen before, a man insulated from the normal consequences of behavior long before he entered the White House. His father, Joe, set the pattern with an arrogance and cunning that have never been fully appreciated: Kennedys could do exactly what they wanted, and could evade any charge brought against them. Kennedys wrote their own moral code. And Kennedys trusted only Kennedys. Jack appointed his brother Bobby keeper of the secretsthe family debt to organized crime, the real state of Jack's health, the sources of his election victories, the plots to murder foreign leaders, and the president's intentions in Vietnam. The brothers prided themselves on another trait inherited from their fathera voracious appetite for womenand indulged it with a daily abandon deeply disturbing to the Secret Service agents who witnessed it. These men speak for the first time about their amazement at what they saw and the powerlessness they felt to protect the leader of their country.

The Kennedys and their secrets........2007-03-11
This book is very well researched.Mr.Hersh used the Freedom of Information Act and a lot of sources.
Some of the info that was new to me was the serious, juvenile health problems that Jack Kennedy had.I hadn't read about his personal physician or the trouble that his Dr. had in the future.
Mr.Hersh detailed Joe Kennedy's business ventures and lack of ethics.Especially his boot-legging.
Startling events at the Democratic convention explain the strange choice of Lyndon Johnson as VP.
There are a lot of assassination "players" mentioned in this book.
He covered the corruption in the 1960 Presidential election.
The chapter on Judith Exner and the suitcases highlighted John Kennedy's connection to Sam Giancana.
JFK,like his father was a risk-taker and his womanising was a case in point. After reading this book, one has to wonder if his re-election would have been a success. The scandals likely would have been his downfall.
If you want to read about the political intrigue of the Kennedy presidency this is the book to read!
Dirt in detail.......2005-05-30
Book seems very well researched, but can be a bit of a slog in places. Should have had a chapter on the martyr/myth process that evolved after Kennedy's assassination. What a mess.
