Book Description
Poetry of the Revolution tells the story of political and artistic upheavals through the manifestos of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Ranging from the Communist Manifesto to the manifestos of the 1960s and beyond, it highlights the varied alliances and rivalries between socialism and repeated waves of avant-garde art. Martin Puchner argues that the manifesto--what Marx called the "poetry" of the revolution--was the genre through which modern culture articulated its revolutionary ambitions and desires. When it intruded into the sphere of art, the manifesto created an art in its own image: shrill and aggressive, political and polemical. The result was "manifesto art"--combinations of manifesto and art that fundamentally transformed the artistic landscape of the twentieth century.
Central to modern politics and art, the manifesto also measures the geography of modernity. The translations, editions, and adaptations of such texts as the Communist Manifesto and the Futurist Manifesto registered and advanced the spread of revolutionary modernity and of avant-garde movements across Europe and to the Americas. The rapid diffusion of these manifestos was made "possible by networks--such as the successive socialist internationals and international avant-garde movements--that connected Santiago and Zurich, Moscow and New York, London and Mexico City. Poetry of the Revolution thus provides the point of departure for a truly global analysis of modernism and modernity.

Good reading but not so practical.......2007-03-31
The book I would say is more for laughs than revenge. A lot of these practical jokes are not so practical and even if they were you would probably get jail time if caught.
If you are willing to take some risks to get revenge then this book probably is for you. Keep this one in the bathroom and anyone on the potty should get a kick out of it.
The Big Book Of Revenge: 200 Dirty Tricks for Those Who Are Serious About Getting Even.......2007-02-08
Great Book...!!!
Nice !.......2007-01-11
If you really get in their and dig, you can find some really clever stuff..
Impractical to say the least........2004-01-26
I was disappointed to find that most of these tactics were either impractical or outdated or both. Some examples described in the book:A man who puts on a gasmask, knocks on a door in the middle of the night with a large toolbox in his hand while wearing a gas company uniform and yelling out warnings that the whole block is getting ready to explode. After the home's occupants dissipate he goes through the house placing cement mix in their toilets and scattering rotten meat throughout the house. Huh? In a day and age where you could spend a few years in the slammer if you mailed somebody an envelope full of baby powder? One example suggests that you should buy a chemical made by "Aquatect" which leaves a bright red cloud around anyone who pees in your pool. One small problem- no such chemical has ever existed in the history of the Earth. This has been outed as an urban legend over and over again, even on TV. (A chemical that in concentrations of less than 1:5000 would cause a bright red cloud when it comes into contact with small amounts of urea, despite the fact that it is in a gigantic vat of bleach water? Ummhmm.)On the good side however, you will find that the book is a very quick read and may offer some laughs, as well as possibly a handful of ideas on elaborate pranks. The guy actually has a decent writing style, he reminds me a little bit of Hunter S. Thompson. But the long and short of it is that there is no "Oh, now I've got 'em!" within the pages of this book. (Unless perhaps you are irked at a UPS driver who runs over dead dogs, and you wish to wire explosives in the carcass of a dead dog to blow out his tire as in one example.)
A most competent sabotage manual.......2002-10-19
Some of the physical sabotage techniques in this book would do justice to a CIA or OSS black ops manual. The author has an impressive knowlege of practical mechanics and chemistry- at least enough to do profound damage to vehicles, machinery, structures and lawns. He is also the competent little amateur pharmicist with his poisoning tips (nothing fatal- just very, very unpleasant.) In addition, he is quite the practical psychiatrist with his effective knowlege of what it takes to destroy another's peace of mind, or even sanity. As for character and reputation assassination, well, he is a pure artist....
I'm not going to make a value judgement on the contents of this book. In an unjust world there are justifications for actions like these. Just be careful, there is a fundamental law to the universe that stuff like this comes back to you three fold if it isn't justified....
If you are primarily in to computer mischief, then try his _Byte Me_.

just a good canadian play!.......2003-07-31
Waiting for the Parade is an excellent peice of Canadian literature. From an actor's point of view, the characters are believable and it is easy to grow to care for them as the play progresses. It is also an amazing resource for any female looking for good monologues!
Original & absorbing.......2000-07-04
Set in Calgary during World War II, these 24 scenes follow the experiences of 5 Canadian women who form an uneasy alliance born of loneliness and tumult during an edgy wait for the parade that will herald the end.
There's Catherine, abandoned by her impulsively enlisted husband, Janet, a wartime dynamo conpensating for a secret shame, and Eve, a pacifist school-teacher hard hit by the concept of unquestioning patriotism.
Fatalist Margaret, their senior by 20 years, has one enlisted son and one arrested for protesting. Marta, a German-born Canadian citizen, becomes a target of harassment and suspicion in her own community while her senile, Nazi-sympathizing father idles in prison growing steadily crazier.
This bittersweet drama well exemplifies the isolation & loss of those left behind, against scenes of air raid drills, Red Cross activities, dark merriment & leg-painting parties.
I don't recommend this play merely for reading, as the emotional gravity and singing-rehearsal scenes would not be adequately captured, but it's worthwhile and interesting hour-&-a-half when protrayed by a talented cast.
(There are also a number of affecting monologues--most notably Marta's--suitable for actresses who want something slightly obscure to audition with.)

Power-Up: How Japanese Video Games Gave the World an Extra Life, by Chris Kohler, is a unique book that gives readers an entertaining and authoritative look at the indelible influence the video gaming, particularly, Japanese gaming, has had on the world.
Power-Up is the first English-language work of its kind to examine the reasons behind the success of Japanese video games, rather than focusing on the history of video games. Just some of the features readers will find in this book include:
Profiles of some of the most fascinating Japanese video game designers in the industry, along with a critical look at Japanese video games from their earliest beginnings to new, exciting trends that ride the bleeding edge of popular culture.
Explanations on why Japanese video games are unique and why they resonate so well with young American players.
Fresh insight into classic Japanese video games and the elements that made them so different from American games, the origin of Nintendo, Japan's oldest and largest video game producer, Japanese Role-Playing Games, and much more!
In addition, the future of the Japanese gaming industry is also explored.

Customer Reviews:
Great Read........2007-05-13
This book was an excellent read. Kohler does a terrific job of showing the culture links video games have created between Japan and the Western world. It also shows the stark cultural contrasts. It made me reflect on how much Japanese culture I've been exposed to without knowing it.
Great reading, but touches only the mainstream games.......2007-02-09
This is a good book about japanese videogames and their impact in the western world. The problem, and I agree with the other reviewers, is that the focus deals only with the mainstream and most popular games like Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy. Sure it talks about Dragon Quest(relatively unknown in America until recently) and ICO, but still left many open holes.
But if you forget this flaw, it's really a great and satisfying reading, and the author constructs the text very well. Worth your time. It's a four star book, but I'll give four and half stars (five in Amazon) because it's a good and very little explored theme.
Gaming History in the eye of the beholder..........2006-08-20
History in the eye of the beholder
The boot has very useful information for video game collectors and researchers who are looking for information related to mostly Nintendo oriented lore. I stress its for game collectors and researchers vice enthusiasts. Enthusiasts are looking to be entertained as well as informed and this book does very little entertaining. I found my self reading parts of the book over the course of several months. It just wasn't the page-turner that some other visual treats like "High Score" were. All in all it was worth 13 bucks, however I liken it too a History book on the 20th Century, with key events missing like World War II! Sega is not even mentioned as a footnote! Phantasy Star, Shining Force and several other important events in Gaming History never even captured the interest of the author, and it painfully shows here. Three Stars.
narrow scope, but an interesting read. .......2006-04-12
other people have commented thoroughly about the generalities of this book, and i by-and-large agree. i'd like to add, however, that some of the most interesting parts of this book are the omissions.
for example, they author segues straight from talking about Ninja Gaiden to NOJ/NOA's localization process and standards for content. he mentions that religious iconography, drug use, etc, are all prohibited from being portrayed in Nintendo software, and the list of prohibited content includes cigarette smoking.
the author fails to note the irony, however, that in the aforementioned game there's a bad guy leaning against a light post smoking a cigarette he throws aside before dashing at you. i can only assume it slipped past the censors without them catching it, but my friends and i had noticed it years ago and marvelled that it had been made it through the review process intact.
it's these kinds of things that make me feel like this book is a good general source, but anything deeper than a surface look at the topics covered would require some additional reading/sources.
there are quite a few nuggets of interesting trivia in here - more than enough to make a gamer smile (dragon quest being legally prohibited in Japan from selling on any day except Sunday or a holiday, for example). my copy was a gift; i can attest that it makes a fine one.
Too short and too shallow, but basically worthwhile.......2005-09-14
I enjoyed this book, mostly. Within its scattershot set of chapters about Japanese games in general, there's a fascinating, albeit sketchy, history of Nintendo that contained many small revelations for me, despite that I've been playing video games incessantly since 1987 or so. But the rest of the material was less compelling for me. The chapter about music games and music in games actively frustrated me--it gave only a brief survey of either topic, and seemed to spend most of its words on a tedious, obsessive examination of Final Fantasy albums. A chapter about Akihabara, Japan's premier consumer electronics marketplace, pushed the trivia-to-insight ratio similarly high. In his effort to treat video games as if they deserve the attention of artists, Kohler concentrates too much on material that is only interesting to fans.
Still, on the whole I'm glad I read this book, and I hope Kohler's stated desire to encourage further such works is satisfied; there is clearly much more to say.

Book Description
Zainab Salbi was eleven years old when her father was chosen to be Saddam Hussein's personal pilot and her family's life was grafted onto his. Her mother, the beautiful Alia, taught her daughter the skills she needed to survive. A plastic smile. Saying yes. Burying in boxes in her mind the horrors she glimpsed around her. "Learn to erase your memories," she instructed. "He can read eyes."
In this richly visual memoir, Salbi describes tyranny as she saw it--through the eyes of a privileged child, a rebellious teenager, a violated wife, and ultimately a public figure fighting to overcome the skill that once kept her alive: silence.
Between Two Worlds is a riveting quest for truth that deepens our understanding of the universal themes of power, fear, sexual subjugation, and the question one generation asks the one before it: How could you have let this happen to us? BACKCOVER:

it took a while to get here, but it was in good condition when it did.
Between Two Worlds.......2007-07-13
Zainab Salbi's life seems idyllic, but even as a child she senses the tension felt by her wealthy parents as they entertain and are entertained by Saddam. Salbi's story shows two sides of Saddam: the cruel and abusive despot and the genial manipulator. In spite of the web Saddam spins around her family, Salbi experiences adolescent rebellion, ignorant of the danger her parents see threatening her, just as it threatened her mother and eventually ruins her parents' marriage. Salbi's story is a fascinating portrayal of a family living in luxury under tyranny and the dangers faced whether the choice is to endure or to escape.
CAPTIVATING.......2007-07-02
There was not one moment during this book that I wasn't totally captivated. The author puts a human face on the struggle of those in Iraq who lived under Saddam Hussein. And throughout, you are constantly reminded that she was among the "fortunate" by comparison. I found it to be an excellent education in the history of the country and the evolution of it in recent decades as well. I read this book on a recent camping trip in New England when I should have been mesmerized by my surroundings. Instead, I found I could not put this book down.
Outstanding Memoir, Written With Humility!.......2007-04-17
Wow! This book knocked me out. I could NOT put it down. It really helped me understand some of the conflict within Iraq, but more importantly, the author and tone of this book is just very human, real, and accessible. As a youngster, and for all of her formative years, Saddam Hussein is in the background as a family "friend". Though her parents resisted his friendship, they found it more and more dangerous not to be his friend. It's like living with the devil! However, the author eventually gets out of Iraq and away from Saddam Hussien, due to an arranged marriage. I won't say how that goes as I don't want to ruin the ending.
I do feel that this is one of the absolute BEST memoires I ever read and it was written with a lof of grace and humility. For me, it was an important book, and I highly recommend you read it. I think it will become a classic memoire.
Information you don't get from the media.......2007-04-11
Short and sweet.. This is an awesome book. You see so many sides of Suddam. His dark side certainly made him a candidate for his execution!

Book Description
This book offers a remarkably fresh perspective on the bitterly fought 1916 campaign; it also describes the later battles of the Somme in the Great Wars final year, 1918. Using unpublished evidence from the archives of the Imperial War Museum, it tells its powerful and dramatic story through the letters and diaries of those who were there.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Account of the Somme.......2000-04-16
I recently purchased this author's latest book: `The Imperial War Museum Book of 1918: Year of Victory' and was prompted to do so because I enjoyed his book on the Somme. I first read this book when it was released in hardback some years ago and I am somewhat surprised that it has not received any reviews of yet.
I have a passionate interest in books covering the Western Front during the Great War. I found this book to be a well researched and presented account of this terrible battle. Having read quite a few books on this battle I have no hesitation it placing it along side such great books as Lyn MacDonald's `Somme' and Martin Middlebrook's `The First Day on the Somme'.
Malcolm Brown has utilised numerous first hand accounts from diaries, reports, newspapers and interviews and uses these in a manner that brings life to this terrible battle. Somewhat similar in style to Lyn MacDonald and just as good, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The author tells the battle through the experiences of the ordinary (I should say extraordinary) soldier; British, Australian, Canadian, German and the many others who fought during this terrible carnage.
The narrative flows along smoothly and the personal accounts of the soldiers seem to blend in effortlessly. Malcolm Brown has used the resources of the Imperial War Museum to present a detailed and accurate story of the Somme which I am sure that most people would enjoy and find rewarding. If you can no longer find a copy of Lyn MacDonald's `Somme' or Martin Middlebrook's `The First Day on the Somme' grab this book instead, you won't be disappointed!
Of interest to other readers this book was recently hailed as "a valuable addition to First World War literature".

Book Description
In
A Dangerous Place, Marc Reisner, the author of
Cadillac Desert, the classic history of the American West and its fatal dependence on water, returns to the subject that never ceased to seduce him: California.
Writing with his signature command of his subject and with compelling resonance, Reisner leads us through California’s improbable history and rise from a largely desert land to the most populated state in the nation, fueled by an economic engine more productive than all of Africa. Reisner believes that the achievement of this, the last great desert civilization, hinges on California’s denial of its own inescapable fate. Both the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay areas sit astride two of the most violently seismic zones on the planet. The earthquakes that have already rocked California were, according to Reisner, mere prologues to a future cataclysm that will result in destruction of such magnitude that the only recourse will be to rebuild from the ground up. Reisner concludes
A Dangerous Place with a hypothetical but chillingly realistic description of such a disaster and its horrifying aftereffects.

A Dangerous Place
By: Marc Reisner
A Dangerous Place is an Intense Book. If you thought California got a lot of earthquakes, you have no idea until you read this book. This Book tells you about all of California's earthquakes and the damage they have caused. It also tells you how California was founded and why people settled on this dangerous land. The author does an excellent job explaining the intensity of earthquakes, the damage they have caused and the damage potential that they have. This book also tells you first hand how treacherous earthquakes are. The author gives details of his ordeal with the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It is an excellent book and I highly recommend that you read it.
A dangerous place.......2006-01-02
The book A Dangerous Place is about California and its difficulties. It explains all of the weather related events that go on there. Some of the events are pretty horrible, such as the Great white winter of 1886, and the seismic quietude era, between 1906-1917. That was when the most damaging earthquakes took place. Another earth quake was the Kobe quake; it took place early in the morning thankfully only being a mid-level collapse. There is a scale for earth quakes, and a 7.0-7.7 is a major quake, and an 8.0 is a HUGE quake. Most of the time scientist try to figure out when a storm or quake is coming before it happens, so they can evacuate then before any one gets hurt. Such as John Reber, he handled a huge problem that could have had a huge amount of California in a fresh water lake. He figured out that once one event happened it would only get worse, and cause a whole list of things. 1. A population influx 2. Water crisis 3. Owens River aqueduct 4. Greater population influx 5. Another water crisis 6. Colorado River aqueduct and lastly 7. Which would lead to more people and water problems?
I would recommend this book to readers who like learning about scientists, earthquakes, and history about California. I was interested in it for the first 30 or so pages, but then it got confusing, and it did not catch my interest. For me, it was not fun reading about earth quakes, because it wasn't written like a story, it was just a book of knowledge. To me, even though it didn't interest me, it made me realize how hard it is to live in a place like that and all of the circumstances and dangers it has. I would not want to live in a place like that and it makes me feel sad for all of those who have lost family member in an even that took place there.
Short and Sweet..........2005-10-14
Clearly, the first part of this book was based on research done for "Cadillac Desert" and focuses on the history of growth and water supplies for San Francisco and LA. However, the second and third sections are new: the second section covers the vulnerability of these water supplies to earthquakes (many earthquake faults cross where the water supply lines are built, The third section is a quite realistic scenario of what would happen in the Bay Area in the event of a 7.2 (I think) earthquake. The book is very readable.
It Makes You Think.......2005-09-15
In light of Hurricane Katrina, and if you live in California, a must read. Quick, easy, scary, and thought provoking. It should be required reading for all of those who make decisions in California.
Welcome To My Nightmare!.......2004-12-23
A Dangerous Place by Marc Reisner is a difficult book to review - even though it contains the eloquent prose a reader expects from the author of the classic Cadillac Desert, it also represents an incomplete effort due to the author's untimely death. That said - and 4 stars assigned - let's move on to why this book is worth reading.
Marc Reisner has once again nailed the situation on the head - California, had we known then what we know now, was a really cruddy place to put a heavily populated state. The most populous cities in California either sit next to potentially dangerous faults or over top of them. [When I started teaching 20 years ago, the only known nearby fault to my high school was the Whittier fault - now my earthquake unit is far more exciting given the fact that we now know of two blind thrust faults - the Puente Hills and the Elysian Park - that lie beneath the high school!] Reisner makes the case that many California cities are very expensive ruins waiting to happen. Reisner's main focus in the back 2/3rds of the book is the Bay Area, where three main faults - the San Andreas, the Calaveras, and the Hayward - run directly under areas full of buildings that still have not been brought up to current code and will not withstand the next big quake. Lucy Jones, seismologist, and her colleagues, like to point out "earthquakes don't kill people, buildings do!" Part III of the book is a well-developed fiction of what the next Hayward fault earthquake might cost California and the nation. [I went to Hillside Elementary in Berkeley [no longer a public school] for 1st and 2nd grades, which sits directly on a bench cut in the Berkeley Hills by the Hayward fault.] This section has bothered a lot of readers, but the scenario is accurate and I suspect, had Reisner lived, there would have been a Part IV or an Epilogue to put a more conclusive ending to the book. The book also lacks an index. [I'm unaware of whether this situation was rectified or not in the paperback.]
This book, warts and all, can serve a valuable purpose - start a dialog among Californians and other folks in the United States about what to do about big cities near dangerous faults. We can't move them like we can a small town along the Mississippi River that has been destroyed by a flood or summer homes that have been washed off of a barrier island. And it should be noted that some of us live in California with our eyes very wide open [and this included Reisner himself]. Reisner didn't live long enough to witness the destruction of parts of Manhattan on 9/11/01 or the mashing down of Florida by 4 hurricanes in the summer and fall of 2004. One wonders what the conclusion of the book might have been in light of those disasters.

Book Description
What makes a good mother? Are some women just born naturally maternal, or do mothers discover that part of themselves once they have a child? Now a renowned expert on the subject–and herself a mother of three–addresses the unspoken worries and fears that accompany motherhood and shares the reassuring message that every mother learns “on the job.”
Dr. Valerie Davis Raskin has worked with more than four hundred mothers in twenty years of clinical practice and has discovered that mothering is just as developmental as childhood. Dr. Raskin identifies the nine challenges facing mothers from their child’s infancy to young adulthood, pivotal moments that put mothers to the test time and again–and yet from which they can emerge truly rewarded.
• IDENTITY: How to gain confidence during those overwhelming first months after you’ve given birth or adopted, but don’t yet “feel” like a mother.
• UNLOVING MOMENTS: Every mother’s secret guilt–learn to accept those not-so-precious moments when you don’t like the child you love so dearly.
• HONORING THE FATHER: Tips for helping Dad stop feeling like a third wheel and bond with his child (and receive attention from you!).
• SEPARATION: How to maintain a positive outlook on your child’s milestones, from the first day of preschool to packing him off to sleepaway camp.
• SETTING LIMITS: How to put your foot down, even when your child kicks, screams, or cries.
• IMPERFECT INSTITUTIONS: How to cope when your child does not have the best teacher or the most inspiring coach, or faces a less than fair grading system.
• REVISED DREAMS: Your cute five-year-old in a pink tutu has no rhythm. Your nine-year-old cannot catch a ball. Learn to modify your dreams for your child–and follow your child’s dreams instead.
• ADVERSITY: You can’t keep your child in a plastic bubble, but you can take a deep breath, relax, and be there for her when life gets tough.
• SAYING GOODBYE: Discover the joys of loving your adult child while not living under the same roof.
This wonderfully anecdotal, engaging, and accessible book is nothing less than an essential training manual for mothers of all ages. The bottom line: Just because motherhood is sometimes difficult, confusing, intense, sleepless, and frustrating, doesn’t mean mothers aren’t doing it right!

Great Handbook.......2007-10-03
This is a great book for all mothers, no matter what stage you are at.
I first checked it out from the library and now need to go purchase it so I can have it to refer to over the next 10+ years. I'm also planning on buying a couple for friends. It takes you through each step of parenting and addresses the challenges and provides you with the tools to cope with each one. I highly recommend it.
