5 out of 5 stars Great Work!.......2000-06-05

I love the Phaidon Colour Art Library. I have bought 7-8 of these books, including the Durer, Rembrandt and Klimt treatments, which were all superb books with excellent analysis and ultra-high-quality color reproductions. The Durer and Rembrandt books alone made me spend another $120 on books by these two. This Pop Art treatment was also quite fascinating and opened my eyes and made me go out and spend another $100 on modern art books. It surveys a fascinating, well-chosen selection of the works of dozens of representative pop/modern artists. A thoughtful analysis accompanies each painting/work, and taken collectively these descriptions comprehensively cover a range of themes, ideas, thoughts and paradigms of 20th century post-World War II art. For those who think that 20th century art, pop art or post-World War II art is "flimsy" in character or insightfullness compared to previous eras, this book is well-tailored. One finds that in fact there is a vast quantity of substance to the various art paradigms covered in the works represented here, and that these works do build new foundations and directions for thought. I personally found most of the works fascinating, from Jasper John's "Flag" and "Fool's House," which alone made me travel to the MOMA in search of Johns works and spend $33 on a MOMA book by Johns, to Rauschenberg's Odalisque, to Warhol's Cambell Soup Can, to Jim Din's "Child's Blue Wall," to Oldenburg's hilarious and lurid "Shoestring Potatoes Spilling from a Bag," to the "Wham" comic book "rendition" by Lichtenstein, to works by Wesselmann, Peter Blake, Ruscha, and many others. The book covers many important classics of recent times, and may well be, for such a low price, the best all-around introuction to both pop art and modern art. For [the price], I think it gives a great return in terms of "units of education acquired" per dollar spent.

Created in Darkness by Troubled Americans: The Best of McSweeney's, Humor Category, a collection from the clever young writers that bring us the McSweeney's literary journal and Web site, and co-edited by their leader, Dave Eggers, is funny from the first page. And by "first page," we mean the table contents. Of course not every essay, list, and swatch of dialogue are created equal, but the collection has many tasty morsels that are well worth a read, a read to friends, and then a re-read, after a decent interval has elapsed.

Most appealing in the book's starting lineup is J.M. Tyree's "On the Implausibility of the Death Star's Trash Compactor." Humorous as well as thought-provoking, this essay makes the perfect amuse bouche for what is arguably the collection's main course of hilarity, "Fire: the Next Sharp Stick?", "Candle Party," and "Unused Audio Commentary by Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky, Recorded Summer 2002, for the Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring DVD (Platinum Series Extended Version), Part One," all to be found in the early middle. Though a familiarity with candle parties, Howard Zinn, sharp sticks, and other topics satirized in this book is helpful, it's not necessarily required for understanding the jokes. The biggest risk here is binge-reading, as you may exchange audible laughter for the feeling that you are being force-fed an ice cream sundae. If you pace yourself--say no more than four to six pieces at a time--you should have the energy for the final third, including the funny list marathon at the end. Or save a few portions for later when you are really starving for a good laugh. --Leah Weathersby

      Book Description

Now more than ever, Americans are troubled by questions. As sweaty modernity thrusts itself upon us, the veil of ignorance that cloaked our nation hangs in tatters, tattered tatters. Our “funny bones” are neither fun nor bony. Glum is the new giddy, and the old giddy wasn’t too giddy to begin with.

What can be done to stop this relentless march of drabbery? Not much. Nothing we can think of. It’s pretty much too late. The light of August turns to the overcast skies of autumn, and the taunting sting of winter cannot be far ahead on the highway of the road on the horizon. Who can sing a song without words? Maybe Bobby McFerrin, but is there anyone else? Where do we go when the party is over? Perhaps the afterparty. But what comes after the afterparty?

Questions, there are so many questions, and then some queries, arriving via fax. To these we respond in the only way possible: Talk to the hand, because the face ain’t listening. Nevertheless, we present the pages within as an offering of peace, as a message of hope, and as a perfumed hankie of love—a hankie drizzled with the intoxicating aroma that has only one name: ha-ha-oopsie.

      4 out of 5 stars Great doorknob.......2007-08-06

I bought this book thinking it would make a good bookstop. Doorknob. Showstopper. Whatever.
I was quite disappointed. This book is not suitable for any kind of portmanteau. It makes you think, however. I had at least three, not, four thoughts while, before, instead and after reading it. For that, I will be inmensely grateful.

4 out of 5 stars Hm. My rating stars may be tainted........2006-12-23

I was so extremely bored by the stories, that the time I got to the lists I was almost falling off of my couch laughing. I loved the lists. Loved. But I must be honest and wonder if this was a true literary effort, or a study regarding the effects of different types of comedy on vaguely intelligent human beings.

If the latter is the case, myself and my boyfriend were tearing the book out of each others hand to giggle endlessly over the absurdity of the contents.

5 out of 5 stars Cran-Pepper Hen Loaf, Spiced Saucetail, And Fleen.......2005-12-15

Overall this is an excellent book, with only a few disappointments, which are inevitable in a compendium of this nature. My favorite part of the book is at the end, and consists of humorous lists (my title comes from a list by Steven Tomsik, "Eleven Lunch Meats I Have Invented") of all varieties.

McSweeney's is always a mixed bag, and this volume is no exception. Most of the material is very good, yet there are some articles that are weak or overly lengthy ("Journal of a New COBRA Recruit" and "Unused Audio Commentary by Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky, Recorded Summer 2002, for 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring DVD (Platinum Series Extended Edition), Part One'" come to mind here, respectively). Despite these exceptions, the majority of the pieces are very clever and entertaining. Especially noteworthy are "How Important Moments in my Life Would Have Been Different if I Was Shot Twice in the Stomach", "Fire: The Next Sharp Stick?", and "A Letter From Ezra Pound to Billy Wilder, 1963", to name but a few.

This book isn't for everyone, but people who are inclined to academic humor or clever wordplay will love it. I highly recommend this book. Perhaps you can enjoy it over a brumschlagen sandwich.

4 out of 5 stars GET THE DOOR. IT'S ... THE LUNATIC FRINGE!.......2005-07-31

Now, more than ever, Americans are troubled.

By bladder-contol, erectile dysfunction, evolution and cat litter. By Humvees masquerading as family sedans, and SUVs that brake for cracks in the pavement! (I mean, really! Who are these morons?) By a government that spews out cant about "morality" and "values" and lies like Hitler at a torchlight rally! By Celebrity Bimbos (male, female, and not sure), who have taken it upon themselves to "explain" to us how we should feel about everything from Bush to babies. By childish books about Da Vinci Codes and Sorcerers' Stones that out-sell anything containing an actual original idea! By ...

... Well, you get the idea. Nothing seems quite right any more in the Great Republic; it's all just ... well ... wrong! Despite the fire-and-brimstone blandishments of the `New' Right, despite the timid bleatings of the Other Guys (what's the name of our "Opposition" Party again? I can't seem to remember) ... we're still troubled. Terribly, terribly troubled. It's evident from the state of the "culture" (Low Brow, Middle Brow, Hi!, and Not Sure), that we've reached a sorry state indeed.

      What to do?

Well, you could do worse than follow some our brightest minds across the thin line that separates "us" from The Lunatic Fringe. If this collection of offerings is anything to go by, the trip is short and painless, and it's not nearly as Dark and Fearful over there as you'd think. Sean Condon's "Pop Quiz" for instance sheds considerable light on the great imponderables: Who's That Girl? Why Do Fools Fall In Love? Who Are You? Are You Experienced?, etc., etc. And Tom Ruprecht provides convincing, albeit anecdotal, evidence that "It's Not Actually A Small World" after all. Jim Stollard reveals what you've always suspected: The Supreme Court has nothing to do with the Supremes ... and everything to do with Basketball. Jason Roeder brings "Words of Hope and Wisdom" that'll stick in the craw of insomniacs everywhere. And John Moe provides a representative list of some "Cancelled Regional Morning TV Shows" that'll make your stay out there on the Lunatic Fringe so much more enjoyable ("Wake the Hell Up Knoxville!").

If all of this is too ... well ... Low Brow ... for you, then John Hodgman's "Fire: The Next Sharp Stick" should bring you up to speed on the revolutionary new technolgies that are changing our world; J. M. Tyree's disquisition "On the Implausibility of the Death Star's Trash Compactor," will answer those questions we all have about space excrement (it's a bigger problem than you'd think); and Jeff Alexander's and Tom Bissell's brilliantly insightful Zinn/Chomsky commentary on "The Lord of the Rings" DVD Collection will bring to light hidden depths in ... well ... The Lord of the Rings trilogy!

Though not all of the pieces in this collection will grab your attention, the best have a sort of anarchic brilliance that'll have you howling with laughter. Many of those that don't will catch you unawares when you double dip later. Even the quietly "unfunny" ones have their magic. Give them time.

I'm not an American, but this kind of humor strikes me as quintessentially American. It's intelligent, literate and highly irreverent. No holds are barred, and it takes no prisoners. (What a Crock of Cliches!) Like everything else with Eggers stamp on it, it reminds me of some of the more deranged moments in Zappa or "Catch-22." It bubbles up like a deranged guffaw from an improbable stew of what Ezra Pound'd call "Kitch and Kulcher".

3 out of 5 stars Same old McSweeney's.......2005-07-28

When I purchased this book, I expected humor that was new, that was unpublished, that was quirky. I was a third right. It was quirky, and while I hadn't read some of them, most of them I had read(...) That being said, the stories and the lists are funny, and it's a great bathroom book. just don't expect anything new.

If you are an educator, at any level, or just have an interest in children's film in general, you must read this book. It is a very concise overview of the theory behind most of the important periods of critical theory. As the genre of theory changes, at times slowly, at times with a rapid pace, this book explains what you need to know. Excellent reading material for anyone with an interest in film.

5 out of 5 stars Sell! Sell! Sell!.......2002-10-22

Drama, by definition, is a public act. Writing a playscript and sitting on it not only won't do anyone else any good, it will make you quite upset. At the very least, you will want someone to read your script in a workshop. But come on, what we all really want is to sell for production.

This book doesn't have as many entries as the Writer's Market, since it aims primarily at not-for-profit and educational theatre. Art for art's sake. However, its entries are much more thorough and help you target your submissions for where they're needed and wanted. There are also entries for contests, agencies, grants and fellowships, retreats, state arts agencies, professional guilds, sources of emergency funds, and more. This is a tightly focussed guide for the professional (or would-be professional) dramatist.

As an annual edition, it will eventually be out of date and will need to be discarded in favor of a new edition. And there are a few typographical problems. So the book isn't perfect. However, it has everything you'll need in any practical way to move your scripts. Treat it with respect and it will serve you well.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good reprint..........2007-06-25

I loved this book as a kid so I purchased a copy for my kids.
Everything you need to know to make boomerangs of all types is covered here. The book does show its age some, as do many Dover reprints (you are unlikley to find the wooden sticks used by service stations for checking gas level anymore... use a thick yardstick instead).

5 out of 5 stars A classic book on boomerangs.......2005-11-19

Would you like to make a boomerang? This book will teach you how to do that. And it tells us plenty about all sorts of boomerangs and how to throw them.

You start with a stick. You round the top side to a roughly convex shape while the bottom remains flat. And you bend the ends slightly towards the convex side. If you do it really well, it may already be a boomerang (called a "tumblestick"). You can try it. But it is better to make two of them and attach them to make a "cross-stick" boomerang. These tend to work very well indeed, unless they get caught in a wind. You can even put three of these sticks together, to get a "pinwheel" boomerang. And Mason describes a bunch of variations on all these designs.

Of the variations, the most interesting are the "boomabirds," which look like birds. There is some fascinating material on how to make them.

The book also includes a section on Australian boomerangs. There are two types. One is called the "return" boomerang. When thrown vertically, it makes an arc and returns (unless it hits something). The other is misleadingly called the "non-return" boomerang. When thrown horizontally, it returns. But when thrown vertically, it just keeps going until it lands. Australian boomerangs are weapons, and birds (which generally do not realize that they need to avoid them) are the prime targets.

I enjoyed reading this book, and I recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Very baroque, but a fun read for present-day boomerang throwers.......2005-07-11

I'd like to state that this is definitely not the book you should read if you want to make or throw a contemporary sports boomerang. The instructions Mason offers really scare me: he proposes multi-bladed boomerangs with a diameter of 36 inches with a 5 inch metal screw poking out on the back for easy one handed catching - give me a break! Two-bladed boomerangs only occupy a small bit of the book.

On the other hand, it's a nice historical view on a certain stage in the evolution of sports boomerangs (the book is from 1937 originally), and it contains the only description I know (including the web as known to Google) of one-bladed boomerangs, so-called tumblesticks.

3 out of 5 stars Slightly dated, but good information.......1999-12-01

The book concentrates mostly on crosswing boomerangs and those built along the same lines. These are a lot of fun to make and fly but if you really want to get into the real thing (sport booms, not "hunting") there are better, more informative books available.

      4 out of 5 stars A fun, do-it-yourself sport/hobby for all ages.......1998-09-03

Mason tells how to build and throw an assortment of throwing objects besides the boomerangs, built out of wood or cardboard. As well, he suggests forms of competitions and judging. He puts a big emphasis on safety -- boomerangs and throwing sticks were designed to bring down small game, or even enemy warriors, so they require care in use. This would be a great addition to the after-school or summer fun program of your park, club, or school. It's also fine to do by yourself during the hours the playground is empty.

        44 MILLION WORDS

        10 BILLION YEARS OF HISTORY

        1 OBSESSED MAN

Part memoir and part education (or lack thereof), The Know-It-All chronicles NPR contributor A.J. Jacobs's hilarious, enlightening, and seemingly impossible quest to read the Encyclopaedia Britannica from A to Z.

To fill the ever-widening gaps in his Ivy League education, A.J. Jacobs sets for himself the daunting task of reading all thirty-two volumes of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. His wife, Julie, tells him it's a waste of time, his friends believe he is losing his mind, and his father, a brilliant attorney who had once attempted the same feat and quit somewhere around Borneo, is encouraging but unconvinced.

With self-deprecating wit and a disarming frankness, The Know-It-All recounts the unexpected and comically disruptive effects Operation Encyclopedia has on every part of Jacobs's life -- from his newly minted marriage to his complicated relationship with his father and the rest of his charmingly eccentric New York family to his day job as an editor at Esquire. Jacobs's project tests the outer limits of his stamina and forces him to explore the real meaning of intelligence as he endeavors to join Mensa, win a spot on Jeopardy!, and absorb 33,000 pages of learning. On his journey he stumbles upon some of the strangest, funniest, and most profound facts about every topic under the sun, all while battling fatigue, ridicule, and the paralyzing fear that attends his first real-life responsibility -- the impending birth of his first child.

The Know-It-All is an ingenious, mightily entertaining memoir of one man's intellect, neuroses, and obsessions, and a struggle between the all-consuming quest for factual knowledge and the undeniable gift of hard-won wisdom.

4 out of 5 stars Like having your best friend read the best bits to you.......2007-09-28

Non-fiction, a memoir of the year the author read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica, and the effects on his family and life. Pretty entertaining (after a slow start); in fact, much more entertaining than the unpromising premise would suggest. The author has a wry, self-deprecating, and ultimately winning sense of humor. And the excerpts from the encyclopedia were effective and amusing; they read much like someone who knows my tastes weeding out the dross and passing along only the bits of most interest to me. Worthwhile and recommended.

Thank you AJ for expressing what I have never been able to articulate...the Roman Empire like decline of my very expensive education.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining - mix of personal stories and random factoids.......2007-09-20

I'm enjoying this book so far, and I'm only to "E." It's a fun read, and I've already learned some trivia that I've felt compelled to share with others. More than anything, it's a story of a man coming to the realization, as most honors students do, that he's not the smartest man in the world and what that means in terms of his purpose in life. It certainly gets you thinking. I grew up in a nerdy family with grocery store Funk & Wagnalls encyclopedias for bathroom reading, so I can totally relate to this guy.

5 out of 5 stars Just finished your New Book! The Year of Living Biblically .......2007-09-04

        AJ,

Since I KNOW(lol) you (and your FIL)are going to check the reviews for your new book too.
I wanted to say thank you for a really great book that is informative, fun to read and life moving. I have an advanced copy and have been reading it for the last day and a half.

This book should be in the Competitive religion section not the Humor section. In Fact I am going to put it in both places in my store.

I love your story. You say did the Bible make you a better person? At least to me you seem to have changed a lot from Month one to some time in September.

I will be Hand selling this book as soon as it hits my store in finished form. This is one of the best books of the 13 I have read this year.

        Congrads on the twins.

        Thanks

5 out of 5 stars A Smart and Charming Page-Turner.......2007-08-14

I read The Know-It-All while studying to prepare for being a contestant on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire; I needed something to escape from all of the facts I was inhaling, but I didn't want to feel guilty for not using my time wisely. AJ Jacobs book was a perfect fit -- chock full of interesting information, yet funny and poignant, too. Besides taking the reader with him as he navigates his way through the Encyclopaedia Brittanica, there are side trips to other parts of Jacobs' life, both past and present: he and his wife's efforts to have a child; his sweet and slightly competitive relationship with his father; his pursuit of so-called 'smart' activities via Mensa, a crossword players' tournament, and his own appearance on Millionaire; scenes from his childhood in which he was convinced he was the Smartest Boy in the World.

This book is both touching and a riot, and one of the best books I've read in a long time. I couldn't put it down and I was sorry when it ended. In short, The Know-It-All is terrific!

            Book Description

The first book to speak out against the pervasive influence of the American-Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) on American politics, policy, and institutions resonates today as never before. With careful documentation and specific case histories, former congressman Paul Findley demonstrates how the Israel lobby helps to shape important aspects of U.S. foreign policy and influences congressional, senatorial, and even presidential elections. Described are the undue influence AIPAC exerts in the Senate and the House and the pressure AIPAC brings to bear on university professors and journalists who seem too sympathetic to Arab and Islamic states and too critical of Israel and its policies. Along with many longtime outspoken critics, new voices speaking out include former President Jimmy Carter, U.S. Representative Cynthia McKinney, Senator Robert Byrd, prominent Arab-American Dr. Ziad Asali, Rabbi Michael Lerner, and journalist Charles Reese. In addition, the lack of open debate among politicians with regard to the U.S. policy in the Middle East is lamented, and AIPAC is blamed in part for this censorship. Connections are drawn between America’s unconditional support of Israel and the raging anti-American passions around the world—and ultimately the tragic events of 9/11. This replaces 1556520735.

5 out of 5 stars FINDLEY AMONG FIRST TO SPEAK ABOUT BRINGING AMERICA BACK.......2007-10-03

Findley, a pure PRO-AMERICAN is one of the rare congressman with a backbone who,... puts America first. He was and is the pioneer of bringing attention to Americas getting off course with a spineless and cowardly Legislature - especially today. I feel Findley's courageous and 'making America' aware of the cancer within it book should be read and taken VERY seriously. Outstanding and other A+ scholarly works on this topic are: Jimmy Carter's: Palestine:Peace Not Apartheid; ans most recent is "The Israel Lobby," by Mearshiemer and Walt. These are also excellent objective reads that bring true clarity to what's really going on today.

1 out of 5 stars Nice try. It's the Norwegians we need to be worrying about........2007-09-17

Do not read this book. I have never in my life read so many lies in one book. He is just trying to divert our nation's attention from the lobbies that are doing the most harm: The pro-choice movement, the teachers unions, the environmental lobby, and, most theatening of all - the Norwegians.
These are the nefarious organizations with unlimited financial power and unrivaled political and media influence who use violence and intimidation to force their will upon our nation. Shame on Amazon for giving voice to this author who is obviously bent on the annihilation of God's Chosen Race.

5 out of 5 stars Harder Read But Most Worthy, Start with the Other Book.......2007-09-03

This book is a perfect counter-point to The Power of Israel in the United States. I review that book also, and recommend both books to every American, just as I also recommend the books that document how the Saudis have bought the Bush Family and the Republican and Democratic parties, neither of which represents We the People. Completely apart from the venal immorality of Dick Cheney (see my review of Vice: Dick Cheney and the Hijacking of the American Presidency in which I itemized the 23 high crimes and misdemeanors documented by that book), the fact is that Congress has been bought by multiple parties, and no longer represents We the People.

This book is a harder, longer read, so I recommend you start with the other book. As with the other book, this book is a strongly documented and very lengthy catalog of the sins of the Zionists and the Israeli Government, not at all against the moderate Jews and their legitimate concerns. I have seen Gaza and Beirut, and what Israel has done to the Palestinians, to the former "Paris" of the Middle East, combined with their Assault on the Liberty, is unforgivable.

This book logically catalogs how the Zionists intimidate even such a person as Ted Turner, who was forced to back down when he said both sides were committing terrorism (there is in fact a UN Resolution that finds Israel guilty of genocide and racism, but then that is one of those "fog facts" that our totalitarian monsters choose to ignore.

The author organizes the book around how Zionists silence the small and the weak, while buying out the Oval Office, the Congress, the media, while also subverting academic freedon.

I especially like the author's conclusion, "What Price Israel?" The US taxpayer is subsidizing Israeli genocide and Israeli idiocy, and the US and Israel appear to be the last two countries to continue to believe in the value of force that is both unaffordable and unsustainable in an unconquerable world.

Congressman Tom Moran, who represents my district, has personally said that Zionish have too much influence on Congress, and I agree. Tom Moran has been a very good representative, and he speaks the truth.

Here are some books and a DVD that can put the totally unacceptable Zionist influence on the USA in a larger context:

1 out of 5 stars Findley is Pathologically Obsessed With Israel and its American Supporters.......2007-08-28

If readers want to read a book that evinces a pathological obsession with Israel and its American supporters and blames them for every problem under the sun, then by all means buy this book. But if you don't, avoid this book like the plague. Paul Findley is a former Congressman who now serves as a pro-Arab propagandist and Palestinian apologist. When I read reviews that refer to him as objective, I have to laugh. Findley is as one-sided and biased in his views as they come.

The absurdity of Findley's thesis is easy to prove. People and institutions are constantly "speaking out" to attack Israel and the pro-Israel lobby in the most vicious terms. What punishment do they face for doing this from the Israel lobby? None whatsoever. No one is suppressing their free speech. Jimmy Carter and Professors Walt and Mearsheimer, among others, are free to present their biased and distorted views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the influence of the Israeli lobby without retaliation. Some criticism, yes, but no suppression of free speech.

One might ask why Findley was defeated in his Congressional reelection bid some years ago by a candidate supported by AIPAC? I would submit that it was Findley's greater concern for Yasir Arafat's interests than those of his own constituents that was responsible for his defeat, not any conspiracy on the part of Israel's supporters.

I note that many of the reviewers have repeated the standard and tired line that one can't criticize Israel without being labeled anti-Semitic. One can criticize Israel and the Israeli lobby without being anti-Semitic. Unfortunately, many of the reviews posted here show that some of the people who criticize Israel and the Israeli lobby resort to anti-Semitic stereotypes and cross the line into open anti-Semitism and bigotry, a la the Protocols of the Elders of Zion forgery. If you believe that there's a sinister Jewish conspiracy to control the U.S. government and media for nefarious purposes, you hold anti-Semitic views. For those of you who don't hold those views, stay away from this awful book.

            5 out of 5 stars Eye opening.......2007-07-28

Extremely well written and informative book about the powerful Israel lobby that operates under the radar--often times against the interests of the US.

4 out of 5 stars great recipes, clear instructions.......2005-07-29

First, I want to say that this is the paperback version of The Cooks Illustrated Complete Book of Poultry (different title, different cover design.) This is a great book especially for those who eat a lot of chicken and are looking for a variety of ways to prepare it, like me. There are recipes for dishes from many different traditions, which I like, and all are tasty. If you look at the table of contents, you'll see that they are arranged by cooking method, which is handy. And the book has all the explanations and clear directions typical of Cooks Illustrated books. My absolutely only complaint is that I appreciate it when an entire recipe is printed across two open pages, so I can put it in my cookbook stand and leave it there, and that is not the case here: I have to turn the page. But that's minor. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Truly "complete"-useful to the novice & expert alike!.......2005-03-06

This is the sort of cookbook that grows with you. If you're a novice cook, or you cook only because you have to put something on the table every night, you will find this book enlarges the number of fool-proof chicken dishes you can put on the table without much fuss. Each chapter suggests several variations, so you can adapt to what you have on hand or what's fresh at the store. There are also handy chapters on soup, leftovers and turkey breasts.

If you're a more seasoned or adventurous cook-or you'd like to become one!-you will appreciate the scope of the book, which provides basic recipes in 37 chapters, including what to do with duck, goose, quail, squab, and pheasant. With a proven "method" at hand, you can experiment with seasonings & vegetables and feel confident that your new creation will at least be edible. Or if you prefer to stick to the book, there are more complex dishes here, such as Sautéed Butterflied Chicken with Tomato, Olive and Caper Pan Sauce and Grilled Squab with Red Chile-Pumpkin Seed Sauce.

If you like America's Test Kitchen or Cook's Illustrated, this book is a guaranteed winner. Even if that's not you style, you might find the abundance of recipes makes this a winner anyways. Best of all, it's affordable!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific guide to cooking poultry.......2002-12-11

I bought this book at full price in a bookstore and think it was worth every penny; ..., this is a great buy. Not only does it contain many recipes for cooking all sorts of poultry in all sorts of ways (roasting, braising, stir-frying, etc.), but the editors experimented with variations on the different techniques. (For example, they roasted a chicken in almost every way imaginable -- high temp, low temp, turning it, not turning it, etc -- describe their results, and recommend the ones they think are best after explaining why.) Their recipe for butterflied roasted chicken is superb -- I highly recommend this cookbook.
