Book Description
Torquato Tasso's poetic discourses were the most important source for Poussin's theory of painting. The poet's ideas on artistic imitation, novelty, and plot structure and unity, which are exemplified in his epic La Gerusalemme liberata, proved to be fundamental to the artist's conception of narrative painting, culminating in the Israelites Gathering Manna. Offering new interpretations of his works, this book also investigates Poussin's larger literary culture and how this context illuminates the artist's response to contemporary poetic texts, especially in his mythological paintings.

Nowadays, not only has much Hollywood animation and game design become informed by the Japanese manga aesthetic, but these works are increasingly done by computer applications.Indeed, Photoshop and other 3D software have become detailed and versatile enough to be an ideal tool to successfully render the nuances of the human figure and face. How To Create Virtual Beauties is a must-have volume for those working in such fields, a comprehensive guide to rendering beautiful characters through computer technology that allows not only for exquisite rendering of complex forms, but also allows for saving, editing, re-editing, animation and manipulation of the created artworks.

Remarkably simple.......2005-09-27
I'm a student of fine arts with an interest in digital imaging and decided to buy this book. After using it in just the first week I had learned techniques save 4+ hours on shading problems, texturing cloth (in 2d), when to properly use anti-alias and not, as well as more than 10+ techniqes.
The 3D is really easy, rather time consuming, but worth it in the end. It uses examples from Lightwave, but can easily be converted over 3Ds Max or Maya. It was a rather quick read and I wish they would have had more artists than the 3. The slight complaint I have about the book is it has some parts aimed at fan boys. I'd rather have information on how to recreate images than some eye candy

For the first time his ingenious bag of tricks is revealed and examined in detail. After reading the Scam Bible you will never look at your waiter or bartender quite the same way again.
Customer Reviews:
Just for restaurant employees.......2007-01-09
I had been led to believe that this book also included comments about what happens when customers complain about their food. However, it was all about the little scams the wait staff pull to make extra money, usually at the expense of the restaurant. Not having worked in a restaurant, I didn't understand a lot of the scams.
Great Book!!!.......2006-11-14
This book is revolutionary. Eye opening insight to the world of restaurants and the staff that "run" them. It truly is one of the best books that I have ever read, and hysterical. If you have ever worked in the industry, it is a MUST READ!!!
Shocking but very revealing.......2006-11-10
A must read for every restaurant manager/owner and even for restaurant customers. After reading the various ways that servers can line their pockets above and beyond tips, it makes you a much more aware and less likey to get taken. The lengths they would go to pull a scam and their outright audacity were almost amusing, as long as you're not the one getting ripped off.
FANTASTIC.......2006-07-20
This book provided the information I needed to run an efficient food establishment. It also gave me the secrets on what to look out for in the latest restaurant and bar scams. Great authors. A must read.
Short book could have been shorter.......2006-07-13
It seems that the editor wanted to have as many pages in this booklet, so he could call it a book, that he could muster. Large type, small pages, and liberal use of white space still couldn't get it even to 100 pages. The editor even started counting at the title page, so by the time you get to chapter 1, you're already on page 21. I guess the editor took some of the lessons from the authors, about how to rip-off the customers, to heart. I don't read very fast, and spent less than two hours to completely study this novelette.
The authors try and convey a image of rampant rip-offs by a single waiter being possible, but I just don't believe that the scale of their implications are possible. There are a few good scams that may be possible, such as recycling customer checks, but any decent restaurateur has these beat with a good point of sale system, and security cameras.
The references to how bartenders rip-off the customers and store were extremely weak, and probably thrown into the book"let" in order to claim that area is covered. I seriously doubt that the authors ever worked behind the bar, or even interviewed any bartenders before writing this book. For example, they say the bartender should short pour to rip-off his customers. What good is that going to do the bartender? They don't pay for the liquor, the owner does. If anything, over pour so you get larger tips. Duh! Remember, the owner is paying for it, and a customer appreciates and rewards a bartender pouring heavy.
At $12.95 the book is overpriced. It would be appropriately priced around $3.95, provided you always received free shipping. So, for the Amazon rating, if you took $12.95 and divided it by 5 stars, each star is worth $2.59. ($3.95 value / $12.95 cost) * 5 stars) = 1.53 Amazon stars, and we round up to 2 (plus I'm feeling pretty generous right now).
On the positive side, I like the concept of the book, and would like to read one that is more detailed, accurate, and covers more real life situations.
Book Description
From the silent era and The Black Hand (1906) to The Sopranos, Hollywood has had a love-hate affair with Italian Americans. This book is a celebration of nearly one hundred years of images of Italians in American motion pictures. It covers all the stars as well as directors: Danny Aiello, Frank Capra, Francis Ford Coppola, Robert De Niro, Brian De Palma, Leonardo Di Caprio, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, Dean Martin, Vincente Minnelli, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Martin Scorsese, Frank Sinatra, Marisa Tomei, John Travolta, Rudolph Valentino, and scores of others. Dozens of films are discussed, including, very often, their literary and European-cinematic roots. Hollywood Italians is capped by a definitive examination of Coppola's Godfather films as well as the international-television phenomenon The Sopranos.

Very good but another recent book by Fred Gardaphe -- "From Wiseguys to Wise Men" tackles a lot of this topic and does it better!

For those who want to win -- Great Book!.......2006-06-29
Some people just don't get the point. For whatever strange reason, there are people who think that you should be able to "quit your day job" and go playing slots. In this book, the author makes it plain that slots are machines whose programs provide for a steady house edge. Therefore, mathematically, no slot machine can be played in a manner that would always assure the player of a profit. However, the author also makes it clear that there are "methods", as opposed to "systems", that the knowledgeable, educated, and smart player can use to help win on those slots that offer the best paybacks and winning opportunities. And, he identifies which they are, and shows you how to find them!
There is also a big difference between something called a "system" and a "method". The author here in this book makes it abundantly clear what this difference is, and why it is so. In simple terms, a "system" is usually something that will supposedly 'guarantee' you a steady win, mostly on negative-expectation games. This is NOT what the author is offering in this book. Instead, the author makes it very plain that the "methods" he offers are those that are based on sound understanding of the slots, their programs, and the skills and knowledge necessary to take advantage of the opportunities some -- but not all -- of these slots offer. Alongside this advice, the author also makes it plain that none of his "methods" are somehow 'guarantees', but rather guidelines to help the slot players improve their results, lose less, and win more.
This book is full of great advice, and much wisdom. The author has gone to great lengths to unmask the realities of what slots are, and how they really work. He has also put decades of his personal experiences behind the recommendations and advice he offers. Several times he makes it clear that he is NOT offering "systems", but rather the knowledge that smart players can use to help themselves become better players.
It is the application of this knowledge to the information the author offers about slots that makes this book essential reading for anyone interested in playing better, losing less, and winning more and more often.
Best on this topic so far.......2005-03-27
This book is the most informative and straight forward of all the slot gambling books I have read. There seems to be an assumption that the reader already has the basics down and if you do you will benefit from this book. I thought I knew a lot until I read this book. I would not recommend it for rank
beginners.
Learn Where to Find the Good Slots and How They Really Work.......2003-05-30
No other book tells the real story of what the modern slot machine actually is. All modern slots are computers. Other books talk about the Random Number Generator as the "mechanism" by which the slot machine program "picks" the winning events. No other book, however, tells the reader what the RNG actually is, and how it really works, and why this is important. No other book actually shows the inner workings of the modern slot machine, because no other author has been allowed to publish this information. Royer's book is the ONLY book that tells the truth of the reality of the slot machines, including video slots, and how and why they work the way they do, and how to play them to win. This information is EXCLUSIVE to Royer, and to this book.
Royer also shows the reader which are the best slots, and why, as well as how to find them in the actual casino, and how to exploit them for profits. Because of Royer's "insider" knowledge of not just the slots themselves, but also of the casino's slot mix floorplans and marketing strategies, Royer is able to show the reader precisely what to look for in the casinos to find just precisely where the really good slots are, and why they are there. Royer also explains where the "bad" slots are, and why they are placed there. Royer shows the reader how to tell the good from the bad, and how to make this knowledge pay.

Book Description
If one culprit is suspected above all others for encouraging society to become more violent and unfeeling, it is television violence. This medium, which has become so pervasive in the last 50 years, seems to play an enormous role in the lives of the vast majority of people. But who controls the content which exerts such an enormous influence and to an extent controls the people? What are they doing now and what will they be doing tomorrow? Is violence essential to sell toothpaste and hamburgers? What are our children becoming and what will their children be like? Will every child carry a gun or other weapon just waiting for someone to trigger their violent nature and ignite their preprogrammed anger?
This new and enlarged book gathers the literature in this hot-button field into the following areas: General Studies; TV Industry; Children and TV Violence; Behavioral Links; Public Opinion;Law,Guidelines and Standards; Sex in Television.
Book Description
What one piece of advice has made all the difference in your life?
That was the question longtime journalist and Fox & Friends cohost E.D. Hill asked of scores of the most famous and successful figures in America -- from President George W. Bush to supermodel Carol Alt. The result is Going Places, a collection of moving and instructive profiles that reveal exactly what inspires and drives our nation's best and brightest to survive and thrive.
In the pages of Going Places, you'll discover how Donald Trump approaches the competition, what makes NFL star Tiki Barber a smart player on and off the field, and what life lesson television star Doris Roberts learned on a trip to Napa Valley. You'll follow country music star Trace Adkins's journey from working on a rig in the oil fields of Texas to signing a deal with Capitol Records in Nashville, and Donna de Varona's path to becoming the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic swim team at age thirteen. Sometimes heart wrenching, sometimes humorous, and always captivating, these portraits are sure to inform, entertain, and, most important, inspire.
-Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, on searching for her soul in Tibet -Champion bull rider Justin McBride on what it means to get a good night's sleep -Senate Majority Leader Dr. William Frist on medicine as a currency of peace -Dolly Parton on her father's horse-sense advice -Dean Cain on rejection, perseverance, and lessons he learned from his son
Sharing these stories in these figures' own voices, Going Places reflects a vast and diverse America in which anything is possible. "It is my hope that you'll have this book by your bedside table and turn to it, alone or with your children, to find inspiration from wonderful people." After all, as these real-life stories illustrate, great advice can come from anyone, at any time.
Customer Reviews:
E.D. Hill my kind of writer.......2007-01-11
Excellant book. Great airplane reading. She's thoughtful and funny. How wonderful to have met and interviewed such great people.
an autobiography may be better than Going Places!.......2006-10-10
I enjoyed reading E D's book, Going Places. It's perfect for younger readers, especially for ones trying to establish themselves, as well a relaxing read for older folks. E D Hill is not only attractive and kind; she may be the best news anchor on Fox.
The book is about well-known people talking about their experiences that help them become successful in life.
I read some of the previous comments and will note that proceeds from the book went to charities and not all in her pocket!
A word to E D Hill would be, write an autobiography, it may be better than Going Places!
Inspiring.......2006-05-17
The book is every bit of entheusiam I expected. Very good review of success.
Nice coffee table book.......2006-03-23
This book will probably end up under my coffee table or on my decorative book shelf. It's a good book to have around for a few minutes of upbeat reading, but is by no means a self-help book. It includes pictures and thoughts from many well-known people, and although I personally did not know a lot of them, the ideas were still honest and true.
Uncommon Denominator.......2006-03-19
As my 18 year old daughter was unwrapping her autographed copy of E. D. Hill's book "Going Places" on Christmas morning, I told her I wanted to read it when she finished it. By Spring Break she lent me her book, and I now understand why she enjoyed it so much.
E.D. Hill explores the common denominator of successful people from all walks of life. But what the reader comes away with is the clear message that it is not the common, but the uncommon things that successful people do that has led them to the top of their respective fields.
In a culture that embraces mediocrity and highlights those who stand out for all the wrong reasons, "Going Places" is a wonderfully inspirational breath of fresh air. For anybody with teenagers, E.D. Hill's book reinforces the message that not only is it OK to be different from "the crowd" and follow their life's passion, but it is absolutely essential if they wish to be one of the few with the courage and stamina to Go Places.
Book Description
Much of the innovative programming that powers the Internet, creates operating systems, and produces software is the result of "open source" code, that is, code that is freely distributed--as opposed to being kept secret--by those who write it. Leaving source code open has generated some of the most sophisticated developments in computer technology, including, most notably, Linux and Apache, which pose a significant challenge to Microsoft in the marketplace. As Steven Weber discusses, open source's success in a highly competitive industry has subverted many assumptions about how businesses are run, and how intellectual products are created and protected.
Traditionally, intellectual property law has allowed companies to control knowledge and has guarded the rights of the innovator, at the expense of industry-wide cooperation. In turn, engineers of new software code are richly rewarded; but, as Weber shows, in spite of the conventional wisdom that innovation is driven by the promise of individual and corporate wealth, ensuring the free distribution of code among computer programmers can empower a more effective process for building intellectual products. In the case of Open Source, independent programmers--sometimes hundreds or thousands of them--make unpaid contributions to software that develops organically, through trial and error.
Weber argues that the success of open source is not a freakish exception to economic principles. The open source community is guided by standards, rules, decisionmaking procedures, and sanctioning mechanisms. Weber explains the political and economic dynamics of this mysterious but important market development.
Customer Reviews:
designing exchange conversations in a new historical style.......2006-05-29
Steven's book brings a rich articulation of the social practices innovations unleashed by the Open Source collective: a new understanding of private property that better fit the tech forces and the challenges of the present. His book it is not a model; it is not the list of the 10 reasons why...; it is not the defense of an emerging theory; but an historical account in which anecdotes, facts, historical moment, tentative hypothesis, set the background to allows the reader to reshape her/his own questions. The book gave me a perspective I have been testing with IT architects, programmers, software designers...I feel myself much more prepare to engage in conversations about the future in a meaningful and effective way. Thanks to the author!
all the major players in open source.......2005-11-17
For the serious reader (and who indeed thinks open source is hilarious?), Weber provides a detailed history of how this idea developed. He traces it from the advent of unix in the 1970s, and the generous (ie. low fees) licensing terms by ATT. Which led to the BSD Unix that flourished in the 80s. Also during this time, GNU took off.
But the bulk of the book deals with the 90s onwards. Especially as linux grew from Torvalds' seminal contribution. Its intellectual roots in unix and GNU are studied. We also see the rise of the Free Software Foundation and Apache, as articulate enablers and promoters of open source. All of which was aided by the invention and meteoric growth of the Web. This played a vital role in enabling a global audience of programmers to hear of and contribute their efforts.
A Real Page Turner.......2005-07-14
I'm a commercial software developer, and found the author's history of the UNIX culture and the story of its evolution into what we now call Open Source to be fascinating. That alone made it a good read for me. Add in the thought provoking analysis of the "whys" (the real point of this book), and it's a killer combo.
Warning: the book is *full* of sentences like "Pluralism at many different levels is being enabled by communications technologies and by experimentation with property; together, these are reducing the marginal cost of adding voices toward an asymptote of zero." Despite that, I've been able to read it at the pace of a thriller, not a textbook.
A landmark work on the Open Source movement.......2005-07-11
I am a commercial software developer/manager who has often wondered about the broader motivations and implications of the Open Source movement, which is permeating many large patches of my industry. I found this book incredibly helpful in giving me the background I needed to understand the various Open Source products and articles I encounter day to day. Although my background is technical, this book generally is not. Although some technical information is unavoidable, Weber does a great job of maintaining his position as a professional political scientist and an informed layman on software technology. It may seem strange for a political scientist to approach this subject, but it turns out to be very beneficial because of the skill he has in analyzing organizations, their cultural, governmental, economic and societal impact. This isn't really a political science book; it is deeply about Open Source. But, Weber did manage to get me a little more interested in political science too.
Weber is a terrific writer. This is one of the best-organized, concisely written and cleanly reasoned books I have ever read. That said, this is not light reading; you will need to put your thinking cap on and think big thoughts with the author pretty frequently. This is exactly what I was looking for. There's plenty of shallow analysis out there concerning Open Source. What Weber provides is the cross-discipline perspective of a professional scholar who has studied Open Source carefully. I believe this book will prove useful to future historians when they want to understand the roots of Open Source, which, as Weber presents, could be very profound to our global economy and culture over decades to come.
The first chapter cleanly outlines the goals and big questions of the book. It also provides a primer on some of the main themes and terms such as the nature of property, what "free" means, current progress/status of Open Source etc. This brief chapter helps those who are very new to Open Source and sketches the trajectory of the rest of the book; just what you expect from a professional scholar.
Chapters Two through Four are about 30% of the book and chronicle the historic roots of Open Source (primarily the Unix community) through the past few decades of computing. The history comes right up to the present to show how what started as fits and spurts for decades, has now become the wildly successful realization of an unlikely vision; a phenomena in modern technological accomplishments. These chapters help the reader grasp the true vision of Open Source.
Chapter Five gathers hard data from surveys and empirical data from the online transcripts of Open Source projects to dissect the individual motivations of Open Source developers. There is very little guesswork here. Some of the myths about why the developers do what they do are dismantled and replaced with more intelligent information about their intricate motivations. Although I am not an Open Source developer, I have been a software professional for twenty years and worked with hundreds of other developers. Weber's sketch of the Open Source developer is very believable and resonates with many individual developers I have known.
Chapter Six studies the way the Open Source community, especially developers, organize themselves in various communities such as Linux, Apache and others. There are some good insights here for commercial teams to learn from.
Chapter Seven unfolds many legal implications around property rights, business models and specific case studies such as Red Hat, Debian and many others. This is great information and a unique contribution that is hard to find summarized as it is here.
Chapter Eight explores the long term potential for profound impact Open Source may have globally, politically and economically. There is also interesting analysis concerning how hierarchical organizations interface with networked (web) organizations. Finally, some suggestions for other fields of study that may copy the Open Source model are explored.
I do not think you will find a more helpful analysis for the non-technical aspects of Open Source. If I could give this book seven stars, I would.
A must read book to understand implications of Open Source.......2005-02-09
I bought this book out of curiosity, but it turned out to be an eye opener. The author analyses the topic from social science perspective and did a great job of doing that. He puts the success of open source on an analytical framework and tries to extrapolate its meaning beyond computer programming. I loved reading it and highly reccomend it.
